A look inside Bushehr, Iran’s nuke facility

BUSHEHR, Iran – As we were bused from the airport in the southwestern coastal city of Bushehr toward Iran’s nuclear power plant, the most noticeable feature was the large number of anti-aircraft guns dotted across the landscape to protect the facility from attack.

It was a rare occasion – after years of delays, Iranian and Russian engineers carried out a series of critical tests at Iran’s first nuclear power plant Wednesday. The Iranian authorities offered a group of journalists a guided tour of the facility to showcase the event.

VIDEO: Iran showcases its nuclear plant to reporter

The facility – which Iran says will be used to generate electricity – was built by the Russians at a cost of about a billion dollars.

The tests on Wednesday were essentially a dry run, without enriched uranium in the rods, just lead, before full-scale operations are due to begin in the coming months.

"We are very proud. Our power plant is on its way to being ready, despite all the pressure from the West not wanting us to advance," said Mohsen Shirzai, an engineer at the plant who was giving us a guided tour.

The tour itself was sanitized and carefully stage managed, but that was not the point.

The Iranians wanted to send a clear message to the international community: They have made a massive leap forward in their plans to develop nuclear technology, their nuclear plant is in its final stages and in a matter of months Iran will be a nuclear energy-powered country, despite efforts by American, Israel and Europe to curb the program.

‘A nuclear Iran’

"The United States should face reality and accept living with a nuclear Iran," said Vice President Gholam Reza Aghazadeh, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran.

Aghazadeh went on to say that Iran has increased the number of centrifuges enriching uranium to 6,000, up from 5,000 in November. The move was in defiance of the U.N. Security Council demands that Iran halt all enrichment activities because it is a key process in the development of a nuclear bomb – as well as nuclear energy.

Meantime, the Russian influence was plain to see everywhere at the plant. Dozens of Russian engineers were milling around the facility, teaching and working. Most of the signs in the plant were either in Persian or Russian. The Russians even had their own camp within the site with accommodations and shops selling Russian produce, an area that was closed off to Iranian personnel.

During a joint press conference with the Russians and the Iranians inside the facility I asked Sergei Kiriyenko, the head of Russia’s state Rosatom Atomic Corporation, how he could be confident that Iran will not develop a nuclear warhead.

But his Iranian counterpart, Aghazadeh, wouldn’t let Kiriyenko answer, saying that he was in a better position to answer that question. In his response, he unsurprisingly towed the government line that Iran has no intention of producing a nuclear warhead.

Point of pride
Signs of progress here at Busher are an enormous source of pride for Iranians. But coupled with Iran launching a satellite into space and reports that it has accumulated large quantities of enriched uranium – they are major causes for concern in the United States and Israel.

Does Iran really have enough uranium to make a nuclear weapon?

One thing is clear – if it doesn't today, it can speed up the process substantially, now that they have mastered these other complicated procedures.

Its not just the Iranians who say that the facility will be used to create power. The IAEA says the same thing. THis is an internationally-monitored light water reactor that can't be used for "nukes" regardless of the false and provocative title of this article. Iran's entire nuclear program started under the Shah, decades ago, with the full assistance and participation of the United States BECAUSE IT MAKES ECONOMIC SENSE. After 6 years of intense inspections and hyped speculation, there is still absolutely NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER of any nuclear weapons program in Iran.
Iran can build a nuke facility in a few years and the U.S. cannot! At one billion Obama can build a few hundred. Now that's an earmark America would agree on! Stop the bail-outs and support America directly.
This project is one that could literally "blow up" in Russia's face!

Way to end the article on a fear-inspiring note. Unbiased reporting for the win.
The great nation of Iran has achieved what it had, for the past thirty years, wanted to achieve: build its own nuclear power plant to procuce energy for peaceful purposes. But it also wants to do that while insisting on others respecting its dignity, including its right to contnue uranium enrichment up to the point where a definitive choice has to be made whether it wants to keep the nuclear weapons option also open, or whether it wants to achieve the ultimate Islamic-philosophy-enjoined honor of wilfully eschewing nuclear weapon development and at the same time using the capability to encourage the existing nuclear powers to implement their disarmament obligations under the International Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty.

The whole international community should send messages of congratulations to Iran and encourage it to pursue the lofty goals that the country's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has set for his country, and pledge to do their part to disarm.

