Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

MUSINA, South Africa – I saw terror in the eyes of the four men from Zimbabwe, although we were separated by three coiled rows of vicious razor-wire.

When they saw me they ran away, away from freedom in South Africa and back to oppressive, diseased, starving Zimbabwe. They thought Paul Goldman, my producer, and I were South African policemen who would jail them.

VIDEO: Life or death decision on the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

We had been driving along the border road between these two countries, hoping to spot refugees fleeing Zimbabwe. Sure enough, after only a few minutes we saw four men crouching in the bushes, just inside South Africa.

They had already snuck under the razor-wire, after a trek though the bush that normally takes several days, with no food or water. But when we stopped our vehicle and stepped out, cameras in hand, they panicked and desperately raced back to the country they had just fled, squeezing back under the wire. In his haste, one man abandoned his small, brown backpack.

I picked it up and waved after them and called out, "It’s OK, we’re just journalists, here’s your bag, you can come back, we don’t want to harm you."

We knew that was true, but they didn’t. What else would a policeman say other than, "It’s OK, come back?" So they stood around uncertainly on the Zimbabwe side of the fence.

One man nervously waved his arms at his side in a gesture of trepidation and helplessness. The others hid in the trees and bush, but we could make them out. It was easy to spot the man in a bright red shirt among the green and brown trees.

I called out again, "Don’t be afraid. This is your chance, come through now before it is too late. We’re just journalists."

They called out "Thank you," but stayed put.

Back to starvation or risk it all
They whispered among each other, uncertain. Behind them was the Zimbabwe army, patrolling their side of the border, looking for refugees just like them. If they were found, they would get arrested, jailed, maybe beaten, maybe even killed in Zimbabwe. The best they could hope for was hunger and starvation. U.N. officials warn that by March, half of Zimbabwe’s population may not have enough to eat.

VIDEO: Cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe

Back in Zimbabwe, they would be exposed to cholera again, which is breaking out in epidemic proportions because sewage pipes are broken and bacteria has reached the drinking water, which often comes out green and smelly. The government has no money or means to fix it. Children play on dirt tracks slick with sewage. They admit to 600 dead from cholera, but the real number, aid agencies say, is more likely in the thousands. And as the rainy season begins this month, the flowing water will spread the disease more. UNICEF is making preparations for 60,000 sick. And neighboring South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana and Zambia fear the disease will hit them too.

So we waited – a standoff. The four men faced a grim choice. Hide in the bushes from us, and risk capture or worse; or trust us, and maybe get captured by the South African police, jailed, and deported back to Zimbabwe.

I called encouragement, and they answered with "Thank You," but they didn’t move. As they wrestled with their dilemma, the solution for us was obvious. We had to abandon our hopes of seeing refugees flee Zimbabwe, and leave, allowing the men their stab at freedom. I said to Paul, "What’s more important, their freedom or our story?"

‘Here, catch’
Before we left, we returned to the car to collect some supplies. At the fence, I laid the man’s back-pack on a stone where they could see it, and I began to toss bottles of water across the fence. "Here, catch," I shouted, and lobbed the first bottle in a high arc, giving them time to spot it as it fell from the sky. "Good catch," I shouted, "OK! Here’s another one." I threw one bottle for each man, and then called out, "And here are some apples and some fruit juice," and I laid them on the back-pack. "Good luck, guys," I shouted, "Good luck!"

They clapped their hands and smiled and called back, "Thank you, thank you sir. God bless you."

Paul and I turned our backs to them, to the razor-wire fence, to the story, and walked back to our vehicle, and drove away. We didn’t stop to film them from afar, or to even see if they crossed. We didn’t want them to think it was a trick, we did not want them to be caught, on their side of the border or on ours. We just left them to their fate, hoping it would be a better one.

An hour later we returned, driving back from our bed and breakfast. We stopped and walked to the boulder where we had left the back-pack, apples and juice and sure enough, it was all gone. We smiled at each other and walked away.

