Londoners celebrate Obama's inauguration

LONDON – The morning after Barack Obama's election triumph, the front-page headline in Britain's Metro newspaper read: "The Day America Became a Little Bit Cool Again."

As Obama was sworn-in as president 3,600 miles away today, there were few signs of such widespread ardor waning in London.

Morning newspapers vied for the best coverage of an event that hadn’t even occurred yet with The Independent devoting no fewer than 23 pages to the looming inauguration. Tuesday’s Guardian came complete with a section featuring Obama’s "finest" speeches.

How Obama could – or couldn’t – change the world was practically the only topic being discussed on Britain’s talk-radio stations, while the BBC devoted much of the day to events in D.C.

Packed pubs
But in a society where many people don't need an excuse to enjoy a pint, the sheer number of pubs showcasing a uniquely American piece of political theater was perhaps the best illustration of how Obama has captured the imagination of many Britons.

It was anything but business as usual at the Texas Embassy Cantina, near Trafalgar Square. The American-themed bar-restaurant was packed with hundreds of loud, passionate revelers, including many Britons who'd fled work early to witness history on big screens.

Victoria Scott, 29, may be a supporter of the U.K.’s right-leaning Conservative party but she wasn’t unhappy at the thought of George W. Bush leaving the White House.

"I can’t help but think of the phrase, ‘Things can only get better,’" she said. "If Obama does half of what people think he’s going to do it’ll be fantastic.

Video: Britons cheer Obama and ask, 'Could this happen here?"

"He’s certainly going to be better than the last one. Apart from the wars and Guantanamo Bay, I could never get behind anyone who mangles the English language like Bush did."

Wende Guastamachio, 54, formerly a California-based lawyer, was dressed to the nines in preparation for an inaugural ball and vowed her night would involve "eight years of deferred partying."

"This is just a celebration of so much," she said. "Being in London, I finally get to feel good about being American. British people used to say to me, ‘You’re okay but your president is an idiot.’"

SLIDESHOW: Worldwide celebrations for Obama's inauguration
Whitney Calvert, 24, who is originally from Peoria, Ill., likened watching Obama’s speech to key moments in U.S. history.

"Being abroad you see it’s not just the U.S. excited about a change," she said. "It surprised me how much about the election was on television over here and all day long there’s been stuff on the inauguration on the BBC.

"I’m not sure whether people would be as excited if they weren’t so upset about the previous administration and the things that happened. A lot of Europeans hate Bush."

Dance studies student Emma Betsy, 21, from Northampton, admitted she never imagined the U.S. would elect an African-American president in her lifetime. But she added, "He’s only one man, he can’t change the world. Change is not going to happen overnight."

‘Hope he can live up to expectations’

At the Sir Paul Pindar pub on the edge of London’s City financial district, dozens of business-suit-clad workers gathered in reverential silence around screens usually reserved for soccer matches.

When the sound of a ringing cell phone broke their spell, dirty looks were shot at the Blackberry’s suddenly sheepish owner. Applause rang out across the bar as Obama finished by simply stating "God bless the United States of America."

Carroll Carter, Jr., head of sales for a financial technology firm, was among those mesmerized by Obama’s words. "If you argue there’s only one superpower left, he’s a man who’s representing the world," he said. "Obama’s set the bar high, now he’s got to jump over it. We have to pull together as a world. The challenges are not just American challenges but global challenges."

Nigerian-born Viviennisi Adeboye, a 28-year-old IT professional, described Obama’s speech as "a captivating and emotional moment." She added, "America believes so much in him and Obama believes in them. I hope he can live up to expectations."

‘American beer, pretzels and cheerleaders’
Elsewhere, some normally free London venues were seeking $25 cover charges as they hosted inauguration parties targeting both British fans and the 250,000 expatriate Americans who reside in the U.K.

The Tricycle Theatre in the traditionally Irish Kilburn area of the capital promised "American beer, pretzels and cheerleaders" as it broadcast the inauguration on a full-sized cinema screen to a sell-out crowd.

