12-year-old protester: 'Death of capitalism'

LONDON – Thousands of protesters from disparate walks of life danced and chanted in downtown London on Wednesday ahead of the G-20 meeting of world leaders.

Some came dressed as "zombie" bankers, while others donned crazy wigs and platform shoes. Many just wore jeans and t-shirts. A few even wore suits.

Lucien Windridge, 50, a skull painted on his face, attended the protests with his wife, son and daughters.

Dozens got bloodied scuffling with police, and more than a few drank beer out of tall cans.

Smiling through the skull painted on his face, Lucien Windridge said he was protesting because he believed regular people should have more of a voice in the global financial system.

"If people don’t protest, if people don’t have a voice, it means that they are complicit with corruption," the 50-year-old said at the start of one major protest in the heart of London’s ancient financial capital, The City.

"People must be able to express their anger at the system that has let them down," he said, standing next to his wife, son and two daughters.

Windridge was diplomatic, but his daughter Aeyla was less so. What did the 12-year-old want? "The death of capitalism," she said.

One commonality: a desire for change
Windridge was one of around 4,000 people who marched to the Bank of England, the country’s central bank. To judge from the largely handmade signs among the crowd of students, artists, office workers and even former bankers, their messages were as diverse as their appearance:

A demonstrator wearing the Tibetan flag mingles with the crowd.

-     "Stop trading with our futures"

-     "Go vegan"

-     "Free Palestine"

-     "Put people first"

-     "Banker wankers"

-     "Consumers suck"

-     "The ice sheets are melting"

-     "No third runway"

But behind these disparate causes, there did seem to run a common thread – a deep-seeded desire, sometimes vague, sometimes quite specific, for real and tangible change.

For one group, enacting change involved violence. At one point, about 20 demonstrators dressed in black and covering their faces surged through the crowd and crashed headlong into a police cordon. Police dressed in fluorescent yellow jackets slammed some into the asphalt.

One young man who hid most of his face with a black scarf was among those clashing with police.

"Capitalism isn’t in crisis, capitalism is the crisis – money is immoral," he said, declining to give his name.

Through it all, a police helicopter droned overhead as a hypnotic drumbeat set some people to dancing in one corner of the crowd and a brass band did the same in another.

This or the ‘Dukes’
Sebastian Cardelli, 37, who stood in front of the Bank of England’s imposing neoclassical façade, was a world away philosophically from the disguised figures dressed in black.

"I’m out of work. It was either come down here or watch ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’," said the former banker, a Canadian, as he gazed over the crowd.  He doubted that the leaders gathered at the G-20 would come up with anything useful or substantive.

"I don’t believe in a global regulator," he said, an opinion that seemed to set him at odds with most of the many in the crowd.

Some were there for the sheer spectacle of it.

"I think we need to share the resources, power to the people and that," said Tommy Langton, 40, who was innocuous except for the plastic toad he wore on his head. "I’m just a normal English person who likes a demonstration."

He was a bit peeved because police had blocked the way out for all demonstrators, essentially trapping them without water, bathrooms or beer.

The police blockade created "more anger than necessary," said Rachel MacLaughlin, 24, a London-based costume design student.

"People are in here with families, they’ve come along to see what happens, and it is not fair they aren’t letting us out," she said, adding that she had a dentist appointment to get to.

While a small group of people carrying Soviet flags rested on the sidewalk, one man from Ghana was fatalistic about what might come out of the day’s demonstration.

"I hope the world will change for good, but you have to be realistic," said the office worker.  "Recessions have happened before, and it’s always people who are powerless who get hurt again and again and again."

