Black and white South Africans weigh in on U.S. election

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – "America is used to being ruled by a white president," Lucky Mathye, a 22-year-old police reservist told me in the suburbs of Johannesburg. "America looks like a worldwide boss. They want all the power in the world and they don’t want to share it. Maybe [Barack] Obama will be a peacemaker."

South Africans of all colors are watching the upcoming U.S. elections very closely. America is the world’s oldest constitutional democracy, while South Africa is one of the youngest.

Lucky Mathye is paying close attention to the U.S. election from Johannesburg, South Africa.

Yet, the parallels between the two countries are often striking, and sometimes ironic. Both countries have a history of segregation and racism. America has a white majority and black minority; in South Africa it is the other way around.

Looking for a change
While the brutal system of minority rule known as apartheid was at its height in South Africa in the 1960s, the United States led the way toward racial equality at home with leaders such as Martin Luther King speaking out against legal segregation and prejudice. With the election of Nelson Mandela as president of a democratic South Africa in 1994, the nation joined the United States in the global struggle against racism and for human freedom.

But, as Lucky pointed out to me, many South Africans have lost their respect for Washington following the war in Iraq and global economic meltdown, which many blame on the United States.

"I like [John] McCain," said Simon Ngobeni said. The 29-year-old is a driver and domestic worker who came to Johannesburg from the poverty-stricken northern region of South Africa to look for work for him and his wife Bongi and their small daughter Princess. "But those Republicans are the ones that have been governing now for the last 10 years, so I think a change would be good."

Simon Ngobeni, a truck driver in South Africa, has strong opinions about the U.S. presidential election.

Race – still a pervasive issue
Many Americans appear reticent about discussing race, preferring not to mention the subject at all, or speaking in carefully coded phrases where the true meaning of what is meant is obvious, but difficult to pin down in an exact sense.

Here in South Africa, the history of racial conflict has been so clear and such a pervasive reality that talking about race is much more open. The divisions between black and white have been such an undeniable truth of the society for over 350 years that people here prefer to acknowledge their existence rather than to pretend that they don’t exist.

And Simon is no exception. Without my even asking, the black South African brought up the subject himself. "I don’t care whether McCain is white or Barack Obama is black. In America there is a good democracy so black and white is the same."

Lucky, on the other hand, is perhaps a little less sure that race doesn’t matter in the presidential elections, or certainly in its meaning for America’s place in the broader world, or for troubled countries on the continent like neighboring Zimbabwe.

"Obama is black, so he will be better for Africa. All African countries will support him, even Mugabe," said Lucky, also a black South African who was referring to President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. He paused to make his point clearer. "Mugabe hates white people because he thinks they are crooks and they want to steal his land. But with Obama maybe he will negotiate a settlement." Under Mugabe’s leadership, white-owned farms were seized by the government with the stated aim of benefiting landless black Zimbabweans, but instead, sharp declines in production have left the agricultural-based economy in tatters and many Zimbabweans are struggling to get by or have fled the country.

‘Obama will be better for us in Africa’
A few streets away I spoke to IT consultant Christian Barr, 35, in his small home office, surrounded by his two black Labradors "Cisco" and "Google."  As a white South African, who once served in the country’s armed forces during the last years of the violent and chaotic transition to democracy, he knows from first-hand experience just how painful change has been here.

Hamilton Wende
Christian Barr follows the ins and outs of the U.S. election from Johannesburg, South Africa.

"There’s always more about Barack Obama on the Internet than there is about John McCain – so that tells you something right away.  I think he will be the first black president of America, and that is something to consider when you think of our history here in South Africa," Christian said.

"Obama will be better for us in Africa.  I am concerned about the conservative Americans – the Midwest states, they might vote for McCain. Whatever happens, though, Africans must come up with their own inventive ways to benefit from the U.S." he added.

As might be expected, Obama wins hands down in the popularity stakes among South Africans of all races. A Reader’s Digest Global Poll of over 17,000 people in 17 countries found overwhelming support for Obama in South Africa in particular – with 70 percent supporting the Illinois senator over McCain.