Democrats Abroad U.K. was hosting a $150-per-head inaugural ball at the ritzy Royal Lancaster Hotel. The group was also holding a luau party – complete with limbo contest – about 50 miles away in Cambridge.

And Madame Tussauds' wax museum, which last week added an Obama figure to its collection which already boasts icons like Elvis Presley, Tom Cruise, David Beckham and Ronald Reagan, was allowing anyone with an American passport to dodge the usual $36 entry fee.

Even the bookmakers got in on the action, taking bets on what color Obama’s tie would be as well as whether words and phrases including "John McCain," "Hillary Clinton," "credit crunch" and "Britain" would feature in his speech.

History has been written and I wish Barack all the best. He has the potential of being one of the greatest president we have ever had.
thank

THANK GOD WE NOW HAVE A PRESIDENT THAT THE WORLD
WILL LOOK AT WITH HOPE. THAT WE WILL BECOME A MORAL
COUNTRY.

I'm really glad to see that people all over the world are sharing our excitement about the change that Obama reprsents to our country and in many aspects to the world.  One of the reason I voted for him was because I think he will help our image through out the world.  I'm tired of our country being portrayed as bulles.  Obama reflects the mind set of the majority of the people in the United States and it is time the world startes to see what we are really all about.
When is England going to elect their first black Prime Minister? It's time for them to be "Cool" again. England is much too "Stuffy" except on New Years Eve when they all lay out in the street drunk!
Godspeed Mr. President!!! Bon Chance!!! Buena Suerte, Felicitaciones y Bendiciones to you and your family!
Wow, as a cockney kid born in the Old Kent Road, home of the pearly kings and queens, right now I am proud of my heritage, the Brits always stand behind us.
But most of all I am proud to be an American.  No double names for me I have never really understood the African/American; Italian/American, some other nationality/American,  etc. etc.  Why can't we just be Americans or is there a big problem with that.
There are no comments yet because we are all still savoring the moment.  Thanks MSNBC for giving those of us who had to work today a way to view history live via your website and thanks for your truly fair and balanced reporting!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have seen several Presidents sworn in and I have to say that this one actually made me cry. Not because he is the first Black President, but because WE have a long hard road ahead of us as a country and a world and I beleive that HE is the one to help us get back on track.

It is hard for me to say it, But I am glad to see him in the Oval Office and not Hillary. (even thou I know she would have done a great job) He has a long, long road to walk and WE need to help him if he stumbles.

I know that I will be there to help....Will You?
It's nice to see that the rest of the world is looking towards us as friends.  I only hope that our Nation will continue to embrace our new President as the rest of the world evidently has.  I'm looking forward to the next four years.
The fact that Obama is African-American is not the reason I voted for our new President.  He's smart, he's so cool, and just looking at him inspires me and calms my fears about our economic meltdown.  You GO Obama, and make our country great again!
As an American I appreciate the attention our friends across the pond are paying to our elections and Obama's inauguration - but I do think their attention and the amount of opinion imparted is a bit excessive at times.  Here in the US we're glad to see the UK hold successful elections and transition from one Party to the next peacefully.  It seems to me most Americans wish leaders in the UK and their respective constituents the best regardless of whether we agree with that leader or not.  As someone who has divided his time between the UK and the US I hope someday our friends in the UK will understand that we appreciate their interest and hope to continue having a good relationship with them - but comments like Ms. Virginia Scott's are misplaced and erroneously self-legitimize a sense she and others like her might have that Americans vote with a need and desire to be vindicated by them.  I'm a Republican - I voted for Bush in 2000 and 2004 but in this election did not vote for the Republican nominee.  Whether my President is a Democrat or a Republican, and their Prime Minister is Tory, Liberal Democrat, or Labour, at the end of the day the more civilized, diplomatic, and higher road is the one taken by those who are respectful of each other.  It's a type of class and manner - etiquette - that Former President George W. Bush has but some of our British friends mentioned and quoted in this article lack. The vast majority of my British friends are oustanding and well-mannered folks - these are exceptions, of course... but it would be great if more British people were as interested in their own elections as they are in ours!
It is astounding for me to see that with this one man, hope is again attainable.  I believe he can change the world.
The Only way our new President will succeed in implementing programs to get our economy back on track, is if All Americans understand that sacrifice lies ahead, and All of us (middel class) must work harder for less compensation.  Either we're all in this together, or our situation will not change for a decade......not the next two or four years you hear in the medial.
Just remember: President Bush inherited the problems that Clinton left for him, and had to try to fix them.  And the entire world, including every American, demanded that America go after the terrorists who attacked the World Trade Center.  President Bush did that, but apparently not quickly enough to suit some people.  And he has kept our troops there because he felt that our work of restoring democracy and basic human rights was not done yet.