Its time the world wakes up to the limitations of capitalism in providing "better" lives.  People are not going to be willing to work if the fruits of their labors are just going to be taken from them in economic recessions.  My home goes up for auction on April 15th.
Becareful of what you wish for. Replacing capitalism with socialism will make everything like going to DMV. Capitalism includes private ownership of homes...maybe those protesters will take the lead and sign over all their property to the govt for them to wisely redistribute. And I bet that dorky 12 year old would kill before he gave up his playstation or ipod.
For 5,000 years, the greedy have extorted from the poor.  It continues today, aided and abetted by Reagan, Bush, et al, and it will continue for 5,000 more years until this rock we live on rids itself of the hman virus.
I have never been able to figure out why our system pays way to much for special people, Managers, Stars in whatever, Wall street bankers and etc. There are only three sources of real wealth available on planet earth. 1) The minerals and hydrocarbons we take from the earth. The rate at which we exploit these resources at any given period. 2) The rate at which world farmers convert minerals and sunlight into food. 3) The rate at which natural resources are converted into usable goods (manufacturing). Everything else is above and beyond the generation of true prosperity for all people. How do we reward these people engaged in the only true prosperity generators on our small planet??? Why do all the nonproductive people take most of the money???
"The Chickens have come home to roost". Now, citizens of the so-called first class countries would know and understand the problems Africa has been facing throughout the centuries from capitalism and exploitation. Corporate America after sucking Africa of all her blood turned against it's own fat-fed citizens.
How time changes things. Where were all these protesters when the market was strong? Enjoying life, spending, watching their homes and investments grow, getting big raises and bonuses?  Now we are paying a very stiff price for letting our financial system run amok and ignoring regulations. We, as consumers, are to blame. We don't save. We can't have it both ways.
12-year old wants capitalism to be dead?? Well then, let me ask her what she wants instead? You protestants are full of shit trying to "abolish money". If money never existed, we would be going back to the oldest trading method, an example would be: "I would give you 6 fish for your hammer, how's that?" "eh...sure." Stupid people get yourselves educated and stop whining.

I still don't know wtf they're protesting about. "OH IM OUT HERE WITH A siGN AND MY FACE IS PAINTED THO WUT BE MY CAUSE LOL?" That's what it looks like to me. They could just say, "YES INSERT MY PROTEST HERE." Honestly, it seems like pointless violence will ensue... even more than it has. I admit, I'm an ignorant-as-fuck HSer... but this all seems to be pointless. Jesus. The government has too much to handle, let them prioritize.~
Those Brits.  They love a parade!
We should all see this as a big wake-up call.  It isn't capitalism or socialism that led to this.  It was greed.  In today's society people focus highly on their outward expression of who they are.   This leads to very little inward focus of what they truly are.  Moral accountability to god has left the country.  What an individual wants from this world has taken focus.  There is no "bailout" from that.

Thoughts from a recent convert to the Roman Catholic Faith.
you know what give people a lot of money. if you got rid of the monarchy, they have the biggest doll check in the world and are all pretty useless. make buckingham palace or whatever something useful like a place for the homeless. corporates are out of control, but i wouldnt particularly say that communism is any better to capitalism. but at the end of the day, corporates do get paid too much and what for? their profession is too fuck up economies and get rich
When people go to protest governments any where in the world, one thing they should keep in mind--protesters are different from anarchists. During period of economic stability, anarchists might not need governments; however, in economic crisis, they really need governments to intervene in the failed markets or to do something against the corporate greed. Moreover, who has sufficient power and means to deal with economic problems besides governments?
Is it just me, or do the anarchists seem a little disorganized?
After everyone starts working for the government -- just what product are you folks going to sell to the masses to earn your pay?  If you want capitalism dead then you obviously will not mind waiting in line for medical care, clothing, housing and food.  Right  now the only thing keeping anyone afloat is capitalism.  Why do you thing the whole world is looking at the US and praying to whatever god they believe in that our  economy turns around quickly?  Folks who are losing everything spent too much timeand money that they did not have keeping up with the Jones -- now the bill has come due -- good luck!
Death to capitalism?  Are you people nuts? What are the alternatives you are after? Socialism? Communism? Fascism?  So you want the government whom you love so dearly to come in and run your life for you? It's not the idea of capitalism that's flawed.  It's people who are flawed.  And money is ammoral, not immoral...
David,
It looks to me like you gambled and lost. That is not anyone's fault but your own. I admire the strength that it took for you to risk what you had to be a business owner and go for the American Dream but regulation was not what this country was built on.

Quote:

Syndrome- The Incredibles

Many hit on good points and some think this will pass. It will not. Some one made a statement about the have's and the have not's. They are correct. I don't have the statistics but there are numbers out there and I will try and find them and post them.

Globally, there are more millionares (the US created them quicker and in larger numbers than any other G20 country) then at any other time in recorded history.

Money is a finite resource.....unless of course the global treasuries want to print so much of it all currencies won't be worth the paper they're printed on.

