From ‘reckless’ to ‘proud,’ Iraqis respond to shoe-hurl

BAGHDAD – Many Iraqis were surprised when an Iraqi reporter hurled his shoes at President George W. Bush during a press conference with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Sunday. While some Iraqis were shocked, others said the shoe-throwing was an act of valor.
But in general, many Iraqis believe that the insult directed towards Bush has really reflected badly on them – particularly because of their long history of traditions and customs that focus on respecting the guest – even if that guest is considered an "enemy."

"It is a reckless act and it will have bad effect on Iraqi journalists," said Emad Saleem, 40, a reporter for the Saudi Akhabria satellite TV channel. "Our picture as people of the fourth power will be weakened."

Mais Hassan, a 35-year-old editor for the Iraqi Belad newspaper, agreed. "This is not the good way to express one's resentment. The correspondent could yell at Bush or curse him to show his objection to his policies in Iraq."

Aida Mohammed, a 42-year-old housewife, took issue with the act because she believed it reflected badly on all Iraqis. "This is impolite act and it is not like the Iraqis," said Mohammed. "We are known for welcoming the guest – even if he is an enemy. Arabs say welcoming the guest is a must, even for one's enemy."

Likewise, Salah Meead, a 31-year shopkeeper, felt that the act was actually disrespectful to Iraq’s Prime Minister Maliki. "This guy must respect Iraqi PM (Maliki) because he represents all Iraqi people. And if he doesn't have a bit of respect for Bush, because he is a criminal of war, then he can show it by, for example, leaving the conference hall. This act is against us (Iraqis)."

But Salam Jabar, a 48-year-old journalist, defended the act of a fellow newsman. "We are proud of what the correspondent did when he sent two Iraqi missiles from his feet to the head of dirty Bush…History will record this act with gold."

Jamal Salam, a 25-year-old driver, was suspicious of the true intentions of the reporter Muntadar al-Zeidi. "I think this guy wanted lights to be focused on him. If he wants publicity, he is a journalist and through his good reporting he can achieve that. It was a wrong way to become a celebrity."

While the reactions to the shoe-toss vary, many Iraqis still believe that Bush has done well by them by making them get rid of Saddam Hussein and that he is not to be blamed for the consequences of toppling the dictator.

All of you that think that the jerk should have hit President Bush, why don't ya'll move to Iraq or better yet, Afghanastan?  Just wait til Obama gets in the White house, he'll sell us out to Iran.  Let's have respect for our president and show some class in our country instead of just showing our a---!!
It is hypocritical for the journalist to resort to a form of violence to protest the violence that he claims President Bush has fostered in Iraq.
AlZaidi is a brave hero who threw his shoes at George Bush the most disliked and hated U.S. president all over the world.By throwing shoes at Bush's head he threw shoes at the Iraq-U.S.Security Treaty. His hurling shoes at Bush is actually the entire Iraqi nation's throwing shoes to the U.S. occupation of Iraq. His name will be written in the Modern history of the Middle-East with great respect and honour.
The people who condone this make me sick! Like it or not he's your president till January! He represents America for crying out loud, so they just threw a shoe at all of us, and at every man or woman who worked to free them! Saddam would have blown his head off for his defiance! The idea anyone is condoning this is pathetic! I'm especially saddened to see vets families saying this was appropriate! How does your family member feel to know you just trivialized all the effort they put into fighting for these people, and insulted their courage and service? This lack of respect is what's wrong with this country. Where has basic respect and pride gone to? To say you are proud of someone for insulting your president is disgusting. You all should be ashamed of yourselves!
excuse me... does anyone see the big picture.
I am not and never been a Bush fan... but
this is a total insult to all of us as Americans.
Weither we agree or not... they now have freedom of expression because of our Sacrifice. They would never
had dared to do that with Saddam. No matter what our President deserves respect.
To bad most Americans would not have the courage to throw their shoes at Bush.  It would do him good if a few thousand would show up at the White House and throw their shoes at him for his dealings with the economy and the environment.
Wow - did you see Bush's amazing catlike reflexes dodging that shoe?! Almost as slick as how he dodged actual combat during the Vietnam war!

