Iranians very focused on U.S. election

TEHRAN, Iran – In a country that can be very isolated, people from all walks of life in Iran seem to know the ins and outs of the upcoming U.S. elections. Most are well informed about the candidates and their running mates and almost everyone has an opinion or a theory – some surprising, some far-fetched.

Some even want to claim Sen. Barack Obama as one of their own – with Persian lineage to boot.

"Obama has an international background, I understand his background is not totally American, he even has family ties with Iran, I hear Bushehr," said a university professor who asked only to be identified as Max. He was referring to the southwest port town of Bushehr, which coincidentally is the site of Iran’s controversial nuclear facility.

VIDEO: Iranians express low expectations for the next U.S. president

Others seem to believe that the hard-line policies of Sen. John McCain may be exactly what are needed to deal with the current Iranian regime. "I think McCain should become president, America needs a strong experienced man to deal with this region," said a student who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Extensive coverage
It’s not surprising that Iranians opinions vary on the election, it has been extensively covered by the Iranian media; most of the daily newspapers and weekly political magazines have been dominated by coverage of the race for the White House.

There have been tables showing the results of the various polls and translations from a whole host of American newspapers and magazines. The newspapers have also published transcripts (in Persian) of all of the presidential and vice presidential debates, as well as in-depth profiles of the candidates and their running mates.

One weekly news magazine called "Sharvand" published an article titled "The Calm Obama versus the Fiery McCain." Another article argued that American was not ready for, and would not vote for, a black president.

The newspaper, "Iran," reported that Obama was ahead in the polls because of the failed policies of President Bush and that it would be a huge surprise for Iran and the rest of the world if Obama were not victorious.

Maryam Kamali, a secretary at a steel company who has been closely following the election, made parallels between the U.S. election and Iran’s presidential election scheduled for next year. "It’s funny that the most important issue in the U.S elections is the failing economy and the most important issue in our elections is also going to be the failing economy."

Outcome won’t change U.S. foreign policy
Many people we spoke to were very skeptical about the outcome of the election. They didn’t think it mattered who became the next president because they believe U.S foreign policy is predetermined in a negative way toward Iran and that America will do anything it needs to in order to keep Israel happy.

"The American people have no choice in these elections, the decision will be made by a powerful Jewish cartel," said Hamid Nagat, a businessman.

"If a presidential candidate does not stand behind Israel like a mountain, they will never get voted into office," said Salah Mohamadi, a student in his first year of university.

Majid, an accountant who gave only his first name, said that the difference of opinion between Iran and the U.S. over Israel was really at the heart of the differences between the two countries. "It does not matter if it’s McCain or Obama because whoever becomes president, their first priority is going to be Israel – and we don’t recognize Israel as a country, so we will always be at odds," he said.

Unlikely endorsement

But when I asked a very nationalistic right-wing journalist who he wanted to become president, he surprised me by saying he favored McCain. He explained that his viewpoint was based on fears about Iran’s national security. "If McCain became president and wanted to attack Iran, the international community would not stand behind him, but if Obama became president and wanted to attack Iran, the international community would stand behind him," he said, but asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Iran’s political circles are also watching closely. A government official who spoke to me on condition of anonymity said, "Of course we want Obama to become president, but we are also being very careful not to endorse him – as an Iranian endorsement might have an adverse effect on his campaign."

Regardless, whoever becomes the next U.S. president will have a profound effect on Iran.

That's so funny that even in Iran "It's the economy stupid"!  We need to show the Iranian people that here in the USA we get rid of our tyrants by voting them out of office, sometimes before they can get in like this year.

I guess the really radical elements want McNasty as he will attack Iran or allow Isreal to do his dirty work for him so he can then use the 150,000 troops in Iraq to attack and occupy Iran and secure even more oil.  But the majority of moderates and liberals in Iran want Obama because they want peace and stability rather than confrontation.

Hopefully the Iranian people will take a clue from us that after we get rid of our repugnant ones they'll do the same and replace Ahmedinajad with someone more moderate, that is if the creepy clergy there doesn't knock the moderates off the ballot before then.
Most people around the world want Obama to win because he would be the most intelligent president we have had since FDR. Israel would have a friend in Obama, but for the first time in history, so would the Muslim world. And Iran may be inspired to FINALLY have a socio-political upheaval at the grassroots level that would oust Ahmadinijad (sp) and his associates.
Iranians support Obama because he will deal with them and the rest of the world according to our new standing in International affairs.