I am Zimbabwean living in South Africa legally. I just want to say to the two journalists: Thank you, Mazvita, Siyabonga. For being kind to my people. Thank you once again.
I applaud the humanitarian gesture, but mightn't it have been better, two decades ago, had journalists, such as yourself, offered some balanced reporting on the situation in what was then Rhodesia (the "Bread Basket of Africa" and one of the more benign places to live for BOTH blacks and whites, despite their quasi-apartheid) instead of villifying the Ian Smith regime and agitating for Mugabe's victory?  Those four men and the millions they represent are the fruit of the journalistic jihad which was declared on Rhodesia and which, in large part, caused the current regime and all its problems.  Now you want us to buy into your sympathy for the victims of your prejudiced reporting?  It takes more than a bottle of fruit juice and an apple, I'm afraid, to atone for your sin...
i totally agree with yehuda, while the world was screaming at the whites for destroying the blacks, and yelling for change ... well you got what you asked for... congratulations.... look at the results of your ignorance and do the same thing now to alleviate the misery you have created. ex s. african living in new zealand.
Gentlemen,
The story you ended up with is one that the world will appreciate a hundred fold more.  We all know what is happening in there, and you gave them what the country has lost the most of in this crisis, hope.

Good job, and you have secured a life long reader.

Nate
To Ryan of Charlotte, NC.:  With due respect, you are quite ignorant, sir.  Rhodesia was never a racist society, and Ian Smith was never a racist.  I grew up there, with black neigbours living next door, going to school with blacks my own age, and my father worked for a black person.  You need to get your history books out and really read about what was going on in the world at that time.  I also recommend you go and do some reading about Robert Mugabe, his history and his education.  Then go back and look at what Ian Smith at the time was telling the OAU, the US and Britain about the consequences of their interference.  The rest of the world, Britain and the US in particular, should have stayed out of Africa back then, but since they didn't, they now have a moral obligation to assist Zimbabwe and to fix the mess they created...before it gets to South Africa. Remember, Zimbabwe is only a stepping stone.  The last thing this world needs is the same mess going on in South Africa, because when that happens, the consequences will be too terrible to contemplate.
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religon too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

I want to reply in relation to the comment you received from Ken Thornhill, Denver CO.  What an idiot we are talking about human suffering here and all you can think of is how the media in your opinion has treated the current president.  It is people like you why the world is in it's current state.  This is not about republicans or democrats or even the state of politics in the USA it is about human suffering, disease and tragedy in another part of the world.  If you cannot say something constructive please don't make a comment.
Thank you for the footage you have shown i wish i could join you and help my fellow brothers and sisters there in the once beautiful and bountiful 'Bread Basket of Arfica' being raised there has just been more then a wonderful experience for me and even though things are not good right now i would if i had the money fly back tomorrow i honestly would........
And who are they that are responsible for the Mugabe and his vicious regime? The same people who are now his critics-America and Britain who did everything in their power to put Mugabe in power and to oust Ian Smith's government-a government of a highly prosperous nation whose Black population thrived! It is those nations that should pay for the evil that they created!
Zimbabwe has brought this horror on themselves with their hate and racism. Back when it was Rhodesia  there where plenty of white farmers to feed everyone. Know that  they have kicked out all the "evil white colonists" they can finally live the lives they fought so hard for.
Kumar, from Barbados:  Look past your own tunnelvision and see these journalists did what was right, leaving the men with food and water and giving them a chance to freedom.  Ignornace in seeing the truth is what keeps your country in such turmoil.
Yea-I forgot to mention that the author attempted to help break South African immigration laws.  I would guess that he may be guilty of an attempted felony, depending on the evidence presented and quite possibly should be tried in a South African court of law.
I am a Zimbabwean living in the United States and it breaks my heart seeing our country in this state. Thanks for your humanity in providing the little you had. what you gave them might be the onl;y food they get in days. This is herat breaking, depressing and just plain wrong.
how do we as fellow inhabitants of this planet earth sit by and watch those less fortunate get ill and die for the lack of clean water and food?  What gain do the leaders of Zim get from a dying population and a barren earth?  How does it come to be that an entire continent, much less a country, ends up mired in upheaval, poverty, greed, starvation and inhuman conditions?  Keep stories like this on the front page, hold a mirror up to those in power.  We all must see!!!
It is far beyond time that Humans, Americans, English, Chinese Japanese Spanish etc all humans take an active part in helping those in Zimbabwe and other places in this world that are starving and dying of desease.  Get the see Bee's to go in and fix the sewer line at least clean water. We need to stop fighting each other and fight the Governments that are killing their own people and lining their own pockets.  Race, Religion non of that makes a difference, these are humans who need our help, wake up selfish people and lets pay back, we have much compared to those who have nothing,  God Bless
Zimbabwe needs to be taken over by a multinational force and Mugabe overthrown. The United States and Great Britain need to change their hands off attitude towards the suffering people of Zimbabwe. Condemnation of the regime is not enough!  Counting on the African Union to force Mugabe to step down is a hope that will never materialize, simply because other cronies just like Mugabe are holding on to power in other countries and are reluctant to speak up.  Either by direct action via a UN mandated occupation of the country or covert action via an army coup, Mugabe needs to be overthrown.  Time is running out for millions of people in Zimbabwe. The world cannot afford another genocide (like Rwanda 1994) in Africa while the great powers (US and GB) stand aside and watch.