Anyone want to think about what will happen as more and more of it passes from many hands to the few???

Global anarchy...the masses will have no choice but to swarm in the thousands or more on the bastions of greed and hubris that have used systems of exploitation to acquire wealth....how else is it 'earned'...think about it!!!

Money never disappears....it just changes hands. So when 95% of the worlds wealth is held by 5% of it's people can we expect them to sustain the global economies? Anyone know what that would mean? Perhaps each of them would need to buy 1,200 homes and 7,250 cars a MONTH!!! Is that going to happen? I don't think so. Unfettered capitalism and free enterprise panders to the worst of human faults....the desire for power, wealth and control.

We are headed to the global tipping point and I'm not hopeful that those in power will just wake-up one morning and say to themselves, 'Today I'm going to do the right thing. I'm going to work within a morally and ethically centered posture of thought and action and not try and rip off everyone I can!!!'

I wish they would, but human nature being what it is, well you know what they will do.....take, take, take for me, me, me!

Will this Earth be better off without us on it? Be careful greed mongers...you may get your wish!!!

Viva la revolution...

This stuff is frightening really.  It's amazing the ignorance out there.  Do you know why so many foreigners love coming here? Because they have choices and a chance.  They are willing to work hard and sacrifice for the freedom they have.  We are a soft and whiny bunch here in America.  Want it all handed to us.  Yes, there is corruption. Yes, mistakes are made every day. You think this doesn't happen in other systems of government?  You just have less freedoms.  And it's not wrong to get out and voice your frustration over these. But geez!  Get educated and help with some real solutions, don't just whine about it.  And do you really want 9 months of your paychecks going to taxes so the government can wipe your nose?  Check how high taxes are in countries with socialist health care.  And yes, healthcare definitely needs reform. But lets look at alternatives other than the efficient government beurocracy to take things over....
Even if people want to end capitalism,it will not work because during the time of Jesus, there were people who were richer than others.Everybody can not be the same that is why our fingers are not of the same length.
I see that the US Congress needs to write laws that dis-allow the "concentration of wealth" as that seems to be what causes depressions. Yes we are in the beginning of a depression and even though we've learned that throwing money at a recession helps; however, this is not a recession...its a depression.
Capitolism is not the problem, infact capitolism is the only way to fix this. Corrupt leaders, and corrupt companies are the problem. If these demonstrators would pull their money out of the banks ect. it would have more effects. Nothing will be fixed if the government takes ever the banks for the public, because that is when they stop being public and become very very private. Companys like GE are more public, when you don't like what their doing, vote with your feet and get your stock out. Margaret Thatcher said "The moment somthing becomes public it stops making money, the goose that laid the goldon egg goes broody, state geese arent great layers"
Capitalism is like Salt - need it to live - get too much and you die.  Capitalism works within a framework of Government Regulation.  Unfortunalely - many of politicians don't believe that.
I am SOOOO happy to see my fellow citizens awake from the illusion of capitalism!!!!

There is no "economic crisis" other than what the banking industry has manufactured.  How in the world could there be a credit/money crisis when banks are the ones who create, make the rules about, and control the supply of money.  Since most of the world operates on fiat currency (paper money not backed by anything other than faith), what's the harm in printing up cash until EVERYONE has enough to consume until they pass out.  The banking industry's intent has been clear from the start -- hypnotize the masses into selling their very souls for these worthless pieces of paper and they will never realize that they can provide for each others' basic needs of food, medical care, shelter, education and clothing to one another freely.
To the 12-year-old girl who wants "The death of capitalism":

It wasn't capitalism that failed you.  The world has never experienced genuine capitalism.  It was the "mixed economy" -- the mixture of capitalism and collectivism -- that failed you.  Collectivism (communism/fascism/socialism/Islamic totalitarianism) are all lethal to humanity.  Study history and learn what Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Roosevelt, Mussolini and Hitler did to the world.  History is repeating itself because people didn't learn it's lessons.  Hitler, for example, killed an innocent girl about your age --Anne Frank -- in the name of National Socialism (Nazism).  It takes laissez-faire capitalism -- the only moral political and economic system --- to protect and nurture innocent life.