Obama may have high hopes for our nation, but I fear that his plans will have too high a cost, and the people of America will be completely blindsided by it.  Remember that he is very inexperienced when it comes to the political arena, and this inexperience may come back to bite him in the butt.  Right now, he seems to be trying to please conservatives and liberals alike, and it just cannot continue, because their goals are such complete opposites.

I am not saying that President Bush didn't make mistakes, because he did.  He's human.  And I am not saying that Obama will not make mistakes, because he will.  He's human.  But I don't believe that President Bush was the incompetent that mainstream media wants to portray him as, nor do I believe that Obama is the savior that many people believe him to be.  I pray that God will watch over him, and our nation, as we go forward from this day.
As the decendent of the African slaves, born in guyana and now a citizen of Australia. Today means so much for me and my family i watch everything and cried and cheered loudly to see the end of the Bush and the Past policies. I hope Mr Obama will be giving the chance to do his job over the next four years. But for today just enjoy what he has achieved today for black, whites, asian, indian and all the aboriginal peoples of the world. to quote maya angelou " I am the Hopes and the Dreams of the African slaves, I rise, I rise, I rise. Amercia RISE and take a bow.
As an American and a Vietnam Era Veteran. I wish our new President well. There are so many problems, veterans benefits being one of them. But, I do believe he can get it done, because if all of us dont pull together and learn to love one another as human beings we are finished as a society. If we do not and let this moment in time slip away, years later the history books will place us among the Roman Empire once great but now decadant and forgotten. God bless not only America, God Bless the world!
I know there must have been tears in the eyes of some Britons when they heard Aretha Franklin sing "America" and harken to the fact that there is such commonality among our two peoples, including common race issues arising from empire.  Yes, a Briton may well empathize that the Anglo-Saxon community has come a long way with the inauguration of the first black to high leadership office in the Western World.
"America believes so much in him and Obama believes in them."

What a great observation from afar. And she's right on both counts. I had never thought of the fact that President Obama does believe in us, and that's why he's telling us straight-up that it's going to be a long, tough road to a better world--he knows we can help him fix things. It's his duty to lead, and ours to follow--as long as it's the right path. Never again should we allow ourselves to be led as seriously astray as we let Bush/Cheney take us.

Cheers, Britain! Thanks for the vote of confidence.
To listen to the idiots in this article, I now know there is no intelligent life left on this planet.......and certainly not on a worthless island that would be part of Germany right now had we not sacrificed thousands of our lives to save in WWII when England was no match for the nazis.

