Terror at the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

MUSINA, South Africa – I saw terror in the eyes of the four men from Zimbabwe, although we were separated by three coiled rows of vicious razor-wire.

When they saw me they ran away, away from freedom in South Africa and back to oppressive, diseased, starving Zimbabwe. They thought Paul Goldman, my producer, and I were South African policemen who would jail them.

VIDEO: Life or death decision on the Zimbabwe-South Africa border

We had been driving along the border road between these two countries, hoping to spot refugees fleeing Zimbabwe. Sure enough, after only a few minutes we saw four men crouching in the bushes, just inside South Africa.

They had already snuck under the razor-wire, after a trek though the bush that normally takes several days, with no food or water. But when we stopped our vehicle and stepped out, cameras in hand, they panicked and desperately raced back to the country they had just fled, squeezing back under the wire. In his haste, one man abandoned his small, brown backpack.

I picked it up and waved after them and called out, "It’s OK, we’re just journalists, here’s your bag, you can come back, we don’t want to harm you."

We knew that was true, but they didn’t. What else would a policeman say other than, "It’s OK, come back?" So they stood around uncertainly on the Zimbabwe side of the fence.

One man nervously waved his arms at his side in a gesture of trepidation and helplessness. The others hid in the trees and bush, but we could make them out. It was easy to spot the man in a bright red shirt among the green and brown trees.

I called out again, "Don’t be afraid. This is your chance, come through now before it is too late. We’re just journalists."

They called out "Thank you," but stayed put.

Back to starvation or risk it all
They whispered among each other, uncertain. Behind them was the Zimbabwe army, patrolling their side of the border, looking for refugees just like them. If they were found, they would get arrested, jailed, maybe beaten, maybe even killed in Zimbabwe. The best they could hope for was hunger and starvation. U.N. officials warn that by March, half of Zimbabwe’s population may not have enough to eat.

VIDEO: Cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe

Back in Zimbabwe, they would be exposed to cholera again, which is breaking out in epidemic proportions because sewage pipes are broken and bacteria has reached the drinking water, which often comes out green and smelly. The government has no money or means to fix it. Children play on dirt tracks slick with sewage. They admit to 600 dead from cholera, but the real number, aid agencies say, is more likely in the thousands. And as the rainy season begins this month, the flowing water will spread the disease more. UNICEF is making preparations for 60,000 sick. And neighboring South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana and Zambia fear the disease will hit them too.

So we waited – a standoff. The four men faced a grim choice. Hide in the bushes from us, and risk capture or worse; or trust us, and maybe get captured by the South African police, jailed, and deported back to Zimbabwe.

I called encouragement, and they answered with "Thank You," but they didn’t move. As they wrestled with their dilemma, the solution for us was obvious. We had to abandon our hopes of seeing refugees flee Zimbabwe, and leave, allowing the men their stab at freedom. I said to Paul, "What’s more important, their freedom or our story?"

‘Here, catch’
Before we left, we returned to the car to collect some supplies. At the fence, I laid the man’s back-pack on a stone where they could see it, and I began to toss bottles of water across the fence. "Here, catch," I shouted, and lobbed the first bottle in a high arc, giving them time to spot it as it fell from the sky. "Good catch," I shouted, "OK! Here’s another one." I threw one bottle for each man, and then called out, "And here are some apples and some fruit juice," and I laid them on the back-pack. "Good luck, guys," I shouted, "Good luck!"

They clapped their hands and smiled and called back, "Thank you, thank you sir. God bless you."

Paul and I turned our backs to them, to the razor-wire fence, to the story, and walked back to our vehicle, and drove away. We didn’t stop to film them from afar, or to even see if they crossed. We didn’t want them to think it was a trick, we did not want them to be caught, on their side of the border or on ours. We just left them to their fate, hoping it would be a better one.

An hour later we returned, driving back from our bed and breakfast. We stopped and walked to the boulder where we had left the back-pack, apples and juice and sure enough, it was all gone. We smiled at each other and walked away.