And as a journalist who travels frequently across the continent, I’ve seen widespread support for Obama among Africans of all stripes. In fact, a BBC World Service poll found 82 percent of respondents supported Obama in Kenya – not surprising since it was the birthplace of his father. But Obama was also favored by 71 percent of respondents in Nigeria – sub-Saharan Africa’s most populous nation.

For Africans it is simple, as Lucky said in a final thought:  "We want to taste the fruit of a black president!"

Reading the comments by Ellington Carson tells me that we need to focus on education in the US.  In his circles, critical thinking skills are lost.  The most respected Americans, such as Warren Buffet, Paul Volcker and Colin Powell back Obama. Just as Colin Powell indicated yesterday, Obama is the type of President that we need at this time--an educated, thoughtful, decisive and steady leader!  These characteristics set a great example for all of us.
It is useless to leave a message here if you are not an Obama follower.  Save yourself sometime writing and just gp vote for McCain.
I applaud Arturo in Chicago.  Spot-on.

I am a veteran and have served 3 tours overseas.  I know what it is like to represent our country outside of its borders.  However, I see classic liberal hand-wringing in a few of the posts here.  Yes, our image abroad does matter, but sometimes you need to stop whining "what is wrong with us and ask:  if they don't like us, what is wrong with THEM?"

Obamamania has sucked the pragmatism right out of a lot of brains.  This (very) junior Senator would fail Economics 101.  Are you guys sure you want him running the show?  Oh sure, he's "cool" and "other countries like him".  Go ahead and vote for him, you will reap what you sow.  No one has ever taxed their way out of a recession, but Obama thinks he can be the first.  No thanks.  I'd rather not participate in your socialist experiment.
Does anyone even realize how solialist-leaning Barack Obama is????? Seriously, the majority of the people supporting him are naive, and ignorant to the fact that they are supporting a person, along with his wife, who speak words almost identical to radicals and have many of the smae ideas that are steps twards socialism! Like someone said above, vote for personal freedoms, Obama/Biden will just take a lot of those away...We DO have the right to have these freedoms you know???

and in response to everyone attacking "Gene." I think what he or she is trying to say is that we don't need other countries who have constantly benefitted from the U.S to try and influence a nation's choice. Like them, we have a choice, let us make it whether it be a mistake or not! They're getting our money regardless of who runs the country. For those of you who think we are worse off than some places, look up Third World Countries like those in Africa and tell me if you can even make a slight comparison.

In regards this article, racism is no longer a major public issue, like with anything these days, the street now goes both ways!! Lets move on from this.

Rights, Freedom and Choice for me the next 8 years. McCain/Palin!

Obama supporters please get beyond naivity. Stop looking past the policies/plans of him by thinking you are hearing the voice of an angel. Remember that he has plans for not just the country, but the world and that is a radicalist and socialist idea. This has nothing to do with race, gender. It is politics and if you would look at he facts, look at the past and present, you too would realize how much better off we'd be in a McCain administration. STOP trying to run against a president who has already served his terms!

don't pay any attention to Gene from Woodward Oklahoma, he's not too bright.
I'm from Oklahoma, born and raised and we are good people.
"Most of the people I am around, at work or at home, are all concerned with the general Marxism flavor of the Obama platform. We foresee difficult times for Americans, less rights, more government, more tax. I will vote for personal freedoms everytime."
Terry W. Reed, Alvin, Texas

"It appears that the comments from Africans favor having Obama as President.  ACORN must be working there too.  Let's buy Obama a one way ticket to Africa and let him preside there.  Let him "spread the wealth" in Kenya. It would be great if he would take Pelosi and Reid with him."
Arturo, Chicago, Ill.