Just for one minute stop and read the quotes above.  do they really sound grounded or intelligent?  Exactly what did Bush do to "butcher the English language"?  Geez, have you not listened to obama?  Worse, yet, have you not listened to obama's lies day after day in the campaign.  If his lips are moving, he's lying.........and plotting the complete removal of all freedom.  Of course, you brits would no little about the concept of freedom, having traded free markets and your guns for socialism and billy clubs long ago.  Look where there has gotten you.  Enjoy your poverty and stay on your side of the pond.
For you non-Americans who have been wondering for the last 8 years how it could ever come to pass that Bush won about half of the total vote in two successive elections, just read and think carefully about Peter's post.
We are a nation of many things--contradictions, ideologies, excellence, and, yes, rank ignorance.
I think the joy of seeing Obama elected has to be
tempered with the joy of seeing G.W. Bush and his
neocoms leave office. After eight years of one screw
up after another and a Republican congress that gave Bush every spending bill he requested the Republicans are now questioning Obama's stimulus proposal as being
too costly. What hypocrits! Obama will find that Republicans will do all they can to sidetrack his proposals looking ahead to 2012 and the possibility of "4 more years". I am 77 years young and have'nt felt this juiced about a Pres. since Kennedy. He has
my prayers and support. What can I do to help this
country come back? Lead us Obama.
I am happy to be an USA Ameican citizen with a new President that can and must get us back on the right tracks we have been off of them for 8 yrs its is time lets support and back our new President
dear president, good luck for step forword to prove your self as achange.you are not only president of united
states of  america but whole world connected with you as agreat world leader.respected president you never forget government is for,by,and of  the people.i have faith in god andfeeling in heart you never forget your promises. we are with you.
Please, please, please, please, please...No one respond to Peter.  Let him have his opinions and do not give him the attention that he craves!!!
Is the party over yet? Let's get down to business.

Obamerica you now have to live up to your promises. We (the global we) need an end to wars, corporate greed, financial meltdown, environmental destruction and military agression.

We need you to empower us as a planet to make these changes. Are you up to the task? Or is this just the typical hype and distraction that your nation does oh so well.

Obamerica you have the chance to be great again. Please learn from your old mistakes. The world is counting on it.
Man oh man.  I do wish him success.  You can't make anything better without people believing in their leadership.

The problem that I see, having a degree in political science and practiced politics my adult life, is that we may all be setting him up so high...with such high expectations, that there is no way he can meet them all.

I have studied American elections since George Washington's, and I have watched the past 6 presidential changes.  I have never seen, nor studied an incoming president garner such national hero worship before he even takes office.  From this article it's clear that it isn't just "national" but international as well.  I really haven't ever seen the media so hyped up over a presidential candidate as now...it seems like 24 hour coverage for the past 3 weeks.  The coverage reminds me more of Entertainment media coverage and red carpet coverage than political news.

In my opinion all of this puts an insane level of expectations on the man to fix things.  I had a boss one time tell me "under promise and then over deliver, and you will succeed in whatever you do."  I am afraid we are setting up President Obama for a situation because of our level of fascination where he is "over promising and will have no choice but under deliver".

At the end of the day tomorrow, when all of the parties are over...we will still be at war in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Our economy will still be in a recession.  The stock market will still be tanking.  Banks will still be failing.  Businesses still won't be able to get financing.  People will still be losing their homes to foreclosure.  The Israelis and the Palestinians will still hate each other so much that they will try to kill each other whatever the cost.  Russia will still be bullying Eastern Europe.  North Korea and Iran will still have nuclear weapons.  Conservative radio is still gonna be undermining him & dissecting his every mistake to tens of millions of our fellow citizens.  Our unemployment will still be higher than it has been in more than 3 decades.  There will still be 50 million plus Americans without health coverage.  And there will still be genocide happening in Africa.

But we will all be thrilled with the minute to minute coverage of the inauguration festivities and to know things like who designed Michelle Obama's gown for the festivities?!!

