Israelis looking for stronger U.S. leadership

TEL AVIV – This American election has fascinated the planet more than any other in living memory; because it concerns us all more than any other. America’s war is the world’s war and Wall Street’s disaster has infected the globe.

So it is with all the more consternation that observers here regard their putative saviors.

In Israel, with its famously combative and unrestrained media, it is the American system that is under the microscope as much as its representatives. Here, the U.S. presidential race is seen as the bitter old guy and the dimwit versus the untried young guy and the windbag.

VIDEO: Israelis looking for American leadership

And the big issue in Israel is: What kind of a system is it if these are the best they can muster? When the insults halt, the votes are cast and the dust settles, many say that is the question that needs to be answered. Is this really the best America can come up with? Isn’t there a better way to do things?

Long list of issues
From Israel’s narrow focus, America’s next leader is critical.

There is a whole list of short to medium term issues on Israel’s table that most urgently concern American national interests and need intelligent American guidance and leadership: Will Iran get nuclear weapons? Will Israel attack Iran to prevent this? Will Hamas take over the rest of Palestinian territory? Will Hezbollah and Israel go back to war? Will Syria make peace with Israel? Will Israel and Fatah continue their Palestinian peace process?

And all of these issues while Russia is reintroducing itself as a key element in the Middle East by allegedly rearming Iran and Syria. Some of these issues could embroil the entire region in war, others could make a major contribution to overall peace. Foreign observers are scared.

Courting the Jewish vote
So far, none of the presidential or vice-presidential debates have passed without a mention of Israel. And each candidate has made certain to reassure Jewish voters that Israeli is a tried and true ally that must, and will be, defended. On this, there doesn’t seem to be any light between the candidates. For most Israeli analysts, this is a given.

Ironically, the only real debate on this issue is in Israel itself, where most politicians want unquestioning American support, but a vocal minority believes that this unstinting support is actually harmful to Israel; they say Israel needs to stop relying on America.

Only then, they say, will Israel find the need to compromise on key stumbling blocks to peace like full withdrawal from the West Bank.

It was a truism that Israelis favored the old war-horse, Sen. John McCain. But now polls show that the race is more neck-and-neck as far as who Israelis favor.

Looking for a leader, not a stumbling giant
Israel, and its neighbors, need a strong, stable, smart, involved America. What it sees in the American election campaign, especially in the vacuous, talking-point dominated debates, worries everybody – it appears to be a weak, dumb, uninvolved stumbling giant.

It’s a common refrain to hear foreigners say they don’t like the American government, yet they do like the American people; but they mean it, and they have good reason.

To its great credit, despite its travails, America seems as stable as ever, a rock-solid democracy with a reasonably concerned citizenry.

If Israel is looking for a green lite to attack Iran, it won't get it-yet. There is still time for negotiation, low-level discussions at first, setting the table for high-level negotiations soon after. My feeling is it will not work, as the Iranian mullahs will remain obstinate. ANY strike on Iran will have to involve US warplanes, a massive strike that must negate thier ability to strike back. The problem will be the depth of the facilities that need to be destroyed. There are rumors of the US using bunker-busting, low yield nuclear weapons. There has to be a better way, but using 5 kilotons would accomplish the mission. Troop concentrations, armour, airfields, naval craft, all on the target list. It will take hundreds of planes, and weeks to hammer our point home.
This election will usher in a transfer of power to the new congress. Weak leadership at the Presidential level will create a void congress will fill. Watch the congressional elections. Many incumbents will be replaced in both parties and a new leadership pool will emerge from that group. The future will depend on new blood, new ideas and innovative leadership.
Israelis need to look in the mirror!!
If the Israelis truly want peace they should accept the “Saudis peace initiative” withdraw from the 1967 Palestinian occupied territories, return the Golan Heights to  Syria and the  sliver of Bekka valley located in  the southern part of Lebanon . Otherwise the consequences will be Palestinian  continuation of arm struggle against Israel occupation.
The US must end its unabated support of Israel, whose government is antithetical to US ideals and morals. Israel's racist treatment of Israeli-Arabs and the deplorable conditions created by the occupation are a black stain on our foreign policy.

