'Please help me,' Taliban hostage begs

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – "I am Khadija Abdul Qahaar. I am a convert to Islam. I have been advised to make this video. I am going to be killed at anytime." So began a chilling video released on Wednesday by Taliban militants who are holding Qahaar, a Canadian woman, hostage somewhere in the tribal areas of Pakistan.

Qahaar, whose former name is Beverly Giesbrecht, converted to Islam after 9/11. A 55-year-old journalist from Vancouver, she tried to travel into North Waziristan – one of the most dangerous areas in the world – last November with two Pakistani reporting assistants.

VIDEO: 'Please help me' says Taliban hostage

She wanted to interview survivors of the first ever U.S. drone attack in Bannu, a town in the Northwest Frontier Province, and then travel on to Miranshah, the main city of North Waziristan.

But Taliban militants, who patrol the Bannu-Miranshah road, intercepted Qahaar's taxi and dragged her and her two Pakistani companions out of their vehicle at gunpoint.

The video released Wednesday shows Qahaar sitting in a dark room with a dagger pointing at her as she makes a desperate plea for help.

"The time is very short now and my life is going to end, so I need someone to help me – either the Pakistani government or my own country. I want to go home," she said.

She pointed to the dagger and said that the Taliban were likely to behead her – as they did to Polish engineer Piotr Stanczak in February – if a ransom of $2 million was not paid by the end of March.

"These people are serious. Please help me," she said.

Freelance journalism trip gone awry
Qahaar runs a Web site called Jijadunspun, which says its mission is to provide independent journalism about the Middle East and an "alternate voice to Western media."

According to Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper, she left Vancouver last April, spent several months in London and then landed in Lahore, Pakistan, at the beginning of August. She carried two letters verifying that she was on a freelance reporting assignment, the newspaper reported.

Shortly before she was abducted, she posted an entry on her Web site appealing for financial help to leave Pakistan.

"Pakistan is now erupting into a full scale war zone," she wrote in October, according to the Associated Press. "We have been in some very sensitive areas and even Islamabad (the capital) is now locked down. As foreigners, we must leave the country; however, we do not have the funds to get out."

In an earlier video, released at the end of February, two militants carrying AK-47 assault rifles were shown standing behind her. She pointed to the two men and said they were ready to kill her if their demands were not met. She begged the Pakistan and Canadian governments to accept the demands of her kidnappers so they would set her free.

In the latest video, she said her situation had not improved since the last video.

"Please do something to help me," she begged in a choked voice. "The responsibility of this will be on somebody's shoulders. I have done nothing wrong. Help me and save my life."

This lady converted to islam after 911 and traveled to a known Taliban area in an attempt to report an "alternate western-media" story.  It is a little ironic that she's being held captive by the people that I'm sure she was trying to report in a sympathetic light.  Extremists don't care if you're media....you are a target and a bargaining chip, find a way to spin that "alternate western-media."
Well you go to these places knowing  this can and may happen. I feel for her, but if you can't believe that God or who ever you worship has a better plan then what good is your religion?
First, as a convert to Islam you should not fear death. It is something we will all see. Jana is far better then this world. Second, You should not have been hanging around areas where Taliban lunatics are in control.
If you cannot see the problems with this story I am concerned.  Between issues with the photos and her story, there is an excellent chance this is a scam.  I have experience in this area and her story (as reported)has too many holes in it to fly.  I will be waiting to see how this story ends and wish her well if I am wrong.
She knowling went to the worst area and didn't expect what has happend to her? She now want $2M to get her set free. Right. She made her bed, now she can sleep in it.
Why in hell did she go there in the first place?  Why did she convert to Islam AFTER 9/11?  She did a stupid thing, and now she wants someone to bail her out.
She should of stayed home.  Sounds apathetic, but it's the truth.