Good luck President Obama...I really think you are gonna need it.
To Peter (Sent Tuesday, January 20, 2009 8:28 PM)
You have so much hate in your heart... why did you waste your time commenting on this article or about President Obama... He is the peoples choice and if you truly believe our last 8 years were without bumps in the road and potholes, please WAKE UP.. This man has put his life up for all those to see.  He is human and can only do so much with ignorance like yours spewing HATE!!!  Its a new day and instead of power negativity into your post, maybe you should go out and help someone in need.  Seperate and selfish thinking has only brought our country to a standstill.  Hope is what this country needs and Change is what he will bring....
The last comment from Peter scares me. To quote him "Geez, have you not listened to obama?  Worse, yet, have you not listened to obama's lies day after day in the campaign.  If his lips are moving, he's lying.........and plotting the complete removal of all freedom." It's sad to think that there are people so full of reactionary emotions that they would say Obama is plotting the complete removal of all freedom. That remark more resembles the outgoing administration. Wiretapping, ileagal search and seizure, constant erroding of our constitutional rights and privilages, all in the name of fighting terrorists that Bush/Cheney never stayed focused on anyway comes to mind. The last president plotting the Iraq War the very following day after 9/11 tells the whole story. Wake up Peter. You have been duped. The rest of the world is hopeful the United States will be returning in the direction our forefathers pointed towards. I am hopeful but there is a hard road ahead. I wuold hope all Americans regardless of their politics would be hoping for the best going forward instead of hating and fear mongering.
Peter...  LOL!  You're laughable.  Tone down the bush-like foreign policy approach tho, you make yourself sound ignorant.  Don't know if that's what you were going for, but it's true.  I suggest you honestly just read up on Bush from several points of view, and then, even tho you don't have to support Obama, you will surely realize why so many people around the world are happy to have him take office.  If you UNDERSTAND why an overwhelming number of people are celebrating, then at least you wont feel so hateful, and you might even feel a little happy yourself.  But first things first, take the first step and start educating yourself.
Peter, you sound like a bitter man.  I don't know why, nor is it my business to know.  You have the right to your opinions.  But when you ask, do the quotes above "really sound grounded or intelligent, my answer has to be "yes".  They have rights to their opinions too. And when you ask "have you not listened to Obama's lies day after day", I have to ask, what lies?  Can you name any outright lies told by Obama?  How do you know he is "plotting the complete removal of all freedom"?  Can you prove any of this?  Where are the facts to back up YOUR opinions?
Peter is an idiot, and too cowardly to list his last name, or at least the city he lives in.  Exactly what did bush do to butcher the English language?  Well, for starters show me a dictionary that has the word "nucular" in it.  I am sick and tired of my fellow Americans that will stand up for the right to bear arms, but not the rights we are supposed to be protecting with those arms.  Like the right of habeus corpus for starters.  The right to not have our government listen to our phone conversations.  1398 of the first 1400 people arrested under the so called Patriot Act had nothing to do with terrorism.  This is all just a gross misuse of power by the government.  Thomas Jefferson said that we have a responsibility to dismantle a government that ceased being "of, by and for the people", the Bush administration stopped being those things on 9-11-2001.
Poor little Peter, still living with your mommy are you?  Well why is it so hard to believe that America has come up by leaps and bounds with this one event.  We have been thought in a negative light for the past few years and yes our former president did indeed butcher the language.  But for one day can you and the rest who think like you, put your pettiness aside and know we have indeed done a good thing.
P.S.  To all our British Friends...Peter (the idiot) called Britain a "worthless island that would be part of Germany right now".  Let me be the first to apologize for this thoughtless comment.  I would like to thank Britain for being smart enough to keep the tyrants at bay during WWII until FDR was able to motivate the populace of America to join the fight.  To this day, Britain is one of the few countries along with Canada that I would send my son to war to defend.  Iraq certainly is not.  There are three tests that we should pass before going to war.  We should be able to win, it should be right, and it should be for the benefit of our country.  We may pass "one" of these tests for Iraq.  Obama will make sure we pass them all before starting such a foolish "crusade". And make no mistake, this was a "crusade for Bush, he said so himself early on.
Peter, I think you're missing what it's all about. We (the USA) by majority, don't approve of the devisive and confrontational approach. There are problems and opportunities at hand that you (we) can't manage alone. While we may not view all things the same, we'll accomplish more if we work and build together. Fighting evil with evil as we have these past years reminds me of an old saying about wrestling with a pig... you only get muddy and the pig likes it. Any farmer will tell you that there's a better way. But it doesn't include bashing the "brits". There's nothing negative in this article. If I were there, I'd have a brew with them.
Dear Britain,

Please excuse Peter.