While the incoming new Government in Israel is reportedly contemplating whther it should release Marwan Barghouti in a prisoner exchange deal for Shalit, it could contemplate also doing so. Such a gesture would signal a possible peace-making breakthrough comparable to the release of Nelson Mandela by apartheid-era hardliner Frederick de Klerk in 1991, which ushered in a near-miraculous change of dispensation in South Africa without bloodshed.
I am still amazed that no articles on the Bushehr Nuclear facility mention that construction of this plant was started by the West Germans in 1976.  They had a contract to build two units and the price at that time was $10 billion.  The Germans built a city of 10,000 with 700 pre-fab homes, fully furnished and complete with bidets, hundreds of apts. for German craft people and over 4,000 laborers from all around Iran.  I know because I was there until leaving in Jan. 1979 with a plane load of Germans as all work had effectively stopped due to the revolution.  In fact, I finally decided to go when the Shah announced he was taking a vacation - I knew the end was near.
Fine, If Iran uses it's nuclear plant(s) to make weapons and one get used..  USA & Israel should fire half 70% of their nuclear weapon stock piles at Russia. The country responsible for arming the terrorist in Tehran
I was pretty sure the UN and inspectors told Iran they could not move forward with this operation, yet in the face of defiance they proceed anyways with Russian assistance. What portion or NO did Iran and Russia not understand. Now is time for the U.S. to show them what NO means. As in NO foreign aid, NO food subsides,NO trade. To believe that tey will only use this to generate power is niave. Warheads are just a stones throw away. A bigger problem is we now have a President will want to "talk it out", becuase he has NO stones or sense to call them to the carpet for violating the UN resolution
In the name of peace and tolerance you will allow Iran to arm itself with a nuclear weapon under the guise of peaceful development. They are preparing a political weapon if they are smart or world war 3 if they are stupid.

Do you really want to bet the future of our species on the intelligence of Iranian leadership?
I am no fan of Israel and how it treats its neighbors, although I am extremely fond Jewish people all over the world and their contribution to every facet of life.  But in Iran's case, I sincerely believe that Israel, with explicit or implicit approval from the US, must bomb all the Iranian nuclear facilities since there is no way that the Iranians would listen to the reproach currently being taken by Obama and the three European powers (UK, Germany and France).  Bombing the new Russian built plant as well as the other facilities overtly or covertly is the only solution in my mind.  Benjamin, if you are reading this comment, trust me that is the only way to silence the Iranians from making nuclear chatter. They won't listen to any logic at all.
iran is no threat to the u.s. and has never been one.  even if they do develope a weapon that will only create a balance of power in the middle east with israel offseting iran.  an iranian weapon could be a good thing if it motivates israel to negotiate in good faith with the palestinians.   now israel has no interest or motivation to allow the palestinians a true homeland.
"Nuclear power plant a point of Iranian pride."  Sort of the way a child feels when he finds Daddy's loaded gun?
will someone do something about this before it gets worse, how does the world sit by and watch this happen its only a matter of time before we wipe them off the map or they wipe israel off the map pick and choose.
Russians are smart.  They knew that Iran would eventually build one with or without help.  By Russia helping them they became intimately familiar with the layout, capabilities, and should the need arise they'd be able to disable or destroy it.
I guarantee you some of those "technicians" are Russian operatives paying very close attention to everything in and around the plant, probably planting sophisticated surveillance and monitoring equipment too.  We (U.S.) should be so shrewd.
One can only hope that Iran is doing this to better their nation and to live in peace with the rest of the world .May the higher up have mercy if they do not .
PREPARE FOR THE NUCLEAR WINTER
Iran will get everything it wants sooner or later.  Probably because of Russia technology and Oil money from the entire world including the U.S.  At that point the world will become a powder keg just waiting to explode.  Eventualy it will kill millions of innocent people.  Im so sorry to write this
looks about time for a pre-emptive strike....
oh wait i forgot the demecrates are in office
It would seem that nothing else has made any impact what-so-ever on Iranian nuclear intentions. Perhaps the best course of action, at this point, would be inform the Iranians that we accept their statement that "they have no intention of building a nuclear bomb/warhead -- and make it clear that we will immediately distroy anything that even remotely resembles a bomb/missile deployed in the future.
I know I'll get slack for this, but I salute the Iranians. Although an oil producing nation, they are forward thinking enough to see that clean energy IS the future. No one stops or questions the U.S. when we build nuclear power plants, who are we to stop them... we should have offerred our help years ago, then we could have been on the 'inside' of things, watching and regulating, instead of speculating.
Now... with that said...
Iran has made it clear that they DO have nuclear intentions, and their President is not to be trusted with this knowledge. We do still need to continue to insure that Iran is NOT in persuit of nuclear arms technology (probably too late already...) But again, who are we to say they cannot persue that technology? Who stopped us? The Russians? The Israeli's? The Pakistani's?
I think they are trying to advance as far as the UNITED STATES ARE in the field.IT"s a free world.IF we can they can also
I believe the relationship between the US and Iran is the sole driving force behind all attempts at blocking their way to nuclear capability.

