Arab world still looking for ‘change’

CAIRO – President Barack Obama's first week in office has been filled with words and deeds calculated to restore America’s image in the Arab and Muslim world, gestures that some of this region’s leading media figures believe are already changing the way people think about the United States.

"You can't believe the change," said Gamal Abdel Gawad, a senior political analyst in Cairo. "People are beginning to entertain the idea of the U.S. as a force of good, not evil."

But other Arab and Muslim reporters and editors gathered in Cairo to hear from President Obama’s Mideast envoy remain skeptical.

"Where is the policy? Is it just words?" asked Kareem Fathi, a correspondent for Kuwait TV.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, right, meets with U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell in Cairo on Wednesday.

Beginning with his inauguration promise to seek "a new way forward" with the Muslim world based on "mutual respect," Obama has made headlines across the region by announcing the closure of the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, making his first official telephone call as president to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, sending his Middle East envoy George Mitchell to the region (whose Irish-Lebanese parentage has been duly noted by many), and granting his first television interview to the Arab satellite network al-Arabiya.

"[Obama's] approach was extraordinary because of his choice," said Randa Abul Azam, Al- Arabiya’s Cairo Bureau Chief.  "He corrected eight years of Bush during which Arabs and Muslims felt portrayed as terrorists. He is trying to mend that mistake. The distinction has been made and is felt and appreciated."

'U.S. policy must change'
Obama’s Mideast envoy Mitchell is on a tour of the region this week. He was in Cairo on Wednesday to meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, before continuing on to Israel, and I took advantage of the opportunity to ask some of the reporters and editors waiting for him about their expectations for the new administration.

Most seem to agree with Azam and Gawad that President Obama already has helped thaw relations, but many doubt that his charm offensive, however sincere, will translate into new policies toward the Palestinian-Israeli problem and other vexing issues like Iraq.

"The most important thing is there will be no change in U.S. policy, only a change in the image of the U.S.," said Arab News Network reporter Yasser Gawara. "George Mitchell succeeded in Northern Ireland, but before he does anything, the U.S. policy must change."

"It was a good thing [Obama] mentioned Muslims, but will words be enough without any acts?  He appointed George Mitchell, which is a good thing, but he also appointed Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, and we know she is in solidarity with Israel," Fathi, the Kuwait TV correspondent, said.

Others contend that Obama's decision to hit the ground running in the Middle East indicates that he sees Palestinian-Israeli peace as essential to regional stability and U.S. interests.

"All those [actions] indicate that he is interested, really interested in doing something different in the Middle East, that the Middle East is high on the priorities of the U.S. President," concluded the political analyst Gawad.

"We have good, positive indications from his inaugural speech, his appointment of George Mitchell and his interview with Arabiya," said Abul Azam (who works for the network). "But the hurt is so much. Iraq is still occupied. Palestine and Gaza are as we see. People need to see real change on the ground."

Suzy el Geneidy, a veteran political reporter for the Egyptian political magazine Al Ahram Al Arabi, is willing to give Obama a chance.

"[Obama] does not think Muslims are bad or evil ...His statements give us more reason to be optimistic. He wants to reach out and have a dialogue," she said. "His policy might not change 100 percent, but maybe there is an ability to listen more, a possibility of minor changes."

The Arab-Muslim narrative is one of unending victimization by "others," the others being the West, Christians, Jews and Israel. They have complaints about 19th century European colonization, and with some validity, but they gloss over Turkish imperialism in southeast Europe that lasted centures and reached as far as Vienna; not to mention the near conquest of Europe in earlier centuries. Muslim memories are very selective.Istanbul was once a Greek city - but it was conquered and ethnically cleansed by Muslim Turks - mosques were built where churches once stood or outright threw Christians out of their own churches and cathedrals - if it were the other way around, the grudges, hatred and warfare would have been unending. We know that the Crusades were an aggressive act by Europe, in the name of religion, against Muslims, but that's why we call that period the "Dark Ages." We grew up - what are they waiting for - another 1000 years?  There is ethnic cleansing of Christians and whatever remain of Jews throughout Muslim controlled lands, without a peep from the press, the UN or others - and it is happening now in the 21st Century. Slavery, child slavery, sanctioned mistreatment of women, gays and minorities - on and on - are all features of life throughout much of the Muslim world. Muslim immigrants in Europe and America know well the language of civil rights in demanding their place in the sun in predominantly Christian societies, and so they should - with the right to practice their religion and build mosques guaranteed - I support that, but in lands where they are the majority, no such rights are granted to others. You can get killed for having a bible in Saudi Arabia.