We are no longer the dominate leader in the world. We continue to act like it and that is why America has major issues with other countries.

Our military is stretched, China, Saudi Arabia and many other countries hold our National Debt. And, other economies are begining to out pace the US especially when it comes to future investments and ROI.

McCain will make the stand that we need to negotiate like our interests are the interests of the rest the world and Obama negotiate to find a win-win solution but sometimes coming up short.

We either need to acknowledge our new status in the world and support Barrack or we need to dress for the job we want and suport McCain and hope America turns around and becomes the true Leader in the World again.

Truth be told I think the true Leader acknowledges our place, gains confidence from knowing we have to work with other countries, and becomes the world leader through mediation. I don't think either candidate has it in them.
Perhaps there are SOME out there who are beginning to get 'the picture'. The following is a narrative taken from Sunday Morning's televised 'Meet The Press'. and the author is employed by none other than the Washington Post!! Yeah......the Washington Post of New York and Los Angeles Times fame!! Must say that I'm dually impressed..................

From Sunday's Televised 'Meet the Press' Senator Obama was asked
about his stance on the American Flag.
Obama Explains National Anthem Stance

Sun, 07 Sept. 2008 11:48:04 EST, General Bill Ginn' USAF (ret.) asked Obama to explain why he doesn't follow protocol when the National Anthem is played.
The General also stated to the Senator that according to the United States Code:

Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171... During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform are expected to stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. At the very least, 'Stand and Face It'.

Senator Obama Live on Sunday states, 'As I've said about the fla g pin, I don't want to be perceived as taking sides, Obama said 'There are a lot of people in the world to whom the American flag is a symbol of oppression. And the anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the bombs bursting in air and all. It should be swapped for something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing.' If that were our anthem, then I might salute it.
'We should consider to reinvent our National Anthem as well as to redesign our Flag to better offer our enemies
hope and love. It's my intention, if elected, to disarm America to the level of acceptance to our Middle East Brethren. If we as a Nation of warring people, should conduct ourselves as the nations of Islam, whereas peace prevails. Perhaps a state or period of mutual concord between our governments. When I become President, I will seek a pact or agreement to end hostilities between those who have been at war or in a state of enmity, and a freedom from disquieting oppressive thoughts. We as a Nation have placed upon the nations of Islam an unfair injustice. My wife disrespects the Flag for many personal reasons. Together she and I have attended several flag burning ceremonies in the past, many years ago. She has her views and I have mine' . Of course now, I have found myself about to become the President of the United States and I have put aside my hatred. I will use my power to bring CHANGE to this Nation, and offer the people a new path of hope. My wife and I look forward to becoming our Country's First Family. Indeed, CHANGE is about to overwhelm the United States of America.

WHAAAAAAAT the Hell !!!

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you heard it right.
This could possibly be our next President

I, for one, am speechless.

Dale Lindsborg,
Washington Post
And Obama being wanted in Iran IS NOT A BAD THING PEOPLE , think about , we will have a leader that will move diplomatic barriers to maybe get other countries to agree with us , even if we don't agree with their thinking , do we really want another president that will make us unpopular? and if Obama wins and we do have to go to war with Iran , Obama will most likely be able to lift the needed support from allies to go there.

