Angry parents in China

2008 was not a good year for parents in China.

And 2009 might not be much of an improvement.

Last May’s earthquake in Sichuan saw the collapse of some 7,000 classrooms, killing thousands of students.

Four months later, news surfaced that a major brand of infant formula contained melamine, an industrial chemical that was added to help artificially boost the protein levels in watered-down milk.  At least six babies have died and more than a quarter million more have fallen ill from drinking the tainted formula.

Compensation will be available to families of victims in both instances.  The government has offered $8,823 for each killed child to the quake parents.  The China Dairy Association this week confirmed a compensation plan was in the works for the milk parents.  Some reports have said families could receive up to $29,000 if their children died, but the details are still unclear.

But parents in both cases are outraged.

Many quake parents say they want answers, and some have taken legal action against local officials, construction companies, and school authorities -- all of whom they believe are responsible for allowing the shoddy construction of school buildings that collapsed in the earthquake.  A payout is not going to silence their demands for justice.  And, as my colleague Gu Bo reports, these 58 families remain steadfast – and courageous – in the face of relentless pressure from local officials to give up their lawsuit.

Price of a life

Similarly, in the milk scandal, many parents are criticizing the dairy association for not giving details immediately about the compensation plan.  Lan Juanxian, young mother of twin boys age 14 months, traveled all the way from Guangxi province in the far southwest to join a group of 10 parents in western Beijing to protest the proposed compensation.

VIDEO: Mother wants answers.

“Has [the fund] started?  How does it work?  I don’t know where the fund will be set up,” she said.  “Is it in Beijing?  I’m far from Beijing….  How do I find it?”

But Lan did say she was told that parents of sick babies with less severe symptoms would receive just under $300 (2,000 yuan) for compensation.

“When our kids grow up, if they have kidney failure or other illnesses, they’d say, When I had trouble, you took that 2,000 yuan.  You bought my whole life for 2,000?  No!’” said Lan, crying angrily.

The milk scandal has attracted widespread media interest in China.

Dozens of parents have opted to file lawsuits against Sanlu Group, the dairy company at the center of the melamine-contaminated milk scandal.  Although the company declared bankruptcy last month, victims’ families across China say Sanlu -- and 21 other dairy companies also guilty of selling milk products containing melamine – should be held accountable.

But a court has yet to hear a case filed by parents of victims in the milk scandal.

“What about the pain my children had to suffer?” asked Lan.  “They are so small, what do they know?  All they can do is cry helplessly.”

I think the Chinese people have finally decided it's worth speaking out against their uncaring government.  Years of having no choices at all have ultimately led to punishing the youngest and most vulnerable citizens.  Good luck parents, your cause is worthy. Parents of the world stand with you.
It appears is facing the same pains of capitalizm that years ago or centeries ago othe capitalistic governments expieranced.  And some still face; they un-safe manufactoring or construction because of greed.  At least they can be thankful of some compensation, where as before they communist party would have simply shut them up!  Good for the people of China...  keep pushing!  Someday, I hope but doubt, business people will see that "taking shortcuts" costs more.  Any that is all "they" care about...  $$$  not matter what country you are in.
Those poor families! My heart goes out to the parents who already struggle to make sure that their children have what they need. The big companies SHOULD be held accountable because who knows what kinds of health problems might be a side effect of the tainted milk. Keep fighting and maybe they will see that as humans we have a responsibility to others!
It strikes me as substantial human rights progress in China that these parents are not yet(?)locked away in some re-education camp for daring to protest.
China takes toxic waste and polutants much too lightly. Their quest for money means more than life itself. Lack of following high moral standards due to greed is on the rise around the globe. Companies following sub standard principles need to be monetarily punished to the full extent on the law plus an additional 65 percent on top. P.S buy American
I find it appalling, yet not surprising that something like this milk incident has happened. It appears to me that what is happening world-wide, economically, environmentally, governmentally and in business is that somehow, someway, it's coming to light to the world-wide population that corruption is alive and well. I look at everything that is happening through out the world as the natural purging process, much like Mother Nature will purge itself, when the earth reaches the climatic point that it needs to reach to rectify itself. Businesses, governments and economies are recitfy themselves in spite of themselves. It's a call to all of us to be outrage and take action. I applaud the parents who are doign just that. We all still have a voice, we just need to find it again within each of us.
Buy baby milk from the USA!! We love you!!
I'm glad that Chinese parents are standing up for their children and families-and we need to support them.  Families in China have had governmentally-forced programs require abortion, contraception and/or sterilization after a married couple has their first (or in some rural areas, second) child.  So for many of these families, their only child is either sick or dead, and many of the couples are now past childbearing.  No wonder they're mad.  Thank God I'm an American, and thank God my wife and I are free to raise our family to the size we see fit.
It seems to me the chinese gobernment does not care about their citizens. All they care about is in keeping their controll. This cannot be so forever. Someday (hopefully soon) this will be over!
As long as our government allows us to buy tainted products from cheap, abusive and opressive government supported China businesses who will care?  Don't think for one minute that our government will do anything to change how business is done.  This country (US)is only concerned with profits for those few chosen wealthy families who get them elected.
$8,000 or (gee!) even $29,000 for your babies LIFE.  Absolutely incredible.