Those aren't ethical businessmen or principled protesters who are looting the banks and businesses and people of the world.  They are thugs.  Want to the save the world -- or at least save yourself?  Don't surrender your mind to manipulative politicians who offer to "help" you in exchange for your freedoms. Don't sell your integrity in exchange for their promises.  Just don't do it.

Learn what laissez-faire capitalism really is:  The only moral political & economic system.  A good place to begin is with Ayn Rand's books, especially with "Anthem" and "Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal."  Read her essay "Man's Rights."  Rand knew what she was talking about.  She was born in Russia, witnessed the horrors of the communist revolution, and escaped to freedom in the U.S.  She devoted her life to using reason to advocate individualism and capitalism.  A small but growing number of intellectuals understand the importance of those ideas.  And a good idea is a powerful thing.

Want to REALLY understand what's happening in the world today?  Read her novel "Atlas Shrugged."  Read about the heroine, Dagny Taggert --- and then ask yourself if you still want "The death of capitalism."
The protesters are justified in their action.  Though diverse in causes, there is a common thread.  The common thread is a frustration in leadership that has not responded for so many years to warnings and complaints of citizens of the free world, thus disempowering them and bringing the world to a level of social upheaval not seen since before WW2.  Even in the U.S. there have been lowered expectations of the freedoms expressed in the Constitution.  Ordinary citizens have been betrayed, sold out too many times and now ultimately have had their futures stolen from them.  Likely these protest are just the beginning of a very long road of addressing the very deep issues of governance in the Western World.
Imagine if the 100,000 trouble makers actually put their minds to collectively doing something good.  That would be real change. But no, destruction,  and damage is order of the day.  These are the people who blame others for their own failures, and think society owes them something.
Former Republican:  you're quite right about the numbers...the general rule the police seem to use here is to take the actual number of protesters and divide by 10/20 (or more)!
I was watching the protest live on tv, and there were definitely many more than 4,000 people.
It was a group with a lead singer from England that sang history will teach us nothing. And another that sang "We don’t need no education."

Even the death of capitalism didn't seem to work for the soviet block.

The solution isn't in governments or planets, but working within the design and plan of the creator.  History shows that everything outside of that, no matter what name it has, doesn't work very well.

David of Chicago, don't give up the first time!  Even the folks that started Lockheed Missiles and Space went "bust" the first time around.
Social welfare. Sounds nice, but it comes with crippling taxation and leads to people going elsewhere to try to protect what they've earned, or  to not trying so hard, because the government is going to end up with the fruits of their labors.

There have been many experiments in sharing the wealth, but history shows it never works. Regulation of any community of sharing ends up  in the hands of a few, or just one. Can  you say Chairman Mao? People end up suffering in many ways -- and go back to wanting freedom.

I'm afraid there is no t-shirt emblazoned with the easy and effective answer.
Death to Capitalism? Sounds like these people need a reality check. What is the alternative in their minds, or are those minds so closed due to the fact that they don't have conceivable notion of what they're talking about. Capitalism is the way to go but not in its current state. Overhaul it to make it work better. Instead of giving these corporate greedy CEO's millions upon millions with stock options as bonuses, put a limit on those bonuses for starters. They could put the extra money to good use by investing it into better health care provisions for the employees that actually got those companies where they were for one. What about doing the same for the entertainment and sports industries? Why do celebrities and athletes feel they need to be paid the mega millions that they get? These are just a couple of ideas I have and grant it, it would need a scrutinized look-over to eliminate the loop holes, but how it's working right now is completely unfair to the common person.
Death to capitalism?  What a bunch of dweebs.  I suppose these airheads would rather have the collective farm failures of Communist Russia.
To all,
I've been broke and lost my company when we weren't in a recession(David- maybe you should look in the mirror first and see you didn't plan very well).  Hey Mario, get a job instead of wanting everyone with your philosophy to be broke with no one to blame.  Hey Veronica, got any ideas for those who refuse to work but want medicade, medicare, welfare,-- sorry they were born Americans and are Entitled to it aren't they, MY BAD.  Hey 1friend, I'm not afraid to say I believe GOD is real and where we need to look--What are you talking about?  Uh DeeDee, FYI  Cows produce more carbon dioxide than cars and have for years, What Rice milk and Salad for all of us for the rest of our lives? Hey Ray, the reason they didn't work was because they were led by idiots and followed by idiots, albeit blind led by the blind.  For the rest, it's not a perfect world nor will it ever be.  The fact is, no one knows the future so livethat way, enjoy what you have and treat friends, strangers and enemies alike--JUst like you want to be treated and in no way short change who you are and if you haven't got there, who you need to be!
G20, NWO agenda at an international Level. The banking elitist are taking complete control. There were much more the 4k protestors, exponentially more, though MSNBC would not state the exact figure since it is a company owned by elitist. It is these same globalist bankers who began this economic destruction in order to establish a One World Bank, and One World Monatory system, controlled by the Oligarchy composed of these Elitist bastards. These bastards(Bilderberg Group) must be stop at all cause!
what kind of buisness did you own david stowell?
I can promise you one thing. Even if America and all of the European states fall into depression, there are three countries that won't: China, Russia, and India. These three countries are going to emerge as the worlds new (economical) superpowers. Since we've outsourced every job in America in favor of Wung Fu who works for $0.13 an hour, we've (corporate America) are destroying our own foundation.

