Iranians very focused on U.S. election

TEHRAN, Iran – In a country that can be very isolated, people from all walks of life in Iran seem to know the ins and outs of the upcoming U.S. elections. Most are well informed about the candidates and their running mates and almost everyone has an opinion or a theory – some surprising, some far-fetched.

Some even want to claim Sen. Barack Obama as one of their own – with Persian lineage to boot.

"Obama has an international background, I understand his background is not totally American, he even has family ties with Iran, I hear Bushehr," said a university professor who asked only to be identified as Max. He was referring to the southwest port town of Bushehr, which coincidentally is the site of Iran’s controversial nuclear facility.

VIDEO: Iranians express low expectations for the next U.S. president

Others seem to believe that the hard-line policies of Sen. John McCain may be exactly what are needed to deal with the current Iranian regime. "I think McCain should become president, America needs a strong experienced man to deal with this region," said a student who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Extensive coverage
It’s not surprising that Iranians opinions vary on the election, it has been extensively covered by the Iranian media; most of the daily newspapers and weekly political magazines have been dominated by coverage of the race for the White House.

There have been tables showing the results of the various polls and translations from a whole host of American newspapers and magazines. The newspapers have also published transcripts (in Persian) of all of the presidential and vice presidential debates, as well as in-depth profiles of the candidates and their running mates.

One weekly news magazine called "Sharvand" published an article titled "The Calm Obama versus the Fiery McCain." Another article argued that American was not ready for, and would not vote for, a black president.

The newspaper, "Iran," reported that Obama was ahead in the polls because of the failed policies of President Bush and that it would be a huge surprise for Iran and the rest of the world if Obama were not victorious.

Maryam Kamali, a secretary at a steel company who has been closely following the election, made parallels between the U.S. election and Iran’s presidential election scheduled for next year. "It’s funny that the most important issue in the U.S elections is the failing economy and the most important issue in our elections is also going to be the failing economy."

Outcome won’t change U.S. foreign policy
Many people we spoke to were very skeptical about the outcome of the election. They didn’t think it mattered who became the next president because they believe U.S foreign policy is predetermined in a negative way toward Iran and that America will do anything it needs to in order to keep Israel happy.

"The American people have no choice in these elections, the decision will be made by a powerful Jewish cartel," said Hamid Nagat, a businessman.

"If a presidential candidate does not stand behind Israel like a mountain, they will never get voted into office," said Salah Mohamadi, a student in his first year of university.

Majid, an accountant who gave only his first name, said that the difference of opinion between Iran and the U.S. over Israel was really at the heart of the differences between the two countries. "It does not matter if it’s McCain or Obama because whoever becomes president, their first priority is going to be Israel – and we don’t recognize Israel as a country, so we will always be at odds," he said.

Unlikely endorsement

But when I asked a very nationalistic right-wing journalist who he wanted to become president, he surprised me by saying he favored McCain. He explained that his viewpoint was based on fears about Iran’s national security. "If McCain became president and wanted to attack Iran, the international community would not stand behind him, but if Obama became president and wanted to attack Iran, the international community would stand behind him," he said, but asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Iran’s political circles are also watching closely. A government official who spoke to me on condition of anonymity said, "Of course we want Obama to become president, but we are also being very careful not to endorse him – as an Iranian endorsement might have an adverse effect on his campaign."

Regardless, whoever becomes the next U.S. president will have a profound effect on Iran.

The relationship between the US and Iran, over the past 30 years has seemed like the worst kind of dysfunctional, abusive, and chaotic divorces - each accusing the other of atrocities and mongering, and each sharing a part of the blame for the un-holy relationship. Each country has served as a convenient scapegoat for the other’s folly. There is a deeper history than most Americans realize, and more recent history that most Iranians would like to ignore. I don’t think that core US foreign policy changes that much between administrations. However, not having a cowboy-hat wielding Texas oil man in the White House might be a good start.

McCain appears eager to drop bombs on Iran. He’s even written a little song for it. But judging from his short-term emotionally satisfying decisions with no foresight – Sarah Palin – and the depth of the duos foreign policy experience, only one candidate stands out that has any hope of making sober policy decisions.
Ahem. Ronald Reagan was the most intelligent president since FDR. He was predicting the fall of the Soviet Union while even those of his own party were saying it would outlast the U.S.