Can we say racist coding??? First to Terry you obviously have no clue "Marxism" actually it would be Marxist ideology, which has nothing to do with what you might have intended to say which would have been "Socialist" had you had a few collegiate classes in Political Science you would know the obvious differences...Oh is that a crystal ball in your hand or the clarity of empty space in your brain...You "foresee difficult times," what are you a clairvoiant, wait that would be impossible since you dwelling in one of the most religious areas in the country and well unless we havent read from the same scriptures...clairvoyance is against Christian beliefs am I right. Besides you need to get a clue...wait make that a capital C, L, U, E...we are in difficult times, every since W, let Cheney direct decisions and lie to the American people about an illegal war...if we were any other country that invade the soverign soil of another nation would be hunting that governments leaders down as war criminals...think about it

And for you Mr. Illinois man, have you ever heard of Liberia, America in its shame sent thousands of black Americans to that country with with thought we (White America will make up for our sins and send black children born into slavery back to a land they can call their own...) sounds like another racist coded statement...Obama is no more African than he is any less a White American as well. He is an intelligent band that has both the white and black culture to draw both his strengths and weakness from or did you forget his mother, grandmother and grandfather were white and he was raised by them in Kansas! Get a clue bud, and take your head out of your a$#

Really, no one really cares what someone from another country thinks about the election.  They all hate or dislike us anyway, always have even before George W Bush.  We have spent billions of dollars not to metion the lives of soldiers/diplomats/businesspersons/advisors etc.. helping most of these countries and they are still whinning like a welfare mama. They don't mind sucking off of the teat of uncle sam, so they should keep their mouth occupied by sucking and keep from talking.  As Winston Churchill once said , leave it to the Americans to try everythiing first before doing the right thing.  Key thing to remember is we ain't perfect but at least we try, not like most of the worthless European nations, like France.
WE COULD CARE LESS WHAT THE REST OF THE WORLD THINKS!
TRY MEDDLING IN YOUR OWN GOVERNMENT AND STAY OUT OF OURS!
GENE, WOODWARD OKLAHOMA
First of all, I am a veteran. It is important what the rest of the world thinks about us.  I have traveled throughout the world in the past years and we are hated by so many countries. We were even advised not to walk on certain streets because they hated Americans mainly because of Bush.
I talked to some of them and explained that my views were in no ways the same as his and that a lot of Americans hated him more than they did. They also commented on the invasion of Iraq. I too feel that it is a senseless war and that Bush and any person that supports this war are @$$holes.  We need someone to straighten out this mess and that can improve our image with other countries.  I feel Obama would do that.

I'm a combat veteran as well and my opinion of your opinions are horse hockey. Perhaps you hate President Bush and believe the war in Iraq is senseless but you don't have people shooting at you while in your home. I haven't seen a roadside bomb go off here in America lately. If Obama is elected and all the change he is talking about doesn't happen will all you dems finally face the facts that you have it pretty good even if you are unwilling to help this great country?
A correction: America is NOT the world's "oldest constitutional democracy". America is a Constitutional Republic. There is a difference. Feel free to look it up.

Basically people seem to like Obama either because:

A: He's black (partly) and they regard being black (even partly) as a positive thing over being white. This is unarguably racism. Don't like that observation? Too bad. Pretend I just said being white was better. Ahh! Now you see it! Good.

B: He's not George W Bush or John McCain.  Granted they are terrible in many ways. But is Obama better? Will his agenda drive America further into debt? Into more wars? Does he flipflop on issues (like Iran/FISA/funding/negative campaigning, etc)? Does he sabre rattle (consider his comments on Afghanistan, Iran and Darfur)?  Does he show even a glimmer of economic understanding with a regime of heavy spending, more regulation and tax increases?

If America continues its economic decline, as I'm quite certain it will under an Obama presidency, don't expect those "fruits" to taste very sweet.