The whole world opposes us each time we shoot down any UN resolution condemning Israel for its land grabs and human rights violations.
Interesting but need  data and/or deeper information describing why  Israeli sentiment seems to have shifted away from McCain. This is most important as anti Obama elements and undecided Jewish pro Israel voters have hooked onto McCain as THE Israeli candidiate and only true support.  The McCain camp has utilized this well. So what's the "true" story and opinion in Israel?  Thnaks
If Obama gets elected I would venture to say that Israel will be at war with at least Iran because of the lack of leadership and his philosophies.
What the US should focus on in the Middle East Peace talks would be an honest broker for stability in the region. The US government for so long has been so one sided towards Israel and not really focusing at all at the Palestinian situation and their struggle for independence and continued occupation of the Palestinian people by the Isrealis. Until that changes, there is no hope for any peace in that part of the world.
So we are going to use low yield nuclear weapons on another country to stop them from building nuclear weapons?  That will make us look good, we can use low yield nuclear weapons and no one else can.  Yeah that's the ticket.

Israel will be dissapointed. There are no strong leaders running for president in this election. Guessing that Israel ultimately will be under the bus where most of our "friends" ultimately end up> if the pots right.
As Israel goes, so goes the world.  Like it or not.  You can diss Israel.  You can like Israel.  Regardless, it is pivotal.  A strong Israel is in the best interest of the United States and our interests in the Middle East.  Attention on Israel is low right now because of the election and what is happening in the economy.  But after the election, it will be back on the radar.  It would be nice if they were a little more supportive of leaders, Dems or Reps.
Isreal is only interested in its own wellbeing.  They were very happy to endorse Bush's war.  What they truly like about the republicans is their willingness to commit the youth of the U.S.A. as a Jewish proxy force.  Regan's Lebanon adventure, first Bush's gulf war, GW's Iraq war.
Martin Fletcher,is a NBC News Correspondent  who lives in Israel and write HIS opinion based on a few of HIS circle the truth is that the Israelis admire America and it's people .America is a model which most Israelis are always watching  and trying to copy .
The Israelis still support McCain and VERY concern about Barack Hussein Obama especially because of his roots and his connections with his questionable Priest who hates Jews in particular, and Israel too.
If Obama wins, Israel will be isolated.  As a Jew, this scares me; I hope McCain can pull out a victory!
When will you people wake up to realtiy that Obama isn't a leader and this man can't run a dog house.
Who cares what they or any other country thinks. This is America. We have protected Israel for way to long just to cover up th plunder the U.N.(U.S.)did after WWII. I say we give both side the same amount of weapons and let them go at it. I htink the best thing forthe world is to divide it between U.S., Russia and China and rule it that way.
i think ron paul was right about the middle east we don't need to help isreal but we don't need to stand in there way either, if the arabs want peace they need to work for it to.  they have all the land they need.  just look at the geography.  they want isreal to give up more and more land until there ain't no land left.  if the arabs don't want peace then give them a war they won't forget.  if they like terrorism give them more terrorism. the saudi's should be giving more economic aid to the palestanians not the u.s. not purchasing weapons for them.  even the egyptian government tried to keep the palestenians away form there land by blocking those undergound tunnels to there country. Bottom line is you can't force peace on people of war and religion.
Israel stay out of our politics and take care not start a war you can't fight yourself, America wants peace, we don't want warmongers in our Government
If we want true middle east peace it's easily achieved. Stop arming the israeli's to the teeth, cut a deal with the Iranian's saying that if they abandon their Nuke program we will sign a declaration that we will not attack them. Tell the Israelis no more free passes at the UN, were not going to Veto every resolution that comes across the desk about you land grabbing, etc.  Take the Saudi peace plan and build relationships with your neighbors, stop bullying and using the US as your muscle.
The longer it takes Israel to come to peace with Palestinians, the bigger the risk for future confrontation of epic proportion.  Israel did withdraw from Gaza, but had they done it sooner Hamas would not have existed.