If Obama indeed would negotiate with the likes of Ahmedinajad without preconditions, then I'm sorry folks, he would most certainly not be the most intelligent president since FDR. And as far as intelligence goes, I'm sure Stalin and Hitler were pretty intelligent too.
In regards to Melisa, Laf., LA (Sent Friday, October 24, 2008 10:38 AM)  that supposed letter/statement is a blatantly false chain email...see explanation on SNOPES.com before believing some rediculous sounding email.  http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/stance.asp
Re Melissa's post, That's the problem with these false emails going around, people believe everything they read on the internet and 99% are false. Please check before posting. Totally false email going around.
If Obama win the elections in the USA, it will change the whole concept of new-young leadership around the world. Several countries are following very closely this election because this old democracy is exercising the right to vote in a very simplistic, but at the same time using this right with civility and candor of an important election in probably USA darkest moments. I would not be surprised if Obama becomes USA president. If that is the case be aware that a lot of tyrants will fall down, by using democratic elections as a major tool to major changes worldwide.
Regarding the above "Dale Lindsborg" satire via Melisa; this is exactly how crazy rumors get started. People cannot distingish fact from fiction nor the absurd from reality. Now they've got Obama repeatedly burning our flag! With this kind of ignorance and stupidity right here at home, Iran does may not have much to worry about, we may defeat ourselves!
Melisa in Louisianna, if you actually exist and that's your right name:  If you feel there's any rightness at all to your views, opinions and positions, why do you lie?  There IS NO Dale Lindsborg at the Post.  Anybody reading your post has internet access, and can IMMEDIATELY CHECK.  If you actually exist, you should check these things yourself.  It's easy and it's the right thing to do.  If you support John McCain, do it for the right reasons; he's an honorable man, even if his campaign has turned dishonorable (he's become desperate, as this is his last shot at president, and he knows it), but DON'T LIE ABOUT THE OTHER GUY.  Show some honor yourself.  Get the facts, and present factual information.  This should the methodology for US ALL.
T.G. Lewis
Melisa, do you think that if Obama actually said that, that he would still be a candidate for president?  Your quote came from "Semmens, John. "Semi-News -- A Satirical Look at Recent News." Arizona Conservative (azconservative.org), 27 Oct. 2007."  The major word here is "Satirical".

Melisa, here's what is posted on wasingtonpost.com related to what you have pasted.  By the way, the source of that is barbwire.com.  Apparently, this Dale doesn't even work for the Washington Post.  Check your sources!!!!

Type in Dale Lindsborg on the Washington Post page and here's what you get:

Anonymous: I have received an e-mail ostensibly sent from Dale Lindsborg of the Washington Post. It refers to an interview with Obama on this past Sunday's "Meet The Press" where he talks about why he doesn't believe in saluting the flag. Is this really a person who works for The Post?
Anne E. Kornblut: We just checked the database here, and I can't find a Dale Lindsborg. I'm going to make sure people here know about it. Can you send us the e-mail?
Melissa - your source on the "Meet the Press" quotation deliberately mislead you - Sen. Obama NEVER sead anything even close to your statements.  Thes is a deliberate misrepresentation of the facts. (LIES)

As for the other blogs on Iran - you surely realize that Iranians DO live in a democracy.  We Americans tend to describe leaders of other counties that we dislike as dictatos even though they are, if fact, the democratically elected leader of their country (Chaves for instance)
To Melisa,
Obama was NOT on Meet the Press on September 7th. A satirist by the name of John Semmons wrote the article as a joke and the McCain camp has been e-mailing to gullible folks who will believe anything. Check it out. It never happened. The McCain camp is desperate, and is using fear tactics to dissuade voters from Obama.
Melisa of Laf. LA - Boy, do I have a bridge I'd like to sell to you!  You have now officially become one of the ignorant masses who believe every email they receive.  Do you ever check out the facts?  In the future, please do so before you spread such toxic fabrications.

If you go to www.snopes.com and www.urbanlegends.com you will find that this whole story is a HOAX.  Senator Obama wasn't even on the 9/7/08 edition of Meet the Press.  Made up story, made up interview, made up everything.

I challenge you - check out the two websites - go ahead, take responsibility and be an adult.  Then come back to this site and acknowledge that what you stated in your email is untrue.  (Of course, if you were actually aware this story was total fiction and knowingly perpetuated the rumor further, you won't respond to this.)

