A look inside Bushehr, Iran’s nuke facility

BUSHEHR, Iran – As we were bused from the airport in the southwestern coastal city of Bushehr toward Iran’s nuclear power plant, the most noticeable feature was the large number of anti-aircraft guns dotted across the landscape to protect the facility from attack.

It was a rare occasion – after years of delays, Iranian and Russian engineers carried out a series of critical tests at Iran’s first nuclear power plant Wednesday. The Iranian authorities offered a group of journalists a guided tour of the facility to showcase the event.

VIDEO: Iran showcases its nuclear plant to reporter

The facility – which Iran says will be used to generate electricity – was built by the Russians at a cost of about a billion dollars.

The tests on Wednesday were essentially a dry run, without enriched uranium in the rods, just lead, before full-scale operations are due to begin in the coming months.

"We are very proud. Our power plant is on its way to being ready, despite all the pressure from the West not wanting us to advance," said Mohsen Shirzai, an engineer at the plant who was giving us a guided tour.

The tour itself was sanitized and carefully stage managed, but that was not the point.

The Iranians wanted to send a clear message to the international community: They have made a massive leap forward in their plans to develop nuclear technology, their nuclear plant is in its final stages and in a matter of months Iran will be a nuclear energy-powered country, despite efforts by American, Israel and Europe to curb the program.

‘A nuclear Iran’

"The United States should face reality and accept living with a nuclear Iran," said Vice President Gholam Reza Aghazadeh, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran.

Aghazadeh went on to say that Iran has increased the number of centrifuges enriching uranium to 6,000, up from 5,000 in November. The move was in defiance of the U.N. Security Council demands that Iran halt all enrichment activities because it is a key process in the development of a nuclear bomb – as well as nuclear energy.

Meantime, the Russian influence was plain to see everywhere at the plant. Dozens of Russian engineers were milling around the facility, teaching and working. Most of the signs in the plant were either in Persian or Russian. The Russians even had their own camp within the site with accommodations and shops selling Russian produce, an area that was closed off to Iranian personnel.

During a joint press conference with the Russians and the Iranians inside the facility I asked Sergei Kiriyenko, the head of Russia’s state Rosatom Atomic Corporation, how he could be confident that Iran will not develop a nuclear warhead.

But his Iranian counterpart, Aghazadeh, wouldn’t let Kiriyenko answer, saying that he was in a better position to answer that question. In his response, he unsurprisingly towed the government line that Iran has no intention of producing a nuclear warhead.

Point of pride
Signs of progress here at Busher are an enormous source of pride for Iranians. But coupled with Iran launching a satellite into space and reports that it has accumulated large quantities of enriched uranium – they are major causes for concern in the United States and Israel.

Does Iran really have enough uranium to make a nuclear weapon?

One thing is clear – if it doesn't today, it can speed up the process substantially, now that they have mastered these other complicated procedures.

Iran, now with nukes-soon to be,will make them more aggressive with there military and the supporting terrorist-the other arab nations are scared of Iran and Iran will push hard against the other arab nations,Iran with nukes is very scary and dangerous as they want to control all of arab land, the usa will have to protect the arab nations,I would tell them that you have to sell me cheap oil for protection.
Forget the debate whether Iran is going to have nuclear weapon. Why not start charting plans to deal with Iran as a nuclear power?
I am very happy Iran-has resurrected itself and the persian empire----Iran should not feel threatend by israel---since this occupiers can easily be eliminated----good going Iran
It is so amazing to read so many negative points of view toward a country that has done nothing wrong but to ask for its equal rights. Iran is a member of IAEA and if the West was not just after undermining Iran’s will to become a more modern and influential country, they could have easily monitor all Iranian Nuclear activities through this organization. The fact is Iranians have learned to live with double standards of the West for decades now, but they have not and will not allow those double standards to stop them from building up their country to the place it deserves to be in.
Iran will become a Nuclear power sooner or later, now the West can either accept that and start a series of direct and respectful negotiations with Tehran so when the time comes Iran would be a country with Nuclear Technology and a friend of the West or they can continue attacking Iran on every chance they get and end up with an isolated, suspicious, and closed country with a Nuclear know how…
I strongly believe that the second option is a lot worst for the West than it is for the rulers of Iran…
US: we gona put interceptors and radar in Poland!
Russia: ok, here is nuclear plant for Iran, enjoy intercepting it:)
Actually, it's not the weapon aspects at all that worry me, it's the nuclear waste issue that is of real concern.  Were already posioning the planet in so many ways.  This is just another nail in the coffin for all of us.
Well done IRAN. And Iran has a full righ to make atomic bomb.
Rob, "the us and israel should fire half of their nuclear stockpiles at russia.  The country responsible for arming the terrorist in Tehran"