Great. Good Job guys. Nice Story.
Thank you for doing the right thing by just moving on.  Your gift of water and food was a blessing.
May God bless you in return.
Dear Mr. Fletcher - Bless you all for your humanity.  In this country most people can not begin to understand the living hell and inhumanity that humans are put through by other humans.  My hope is that when Obama becomes president (though his first priority of course is America) he will not forget the world's suffering and will lead other countries to join in helping.
I think it is sad that anybody on this planet should have to go through anything like this. People open your eyes. It shouldn't and doesn't have to be like this. Everything you see is government related. They're all in on it together. I'm sure there are some of you out there that know exactly what I'm talking about. There isn't anybody on this planet that should have to go without. Read! Research! People we need to "know too much". Don't let them win.
Maybe the news media should have been focusing on the AFrican disaster for the past 6 years instead of trying to find the President of the United States guilty of something? About time! This is old news and many other countries are in similar situations. What's it gonna take to get the news media to cover the catastrophie that has been occuring for years and get the Democrats to do something about it other than complain about Republicans? btw: I am a democrat and voted along party lines... so I can talk.
Well done for doing the job of caring for the suffering stranger first, and your job as journalist second. God will reward you all.
This story is so close to my heart as I have been to Zimbabwe 2 times on mission trips and I saw first hand how hard this is for the people to live. Thank you for doing the right thing. These precious people are desparate.
tht was a very dangerous act that you guys pulled.  a story over four guys life?
never the less, u did recieve a story in the end.  Well at least u dont suffer from tunnel vision.
I wonder what the South African government, and people, think of Mr. Fletcher, a foreigner, encouraging people to enter their country illegally and possibly bringing along cholera as well.
Mr. Fletcher,