Bad things happen to people who put themselves in harm's way, especially with intention.
serves you right. That's what happens when you deal with terrorists. And to think, you shunned your own countries values in favor of pakistan's and now they are holding you for ranson..Can anyone say IRONY>........................ha ha
She knowling went to the worst area and didn't expect what has happened to her? She now wants $2M to get her set free. Right. She made her bed, now she can sleep in it.
Unfortunately she did do something wrong.  Going over there in the first place was a mistake.  If you choose to be put yourself in harms way when it is not warranted then you must accept the consequences.
I went to this woman's website.  I didn't read much of it but to me it appeared to be anti- american pro muslim propaganda.  She even has a whole page putting doubt on Osama Bin Laden's involvement in 9/11.  Looks like she's been putting a spin on her website about how the bad guys really aren't the bad guys and the EEEEvil US government is just picking on Muslims for no reason. Well I know good and bad is a all a matter of opinion, but I know if I was in her shoes I would think that I picked the wrong good guys.
She "converted to Islam" afet 9/11,  What does that tell you?  Your either on "our side" or the terrorists side.  I guess she choose and is now a victim of the very terrorists she loved enough to join Islam for.  Gotta love Karma.
You try to make a name for yourself by going into one of the most dangerous and deadly areas of the world, where no one with common sense would dare to go; and then you get yourself captured by terrorists.  YOu then plead for help from anyone in Canada or in the free world to help you out of this situation, and claim you "have done nothing wrong".  YES, YOU HAVE DONE SOMETHING WRONG.  YOU INTENTIONALLY PUT YOUR LIFE AT RISK BY GOING INTO THESE AREAS, AND NOW YOU WANT THE WORLD TO SAVE YOU AND FEEL SORRY FOR YOU. You, lady, are as dumb as a child sticking their tongue to a frozen lamp post; the only difference is, that a child is not old enough to know better.  You have no excuse!
She converts to islam AFTER 9/11, well guess what sweetpea, your on your own, have a nice day, now you know the meaning of "TERROR"
She is surprized by the reality of Islam.
This sounds much more like a financial scam than reality.
Ask AIG for the cash.
yes you have done something wrong, you had no business traveling to a war zone, the liberal attitude of I can do whatever I want but when things go wrong,  appeal to the good old American's for help.  I think that tune is well worn out and the world needs to get the message also the president and congress. No more american dollars (Foreign aid, give  aways) I am sorry but we have let politicians bankrupt this country. Time to take care of our own.
Another awful situation with a hostage, but since when does the Taliban ask for a ransom to let someone go? Isn't it usually to set free their people who are imprisoned somewhere else?
It sounds a little sketchy and there's certainly not enough info to get to the bottom of this story. I didn't think the Taliban let anyone live this long either.
I certainly feel sorry for the lady, but she must carry full responsibility for her actions.  If possible I would pay a ransum, but it would only encourage others to keep doing it.  I will pray for you and wish you the best of luck.
Play with fire get burned.
True she did nothing wrong but make a bad choice.
But it is all her fault for going there.
That is awful news. I feel extremely sad for her. Doing this to an older person (or any person) is not right. However, why do people continue to go into these countries when knowing full well that this could happen. The Middle East is not a vacation spot right now and your best bet is to not go there at all. I'm sure the guys holding her are questioning why an outsider would be there. Everything runs on suspision and if your caught your dead because they will think you are spy.
I feel for this woman but it is kinda ironic that the people she has dedicated a career to defending are going to kill her and she is now asking the people she made a career out of vilifying for help and saying that her life will be on their shoulders if they dont.  just saying.....
I'm sorry lady but I have no sympathy for you; if you had read before you left you would know that women are not normally highly thought of in Islam controlled countries and just because you decided to convert to Islam (shallow excuse in my opinion) shouldn't have guaranteed your safety in Pakistan, Afghanistan, or anywhere else that is a Islam nation.
Don't send her a nickel. I too think it is a scam, and we don't want them to have more money to attack us.
I feel for her if this is legitimate and she truly is/was just a journalist trying to document this time in history.  If however, she is in on it in the hopes of generating income for the taliban, and is actually one of them, then of course I have no mercy for her.  Since the threat has been made public, I would think the taliban will have to kill her to keep face, regardless if she is one of theirs now or not, if a ransom is not paid.
She changes her name, goes into an area she knows is dangerous and now she wants out??  Guess Islam isn't all it's cracked up to be now is it??
All I can say is WOW!!!! As previosly stated. Karma is a b i t c h!!!LOL
if this is for real she gets what she desrves. but most likely this is just a scam. i wonder how much her cut is!!
No one sees the irony of the Taliban killing a fellow Muslim, let alone a woman, in the name of Allah?  I do not see anywhere in Islam where this is allowed.  Yes, she put herself in harms way.  I wish I could have heard more of her voice.  We need someone to speak who is not encumbered by the ideology of the Taliban or the money of corporate journalism.  While she certainly was sided with the ideology I would like to have heard her report. In some ways I guess I have....
Were it me, I'd try and broadcast coordinates for an airstrike. No deals with kidnappers/terrorists.
It's a well staged setup,  first she asks for money to be able to leave pakistan, now since that didn't work her friends are holding knives and AK-47s for her????  If your gut (intuition) says it's crap, then it's crap.
She converts to islam AFTER 9/11, well guess what sweetpea, your on your own, have a nice day, now you know the meaning of "TERROR"
It is a dangerous world out there. This situation puts all in a delicate situation. Every journalist is aware of the dangers in an adventure like this. It puts the country and the world at large in a difficult situation.
This woman converts to Islam, sets up an independent journalist to counter western media and these 'militants' take her hostage and threaten to kill her.  These folks aren't terrorists or muslim fundamentalists, they're just ordinary criminals looking for money.  My guess is that's what most of these people are, at least the higher ups who use a twisted version of muslim theology to get the uneducated sheep to do their bidding.
Let’s review the facts in this case: She converted after 9/11, so she is a terrorist sympathizer. She was not officially sponsored into the country by a legitimate news organization. She reported that Islamabad was in “lock-down”, so she was in Islamabad where there is an embassy that could have helped her. She appealed for financial support on-line. and when that didn't generate any money she moved further into the "badlands". She was “captured” outside Bannu deeper into a Country she described as needing to get out of. I feel bad for the incident victims, but she’s not one and this looks like a money scam if you ask me. No one should pay this ransom and reinforce stupidity.
Why don't the people who she went to write about help her? I can't beleive she could would willing go to one of the most dangerous places on earth and think she would be welcome with open arms. She's in a pickle now but she only has herself to blame for it.
If the ransom is paid...it's only helping the nut cases and more kidnappings will happen
She knew the risks.  She didnt have enough money to return, but 2 million would help.  At least she has changed clothes.  I dont feel sorry for her. I think there is something terribly wrong with this picture.
Either she's in on it or she's really naive.
did i read this right?

