Obama’s former school cheers his win

JAKARTA, Indonesia –  They were dancing in the rain in the school yard when Barack Obama's victory was announced – scores of children from the Menteng Elementary School in Central Jakarta, where Obama studied for two years during his four years as a child in Indonesia.

"He's so smart, so smart," said one little boy.

"He's made our school famous," said a young girl, as the children crowded round a large projector to watch Obama's acceptance speech in Chicago.

Students display a picture of U.S. President-elect Barack Obama and react to the announcement of his victory, at his former school in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Few of them understood much of what the president-elect said, but still they cheered, taking their cue from the American crowd.

The headmaster took a call from the Indonesian president, congratulating him, while old classmates, who'd set up a fan club for the boy they all knew as "Barry," could hardly believe the news.

"I am speechless. So proud, and so happy that he has achieved what he set out to do," said Rully Dasaad, the club's coordinator, as he bounced between press interviews.

Adopted as a native son
Obama only spent a brief period in Indonesia, where his mother moved with his Indonesian step-father when he was six years old, but he is regarded almost as a native son. And the fact he has risen from such modest beginnings to become president of the United States has captured this country’s imagination.

"It's unbelievable," said Wimar Witoeler, a political commentator and former presidential spokesman. "It shows how America can be an engine of inspiration and change."

SLIDESHOW: World reacts to Obama's victory
Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim country, and the image of America took a real battering here during the Bush years.

"Now I see America is still a good country," Wimar told me. "A country you can trust, a country that can change within itself."

Indonesia has not always been a comfortable place to be an American abroad. Two Bali bombs and an attack on the Marriott Hotel were among the terrorist attacks that targeted Westerners in recent years.

However, some believe that Obama’s election may diminish some of the terror threat.

"Obama is popular here, so I think Americans will become more popular than in the last eight years," said James Castle, a prominent and long-standing American businessman in Jakarta, who was in the Marriott coffee shop when the hotel was struck in 2003. He survived without injury.

VIDEO: Indonesians celebrate Obama's victory

To many of Indonesia's business and political elite, the global economic crisis provides a good reason for the United States to reassert the moral and political leadership that they believe has been lacking in recent years.

"Barack will have to put America's own house in order, then assume leadership of the world," said H.S. Dillon, a senior government adviser. "The world's adrift. It needs a leader."

i think the world needs to put it's problems behind and pray that things will be better now i concradulate the choice of president and pray people put aside their differences and let the man try
Well let's just see what Obama will accomplish in the eyes of his countrymen and the world. We should hope he does not become an embarrassment and may indeed change the USA for the better and not just for the sake of change
Congratulations to Obama
the american economy has to grow and ultimately the indian economy has to grow.  cooperation between us and india should come strong as they are the big two democracy in the world.
WELL, HE IS OFF TO A GOOD START (THE START OF BREAKING EVERY PROMISE HE MADE ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAI; THAT IS). THE APPOINTMENT OF THE MOST PARTISAN, LIBERAL IN WASHINGTON AND A WASHINGTON INSIDER IS THE FIRST PROMISE HE HAS BROKEN. AND TO ALL OF YOU WHO PUT THIS MAN IN OFFICE- DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH WAITING FOR YOUR CHECK TAKEN OUT SOMEONE ELSES INCOME.
I'll decline to participate since your site practices the most blatant form of censorship in this country.
At least they are learning world history - something our country has lacked in teaching students.  But, leadership of the world seems a bit much.
Black leaders have been around since recorded time, you would think he was the only one - not just one of many.
He has yet to prove if he is a great leader or just one of many not so good black leaders.
I would like to see more articles and information on how other countries, both governments and general populations, view the outcome of this election and what they think it might mean.
It is so wonderful. I feel proud to be an American, and lucky too, that Mr. Obama is our president. I also feel safer, more than I did under the Bush administration.  Obama has touched so many people in the far corners of the earth....Indonesia and Kenya and now the US. I believe that he will continue to do so, and indeed become a leader for the whole world. Never forgetting that the world is made up of people, not corporations. I believe that the time will come when he will be admired and emulated by all.

If the rest of the world thinks they are happy Bush is on his way out they should stop and think how happy Americans must be.  We had to live in the country he was president of . White  Union Craftsman in my 50's Not a Joe the plumber
Good Luck Barry Soetoro and President-Elect
Barrack Obama. As Indonesian living in US, I am deeply proud and touch of the elevation of an
African American who lived in my country for a short time to be the next President of USA.

