Iraqis to Obama: We need ‘change,’ too

BAGHDAD, Iraq – Iraqis expressed hope Wednesday that Barack Obama’s victory in the presidential election would usher in a change in policy toward their struggling country, but many remained skeptical.

"The American policy is fixed and it won't change. Washington has its own agenda to carry on. We will wait and see if Obama is going to withdraw American forces from Iraq," said Alwan Awad, a bookshop owner in Baghdad. "Let him start a new era of extending bridges of cooperation and friendship with Iraq and the rest of the Arab and Muslim world."

Obama, president-elect in the United States, has pledged to change U.S. policy toward Iraq by drawing down troops and shifting them to Afghanistan, another country beset by conflict years after a U.S. invasion. This message resonated with some Iraqis.

"I loved this man's motto ‘change’ which has a large meaning and effect on the whole world," said Nawzad Kurdi, a shoe manufacturer in Baghdad. "I sincerely hope that this man will lead a new policy and strategy to show the real face of the Americans as friends and partners to people of the world and change the bad image which Bush drew for the Americans, particularly in Iraq."

Still doubts, but hope
Taha Yassin, an imam who fled to Baghdad from the violence of Fallujah, doubted that Obama would be able to change U.S. policy. "American presidents’ policy won't be changed – antagonizing Muslims and Arabs and befriending Israelis at the expense of the American people’s interests. Is that reasonable?"

While not all Iraqis think U.S. policy is oriented against the Arab world, most yearn for a lasting peace that won’t require the presence of U.S. troops. This morning, on my way to the NBC News bureau, an American military convoy stopped my cab, angering the driver.

"In 1978, the American contractors used to walk unguarded in Karrada streets, but look now, they are in the Humvees not feeling safe," the driver said. "Thanks to Bush who turned the world upside down. We hope Obama will change all that mess."

The racial dynamic of Obama’s election loomed large in Basra, where 15-20 percent of the population is black. The descendents of those brought from Africa centuries ago as slaves were excited that for the first time a black man would be president of the United States.

"Unbelievable! Obama is the next U.S. president. That is unbelievable!" said Majid Hussein, a black college student in Basra. "A ‘black’ president in the ‘White’ House. Who ever, ever thought of that before?"

Suhaila Mohammed Ali, a teacher in Basra, hoped Obama’s win would send a message to minorities around the world.

"Obama's landslide victory is a pride for Africans, blacks and the oppressed people in the world. We may say now that apartheid is finished," she said.

Despite this enthusiasm, Ali didn’t believe Obama’s call for change would mean much for Iraq.

"But alas the American policy won't be changed, even if the president is black."

