Anti-Israel demonstration in Egypt turns violent

AL ARISH, Egypt – The tension in Al Arish’s main square was palpable. Dozens of baton-wielding Egyptian security forces lined the streets, as Muslim worshipers listened to Friday prayers in the surrounding, overcrowded mosques.

One cleric said in his sermon that Islam would survive Israel’s ground and air attacks on Gaza. He likened the world’s Muslim population to a human body and said that Palestinian suffering in Gaza was like a limb undergoing trauma and injury.

"Just because one body part is in pain, does not mean that the human body will die," the cleric said.

Demonstrators take to the streets of Al Arish’s main square, in protest of Israel’s attacks on Hamas targets in neighboring Gaza.

After the sermon, hundreds of men and boys streamed into the square, chanting what could only be politely described as anti-Jewish slogans. Predictably, banners in support of Gazans were unfurled and the loud street protests began.

One of Egypt’s most powerful clerics had called for pro-Palestinian demonstrations across Egypt. Some of the rawest emotions were on display here in Al Arish, a coastal community just an hour’s drive from Egypt’s border with Gaza. Many of this town’s residents know or are related to Palestinians living in Gaza and the area’s businesses are suffering due to the virtual closure of Egypt’s border with Gaza.

Anger aimed at Egyptian authorities
Protesters soon turned their anger from Israel toward Egyptian security forces. For many of these demonstrators, the soldiers represent Egyptian government authorities, who the protesters believe aren’t doing enough to stop the war next door.

Soldiers raised their plastic shields against an ambush of bricks, stones, bottles and shoes – being hit with a shoe is considered a grave insult in Arab culture, as we saw recently with President George W. Bush in Iraq.

Egyptian security forces clear the road in Al Arish for women protesting against Israel’s ground and air attacks on Gaza.

"We are mad at the Israelis, as well as the Americans [and the Egyptians] because they are silent about what’s going on. Egypt is considered a friend of America and they are embarrassing us," one protester told me.

It didn’t take long before the security forces beat back the protesters – men, women and children running in all directions. We saw civilians bleeding, though it was unclear if their injuries came from fellow protesters’ bricks and bottles or the soldiers’ batons.

Regardless, these clashes won’t soothe the simmering anger with Egyptian authorities. Egypt is walking a fine line – its leaders are pushing for an end to the conflict even as they fear that opening the border with Gaza could allow Hamas to spread its extremist interpretation of Islam in Egypt.

‘I am Hamas’
The Egyptian government’s rationale may not be as ludicrous as it sounds. As the demonstrations turned violent, my crew and I took refuge on the rooftop of a nearby building. While my cameraman shot footage of plainclothes policemen beating and dragging some protesters away, the building owner introduced me to his five-year old son, Ali, who was fascinated by what was taking place on the street below.

"What’s your name?" I asked the boy in Arabic. He didn’t answer.

Trying to continue the conversation, I asked him if he was Palestinian. He didn’t reply.

"Are you Egyptian?" I asked.

"I am Hamas," little Ali said.

This, from a five-year old boy.

Politely described as anti-Jewish Slogans????  Who are you kidding.  The Muslims have been VERY vocal about their hatred for Israel, the Jews and America.  Israel has every right to defend itself.  Hamas has been firing rockets into Israel for far too long.  They were given warning after warning and even after signing a cease fire they didn't quit.
Then Israel sent out notice in advance so that civilians could clear the areas where they knew Hamas militants to be - they had a choice.  Hamas has no respect for human life - they use children, women,  as human shields and set up their military areas in schools, hospitals and neighborhoods.  Israel does not do that and neither does America.
Islam operates under the three "F"'s  Force - they force it on people in the name of Allah.  Fanatics - they turn the young into fanatics through brainwashing techniques and Fear - they use threats, protests, and terrorism to try to scare people into remaining Islamic and to try to get the rest of us to keep our mouths shut and look the other way.
It is time to put a stop to the march of Islam.
"I am Hamas" -- by a five year old boy. Gee, wonder how a child that age learns these things.
I support Israel, i support America, I support Egypt. I support the innocent civilians that do not want this thrust upon them. Everyone has a right to live in peace. Palestinians AND Israelis. If you want to be treated like an adult human being, you must act like one. Gazans, stop shooting rockets, see what happens. Until then Israel is reacting. Someone has to stop shooting.
It's interesting that the country that everyone calls the victim in this conflict (Israel -- supposedly one of America's allies) attacked and nearly sank a US Navy ship -- the USS Liberty.  During this two-plus hour attack by warplanes and torpedo boats 34 American servicemen were killed.  Today's action is just another example of Israel doing what they wish and then trying to justify it later.
Some in Egypt are angry at the US because we're not doing anything to stop the war between Isr./Hamas?  Gee, did Egyptians or palestinians do anything to help us after 9/11? No, you celebrated the cowardly acts on innocent people on 9/11. We've seen you're true colors so I'm just going to sit back and watch Israel do what it's doing. I do feel bad for the innocent that have died though.
We must as American's seprate oursleves from the pandoras box pain that is Israel. More and more, we as a nation are held hostage to the inhumane actions of Israel to the legitmate rights of the Palestinian people.