We are insensitive if we fail to grant them rights here, we are insensitive if we demand similar rights in Muslim lands, we are insensitive if we are offended by a grotesque pattern of Jihad-inspired terrorism, we are insensitive if we or others defend ourselves against terrorism, we are insensitive if we want to continue living as Western societies, according to our values. Oh well.
We just don't care -- the various factions in the middle east have never been able to see each other as a fellow human beings -- they just refuse to get along -- the rest of us look--we see but you what we have our own life issues to deal with -- we just don't care if you blow each other up -- just leave the rest of us out of it.
If the Arab world is looking for "respect" from the Western world especially the US it must be able to evaluate it's own short commings, hypocrisy, failures, and Mid-evil world view. The vast majority of Arab world for too long has lived in the 12th century, tribal and sectarian and suspicious of enlightenment. It must recogonize that it has to participate on a level equal to other Western and democratic societies.  It has to stop looking backward and begin to look forward. The Isreal-Palestinian conflict  is but a symptom of their world view.  President Obama may reach out but the Arabs have to go half way too.
The only change that needs to take place is in the hearts and minds of the Arab people. They have supported inhumane terrorism with total support. If Arabs want change, look  in a mirror and get to work. Teach your children how to build and not how to kill and destroy. The sooner peple admit the truth, the sooner we will have peace.
How about a little "change" from the Muslim world? Like Egypt blocking the tunnels into Gaza from the Egyptian side, or like Iran stopping shipment of arms to terrorists, or like Pakistan not eliminating the terrorists living openly in western Pakistan. Funny thing that the USA is always expected to change and we are not the one's intentionally killing innocents.
The guy has been in office a little over a week,,,,, I think this mess that is in the Arab world has been going on more than that! The leaders of these countries want to see change, So why don't they start doing it??????
So an attack on America is in no way Bush's fault on his watch, but if another happens on Obama's watch it will be completely him to blame? Silly ignorant NeoCons! Americans, don't continue to buy into all this Al Queda and terrorism nonsense, wake up people! Educate yourselves instead. Our two party system in America is a complete hoax and a big joke on us, the common citizens. It doesn't promote change, it stifles change. Both aprties serve the same masters ultimately, but most modern Neo Con Republicans are un-informed and ill-informed gullible idiots feeding on a steady diet of mostly Fox News!

Until the Arab Muslims and non arab Muslims stand up and denounce the fanatics of their religion I will not respect nor support the Arabs
Its funny how politicians who can't even succesfully negotiate with the Auto workers Unions, suddenly think they can negotiate with the Arab world. These fanatics do not acknowledge that Israel has any right to exist and demand its utter destruction. This is not negotiable to them. Unless we join them in driving the Jews into the sea and all convert to Islam they will always hate and want to destroy us. Negotiations in that region have been going on all my life to no effect, in fact its got worse. All a shift to the left in government means is that again a fortune in taxpayers money will go into temporary platitudes (bribes) which they will take with one hand while stabbing us in the back with the other. Obama probably thinks he can stop dogs chasing cats as well. The naivity of this administration puts us all in danger and is what will bring about 9/11 II. Concentrate your efforts on securing our borders and our country, that's what will keep us safe. We also need to harvest our Oil resources here as part of an energy independence program so we are not sending trillions of dollars to those who seek to destroy us. Nice people always think everything can be solved by negotiation, they just can't understand the concept that some not everyone is as nice as them and some are just downright evil. As George Orwell said  “We sleep safely in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm”. In the modern world we find this an uncomfortable fact. I'm not against diplomacy at all but just as when you are cornered by the drunk who won't go home until he's got in a fight, a time comes where the talk ends and you either have to defend yourself or take what ever he decides to dish out.
Before we change the world we should fix our country. These countries don't want us there. Why do we need to fix the world? Let them fix themselves and they might not dislike so much. Let them fight for there own believes and then we won't have to take the heat on everything that happens. We need to concentrate on our own country we have to many of our own problems.
Why does everyone think that Israel is a state puppet of the US? They are a country of their own! It is not up to the US to change Israel. It is up to the two sides to come to a mutual agreement for peace. We want to facillitate that for sure and a two state or whatever they decide is the best for them is for them to decide.  This is not a proxy war by America on Palestinians! Average everyday Americans could care less to be honest with you. We just want the killing bloodshed and uncertainty of war to stop decimating people's lives and allow both parties(countries/states) to prosper in peace. We will however come to aid of our allies in wars against their peoples much like we did for our Arab allies against Iraq in the first Gulf War. It was not a Muslim jihad but a land grab by a dictator over a sovereign country.
Radical Islamic terrorism has got to be stopped by the very neighbors who live beside those who would annihilate others because of religious intolerance. My question to the jihadists is "How has it worked for you so far?" Is your religion stronger, your faith stronger, your countries and people healthier and able to eat and live well. See their children smile. I doubt it... Hate breeds more hate and contempt brings more misery. Look to your own religion for inspiration to find peace not martyrdom! and
I have hope in Obama, he will not be giving Israel carte blanche on killing sprees like we saw with Bush and Condi Rice. "Shirin Chiha, Austin,TX"