After reading these posts, it is clear that our nation is as divided today as it was last year.  With all his eloquence, Obama has not "changed" many of our minds.  I agree with the person who commented that the Iraqis quoted in this article seem to have been chosen to represent the general opinion of the people there.  In my view, its typical, biased journalism.
Im tired of everyone wanting to end the war, yeah i think the way we are going about it is wrong, but you have to remember why we went in the first place, 9-11, we as Americans cant sit back and watch terrorists bomb our country and kill us, we have to stand up to them sometime. Obama might bring change. I hope its for the best, but spreading the wealth and higher taxes to people that make over 40,000 a year isnt going to bring about new jobs its going to make it to where succesful companies have to cut jobs. and Obama really doesnt have a foreign policy if you look carefully, it is not a matter of race, but i really cant see how any change for the best can take place. Like I said before hopefully but i dont see it.. GOD HELP US ALL.
Why does everyone keep talking about how Bush "started the war in Iraq"? He didn't start it, he tried to suppress further destruction and horror from reaching our shores. Does ANYONE remember 9/11 anymore? I think that people have been way too harsh on Bush. He came into office at a very difficult time in our nation's history. I don't think that most of the people complaining about him could have done much better of a job. Good luck to Obama and God bless our Country.
Regardless of what the time frame that Obama has for troop withdrawl in Iraq, it will still need to go in phases to protect the troops and also to allow Iraq (the legitimate government) to fill the void that will be there as they leave.  So it is not like it will be over night so yes give President Elect Obama a chance and it will happen.
You have to want liberty enough to fight for it - not get the biggest kid on the block to fight for you.  Don't kid yourselves that we are fighting this war to help the people of Iraq.  It's about oil, always has been.  When we leave, it will probably return to the way it was.  While that is a shame, the Iraqi people have to do this - we can't do it for them.  We have to leave sometime; we can't stay there forever nor should we.  And no amount of power is going to change Muslim fundamentalists minds about us.
No WMD's! Hussein is dead! Winners! Pull out of Iraq and re-direct troop focus on hunting down and killing Bin Laden and Al Queda! Winners! Bring troops home! Winners!
In the article, there is the comment from Nawzad Kurdi, a shoe manufacturer in Baghdad. "I sincerely hope that this man will lead a new policy and strategy to show the real face of the Americans as friends and partners to people of the world..."
This is a wonderful sentiment to hear...the 'real' face of Americans. This election was not about race; it was about ideals! I helped elect a President, not because of his skin color, but because of the hope he elicits for change. To hear my 12 year old son cheering when Obama's victory was announced was truly gratifying. We listened to his acceptance speech together and talked about it afterward, particularly the part when Obama talked about change, that he couldn't do it alone, that he would call on the American people (and people throughout the world) to take an active part in bringing about the changes we seek. I'm not fond of slogans, but "Yes We Can" change things, and it begins with our attitudes. Positive things happens when people think positively. We must listen to each other with open hearts and minds, imagine and create solutions together, and learn how to be ourselves without denegrating others.
The hope for a better world for my 12 year old does not lie with President-elect Obama; it lies with every person on the planet. If we breed fear and distrust, hatred, secularism, then we shall all reap what is sown. I voted for a change. To reap a harvest of peace, justice, fairness, and prosperity, not just for America, but for all.
W are all hoping for less arrogance, less hubris, less war, and more diplomacy to resolve issues. A lot will depend on the selection of his cabinet and rest of the staff. Selection of Rahm Emanual as chief of staff is the first step in the WRONG direction.
I voted for McCain but I will be praying for Obama now that he was elected that he will go to God for the answers on how to run this wonderful country. We took God out of it and look where we are. This country was founded on God. Maybe it is time we beg for his forgiveness and put him back in charge. Good luck we are counting on you Mr. Obama to practice what you preach.
I wish people would stop talking so negitive about Obama and realize HEY!- it's time for a change in this country and he just might be that man. It's time to stop the war bring home our beloved soldiers and come together again as 1 nation under god-liberty and justice for ALL.....
I think that if you voted for Obama you should suit up in uniform and fight for your country to stay safe. All you did is ask for home front fighting which will not only effect yourself but the children in the furture. Think about all the military families you just effected!McCains plan was better no matter which way you look at it. It takes time to resolve things not words of broken promises!
I can understand the doubts of such countries that are experiencing the oppression that minorities have been experiencing for hundreds of years from this country.  Obama was pre-destined for the U.S presidency at this very time in American  history. And this destiny is to change not only American History but world history. To these countries that doubt Obama's influence on American and foreign policies, just take his becoming the first African American president as a sign that the United States of America is finally acknowledging the time for change.
GO OBAMA!!!!

I for one, am utterly grateful for the chance to have taken part in such a historical election.  I'm also grateful for the notion that all racial barriers in our wonderful country, have finally been crossed.   It's a tremendous relief to see a man of African descent in the White House.
I remember growing up in Chicago, and being forced to deal with the issues of racial segregation.  Even in the 1980's, there was still a rather high tension between parties, revolving solely on the color on one's skin.  Schools were privately funded NOT to have "space" for students of color...
Crazy.  I never believed in the seperation ideals; and I'm thrilled to see that America agrees!  I voted for Obama, NOT for the color of his skin; but rather for his ideals of "Change", and the overwhelming thought of bringing this country back to where we were before.  McCain just didn't prove to me, that he was worthy of running the country. Granted, as a war-hero, I highly respect him, and his ideals about the war and putting America's respect back on the map -- however; I feel that the war needs to draw to a close, as peace is imminent.  In those regards, Obama's ideals, suited my "independent" bill.  I am neither democrat, nor republican --  but for this election, who needed to be sided in that regard?
The sheer fact that Obama is black (half...), is just the icing on the overall cake.   :)

It's historic, and it's about darned time!!