Change is definitely needed. But be careful what you wish for. Consider Bob Barr as a true alternative to the status quo. And btw, he's rumored to be part black also.
Once again ... campaign after campaign ... the Republican "PUPPETS" are at it again. You all say the same programmed BULL. If one thing doesn't work to your favor, you switch up to some other programmed rhetoric. Try being independent thinkers. Do you believe that stupid stuff you say? Compare the candidates. This time you've met your match. You've got an INTELLIGENT (CUM LAUDE grad)CANDIDATE, RICH CANDIDACY (raised $150 Mil in Sept. ALONE) and the WORLD on his side. He is playing by the rules set by the cheating republicans of the past 2 terms. Why don't you guys just bend over and grin and bear it ... LOL!
Why is it that many remarks said, "like welfare and spreading the wealth" the Democrats call racist remarks????? Seems they are always using that term "racism" when they can't answer a charge!!!!! It's NOT just blacks who receive welfare, or don't the Demos know that?????  I am NOT for spreading the wealth, killing babies, fraudulent voting, etc. I am scared to death of what is in store for our country with Obama. Can't believe that is has been made into racial though!!!! 90 percent of blacks are voting for him. What if 90 percent of whites voted for Mccain??? See, I think it is "racial" that 90 percent of blacks are voting for Obama~!!  It is a scary, scary world!!! Socialism at it's worst is what we will see!!! Do some of you people simply NOT believe in workign and actually EARNING your way in life...Blows my mind to think that we are going to have a leader who is going to "take away" from someone who works and "give freely" to someone who does not!!!!!
just another distortion of perception. African citizens think the republicans rule: Did they miss the part where the dems are in control of the congress, senate and the house of  representatives. hummm
I would sure hate to be McCain or anyone who worked for him when this is over.
Obama may be a nice guy now but.....

Aaron Phillips:
Not only there were blacks here when this country was born, they were the backbone of the white folks that enslaved them, to work the land, tend the crops and raise their children to name a few.

To say that this country was born of white man only's strive is outrages.
Look at history and read the whole book not just part of it. Wake up, it is 2008 not 1908!
I think Obama will be the next US President and first minority to be elected President of this great nation.Mccain's judgements are going to make him loose this election.First of all Gov. palin was his wosrt judgement call and this will cost him big time.
comment in this article;
"Obama will be better for us in Africa.  I am concerned about the conservative Americans – the Midwest states, they might vote for McCain. Whatever happens, though, Africans must come up with their own inventive ways to benefit from the U.S." he added.
Politics stop at the low water mark. If Africa thinking a black U.S. president is good for them, what does that say about what is good for America. A U.S. presidents first concern should be for his country and not what is good for other countries on the planet.
It doesn't matter weather or not Obama is black or white...what does matter is his firm believe that redistibution of wealth is charity...charity is what I'm willing to do to help someone else...what he does is theft...period...I can't believe how many people actually believe this man..especailly after looking at his voting record..or the fact that how do you give a 95% tax cut when 30% aren't even paying taxes.
It seems to me that a lot of people that post on here must watch hanity and his lies.We lost a great newsman because he reported about how bush got out of vietnam because of his political ties. That reporter was ran out of the media. Its time we took our country back from the rush limbaues and hanity's of the world and started thinking on our own instead of being told how and what to think.
Perhaps everyone will get their wish and we will usher in the "change president" and his policies of wealth redistribution. Remember this when the United States is as "economically advanced" as the African nations. I wonder which African model we wish to emulate - Zimbabwe, The Congo, or Nigeria (talk about corrupt white folks)? As usual - be careful what you wish for!
Just what the USA needs, to follow S. Africa's and Zimbabwe's example--starvation, poverty, and crime that is off the scale.
"Our country was started by people of white European descent, who created one of the most amazing politican systems in the history of mankind, a system that eventually led to this historical point, we have a presidential candidate (who would be considered white in most of Africa) who has black ancestary." comment by Aaron Phillips.

Mr Phillips have you studied the histories of other civilizations or any history at all. The "founding" fathers did not "create one of the most amazing politican systems in the history of mankind" but actually borrowed elements from existing and previous governments and adapted it to their own purposes which has been modified throughout the years. Remember the US is a relatively new country compared to other nations and as was mentioned in another comment - people should really know the meaning of labels such as Marxist before throwing them around to describe a person's political ideology. And for reference I am a black woman (yes I wrote black) who has travelled the world and seen firsthand the reputation Americans have (guilt by association). I have also experience racism and will vote for the best candidate to serve my needs and the needs of this country regardless of the lineage of the person.
Commenets like that from Gene indicate what the rest of the world call "American double standard).  To Gene, the rest of the world has no right to care about what Americans do.  But Americans do have the right to overthow any government anywhere in the world when they do not like it, or when they want their resources.  Can you imagine Americans being held in Iran prison on just suspision, without try for so many years.  Oh no, hell will break loose.  George W will not hesitate to sent all fleets, tanks, F16s, and all those destructive war equipments to go to war in the name of justice, and the Republicans including Lou Dobbs will sure gladly support him.  What happened to justice in Guantanamou.