Usually, I hate the looping that is used for the story of the day, but the shoe incident in IRAQ [on another of George W. Bushs' surreptitious visits to that sad land],is delicious. Please keep it up until Jan 19th.

You people who are cheering this terrorist reporter should join him in his country. We may not agree with what our president has done but, we should respect him. Your behavior shows the same kind of acts that we are working to rid others of. You are as childish as the reporter who threw the shoe and deserve no respect from any proud American. I would like to ask any of you who so childishly made rude comments here if you yourself could run th is country without getting us all killed. Grow up!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with Bill in Seattle, and I agree especially with the last paragraph in this article. Most Iraqi's are pleased with the change in their country and no doubt ready for their occupiers to go home which is understandable. I think once we are all done hating Bush, history may just prove he did the right thing all along. Enjoy your retirement W - you deserve it and thanks for having the stones to do what you have done.
In the months and year ahead when "The Messiah" stands in Baghdad at the same podium announcing the troops are leaving...I wonder if the same reporter will be there or Pelosi and Reid will have him hog tied out behind the shed so as not to embarrass "their man" with the same shoes?
five stars to the reporter for the message, zero points for not scoring.  This man did what none of the political leaders of Iraq could do.  He also did what most of the muslim world sees as justified, as well as a large part of the north western population.

Might may make right for a short time, but eventually the message get put out about what is wrong.

To express a widely held view with such a brief action is truly an inspired moment.  Hats off to the daring that change the status quo.
"We give him freedom and he acts like a petulant child."  Oh, come on...  We *could* have taken that position had 1) the justification for going into Iraq been correct (WMDs? What WMDs?), and 2) we not bungled the effort so criminally. 10s of thousands of unnecessary Iraqi deaths can be attributed to the incompetent way "we gave them freedom."
Could it be that people in Iraq, don't really appreciate, what our (well meaning) troops have done, after the collateral damage in innocent civilian lifes is way in the tens of thousands (Green Zone stopped issuing the daily carnage numbers at 35,000).
Ol' Bush should've been a ninja instead of the POTUS; That dude is fast!!!!!
I pray we pull out, and help a new dictator move in and make things return to normal.  Because for many people there, a dictator is their way of "life" (or death if they throw shoes).  It is just as sad that people here in the US have moved into thinking that the word "Freedom" allows you to destroy the very things this country was founded on.
Those two shoes must be the WMDs Mr. Bush was looking for and now he can have them and proudly say Mission Accomplished!
Hey if he could only throw more shoes from all of us here in US. Too bad he missed..!! We can only whine...The world will breathe a sigh of relief and will have a party, when he leaves on Jan 20, 2009. If only we could collect one shoe each from all the homes of brave soldiers that sacrificed their lifes for his naive, childish decision and personal vendata against Saddam and pile them high on the front lawns of his NEW home in Texas. He has plans to relax with 'his feet up', whereas lot of soldiers and their families are fighting for their survival and stay on their 'FEET'...We shud go for OBL and hunt his goons down in Pakistan..
If they don't want us there, we should leave and let them live like the cowards they really are!
This is the true context of the incident.  The man was angry because of the death toll on his people:
"This is a farewell kiss, you dog," al-Zeidi yelled in Arabic as he threw his shoes. "This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq." http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28235031/

I do think it was a violent act, but I also feel as though Bush was in oor form making light of it, whether he knew what he said or not.