Good Luck Mr. President
Think Hard and Long before you make your decisions.
I wish you the best.
“Hope and change”.
Regardless of party, race or religious affiliation this is what most of Americans are wanting.  Most are feeling the strain of economic burdens and war fatigue.
This has left people feeling vulnerable and impressionable.
Obama has swept the country's vulnerable and impressionable minds mesmerizing and hypnotizing with his eloquent speech.  This can be a great thing IF he keeps the momentum and can continue to motivate the American people who are facing a tremendous uphill road with no end in sight.
THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE TO JOIN TOGETHER IN UNITY TO OVERCOME THE CRISIS’S WE ARE FACING.
Can the American people endure this up hill battle?
He has a way of bring people together, connecting with the new generation and filling people with “hope and change”.. but is he up for the challenge?  Lets “hope” so.
I “hope” he truly understands how impressionable people are right now and he is committed to leading this nation with INTEGRITY.   I personally did not vote for Obama because I was not sold on his integrity, and was unclear of where he stood on most issues..  He does however represent what America is about..  By overcoming enormous obstacles by PERSONAL CHOICE he has become the example of opportunity that this great nation has to offer.   I will support Obama as the leader of the FREE country but I will feel more comfortable supporting him should he choose a strong and knowledgeable cabinet.  I could go on and on with the long list of reasons why I chose differently but won’t because it won’t do any good.  It is what it is and I must move forward in unity with the voice of the majority.
congrats, Sir Obama.
Remember that true leadership only comes when you become servant of all. That does not mean compromising to all decision, but fighting for rights of your people. That is true leadership.
Yes, Obama will pull troops out of Iraq. Too bad they don't want out. Of course, he could never understand the soldier's need to finish what he started and see victory. See the deaths of fallen friends and comrades justified. Obama has never had enough back bone to enlist. I don't care if he's purple, blue or green in color, the fact that a majority of the country voted for him based on race makes me seriously question the intelligence of my fellow Americans. May God bless our country, only He can save us now!
We've been screaming across the ocean at Iran since Reagan was in office. We won't talk to you until you change your religion. Maybe it's time to sit down and talk. We don't need to betray Isreal or hand over our nuclear secrets... Maybe they just want an apology from us for screwing around in their politics for the last 40 years.
I support Obama's idea of immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. Sadaam is history and no WMD were found. Let's say "Mission accomplished"! It's about time the US leaves Iraqis alone to manage their own democracy and defend their country.
The human and capital cost of occupation of Iraq is unbelievable. America needs a change of tatics and approach to whole bunch of issues. I think that's what Obama is proposing. Congratulations and goodluck to him!
iraqis already have a change they no longer have sadam hussain.now they must take control of their country in a positive way they should not need u.s troops for that
Has anyone of you talked to a veteran of Iraq? You set here and say that it is a stupid war, and it makes no sense. That is like spitting in the face of the ones that have served and the ones that have died, so you could sit their and complain about how bad you got it. Listen to something other than the bias news, you know the one that survives on ratings, and the only way they think they can get ratings is to show only the bad. All I ask is that you get informed before you open your mouth and insert foot.
refering to previous comment: Do you mean a withdrawal process have include lot of innocent people mainly muslims killed and squandering their wealth. It is better for obama to have a clear time table to get out of the cogmire they are already in as fast as possible before it is too late for recovery plan.
There are a lot of posts here that say we need to come together as a country and support Obama, but why couldn't we come together and support Bush?  I think it's just plain wrong to see so many people trash a president who is running an entire nation, when most of the ones complaining can't get their own lives in order!  Every modern president comes into office with major issues, both local and foreign.  Same thing happened to Bush. Clinton left a lot of unsolved issues (a big one being terrorism). Yet, we have a number of people that want Bush charged for war crimes?  Are you serious?  Now, I agree Bush didn't particularly live up to all his campaign promises (who does?), but one thing he was courageous -yes COURAGEOUS- enough to do was to go after the terrorists who have been costing the U.S. and many other countries countless lives over the past several decades.  For that, at least, he should be praised, not punished.  We cannot just sit around and wait for the jihadist muslims to come and take over our country and the rest of the world (which is their clearly stated goal).  We have to finish this fight, in Iraq, Afghanistan, Isreal...wherever terrorism may be.  We need to pray that Obama will heed God's guidance so that he may right this great nation.  God Bless America and please watch over our troops.
The winning of Obama does not necessarily mean the change of US' foreign policy. We should consider the nature of foreign policy, which is the combination of elites' power. Obama does not take his decision by himself, he is influenced by the distribution of power in US' government. The foreign policy will not change dramatically as long as the US' national interest is still the same.
I am an american and Army wife, my husband left our children and I last month to defend everyones right to complain about anything and everything that strikes thier fancy...I dont agree with the majority but i also believe that a withdrawl from iraq would end with more deaths around the world...who will be there when the solider down the street dies for his country...obama?...nope just the black car saying he wont be home anymore...color does matter...why isnt it a white car?..are we all blind?...i hope that the new president can keep his promises...so as a soliders wife i have no choice but to wait and see if he can really change the world
All I've got to say is, if you get your ballot and all you see is Republican and Democrat, YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG.
I've served in the military for 10 years and deployed to Iraq (twice).  There was a real creditable threat according to what we had in intel.  Sorry conspiracy theorists, there was no cover up.

