12-year-old protester: 'Death of capitalism'

LONDON – Thousands of protesters from disparate walks of life danced and chanted in downtown London on Wednesday ahead of the G-20 meeting of world leaders.

Some came dressed as "zombie" bankers, while others donned crazy wigs and platform shoes. Many just wore jeans and t-shirts. A few even wore suits.

Lucien Windridge, 50, a skull painted on his face, attended the protests with his wife, son and daughters.

Dozens got bloodied scuffling with police, and more than a few drank beer out of tall cans.

Smiling through the skull painted on his face, Lucien Windridge said he was protesting because he believed regular people should have more of a voice in the global financial system.

"If people don’t protest, if people don’t have a voice, it means that they are complicit with corruption," the 50-year-old said at the start of one major protest in the heart of London’s ancient financial capital, The City.

"People must be able to express their anger at the system that has let them down," he said, standing next to his wife, son and two daughters.

Windridge was diplomatic, but his daughter Aeyla was less so. What did the 12-year-old want? "The death of capitalism," she said.

One commonality: a desire for change
Windridge was one of around 4,000 people who marched to the Bank of England, the country’s central bank. To judge from the largely handmade signs among the crowd of students, artists, office workers and even former bankers, their messages were as diverse as their appearance:

A demonstrator wearing the Tibetan flag mingles with the crowd.

-     "Stop trading with our futures"

-     "Go vegan"

-     "Free Palestine"

-     "Put people first"

-     "Banker wankers"

-     "Consumers suck"

-     "The ice sheets are melting"

-     "No third runway"

But behind these disparate causes, there did seem to run a common thread – a deep-seeded desire, sometimes vague, sometimes quite specific, for real and tangible change.

For one group, enacting change involved violence. At one point, about 20 demonstrators dressed in black and covering their faces surged through the crowd and crashed headlong into a police cordon. Police dressed in fluorescent yellow jackets slammed some into the asphalt.

One young man who hid most of his face with a black scarf was among those clashing with police.

"Capitalism isn’t in crisis, capitalism is the crisis – money is immoral," he said, declining to give his name.

Through it all, a police helicopter droned overhead as a hypnotic drumbeat set some people to dancing in one corner of the crowd and a brass band did the same in another.

This or the ‘Dukes’
Sebastian Cardelli, 37, who stood in front of the Bank of England’s imposing neoclassical façade, was a world away philosophically from the disguised figures dressed in black.

"I’m out of work. It was either come down here or watch ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’," said the former banker, a Canadian, as he gazed over the crowd.  He doubted that the leaders gathered at the G-20 would come up with anything useful or substantive.

"I don’t believe in a global regulator," he said, an opinion that seemed to set him at odds with most of the many in the crowd.

Some were there for the sheer spectacle of it.

"I think we need to share the resources, power to the people and that," said Tommy Langton, 40, who was innocuous except for the plastic toad he wore on his head. "I’m just a normal English person who likes a demonstration."

He was a bit peeved because police had blocked the way out for all demonstrators, essentially trapping them without water, bathrooms or beer.

The police blockade created "more anger than necessary," said Rachel MacLaughlin, 24, a London-based costume design student.

"People are in here with families, they’ve come along to see what happens, and it is not fair they aren’t letting us out," she said, adding that she had a dentist appointment to get to.

While a small group of people carrying Soviet flags rested on the sidewalk, one man from Ghana was fatalistic about what might come out of the day’s demonstration.

"I hope the world will change for good, but you have to be realistic," said the office worker.  "Recessions have happened before, and it’s always people who are powerless who get hurt again and again and again."

-     "Consumers suck"

I agree with that. It is consuming our natural resources and destroying our planet. It is time that we learn how to do with less "stuff"
Demonstrations of this type are probably not going to accomplish very much.  The main reason is that there are too many demonstrators out there (in this case London)who are representing all too many causes - everything from Free Tibet, To Go Vegetarian.  Disparate protestors like this have no real political or other clout.

I remember the anti-Vietman War demonstrations in the 1960s.  People think they really ended the Vietnam War but it ended when Kissinger and Nixon wanted it to. The only real concession the anti-military hippies got out of it was an end to the draft.  But then none of them ever served and they burned their draft cards anyway.