Be smart and don't automaticly think that because people in other countries like Obama that it is a bad thing , this is what American needs to avoid another war
Regardless of which candidate wins the election, of course the U.S. is going to endorse Israeli policy in the Middle East. They are a democracy, although they oppress the Palestinians, the Israeli government is a rational actor, that is modelled on western political traditions. The reason the U.S. is so adamently against Iran is there threats against a democratic nation, Israel, and Iran's disregard to divulge information regarding there nuclear programs. We are neither ignorant, nor naive.
Does anyone see the warning signs here? "Of course we (Iran) want Obama to become president." I for one have been extremely disappointed with the two candidates that we have to choose from. Regardless of our disappointment, we MUST as a country make a wise and informed decision. Let's unite for once as a country. Let's stop playing the blame game. Please wake up to reality here and stop ignoring the red warning flags that are right in front of our eyes! Our children rely on us to make the right decisions that will give them a bright future.
Please do not let "Melisa" in Louisianna get away with posting the fabricated smear email above unchecked.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/stance.asp
Melisa, if you believe that supposed Washington Post story is legitimate, then you're an even bigger idiot than Palin.  If it truly appeared in the paper, it is clearly satire.
I believe the main reason we are on unfriendly terms with a lot of countries around the world, and not enjoying mutual cooperation with many of them, is that all cultures on mankind abhor hypocrisy. Our history of enlisting the help of dictators to further our regional agendas completely is at odds with our unwavering promotion of democracy as the best political structure for all societies.  So we use guys like Pinochet, Somosa, the Shah Pavlavi, and Sadam Hussein, who are all antithetical to democracy.  And we wonder why nations in some regions don't trust us.  Add to that eight years of a foreign policy that was based essentially on "if you don't do as we ask, we won't work with you, or talk to you".
Does any rational American think other countries  or groups would be motivated to bomb us if we had spent the last 40 years not meddling in other country's politics, but had instead tried to be of service to them? To use our technology and wealth to feed the starving, construct systems for clean drinking water, eradicate pestilence and disease?  To be of service to humanity, which is the main message of the religion that the vast majority of this country ascribes to?
I don't think McCain gets that.  He certainly didn't learn the three main lessons of the Vietnam war- and he was there !
Its like many commentors skipped over the 2nd to last paragraph that says that some right wing Iranian Journalist thinks that if Obamas the president and America decides to go to war with Iran, there will more like be some international support. I think this is true but not only for war but other things as well.
Obama and Biden will change the world for the good just you wait and see. It will be good for Iran and Israel but mostly for America and what is good for America is good for the world. The time is now for the world to work together to solve our problems. We just need a leader not petty selfish politicians.  If you want me to believe there is a God then let us work together to prove it. People First! I have hope in people that work together can reach the stars.

what we are seeing is the beginning of something i have been predicting for some time (ie) the formation of one world govt made up of nation states with a common currency and common laws.We are after all one people, black /white /jew /christian/muslim etc.let there be the discovery of life on another planet and watch how fast we unite.
Why are we surprised that people in other parts of the world are so concerned about who the next leader of the world police is going to be?
According to Anne Kornblut of the Washington Post  - there is no Dale Lindsborg in the papers data base. Sorry Melissa the story you posted is probably false. Go to Washingtonpost.com and put Dale Lindsborg in their search engine and see for yourself.
Does anyone in Iran remember that 'little' incident with our embassy. The reason Iran is isolated in the international community is not because of Israel, but because of their violent transgression against the basis of international relations/dialouge. A new president can't fix that...
The Iranians want Obama, so does Hugo Chavez and many Muslim countries. Interesting. Is is because they perceive him as a man of peace, or one of weakness who will back down? Can he contain Vladimir Putin? But then again, could Palin were she called to "gee gosh golly" be President. Americans, we are in sad shape. We are supposedly the greatest nation in the world, and these two choices are the best we can deliver. And please don't tell me Hillary would have been a good choice. Her weakling husband allowed al queda to escape and flourish. I pray that we survive until a true leader can emerge.
"We have nothing to fear except fear itself" Remember?
THE DALE LINDSBORG POST IS AN URBAN MYTH AND A LIE!

Republicans will stoop to any depth to retain power. Why is it that people like Melisa (or whoever you are) are not smart enough to research such ridiculous ideas? Can't you exercise any judgement and determine a lie when you see it?

This is why the theory of 'trickle down' economics was given a try in the first place. Anyone who knows how to think should be able to see that this is a joke on all but the top 10% of the world. Now, 30 years later, we are 10 TRILLION in debt and the ignorant want more.