There is a big difference between Capitalism and Consumerism. It's time that people learn that difference. When you go to the Big store and buy something, you aren't engaging in free trade. Only forced trade.
whats so painfully ironic, is the poor RIGHT now won't even see it coming, well, maybe thats better as they will be the least able to cope with the change when it happens. EDUCATION is the key, we need to go back to farming, these huge corporate farms are going to fold, then WHAT?? What happens when those twinkies stop showing up at the 7-11? Death, thats what happens, and lots of it, but if we look back to WWII and how everyone got backyard farms/gardens? It was taught in schools, even in the streets, signs were everywhere, grow this, plant this.

the climate will fix itself, once we cull ourselves back through stupidity and greed....

homelessness wont matter, as lots of houses will open up with the deaths.

Freeing Pakistan, Ireland, Tibet, or anywhere wont matter either, as states will reform/collapse/explode/die quietly.

we do need a world government, but maybe they can live on the moon, and their life support was hooked up to switches in all the capitals of the world, and if they didnt keep EVERYONE happy, each switch turned off would cut a % of their life support? heheh, I know Im going out there, but my rant has finally reached an end....
ik totally agree with veronica, you said it right honey, nothing else...
i snicker at all the ignorant comments on this subject.. its all about a one world government... you americans will be spending your amero's in a few years.. when they are done breaking you.. and turning you into a third world slave race! you were sold out in 1913... deal with it!.... revolution! hang them all for treason... take your country back now... save the united states!
"Death to Capitalism!" is she serious? What happens when no one is working and producing goods and services (CAPITALISM) because everyone is waiting in line for their government rations (SOCIALISM) because of their sense of entitlement (Government programs like the welfare system and Medicaid programs grant upon individuals.) Not everyone in line will receive their rations because they (government) ran out. Look at Venezuela, Darfur or any number of Socialist - Communist countries and they are starving. Fields lay fallow because their Government prohibits their use. For example, in 1932–33 the government of the Soviet Union intentionally starved five million Ukrainian peasants to death. During the "Great Leap Forward" the Chinese government caused the death by starvation of twenty-seven million, the largest starvation in human history. See Rummel, R.J. Death by Government (Transaction Publishers: New Brunswick, 1994) , pp. 80, 97. The Haves feast while the Have-nots go famished. I am a have not, but I am not starving and that is because of good old American Capitalism.
Do you people have any idea of the reality of things.  We are spoiled, spoiled beyond belief.  The governments aren't the problem, it's us.  When I was a kid in the sixties and seventies we had one TV set in the house.  We lived in a 900 SF house with a car port.  We mended our soxs, put patches on our clothes and only got two sets of clothes a year.  Once at Christmas and once at the start of the school year.  We didn't have cell phones, multiple cars, internet connections, etc.  John Kennedy started a war that killed 50,000 americans and who knows how many civilians.  He also got us closer to Nuclear war than the world has ever seen.  I used to have to hide under desks once a week in school in NW drills.  Water fountains still had Whites only signs and our gay brothers and sisters could never admit to their true selves.  Things are getting better.  If you want change let it start with yourself.
I have an idea!  The Democrats in the United States have wanted the US to go socalist... obama has done nothing but pointed the country in that direction since he lied his way in... let's just do it.  Screw making out country better, just give up.  Seems that's all  you people can do is give up and hope your Democrat gov't will take care of you.  The reason we're in this pickle is because 1. You poor people took out loans for $250 on a house when you only make under $40k (gross) a year... like you'd really be able to pay those morgages.  2. We had a hand full of rich people lieing to EVERYONE about what they were doing, and Banks that were willing to look the other way. 3. Had the Democratic Party doing EVERYTHING in their power to hinder Pres. Bush in fixing the United States.  Yeah, I'm saying it's YOUR fault.  Not Pres. Bush, not the Republicans like you'd like to blame.  Had the Democrates kissed Pres. Bush's tush like they're doing obama we wouldn't be in this postion.  I mean, you can't tell where obama's back side starts and the Lib Left's lips start!  It's ALL your fault you liberal, tree hugging, socalist, anti-American, scum.  Stop trying to force the blame on the Republican party.
Capitalism, as flawed as it is, is a vastly better option than communism.  Should every person be allowed to have a very basic standard of living, even if they're unemployed?  Absolutely.  It's how people can survive a recession.  However, the idea that someone with a great work ethic should make no more than some lazy scumbag mooching off the system is utterly asinine. It takes away the incentive for people to do a good job.  Not to mention how much of a human rights debacle every commie regime has been.