In any event, demonstrations these days are weak compared to mass movement demonstrations such as the "riots" of 1848 in Europe, and the Paris communes of 1870.  Even these armed movements never won because monarchies went on for almost another 100 years, and in Russia the masses exchanged horse tramplings by Cossacks for machine gunnings by the state security people.
Welcome to the New World Order.  There were probably 100,000s of protesters in London protesting today, but to accurately report would be validating the movement... You cannot silence dissent.  We are seeing the largest transfer of wealth in history!  People are going hungry, homelessness is growing, corporate greed is out of control and the environment has passed the tipping point.  There will no more middle class just the haves vs. the have nots.  If history is any indication, this will not end well.
The reason people are hurt again and again and again is because "it does not belong to man who is walking even to direct his step". Now's the time to really analyze the purpose of government, economy, and life, and to find out what it will take to realize that purpose and stop the hurt. Apparently it will take more than this world has to offer; a government not of imperfect men.
People need meaningful work around the globe. Green jobs and saving the environment can help solve one piece of this big puzzle, so I'm all for the green jobs. However, those protesting need to be asked what they would do to solve the employment problems in their countries. Get groups together and focus on solutions!
Change will come when people are correctly educated. We can't come together and fight for a cause if people don't really know what the cause is. Misinformation IS the weapon of mass destruction. Capitalism is already dead, just those who benefited from it won't let it go and unfortunately those who benefited are our world leaders.
Was the guy with the toad/frog on his head from France?
I work for the end of capitalism-imperialism and I like living in the USA so that I can convert those of you ( always anticipating) who would wish me gone. Another crises another lesson, time to wake up. Even social welfare as in Sweden would be nice. Thank you.
"If people don’t protest, if people don’t have a voice, it means that they are complicit with corruption,"

The man speaks the truth.
Death to capitalism? Where are all these protestors getting their food & shelter? Or better yet where do they expect to get it from after they decide to close the marketplace?? Maybe they just love a day off from their deadend jobs, so even a protest beats work. consuming sucks?? they will stop being consumers when they are no longer among the living, which one of these folks are completely self sufficient?? even going green costs big bucks or euros. anyone seen al gore in the crowd?
In 2008 I had a thriving business. In 2009 I am bankrupt and unemployed.  This is the direct result of
unregulated speculation in the commodities markets, where I as a citizen/taxpayer had no chance of competing.  Regulate the markets so this doesn't happen to any more of us! I am furious and broke,
and see no future, no future, no future for me.
Death to capitalism?  The mess we are in has nothing to do with capitalism as an economic system, it is a result of immoral and greedy people mis-using capitalism and ignoring traditional safeguards.

Capitalism guarantees the most OPPORTUNITIES for the greatest number of people, not RESULTS.  This concept promotes the inner creativity, productivity, etc in each individual.  Socialism attempts to promise equal RESULTS, the only way to do this is LOWER the expectiations for everyone, and the human values mentioned above are suppressed.
Wow, for such a potentially controversial article, there are sure a lot of thoughtful, generous comments on here. I know this isn't really a comment in itself, but I'm just impressed. I've had some bad experiences lately. Good job, folks.
Liberals are the most fickle of all creatures. Instead of going to work and making a living, they dress like freaks and pretty much ask for that living to be handed to them.  If they are homeless/ poor it appears that it is their fault. They further complained about the police locking them in without food, bathrooms or water and claim it's unfair because there were families present. Well if liberals could think they would have thought not to take their children! For that matter it is sad when a 12 year old says they want the death of capitalism. Yea, why don't you regurgitate some more of mommy's and daddy's ramblings.
Get Real!!!

Without consumers no one will produce anything, including food, etc.  Just think for a change.  If no one "consumes" (think consumer) food, we all die.  No one grows food, no one eats.  It takes resources to produce even that "consumer commodity".

Grow up and face reality.  While I'm against waste, I also realize that the utopian world as taught to students over the past 50 years is a bunch of good old-fashioned BS.  Get a grip on reality and work for reality that is responsible.

As to the other comment about "getting rid of capitalism":  That leaves socialism and communism.  There are plenty of examples of what you would expect under that kind of dictatorship and socialistic rule.  Perhaps you need to live that life for a few years before you endorse it.

You need to think for yourselves rather than let others think for you (i.e. socialism).  GOOD LUCK!
Of course free market forms of capitalism has been dead for a while.  We have lived under a private form of socialism for years and it has resulted in a mess. Free and healthy markets are essential for sustainable economies because it assures the best possible information flow through the financial systems. But with the massive private institutions we have now that control whole segments  of our global markets, poor decisions are propagated throughout the world economies.  The wisdom of crowds can never be realized with the present form of economics.
It's funny how once you dilute a message that no one cares.I don't like the IMF or the EU.But once you start throwing the new left anti-semetism and the earth worship of the tree huggers I no longer have any interest in any other message.I hope the Bobbies beat some sense into any losers who resort to violence.
Sorry I was at work making money and paying taxes during all of this...