The link to show that this is satire, posted by conservative satirist John Semmens is:

http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/barackobama/a/obama_anthem.htm

The only problem with Dale's post is that it is untrue - Obama has not appeared on "Meet the Press" since July 27 - if you don't beleive me - visit their Web site.
Once again,in print for all read, it is stated by Iranians, the US supports israel at all costs. All costs, Perl, Wolfwitz,Feith all maneuvered our entrance into Iraq to 'protect' Israel. I am sick of the US timidity to tell Israel to stop the land grab; we may be their ally, however the misconception that Israel is our ally is preposterous. Ally against who?
i personally do not support isreal.  i don't think we should demand iran halt their nuclear ambitions, if it is ok for isreal not to admit to the world, their possession of nuclear weapons.
Just went to Snopes (see post above by Ross, Harrisburg PA---Thank you Ross)
When will people stop trusting these viral emails....Melisa probably believes all those phishing scams about inheriting money from a long lost relative too.  I wish people would take the extra 5 minutes to fact check these emails before passing them off as true.
Thank you Ross of PA and Brent of VA...It's hard to believe this late in the game, people like Melisa still believe the hype....research information for yourself!
Replying to Dale Linsborg:

Liar, Liar, pants on fire.  Um...Obama wasn't on Meet the Press on September 7, 2008, Joe Biden was.

Melisa, Meet the Press on Sept. 7 had an exclusive interview with Joe Biden. Obama did not appear. Here is the summary.Sept. 7: Exclusive! In his first Sunday morning interview since accepting the Democratic Party's nomination for Vice President, Sen. Joe Biden goes one-on-one with Tom Brokaw. Plus, New York Times columnist Tom Friedman joins us to talk about his new book on climate change and energy, "Hot, Flat, and Crowded."
Did a bit of back-research on Melisa's claims, and it appears that Andy Martin is behind it, as well.  Obama wasn't on MTP on September 7.  Not only am I a fervid MTP fan, but the transcription of the discussions are available on MSNBC.
This statement "although they oppress the Palestinians, the Israeli government is a rational actor"
No red Flags, We should continue to support the opression of the people, WE The PEOPLE of AMERICA.

Below is the url to the "Meet the Press" page where you'll notice a guest list for the September 7, 2008 episode.  I actually watch this program so I was surprised to read about it in "Melisa, Laf., LA" blog, or whatever he/she goes by today.  You’ll notice none of the individuals in her story were on the show that day.  In fact, I have not been able to confirm her story.  You should have applied for the Whitehouse Speaker position, you would have been real good at creating your own facts and fictions.
I believe that most iranians want obama in office but they care less about it because they already sense it that no matter whoever the next president is that he will be against "Iran" because they are about to create a nuclear bomb. Obama is favored by over 75% of the world over McCain because they like the idea where he wants to lead the country. And also they feel as if they would benefit from electing a president that has different backgrounds that understands what it means to be from a country other than the US. Vote OBAMA!!!nov 4th
Snopes is not a reliable fact-checker. Do your OWN research. Be the independent person we all should be and look up the stuff yourself. We are all not lemmings being led off the cliff, are we? If so, then God help this country, because we are not qualified. I am purposely not quoting anybody or any source because that is YOUR job. But I am sure that Snopes is not reliable. We must each check our own selves and be sure of the facts on each issue, not looking on the websites for each other's opinions, rhetoric, etc. That is where we get into trouble in the first place. Cool off your heads, cool your jets and try to think rationally. IT's way too close to the election to actually see objectively anything that's being slung out there amid the mud flyng through the air. We want, we hope, we NEED to be right about this. So, rethink, or just simply THINK, please. For my three grandchildren as well as yours.
Thank you Ross for keeping it real! I am soooo tired of the propaganda we receive daily and this is in the country that proclaims to be free. I just hope for honesty and justice in our, can still be, beautiful  country. Shame on you Melisa!
I had a discussion wiht a Canadian citizen the other day (we were both visiting a nearby national park in Virginia).  He was very interested in the US election and says all Canadians are also.  He seemed to know more about American politics than I did, and I try to keep up!
testing, testing, just checking to see if this ever gets posted. it seems the only posts that dare challenge obama the great and actually get posted are the ridiculous rants that for instance claim he's a muslim. seems the media is pulling out all stops to get him elected.
You probably saw this in an email that's been forwarded by an Obama smearer. This was a piece of satire. It was written by John Semmens. He has a satire article called "Semi-News" and some dummy took it from his column and started forwarding it as an email of truth. Obama WAS NOT on Meet the Press on September 7th.
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/'Meet_the_Press'_transcript_for_Sept_7_2008_obama_us_flag_stance And lets use some common sense. If you really beleive this slander to be true then why in the world would Colin Powell be endorsing Obama. Lets use what God gave us "smarts". That would be the general populous way of saying intelligence.
Well Melisa of Laf LA, I am a Viet Nam vet and I do not salute, stand and face the flag, nor do I pledge my allegiance to it.  I will not pledge to act against any others our elected officials find convenient to label as terrorists while we kill or are responsible for killing hundreds of thousands, totally unassociated with the attack in NYC. I love this country and most of the people in it, (well maybe half), it's the government I hate.  They are the thieves we need to reign in.  Since when does any "Joe the plumber" have an economic interest in the middle east or elsewhere as this government takes our tax dollars and disrupts other country's balance of power so the rich of this country can pilfer their resources, then label them as terrorists, and send the poor to fight and die for their pocketbooks?  No, it's Wall Street and other large corporate CEO's who are raping the common American.  We are getting closer to an all out revolution of violent proportions if this isn't changed, I promise you that.