How insulting.

I hope the parents going for legal action don't give up.  If it were my child and some louse killed them due to shoddy construction or throwing chemicals into milk for higer profits, I'd want his/her head on a platter.
Lets hope and pray that 2009 is a much better year, for Chinese parents, and for everybody else world wide!!!    stephen odzer
This woman is a real peoples hero. She speaks with a passion for human dignity.
She could be speaking from a hundred different locations on this earth at this time.
Her words truly convene  the hurt and plain of a world people who are crying out in many ways to end these genocidal practices to kill off the earth and its inhabitants.

World greed is causing suffering all over the world.  It is all about money, and not about quality or life.  The USA is getting to be the same.  The Love of money is the root of all evil.
Well if the dairy companies are guilty of selling milk products containing melamine – they should be held accountable and pay the victmas compensation
People in this country (USA) complain about the cost of building because of building and zoning regulations, now you know why the extra cost is justified.
My heart breaks for these mothers. I feel so sorry for them. They are helpless and being taken completely advantage of and it's just plain WRONG! I get so angry sometimes with our country and then I see something like the struggles of these families in China and am reminded of how lucky I am.
wow i rember the story on the milk as well as the earth q.  thank you for the follow up on both stores, these companys, from the so called socialized world  has taken a pass on moral caritor and comond sence, they were so smart, that they for got to think in the long run how it would effect not only the peaons but theirs and their familys own destany.  now live with that, see you on the way down, or will you show what a big coward you all are and kill yoursevles before they can face the people and answer for the things they have done.

it feels good to have a voice, and that what i think matters to others

This is truly the saddest thing I've ever heard! Why would anyone do such a thing like this? My heart goes out to all the mothers who've lost their child because of this.
GOOD! Glad to see the people/citizens that make up this country stand up for humane treatment and rights.  ALSO NOTE and please add to further news reports:  melamine tainted food in the supermarkets here in Japan imported from China was a concern throughout most of 2008.  Long before melamine became a USA and China recognized problem, it was HERE in various food products packaged in China for import to Japan. Many fallen ill but thankfully, the government took fast action. TWENTY ONE COMPANIES GUILTY using melamine to cheat the consumer to make more money! Time for regulations that make changes for the good. And CHANGE begins with the individual!  Not with catchy slogans or a first-time black president, or woman president, etc. but with peoples persistence as well as the news cooperation on making public such knowledge.