Changes in world dynamics give us an opportunity to balance the freedoms of diffrent countries.  The economic fears of the established 1st world countries has created a paranoia.  Fear of loss.  With the fear as a motivator it became easy for large and small companies to become more and more selfish.  Holding onto more and more became an understandable reaction to their fear.  Corruption,  theft, dishonesty became even fashionable.  Hopefully we can see there is a need for some stability,  not just to protect the economy but to create a feeling of peace inwhich people can return to their natural state when there is no great fear.  The new system however....is for all and no longer is only for the rich.
When a 12 year old knows enough about capitalism and the global economy to become a headline, then we need to review our educational systems and think TWICE or more about the impact and intelligence of the MEDIA!
I agree with top comment re protests like this one won't do much.
If these people lived in places like afghanstan, iraq and so forth, they would have nothing better to do and would become suicide terrorist bombers.

The cops should move in and flog the lot of them.
I am 30 and have grown up on the streets my whole life. I have seen what others care about, money for a living. I dont understand what happened I had finaly became a Superintendent 40k a year and lost it. We are damed in this age and war could be a viable option? NO, we could never beat our governments (THE RICH). Like one post said education education education. Next question how to pay for it? I gess we are all gonna be screwed there are to many issues and challenges for our young at this point.
This is a world gone mad.  The government can not solve our problems.  Capitalism is not the problem, never has been.  It is the government taxing everything including death to help those that refuse to help themselves.
It seems obvious that political leaders are becoming more and more afraid of the People. Otherwise, they would not need such heavy police or military presence whenever they hold national and international meetings. A safer and more worthwhile approch would be to involve the protesters in political processes.
When the brilliant communists killed the capitalist pigs in Russia 20 million starved.
"But behind these disparate causes, there did seem to run a common thread – a deep-seeded desire, sometimes vague, sometimes quite specific, for real and tangible change."

Wow, that's  a stretch. What is this, a Rorschach?

"Death to capitalism? Where are all these protestors getting their food & shelter?"

Not to mention clothing. I'm sure more than a few of them were wearing Nikes. And you know none of them left the house without loading up the iPod.

GIVE ME A BREAK! AFTER HAVING SERVED IN FOUR WAR SETTINGS FOR THE U.S. AND HAVING BEEN PRESIDENT OF FOUR DIFFERENT COMPANIES IN W.N.Y. THE ANS. FOR MOST OF THE WANKERS IN G B IS GET OFF YOUR DEAD A$$ AND WORK. FOR SOMEONE ELSE OR YOUR SELF. WHAT % OF TODAYS MOB WORK OR LIVE OFF THE GOVERNMENT?? DONT WORRY ABOUT THE U.S. HAVE A NICE DAY. DARWIN WAS RIGHT.
Oh David, there is always a future...for you and for everyone.  It may not be the one you thought you should have or planned on but the sun will come up again tomorrow (Well, in Chicago that may not be completely true...I spent a long winter in Evanston in the 60's).

My dad died at 40, I was 11.  We lived in a company house and had to move out.  Started working off the books that year and made it through college without a scholarship and without a loan.  Have not been without a job and for 18 years two jobs until I retired at 65 last January.  Don't give up.  Suck it up and get out there.  You will find something and you will survive.
This is all so familiar.  People against capitalism untill it's their turn to get rich.  98% would sell out in a New York minute.
Bunch of idiots.  "Death to capitalism" sounds more more life to communism.  These dopes better be careful what they wish for!
Nothing will change there will still be the have and the have nots. 99% of the people are the have nots no matter what we say ,how many letters we send to our leaders, or how much we protest the goverments will help the banks and big business. yet alot people have lost thier jobs and the ones who are working  are just barley surviving. We pay higher and higher taxes, and the small businessman is forced to cut back or fold. A vast amount of people are living hoping we dont have some emergency arise let alone have the ablity to get ahead since our intrest rates get raised through the roof which makes paying anything down impossible. Let alone have the ability and go out and purchase a car or a home.
RIGHT ON! Mark Fanwood. At least one other person sees clearly.
SPEAK UP !! the squeaky door is always heard..these people are the roots for CHANGE..if wasn't for them, we would all be prodded like cattle..BIG CHANGE will happen, when people UNITE..
I believe this slowdown is good for everybody when thinking long-term. Here is how.. Many of the housing speculators got burned. It is what they deserved. Housing has come down and is more affordable. We need that. It is harder to get risky loans. Maybe people will finally learn that debt is NOT a good thing. This recession, in my opinion, was long overdue.
Modern society is enduring the strain of one of its most dangerous phases of far-flung interassociation and highly complicated interdependence. (The Urantia Book, p. 765.2)

