Palestinian discord over Holocaust concert

TEL AVIV – Wafaa Younis is a woman whose heart is in the right place; she is an Israeli Arab who has made a real effort to help Palestinian children in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank.

She started with the boys; she wanted them to put down their stones and learn the violin, in the hope that they would not grow up and pick up a gun. I first met her three years ago when she finally persuaded the Israelis to allow the Palestinian children to leave the West Bank and go to her home in the Israeli town of Ara for violin lessons.

She even took them on trips to the coast; even though they grew up 30 miles from the Mediterranean, they had never seen the sea. Her first attempts to teach a few boys the violin grew into a small orchestra of boys and girls. She even rented an apartment in Jenin so that she could teach them there, because it was easier for her to cross into the West Bank than it was for them to leave.

Then Younis had an idea; as part of Israel’s annual Good Deeds Week, she would arrange a little concert in Holon, near Tel Aviv. Her young musicians from the "Strings of Freedom" orchestra would entertain Holocaust survivors. They would play their favorite classics, and also some songs of peace; a way to bridge the divide between Palestinians and Israelis.

Too volatile an issue
At the concert last Wednesday, the group of 13 young musicians from Jenin played for about 30 Holocaust survivors and they even dedicated one song to Gilad Shalit, the Israeli soldier who has been held prisoner by Hamas in Gaza for three years.

Younis is not the first person to make such an effort – there are literally hundreds of peace groups that have the same aim – bringing together Arabs and Jews with similar interests and hopes.

Holocaust survivors listen as Palestinian children from the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank play music in Holon, Israel on March 25.

But playing for the Holocaust survivors turned out to be bridge too far. Adnan Hindi, a Palestinian political leader in Jenin, was outraged by the concert. He called the Holocaust a political issue and said that the Palestinian children had been tricked.

He complained that Younis had not told the children they would be playing before such a politically sensitive audience. She answered that she tried to explain to them, but that they made too much noise on the bus and didn't hear her. Other Palestinians said that was a bit late to tell them.

Younis said she didn't realize anybody could possibly object to playing a concert for those "poor old people" – and anyway, most of the Palestinian children had never heard of the Holocaust.

The Holocaust is a particularly sensitive subject for Palestinians. There is widespread ignorance of the details of the atrocities committed by the Nazis against Jews during World War II and there is a sense among many Palestinians that why should they care about Jewish suffering more than 60 years ago when Israelis don’t seem to care about the suffering they are causing Palestinians today.

No good deed goes unpunished
Younis is an Israeli Arab who tried to do a bit of good. For her pains, her apartment in Jenin has been boarded up and she is not allowed into the town anymore. Her orchestra has been disbanded. She said the Palestinian officials just want to take the money that she had raised for the children's orchestra.

I know Younis. After I met her several years ago she called me for months, asking for donations, for a contribution for a new violin, or even an old one, just so that she could teach music to her Palestinian students.

She wanted to introduce a bit of light into their lives and direct them toward the violin bow, and away from the gun. She had many ideas to help people, and she possessed in abundance that peculiar combination of strength and naiveté that mark people who, against great odds, achieve great things.

Today she didn't answer her phone.

We may live in a small world, but there are people with even smaller minds.  She should keep going; don't let those people with small minds stop you.
Many times in the past Muslims (Arabs) and Jews have lived in peace side by side. This isn't Muslim vs. Jew. It's European Jew vs. Arab. That's what it's about.
It's always the women who set things right. Start listening to them. Honor your mothers. Set down the guns and pick up the violins. Have a feast together. Get everyone some water and electricity and food and a job, and everything will be right.
And they say it is the Israeli's oppressing them. Seems they are doing a pretty good job on their own.
She tried to tell the children while they were on the "bus"???  On the way to concert?  The children were tricked and shame on Wafaa Younis for her actions.  She should have been clear from the beginning what her intentions were.
It is such a pity that the "Who cares?" attitude blankets the world so heavily these days. Who cares... if genocide was government sponsored then (and now)...if a group of people was singled out for torture. death, etc. because of race or creed then (and now)...if the world only cared about the bottom line and not human decency then (or now)...nobody cared about anyone but themselves then (or now)? I guess we as a species never learn that the sum of our parts is greater than the individual ones.
she certainly has my respect.  of course only the ignorant would believe that she had a political agenda.  if only we could get everyone to think the way she does, the world wouldnt be in this mess.
While the Palestinians and the Arab world in general are quick to define Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank with terms taken directly from WW II their people are ignorant of what a real Holocaust is. If the Palestinians think that 13 youths playing music for a small group of Holocaust survivors is a political act, I wonder if there is anything a Palestinian can do with an Israeli that they would not consider a political act? We need a lot more interactions like music to promote at least a peaceful atmosphere.
As a Palestinian who is for peace, I think what she did was not right.  I like the idea, but to hide her agenda from the kids and their families and tell them on the bus while they were on the way to the concert is just wrong.  I am sure she would have received lots of support had she been upfront with more details regarding the concert.
It makes me extremely sad to see so many examples that my fellow Jews who have suffered discrimination as I have(having had to leave my native land under the Nazi regime) that they have learned nothing from their own experience! After driving out the indigenous people (whatever you want to call them--Palestinians or Arabs) from the homes they inhabited and creating Israel, they continue to harass, persecute and even kill them.  Do they really believe that this will earn them goodwill in the world or make some kind of positive solution with the Palestinians which will be honored by righteous people? This Palestinian woman single-handedly tried to create an event for Holocaust survivors which
should help to unite, instead of causing division and more hatred.
While I am an American Jew born too late in the century to have experienced the Holocaust (thank G!d), I have to say that I sympathise greatly with those who endured it and witnessed its atrocities.