I hope that President Ob ama will heal and
improve the relationship between our two countries

God bless you Barry Soetoro

Hi, I stand proud as a Bahamian most importantly I stand proud of my skin color.  Not only in Indonesia stand proud people off the accomplishments of Barack Obama but here in the Bahamas WE ALL are proud of him.  We as a nation have came together in cheers and support for Barack Obama and WE know that with a stronger alliance system, Obama will make this world a safer place to live in.
It’s a pleasure that I can see an African American President in the United State of America. God is good to us and everyone too.
it is wonderful to see that obama has inspired children from around the world.  but i have one issue. obama attended school in indonesia at a tiem that indonesia was at war.  the laws there stated any child attending school in indonesia at that time had to be an indonesian citizen.  indonesia did not allow dual citizenships at that time.  so my question i: when was obama's american citizenship relinquished and more importantly when was it reinstated.  ther is no record of either event that has been revealed to the american public.
Barak Obama is a great leader with powerful imagination brain,I think he will do good for Muslim's country.

So let me get this right....the same indonesians we sent millions in aid to after the tsunami hated america then....but now that we elected one of their own they love us?

I guess you can't buy love with money and food, but it appears it can be bought with an election.

I guess they will still wear the Osama T-shirts but at least now they will be worn next to the Obama T-shirts.

Now that would be a picture worth a million words.
Does his popularity seem alittle weird to anyone else beside me?  I can't help but feel uneasy when the messege is "The world's adrift.  It needs a leader." and implies that Barack Obama is that leader/"saviour"!!!!!!!
we are very proud Obama Become Prsident. We had three
votes from our family. America need a Major change, in Economy, our children"s future, Health Insurance.
we all should pray for his health and his family, so he could serve Americans better than the Bush.God Bless all.
It is truly amazing that the success of one man can affect so many people in so many lands.  The election of Barack Obama is the most inspiration thing that has happened in my lifetime.  He gives hope to so many people, many of whom had not dared to dream of a better life.
AS A SIERRA LEONEAN,I BELIEVE THAT ELECTING BARACK OBAMA AS THE LEADER OF THE MOST POWERFUL NATION IN THE WORLD HAS ACTUALLY BRING ABOUT LASTING PEACE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.ALL THOSE WHO THINK THAT IT WILL BE DIFFICULT FOR HIM  TO SUCCEED ARE ALL LYING CAUSE ALL WORLD LEADERS ARE READY TO WORK WITH HIM,EVEN THE TERRORIST ORGANISATIONS WILL CALM ALL THEIR ACTIONS AND BELIEVE IN OBAMA IN SOLVING WHAT EVER PROBLEMS THEY HAVE WITH OUTSIDERS.HAIL OBAMA,CAUSE HE WILL HAS TO RULE THE AS A GOD SENT PERSON AND THE ALMIGHTY ALLAH WILL SURELY GIVE HIM THE POWER TO SUCCEED IN HIS TERM OF OFFICE.
wish obama was in Indonesia and not usa
"Few of them understood much of what the president-elect said, but still they cheered, taking their cue from the American crowd."

Hmm...sounds alot like the Obama supporters. No one pays attention to what he says, they just want the 'feel good' speeches, they want to hear what they want to hear. 'Hope' and 'Change' and 'Yes We Can' and 'We Are All Americans' -- this is all the public heard, it's all the public wanted to hear.
Hope Obama won't be Jimmy Carter, popular outside the US but never fully understood in his own country.

Also clearly the school he went to back in Indonesia wasn't a madrasah as some skeptics have suggested. Hint, a madrasah girls wear head scarfs.
Obama needs to produce his birth certificate he mentioned that he carried in his book.On the internet i copied a 3 page artical that says Obama was born in Kenya and adopted in Indonisia.I have plan on making more copies and send them to news papers in every state. The birth certificate that Obama was franticaly waving in Hawaii was one that was printed on the computer. It was not a vault copy that is filed in the court house of the city where you were born,The one Obama was wavind did not teel where he was born, name of hospital, doctors name, his weight and length. That is what is recorded on every birth certificatHe nedds to produce the one he mencionednin his book.Obama was born in KEMYAAND ADOPTED<GET THAT ADOPTED IN INDOENESIA.
There are several variables in Obama's life that would make his election a catalyst to obtain world peace, unity and economic prosperity.Such variables are his mixed racial background; his rag to riches story; his intelligence and his international background and appeal.OLU. SANGODEYI
"Obama only spent a brief period in Indonesia, where his mother moved with his Indonesian step-father when he was six years old, but he is regarded almost as a native son. And the fact he has risen from such modest beginnings to become president of the United States has captured this country’s imagination."