I doubt Melisa is even a real person, or at least in the sense that she's not innocently posting information she believes to be true. All hail the spin doctors! At least go the extra mile and post falshoods that have yet to be debunked. Maybe she should apply for a job with Fox News! :p
Thanks, Ross.  I knew that didn't sound like something Obama would say.  Anyone who doesn't go to factcheck.org or snopes.com to check out any of the allegations being made by either side in this campaign is a fool.

I support Obama because he learns and adjusts quickly, is intelligent, pragmatic, unflappable, is not vengeful, has an inner core of strength that other nations would be fools to test, and would regain some respect for the United States just by his election.  He would be able to undo a lot of the damage George W. Bush has done to our standing and reputation in the world.

Anyone who questions Obama's ability to lead should consider the fact that he has put together an organization in a very short time that not only knocked Hilary out of the race and has McCain on the ropes, but now has the support of Hilary and Bill, as well as a growing number of prominent Republicans. In addition, he has impressive teams of advisors on the economy, science, and other areas.

Obama does not surround himself with "yes" people.  He welcomes people who disagree with him to express that disagreement.  It's one of the reasons he chose Joe Biden as his VP.  He knows Joe will speak his mind to him.  People who have worked with Obama say that if you are in a meeting with him and haven't spoken up, he will ask what you're thinking.

We need this man as our President.
Melissa of Laf. LA.  You are so full of it.  Provide the link or video to prove you point/statement.  Sen. Obama was not even on Meet the Press on Sept 7. 2008 as you stated.  It is ignorant people like you that create hate in the world and what will be the end of the U.S. as we know it.
I am REALLY tired of hearing "I don't like either candidate, but I guess ____ is better than the other guy."  We don't HAVE to vote within the two party system. A vote given in good conscience with careful consideration is never "wasted".

Do some research and find out who the third party candidates are. For example, other parties with candidates on the ballot here in Colorado include Constitution, Green, American Independent, and Prohibition, and others.  There are also unaffiliated candidates.
I have been following the news and the comments for the last three weeks and it hurts to see how it can all be manipulated (Melisa) (Fox News) etc I feel that it is time that Americans show to be grown up and accept & admit that an African American as President is as normal as having a Woman (Germany)or any other race  or creed and gender. The point is that you need to unite and elect the best person and the one that will have the energy to cope with the challenge for the next four years but also the one that will be best accepted by the other Nations, be friends or foes, if i have to believe what I read it will be Obama, even here in Spain.... I think that we are expecting a radical change in the attitude  of the USA for the sake of the World !! before we run out of time!!

RE: Melisa, Laf La (sent Fri. Oct 24, 2008.
That is some mighty fine imagination that she has. I checked the archives of the Meet The Press show that was referenced. 1. The general was not a guest on that show. 2. Senator Obama was not a guest on that show. 3 The show airs at 10:00 AM EST and is only on an hour. AMAZING!!!!!
To one john doe:  if you think McCain is pushing socialism, you need to take a look around.  Obama is all but citing marxist doctrine.  He'll be nothing more than Jimmy Carter II, only WORSE.

Alas, the masses are nothing more than lemmings, who somehow feel they need to be saved from themselves, and by golly the politicians will gladly tell you how to live your life.

Good luck America, you're gonna need it.
Melisa....Obama was not on Meet the Press on September 7th...he never spoke those words.  Stop reading e-mails if you can't differentiate between fact and fiction.
Melisa's post is a BALD-FACED LIE. It was a part of disinformation campaign by GOP, like the ridiculous lies being told to the electorate in the evil robocalls.

GOP has lost all credibility in the USA, and is doing all it can to tear this nation apart. We are fed-up with this crap. Enough is enough...
:-(
Having read through the comments you have posted, it was notable that 85-90% of them want to kiss Obama's, well, ring?  Of the few pro McCain comments you posted, you picked one that was so far fetched as to further stroke your need to push Obama on the public.  I only hope that after you people get this man elected, we survive long enough for you all to regret it.  Sad to say the soldiers among us will again pay with our blood to keep you sheep from being devoured...
In response to Melisa:  You should make sure you check your sources before you post such harsh accusations on a world blog.  That "transcript" was written as a satire by John Semmens who writes a column called "Semi-News" for the Arizona Conservative. Since "Meet The Press" is aired on MSNBC I thought maybe you would take the time to look up the transcript yourself.  You would see that on Sept. 7th the guests on the show were Joe Biden and Tom Friedman.  Not Barack Obama.  My point is this: don't add to the clutter that the media is already throwing out at all of us.  Be informed, take your own initiative and know the FACTS before you go and add to election chaos.  It is up to all of us to filter through the mess and make the best decisions for ourselves on November 4th.  I hope that you read this and respond.
“Most people around the world want Obama to win because he would be the most intelligent president we have had since FDR.” – Jorn Otte

I don’t know Jorn, FDR was able to get ‘executive power’ and ran for 3 terms.  I highly doubt that even Obama has the charisma to pull that off.  Don’t mistake Charisma for Intelligence.