I am touched by the efforts of this woman, and I am deeply saddened that even in the Holy Land, politics are alive and well and strong enough to snuff the plans for peaceful resolution to the ageless conflict between Israeli Arabs and Jews.

My prayer is that G!d will reward Younis in this life and the next for her endeavours, and that He will likewise give to Hindi in this life what he justly deserves for his efforts at keeping alive a conflict the retirement of which is long overdue.  Shalom.
What is this world coming to?  If we do not learn from our past mistakes and put down the arms we will eventually blow this world and each other up.  There are so few Holocaust survivors left in this world. I hope the world does not forget or it will happen again.  This hatred of Muslim vs Jew or any other "infidel" will destroy us.
I wonder, why patriotic Palestinians allowed their children to study violin at all? Is it a Palestinian business, to play a violin? Do they want to be like those Jews? It is only fitting that they disbanded the group. It is surprising, they allowed it to exist long enough that the kids even learned to play.
Using these children to entertain their Jewish oppessors is no different than Jewish musicians having to play for their German oppessors over 60 years ago. Israel has used the events of WWII to justify violations of international law, the stealing of land and ethnic cleansing for over 6 decades. What might have been a good idea starting an orchestra has been turned into a political football with the children suffering because of Younis' misguided agenda. Until Israel ceases their ethnic cleansing of Palestine Palestinians should not be used to entertain their killers
Sad. Let's make something political out of something as pretty as young people mastering a concert and giving the pleasure of it to a bunch of very old people. Way to go Palestine. You guys must really have glass belly buttons.
Anyone who knows first hand what is happening in the Middle East knows that the Arabs and Jews are first cousins.  They want the problems to end, but government interests won't allow it.  I doubt that there will ever be peace in the Middle East.  If there were peace, then all of the incoherently chanting, unwashed fundamentalists would be out of a job.  Can you imagine if there were intellectual, artistic and economic freedom among all the people in the Middle East?  I guess that's way too much to hope for.
A concert for old people, by a well meaning "teacher', who sees no geographical boundaries in music, political issues with children, or prejudice between Israeli and Muslims when it comes to kindness is attacked, left homeless and is going to be robbed of money meant for her students.......Ala Akbar
i HONOR Wafaa Younis for attempting something POSITIVE against all odds.