Whether we like Hamas or not,is not the point. We as a Nation must become an even handed friend to all nations that do not oppose us. And not allow one nation,Israel, to make their policy ours.

We are not Israel and they are most surely not us.
Overzealous Israelis and a AIPAC supported U.S. Congress are creating more enemies with this violent mis-adventure.  This is NOT the way to make friends and influence people!  Extremism must be marginalized by the force of ideas and support, not by bombs!  Hurry Obama!  Hurry!
Little Ali is the next generation wanna-be suicide bomber! What a waste!
STOP THE KILLING! STOP ISRAELI TERRORISM!
Muslims don't like it when a Jew fights back? It reminds me of my high school days, when after being attacked repeatedly by a school bully, I punched his lights out. Guess what? I was sent to the office and chastised. Sort of reminds me of the present day French, Muslims, U.N., etc. This world, no longer has any moral or ethical back bone and can't be taken seriously. Sorry world you did it to yourselves! And by the way, I'm not a Jew but a third generation Norwegian and proud of it!
This conflict has been ongoing for millenia let them fight it out.
Alphonso Van Marsh, I gues that you are Hamas, not that boy...
As long as civilian lives are being lost, the conflict is not worth it.  Shame on Israel.
It is always the people who suffer.. all goverments are abliged to act and talk like they CARE about their people. I am so very sorry. It is the fulfilling of the times. Hamas...Ha..they use their own people as shields and then are able to convence their people that Israel is to blame.
Don't judge those for who's lives you haven't lived.  I am pro peace.
Sad when even the Egyptians are afraid to open there boarders and letting the Hamas in. Just shows you how radical they are.
While I agree that Israel's heavy handed attacks should be protested, it's too bad the Arabic/Muslim world doesn't protest half as strongly when extremist groups kill more fellow muslims in a single suicide attack then Israel does in an entire week of bombing.  The ignorance is appalling.
Israel is a terrorist state. Just because they have an army it doesn't justify a mass murder!  They are indeed a Hitler product.  What a shame!
"chanting what could only be politely described as anti-Jewish slogans"

Why shield us from the truth?  Why be polite?  Let your readers know the true anti-semitic nature of the anti-Israel protesters, and unfortunately of much of the Arab world.
There's are so many pro-palastenian comments on these replies. I can see that the NBC's audience is all Muslim.
Carlos they are mad th US for more than that; The US give Israel 3 billion dollars annually from your tax dollars + supply it with their modern warfare weapons.