Present-day profit-motivated economics is doomed unless profit motives can be augmented by service motives. Ruthless competition based on narrow-minded self-interest is ultimately destructive of even those things which it seeks to maintain. (The Urantia Book, p. 805.5)

What is wrong with you people?  The environment is not in need of being saved - it's pretty arrogant to think that you can either destroy or save the world. Capitalism is the only system that works because it appeals to man's basic instinct of wanting more.  Socialism has not now, ever had, or ever will work.  Doesn't anyone remember the bread lines of the old USSR?  The problem with our economy is that we have been edging closer and closer to Socialism since the early 90's.  Why would you ever want government to take care of every aspect of your life - do you like waiting in line at the DMV all day?  Do you think the medical care you receive when you're on welfare or unemployment is as ever as good as the care provided from the insurance carrier of where you work(ed)?  Life has never been fair - if it was, we'd all be dead for all the stupid things we've done in life.  We all start from the same place and the place you're presently at in life is entirely your own responsibility based on the choices you've made.  You could have decided to go to college, you could have decided to save every dime you've made, you could have maximized your talents or intelligence in athletics, inventing something, acting or something that someone else felt was worth paying a lot of money for.  I am a 35 year old, high school educated, child support paying scared man afraid that he's going to lose his job too.  However, it's no one's fault, but mine because I should have made better choices.
Life is the product of constant change. Protests, violent or not, or even wars are the by product of surival.. a physio-animal instinct ingrained in every DNA. At this point in time, the humankind is yet in the GREED scale of existence. It is SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST.
Capitalism and Democracy has worked very well for the last 200 plus years. It has provided more food, technology, money, and health advances than any other type of economy or government. The problem is not monetary or political, it is moral and cultural. Yes,people spend too much and consume too much, but those are individual choices. The more we as people become secular and hedonistic in our values and conduct the worse things have become. The European model is a joke,,,and we ALL saw how that Soviet thing worked out! Quit whining, start working, and stop looking for somebody or something to blame. In America anyone can attain anything if they work hard enough----Look at Obama, and tell us the U.S. is a bad example of FREEDOM!
What's gone around is now coming around. About the time people start showing up in the British parliament or the US congress with pitchforks and a rope, maybe our so called " leaders" that we've had for the last 50 or so years will begin to understand, but I don't hold out any hope before this scenario unfolds.
It may not be dead, but gravely wounded. And that wound was self-inflicted.
americans (STAND UP ) what is the matter with u people , we are losing our freedoms, dont u give a crap , ??? it is time to protest . to take the big crooks down in goverment and wall street and banks, put a few in prison , instead of rewarding them  , TAND up or LIVE WITH IT ,IF U CAN  ty gim
Everyones a consumer stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad to see I'm not alone.
David Stowell, hang on, fella'. Things change. What you did once, you can do again--only next time maybe the field will be a little more level. Thinking of and caring for you and others in the same shape. Remember 'Hope is that thing with feathers...' --Emily Dickenson
Mario Rios--you aren't the only one. Me, too!
After all is said and done and all the protests are over. Everyone will go home to there warm beds or watch a little news on the plasma screen have a cold beer propably eat a nice warm meal.  Tomorrow they will find a new protest somewhere but... What were they against???  Oh yeah, Capitalism.  F.@&#king Idiots.
Life is the product of constant change. Protests, violent or not, or even wars are the by product of surival.. a physio-animal instinct ingrained in every DNA. At this point in time, the humankind is yet in the GREED scale of existence. It is SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST.
The military-industrial complex has turned out to be an efficient way of polluting and wasting resources. It's also turned out to be an efficient model to control people. The value of life has been hidden in favor of the value of money. The human potential has been "hijacked", on a collective level, and focused into a course of destruction. A different psychology is indeed necessary, for the health of our future. It's just a matter of time before this is realized...