Newer groups, more extreme, will replace the ones which are there currently in Arab world, if this issue is not resolved.  Like US, Middle East will also get their versions of Bush (like Iran did in Ahmedijan), a leader, more brash, more arrogant and more extreme than what they have now.

But I am not hopeful, when two doves like Olmert and Abbas can't reach peace then who can ?
Also this race is over for the Whitehouse. Everyone will be voting based of their pocketbooks, and Obama is ahead on economic issues by a mile. Why do you think Mccain only wants to talk about cultural issues.

He's balck, he's got a arabic name, he hangs out with terrorist....

It's a simple choice if you like the way the last 8 years have gone vote for Mccain, if you want a new approach vote for Obama.
Iran doesn't need nuclear weapons because they have the "oil bomb". Any attack by Israel or the US will result in counter attacks on oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. Without these shipments, which amount to something like 25% of the world's oil supply, and with Iran's oil production also withheld, worldwide economic collapse would result.
Our American love of high-tech weapons would be helpless to prevent the sinking of a couple of slow and cumbersome oil tankers and the economic chaos that would result.
The only sane course of action is to negotiate with Iran, who is quite willing to talk unless the precondition is to concede in advance the major issue, stopping all nuclear activities.
maybe these israelis just want us to "bomb, bomb, iran"  that would explain the mccain edge.
When will you all wake up and realize that MCCain is not fit to be a dog catcher???
He will take us and part of the Middle East to war within a year of taking office so that we can kill again and lose more of our young men and women to his idealogy of ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK!!!
We have been there and done that; it has gotten us no where, but worse off than we were 8 years ago here at home and has almost destroyed our respect around the world!!
His ideas and philosophies are behind the times and will NOT move us forward in anything!!!
We need to stop our unilateral support of Isreal while completely ignoring the Arabs.  We need a more even handed approach to Middle East peace so that finally we can get both sides to the bargaining table to make serious efforts at making peace.  Isreal has to give back the lands it has stolen from the Palestinians.

The Isreali buffer zone nonsense sounds too much like Lebensraum to me.  It kind of made sense when the Arabs were going after them with conventional armies, now that the Arabs are doing geurilla warfare that buffer zone have become a liability to peace.  I also detest seeing extremist Jews stealing land and buildings from innocent Palestinians just because they say their idiot bible says they are entitled to it.  And the Jews then wonder why the Palestinians hate them and don't trust them.
Israel is a fascist state that treats Palestinians the same way the Nazi's treated the Jews.  They should be ashamed of themselves.  The have become what they beheld.  Its amazing how the US looks the other way when Israel kills innocent human beings but condemns the Palestinians for defending themselves.  I don’t condone the violence perpetrated by Palestinians either, however the parallels to the US treatment of Indian natives is amazing.  Palestinians have no rights to land ownership, are taxed without representation, have no real freedom of movement and the list goes on.  Obama is the only real chance for the US to get on board with the rest of the world’s view on how Israel really behaves towards its neighbors and the Palestinians.
Hi:

A strong leader, is a leader he can win with out a war. The Iranian regim wants to remain in power in the region for ever, despite its people crying to be free. Iran nuclear power once fulfilled it will become a strong political and military tool in the hand of the regim. It can keep the regime for ever, to creat political un settlement in the area. In my opinion, the best shield to protect Israel, is to promot peace, eduacation and prosperity among the people in the entire middle east region. Then, the Iranian regim can not recruits and brian wash savage people any more. It will be isolated to swim the ocean alone. They will be drowned.
"you people" understand that John McCain is a war monger old man that would surley lead us into a war with Iran "bomb bomb bomb Iran" to quote the man.  War and military is all he knows.  Tragically his sense of honor has gone out the window and his choice of running mate highlights his poor judgement.
Israel is our ally.  Our friend.  What does it say about us, as Americans, if we don't defend our friend?  We stand for democracy?  We stand for freedom?  Who else takes up for those who cannot help themselves?  This is who we are.  To turn our back on this is self-centered and childish and I would hope we are smart enough to be ashamed if we don't elect the leader who has proven time and again he stands for America;  John McCain.
McCain is different from Obama in that he holds a position despite popular opinion versus Obama's constant shifts. If it was up to Obama, we would have left Iraq with our tail between our legs leaving the region in a civil war.  McCain staked his political career on support of taking the right action in the form of "the surge" to stabilize the region rather than a hasty retreat. We have all witnessed the two in action and the results are undeniable. Vote McCain.
skysoldierrecon - You are insane, completely out of your warmongering mind.  Dropping nuclear bombs on Iran?  For what... as a "preemptive" strike?  You wish to annihilate the human race, do you not?  Sites near the bombing will be radioactive for thousands of years, nuclear fallout would be worldwide, and tens of thousands of new cancers and birth defects will be seen yearly for eternity.  You, and people like you, should be locked up.  You are a danger to humanity, and a disgrace to all who seek peace and security.
Who cares what Isreal wants. This is about issues here. Fix the main land.
It's time for America to realize that we are hated throughout the Arab world because of our relationship with Israel and the funds we give them to kill Arabs, and treat Palestinians like we use to treat blacks in the south.  Our media is controlled by Jewish leaders, and we received nothing but bills for Military Aid in the billions for their Army They do not supply us with oil, and yes they are our friends, yes we can protect them, but they must protect themselves, and if they ever want peace with neigbhboring Arab countries, give in and be flexible.  I am not talking about negotiating with the madman president of Iran...
Israel is looking for The U.S. to elect another President that continues to shovel BILLIONS in welfare and more Billions in defense to their blood thirsty war mongering country. If we ever stopped the flood of money to Israel, they would turn on us like rabid dogs.
The Isrealis know that Obama will not support them over the Arab countries.  Don't belive all of the polling and it's certainly not time to annoint "The Messiah" yet, there is still an election in this country.  That is if there aren't any lawsuits about all of the voter registration fraud going on nationwide by ACORN, Obama's orginazation.
I personally can't stand nor do I attribute any intelligence to anyone, Jweish or not, that uses the term "you people". People that use that term are arrogant, unintellignet nonentities that desrve whatever destruction they bring upon themselves.
Well not harm meant to Israel, but if they think that they are more important than our country they are wrong. People keep talking about the Hispanic vote or the Jewish vote. There is only an American vote. If people have an issue with that, they should leave our country. We have enough issues to deal with. We must stop being the babysitter of the world and deal with issues that matter to every day Americans. Israel is not one of them.
Israel has reason to be concerned about our leadership,  she is a GOOD country surrounded by Arab nations which would probably "stick together" if one of them attacked her, most likely would be Iran.  Iran has shown great demonic attitude toward Israel.  Israel is smart enough to know the danger.  We are her strongest ally and should always remain so.   This too goes back to the Bible and word of God.  Israel is back in her homeland like the Bible said it would be,  and further more, she will stay there regardless of what the rag-heads think about it.  And the Christians will ALWAYS back Israel....ALWAYS.  We believe in the REAL God whose word has NEVER failed.  Even though there are always wars, Israel will out last the wars.  People who are spiritually ignorant cannot understand this but it is the most realistic facts on Earth.
Israel need not worry about U.S. politics. I can promise u this Americans are tired of the crap from all sides. Here in lies the problem America isn't Israel,  who cares what teh Iraelies think. Check out the economy and unemployment rate in the U.S.  Most of the American public could care less.  Just another thorn in the side of American TAXPAYERS!  We are TIRED!
I am tired of our brave men and women in the United States constantly giving their lives for wars that Israel started.  So you consider that land as Zion, fine, who cares.  However, stop relying on us for support, it does not mean jack to most of us.  While our brave men and women come home from war, many poor and some homeless, wealthy Jews can be seen on MTV's Super Sweet Sixteen having $100,000 dollar birthday parties.  Fight your own damn war, we are tired of it.  Obama is not anti israel, but if he were, it would only strengthen my vote for him.
I think it's time the US stop governing the world. If its not already obvious, between our economy, our failing public education system, healthcare, and everything else, we need to focus on US. Sorry, Israel, time to stand on your own two feet and take care of yourselves. Personally, I do believe we have a great candidate to elect, but that is beside the point. As an American citizen, yes, I wish we could save everyone in the world, but this is ridiculous the way we let everything fall to pieces in our country while going around the world and trying to police all peace agreements and invading any country with oil. We have our own "wars" to conquer here at home.
Israel was established as a country by the winners of WWII. Allah decided who won that war, and Allah has allowed Israel to exist.