Thank you for a first rate informative article.
i think its the government responsibility to punish this irresponsible companies. Just because of profit they jeorpardise consumer's health. I think China should control all this company because in the end this control will benefit the country as it is one of the highest goods withdrawal in the world. I am a chinese, and sometimes I hear all this, it just make me so shameful as my country of origin does this to the world. Have pride in what you do! Don't shame your countrymen.
I feel for these families. They are told to have one child. They do so and then their government's environmental policies do nothing to protect those children and their families. It's not just the mile or the shoddy building construction. It's the polluted air, food and drinking water. Is America perfect? No, but at least we have the ability to protest, protest to our local authorities, sue, change laws and/or through out of office officials who turn a deaf ear to our needs. We do that through election. If China wants to be a good neighbor and trading partner, then they better clean up their act. Americans have already protested their actions by not buying their products. I'm sorry it had put families out of work, but, their outcry should add to our boycott. Maybe then, things will change.
And this is a huge surprise to these people, even after seeing melamine poison our pets, excess lead in Chinese-manufactured toys for our children, and pharmaceuticals that make our sick loved ones even MORE ill?  We don't shop at Wal-Mart, and we avoid buying Chinese made products as much as possible.  Don't know where your dog/cat food was made?  Call them up and ask them.  Don't know where your prescriptions were manufactured?  Ask your pharmacy for full disclosure of country of manufacture.  Don't EVEN buy so much as a toy, binky, or formula until you've done the research.  In China, life is cheap.  Don't let it become that way here!
This shows that all the compensation of this world is inadequate to answer the grief of mankind. Only God who is the creator can repay us for our grief. We must turn to Him in times of need. He sent His son Jesus to pay a debt He did not owe for those who owed a sin debt they could not pay. Praise God that He will make all things right and give life everlasting to those who have faith in Him. One day when God brings an end to this sinful world, He will restore life and health to all who repent of sin and put trust in Him. Until them we must hope. We will have pain, suffering, and injustice along with the joys of this life, but He will make it as if none of this happened. When God brings the restoration, all the former things will be forgotten and it will be as though evil never happened for those who trust Him. Those who are evil and selfish will perish forever in a Lake of Fire to trouble others no more. God is just and complete in His justice which can not be had in this present world. A new world is coming and God is the power of it all.
With the increasing abuse to citizens & consumers, maybe we'll see a rise in consumer protection and watchdog groups.  I would like to see how the Chinese people choose to have the government protect them from unscrupulous activities.  Do they continue bailouts and subsidizes or does it increase legal representation.
My friend and Colleague Dr. Heather Goff, MD has done work in the earthquake affected areas. She is a child and adolescent psychiatrist in Yale Medical school. Please contact her for specific information on the ground.
Well it seems like the whole world is mad about something, or at someone.

Man everybody needs to take a chill pill, plus I am sure President Obama will take care of allot of these problems.
I posted a comment. Where is it?
Despair is every where in America these days. Why don't  western journalists see it?
This should be something for parents to think in the future here in the US and across the world when they are expecting a baby- PLEASE BREASTFEED! Relying on formula is like playing russian rulette.
I know in some cases you cant breastfeed but over 95% of mothers should be able to if they try and try harder.
why do the Chinese officials want to keep this situation quiet, the whole world knows about it, and their attempts to bully parents to drop the case, o nly shows how corrupt they are willing to be to protect themselves.
This is nothing to do about saving face, its about stoppin g the truth of how far up the government chain the corruption goes in both these cases.
How much of the compensation will be stolen by corrupt officials?
The parents dont stand a chance, the odds and their own government are against them.
All the rest of the worlds politicians do is kao tao to the Chinese Government, and say how good they are, how well they are doing, how much progress they have made, whilst I admit there is some progress because some parents have voiced their anger in public, how many more have been arrested for being mentally unfit becaue they want the truth, and wont stay quiet, is this progress, I dont think so, and yes Ive lived in China for many years and seen all the tricks and foreign government spin about China, the west have made China stronger and now we are scared to also say the truth, remember the Emporers new clothes, Peace in our time, safe food at the 2008 Olympics, 75% of Shanghai without power, when Bush visited, so Pudong could have enough power, you want more!!!!?????? how much can you take, how much more should the world take, and how much more should we allow the innocents in China suffer because of hiding the truth??
They ought to put the heads of those dairy companies to death!  Or better yet, feed them the equivalent amount of melamine for their size and let them suffer the way those poor babies did.
How convenient for the San Lu Company to suddenly declare bankruptcy! Weren't they making money from the sales of their tainted milk?  Well--who had that money?  Someone should go after the heads of the company--a full investigation from the ministry of interior and government prosecutor officials.  What these women are saying is true! Imagine selling out those children and all the pain and medical treatments needed that might stretch out a lifetime. It is a real shame , and the government should prosecure heavily those responsible as criminals!
And where do we in the U.S. come into play with this mess? We put up Dollar Stores on every corner of main street promoting slave labor while filling their leaders pocketbooks with monies needed for their economy. Instead they pour that money into munitions, military, and questionable experiments that are killing their people. They're literally dying for a dollar.  We need to fix our debt with them and shut down every Dollar Store that does not stock EVERYTHING made in the USA. We need to make these dollar products in factories here in the USA and put Americans to work to develop what other Americans seem so drawn to buy at these $1 stores.
This is a real David and Goliath story.  I'm impressed by the victims' fortitude.  Hopefully they will succeed in some way.
I hope these parents get the answers they need. I don't know about the responsiveness of the Chinese government but I feel for these parents. A parent's heartbreak around the world.
Welcome to the real world China - bankruptcies by irresponsible companies, shoddy construction by the government, and token payoffs instead of meeting their responsibilities; and last but not least - lots of LAWSUITS.  Nicely done.
