Germans hail Obama’s ‘historic’ victory

MAINZ, Germany – As soon as Barack Obama’s presidential victory was confirmed, German media outlets cheered what they hoped would be a big change from the Bush years.

"America – risen from ruins," said the headline on the Web site of Germany's national newspaper, Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

"Historic victory for Obama. America has shown: everything is possible," Germany's mass-circulation BILD newspaper exclaimed online.

Election enthusiasm
Interest in this year's U.S. election was exceptionally high in Germany, with millions of viewers staying up all night to watch election coverage.

While only a small number of visitors trickled in at German election night parties in 2004, more than 2,000 people alone attended a party organized by the U.S. Embassy on Tuesday night, just one of several events that took place in the German capital.

Obama won over a lot of the German public when he visited last summer.

"Obama is a very charismatic man, we were already impressed by his visit earlier this year," said one young German at the embassy event who had also been among the crowd of an estimated 200,000 people at Obama’s speech in Berlin last July.

Media coverage of his victory was effusive, almost over the top.

"Here are images from an election that has changed America, yes, will maybe even change the world," said Peter Frey, the Berlin bureau chief of German broadcaster ZDF and host of the station's all-night election coverage, as he introduced a report on the U.S. election.

Almost apologetically, the moderator of ZDF's breakfast show told viewers that they had not tried to select only pro-Obama soundbites, but in fact, they weren’t able to find any people on the street who didn’t applaud Obama's victory.

Gracious concession
Despite the extensive focus on the election winner, Sen. John McCain also earned the respect of reporters in Germany and was described as a noble rival after he gave his concession speech, in which he promised support for Obama.

"A very respectable man," said ZDF anchorman and former Washington correspondent Steffen Seibert.

"McCain appeared as a fair loser. It seems he made a real mistake when choosing Sarah Palin as his running mate," a reporter on the RTL channel said. "He  was a candidate who failed to enthuse the masses and as a consequence, lacked the financial means for his campaign."

Yet, in the midst of all the euphoric reactions, experts warned that expectations among Europeans for Obama might be too high.

"Obama will not be an easy partner. Why should he? But he will be a partner who we will approach and who will approach us," said Karsten Voigt, the coordinator of German-American Cooperation in Germany’s Foreign Office.

I am pleased with the outlook and the effect that this election has had not only in the US but also the world. While I do have expectations and understand that not all things are possible- the feeling that I have right now, which I CAN trust- is positive and makes me believe that we can-  As Mankind, as a team. I am pleased that the Germans have intelligence and understand that decisions that this country has made are not the beliefs of the select few.
Its surprising to me that the 'man on the street' in countries outside the US cares about who the US President is... Personally I have little idea who the current leaders of most other nations are.