Melisa in LA: you should check out the veracity of things before you cite them as supposed fact.  Check out Snopes. What you said never happened.  http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/stance.asp
Below is the url for the transcript for the September 7, 2008 episode of "Meet the Press" where you'll find all the facts as they happened and not according to Melisa.  Notice that neither the guest list nor the discussion even remotely resembles what Melisa wrote about so convincingly “NOT”.  I actually watch this program so I was surprised to read about it in "Melisa, Laf., LA" blog.  I'm actually depressed knowing that people like her have the right to vote.  Let me remind you Melisa that as a Citizen you also have duty to do your part and not participate in distorting facts.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26590488/
Thank you Ross and Brent for your response to Melisa. I am quite tired of reading Internet stories that are so diragotory to our candidates. stories that are not checked out. some obviuosly stupid. I a an undecided independant voter. I may not even vote in this election. that would be the first time in 40 years. It's not that I think our candidates are bad, I just don't agree with some of what their policies would be.

God Bless America.  Love It Or Leave It.
Who is telling the truth? I became a US Citizen 20 years ago, and I absolutely respect and love the ideals that MY country stands for, if the Obamas do not love this country and do not appreciate the opportunities they have been given then how can we elect him to be our President? and if he McCains represent only the upper class of this country and look out only for the wealthy then how can he be our President? I am so confused. I will vote because that is my civic responsability, but I wish i was better informed with the truth.
PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN
Melisa, Laf., LA (Sent Friday, October 24, 2008 10:38 AM)I do not belive the so called quoted comments of Ms. Melisa. If this were the case the main stream media and the McCain Camp would have jumped on it a long time ago. It is truely American to fight for what you believe in but as an American I belive in truth and honor in fighting. When we defile someones character for the sole purpose of making a point it looks bad and teaches our children that anything goes. Where is our honor as a people and a nation? When you interview for a job the employer asks what can you bring to the table. They don't ask you to tell them how bad the other candiates maybe or to speculate on their character. Most people go in with the best they have to offer and hope their light shines brighter than the rest. I don't know anyone who respects a coward. All of you who use the politics of personal distruction to gain favor in any arena are truly going to reap what you have sewn. We will all have to answer one day for our actions toward one another. Think about it people, have the poltical actions and comments of the past year really made any of you proud? Were their times when you have hung your head in utter disbelief and shame at the sand box mentality? Well I have. I am proud to be an American but sometimes we act like Americans in training!

Honstly, i do not know the age of most of the people writing here, But for most part it seem that every one (or at leats most) here has stated comment with a clear and intellangent mind... Whether iranian support Obama or not, honestly I could care less. What I do care about is that the world around us see us in a different light. The US policy abroad has failed for the last 8 years, Yes i know that the Bush (43) years began with 9/11, i was there in New York city when it happened, and the anger and rage that ran thourgh my body im sure is the same sentement that most everyone felt... but an eye for eye on leave everyone blind... and we have oppressed the world 100 time more then they have oppressed us...