Other states, more dangerous, have atomic weapons, and that includes Israel. I doubt very seriously that the Iranians dont' realize that if they were to develop nuclear weapons, that their use by them would surely bring the destruction of their target, followed quickly by the destruction of Iran.  They are not fools.  If they can develop atomic energy for peaceful purposes, so be it, I doubt that the Russians want in any way or form to be linked to the destruction of another state by means they provided. They are also not fools.

Unfortunately, or fortunately as you may see it, The US has lost much if not all of the cache it developed after WWII in strongly influencing other states, and that is a rub for us here in the US. But some of us realize that in order for the world to be more peaceful, everyone needs a piece of the pie, everyone.

We can't keep it all anymore, nor should we.
In 1978 the Shiite radicals over through the Shaw of Iran and to this day the militant government continues to deceive the world as a peaceful nation.
Iran hates the United States and Israel they hide behind a mask of deception as they deliver bombs to the Telliban and Hamas wile thousands of US soldiers die in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Allowing Iran and North Korea to become a nuclear nation puts the entire world at risk of nuclear war.
may God help us.
The world should just quit agonizing over Iran's nuclear program.  Let hem have their nuclear power.  If there is ever a nuclear attack any where in the world, Iran should be the first target for retaliation because of their insistence on becoming a nuclear power.  This statement should enough to give them food for thought.
Its just a matter of time before some Islamic nation obtains and uses or sells a nuke to a terrorist organization.  The count down has started to a Nuclear strike on US soil.
Iran will be a threat eventually. Its just a matter of time. As usual, the west will wait until the crisis turns hot and there won't be room to negotiate. The Russian's are making this happen.
I see no reason why the US or any other country should, would or does object to Iran or any other country that wish to develope nucerler engery for peaceful purpose.  We should encourage it.

But how is any one to not think that the purpose is not for peaceful purpose when you secretly develope nucerlar energy or boast your ability to lauch missles or exclaim your desire to destroy another nation. Or continue to support and supply terrorist.

When a nation can change all that and sit down and engage in discussion then violence just might be a thing of the past.
The Iranians have proven they will not be silence and that energy independence is paramount.  YES, Nuclear energy, just as green energy to America is the safe way forward.  Yes, the Iranians have mastered and harnest the atom.  It is time we move forward in peace.  The Israelis seem to have learned nothing from Hitler and his Nazi Germans.  The Israelis allowed Bush to go to Israel and compare Obama to Hitler, if I were Pres O, the Israelis would have to show a genuine maturity to ensure peace or go it alone.  This economic choas will allow America to refocus on what matters and that is America, no desire for Empire, just harmony!  CHANGE is beautiful!
Of course they're going to develop a warhead.  It's the ultimate symbol of power.  Iranians, like most nationalistic people, are all about showing how strong they can be.  It's especially acute with the Persians and Arabs because they've been a foot stool for so long.  This, (in their collective mind) says; "hey look at me!  I'm a big boy (no pun intended) now too!"  Funny thing is, they act with such national pride on something that they had to pay the Russians to do for them.  Typical rich kid.
Bush should have destroyed it before he left office. Now that the panty waists are in charge there is no hope of US intervention because nobody here has the mettle to do it. I hope that Israel takes it out.
You are witnessing the first steps toward a nuclear war in the middle east which will also include parts of Europe at some point.
Isn't it amazing, our elected officials that were voted into office to serve and protect us, well, obviously from the banking and housing disasters which appears to be a considerable oversight. Maybe we should stop meddling into everyone's else's business and spend more time cleaning out our own closet!