Great job guys; you saved lives.  You kept them from a terrible fate.
GOD BLESS YOU FOR YOUR GOOD DEED!!

Unfortunately replacing Zimbabwe's apartheid government with a black racist government hasn't worked out very well for the people of Zimbabwe.

Stealing the land and businesses from the whites and Asians and giving it to Mugabe flunkies has destroyed the county.

I hope every politician that spewed hate against the Smith administration is proud of what they have accomplished.
First off, well done story and action.  You offered to help the four men and they were, understandably, reluctant to trust anyone they ran into.  Realizing that, you left them the only help you could and let them go about their business instead of drawing more attention to them.  I think that most of us would like to help those in need, and under ideal situations and conditions, would do so.  I've read some comments about fixing America first, and I do agree.  We have to strengthen ourselves before we can really provide strength to others.  I don't think it's a very difficult task to accomplish if people get behind the idea.  I've also read many posts throwing out labels like 'marxiist' and 'socialist' when describing the idea of helping your fellow man.  I defy you to tell give me a real downside to helping out one another, other than the occasional person who takes without paying it forward.  The type of person who resists the idea of giving of one's self for fear of not having.  I believe that's why those labels are thrown out in the first place.  Relax guys.  No one is saying we should foolishly squander our resources to the undeserving, but don't be so afraid to offer a hand to those who are in need.  That's what we do for our families.  Let's just expand the family a little.
Compassion for all the huddled masses in the third world contries of this universe, BUT, the main thing they need is BIRTH-CONTROL to ease the strain on their enviroment and make their lives better.

George Bush was and is wrong, wrong, wrong.
Yes, the people of Zimbabwe fought a revolution to place Robert Mugabe in power.  They got what they wanted, destroyed it and are now moving en mass to South Africa to rob, rape and steal from what has been built there. (yes its happening) Please show me an African success story and I will show you a 2 dollar note.  South Africa will be the next counrty handing out the begging bowl when that system is also destroyed
I believe the saying goes, "Be carefull what you ask for, you just might get it". The ruling government was tossed out for this!?? I guess they wanted "Change"
Humanity before media coverage...great story, but better even better is the sense of human compassion!
Dozens down and one to go. Within 20 years this story will be about South Africa. The process of taking land from the white farmers has already begun. The soon to be new president, Zuma, is just another Mugabe.
they murdered and robbed the white land owners and supported the redistribution of the land and farms now they have run them into ruin and want everyone else to bail them out ,they made their bed let them lay in it
The inaction of those capable of helping will leave us judged. While children die of disease we sit in our warm offices wondering what we will eat for lunch. If you doubt that action is needed look at your child tonight at the dinner table and ask yourself if your child is expendable... and what you would be willing to give up to save your child if they were sick. Ignorance is the root of this evil.
As a South African, I feel an overwhelming sense of loss, not only for the people of Zimbabwe, but for the continent of Africa. How could this continent be so rich in natural resources yet is largely being left behind. Someone, please do something. The government of Zimbabwe needs to take care of its people and should step down if they can't ( not that Mugabe would, he needs to be kicked out) I sincerely hope that Mr. Fletcher would use his journalistic credentials to force western governments to step in and do something, those people are on their own and really need help.
People Please!!!!  The people who make up the NEW WORLD ORDER know exactly what they're doing.  Read your Bibles and learn your history!. Henry Kissinger said "If you want a Country you control the oil, if you want the world you control the food," I hope the good Lord blesses me with time to see them take Iran and Syria which is their next move for world control; I do hope that they are aware that the ETERNAL FATHER is not a Maugabe!
There is no oil in Zimbabwe. There is no oil in Darfur.  Where there is no oil there is no aid.

There are millions of people looking for/needing the basics food, water, and shelter.  But no one cares.  It is easy to become judgemental but why not get involved and call your govt representatives and demand something be done.  Try and find how you can do something constructive.

This Christmas/Holiday season remember those that are less fortunate in our own country and around the world as we open or wii's and x-boxes when there are those who will not eat tonight.

Granted though wrong decisions some have brought it on themselves but the children haven't.