Not that I think McCain is any better, Andrew was right in saying that both candidates are not fully ‘suited’ for the job.  In my opinion, even if they ran the country as a ‘team’, they’d still fall far short of FDR’s ability to lead.

Jorn you’re overly optimistic if you think Obama could be a friend to Israel and the Arab Middle East.  There’s no middle ground in that debate and once Obama did one thing ‘for’ one faction he’d be opposed to the other.  You hear it in the article when one student even pointed out that he doesn’t see Israel as a country.  How do you mitigate a situation when one group feels the other party doesn’t have a right to exist?

Personally, I think all this arguing over candidates who are backed by useless and corrupt parties is a joke.  What we need to have AGAIN in this country is someone who truly represents the PEOPLE (not the ‘special interests’) and we’re never going to get one of those out of Washington.  Those of us who blindly vote republican or blindly vote democrat because of one or two issues are the problem.  Fix that and maybe we’ll see another FDR.
It seems that the Iranians are better versed about the canidates than are our potential voters.
Grandma of 3 your intent is appreciated but it is directed to the wrong post. Your message - about doing your own research - should be directed to the simpleton who put up what everyone knows is a fake report of what Obama said. This was a satirical piece -it never happened. The republican party and those who support it are do desperate that they make things up constantly to propogate on the web.
A young Iranian man who came here in the 70's saved my grandmothers life.  He's now a U.S. citizen.  He's muslim and a great human being, not to mention my CPA.

Iran is not made up of evil people.  Their theocratic style of gov't is the problem.  Smart dialogue, international efforts to end their weapons dreams, and Barack Obama as president will help to bring Iran into a more peaceful and prosperous position in the world.
I think most of the world would prefer to live in peace. Between the two candidates, we are more likely to see a peaceful world, with one that is willing to talk diplomaticly to other leaders, without preconditions. I believe it is the job of the POTUS to be a diplomat. His top responsibility is to resolve world problems thru diplomacy, only using war in self defense of this country and our allies, as a last resort. I think the world is more likely to stay the way it is with a president that thinks "bomb bomb Iran" is a funny remark. One who says "I won't talk to you unless you do what I say". That kind of removes the need for diplomacy, or even to talk at all. As far as backing Isreal goes, we should back any nation that is a democracy, that asks. An intelligent POTUS would accomplish this thru negotiations, not threats, or war. I believe I'll vote for a peaceful world. Obama/Biden 08
From Iran:
This is very easy to understand Government of Iran and all Mullahs in power want McCain to be president of US that they can use US as excuse and adversary to take the focus away from all miseries that these Religious Dictators brought to Iran and crush the people's will, and any conflict makes them more powerful.
On the contrary most Iranian people want Obama as president that the Regime in Iran can not use US as an excuse and immediate danger therefore they have to cooperate with people's will and make many moderation, including free election.
What we do not undestand in Iran is that how a Ntion like US that has the best Constituion in the World and has access to all news can not see what we see here on US Election!? McCain is bad for Freedom fighter agains Mullhs in Iran.
Maybe Iranians should worry about their own political woes before caring about our pres.
Iranians should overthrow their government. The leadership in Iran is nothing but a pack of thugs that oppress their people in order to maintain power. Such a shame to a people that have the richest history.  Of course they support Obama they know he would be soft on them.
You elect the government you deserve.
Okay, okay... I think we made a clear and concise point about checking Snopes before posting garbage we read in emails.  Let's get back to the point of this blog.
You folks endorsing this "feel good American sentiment" around the world need to be very, very careful what you wish for.  Dont think for one minute the international community, especially those with rogue leadership, wont attempt to hurt this country and your way of life. That idealogy has nothing to do with Bush or intelligence. You like your freedoms, dont you?  Dont forget how they became to be.