carte blache to kill?  i noticed that you failed to bring up the fact that hamas had been lobby bombs into isreal for 6 years.  take off your blinders.  how long would you allow bombs to reign in on austin from mexico before you demanded that the u.s. government did something to stop it!!!  think before you show your ignorance by taking the side of the SCARED RAT BASTARDS that hide among innocent people for shields, then complain that the civilians are being killed.
Alot of Americans still do not get it.
The image of America to the to the mideast is one
of aragance, gluttony and greed. Having a party to swear in the new president at a cost of 150 million, while people are starving in the middle east, will not go far to change peoples' minds. And the fact that Obama himself went out and raised the money says alot about his true nature.
This Islam religion is nothing but a joke.  It is supposed to be a religion of love and here they are teaching young kids in schools how to be suicide bombers and to kill the infidels.  Guess what, many Arabs have come to the United States and have become citizens which now makes them infidels also so when these terrorist come to the United States to kill infidels, they will be killing many of their own people.  Theirs is a sick society and they need to make change to stop all this killing before they look to us to make change.
Mention any prospect for peace in the ME and the Israeli propaganda machine goes into attack mode bashing the Arab world. If truth be told what Israel has been doing in Palestine for 60 years we would be calling for immediate sanctions and a regime change in Israel. We have been fooled into complacency and made to look the other way while Israel conducted genocide, ethnic cleansing, torture and wholesale stealing of others lands. US has been fooled no thanks to the Israeli lobby lie machine.
There are desperate people and terrorists in ME and we have been fooled into believing who the real victim was in ME. Thanks to 60 minutes (abc.com) truth is finally coming out. More of us in the US will see what a ruthless serial killer and a thief we have been backing in the ME.
It's time we start treating people with respect and find an honorable solution. Create a free Palestine and stop backing tyrants and we won't need to go bankrupt building fences and new killing machines.
If one checks the details, Bush started quite friendly with the Arabs. "Paying" with IL security and independence was part of the *deal*.

History suggests that this didn't help the 9/11 victims.
some of your respondends are true and entrenched anti-semitic haters, both of jews and/or arabs.....i wish the Prez success in all that he does. anyone with an ounce of common sense knows the Prez inherited a mess both in the U S A and internationally. let us, as citizens of this great experiment, Democracy, stand with the Prez and pray for him and his staff. their success means a better life for all. isn't that what its all about?????
It would be wise for people to sit back and let time take its course. We're spectators in essence, because we have no power to make him decide one way or another on how to deal with anything he's facing. It's only natural for everyone to have an opinion about things that is to be expected. The fact that people continually criticize the man after ONE week in office is ridiculous at best. I wonder if these same individuals who are quick to criticize Mr. Obama so early on were as quick to criticize George Bush about any obvious mistakes, lies, and F-ups he had. It's possible that they weren't....LOL Be honest with yourself and ask these questions: 1.) Am I being so critical because of his identity? Secondly, 2.)Am I being so critical because of his party affiliations? If so, it's time to realize that it's not fair to criticize someone for taking a first or second step towards progress in any particular area. If you honestly answered yes to question 1 then sit back and have your I knew this N!66@R shouldn't have been elected moment IF and when the time comes(which I'm sure lots of people are waiting to have). If you honestly answered yes to question 2, then pursue politics and try to do something to make a change yourself. Until then, be glad you don't have a president ready to go to war at the drop of a dime and risk destroying foreign relations (anyone ever heard of a guy named George Bush?)

