Obama’s former school cheers his win

JAKARTA, Indonesia –  They were dancing in the rain in the school yard when Barack Obama's victory was announced – scores of children from the Menteng Elementary School in Central Jakarta, where Obama studied for two years during his four years as a child in Indonesia.

"He's so smart, so smart," said one little boy.

"He's made our school famous," said a young girl, as the children crowded round a large projector to watch Obama's acceptance speech in Chicago.

Students display a picture of U.S. President-elect Barack Obama and react to the announcement of his victory, at his former school in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Few of them understood much of what the president-elect said, but still they cheered, taking their cue from the American crowd.

The headmaster took a call from the Indonesian president, congratulating him, while old classmates, who'd set up a fan club for the boy they all knew as "Barry," could hardly believe the news.

"I am speechless. So proud, and so happy that he has achieved what he set out to do," said Rully Dasaad, the club's coordinator, as he bounced between press interviews.

Adopted as a native son
Obama only spent a brief period in Indonesia, where his mother moved with his Indonesian step-father when he was six years old, but he is regarded almost as a native son. And the fact he has risen from such modest beginnings to become president of the United States has captured this country’s imagination.

"It's unbelievable," said Wimar Witoeler, a political commentator and former presidential spokesman. "It shows how America can be an engine of inspiration and change."

SLIDESHOW: World reacts to Obama's victory
Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim country, and the image of America took a real battering here during the Bush years.

"Now I see America is still a good country," Wimar told me. "A country you can trust, a country that can change within itself."

Indonesia has not always been a comfortable place to be an American abroad. Two Bali bombs and an attack on the Marriott Hotel were among the terrorist attacks that targeted Westerners in recent years.

However, some believe that Obama’s election may diminish some of the terror threat.

"Obama is popular here, so I think Americans will become more popular than in the last eight years," said James Castle, a prominent and long-standing American businessman in Jakarta, who was in the Marriott coffee shop when the hotel was struck in 2003. He survived without injury.

VIDEO: Indonesians celebrate Obama's victory

To many of Indonesia's business and political elite, the global economic crisis provides a good reason for the United States to reassert the moral and political leadership that they believe has been lacking in recent years.

"Barack will have to put America's own house in order, then assume leadership of the world," said H.S. Dillon, a senior government adviser. "The world's adrift. It needs a leader."