Where do you think the israelis got their nukes from?  THE USA.  Let's hope that if the iranians get a bomb they do not have the same philosophy that you do.
oh no....the UN told them what to do and they didnt listen...the world is gonna end now! =P

but seriously i dont really consider iran a nuclear power...they have one power plant that took them what 30 years to build? i think its great for them to be moving forward in technology. an so what if they start building nuclear bombs...im sure the US has spy satellites hovering over the plant even now watching them closely. We need to stop being the World Police and let nations live how they want...not force them into following our ways of life
Good! Finally a scientific end to global warming.
Nice looks like things are going great with Iran.

Dudes, what's wrong with iran having nukes? We should keep our pie whole shut. Israelis killed more than 1000 innocent people in gaza for so called hamas (by the way hamas were elected by the people). Fricking israel have nukes why can't iran have.

Being said that,
As a american i think we should get close to iran (forget the past) and get to know them, what they want and why? Otherwise there will be another iraq for us fighting forever with our so called "GREAT" economy.

I have seen many comments that said "strike them". i dont' know why they say that? but it is clear that these *****hole are the ones who voted fricking bush in office twice and who ultimately landed us in this great period of history (economy bloomming and two winning wars and american image in world superb).

Andy
The Iranian are sponsoring Hizbulla and Hammas. Both have attacked Israel before and Israelis are subjected to a daily barage of missles from Hammas. Being attacked by a proxy of Iran is the same as being attacked by Iran.  Israel existence depends on not allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon.
The Iranians have nothing to lose. When they send in suicide bombers they believe when they die they will go to Paradise. I say, let's help them ALL go to Paradise. We'd be doing them a FAVOR.
Its the end of the world as we know it. No need for planes or shoe bombs anymore. Kiss your kids every chance you get. Tell your family you love them everytime you talk to them. MAY GOD BLESS US ALL!
Garnett has it right. What most to seem to forget is that extremists don't care about anything but the advancement of their religon. They don't care if we die, they kill in the name of religon. We are all just infidels because we are non believers of Islam. Death to them is being a matyr. Just like the Japanese Kamakazi pilot. Death to them is nothing but a way to move on to a better after life. Killing Americans, Israelites or any non believers justifies their cause as a religon and their cause as a human sacrafice. Do you think their terrorists with bombs strapped to them have any final thoughts about killing us before they detonate the bomb? I think not.
Half the people on this board are stupid and should refrain from reproduction or trying to incite violence against Iran for their own benefit. Nothing bad is going to happen to your precious Israel even if Iran had all the nukes in the world. Give me a break.
I doubt very seriously that the Iranians dont' realize that if they were to develop nuclear weapons, that their use by them would surely bring the destruction of their target, followed quickly by the destruction of Iran.  They are not fools.

----------------------------------------------------

That's the theory that's kept the world from going up in an atomic fireball so far, mutually assured destruction.  The only problem with that is Iran is controlled by religious zealots who not only have no fear of death, actively believe in martyrdom.  They'd use a nuke to take us out even if we leveled Iran to a smoking crater.  In their mind they're going to a glorious after life and will be honored for killing their enemies.  Even if most Iranians don't think like that, it doesn't matter when their government does.
Welp, if they eventually use a nuke they better build more than one 'cause the west has been cooking up nukes since the 40's.
Its just a matter of time before some Islamic nation obtains and uses or sells a nuke to a terrorist organization.  The count down has started to a Nuclear strike on US soil.