I appreicate your reporting on NBC.  I hope that you will push the NBC news organization to champion the cause of the Zimbabwean people.  I was there in 2006 and know first hand the plight of this country.  The world needs to sit up and take notice of the sad, sad state of affairs there.  Thank you for going down there and caring as you did.  The world needs your advocacy.
Reading this article and the comments, I feel so helpless.  Yes, I know these problems are world wide and all I can do is send my meager resources to agencies I hope and trust will help.  Governments are corrupt, always have been, always will be, and our vote seems to make no difference.  I'll keep praying for these people and when possible do what I can.
the LORD is our saviour he will rescue us all who know him,our church has been helping this country for years, and jesus will be stronger in that country by the second. the corrupt polititions will pay for thier ways
Nice jester but why not do it in New Orleans, Texas, Hills of Kentucky and let us not forget New York City?
We have tons of children and adults starving here in the US. Cant we take care of them first?.We have people still out of homes in New Orleans. Living in trailers of on the streets. Are we ever going to get them taken care of?
What is happening in Zimbabwe is a tragedy.  However, the US and British governments will do nothing to stop Mugabe because Zimbabwe has nothing of value to them.  Mugabe will be allowed to continue on as he is - the African Hitler, and the rest of the world will look the other way.  What most people don't understand is.....as Zimbabwe goes, so goes South Africa.  This is what Ian Smith warned the US and British governments about years ago when they started interfering in African politics.  Zimbabwe is just the precursor to what is going to happen in South Africa in about 5 - 10 years, and once South Africa falls, the mineral wealth (gold, diamonds, uranium etc), ports and shipping lanes will all be under the control of countries like China and North Korea. Mandela was smart enough to know this, and that is why he did not follow a path of "anti white" when he came to power in South Africa. Mugabe is not Mandela - never was, never will be, and because most westerners don't understand what is really at stake here, they are not doing anything about it.
Why is it that people think that its okay for the people from Zimbabwee to cross into South Africa seeking food and safety but yet come back to the USA and have problems with people doing that very same thing from Mexico to come to the USA.  Most dont understand that the illgeal immigrants that are in THIS country are here because without it they and their families (extended families including) would starve, be killed, or simply die from harsh conditions.  Something for everyone to think about...
You treat these men as though they are wild game you're trying to catch on camera. Leave them alone. I visited the country recently and did not see any of the violence that was being mentioned in the media outside of Zimbabwe. And the people I met with and spoke to had more animosity towards the UK, Europe and the US for the sanctions that have caused hardships for them. The sanctions may be on the businesses run and owned by goverment officials but they hurt the rest of the country as well. In the meantime the companies that are doing well in Zimbabwe are American and British owned companies. Even British Airways after convincing other airlines not to fly to Zimbabwe was itself flying to the country till last year and is still doing so using an airline their control that flies in Africa alone. So why should these people trust the west. Start asking serious questions and don't believe every person that doesn't like their leaders. Why is it that the world wants to address the economic problems and collapsing infrastructure of Zimbabwe but not address the sanctions by the west that are the real reason for the problems. It's easy for you to blame Mugabe, but none of you have ever been in his shoes or the thousands of Zimbabweans who lost loved ones under colonial rule as well as fighting for their freedom. No one gave the western world the responsibility of Afica. Leave the African people to handle their matters. They do not like western interferance because through experience they know the west cannot be trusted. By the way not every country wants to have a political system like America's or England's. One can only imagine how the American people would feel if there were other countries that were more powerful that would choose to impose santions on this country because a few people had left and complained that they didn't like President Bush as some have been doing. Just as much as you don't like other countries interfering in your state affairs, so do other countries despise western interferance especially African countries.
Wow, look what Marxsim and Black Majority rule has done for a former thriving country (Rhodesia) now Zimbabe.
Well, at least those poor Zimbabweans don't have to live under the old racist regime of Rhodesia.  Things were much worse then, weren't they?  Thank goodness Robert Mugabe overthrew the old white supremacist government and brought in a new era of freedom and prosperity for all Zimbabweans!
I want to thank you guys for giving the world a "window" from where we can see the otherwise unseen. It is such a great reminder of what actually takes place in this world.  Thank You.
Let's not forget Zimbabwe was prosperous as Rhodesia. The blacks threw out and tortured the white professionals and farmers to leave. They created their own mess - let them fix it!
Wow!  On behalf of the poor, discouraged, down trodden, abused, neglected, mistreated, and oppressed, I offer thanks.
Hello Mr. Fletcher: First of all on behalf of all who go through what you witnessed first hand, thank you and God bless you and your companions.  You did the  humane thing, and its a wonderful thing to read that not all the media have an eye only on the main chance.  There are so many other countries on this planet, where its citizens are treated as less than human beings.  We need to remember that as bad as we may think we have it here in the America, with the economy the way it is, its nothing compared to what's happening in South Africa and other third world nations.  We're in the 21st century, but you wouldn't know it when you see what's going on around that part of the globe.  I hope we all pray that our new President-elect will have the patience, strength and perseverence it will take to start to turn things around.  Meeting and talking with the people who want to make a change, is the only way it will ever happen.  Thank you for not putting your story before the value of a human life.
It's a rare thing to read a story that you know is so real, frought with despair and tragedy, and yet still smile at the end of it. A small bit of humanity can spread like wild fire. Nice story, lets hope the four men continue to have good luck and make something resembling a life for themselves in South Africa.
China supplies zimbabwe with weapons but thank god its kinda landlock where other countries not allowing china to supplies government with weapons like they do in sudan and many other evil nation. China likes trade deals with bad nations reguardless specially ones who do this to their own people.
People say usa and other governments wont help this country fight its dictactor but how can we even get un vote when russia and china always block a secruity council vote on these countries because they  have weapons trade with these horrible nationis. Blame russia and china for always blocking UN vote to do somthing.
I think it is great that you helped those people. Something needs to be done about the situation in Zimbabwe. And to those who try to detract from this story. I don't see how they are at fault for helping people along the road to freedom
What does it take for powerful countries like USA,Britain and Germany to bring down a dictator like Robert Mugabe! Targeted sacntions have failed. In fact Bob das redirected these to the innocent citizens-through lack- hunger and desease-now cholera, torture and mass murder, repressive laws.

Iam  a Zimbabwean myself. We are one of the most educated Africans on the continent and very disciplined too. No wonder why there is no rebelion, nor mutiny in Zim.All this education is wasted away through deaths as people succumb to hunger and desease! Is this the reason why we went to school. For the sake of protecting your legacy and the English language which is official in Zim, Brown and Bush/Obama please act swiftly to send the Hitler incernate either back to the cemetery to far afield to China where he is beloved.

English is our official language and there is no need to deny a reality conceived out of history! Should you comment from Backingham palace and White house whilst the Russians and the Chinese are spreading their influence into Zim! Do something. We cherish democracy, capitalism and its tenets. Please do something before our vision is lost to Mugabe's angels of death and repression.
Mugabe is an a$$#%&*. He is ashamed of leaving now. Its just a pity that the Zimbabwean citizens themselves have no liver to force the tyrant out through mass protest.
I'm sure the U.S. is doing all it can short of sending troops to Harare.  As an American citizen, I don't feel it's America's job to clean up the world-including Zimbabwe.  Where is the African Union in all this?  Besides, even if America sent in troops, the world would condemn us for using violence.  This is an African matter for the Africans to handle themselves if they want change.
Martin you did a truly honorable act. I have been on the South African / Zimbabwe border at Beit Bridge one of the main entrances / exits into each country so am familiar with where you were.

