Egyptians looking for 'good side' of America

CAIRO – After eight years of watching the Middle East peace process disintegrate into violence, five years of what most here regard as an illegal U.S. occupation of Iraq, the ensuing Sunni-Shiite conflict, and the subsequent rise of Iran as a nuclear threat in the mainly Sunni Gulf, most Egyptians agree that President Bush's legacy in the region has been one of instability.

Many Egyptians believe Sen. John McCain will likely hew to Bush's foreign policy and that Sen. Barack Obama will be more likely to solve, or at least attempt to solve, those pressing issues that are nearest and dearest to people's hearts here: the Palestinian/Israeli conflict and the war in Iraq.

"If McCain wins, the general perception seems to be that we're screwed," Sara Inani, a university drama professor, said during a recent interview in Cairo.

Although she prefers Ralph Nader, she believes most Egyptians feel that "if a Democrat wins, we have a fighting chance." And the most important issue for Inani? "War in Iraq, slam dunk. Most people would like to see the U.S. pull out."

Hoping negativity towards U.S. will ‘go away’
There is a sense among many Egyptians that Obama could restore the rush of warm feelings most Arabs held for the United States during the Clinton administration and erase the bad feelings generated by the Iraq war and the perceived pro-Israeli bias of the Bush administration.

"Peace in the Middle East will be good for all of us," in Iraq, Egypt and everywhere, said travel agency manager, Abdul Khaleq Fathi. He said he was impressed by an Obama speech on the Middle East and its future.

"I prefer Obama…Maybe because he has roots from Africa," added a colleague of Fathi’s, expressing a sentiment shared by many Egyptians that the Democratic candidate may be more empathetic toward Arabs because of his African and Muslim ancestry.

Yahya Khalil, a famous Egyptian jazz musician, was emphatic in his support for Obama."McCain will be the same line as where we are today and I'm not very happy with where we are today. I would like to see change and we hope the change will be for the better."

Khalil also expressed a hope shared by many Egyptians that affection for the U.S. will be rekindled if Obama is elected.

"America is a place that I love," says Khalil who holds dual U.S.-Egyptian citizenship. "I want the whole world to see the good side of America. And the bad side – created by politics that create this negativity between Americans and other parts of the world – should really go away."

Cecil P., I could not agree more with your response.  For years the U.S. has given and in return, bad-mouthed.  We definitely need to repair our foundation.  That last thing we need is a weak link like Obama in the White House.  He will be the first one to open the doors and let the terrorists in.
It is so refreshing to hear about other people from many parts of the world sharing the same hope & aspirations as the majority of Americans; Our country needs a fresh wind of change, a resolve to be fair & impartial in the Israeli-Palestinian problem. This can only occur in an Obama administration. America & the world cannot wait any longer for change- a fresh wind of change is about to come on Nov 2004-
i AGREE THAT OBAMA IS THE PERSON WE NEED TO LEAD US OUT OF THIS MESS AND RESTORE THE RELATIONS WE NEED TO HAVE WITH FOREIGN COUNTRYS BECAUSE HE CARES ABOUT HUMANITY, UNLIKE MCCAIN WHO IS A CLONE OF BUSH AND WELL SARA PALIN NEEDS TO STAY IN  ALASKA AND REMAIN A HOCKEY MOM
Actually Mr. Kenneth Cooper, Al-Qaeda began and was nurtured under George Bush Sr,'s watch Mr. Know it all.
"I prefer Obama…Maybe because he has roots from Africa," added a colleague of Fathi’s, expressing a sentiment shared by many Egyptians that the Democratic candidate may be more empathetic toward Arabs because of his African and Muslim ancestry.

Isn't this a problem for America? Are we all blind?