Why is it we always kill the PEACE makers....
Typical of the middle east today. There is no way to be e moderate Palestinian. If you are lucky to be an Israeli Arab you are just banned from entering again. If you happen to be from the territories, god help you, you will be afforded the honour of asking for his help in person very quickly.
Here is a true candidate for the Nobel PEACE prize
Bravo Ilse Hadda  right on the money.
This story reminds me of a music professor in Venezuela who started teaching music years ago to children from poor, criminal and abusive background. Now the kids play music everywhere, in Venezuela and internationally. Since playing music, there is very little recidivism as far as kids returning to crime. Many of them have grown up to become good students and law-abiding citizens. And they could care less about politics. The same opportunity should also be afforded to the Palestinian children. It takes a village to raise a child, so it doesn't matter how far you live from Israel/Palestine, everyone should have a positive stake in the children's future.
EVERYTHING is political with regard to Israel/Palestine.  Israel tries to stifle Palestinian art and economy, to negate a people and continue to steal their land, while Palestinian leaders do not want to give legitimacy or cooperation to their oppressors/occupiers.
This lady will be rewarded in heaven big time and she will lead angles in praise to God with legions of violin players!!
she hopes that Palestinian boys will put down their stones.  Will the Israeli's put down there tanks and attack Helicoptors?  Will there be no more Israeli military occupation?  Will there be a right to return for Palestinian refugees?
DIDN'T THINK SO!
The sad commentary is that if she told the children and their parents of the concert and they decided to continue, the Palestinians (and those here saying they are for peace) would simply find another way to discredit them.  They are all phonies, especially those who claim to be for peace.
Although I wonder how these children truly didn't know that they were playing for such a political reason, still, kudos to her for trying to keep them away from violence in such a violent country.
The PA has been glamorized by the media as the "moderates" in the Arab war against the Jews. How are decent people supposed to react to this hateful attack by the PA against an Arab woman and school children who were just doing an act of kindness.
What is the Big Deal here?? Come on let's live in peace.
I want to respond to Marina,NY,NY. It is your attude and the same attude that the Palestinians hold that will keep them in a war that they can not win with Israel. I know some young Israeli Plaestinians in Mobile Alabama and they will not budge one inch to make peace. So in my opnion let them suffer with their unwillingness to come to peace.
Hi,
I am very touched by this article. I have some violins and strings and violin parts that I would like to donate to her. Is there a way to contact her to send here these things.
Thank You,
Rich Hurdle
I returned from visiting Israel for the first time 3 weeks ago on a christian holy land visit. I entered through the 28' high walls the palestinian people are being prisoned by in the West Bank. If you had seen the living conditions the Palestine people our living in your hearts would surely go out to them no matter what side of the conflict you support.  Please pray for peace and look to the future not the past.
why doesn't she try to teach the israelies to play a concert for the palestinians and put down their guns!
Marina--Your comment is a perfect example (unfortunately) of why there will be no peace in the Middle East in my lifetime.   In your view a Palestinian is only patriotic if they are not like "those Jews" learning how to bring the beauty of music to the world.   At least this woman is TRYING in her own small way to improve the world instead of hating.   Why are we so quick to lash out at her for telling these children who they were going to entertain while on the bus instead of giving her the benefit of the doubt that she did not think that there was going to be such an outcry by some foolish individuals?  I am Catholic and can see both sides of this complex religious issue between Israelis and Palestinians, it is fanaticism on both sides that are doom to any peace.
Thank you Mr Davis and also Marina.  It is people like you with your small hateful minds who are the cause of all the misery in the world today. Oh by the way, since when does a violin have a nationality?
What an ignorant comment. The ones who made this issue a political issue where the palestinian politicians. The girl was just trying to teach these kids something other than hate. How is LEARNING how to play an instrument unpatriotic? Just as I expected from a small mind, to put barriers on knowledge.
You know it is time that the jews let it go about the holocost,no i do not mean forget it.
The holocost happened in germany not the middle east, and it is as usual the european jew who screams and shouts about what is happenning in israel.
Can you imagine if america was told that we had to gibe back the land we took from mexico what would happen here.
The fact it is done and the palestinians are now having the same done to them as gemany did,i think we would fight for our homeland.
The majority of jews who have settled over there are from here and europe.
It has to become one state again and we have to discuss it openly like they do in isreal, here you cannot say anything that is not in total agreement with isreal.
Also the ones who actually in isreal who are the extremest do not work they are subsidized to study the torah and provided housing etc.
We have to learn to live together no race is superior to any other race.
I find it ironic tht the people who suffered the most prsecution are now causing these children and millions of other refugees live in camps, while thier homes are occupied by Israeli Jews! Enjoy the show!
I feel for the children. They are caught in the middle of a political agenda. If they are capable to play a small concert, they have probably been working long and hard at learning the stringed instruments. Now, they have had all of their hard worked pulled out from under them, and their orchestra has been disbanded. The heartache they are having to endure is wrong. It is wrong that people are making this political... All they did was play for some elderly people.
You are right Marina. Why would Palestinians want to learn anything cultural or explore outside their self oppressed territory? Why see what the civilized world does or looks like? See demoracy, technology and higher education in action? Why bother, isn't it just better for them to live the way that they do? As a matter of fact how can you live in NY with so many Jews around you? Why don't you just go live in the West Bank or better try Gaza.
I understand Hindi's rage; why not tell the children who they were playing for?  Certainly they would not be against the Holocaust survivors, but rather against the Israeli government that is in itself inflicting their own Holocaust on Palestinians, esp. in Gaza.

It is a shame that survivors of the Holocaust are inflicting their own Holocaust on Palestinians:

***DOV WEISGLASS, ADVISER TO ISRAEL’S PRIME MINISTER OLMERT, SAID IN 2006: “THE IDEA IS TO PUT THE PALESTINIANS ON A DIET, BUT NOT TO MAKE THEM DIE OF HUNGER.”***

*****

STATS: 50,800+ GAZANS ARE NOW HOMELESS
400,000+ ARE WITHOUT RUNNING WATER

ALL LACK BASIC NECESSITIES

900,000+ PALESTINIANS HAVE BEEN DISPLACED FROM THEIR HOMELAND SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE ISRAELI OCCUPATION IN 1948 [WWW.HUMANRIGHTSHOUSE.ORG.]