I just want a world of peace, a world where it does not matter who or where or what you are... we are all human and we all bleed RED...

Altough i am not fully statisfed with either choice for president, i know that obama will make a full attempt to bring peace...and too me that speaks of much higher volumes that anything else...

We must stop thinking that we are the cops of the world, i am not saying to turn our back on the issues that effect global stability...

but if we dont make some changes in the way we think, there might not be much of the world left for us to change...

i am 29 and still (if god allows me) have qutie a bit of time in this world... if we spent a quarter of the time and resoruces that we spent Iraq on the issues of climate and the economy we would porably not be in the sitution we are in now...

Washington has forgotten about what is important..Our Future... ecologially and education
Melisa:  The e-mail you refer to was actually copied from a Satirical column written on October 27, 2007.  It appeared in the Arizona Conservative in a column entitled, "Seii-News -- A Satirical Look at Recent News" and written by John Semmens.  It is clearly intended to be humor.

www.factcheck.org (bipartisan website) pointed out the false story with the following comments:  "This is a dediculous example of how false stories are started, spread and, in many cases, believed."  The writer continued, "In this case, the joke is the message falsely quoting Obama, and it's on whomever is gullible enough to believe it's true."

Melisa, when you read an email which seems too rediculous to be true (regardless of whether it comes from the right or left), it probably is.  Many uninformed Americans take whatever they read in an email as the absolute truth if it suits their cause.  If it doesn't suit their cause, then it must be a lie.  Frankly, pretty much all the rediculous comments are in fact stretching the truth in hopes that those comments will stick with the reader.  This particular one "stuck" on you, Melisa.

gpr105
IMHO, you can't "negotiate" successfully from a position of weakness.  Obama is inherently seen as a "weaker" candiate (on foreign policy), that's why Iran, Venezuela , Russia, etc. would rather work with him.  The tyrants of the world need to know that there may be consequences, or they have no reason to bend.  Anyone that thinks talking, without the threat of real consequences, will have any chance of solving the worlds problems is naive. These are not "nice" guys who really want to "do the right thing."   Iran wants to, in their own words, "blow Isreal off the map."  Anyone think that a handshake and an agreement are going to change that?
I have known many Iranians.  The regular population was very pro-west until George W. Bush declared them to be in the "axis of evil".  George W. Bush is not only unpopular here, but everywhere.  What baffles me is that he was elected a second time.

I found this telling too:
"If McCain became president and wanted to attack Iran, the international community would not stand behind him, but if Obama became president and wanted to attack Iran, the international community would stand behind him," he said, but asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue.

Looks like McCain is perceived to be just as unpopular.
To Melissa in Layfayette and anyone else who comes across e-mails in their inbox--The e-mail and info therein about Barack Obama and Meet the Press and his stance on the national anthem is all false.  All info is a lie.  There is no Dale Lindsborg with the Washington Post and no General Bill Ginn as an interviewer on Meet the Press.  Everything you posted was a hoax.  PLEASE CHECK YOUR FACTS.  THIS IS HOW DESPERATE THE RIGHT WING IS TO KEEP A GOOD, INTELLIGENT, FAMILY MAN FROM BECOMING THE NEXT PRESIDENT.  Find the truth at snopes.com

(Melisa, Laf., La.)  should feel ashame of herself for posting such BS. whoever that person is. by posting such a pile of bs. I don't care which candidate you're supporting, but if you,re going to stoop to such a level and spread that amount of hatred. and try to pass it on as truth. you should be investigated. and you just gave me a reason to switch my vote, I'm voting for Obama. Thanks for the motivation.
Let us get the reasoning straight. First of all John McCain will make a great president and along with Sara Palin serving if he passes away, this country will be in good hands for the next 12 years.
So for all of you idiotic enough to believe this, do go out and vote for the republican ticket but realize you won't win.
John and Sara are pushing socialism for the rich to continue the destruction of the middle class. The straight slurpy on this one is...the ruling class believes in reducing the air, water and natural resource consuming majority before the serious battles begin. Check it out for yourself.
Melisa,
That is not a real article. It's just a lame satirical smear article. If you're naive enough to believe that article, I might have a bridge to sell you at a cheap price.