And to Barb Kent
Same goes to the Israelis:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CGz6wEBswU
The Christians and Muslims of Palestine and Gaza have been under Occupation since 1967.  People in Gaza can't even fish from their beach in the ocean or import or export anything.  It's a huge jail.  Gazan's aren't terrorists, they are freedom fighters.  We didn't accuse the French resistance of being terrorists when they tried to kick-out Germany.  Israel is the oppressor and Gaza has every right to try to free themselves
What is the point of the story? That the rally was prepared and staged in advance (banners were ready)? Why wouldn't you give us an approximate translation of the anti-Israeli slogans. That Moslems are supporting other Moslems? What are you telling us? Oh! I got it! It's the story of the 5 year old saying that he is Hamas! I got it. Will the next article be that Israel's response is not "proportionate" to what Hamas is doing? Are you asking that that they lob unguided missiles into civilian areas of Gaza? Is that the proportionate response you would suggest?
Israel shot rockets into Ashkelon in 1948. Drove 10,000 of the 11,000 residents to Gaza. Israelis imported Jews from Argentina and other nations into Ashkelon.  Now, Israelis do not want Gazans to shoot rockets at Israel.
My neighbor is upset with me and we cant resolve our differences through peacefull negotiations. My neighbor resorts to randomly and repetedly shooting my house with a small caliber weapon. I suit up- march over to his house, with my massive arsenal, and take care of business! Go ISREAL!!!
Little Ali does not need to be thought anything. He feels anger and identifies both with the victims that look like him and with those he see as protectors of these victims, Hamas. In his mind he really IS Hamas.
Barb, Rob, Carlos, and TN woman - I agree with the sentiment that is coming from all of you. You always hate to see a child who is already brainwashed at 5 yrs old. As an American Jew there is nothing more that I want than peace in the middle east for everyone. Israeli's should not have to deal with a terrorist organization who continually bombs them and the Palestinian people should not have to deal with Hamas either. Hamas does not care for the every day Palestinian as it shows when they fire rockets from schoolyards and Mosques and crowded neighborhoods. I hate to see any innocent die regardless of their religeous beliefs. Let us all hope that this can be reconciled peacefully and hope for a change in Palestinian policies in Gaza. I hope Fatah can reclaim Gaza because I know the Abbas regime seeks peace.
The parents of that boy need to be put to jail!, for teaching his 5 year old son wanting to be a terrorist!
If you teach kids to hate other people and become terrorist, who do you think they are going to become?
It is not the boys foult he made that statement, it is his parents responsebility on teaching this kids a peacefull life.
that other pic showing a older boy tending to that lump on his head given to him courtesy of the Egyptian Security Guard will be little wanna-be-ali in a few years. hahahahaha!
Little Ali shows us once again that Arabs/Muslims at the moment can’t live in peace with Israel or anyone who is different, or who follows a different faith.  Until they learn to be tolerant to other people, they will continue causing problems for the civilized world and also will suffer as a result.  As parents and schools teach an alternative version of history and indoctrinate their kids, fixing the mid-East will take many years.
Very good points Rob Long but even more so for Carlos, I have NO sympathy for a country that celebrates at a time when we're mourning! We won't stoop to the level of celebrating something of this magnitude but like Carlos said, you've shown your true colors. It's ironic how every country "hates" the U.S.A. because everyone else does but loves us when they need us. Give me a BREAK! Like Rob said, stop shooting.
the world is appalled and outraged by the violence and carnage. money powers vs innocents is a crying shame.kill the enemy, not the innocents..........
no peace, no hope, no justice only bullets , bombs, massacre, genocide, humiliation, occupation, oppression for palestinians.good job israel
Israel and Hamas are equally guilty for this mess.  Their economic blockade on Gaza is just one of many examples.  Screw them all!
It has to be a give and take. Have both side stop fighting for 24 hours. Let the red cross trucks go in and show the other side and the world you want to stop fighting. It has to start somewhere. You can't blame Israel for protecting themselves. What would the USA do if Canada kept on throwing bombs at us.
ALL OF YOU ARE DUMBASS PEOPLE AND DONN'T KNOW THE CRUELTY AND UNDERSTAND THE CRUELTY THE AMERICANS AND THE ISREALIES ARE DOING TO THESE PEOPLE. YOU ARE ACTUALLY EVERYONE IS KEPT HIDDEN FROM THE TRUTH. NOBODY KNOWS THE REAL SATAN THE ISREAL WHICH IS TRYING TO RUN THE WORLD ONE DAY, THEY ARE ALREADY SUCCESSFUL ON TAKING OVER THE AMERICANS AND THE GOVERNMENT THESE AMERICAN LEADERS EVEN YOUR VERY OWN OBAMA IS A PUPPET OF ISREAL. WEL THAT SAID THE HAMAS IS A HMANITARIAN GROUP I THINK THATS WHAT IT ATLEAST SEEMS LIKE BECAUSE WHILE THE ISREALIES ALONG WITH THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT WAS TRYING TO STOP FOOD ANND THIER SHELTER THE HAMAS STOOD UP. SO WHOS THE BAD GUY THE PEOPLE TRYING TO ELIMINATE THE PALESTINES AND ETHINICALLY CLEANSE THEM OUT OR THE PEOPLE FEDUP AND TRING TO HELP THIER PEOPLE? ONE DAY WHEN ALL THE ISLAMIC COUNTRIES LIBERATE THEN YOU WONT SAY OR HAVE  REASON TO SAY YOUR WITH ISREAL THEN YOU WILL BE THE MINORITY.
"I am Hamas" by a five year old is taught by the ISRALIES teaching Children how to KILL innocent people and how to breed hatred!
Finally, A blog written by an objective outsider, as opposed to an Arab or Jew who's views could be slanted by cultural bias. Alphonso Van Buren, welcome to the real world as experienced by Israel for the past 40 years. Only now, do the western and more moderate Arab contries begin to realize how their ignoring the rise of Hamas and Hezbollah threatens them too. It was fine when it was only in Israel's backyard, and now it's spreading around the world to detriment of us all.
Little Ali...what a kid?
the nazis did not have 60 years to cause all their destruction, like the israelis have had.
Does anybody remember that Hammas was imprisioning anyone who fired rockets into Israel during the ceasefire until Israel launched a raid into Gaza on Nov 4th while we were busy with the elections here?