Were the gains of the 1967 six day war be returned to the countries it was taken from, none of it would go to Palestinians.

Do you hear those "contributing "countries wanting that land back? For them, isn't Israel the solution for their own Palestinian problems?

Israel is not a Facist state. Israel has the right to defend itself against the murderous ideology of the Palestinians, which is unrelenting.

The Palestinians are their own worst enemies.

We have to change that, and somehow become more of an enemy to the Palestinians than they are to themselves.

I don't see how that can be accomplished. Open war has been outlawed on Earth, in favor of "police actions" which are incapable of providing meaningful damage to the enemy.

We won WWII by carpet bombing them back into the stone age. We did that because nothing else would work.

A large smoking crater where Mecca used to be, would end Islam everywhere.

We should not have such options be "off the table".

If Islam wants a fight, they should get one. If the Palestinians want to die in Jihad against Israel, they should be accomodated.
If the United States stops supporting Israel, then the United States will be in real trouble. The Bible clearly says that God will bless the nations that bless Israel and curse the nations that curse Israel. I you think think things are bad now, if the U.S. stops supporting Israel, our country will experience unprecedented destruction.
What none of you seem to understand is that this for Israel and the Arab nations is a war of RELIGION and HOLY land. Read your Bibles, Torah, Quran....the lands being fought over were given to the Israelites by GOD, not man. The Arab nations seek to seize that land because they feel THEIR God has given it to them. This is not about politics, well for the US it always is, but not for them. Again, read the Word of God to understand that there will NEVER be peace in the Middle East until God says so. McCain, Obama..NO ONE can achieve this goal.
a vote for obama is a vote against the future of the US and our history of independence and strength
Th beginning of end of deception has already begun for Israel. Israel is coming to terms with reality that Obama will in fact come to power.
The Palestinians and Israelies will never come to peace because their core values and beliefs are to different. One will just bully and annihilate the other and in the process blow the earth to pieces with nuclar weapons. If you think this will not affect America you are deadly wrong. We have always been a country that cares about the freedom and quality of life for all men and women in all parts of the world. If we draw into ourselves caring not for the countries and their people who have supported and helped America since it's foundation we will be the sorriest, sickest people in this miserable world. I am a true blue full blooded American and have full confidence in our constitution and it's principles of freedon for all men and wish to continue helping countries who cannot defend themselves against tyrany. This world is in great turmoil right now and it will not be our economy that will kill America but rather our negelect of foreign affairs saftety.
Vote for McCain !

Continued support of the state of Israel continues to deplete the U.S. and puts us in danger of further strikes by Al Qaeda. Our support is a combination of pro Zionists and evangelists who quote their odd interpretations of scripture to support an artificial entity bent on advancing the Chosen People while allowing 3 million Palestinians to wallow in misery and subjegation. Israel needs to stand or fall on its own. We need to concentrate on our own needs and advancing our own people.