Now that is a very true statement i wouldn't worry about iran... its who they sell it to that is my concern.. i wouldn't look for something to fly from over there just do to the fact that they would take it on the chin also. if it came from inside the states whole different story.
In the history of the world, at least last hundreds of years, when did Iran attack another country. Can we say the same about US, Israel, UK, Russia, Germany, and more.
One needs to ask questions and stop reacting about what is being fed by the news media.
Do you think that leaders in Iran do not understand that the country would be destroyed in two days if they use a nuclear weapon?
People, stop the paranoia, Iran's nuclear is peaceful. Even if it is not, be assured that it will be only to keep a balance of power. Why is it that some states can have nuclear technology and some cannot. It is all politics and it is dirty.
Both blue line on the Israel flag represent the Euphrates and the Nile, the delineation of the land give by God to his chosen people. Israel has no official map of its country. They tell me Israel is the only country which does not allow Nuclear inspectors in their country, why is it OK for Israel and not for Iran to have Nuclear weapons.  England has new nuclear powered submarine which have  eight silos for the containment of  nuclear weapons, why it is OK for them and not for Iran, each one of these nuclear weapons on that submarine has a range of 5,200 Kilometers... Why.
Mandela said he was forty seven years old when he saw his first elephant in spite of being born in Africa. Someone talked and convinced that innocently charming and kind women, Queen Victoria, of the need to protect the African wild life and fauna with their required presence in protecting the environment, yet someone convinced that women to give all the African diamonds to one man, and that  three month before England attacked South Africa.
Socrates said it very clearly that someday someone will come and explain to us something we fail to understand. When he said it was worst to harm someone because he harmed who had because you harm you first. When you read Socrates you finally discover why religious people seldom quote Socrates. He makes you realize  that reverence is cause by fear, he talk of  apprenticeship  of virtues of justice in democracy, and also forewarns us clearly to be very cautious as to whom we allow tell stories to our children. Yet here in Canada we allow every evening a six o’clock the BBC come tell me stories of the world, with only one purpose in mind, and that is to slant the events of the day with a favorable slant for the benefit of their self interest. Why else would the British be willing to spend tax money to inform Canadians on the meaning of daily events? Gandhi once said that India will be free the day we lose the fear of the sword.
Gandhi, Mandela and Obama have something in common, their “ African wisdom”.
Recently when Obama was being interviewed by the Saudi TV, Obama clearly said that terrorist who would come to him with a clenched fist would be met with an open hand. CNN did not comment that statement either, because they too fail to grasp what that Palestinian fisherman, once taught us, to unconditionally love one another, when  don't deserve it,  then it’s simple, it’s because we need it. If love is a normal behavior amongst men, then why it is that love is mentioned so many times in the Ten Commandments.
These few words are written in kindness and without intent to offend. There is a word missing in our vocabulary, we it should created a missing word which when understood would prevent us from being offended.
That new word is:  Enculturated- Scotoma.
Iran has full right to develop peaceful nuclear technology. If the US and Isael and the west want a nuclear free middleast then they should start de-nuclearizing themself first. Instead of preaching to others, they should come clean first. Israel is the bigest threat in the middleast. Iran's nuclear power will belance the region. US and Israel have no right to keep developing their nuclear wapon and dictating other not to even develop peacefull nuclear technology.
Why didn't anyone offer wind or solar power generation in exchange for the programs being stoped
I think the world should force the Israel to join In Non-proliferation Treaty before they talk non sense about Iran
Get real people, Iran's president has made it clear that he feels god told him that he would be the one to wipe Israel off the map. WAKE UP! They are sitting on the largest supply of oil in the world, and instead of using there natural resources they are going to build a Nuke Plant. Please. This is Crap, and if you believe the liars in there office (sponsered by Communisist), then you must be stupid.

Is this how Obama is going to allow Iran to get nukes?  A new marketing strategy.  The American public has to be dense to believe this drivel.  Iran has stated many times that Isreal should not exist and that they would it.

I notice one person stating that if the nuke was ever used the US and Isreal should destroy Russia.  Isreal would be the target.  The US wouldn't do anything.  We lost 4,000 people while liberating a country from a tyrant we put in power and everyone went crying about like babies.  The US has lost it's honor.

We all knew Obama would back down and let the Iranians have nukes.
Get REAL!  All different cultures have been predicting a catastrophe in 2012 and it just may be the Iranians that cause it!  C'mon....who the hell do they think they're fooling?? They have EVERY INTENTION on making a nuclear weapon and using it.  We can all thank the russians for that!  But...those goofs will be dying with the rest of the world!
Great, this means we have a new nation running in Nuclear Power, this are good news for the Iranians, although the US is not to comfortable with this, but don't listen to a selfish bunch of people who want to control you, do what you have to, let those dogs bark, after all their agony is your victory.
I think along with great power comes great responsibility. That´s gonna be the case with Iran too. This is a free world, there is no reasonable explanation why we can own thousands of nuclear warheads while Iran can´t even build a single nuclear plant. I do believe that with nuclear power it´s just like with guns. Give them to everyone and there´s mutual respect, give them to just a few and there´s oppression.
This article is aimed at arousing fear. It is hardly objective. Here are the fact: The Bushehr nuclear power plant was started under the shah and was initially started to be built by the Germans.  At that time the US encouraged Iran to develop nuclear power. 2. The Bushehr facility is a power plant that will produce 1,000 Megawatts of electricity badly needed in Iran where there are chronic electricity outages. 3. All spent fuel from the plant will be sent back to Russia under the agreement with that country subject to IAEA monitoring. Even the Bush admin was satisfied with that arrangement. so no threat to anyone. However, once the fuel in installed in the rods and Israel bombs the facility there could be serious problems of contamination not only in Iran but across the Gulf in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait(remember Chernobyl anyone?). So hopefully Israel will think twice before bombing the plant. Finally, why is it that nuclear production of electricity is good and allowed for Christian,Jewish,Hindu and Budhist, and Communist states but forbidden for Muslim states?
first the world froze, then it flooded,i truly think the next time it will be burned and only god knows when, those those that dont realize this are fooling themselves. read the bible and pray for those that dont
Don't we understand Iran's leaders are on a dangerous jihad ego-trip, which will begin with Israel being wiped out (it's so small, one bomb is enough for the whole country), and then Iran will turn against the whole Christian world? What's wrong with the Occident? Some urgent action is needed. Not words.
bush obfuscates and denies reality....it is a sad testimony that, since Americans are ignora*t SUV driving beer swilling rednec+&*(, we can't accept other nations are SO FAR advances as to be unreachable, EVEN with a trillion dollar bailout....