There is a salary threshold beyond which the rich should be heavily taxed, one at which an increase in salary does not improve quality of life.  This would be a good way to incentivize away corporate greed.  But to deny people the ability to become rich in the first place is stupidity at its finest and a dangerous proposition.
What a bunch of dope smoking, prozac poppin, communist whiners.  Take a shower for once.
Stupid! Stupid! Death to capitalism? these morons don't know what the are talking about! If it wasn't for a damn free market, you guys would be protesting for capitalism again. Money is evil? it is, but it is an inevitable conclusion to human nature and trading! You can never take that away! Never! Think before you speak, if u got somthing to protest morons
One of the problems with regulating markets is that it becomes more and more difficult to decide where to draw the line. Do we want full blown socialism? I admit, many of us around the country are supporting socialized programs such as public power, etc. but where do we stop? Do we really want a central power to control all goods and services? Really the question is do we want to end up like the former Soviet Union, Cuba or communist China? They have their high and mighty times, but eventually they all come tumbling down.
When greed is addressed to for all the problems of the world and when money is the great motivator instead of humanitarian causes... only then will human conscious be truly freed. Too many few are controlling too many plenty. This is a great and wonderful planet we all exist on... if only we can see beyond our own noses.
"Consumers suck"?  "Death to capitalism"?  "Haves v. have-nots"?

My God.  Capitalism has been around since one man traded a chicken for a bushel of wheat from another man.  Capitalism is as natural to human behavior as eating or procreating.  If the government controls industry and trade, then capitalism will manifest itself in a black market.  Capitalism is liberty.  It is socialism which is unnatural, and thus must be enacted through government coercion.  Socialism is fascism and they both demand slavery to the state.

PS:  In a FREE society, there is no place for class-warfare rhetoric as those with less can have more by simply working harder and/or smarter.  In a FREE society, nobody puts a gun to anybody's head and demands that they live in poverty.   In a FREE society, socialism cannot exist because slavery is inimical to liberty.
Oh, and Former "Republican"?  You're a liar.  No actual Republican would spout the kind of jibberish which you wrote.  Even a dumb-dumb like Arlen Specter could not conceive that kind of tripe.
The POWER for *Change* lies w/in *us*! (The WORLD yearns for it--can't you *feel* it?)
America elected its 1st "Black" Prez, a *candidate* who *may* bring about "*real* 'Change'" -- but *we* must PUSH him to do so! It will only happen if "We, the People" stand behind him!
In 1932, after his election, FDR met w/ labor leaders, many, actve Socialists w/ whom he had worked, for over a decade.
They arrived w/ plans they wanted FDR to implement.
Roosevelt told them: "I agree w/ you, I *want* to do it, now MAKE me do it..."
"Progressives" must put differences aside and unite/*organize* against the (expected) counter-attacks of those who support the "status quo."
Prez Obama knows this--it's what "Grassroots Organizing" is about--Change comes not from the TOP down, but from the BOTTOM, *up*!
"Don't *agonize* -- *ORGANIZE*!"