Yeah, right!  Obama's just gonna whip the US back into shape and then turn his efforts onto the world as the almighty leader of the entire world.  Sounds prtty scarry to me.  End of times kind of scarry.
all ive seen since Obama get elected is reports of Muslims celebrating a man that claimed he isnt one.
I think the world is making him out to ba a liar on that point.
Yesterday, a report from Afganistan quoted an offical as saying that Obamas Father is Muslim so Obama will like the Muslims..
Makes you wonder just how much else we will find out when the rest of the world joins in.
I bet it wont be long before Obama is labeled The Muslim President" by the Muslim world.
so, where are all the hate-mongers who claimed that the school obama attended in indonesia was a madrassa?  where are they now?  to the uninformed, a madrassa is a school exclusively for boys, absolutely, positively no girls allowed.  just look at the picture.
how wonderful that obama is inspiring children in indonesia. where is the reporting on the fact that for obama to attend school in indonesia he had to be an indonesian citizen.  indonesia did not allow for dual citizenship at the time which means obama's u.s. citizenship had to be surrendered.  for obama to become a citizen of the united states again he would have had to go through immigration.  hence he would not be eligble to run for or hold the office of presidency in the united states as per our constitution.
He has shown us hope. I am positive that he will not let us down, "WE REALLY NEED CHANGE"- change for the best and for all the mankind!!!
Seems they have to approve these messages first.  Doesn't seem like too many make it through unless they are pro-Obama.  They only let an occassional anti-obama post through when its mild and to add some perceived balance.
We are in trouble....  Sure its fine that Jakata people are happy, but I am going to wait an see how much tax revenue Obama generates with his tax hikes.  I bet tax revenue is going to go down and not up like he is hoping.  He is not going to be able to follow thru on the 4 trillion in new spending that he promised because the revenue wont be there.  Hopefully he wont be as irresponsible as Bush when it comes to spending.
Obama cannot achieve the challenging task that's ahead on his own. We must put an end to pestimism and take the path which leads to optimism. Be positive. Believe in ourselves. United as a nation we'll stand and divided as we are we'll fall. Let's all unite together to achieve the unthinkable one more time...
For the first time in many years I feel hopeful that America can have a positive influence on the world. It is very important that we talk with both or friends and enemies around the world. President Obama may be able to open many closed doors to previous American presidents.
I look forward to a different type of politics in the years ahead.
This is very good news. This story and other news items from around the world have shown us how much the world admires the United States of America and how much they despise bush. Good luck and God bless you President Obama.
On the "Morning Joe" show yesterday, Joe Scarborough passionately criticized an article that basically explained how America has finally lived up to its reputation with this election.  Joe's argument was that no one (especially the elite media) lauded the voters (notably evangelists) for standing in long lines to vote in 2004 for Bush because it wasn't "their guy"; that some even criticized the one-sided turn out and downplayed its impact.  I am all for passion, but not when it breeds division and is based on misguided emotions.  No one's "guy" should encorage that type of passion.  I think even some of those voters would now agree that a lot of the 2004 fervor was based on hi-jacked emotions and non genuine promises.  This article is a good example of what "real" and genuine impact looks like and hopefully gives Joe or others like him the cognitive-dissonance jolt they need to question whether they are as open-minded as they think they are.
The muslim dominated countries rejoice because they see hope for world dominace beginning. The blacks rejoice because they see this as an end to predijuce and the lifting of their people from their self imposed "suppression". The hispanics see this as a chance for them to escape the poverty and oppression in their own countries to come to this counrty and start a new life regardless of immigration status (many other groups included in this catagory). The reality of it is, this marks the begining of an end to America. Our once great county will be overrun with so many people looking to get free money, health care, and housing that the people that actually work for a job will be so oppressed by taxes we will find it impossible to live without having second jobs just in order to sustain a median way of life. There will be more corruption in govenment as a result of the socialistic views and laws that will be put into place by the democratic party that controlls all branches of the government starting next year. Obama's "Robin Hood" plan for the economy will never work, it didn't work for Robin Hood then and it certainly won't work in todays global economy. The govenment, under the leadership of the democrats, will take away more of our ever diminshing freedoms as promised to use by the forefathers of this county. He will change this county, but will we like the changes???? Will the rest of the world like his changes after 4 years??? I pray that all of you who voted for this man to keep track of the changes that he makes so that you can find out just how little America (or our allies) matter to him and then the next time you can change your vote to the Republican side so we can maybe begin the process of regaining 4 lost years of going backwards in this country. Granted Bush hasn't done everything right but maybe the Republican president will do it better!
The fact that Obama happens to be African-American, and happens to have a father who is Muslim, and even if he is Muslim, that doesn't mean that he might have the same ideals as the rest of the "BAD" muslims of the world. NOT all muslim people are bad, and not all muslims are extremists. Barack Obama was elected as president because of his inteligence, because he insipired hope and change, and most centainly because people saw that he was the best candidate. His religion, his color of skin, and his family background had and should have nothing to do with the fact that he was the best candidate for the presidency.

Also, people should look beyond the color of Obama's skin color, beyond his family background, and beyond the nature of his name; people should look at him like the rest of the nation did, for his inteligence, his personality, his ideas, and especially for the person that he is. After 8 years of having a retard for a president, most people might agree that anyone is better than the last we had.
President Elect Obama has had many influences that greatly affected his life. Black genetics from his African Father, White Genetics from mother and raised by, for the most part his Kansas grandparents.  So, what makes up Mr. Obama. It is not his skin color, not just his Kansas Grand-parents up bringing, college experiences, or Chicago his days.  It is all the above.  If you can look through the skin color of the man and then you see an American, pure and simple.
Thank God we finally have a sane man in the white house again.  Even the Republicans went sour on Bush, just as they are now sour on Obama as I see in these blogs.  To the hateful Republicans I say to you that the only ones you have to blame is yourselves.  You voted that idiot in not once, but twice, all the while swallowing the dogma that ended up dragging this country down not only economically, but in world opinion as well.  Who needs the world you say?  Well, unless your oil comes from your back yard and your clothes, and assuming you wish to keep allies so that you have staging areas for your military, uhm, you do.