Journalist takes on mission to smear the US campaign of trying to wipe out taliban.
Journalist gets caught by Taliban.
Journalist begs the US to save her from taliban?  (after realizing the only organization doing anything right now about Taliban, IS the US.)

eitherway.. seriously dont go to these places unless you are prepared to accept death if caught.  Its a no brainer that this is very dangerous area, and everyone should consider/accept the risk involved to make news.
How sad.  On so many levels.

I take issue with the fascist comment of akbar, that journalists "stick their nose where it does not belong." If not for journalists, government propoganda is the only information we'd receive.  And how does he think he got the story to comment on in the first place?  Very heartless. Very ignorant. Very sad.
She is an idiot! It looks like another liberal will bite the dust trying to give the world a hug.

Hello, Jason?!?  Why would you think this woman is a liberal?  Obviously you just like to throw out insults towards liberals even when it makes no sense whatsoever.

First off, a "liberal" would never convert to Islam.  Talk about taking a step off the cliff!  Secondly, she wasn't there to "give the world a hug".  She was going to spew the Islamic propoganda and see if the world was listening.
Zero sympathy here.
How many heads did she need to see "removed" to stop her "conversion"?
I know I do not care what happens to this idiot!
No sympathy here. She did it to herself. It comes with the territory - she left her own country of her own accord and knew the risks - why would this be on anyone else's shoulder but hers?
If this is true, then I feel bad for her and her family. However, since it was her decision to go to such a dangerous place, then this will be on her shoulders, and the shoulders of the Taliban holding her hostage ... not the shoulders the Canadian Government, or of anyone else.
Maybe she went over there to try and teach them Curling...LOL.  You know them crazy Canadians!!  Let me get this straight.  We don't pay, and 1 crazy, diluted idiot pays the price, or we do pay, and the money gets used to buy more guns to kill more brave American soldiers.  HHHmmmmmmm......Sorry crazy lady, but maybe you should have converted to Mormonism or something a little less violent.
It is sad to read about the plight of this women. It is even more disheatening to realize that she is a convert to Islam and that her fellow Muslim captors do not seem to care about this. But aside from this, one has to realize that she choose to go to Pakistan. She choose to go to one of the most dangerous places on the planet. Her choice resulted in her circumstance. For the governments of Pakistan or Canada to pay for her release will only increase the chances that this will happen again to others. The responsibility for what is going to happen to her does rest on someones shoulder, her own. She has no one to blame but herself.
I am a victim of my own stupidity, so now the western world has to rescue me.  Sorry lady you wanted to live on the wild side so don't expect anyone to step in to rescue you.
How do we know she is not working for them? Why would she, knowing the dangers,  go into that God forsaken place. Then, expect anyone to believe her when she cries for help. Like a wolf in sheeps clothing. I am sorry, but I could not trust her.
Don't blame Islam for the behavior of extremist kooks and a naive liberal journalist. Assuming this is not a set up, she made her bed. If she truly converted to Islam, than she should not fear her death. Hard lesson.
Why didn't she help her own ? It get so tiresome to hear about all these groups,go to every country to "help" and every day I drive home, watch my local news and watch my neighbors loose their livelihoods, homes. Hard ,honest working Americans.Where is their relief ?