I am sure what he meant to say was, “My Goodness, Britain! When the United States and the rest of the world were busy trying to follow a doctrine of isolationism, you stared down the fiercest war machine on the planet for two years - entirely alone!” And…”Oh yeah…way to hang in there during the Blitz!” And..”By the way, thanks for backing us up for all these years.”

As for Peter’s observations…or lack thereof…regarding Bush butchering the English language, and his suggestion that President Obama is equally inept in his communications, I can only refer one to Peter’s own writing for proof-positive that he truly has no clue regarding the proper use of the language.

You see…Peter is the cousin in the family that we really didn’t want the neighbors to know about. Unfortunately, when we weren’t watching very carefully, he somehow got drunk and found a keyboard. Please accept our apologies, both for us not minding him more closely, and for his general ignorance.

Cheers from Santa Cruz
The one thing that makes America great is the fact that even a person like Peter can say his crap and have no fear of retribution. Peter, tell all of us. Just how did your session go today with your Psychiatrist. MORON!
Peter, Peter, Peter, you need to get a grip, young man. How quick you forget that it was those very same Brits that sent their AWACS and aircraft to our shores to protect us, daring anyone to try anything, while we picked ourselves up off the ground after being sucker punched on 9/11. (I'm not meaning to slight what the Canadians did for us). President Obama was elected by a majority of American votes, that's not removing freedom, that's letting freedom ring. And it might surprise you to know that I am  Vietnam Era Vet, and a native Texan, who tends to hammer the English language at times, which even I find humorous. So, I suggest you give the Brits a break, they have been our friends and have had ours backs more times than not!
Yes, Peter, I HAVE listened to Mr. Obama. I have also listened to Mr. Bush the Lesser. It is WONDERFUL to hear a speaker who will be quoted in books to come for his oratory, while Mr. Bush the lesser is remembered only for filling books with his gaffes. For the first time in eight miserable years I can once again listen to MY president and have my pride back.

The British were your hero Bush the Lesser's most loyal friends during the Iraq fiasco, even after it became clear THAT adventure was based on lies. I respect that; clearly they honor our help in WWII.

Perhaps you don't realize that had the British not held on so heroically All alone in the first two years of that war, Hitler could very possibly be our president as well as their king. I recommend you read some history before you post. Or perhaps you PREFER Hitler?

Most of your fellow right-wingers now realize how badly they were fooled, and now are at least wishing Mr. Obama well.