Yes we lost about 4,000 troops in the last 5 years.  But on the other hand we lose more than that do to drunk driving, accidents, etc in normal peace time every year.  The Iraqis lost over 100,000, but then again estimates put Saddam killed over 400,000 for either political reasons or just for amusement, this does not include actual military attacks on his own people.

So what good has come out of it.  We took out a political pary and dictator that organized and copied the Nazi party almost line by line.  We have been and are still rebuilding an infastructure that was destroyed by neglict from the Saddam and his cronies.  Surprise, surprise we did very little damage to their infastructure.  We have not yet perfected a bomb that makes things rust to pieces or create shoddy wiring in electrical panels.  Also fighting there has drained the resources of terrorists (they have a lot less money, material and manpower than we do).  Those resources could have been used to attack us here in the U. S.

The end is in sight, we must make sure we do it right or the last 5 years would be for nothing.  For those who see the last 5 years as nothing but a waste or started for the wrong reasons, now is the chance to make up for that.  Now is the time to make sure Iraq can govern itself by its own people with freedom, thats something isn't it.  Make sure our troops withdrawl with honor and not in defeat which will send a message of strength to those who are planning attacks on us, something more still.  Withdrawling when the job is finished and not because a made up timeline is up sends a message to all we will see things through to the end and show the world our intentions were to depose an evil dictator and not to take over another country and make it our puppet, even something more.  No matte what you feel about the past much can be gained if the turnover is done right, much more can be lost if done wrong.

25 years ago a Washington outsider named Jimmy Carter burst on the scene. We had Nixon resign. People got tired of Ford.  Carter's mantra was "change" and I remember that resignated over and over.  Oh, we got change all right. I just hope that if the economy gets as bad as it was then, Obama won't blame it on the people's "malaise".
Let's get past the stereotyping of black and white, half-black etc.  Barack Obama is a man with a vision for the future of America, and I believe he and Joe Biden will work to improve the lot of the working people in the U.S., to bring the greedy lawless opportunists in the financial sector to task for what they have done, and to regain the respect of our allies by ending the imperialist oil wars.
For those who don't think we should have gone to Iraq, try checking the facts.
Associated Press June 2008; 550 metric tons of Uranium (originally from Niger) completed a journey from Iraq to Canada. The new Iraqi government sold it to a Canadian company, and it was secretly transported by the US army to Canada. Iraq has no nuclear power plants. The Uranium was found in 2003 but it's pressence was hushed up by the Bush administration for security reasons.
Here's what many of us would like to see with the Obama administration:
1. A drawdown of our oversees troops not just in the middleeast but everywhere in the world - not completely (that's not possible in this unstabe world)but enough to reduce the military burden and cost to the US substantially. We should not be the world's policemen anymore. The American Empire is a dangerous neo-conservative dream that must be laid to rest. It is both anti-democratic and anti-American.
2. Reduction of our crushing National Debt that has doubled from 5 trillion to 10+ trillion dollars under the misguided policies of the Bush Administration. This will require sacrifice especially of those who have benefitted most from the current administations tax policies but is essential to ending the American and worldwide economic crisis. Osama Bin Laden's stated plan was to bankrupt America as happened to the once great Soviet Union due to their misguided military industrial policies. It will not be good for the US or the world if that were to happen.
3. Sensible regulations on banking and investment must be instituted that will stop the excesses of speculation that have led to the current economic crisis.
4. Restoration of our civil liberties including restoration of Habeus Corpus and the stopping of unlawful detention, torture and spying on Americans.
5. Some type of fairness brought to our current Health Care mess so that all Americans can receive affordable Health Care.

If he focuses on these things then my support will have been well worth it.