Absolutely correct - the Arabs are asserting "Where is the change in ploicy - only words" - I ask where is the change in your own culture - stand-up and denounce the fanatics that commit the crimes and atrocities to humanity in the name of Allah, Islam and the Muslim world.  Acid thrown in the face of girls seeking an education, lives of innocent victims taken randomly by suicide bombers, actions provoked by religious leaders.  The Arab world needs to police itself and stand up against the portion of their own culture that can no longer be accepted or tolerated. But an end to the radical extremists, Taliban and any other subcultures professing the destruction of everything other than their own belief's.
For many Arabs and Muslims, the mear existence of the US is a major issue.

The US support of IL is an easy attack point becuase it sounds so easy to address.
Take note: it is the US values that tick Arab leaders, e.g. freedome.
Very refreshing to read some intelligent views on this matter. I believe the Muslim Arab world does have the burden of changing its outlook of Israel and its right to exist. The reality is that Obama will not change the relationship that America has with Israel which is the core issue. The moderate Arab world needs to come to grips with this reality and when it accepts this entirely the fanatical elements within the Muslim world will no longer have the backing or support to inflict terror in a world wants peace. Each person needs to stand up for what is right and just, then and only then will there be a peaceful coexistence. The words Obama speaks are the same words we have heard for decades. Its time the parties involved hear those words and take action as they are the only ones that can make the changes needed.
In the Middle East there are lots of problems, the least of which is human rights. Nothing is going to change in the Muslim World.  We may change with our policies. The problem is do you come accross as weak
or strong.  Did George Bush change anything? No.  He
directed anger against us.  Anger that would have been
directed somewhere else, but would have existed nonetheless.  When we leave Iraq, where will the terrorist go?  People don't seem to care as long as they go somewhere else.  I would rather be a lightning rod for them where we can protect ourselves
rather than have them attack against people that aren't protected including US.  People think the US
is the problem and are the ones that need to change.
We aren't the ones that need to change.  We have a
democracy where people are essentially free. Obama and
all of his supporters are going to learn the hard way
that we are where we are, not because we chose this path, but because we had no choice.  Until we went to
Afghanistan, terrorists could perform their acts
and go home and be protected.  No other country
has our best interests in mind.  When they cheer what we are doing, we might want to look at it.
Let's see what Obama will do to Israel. Many are like Slaves to Israel like our X-President(Bush) he did what he can till the last day in Office and didn't dare to stop Israel in GAZA they destroyed GAZA and life of poor people and Mock on Palestinians and Blaming Hamas for the destruction. But he didn't speak a single word to Israel.
Muslims only believe in Obama when he put all the Israel Generals as WAR-Criminals.
Why doesn't anyone realize that maybe if U.S. would stop sticking their noses into everyone's business including the Arab and Muslim world then maybe perhaps The Arab and Muslim world would change.  How would u feel if someone came to your home and decidedn to control your life, steal your home, or harass u and even kill u.  Why can't anyone try to be objective here and see that the U.S. and Israel aren't any better.  Besides look at how bad we are doing in the U.S. with this horrible economy including crime rates rising, all because we send all of our money else where.
So, we must change, is that correct? OK, and how about them - when do they stop trying to destroy Israel and crying fool each time Israel doesn't let them - that is, all these decades since 1948? Terrorist attacks all over the world? Killing and storming embassies when someone says something they disagree with? At least stop killing each other? The only change they'd ever accept from us is doing and saying nothing disregard whatever they do - and that's what Sep 11 was all about (that is, to "change" us).
And the consensus.... both the Arabs, the Muslims, the West, the East, Christians and Jews must change and learn to live in peace.

But it is a culture thing.   It will be hard unless you educate the people to a new idea.    Who will do it ?
Are you people stupid? Disarm Isreal...Tell them not to retaliate against those who attack them... If you think that then you are a Moron. What would you do if it was your family being rocketed by a country who wanted your erradication?

Tell you what; next time you are attacked lay there and die. That is what you are telling Israel to do...