Having lived in Rhodesia during the late 70's it astonishes to me how quickly this beautiful and fertile country has gone to hell. Mugabe and the other Criminals in power have an awful lot to answer for.
I read a lot of postings that seek to assign blame to one group or another.  It would seen that the groups who threw out the "white devils" have proven themselves to be far worse. More corrupt, more brutal and certainly more stupid and short-sighted.  I wonder how many of the "liberated" would happily return to the days when Zimbabwe was the breadbasket of Africa and everyone had food on their table, even if it meant a return to white rule?  Sometimes the devil you know is a lot better than the devil you don't.
Thank you so much for this story.I cried when I read about what is happening to my fellow countrymen.May God bless you for the gift of water and food that you gave them.
Always a Rhodesian-Zimbabwean... You are absolutely right.
Ryan of Charlotte, NC.is typical of those who understand little or nothing of Rhodesia.
My Family was farmers living and working just south of Salisbury. I can tell you they had one of the most productive farms which was subsequently Stolen by Mugabe and given to a person who knew zero about the land. That farm has not produced anything since. My Family now live and farm in a grateful Australia
While we are all entitled to our opinions (and afforded the right to air them), however skewed, racist, self-righteous etc. they may be, the bottom line here is that Fletcher's account of his encounter with the 4 Zimbabweans tells the truth about what is happening in that country. That truth, and the extent to which the situation has degenerated is finally coming out. Mugabe is rotten and Zimbabweans have suffered enough because of him. Don't blame history, don't blame the West,, don't blame Africans, or even the Zimbabweans. Mugabe must go, and we must help Zimbabwe recover.
Trully GREAT reporting!  Reporters who understand when to walk away from a story for the sake of preserving human dignity and human valor are few! -- In my book this is a much greater story than the one you set out to accomplish.  Congratulations!  You deserve a Special Mention.
In the book The Covenant by James A. Michener, he recounts the torture Robert Mugabe went through during aparthied - it was awful - how can he turn around and submit his own people to such terror? Has he gone mad in the fashion of his ancestors, Chaka Zulu, among others?
You did get your story, and you made the right decision not risk someones life to get it. The news media sometimes does not realize the damage they can cause in selling a story, or the power of persuassion they have.
Reading this article and the comments, I feel so helpless.  Yes, I know these problems are world wide and all I can do is pray to god that things will get better.God bless you
Mr. Fletcher,
You did the right thing and should be applauded for it. However, you seem to be singing your own praise here. Tell their story first, and then we'll judge who the heroes are.
We need to stop encouraging "feel good" stories like this where they literaly throw bottles of water at what we see as problems.  In reality this story is about the symptoms related to the root problem.

And when we go in to solve the problem, either we are seen as the ugly Americans (see Iraq) or the solution causes much bigger problems (overpopulation and corruption in third world countries).

Ultimately, we can't help these people until they accept they need a REAL long term solution.  Until then we can only watch and wait for them to come to such a realization.
This is to Ryan of Charlotte: What planet are you from ? When the country was known as Rhodesia the farms flourished, people had law & order, they had lots of food, self sufficient. Granted, racism had no place there or anywhere but to say they are now better off is COMPLETELY Ridiculous.
Dear Mr. Fletcher, so nice.  I wonder why you and the rest of the liberal media do not do a similar story on the minority (white farmers) in South Africa that are killed daily in brutal ways by black South AFricans and illegal immigrants from Zimbabwe.  Oh, sorry -my bad, that is politically incorrect, right?  Biased journalists like yourself are responsible for this mess in the first place.  God help us!
Until Mugabe and his party is deposed, gross poverty, inflation, mismanagement, death and disease will continue to prevail and spread in a nation where prosperity and a land of plenty once existed.
Who cares we have enough problems in the United States
Thats great that you turned your eyes from some one breaking a law could there be a reason why South Africa does not want millions of people storming across there border. So if and when these men rob, kill or rape some one will you be there to report on it or will that be ok to maybe you could help by giving them a gun or holding her down think about it.
The people running zimbabwe know what they are doing.  They know that printing money as fast as possible will increase inflation causing panic and mass histeria, along with hunger and disease.  They know that hurtng the population with scare tactics and human rights violations will make the population look like a welfare case. They know all this in order to get international aid.  Money, its all about money.  The problems will not stop until Mugabe is dead and a democratic government with a functional constitution is written. Same for North Korea.
Great story. You did the admirable thing and that's important. You got a better, truly humanized story too.
This is the kind of story worth reading.
Jim Oas
This story tells the story probably better than any other way you could have told it....Riveting....Thank you for telling it..