Bush must've been a dodge ball champion.
Al-Zaidi is a national hero.He threw his shoes at Bush's head the most hated U.S.president all over the world.Every body knows that bloody dictator of Iraq Saddam was the puppet installed and supported by the WEStern countries specially theU.S.During his 3 decades long dictatorial rule,he mercilessly killed millions of Iraqis inthe eyes of the West specially the U.S.The Western countries and the U.S. helped Saddam to wage war against Iran in which more than a million were killed.where  was Democracy then? From 2003 to 2008 over a million of Iraqis were killed in the hand of the U.S.troops and the terrorists as the price of the U.S. liberating of Iraq from Saddam's dictatorial rule. How funny theU.S. democracy is? Al-zaidi's reaction was quite natural to the chief of the occupiers of his motherland.
If the Iraqies are so free now,why did they haul him off to jail? waterboarding any one?
Like many already commented, I am appauled at the fact that such disrespect would be shown to any world leader, no matter how one personally feels about him/her.  What I am a little more concerned about is the lack of response for the protection of the President after the first shoe flew.  No one moved until the second one was hurled.  If that was a gun, both presidents would have been killed before anyone of the security detail woke up.  Doesn't say much for those who are suppose to protect the President.
ONLY a pair of shoes?  Directed at the man who ordered the INVASION OF THEIR COUNTRY!!!  I suppose the reporters will be subject to the same kind of security screening that we must now endure to fly!!!!
Does Mr. al-Zeidi now have to walk around barefoot? Does no one care about this poor mans feet? I have a nice pair of heavy hiking boots he can have and the next time he meets Bush hopefully his aim will be a little better!
I wish he would have connected on both throws. Bush is an ignorant, redneck war criminal. He dodged those shoes like the cowardly cracker that he is. This idiot actually thinks he did something good for Iraq, by having the US military slaughter innocent civilians, like they're still doing today. May Bush and those who were ignorant enough to vote for him, burn in hell forever. Good riddance. I can't wait for January 20th.
Can you imagine in the future that all journalists get to throw shoes at visiting dignitaries?  Ha!  That would be ...wait for it...Legendary!
I have to agree with most of the posts here.  I disagree with Bush's foreign policy and will be glad when his term ends, but that jerk deliberately tried to cause physical harm to the POTUS. ...would this be as "funny" if had actually caused bloodshed with the shoe?  Will it be "funny" if it happens to Obama in 6 months? ...Would it be as "funny" if he had slipped a gun past security instead?
Arabs who haled this reporter also haled the 911 attacks. He would have been executed in any other Arab country. He is very lucky to be an Iraqi.
1,200,00 dead Iraqi's since the war started. "Bush has done them well".  Yeah way to good Bush! Iraq is so much better off.
Bush should keep the shoes, sell them on Ebay and use the money to bail out the auto makers.
We are better with other enemies rather than calling Iraqis "our friends". Shame on them. How much we, the people of America are sacrificing our precious lives and sending our hard earned tax money to feed then and to live a better life. They do not know the value of freedom; they deserve the hell Sadam Hussain created for them. They proved that Sadam was right person to handle them with iron fist. They have no respect for gentleness and generosity. As an ordinary citizen, I always criticized Mr. Bush `s policies on war but today, as an American citizen I am in grief and anguish beacause of the disrespect, an uncivilized MAD MAN showed towards our President. He did not throw his shoes towards him but towards the people of America. Come out of that country and see them killing each other to go to hell.
Five years ago they were throwing roses. Bush's big mistake was in believing that anyone could turn a primitive, tribal culture (whose entire social structure is entrenched in bribery and corruption), into a first world country.  No good deed goes unpunished!
I feel for the Iraq people and donot blame this reporter. Bush was responsible for thousands of Iraqie people being killed and over 4,000 of our milatary being killed in this terrible war that he caused. We are paying for it now at this time besides. RECESSION!!
Bush is the embarrassment.   20% approval rating and a country full of out of work Americans who would also throw anything they could at this pitiful excuse for a leader.   Guess he needs to fill time while waiting out his term...fiddling while Rome burns seems appropriate
I think the reporter was very immature in his actions.  He needs to realize that the ONLY reason he could even be there is because Bush got rid of Hussein for them.  I'm sure he wouldn't even be a reporter if Hussein were still alive.  Like it or not, Bush did the right thing by going into Iraq.  Hussein was working toward sending nukes to Israel and to US, whether you believe it or not.
This just goes to show how some Iraqi's are UNGRATEFUL BASTARDS for what Bush has done for them by getting rid of Saddam I'll Kill You Hussein who would have had this fellows head CHOPPED off immediately after being tortured.
What a waste of good shoe leather.  Bush is not worth losing the shoes.  Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon should have been forced to duck a few Vietnam shoes.  War sucks, and so do the politicians who get us into them.  We have lost thousands of our brave soldiers because of stupid politicians.