I guess it's like the joke, If someone who speaks three languages is Trilingual, and someone who speaks two languages is Bilingual, what do you call someone who only knows one language? An American.
THE NEW GENERATION OF THE GERMAN PEOPLE PROVES THAT EVIL IN POLITICS IS A THING OF THE PAST THEIR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY. THEIR SINCERE FEELINGS OF THE ALL WORLD AS ONE IS RECOGNISED, WITH THE GERMAN PEOPLE BELIEVING IN THEIR HEARTS THAT NO GERMAN POLITICIAN IS GOING TO "FOOL" THEM NO MORE !
GERMANY, YOU ARE GREAT AGAIN ! AND THIS MESSAGE IS WRITTEN FROM A FRENCH BORN MAN WHO LIVES IN THE USA ... VIVE L'ALLEMAGNE !
I truly believe that Barack Obama was born to lead.  He has us all excited because the majority of us are so very tired of war.  We are tired of the road that the Bush Administration has had us on for so long with the economy.  President Bush has been for himself for the past 8 years.  President-elect Obama is for the people.  We feel it.  We know it.  We are grateful for it.
Not only does America have support from Europa but support from half the middle east!!!!! Finally some unifiaction in the world and optimism among global leader.Another chance to repair the tattered relationship of the Bush era. This election alone has been more achieving than the last 7 years of war on terror. Obama has the chance to erase the bad memories of the worst president in U.S. history and possibly Obama has the chance to change the world !!! Jus after 9/11 the most of the world sided with and sympathized with America. The free world had our back and Bush pissed it all away. Obama being africn/american,worldly educated,an intellectual, reasoning man,and jus not your ordinary D.C. politican makes America more diplomatically approchable and a beacon of change. I am a Blackfeet Native American and i voted for Obmama and i pray to the Creater that he will bless him, make him strong, bless his family and that he will bring the World together for the 1st time in human history.
p.s. the only thing that can derail that dream that goal is racist conservatives/Republicans
I FEEL THIS IS GONNA BE CALLED "THE ERA OF REASONING AND UNIFACTION"
Ya it was great to see Obama win.
Obama is a worldwide leader that America can be proud of selecting as President.  Intelligence, Vision, and yes, Style, is something the U.S.A. has lacked in one President since JFK.  I am thrilled to have voted him in, and anxiously await the 70 days unitll his inauguration.  Please forgive us World, for the last 8 years of Cowboy diplomacy.  It is time we worked together for the planet's good.  Peace on Earth, Goodwill toward Men!
The USA is still the dream for most people, but the dream has turned into a nightmare in the last 8 years. With the election of Obama, the USA is perceived again as the land of democray, freedom and possibilities. And a charismatic leader that can lead the free world...the Germans, like many other nations, would like to have this type of leader!
I won't have to pretend to be Canadian the next time I'm in Germany.
Germans also poured into the streets and celebrated Micheal Jackson when he came to Berlin. None of them cared that he hung his baby over the balcony or that he was being investigated for molesting children.

I watched a documentary on German TV the other night and not 1 person on the street could name any of Obama's policies or what they would mean to Germany. Simply that he was good. They are so excited about him because of his pop-star like personality cult and not because of what he will do
As an American I am simply stunned by the positive reaction all over the world.  It is such an incredible feeling and immensely humbling.  It is such a nice change already that one thing since Bush did so much to tarnish our name all over the world. But I also worry about President Obama because so many people in America and the all over the world are expecting so many things from him. Maybe it's the spirit of the world that will make it happen and it's Obama who won't stand in the way and that will be how he can do it.  But it's not realistic to expect him alone to just make the world a better place everywhere. I fear he, we as Americans together with him, won't live up to expectations.  It is a great gift we've been given...another chance by the world to see America as the land of opportunity where good for the world can come from...I just hope we can make some good things happen internationally so that the respect shown to us is earned.  Thanks to the world for being so good to us...again.
lack money is this means all it takes is somone with most money and media backing you wins??? not to mention all black voters voted for obama good or bad they wanted him in because they always vote for black candidate over a white one. Color first country second to them. I have no beef with obama I am sure he make fine president but I hope he make america appease russia like europeans do and in russia alot of xenophobic attacks happening by youths from moscow youth thing reminds me of the hitler youth. They too attack anyone not their race. president of russia will step down in 2009 and redo consitiution so putin can come back for even longer term??? sounds like dicatatorship and putin the one going around bring nationalism calling for hatred towards the west they even deployed missles on poland border angered by anti missle shield which is defense not offensive but its okay for russia to give IRan defense systems design shoot down jets and give other countries that hate america higher tech weapons. Thats okay when russia does it but when we give europa defense shield they only mad because they wont be able to bully europe no more thats why and russia been bullying europe too long. They will invade ukraine eventually and this all looks too familair like rise of nazi germany same path they took russia will take. even back then europe appease nazi germany and that got no where and now they appeaseing russia and it seems history will repeat itself and russia will be more dangerous than soviets was because its not communism this time its a form of russian nazism that says hate everyone for your own mistakes. Under putin alot of jouneralist been killed who are not working with state and alot of X KGB agents poisoned in britian and other places. Putin is devil and a dictator like bush but bush leaves office putin doesnt and the russian so brainwashed by propaganda they defend this evil sob