this goes for energy, education, transporation...

yet xenophobes want to block all immigrants who are solely responsible for us even having a semblance of modernity and not turning into a gun toting backwoods swamp on inbreds....which are turning into.....

the ONLY glimmer of hope was that Obama won resoundingly...I think everything happens for a reason...same reason I am a tiny bit glad GOP still has ability of checks and balances, if Dems ruled totally we would probably repeat past mistakes of earlier, giving homes out to everybody, etc....

there HAS to be checks and balances...

when dubya was prez, GOP rules all three branches...

look what happened....

I think GOP kicking their own *()& when Obama holds out olive branch and they act like sullen teens, i.e. obstructionists....they need to get a clue and act like adults.....FOR ONCE!!!!
I can't believe I am reading that a few think it is a good thing and that it will offset Israels.  Israel won't nuke its neighbors but wait till Iran feeds one or two to the terrorist.  They will get used on israel and the US.  If you think they are making them for peaceful purposes you have your head stuck where the sun doesn't shine.
Attacking Iran is like breaking a hornet's nest. Govenment of Iran should be overthrown.
The Iranians are no fools. But I must say that Mike Hughes from Dallas is an idiot.
A few people have commented that the IEAE has declared that there is no direct evidence that Iran will use this technology for weapons - so why does Europe and America think that Iran will do so? Let's see... 1) Iran was caught RED-HANDED purchasing bogus weapons schematics on the black market, and 2) the government has called for Israel to be 'wiped off the map', and 3) representatives from Iran sat down with European and U.S. representatives in 2005 saying that they'd 'stop supplying weapons to insurgents in Iraq if Iran was allowed to continue with its nuclear program.

Does that sound like a 'peaceful pursuit' to you?? GET REAL!
They won't openly send off a missle with a nuclear head on it they will feed them to the terror groups they sponsor and it will be planted then deny everything like they always do.  their leadership is crazy and can't be trusted even tho Obama wants to be their frinds and sit down and talk to the terrorist
I can't believe how naive some of these posters are.  Has anyone watched the 60 minutes interview with the Iranian leader???  This situation could be the turning point for the world.  It's like giving Hitler the bomb in 1944.  WAKE UP!!!!
Iran has the right to build nuclear power plants and the right to build nuclear weapons if it so chooses. Iran also has the right to cease to exist if it uses those weapons on others for any reason other than self defense, first strike/premtive strike not included.
Once the genie is out of the bottle, its too late to put it back. Welcome to the real world.
Has anyone ever asked themselves why terrorist want to bomg the US. It's because we protect Israel.  Let's be clear. Jews migrated to Palestine and when they had enough nubers delcared themsleves a seprate state, kind of like what Europians  did here in the US. Hello Indians we come in peace.  Wow it more of than them, lets drive them off their land and claim it as ours. Don't get me wrong majority rules but how you treat natives shows the world the type of people you really are. Jewish people need to realize that they have to respect all life in that region not just Jewish life. I mean how would you react here in the US if another race or culutre was slowly taking over.  I guess we would put up a fence to keep them out and clain they are here illegaly, but wait I bet the Indians think the same way.
Anyone who thinks that allowing the Iranians to have a nuclear weapon is a good thing for the world is missing more than a few screws!

The Iranians have made it clear that they intend to destroy Israel and kill all the jews.  That alone should set the tone.  They have also made it clear their hatred for the Great Satan (Oh, thats us, the United States).

Is it fair for us to stop them?  Who cares, we must stop them or be prepared for the carnage.