The Socialists have destroyed our History.  Harriet Tubman the third most famous person in American history????

IF YOU THINK YOU NEED A BLACK PRESIDENT, VOTE FOR HIM.

I don't care who Africans think will be better for Africa. I want a president who will place the interests of US citizens first and foremost.
I will never understand why we Americans feel driven to police the world, correct all of its ills and send huge sums of money to everyone else and not spend it on our own. Lets try just fixing our own problems and let some other country take the lead for awhile. I wish we could start a national movement AMERICA FIRST! Take care of our poor first, our homeless, our sick, our elderly, our unemployed our streets our bridges, our rail roads, our schools, our dams, our cities, our boarders, etc.
Who cares what South Africa wants for the U.S.  Should we be taking any input from a country on the verge of sliding into anarchy?  What have they ever done to improve the world (besides produce excellent artillery)?  Their health minister is on record as promoting garlic as a cure for AIDS!!
The fact that many readers who are posting comments along the lines of either lack of concern for what citizens of other countries think, or resentment at their having an "opinion" highlights what may be wrong with American thinking.

I imagine that one of the first steps toward political wisdom is the realization that others have valid opinions.  These opinions must be respected.  I am not suggesting that any opinion should be bindly adopted, but one must "eat the apple an discard the core".

I would like to make a comment I know that their is no one that can make an end to the mess that we are in but I do have a question about Bahama Why is he pro abortionist why will he allow innocent babies to be killed right after birth & why doesn't he support the constitution as written by our for fathers
There are some who insinuate that S. Africans are for Barak Obama because he is black.  If that's true why do Europeans overwhelmingly support him?  I'm black and I'd be lying to say I wouldn't be proud to have a black President.  But the fact that he's black is just the icing.  He is the better choice for the job, and what makes this country so great is that White voters realize it too!!! When we stop discussing race so much, that's when we've reached a true democracy.  The next time a black person runs for President, it won't be such a novelty.
Has everyone forgotten that when the Blacks took control of the government in south africa, they took away all the land and businesses form the Whites.
Can it happen here, YOU BET!
"Obama is black, so he will be better for Africa.
Obama will be better for us in Africa.  I am concerned about the conservative Americans – the Midwest states, they might vote for McCain. Whatever happens, though, Africans must come up with their own inventive ways to benefit from the U.S." he added.
It will be the end of America and all the countries that have there hands out will beo on their own.
I don;t care if obama is black, I care about the issues, I care about where they stand on those issues, and obama's political courage test shows is is not what he says he is.  He has ofter changed his views to to an audience just to please them, but his and Mccains records do speak for himself.  When Mccain loses the Election is only proves that good guys finish last. Who cares what france , germany, iran, russia or Africa thinks fo obama, Its America's that decide, its just some of them do'nt research thier canidate of choice very well.
It is a shame that the Republican party has become new Klan party. They represent way too much hate for any decent human being to be associated with.
First I'd like to say I'm Independent (for all those waiting with baited breath at your keyboards to rip me a new one for my next comments).

Does everyone here not realize that it doesn't matter which one is President because whichever it is... (Demo/Repub), Congress will be majority the other side.  And nothing gets to the President if Congress doesn't pass it first.   So all Obama fans will have a majority Republican house and all McCain fans will have majority Democrat house.   Really, which is better?