A day all generation afte generation will remember.  A moment that innovated United States of America inspired and emerged unity image. When Senator J.McChin, the election not giving up fighter had Congratuated the 44th USA elected President Barack . H. Obama, to sincerely express and call on his supporters to work together after all for the welfare and prosperity of Amerian Children collectively, putting back any differences that might have been in-acted.

No doubt that having a black African American to undertake with his expected cabinet members, within that well known sad history gives one thing; which reflects a unique, genuine, global and real value of democratic practices.  The world did not sleep at that time, simply because the campaign was typical trend of change that Obama, the USA President has set  it as an example of unity and strengthe in diversified nation.

Africa, is quite proud for its origin descended son, who got much care, matured and true mother, grand mother and grandfather to bear this nations fruit to face not only American challenges for change but also to conserve the same for other thirsty world for it.

All are now overwelmed, from the expressed view points world wide. American youth with that tolerated spirit to run ballot competition race can make alot of difference to make the world learn and dream for better future, despte major difficulty to achieve much of that dreams.
I believe that President Elect Obama had to go through some things before he got to this position.  You see before he was born his destiny was already written and like great leaders before him he will encourage a nation.  It is not because he is a black man because he is not nor is he a white man but he is Muliticultural man.  A man of many cultures, a man of the new milinuem a race of one.  He stands not just for the black or white but for all men.  It is so refreshing to see such fire, vigor, hope in one person who has inspired millions not just here in America but across the world it has renewed my faith in mankind in general.  It has been such a long time since anyone has seen or felt such hope and promise in any country.  I pray that God gives him the strength and courage to carry out his mission and to achieve such excellence that the world has never seen.  I believe he can and will do this if everyone gives a helping hand.
For 8 LONG years, we have suffered under Bush's administration and his polarizing rhetoric. The absolute hatred toward Obama, and the LIES people continue to circulate are astounding! Here is a man who wants to bring America back to what it was founded as..a nation of the people, by the people, for the people. Other nations are breathing a sigh of
relief that they won't be the next "axis of evil".
Barack is the epitome of quiet and deliberate contemplation. The lad with the fierce but subtle intelligence. The embodiment of prudent determination and character. The world is richly blessed by his being. My faith in the human race has been rejuvenated by the election of this illustrious son.
The world rejoices that America will once again be guided by liberty, equality, fraternity and goodwill.
"CONGRATULATIONS" TO BARACK OBAMA & JOE BIDEN
for all of the people who don't and won't accept him as the president of the UNITED STATES,thats okay, the rest of us had a problem with the Bush people also.. afterall, have you checked your 401k lately? been to the gas station for a fill up? or have you noticed we are fighting in Iraq and Afganistan?... it to seems you are quick to find fault with a man who just got elected by the majority of Americans to fix up the mess the previous "experienced"," white" office holder has put America into.. at least wait until he messes up before complaining, after all you gave the last guy 8 years and you didn't say a word.... Yes, the whole world has hope for him, because we could see clearly America was on the wrong path to hold itself up as an example for anybody, let alone for itself...if you don't believe this, check the stock market reports....
Some of you people need to get a life. Obama won.over and out. And those of you from the south I hope you get over the civil war. If you voted Repub in 2000 and 2004, then you voted for a liar, a person who went AWOL,a friend of the rich/corprate America, a person who has bankrupted this nation, etc, etc.We were highly disliked and discredited overseas by this present administration and its policies. McCain was more of the McSame. Obama attends a Christian church and he is a Muslim? McCain does not attend church but he is a Christian? People here send their kids to Catholic schools cuz they think that they are better. In Indonesia it is the same, and having been to Indonesia many times for lengthy periods, they held us in low esteem because of our government policies. When Indonesians get to know an American, they will judge the person by the person not his /her country. It is about time we have a President who is concerned with the majority of this nation not the extremists, religious right, corporations, the rich 2% , and how the world views us in and out.
To Patti and Khoury,

The process of naturalization in Indonesia takes a really long time (it's like tens of years), and it was practically impossible for Obama. In no way he could become an Indonesian citizen if he only had an Indonesian stepfather. Indonesia doesn't recognize adoptive child from foreign countries as a citizen. Even any child born to Indonesian couple abroad wasn't recognized as a citizen until recently.