That is what broke the ceasefire and then Hammas stopped arresting the people who launched rockets. What would the people of New York do if all of their citizens were herded onto Long Island, surrounded by a fence, were starving, unable to get aid, and this had gone on for 1 1/2 years? They would do the same thing the people of Gaza are doing: resisting the occupation.

I love how the west supports Egypt as well. They are one of the most oppressive regimes on this earth but because they follow our orders they are rewarded and there is hardly a peep about their arrest and torture and repression of their people.

We, the west, are hypocrites.
America should get involved in a situation like this instead of wasting its time with iraq..

yes it is true that hamas should stop shooting rockets at israel, but what other defense do they have. there is more to the situation then just terrorists killing innocent israelies, in fact its funny that they were pretty much defending their point of view in terms of having a bunch of israeli settlers in palestine.

its funny how the definition of terrorism has changed. i feel terrorists are considered only those who have the less powerful army and weapons, aka anyone who is not American backed.

Israel is killing civilians daily too.. i tend to think they are the terrorists
Little Ali said what he said for the reason what he see's around him. He is sticking up for his people. I support palestine not hamas. Someone has to stick up for us, we are  boardered with no where to go. Free Palestine!!
Hamas is killing their own people by continuing to fire rockets at Isreal. Hamas is guilty of genocide. They are cowards who use innocent people as shields. No wonder none of the other Arab countries will step up and help Hamas. The real shame is that all the innocent Palestinians suffer at the hands of zealot Hamas. Shame on Hamas!
What do you expect. We told them they must have elections and then we did not accept who they elect.
Stop calling Isreal a democracy. It's not. Why do we support them? They do nothing but suppress people. I true democracy would have given the Palastinians there own country 20 years ago.

If Barak comes into office and supports them openly you can forget about peace in the middle east ever.
Hamas is not a terrorist group you idiots they are there to protect the palestinians. 600 palestinians have died and only 12 israel.  come on give your head a shake.
Rob, What if the Mexicans suddenly crossed the border (re stole) you town, tried driving you out of HOME and COUNTRY and killed you if you dare protest?? Then what Robbie!! Blow it out your ear you coward.  Carlos 666
You all need a serious education on the true history of Israel and the plight of the Palestinians.  I do not support any group but I do have this to say.  If your home town had been illegally occupated for centuries and the military pulls out but you are still not allowed to cross certain borders that they have marked off.  Everyday you have to go through numerous check points to get to work if they let you.  Go through these same check points to take your kids to school if they let you.  The economic development of your town is dead.  No commerce in no commerce out.  OH by the way you live in abject poverty or stradle the fence on it.  You have to digs tunnels to the nearest town just to get fuel for your generators and food to eat because by the way you live in a virtual blackout in your town and the stores barely have enough to feed your family.  You are going to something.  Something has to give.  What are you going to do?
Egytians and Israelis have always had small grudges but the facts should  be based on modern motive.
Why do people have to live in peace?
They never did so please stop talking about this fairytale land of freedom.
Arabs and Jews have to fight it out.
Period!