Not to mention that the last 8 years have been majority Democrats passing things before Bush even sees it, not to mention the war in Iraq.   Do you really think Bush was the sole hand in that?  For anyone to think ANY president has supreme power enough to spend the money and deploy the people to create what we have today all by himself/herself is foolish and need to take government classes all over again.
Seriously I think its time for other nations to step up and deal with there own problems and stop leaning on the U.S. for security and the rest.
There is a lot of things that the U.S. needs do in our own country (health care, education, security, ect.)  then dealing with other nations problems.
This is what the next president should be focused on, not on world problems or whats happening in Africa.
Some people say Obama's race shouldn't be an issue (although he is only half Black he nevertheless identifies himself with the Black culture not the White)but they ignore the fact that during the primaries Blacks aften voter in the mid to high 90% for him making it quite obvious that for Balcks race is indeed THE issue! Therefore White voters should vote accordingly and support McCain!
Karl Kettler (Sent Monday, October 20, 2008 12:26 PM)

Karl, Blacks voted for White men in the past in the mid to high 90%...Have you ever heard of Bill Clinton, a white man?  How about Lyndon Johnson, a white man?  Maybe you should stop trying to find a reason to inject race in our support of Barack Obama and realize that many Blacks support Democrats because we believe in the policies they support.  Many of us believe in universal health care, many of us a pro-choice, many of us believe the middle class should get some of the same tax breaks as the upper class, many of us believe in fixing our public schools instead of throwing them away.
Voting for any person because you prefer that color is idiotic.  The last fifty years of racial adjustment has obviously been for nothing because it appears that race will decide this election.  Every time I hear someone say its time we had a black president, it reminds me of exactly the issues that defined a man prior to the civil rights movement.  Obama or McCain will be a good president or bad based on his heart, mind, and integrity - NOT HIS COLOR.

I fear we are in for the worst of it.
I do need to state that I intend to vote for Obama though I live in a state that will definitely go to McCain.  I get along with people from all walks of life and I had someone tell me what I consider to be a very enlightened reason why Obama will not win in Texas... Oil Drilling and Energy.  It was stated to me that in East Texas, too many people fear for their livelihood....  Jobs... Food on the table... Roof over the family...  I may disagree but I can definitely respect that... Race... It saddens me that we have come so far but we still have farther to go...
Why are so many white people afraid of Obama becoming president?  Because he is Black?  Do you think he will do unto you what the USA has done to the Blacks, Hispanics, Indians, etc. for the past 400 years?  I don't think so.  Every system, including ours has checks and balances and if McCain or Obama wins and they get out of hand, we have what is called impeachment (we should have used it on Bush when he lied about 911)  Iraq had nothing to do with 911.  If Iraq didn't have oil or Saddam (revenge thing)we would not be there.  This war blew up in Bush's face.  We are the ones who will have to solve it. Obama is fit to lead, it doesn't matter what color he is.  He has 3 times the education McCain and Palin have yet they still want to say he is unqualifed.  This is outrageous.
Nathan Hale, you are entitled to your backward and ill informed position because, yes, it is your country. I find it interesting that a country like the US which has NO survellance system to detect the exact number of HIV infections can come up with bogus statistics regarding the HIV/AIDS rate in countries like South Africa. For your information, the US government hardly ever does something for nothing. Almost all the money going towards helping with HIV/AIDS in Africa is for research purposes. In other words Africans are wonderful gunea pigs. Africans couldn't care less if individuals such as yourself are interested in their "respect/goodwill". However, you should know that this is not a situation of the rich helping the poor. Americans with HIV/AIDS get the benefit of knowing that the drugs they are prescribed are safe for human use, courtesy of "ungrateful Africans". Enjoy!
We all need change regardless of race which is a constant issue in America and certain parts of the world I'm pretty sure everybody is so tired of Bush 's failed policies and a fresh breeze of your ideas are more than welcome..forget the color and focus on the substance.Good luck America and God bless the whole world.
(Smile)Wow Wow Wow !! very interesting to note, that there are americans, who, sorry to say, seem either not to know much about history, or as matter of convenience, choose to ignore truth. Over the past decades, it is The Great US of A, that has taken on the role of God, in the lives of many.  America, that has twisted the arm of truth and justice, and have destroyed countries, and the lives of many. America, who has repeatedly benefited from spoils in form human resource and material wealth, as a result of oppressive measures, namely slavery, racism, the design of poverty among minority groups. So, if the truth must be told, America cannot be blameless, and those of you who will deny these atrocities, are without an active conscience.  However, the past is the past, and it would indeed be wise, for us all to look toward the future, and make it work.  at the end of the day, we all need each other, and there is more than enough, for everyone.  so really, there ain't no need for the selfishness and greed that's going around. for the betterment of the entire human race, we need to put aside our differences aside, and do all within our power to create wealth, health, prosperity and happiness, in every nook and cranny of the world. Let's all aim at summoning the blessings of God upon every nation, and not just America.  After-all, America isn't the only country in the world. I am all the way here in Jamaica (Caribbean), and sure, we got more than our fair share of problems, but hey, all is in vain. we suffer as a people, as a nation, and the entire global community, because we allow ourselves to be overcome by greed. by our own selfish desires. we have allowed love, compassion, empathy, to die a very painful and terrible death. That too gonna suffer a similiar fate, if we don't change our hearts and minds. There has been far too much hate going around, for far too long. This has to end now. Let's all check ourselves.  We just got to. Peace and love to all.  One Love.
president bush has taken america 100 years back
his crazy policies has alienated america from the rest of the world and it is time now obama is elected to restore peace and stability to the whole world