Indonesian public schools allow any legal residents to be their students.

You could've easily known these things by asking any Indonesian.
I'm happy for Obama; but I'm not so sure if this is good for the country. So far so good... If McCain was elected, I think some people would have taken it extremely racial and possible riots in various parts of the US. Let's just hope he serves a good term and gears a fenomenal focus to our economy and well being of all AMERICANS. Congratulations to Obama!
Electing Senator Obama is not about healing every rift or solving every problem our nation and the world has; it is, however, about changing the energy and the spirit of the nation toward a more universal point of view.  There is a sense that some on the right engage in the same rhetoric that extreme Muslims hold--the rhetoric that says we are involved in a Holy War and not a war of nations with conflicting interests.  It is much more complicated than anyone with definite opinions understands. We have to navigate treacherous waters while extending our hands to all people.  President-elect Obama understands this.  We cannot always look for pat answers to complicated questions and we cannot view our role in the World as that of competitor in a football game--we are talking about the lives of human beings.  We need to focus on creating harmony and peace so that people have the opportunity to develop moral rigor and a deep conviction about what is right and just for everyone, not just those who believe a certain way, or those that fall under certain categories.
Thanks God and we hope to see America as a friendly country as before and as a good friend for rest of the world and to see as a good leader to solve the problems what are happening and destroying mankind. Hope God will help Obama to be a leader of that. Thanks American people to select a person whom they can belive and can keep faith for a change. Be happy American people and aslo be happy the rest of the world's people !
How can someone who has done NOTHING yet be hailed as a savior????????????????????????????????
To all of you "Proud" bloggers...remember the old saying, "Pride comes before a fall".  Only time will tell.
good luck to the most transforming man in the history of the world
While I think it's very encouraging that there are so many people who are enthusiastic about our new President Elect, I want to caution people to remember that he is still a human being, as flawed and as fallible as the rest of us.  Don't rest all of your hopes on one man -- it's up to each of us as individuals to make a difference for ourselves and our country.  That said, I'm certainly looking forward to the real possibility of the U.S. recovering the prestige on the worldwide level that our leaders have squandered over the last 8 years.

To those who are obsessed with digging up any imagined negative details of Obama's past and his upbringing -- get over it.  Judge the man by what he does going forward, not by the propaganda and misinformation spread by the ignorant, the malicious, or those with their own political or racist agendas.  Open your eyes, people, and do your own research.  Don't trust every piece of information you stumble across on the Internet.
I live in Canada and have been following the election in the U.S.A. Iam so very proud of President elect BARRACK OBAMA. He has inspired several nations around the world. I admire his intellectual acuity, determination, his charisma and most important his strategic manner in which his campaign was carried out. I do not expect him to fullfil all of his promises all at once  for two reasons: 1. He is human and 2. There is always unforeseen detours in the best laid plans of which sometimes you have very little or no control over but simply do the best. If people are expecting all his promises to be realized in such a short time period then I need to welcome them to the real world. I AM ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE THAT PRESIDENT BARRACK OBAMA IS DTEREMINED TO FULLFIL ALL OF HIS CAMPAGIN PROMISES TO THE PEOPLE WHO SUPPORTED HIM AND ALSO TO THE COUNTRY U.S.A HE LOVES BECAUSE ALL THE WORLD WILL BE WATCHING HIM NOT TO MENTION THE FEW WHO DID NOT THINK HE WOULD BE SUCCESSFUL. WHAT AN INSPIRATIONAL, SUCCESS STORY. mAY GOD BLESS HIM AND BE HIS GUIDE THROUGH THESE TRYING TIMES AND THE FUTURE ONES TOO. NOW WE ALL NEED TO KEEP HIM SAFE TO DO HIS JOB.