Wake-up America, it's not time to sell out your country for world opinion.
The "World's opinion" of the U.S. is IMPORTANT.
"UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL"
Saddam went down because he had NO friends in the world to come to his rescue when the Bush/Cheney/neocons invaded his country.
I believe Obama is our last chance to show the world
that the U.S. is not synonymous with the
Bush/Cheney/neocon doctrine.
God help us if "bomb, bomb, bomb Iran" McCain gets
elected.
I thought it was funny how the university professor from Cairo was a 'Drama Professor'.. Did they talk with a professor whose studies might have anything to do with the global economy or relations?? Just Drama, Nice NBC... good job..
Ron Paul was my first choice by far.  He predicted all of these economic events more than 5 years ago.  Bernanke and Paulson just said a couple of months ago that the economy was good and sound.  I also agree with Paul that our arrogance on the world stage has done us a great disservice.  Obama is closer to Paul on foreign policy than McCain.  McCain's song about bombing Iran should recieve unending ridicule.  McCain mentioning 10,000 year occupation of Iraq, while maybe not completely serious, was just stupid.
One of the Egyptians interviewed for this biased artical said he prefered Obama because of his African/Muslim ancestry. Wow, that's great, let us elect a president that satisfies Egytpians and other Arabs. I personally would like to see Iran elect a president with American ancestry, but guess what, not going to happen. We (America) are working very hard at imploding, and one day we will. We are "trojan horsing" ourselves to a slow death.
Democrats...the other mental disorder!!
ah yes, if it's not Republican, it is automatically LIBERAL. The most phobic, nasty grp of 'oh I am a AMERICAN CHristian,so my way is the only way. How very unlike what the men who wrote the Declaration were thinking. Tolerance. Thank you for telling us what other countries are thinking..whether we like it or not.
It seems pretty clear that the rest of the world, much like the vast majority of Americans want real change. Change that is simply not represented by the McCain/Palin ticket. We don't need another "joe six pack" running our country (haven't we suffered enough the last 8 years?); we need an educated, pragmatic thinker who we can take seriously. Style counts for nothing...it's all about substance in 2008. The stakes are too high this go around. Obama/Biden '08!
Bobby Jones from Auburn Alabama asked....
"Is the liberal media going to stop trashing the USA once Obama is elected?"

The bigger question is whether the "follow Dubya over the cliff crowd" will resume thinking for themselves without all of the republican hogwash being bantered about.
Yeah lets elect a president based on other countrys (esp middle east) opinions. Unreal, seems to me the Media agrees. Bush isnt the root of all this countries problems people, and if you can breathe and get off the mob mentality you can look at these two cantidates for who and what they are, not what the Soundbytes rally you to do.
Egyptians are tired of their dictator (Hosni Mubarrak) who has been propped up by successive American administrations (Isn't more than 20 yrs enough?). Democracy will be sacrificed as long as Mubarrak does not challenge US policies. We need to be consistent in letting others practice the same principles of democracy, fairness & justice which we TRY to implement in our country.
Another glaring example of our double standards is our support for Pakistan's Musharraf, who put up a fascade of democracy, never kept his word, was hated by his public (last few years), but we were willing to ignore all these as long as he was willing to hand over Al-Qaeda to the US, w/o giving them a chance to defend themselves or providing them due process (they were kidnapped & simple dis-appeared). As we all know, more than 95% in Gitmo were innocents.
The Democrats might be somewhat better for Democracies overseas.
How many of you ever ever been to Egypt? Ever been to the Middle East? Ever been to Africa or Asia? You sit here in America and pretend that you are on an island and that no one else matters. As an American that has worked internationally for the last 20+ years, I have seen our reputation disintegrate very quickly over the last 8 years even with our staunchest allies. The fact is, now, more than ever, it is a one world economy and that means that we need to at least understand, if not sympathize with all countries in the world, especially those that have been allies, and places where we have business relationships that last more than 4 or 8 years. We need to learn that it takes 10 times as long to correct an international situation than it does to screw it up in the first place. So that means it will take 80 years to fix the last 8 years....
I'm an American expat and have been living in Europe for almost 3 years. I'm a Republican who will vote for McCain and I'm 1000% against Obama. I know I'm not being biased when I point out that it's plainly obvious to me that the majority of people here want to see Obama as the next U.S. president. They fear McCain will continue the foreign policies of the Bush administration.

Americans can say, "Who gives a rat's a__ what foreigners think?", and I'd agree with them and take it a step further saying, "Who gives a rat's a__ what anyone thinks?" Why would you let anyone else influence how you'd vote? Vote for who you want. That's the point of our freedom to vote.

The thing that bothers me though is how pissy Americans are when it comes to presidential politics. Quit insulting each other and quit insulting foreigners and their countries. It's reflects so poorly on us. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Just because the majority of the world wants Obama doesn't mean you have to hate them for it, and hate the media for reporting it. Next time Republicans, nominate a decent candidate. Obama sucks rocks. What does that say about how the world (and more than half of America) views McCain?
If McCain wins, not only Arabs will stay in poverty and despair, we Americans will find our place on the "bread" lines. Food pantry demand has tripled in the past three years, add to that the mess in our healthcare system and lack of support for working families for education and childcare----and we will be screwed. Maybe McCain can put some of us up in some of the houses he forgot he owns.....
MSNBC, Chris Mathews, KO, Andrea Mitchell are responsible for where obama is today. I will never watch MSNBC again. you guys are a bunch of cheer leaders for BO. McCain will win anyway.
Of COURSE MSNBC is tilted towards Obama.  Fox is tilted toward McBush.  Take your pick.
Americans looking for "good side" of Egypt.
Irony is when so called democracies try and bash us.
Since America is damned if she does and damned if she doesn't perhaps we she save all of that foriegn aid we send out. Since every one else has it "figured out".
Well the bias is heavy in this blog. All the talk about the mid east's opinion on OUR election is of no importance. Especially Egypts, in this country they have laws similar to those of the jim crowe era, except towards Christians. Thats right, they have restrictions on where they can go, what jobs they hold, have the persons religion on their I.D.s and pay "fees" to remain Christian. Thats almost a reaccuring theme here in the mid east with just a few variations. When it comes to the opinions of other nations, more so the mid east, i say "Who gives a ....". This is OUR election and OUR time to choose for OURSELVES. As for the candidates running for office I, personally, have more faith in the Arizona governor, and Im a democrat.
Wow I cant tell you how many good fuzzy feelings I get when I hear that "sentiment shared by many Egyptians that the Democratic candidate may be more empathetic toward Arabs because of his African and Muslim ancestry." Well if thats not a good resin to vote for him I dont know what is. Really if they think he would make such a great leader he can go run over there. I am pretty shore they only want him elected when he is running for our pressident.