right now america is a rogue super power and obama is one person who can bring america from the cold and it to world community
the obama/biden boys have many duped and show how we as a people judge ("young, articulit, good looking" Joe Biden) on the outward appearence. also who really has the racist voters? many blacks are voting for obama for the simple fact of the color of his skin.
Having lived in South Africa when Apartheid was at it's height and now having lived in America for over 40 years. Hopefully in two weeks America will finally get it right. It felt so good to vote for Sen. Obama today. And, I am caucasian and I live in Florida.
Hamilton,

"Many blame the US"  Do a little more research and write a meaningful story.  I recently had meetings with gentlemen from South Africa.  They are interested in tthe election and worried about the pending decline in US status.  I cannot forget being told, "they all protest down with America, never considering that the US provies more help for AIDs ridden impoverished African nations than anyone else
Since when do we care what the rest of the world prefers in our elections?  Too many odd distractions and subliminal 'nudges' from other countries interested in 'this' election.  History aside, something not quite right here.....Play it off any way you like, something is afoot and it isn't good; and I really don't care if one agrees with me or not, it does not change facts or the oddities and blatant racial hypocrisy in this election.  According to the Dems, all Republicans are racist, one way or the other?  How dare you?  That very idea is racist.
I think that one should listen to Obama's message more closely - if all you want is "Change" in your pockets, then vote for him. If you want to work hard and keep more of your own money instead of voting in a bunch of spending Dems, then you should be looking past the liberal media blitz and vote for McCain - maybe you'll end keeping dollars in your pocket instead of "Change"...
I just want a President who is a peacemaker and not a warmongering profiteer.   I want global stability just as much as anyone, but you don't get it by creating wars for economic and political advantages of the few -- you get it by helping the many.  After 9/11 we had the greatest opportunity to take the higher path and we blew it  -- but what can we expect from President Select -- not President Elect.
All this is is racism. Everyone thinks that African's shouldn't have a say so. Well, everyone is wrong. African's can be concerned about what is going on in the U.S. Think about it like this, what if they want to come to the U.S. and live over here. Don't you think they would seriously care about what kind of state they were coming to or what kind of person would be ruling over them. What if the person ruling over them wouldn't like them coming over to the United States? I mean really people, think before you speak.

And about the voting...No one is voting for Obama just because he is black. And no one is voting for McCain just because Obama is black and if that is the case, then GROW UP because the racism stuff in this world needs to stop. Yes, I'm white but I LOVE black people. I'm for them 100 percent!!!! But I don't want my people voting for Obama just because he is black. I think people should vote for him because he is the one who finally wants to bring our soldiers home!!! That just makes me happy to hear someone say that they want to bring them home. Because I know I'm ready to see my ex-boyfriend. And I'm sure y'all are ready to see someone y'all know over there. So please people, just think before you speak. And try to end the racism.
Who, cares now of days if your are Rep or Dem, it's all of about who can do the Job.  And finally the Rep are seeing that just becuase your family has always voted Rep don't mean you have to.  Vote for the better one not for someone that is a Rep.