JUDY FORTUNE, CANADA.
I find it very curious that I have sent two messages, one pro Obama and one anti Obama.  What a surprise the pro Obama message appeared even though I sent it LONG after the anti Obama comment which has yet to appear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the first time I've read a blog on MSN that actually allowed people who didn't agree with Obama even shown.  Kudos to MSN (althought it's a little late. . . however, it still doesn't tell us and doesn't prove whether or not Obama is an American citizen or not.  Why isn't the media asking him to prove it the same way they did McCain when they asked him where he was born?  He proved it with a certified document.  I'm thankful this country has overlooked its prejudice and is willing to vote in a man or woman without regard to their color;  however I do think it's overlooked some very serious questions as to who this man really is and what his agenda is.  Sorry folks but if you think he can make money appear so that we all can have health care, think again!  It's time to look to our God and ask him for forgiveness for the sin we've allowed into our country.  We used to be a great nation . . . now we're just like all the rest.  If you want God to bless America, don't focus on a man, look to God.  That's who will get us out of all this mess . . . not Obama and not McCain.
I think Obama is so popular because of the contrast with George W Bush. People are so eager for a new order and Obama represents that. I suspect that if Obama had run immediately after Bill Clinton, there would have not been this much interest!
It's really a shame that Obama's detractors can't see he's a unifier. He appeals to all people in his country and outside his country. I'm glad his election inspires confidence in America. The last 8 years were horrendous and the President of the United States is a world leader no matter what his name may be.
Can we please stop believing all the conspiracy theories out there on the Internet? I am a white American woman married to an Indonesian man, who spent a number of years living in Indonesia with our children. Obama's mother was an executive in Jakarta with the influential U.S. nonprofit organization the Ford Foundation, and his stepfather was well-positioned in government. Nobody in the Indonesian government was going to insist that Obama become an Indonesian citizen, or that he give up his U.S. citizenship. I doubt the question was ever raised when he enrolled in school. His mother would never have given up his American citizenship -- how else did he travel back to the U.S. to visit and later live with his grandparents? He used an American passport to do that, duh. And my kids, born in Pennsylvania, have birth certificates that say only the county they were born in, and the date. Nothing about weight or length or doctor. If you believe everything on the Internet you believe that people are being abducted daily by aliens.
What is this love hate stuff. He won a majoity of the popular votes, and the electoral College. In a fair fight. He's our President. If other counties and other cultures like him how can that be a bad thing. Give him a chance
As a Turks & Caicos Islander, I am proud to say congratulations to Barack Obama on his victory as President of the U.S.A., I know that you will do a good job, because you're very intelligent and the world needs you.  May god be with you in all your endeavours.
I am born canadian. I cannot believe some of the comments you, non supportors of Mr. Obama are saying. Do you really want PEACE in the world and everyone treated the same.If you people are christian in anyway, you should believe in equal ooprtunity, not jugging when you do not even understand. As adults,I feel sorry for your children, who are going to grow up racist,or passing judgement on people they do not even want to know. Thats too bad, this is 2008,
I know, I will not let my children growup, with such closed minds, I encourgage, them to be friendly with whatever nationality, thats in our country and others.
I am soo happy that Mr. Obama won this election.
I am proud of the US for letting this good man an opportunity to help the us become more civil, and everyone join together as one instead of against each other. To do good things for your country. I do not have any doubt, he will make a difference.
I wish him the best for him and his family.
Obama is not a messiah, 4 years will be not enough to clean up all these mess, we need more years and more Obama in manny years coming, i call all energetic people to work hard to turn this beautifull world in better home, Obama need still, your support to fullfill his promises.I believe everyone whith positive faith, can, yes he can, yes she can, as Obama did.
We needed someone that could change the way the world viewed America.  We were viewed as bullies and had lost a lot of respect from other nations.  I hope Obama being elected can get the respect back from the world and bring the people in American together. We all have to stay motivated and each one of us should make an effort to make each day better than the last.
No wonder Obama became president. Studying in Indonesia which has a common sense educational approach, and with its non-existent racism towards Blacks, his true potential came out in its full force.
I know this as I too was brought up in South East Asia, and have studied and taught in Elementary school there. Their educational system, which was taught to them by the British, and was adapted to suit the South East Asia mindset, is one America can adopt for its minorities. From what I have seen of the American educational system is a subtle discrimination towards the Blacks and other minorities. If a child doesn’t get the grounding needed in elementary school, that child will never, ever be able to proceed successfully.
The Indonesians being Muslims consider all Muslims as brothers. The Indonesians have the people of Java who look rather like the Black person, and they therefore show no discrimination towards them.