One last thing to all those blogers who are asking american to stay out of other peoples lives in other parts of the world mostly the middle east. We were minding our own when they flew charted plains into our buildings. We would let them alone if they would leve there hat mongering for people who dont share there faith in there own country and not bring it over hear.
I have a quick question, why does MSNBC.COM allow these ridiculous blogs to be posted on its website?  It's always interesting to read about the perspectives from the Middle East (outside of Israel) but I believe the author is missing a fundamental point in her blog.  Why is it that Middle Easatern Arabs are so eager to blame the United States, and with it Israel, for all of its problems in the regions?  Perhaps its time for those people in Egypt to demand more democratic and capitalistic freedoms to better their lives. It's so easy to blame the United States for your problems, but until the past few months the world economy grew at an unprecedented pace, so why is it that ordinary Egyptians didn't benefit?  The most obvious answer is that they would rather complain about Israel and the United States instead of taking a hard look at their own government and its own domestic policies.  Americans shouldn't worry as much about how Arab countries will view us because no matter what we do with our policies, ordinary Arabs aren't going to become pro-U.S.  It's more important for us as a country to worry about how NATO, Japan, and Israel view us because these are the countries who have always supported us in the good and the bad times.
Gee whiz, I wonder how much the average Egyptian cares about who I think should be the next President of Egypt. Heck, while we're at it, I wonder how much the current President of Eqypt cares about what EGYPTIANS think about who should be their President. Not much I'd guess, since it really doesn't matter. it won't be until he dies (that's how things work over there) and is likely to be his son. Why on earth would we care what they think ?
Most of the world will be paying for Bush's incompetence for years to come.  Bush will easily be judged the worst President ever.
I have to agree with some of the other posters. This is OUR election. Foreign opinions are best kept to themselves to keep Americans from responding emotionally rather than voting based on logic. America is the greatest nation on the face of the Earth. That's why we have an immigration problem. It is also why so many other nation's hate us; pure envy. I've lived in the Middle East for eight years. The best doctors and teachers all want to move to the US. The rest either don't care or are envious.
Great article: a much-needed reminder that there is a world of people out there just like us, who mostly like us as long as we treat them as we want to be treated.
On the other hand, it is frightening to see the many bitter responses from fearful, ignorant folks who don't realize they, too, have foreign counterparts: political extremists and religious fundamentalists who fear and hate everyone they fail to understand.
God bless the WORLD, including America!
Obama for President!
I'm just going to call it like I see it-If Obama was white this would not be an issue..Who in their right mind would want to go thru 8 more yrs of Bush's politics. The average american does not make 250k or more a yr so why is it even a question..Obama wants to help the average man...He makes over 250k a yr so he is going to be subjected to those tax increases as well..I have never seen so many stubborn old old fashioned ppl in my life..It is not rocket science.. Sometimes I wish everyone was born with common sense..Anytime you have someone who doesnt even live in America and tehy are goin hard and praying fro a change..you know its official..Palin is a red neck and she knows nothing..if obama would've gone up there talking in incorrect English the media would've been all over that..I am a woman but i dont respect Sarah Palin bc she I can see teh deceitfullness in John Mccain and he does not have young african american women and men at heart and I ned someone who has everyone's best interest at heart.
Its a world economy today, but still highly dependant on the US. Being #1 (economically) is not a given for the US anymore, but as long as the US is at or near the top we will be disliked, feared, envied hated. Its have/have-not's , old world/new world. It isnt the fault of one President. Obama isnt going to stop the econominc growth of Russia, China, India etc. These countries used to be backwaters not so long ago. We should be flexible in realizing another countries importance , without question (and we do with all the aid we give out) But that same flexibilty of thought would logically dictate that this is not one Presidents mess, and anything else is weak minded Mob mentallity.
Who cares if the world loves us or not?  We as the American people must do what we believe is the right thing to do.  Our government needs to 1. protect the American people 2. protect and live by the US Constitution and Bill of Rights 3. Enforce existing laws and 4. set up the right economic conditions so that the American people can earn an honest living and enjoy the benefits of American citizenship. We will know we are doing the right things as long as people keep applying to live here and become citizens.
It will not be working if and when people start moving out of this country to other countries.
Obama is of African, Muslim(and Christian) background.
It is no wonder people from Africa and Muslim countries want to see him elected. But he is running for President of the USA, not President of the African/Muslim world, so why should their opinion be meaningful?  The liberal media including MSNBC could not be any more prejudicial than they already are in favor of this man Obama.  He has less experience as a CEO than does Sarah Palin, but they keep worshipping at his altar and discrediting her.