Too unfortunate... this is NOT an issue between Jews and Muslims, as the media wants you to believe.  Rather, this is an issue of Zionists forcing their ideologies on others; what if Christian and Muslim Palestinians do not believe in the Zionist ideology, that 'God gave them the land??'  Even if they don't believe in your particular belief, you will still enforce it on them?  Now, that's NOT A DEMOCRACY; THAT'S AN ETHNOCRACY.  And besides, many Jews are against the state of Israel, believing they should not get their own homeland until their messiah returns.  And even Jews who do not believe this are against the human rights violations imposed by Israel on a daily basis, inflicted on an already victimized Palestinian civilian population.
Sick. The only way to end this conflict is through the children. By not not poisoning their minds with hate. The Palestinians do nothing but shoot themselves in the foot at every opportunity. Some of the comments on here are ridiculous also. European Jew vs. Muslim rather than Jew vs. Muslim? Your an idiot. The vast majority of Jews living in the ME were forcibly exiled from their homes in Jordan, Morocco, Egypt, etc. These were not Euro Jews. Plain rubbish. Read the Koran and the Sunnah, you'll see. Jew hatred is rampant.
It is said that music is a universal language.  This action by the Palistinian political leader is more evidence that the Palestinian people are being cut off from any communication which will lead to their being able to reach common cause with their neighbors in Israel.  That they do not know of the holocost wrought by the Nazis, gives rise to the question whether they know what a holocost really is and leads one to wonder if they have even heard of what has been going on in Darfur with their fellow Muslims.
This just shows the mindset that prefers destruction over building up, death over life and a lie over truth. As long as hate trumps love, there will be this violence and backward thinking that enslaves the Palestinians.
The abused become the abusers. Israel treats Palestinians the way they were treated during the holocost. These children in Jenin have grown up in a concentration camp witnessing things that no children should witness. The idea of playing music has good intention however to trick them isn't.
“Adnan Hindi…called the Holocaust a political issue.”

It is a politcal issue because people KEEP it a political issue.  Did anyone ask the people at the concert if they minded so very much that the children were Palestinian?  I am sure they do not hold the children responsible for their past pain.

Learn then leave the past in the past. No one holds a grudge like the Arab nations.
Everyone's missing the point.  The Israeli's have taken Palestinian land, divided its people, dehumanized them, and now to add salt to injury, induced their children to honor the holocaust while continuing to deny the existense of the atrocities committed against the Palestinian people.  This is a like a dirty joke.
I commend her efforts but i understand why the Palestinians took offence. Could she not see that it was a politically charged concert potentially offensive to the Palestinians.
Where are the Jewish boys entertaining or helping elderly Palestinian victims. As always it is always about the jewish victims.
The jews have not learned from their past. They have no empathy with their neighbors. They are doing many of the same things that were done to them.
She missed the point that the boys are the victims now. The elderly survivors should have let go of their past long ago and used their knowledge to be peacemakers with their neighbors. They should be entertaining the boys in equal measure, buying their instruments perhaps as they can well afford to.
We see the Jews as revelling in their victim status while dishing out pain to others.
I commend her for trying to do something peaceful but she totally missed the fact that the jews are hurting the Palestinians and the concert was tactless and shows that the Jews do not get it.
Honesty with the students would have been the best thing as it always is, i wonder why she left it so late to tell them.
Is she aknowledging the Palestinian culture or trying to change them to fit with Jewish ideals.
I don't think its right to take advantage of children in that manner. I say this only because of the way Israeli's treat the Palestinians (Even President Carter calls it apartheid). It seems to me that all they (Palestinians) have is their dignity and playing for the alleged holocaust(?) survivors isn't really on top of their agenda. I mean what about the infinte number Palestinians that Israel has murdered and continues to murder? I commend everyone who works towards peace. And to dedicate a song to an Israeli terrorist???? thats pure exploitation of children for political gain.
Truth be told. After the war in Iraq and Bush's lies. Im not sure what really happened in WWII. It seems the   victor has the luxury of writing history. If the holocaust happened it is awful but I wonder why if someone questions the holocaust they are condemned. what is Israel hiding? Did Hitler really commit these unspeakable crimes? Or is this just another lie by Israel?

May God Bless You Wafaa Younis (Yevarechecha HaShem MiTzion). "May Hashem Bless you from Zion, and may you gaze upon the goodness of Jerusalem, all the days of your life..."(Psalm 128:5)

pam, for your information more than half the jews living in israel are not from europe they  come from arab countries  from which they were driven out. boes that change your understanding of the situation?