Rob, (Response to Rob's Comment above)
In that case what do you think Russians will do with their 100% nukes? Any Ideas about destination for Russian Nukes???

Why not.Just because we lack in nuclear power plants, does not give us the right to limit any one else. The French lead the world in nuclear power production.Seems to me more bending to the Isreali fear at our cost.syndrome. Let them do as they wish inside there own borders. And if they are building a bomb to blow up the middle east go right ahead I won't miss it
hmmmmmmmmmmm
Did you American ANIMALS FIND THE WMD'S IN IRAQ YET, MAYBE BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO DESTROY ANOTHER COUNTRY AGAIN MAYBE YOU CAN SHOW US PROOF THEY HAVE WEAPONS FIRST,,,,,,,,,,,,, ISREAL HAS WEAPONS AND THEY START WARS WITH THEIR NEIGHBORS ALL THE TIME, BUT THAT IS OKAY, AMERICANS ARE WAR MONGOLS JUST LIKE ISREAL!!
Iran is not looking for clean energy, they are looking for nuclear bomb to drop on isreal. How anyone cant see that is mind boggling.Wake up!!!
This whole issue reminds me of the Cuban Missle Crisis.  The nuclear power plant in Iran is only a cover to put nukes in the back yard of the U.S.  Although controlled by Iran, this is a way to have Russian influence in the middle east.
There is nothing we can do now about Iran having anything thing nuclear. They clearly have it already, its time move on. They SHOULD be allowed to have nuke power but they LIE......ALOT.So we cant trust them with that kind of power. I have a couple of friends from Iran and even they agree with me.They wont strike the U.S. with a nuke ,but Isreal is pretty much screwed. One more thing, we built the bomb than the power plant so they probably did too.
The naivete displayed in this thread is disheartening.  Does anyone truly believe the possibility of nuclear retaliation will deter a people that would simply perceive this as martyrdom on a huge scale?  When the theocracy of Iran builds a nuclear device they will use it as they please, regardless of any possible consequences.
Why can't Iran have nuclear weapons when every major nation seems to have plenty in their backyard? Why should there be much controversies over weapons? There are plenty of weapons around the world that is being sold by the major superpower-- US, China, Russia???
Why Israel, U.S. and other country's have the right to have nukes while Iran and other country's not.  If the U.S. does not allow Iran to have nuke, then they should eliminate the nuke from Israel and U.S. and work on dismantling of carrying such weapon.  Israel and U.S. have much more that other countries of illegal weapon's that uses it against people.
Well, first I guess we should welcome Iran to the nuclear community and once again explain the rules of owning nuclear weapons.  That would mean that if you are responsible in any way for attacks in another country; that country has the option of using nuclear weapons in retaliation even to prevent a strike.  This means that once Isreal has intel proving Iran has a weapon, they can legally attack with nuclear options.

But I am sure they won't, history has proven that Isreal would NEVER attack another country that agressively to preserve itself.  What was I thinking?
Are we really that willing to put a blind fold on ourselves and congratulate Iran for building a nuclear facility.  We are talking about a totalitarian dictatorship, who by the way has on many occasions mentioned that the total destruction of an entire nation should be done.  Are we forgetting this.  I am not opposed to the IRANIAN people having the wonderful blessing of a nuclear power plant.  Its clean, energy efficient, and truly a great step forward in modernizing that country.  But I would not allow it until the country disposed of that absolute evil and untrusting ruler they call Ajmadinajerk.  Get rid of him and then we can talk nuclear, but that kind of power in the hands of a blood thirsty satanic idiot should not be tolerated.  I am completely surprised that Israel has not attacked the site already, since they are the only ones who seem to realize the gravity of the situation and that have the balls to see it for what it is.  A step forward in building a nuclear weapon.
It's really sickening how so many people can get so paranoid and irrational when a country develops a nuclear powerplant. Shows the power of propaganda and fearmongering. Isn't anyone afraid that the lunatics running israel have about 300 nuclear BOMBS??!!
Rob half is 50% not 70% and you do admit that Israel has atomic weapons. Thats not good.
Well done IRAN. And Iran has a full righ to make atomic bomb.