Since we will always have those who throw shoes, maybe we might gather a group of shoe catchers and donate the shoes to the homeless. Size 10 and above are very hard to find. And for many, it's cold outside. So... are you angry? Help the poor! Disagree with respect and honor. Back up your disagreements with kindness towards the weak.
Hey ladies and fellas, after all GWB is still our president. As americans, we should all stand united and support our president when an aggression like this, big or small, is aimed at him regardless of his level of popularity.
You go there and throw a shoe at an Iraqi. I will send the shoe box for your head to come home in. This is such a disrespectful act to them and they cheer when done to our President? Cut off the billions a month and lets leave now. We can go back in after the carnage and get the oil!
When the Shah of Iran got unpopular the US aided the Ayotollah into power, when he found out we gave the shah medical assistance, he took hostages, and we ran to Iraq for help, to...guess who?  Saddam Hussien.  Saddam didn't get to power through brutality, but through our funding, weapons and consent.  Saddam isn't Iraq's criminal, he is OUR criminal.  Don't expect the Iraqi's to to worship us for removing someone we gave the power to oppress in the first place.
Bush and Cheney have done this country a very WRONG.It is too bad that the American people did not stand up to this bunch before they put our country into a down spiral, I do not know if we will ever come out of what they have done to us and the people around the world. It is too bad that they are going to receive a pension from our government for screwing everything up. The shoe toss was a great tribute to all who knew what a crock Bush and Cheney were.
Don't forget lefties the people who cheer the shoe throwing are also fans of video taped beheadings, acid thrown on little girls who are on their way to school, retarded people used as suicide bombings, stonings, etc. In other words some really civilized activities. A good leftie cheers these acts as long as it results in embarassment to George Bush and the US in general. But listen up lefties, if these people were ever to hold sway in this country (and I know you folks feel it could never happen here: see holocaust please for events that coudn't happen)you lefties would be the first to be stoned, beheaded, acid bathed, etc. Although this would be a good comeuppance for you I wouldn't want to see it happen. You folks simply need to snap out of it!
What you aren't getting is that he didn't throw the Shoe at George Bush. He threw it at the President of the United States and at the American people.  Get the big picture!  We are having our sons and husbands die for their freedom.  How dare they insult us and hail him as a hero!
To quote Mike Meyers...Honestly...who throws a shoe??!!
To Sick Of Bush:
If you want to talk about the Economy, you should be throwing your shoe at Barney Frank, Chris Dodd and Maxine Watters!!  Bush warned them several times about the troubles with Fannie and Freddi, but these three idiots along with many other Dems didn't want to do anything about the problems because that were make good money from these shady dealings.  SO GET A LIFE BOZO!!!
Ridiculous! This type of behavior would not be tolerated on US soil. Our president may be whatever anyone thinks of him and while we have freedom of speech, an attack or assault on the president here in the US, lands you in jail. That man cannot excuse his behavior on a free speech premise. Once again, it is despicable that people in other parts of the world think that you can treat people this way just because they do not like what they say or stand for. Let this go and the next shoe is directed at your head. The last time I checked throwing things is not freedom it is aggressive and assaultive behavior. This child in a man's body should be embarassed of his behavior.
I think the Iraqi reporter should get a shoe deal from Nike.  They could be marketed as the new 'Kurdish Keds', or 'Arabian Flights'.  They could design shoes just for throwing and include 'winglets' on them, calling them the 'Mercury'.  The fact that its the god of messages, gives it that extra touch of icing.
I think the new reporter was just mad at the strict airport polices and was taking his shoes off to get his point accross to homeland security. Just joking!