Obama is a "native son".  He was adopted by his stepfather and became a citizen of Indonesia.  He could only attend school if he was a CITIZEN.  Indonesia does not recognize dual citizen and Obama never reestablished his citizenship.  HE IS NOT AN AMERICAN CITIZEN AND IS NOT ELIGIBLE TO BE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.
I'm wondering how you can be an American citizen after giving up your citizenship to live in a foreign, Muslim nation. There must be some loophole that only those with money or in power know about.
If we are asking who is the only citizen of the world? the answer is Obama, why? imagine! his father is from Africa, his mother is a white American, his step father is Indonesian, his step sister' husband is vietnamese who used to live in Malaysia moving to Canada now living in Hawaii.  Obama is a name of the city in Japan. Barack in arabic means bless and in Indonesia means barokah "may God Bless You Mubarok"!!!! Barack Obama, You are the citizen of the Globe, love you. You are the inspiration for poweless people to be himself/herself!!! Greaaaaaaaaaaaaat!!!!!
I am a young black professional and fail to understand why so much emphasis is put on what other countries are doing to celebrate this election.  Under the Bush administration tens of millions of dollars were sent to Indonesia for support, aid and relief and they showed no appreciation whatsoever.  Now we suddenly care what they think?  Why?  Is it because a Muslim community supports our President elect?  That's supposed to be a GOOD thing?
How true is the last sentence: 'The world is adrift. It needs a leader.' We need a leader who has The Leader as his Leader. The Leader is the Son of God Who alone can help lead the world to a future of Hope.
omg im starting to like President Oboma?
I agree. Obama is going to change the world in a very positive way.
America has for the 1st time in our history stood up and responded as the beacon of HOPE she has always said she was!!!!  I am so proud of this country and the hope that springs new with in her!!!!  This is the proof that America is a land for all people to become what ever they aspire to become now we as Americans can dream!!!!
we love u obama.
wish you all the best
work hard and try to change the world.
The world loves Obama and we, Brazilians ,too
I do not belong to any party but I voted for OBAMA. I voted for the country not the party or person. He is intelligent. He is smart. He is young and he will bring change per his motto. In fact change is already showing not only in America but in the whole world and America will prosper. Long live America. Long live Obama.
Give me a break!!! Leader of the world?!
Let him lead America first and see if he can fulfill all of his  campaign promises before we make him God-like.

African American became US president but we need the same for Africa
I can't express how good it makes me feel that Jarkata residents are happy.
It is so gratifying to see the whole world celebrating the election of a new American president.  Barack Obama will bring back the reputation of America worldwide that has been so trashed by the arrogant ignorant duo currently stinking up the White House!

I just hope the ignorant evangelical christian lunatic fringe don't seize upon this euphoria for Obama in the Muslim world as proof that he's a secret Muslim.  The Muslims are just relieved that they we didn't put another clueless religious nutcase into office.
I as a 59 year old white American am so proud of what the American people have done this week. We can now start to bring this country back to the moral standards the world has always expected. No more will we be as hated as we have been in the past 8 years. Today it feels great to be an American...
people still dazed about the victory. obama started out telling a tale in the speech he made when john kerry was nominated.he continued this tale of his when it became his own time.the tale is a journey, and the journey has just begun.Obama respects his friends and he keeps them in his heart...in his acceptance speech at the DCN he mentioned names of those he saw as mentors, he mentioned hillary rodham clinton as an inspiration to many Americans and to his daughters.this goes along way to show his dept of respect and love for his friends.Obama got to where he is now as aresult of journeying with the people. the secrete is GOD! i believe OBAMA was the dream Martin Luther saw.
Assume leadership of the world? The world's adrift, and it needs a leader? Sheesh....now Obama's gonna fix the world? He can't even fix the corruption in his own Chicago, in fact, he invites it. I'm sure the world could turn a blind eye too.
OBAMA MUST ALWAYS REMEMBER, AMERICA COMES FIRST IN ANY OF HIS DECISIONS. I HOPE HE HAS GOD AS HIS CO-PILOT AND NO OTHER!
I can not believe how much Mr.Bush hurt American image abroad. I am glad we chose Mr.Obama.
Not since John Kennedy has the world seen such enthusiasm, hope and beleive in America. It is ironic that it was Kennedy's people that first recognised Obama's potential.
It is a much needed respite for the world, hope spring eternal. His running and consequent election has had such positive effect the world over the likes that has not been seen in a long time. Africa, Asia, Europe and South America all seem to have a stake in American election.
I have always thougth that if America was going to be a world leader, it has to have a leader who has a world view not the ones we have had in recent years who have a myopic view of the world.
The goodwill that is being generated now will go a long way to aleviate some of the ills in the world before he actually begin to govern because they will now be mch receptive.
It is a powerful message to every kid especially the poor kid that with hard work, determination they can achieve.
The world needs this, America needs it.
I don't think that people should be hailing this man. He is the president elect for the USA, not someone of some higher power. Our country is going down hill from here
It is sp wonderful to see not only in America did Obama touch so many people but all over the world God bless him and everything he has done and what he will do in the future you are #1 Mr. Barack Obama much love always.
As a former Indonesian and now a naturalized American, and adopted kamaaina from Hawaii - I cannot tell the world how happy and proud I am with the election of Barrack Obama as the new PRESIDENT of the United States and world leader. We all have great expectations that America will again be looked upon with admiration and respect by the rest of the world
Yes! Obama = P.O.T.W. = President of the world! Hmm not quite the same as POTUS. But the meaning is still there.