The tragedy of Zimbabwe in the last 10 years is sickening and now the country is on the verge of total collapse. The best alternative I now believe is to forcefully remove Mr. Mugabe who has single handedly with the Zanu PF destroyed the country and made its wonderful people slaves to his dictatorship.

I am a strong believer that the country can be turned around and that the Zimbabwean people can with Western and local African assistance evolve into a great African nation again.

Thank you for helping 4 men escape the tyranny of Zimbabwe I hope one day they can return to their families and enjoy their country.
Thank you so much. God bless you. I am an asylee here in the USA. I came from Zimbabwe.

Every day I thank God that I live in freedom, joy and peace in this very blessed land. I am thankful to all the people of this wonderful land and the government  for taking me and my children in.  God bless America.

Of course, I worry about my fellow Zimbabweans who are suffering so much. I pray for them to as blessed as I have been.

Thank you.

I'd prefer a little more of the story behind the story and a little less self aggrandizement.  I get the feeling these poor wretches served only as a prop to report your own magnanimity.  It’s not about you Martin; try to remember that when you are back in your bed-and-breakfast.
Good job guys.  Now for some reporting on the real world crisis...over population of our planet by humans.  Thank god the US administration of "just say no" to sex is being shooed out the door...and good ridence!
this brought tears to my eyes. People shouldn't have to live like this. I am lucky to have left Zimbabwe this could have been me! They are human, they are my brothers, my sisters and uncles. We need more media coverage on this to force change.
Mr Fletcher, thank you for doing what you could to help who you could at that particular moment in time.
A great example of how we should think first about how the things we do affect others. Putting the me in the story before your job was the best humanitarian gesture you could have possibly made.  It shows you are willing to walk away from a great story in an effort to preserve the life of a suffering people.
Nice story, I don't know if I would of risked my life for a story like this. Sure it is very importand but people know about this, and if they don't they simply don't care. It would be like risking your life to report that it is going to rain tomorrow. I must say though great job and thanks for doing it.
How is it that black africans always seemed to generate outrage and find means to overthrow the so-called opressive white "regimes", and yet become so helpless when it comes to doing the same to black ones? The Thornhill's of the world who say "something should be done" need to take a look at the history of Africa and tell us all how he suggests it "should be done". I doubt he could even point out Zimbabwe on a map. We've all had a good example of "nation building" from his Republican friends in the White House over the last 6 years!
People are paying their electricity bills in eggs and corn now.  Money means nothing.  6 year old children look like they are 4 years old due to the terrible nutitional deprivation.  They are starving and the world sits mute.  Since Hitler we have seen genocide after genocide, where is the United Nations?
When Zimbabwe was once the country of Rhodesia run by educated white farmers and it was the bread basket of Africa. After the current leader took over he began redistributing the land. That means he seized white owned farms, broke them up and gave them to black citizens in a naked bid for power. The new owners know nothing about farming or anything else so food production has failed and famine has replaced it. Nothing will save them and we should not try.
Isn't that what everyone normally does, ignore the genecide in africa, they think it will go away in the meantime millions perish
I it is hard to think about the suffering Zimbaweans are going through. But i am proud to be a zambian coz in our country  we have in times of trouble kept refugees fron Dr Congo, Angola, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Uganda and as far as Sudan, Chad and Nigeria in the dictators time. Tanazaniz, Zambia and Malawi has sacrificed for the good of the continent but it is a suprise to find how South Africans who were the most oppressed in the sothern region of africa quicl
kly foggeting that it was the support of the likes of Zambia that their last president and many of them survived in Zambia on the taxpayers money, because we knew they were our brothers. Let them extend a hand now that they are doing well. One good turn deserves another.
I feel the need to say something... I was there for 3 months about 10 years ago in the the good days.. I could tell things were slipping then. at one time they were exporting food untell they took the land away from the farmers and broke it up and gave the land a little chunk to many and then the couldnt feed them selves. people who had no idea how to farm. i felt that trouble was soon to follow. much like our own country now wants to spread the wealth... soon we wont have any one with the ability to hire people and so we may go down the same path but in a different method.. Government greed is the true evil. We atill have the ability to stop  this  and the ability to help africa. but we need to really open our eyes and vote and put the right people in power. We need to watch what our leaders are doing and continuly voice our openions..Zimbabwe is a truely Beautyful country and a kind and gentle people....with a wicked and ruthless leader.
LET'S LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE.  ZIMBABWE IS A SOVERIEN NATION PROTECTED BY THE UN CHARTER.  MUCH AS MUGABE IS A THUG AND MURDERER, THE US, BRITAIN AND OTHERS ARE HELPLESS TO GET RID OF HIM.  SADDAM HUSSEIN WAS JUST AS RUTHLESS, AND THE US TOOK INCREDIBLE HEAT WHEN WE TOOK HIM OUT.  SECONDLY, WHAT ABOUT THE PEOPLE OF ZIMBABWE STANDING UP FOR THEMSELVES?  AS THE UN AND ALL THE LEFT WING LOONS IN THE WORLD LOVE TO SHOUT, THE US CAN'T AND SHOULDN'T BE THE MORAL COMPASS OF THE ENTIRE WORLD.  I HAVE GREAT SYMPATHY FOR THESE PEOPLE, BUT THEY HAVE TO CHANGE THINGS THEMSELVES.  SEND MUGABEE MONEY TO FEND OFF STARVATIN AND DISEASE WILL ONLY GO TO SUPPOR THIS REGIME, AND NOT TO HELP THE PEOPLE WHO NEED IT.  THE ANSWER IS CLEAR, THE UN NEEDS TO STOP BEING A FECKLESS THIRD WORLD DOMINATED DISASTER AND START ACTUALLY TRYING TO HELP PEOPLE INSTEAD OF THEMSELVES.  SHORT OF THAT, THESE DISASTERS WILL NEVER CEASE.
I am glad I read this article and found a true journalist with ethics all in one article. Way to go!
I am certain if you could have done even more you probably would have. Blessings to you.
Basic human kindness won out over the basic human nature of greed and ego to get the best story.