And by the way, how free do you feel going through airport security, or having your phone tapped without a warrant, or subject to being detained as a terrorist for years on some person's whim, without evidence, without a lawyer, without ANY rights that were unalienable in 1776?
Peter, i really hope you can sit and read the words that you have said, for you have made not the world or President Obama seem at fault, but yourself. People like you are the reason why this country got in this mess in the first place. People who complain, but do not take action to make things better in this country. As a people, we now have the ability to cooperate together and work on a scale that we couldn't have during the years of the Bush administration. We and the world have confidence in President Obama, and he has confidence in us. This in and of itself is revolutionary, since there has not been a president that was able to so quickly unite so many people in so little time. so again peter, being a part of a newly optomistic society, you have the right to say certain things, but realize that what you have said will make you the type of person that this country and its people will defeat.
Mr. Obama, You have a long way to go as all world is hoping for something from you, People living with HIV/AIDS accross the World have heard about Pres. Bush because of His heart for them. Now the ball is on your side. World economy crisis, war in Gaza, US soldiers in Iraq etc, etc all eyes on you, It's may prayer that GOD ALMIGHTY, THE CREATOR OF HEAVEN AND EARTH, Give you so much strength to live up to your expectations and expectations of all others accross the world,
Well said Peter. You sure showed everyone just how intelligent you are.P.S.Sorry about that big word in the middle.
God forbid Obama has to deal with all George W. Bush did .....terrorist attacks, hurricanes with whining leeches unwilling or able to help themselves, an ignorant, liberal governing body giving away $ we didn't have .... time will tell .  When Reagan left office no one thought much of him either .  And yes, let's have Britain and some of these countries that are so PROUD of America at last, elect a black prime minister etc.  Put your money where your mouth is or shut up.  CATCH UP !  Blacks have LONG had more than a fair chance here ... UNCF, NAACP, Black history month, etc etc ... if we had a United White College Fund we'd be racist ... WAKE UP WORLD ... WE FREED THEM A LONG TIME AGO.  America has been the land of opportunity for quite some time ! If this election wasn't about race, why does the media and so many others make such a BIG deal about Obama being the first African American president ?  In my book, we've ALL been Americans ... not German American, Irish American, Hispanic American ... for a LONG time !
I love reading comments like Peter's above, who call everyone idiots and then demonstrate their intellectual superiority by botching the spelling of basic words - "you brits would no little about the concept of freedom..."  Don't you mean "know"?  If ignorance is bliss, you must really be enjoying life right now.
Mr. President and First Lady;
I write this in honor of my grand parents and parents whom I know would have been elated to have witnessed this day in history.  I watched and reminished in silence as I thought of the many times they had prayed and dreamed for this day.  I always knew their struggles as blacks/Negroes in the 1900's so this day was an honor to them to let me and their children; great grand and grnad children know that "the dream is realized" and they can rejoice for this day which the Lord has made.  Your election tells the world that with God all things are possible.  With much love from my heroes who left a "royal legacy" in their children and grand children, Johhny and Anna Branch Mason, Margetsville NC, Jordan and Fannie Grant Cumbo, Jackson NC, and Samuel "Sam" and Florida Mason Cumbo of Chesapeake VA.we embrace and applaud your nomination and pray that God sends his Angels to shadow you on each of your journeys.  To God be the Glory!  The Mason, Bishop, Mitchell, Overton, Grant, Spruill, Sprately, Cotton and Cumbo Family
Worse, yet, have you not listened to obama's lies day after day in the campaign.  If his lips are moving, he's lying.........and plotting the complete removal of all freedom.  Of course, you brits would no little about the concept of freedom, having traded free markets and your guns for socialism and billy
clubs long ago.  Look where there has gotten you.  Enjoy your poverty and stay on your side of the pond.

WELL, VERY WELL SAID!
Peter thank you for seeing through the OBAMA FOG!
who would have thought! it is history in the making! we salute you americans, you have came a long way for this.. as i see it hope, courage, aspiration and determination has been made it possible, now its time to deliver, you all have a role to play, use it wisely, there might never be this change again.

to the president!!!

I hope Obama will be a great president, but it is to early to know.  I am amazed at the power people believe the president has.  Neither Bush or his administration cause all the problems in the world nor will Obama or his administration fix all the problems in the world.  People - get a grip. Obama is not the second coming.  I was proud to be an American and I am still proud to be an American and I have no doubt I will be proud tomorrow to be an American.  I love my country regardless of who the president is  and regardless of the opinions from so-called journalist, celebrities and foreign countries.  I read. I listen. I make my own opinions. I just don't understand the pathetic hand wringing for approval from the "community of nations".  The only way to get approval from everyone is to be nothing.
If MSNBC's policy is not approve comments attacking others, how did Peter's comments get approved? Very rude and not logical at all. For shame
Everyone who is excited because the US has an African American president, enjoy that aspect of it, but please be color blind on his policies and what he really wants to do and has the power to do. One cannot negotiate with Iran, Hamas, North Korea, or Chavez. They do not believe in capitalism and openly seek the destruction of the US and our allies as long as they do not capitulate to their way of thinking. Obama's solution to the US economy problems is MORE spending and having the government play a bigger roles in our lives. This does not get one out of recession nor create business successes. It makes the public more dependent on the government. I believe Europe provides excellent examples of the government having too much say and over taxing the entrepreneurs out of starting businesses. The US has been unique in its freedoms, and even where people don't agree, there is a certain American spirit and adventure that has been threaded through our history that I believe Obama (as well intentioned as he is to do good) will be erasing through the concept of "the government knows best what is good for you". I simply cannot think this "change" is good for most people.