As a soldier serving in Iraq, I can say that I will go to war for my President any day.  However, the U.S. cannot stand alone.  We need someone who can at least talk with our enemies.  Just because we do not like them doesn't mean they are not there. We cannot ignore them.  I voted for President Bush in 2004 and, I also decided that if I was to support him, I would join the Army and serve him.  It is not cool to vote for someone and let someone else go to war (ie."let someone do their dirty business").  I will also say that I hope he doesn't pull us out of here quickly.  We are doing good here in Iraq and things are in the right track.  The people here still need some of us around.  Remember Iran is next door.  Most soldiers do not agree with being pulled-out of Iraq however, we agree that they need us in Afghanistan. Don't pull us out and mess up what we have accomplished.  Do it, but do it intelligently and over time.  The U.S. is the world leader, if you don't believe that, then go outside the U.S. to more than just one country.  Look at how our stock market is crashing everyone else's.  We have lost some of our power but, hopefully we can regain it by seeking allies and acknowledging the importance of the muslim world and the rest of the world.
I have recently returned to the US, before the election, from traveling on the island of Java, an Indonesian island where the population is 97% Muslim.  Many of my fellow Americans will be surprised to hear that I was treated only with warmth and kindness.  Mind you, I announced to all that I was from NYC and as an Irish Catholic, I'm as white as Casper the Ghost.
Barak Obama does not share the background or history of African Americans. He has no direct ties to slavery in America. He has no direct ties to the civil rights movement in America. He looks at all this from the outside-in. He could'nt be further from our African American History. It is not fare to compare him to past black leaders. His background is so diverse. He is one of a kind.  His upbringing, world knowledge, and world views do not coincide with most because his understanding, of the human race, is broader than anybody who has only ever lived confined to the borders of this country.
It is much more than an ease at heart, knowing that Obama is ready to take the United states of America to a whole new level. His speech made many of us cried and this will never be forgotten. Many came into the "political race" and gave up, unlike him.  He have showed us all that everyting is possible if u believe and you can go anywhere in life no matter your race, beliefs, or backgrounds. I cannot imagin that Obama has not only made impact in great lands such as Asia, Europe, Afghanistan and Africa but also in the Caribbean. Everyone is sooooooo pleased and applaud Obama for his great accomplishment. Good luck to "you" Obama in your upcoming years in your reign of America's president. God Bless you and your beautiful family forever.
Are you all listening to yourselves?  "The world needs a leader"...he'll make the US a "beacon of light"..."President of the world"?  You're all coming dangerously close to elevating this man to the status of a deity, or at least a false idol, both of which are blasphemous.  He is a man...one man.  Let's see what he can do before we start elevating him to the status of the world's saviour.  Calm down, sit back, and see what happens.
Let's remember, he's barely served a couple days and he's not a god or savior, just a politician. Also lets remember he's half White (European American), yet all I've seen is the phrase African American President. Lets keep it real people and steer clear of political correctness.
Umm...does anyone seriously think it's a good thing if all these countries are supporting Obama? I guess when it comes to talking to all of them great, but there are way too many shady countries praising Obama, and my gut tells me that that is a very very very bad thing!!! Jakarta is a scary place with some of their extremists, not good they are praising Obama!
Any professional should understand how important it is that countries around the world view and celebrate the election of Senator Obama as President of the United States of America.  We live in a global community.  Progress has ben made in America. It was not long ago that a now "young black professional" would not have been considered even a man ,but part of a slave owners property.  Progress can be made around the world.  It is a "GOOD thing" when good wins over bad, and when love wins over hate. Senator Obama is good. God bless him and the U.S.A.