May you carry this feeling of goodness in your heart the rest of your life knowing that you perfomed a simple but life changing act of kindness. I will remember it for a long time.  God bless you both.
As a Zimbabwean, thank you, people can blog, but it is easy to sit here with food in our bellys and a house over our head.  Things in Zimbabwe are dire with unemployment at about 90% and those people who do work get paid into their bank accounts and can't draw the money out.  My sister as a teacher earns US$20 a month, but most workers work for a couple of dollars a month, enough to buy 4 loaves of bread, if it is available.  Understand this, THERE IS NO FOOD ON THE SHELVES, not a can of beans, fruit etc, NOTHING.  Our president was voted out and refuses to go, where is America's fight for democracy now?  Africa has ignored our plight as has the rest of the world and anyone who says anything "disappears".  Whole villages have been murdered.  Perhaps if South Africa stood up to Mugabe years ago instead of a failing "quiet diplomacy" they wouldn't now be invaded with illegal immigrants and cholera.  Serves the government right for supporting a tyrant. Pol Pot and Saddam Hussein could have learned a lot from Robert Mugabe.  Is it any wonder that crossing the border is so tempting.
The right king could turn that country around in 8 months. Unfortunately no such person exists.
I am an ex pat South African, now living in Canada, For years the international community placed embargo's and extreme pressure for the Zim government to give over the reigns to the population majority, Under Ian Smith, people had jobs, food and homes , but nobody saw this, they where frothing at the mouth, trying to purge the White's for "enslaving" the black population.  Today 1/2 the population is dying from aids and the other 1/2 from starvation. It is so sad to see the progression from a beautiful rich country to a pity-full starving place, and nobody cares at all. Where are all the people that clamoured for change, that supported war on the white regime.
What you did (to get your SELF SERVING STORY)or more to the point, what you tried to do was totally ILLEGAL. Would you try and encourage a PALISTINIAN to find REFUGE in "APARTHEID" ISRAEL...or possibly encourage a MEXICAL illegal to find the land of milk and honey here in the United States. I am from South Africa, hold dual citizenship, and abhor what you have "proudly" announced......encourageing refugees to break all the laws pertaining to South Africa and Zimbabwe. YOU STINK....