Just when I was about to give up on America for yet another day, somebody says something human and rational. Of course he doesn't live in America: thanks to JE in Belgium from a fellow expat American. Although I'm for Obama.
This is getting rediculous.  The reason every country has a bad impression of the US is because our media & one of our presidential canididates hates the same country that gives the the freedom they enjoy.  Should we apologize for all the money we send when ever there is a natural disaster?  We the (US) are the most giving and caring people in the world.  We don't need to apologize for that.  The media would have us believe that we have to give to the countries when there is a natural disaster because it is our fault for destroying the planet.  The Demon-crats bash our president, our country for everything.  They need to look in the mirror.  The congress has a lower rating than the President they so like to bash.  Let assume, inccorrectly, that McCain is just like Bush.  I would rather have more of the same than "change" like our current congress.  And since McCain is nothing like Bush and Palin is more experienced than Obama, and since neither hate my country.  In fact I believe they love it, as I do, it makes a very easy decision.
This is NOT news. Just more pro-Obama slant from anywhere a reporter gets a quote. I have been to Cairo, Egypt, and they are in no position to be giving political opinion to the citizens of the USA. Their roads are in shambles and it takes 2 hours to get from the airport to Giza with noone obeying traffic lights. What a mess! Without aid from the US they would dry up and be covered by the Saraha. Women are treated very badly and without many rights in their Muslim system and this was spoken from a Muslim woman who was my contact.BTW, did you know that a Muslim man can have up to 4 wives, if he can afford them? So don't fall into this BAD Bush - GOOD Obama reference. We have given the Egyptians billions wiyhout ANY visible improvement.
I guess the over $30 Billion the US has provided since 1979, much of which was supposed to go to humanitarian aid, is not considered to be our "good" side and is certainly not appreciated enough. Egypt is a repressive, totalitarian regime, trying hard to stem the tide of Islamic fascism from the Muslim Brotherhood and other radical groups- the same who assassinated Sadat.  To think that the every day lives of the 70 million Egytians will be better due to America's adventures in Iraq, or that the Palestinian Arab-Israeli conflict will have any true effect on their daily lives and plight is fantasy that is constantly peddled to deflect attention away from their own problems.  The US certainly does not seem to be getting its moneys worth from all the aid we shower Egypt- certainly not in the UN, or on the porous border with Gaza, allowing tons of weaponry to be smuggled into and under the border there.  So if Obama is elected, there will be sudden peace and prosperity and condemnation and renounciation of terrorism in Egype?  Allah help us.
Lee B
Feldman and Greg seem to forget even the most recent Egyptian history.  In 1979, Anwar Sadat, then the president of Egypt (one of the leading voices of the Arab nations), took an unprecedented, progressive step forward by calling for a peace treaty with Israel.  He wasn't some dove-ish intellectual elite, like some would like to paint any person who takes such a course of action; he was a respected military leader, a tough negotiator, and a reformer of sorts.  He re-instituted multi-party elections, and became the first Arab leader to set foot in Israel, going so far as to speak in front of their parliament and demand peace and tolerance on BOTH sides of the border.

And then someone killed him for it.  His legacy has gone down the tubes in the past 27 years (to the day), but it seems like MSNBC found a few voices still singing his song.  In these troubled times in the Middle East, some rational Egyptian ideas might be just what we all need.
I say who ever gets in reinstates the Monroe Doctrine.
I have to agree that our current president has been and still is a disappointment.  On the other hand Senator John McCain is not George Bush.  With regard to Senator Obama, I do not see or understand why anyone would believe he could help the situation in Egypt or that region of the world. And how lame is it to believe that he would be more empathetic toward Arabs because of his African and Muslim ancestry.
Truth is This the world would rather have Obama than McCain. There is no biased is based on facts which one would try to make the world more peaceful, through multilateral talks, even unilateral talks. In todays world you cannot come to the table with preconditions. How hard is it to just talk you dont have to solve everything overnight. But even talking would be a positive step Obama will do this McCain not so much or in alot of cases not at all.
Yes, Ms Charlene Gubash, lets all vote so that foreigners will be happy.  It is all our fault, anyway, isn't it?

Really, it wont make any difference who gets elected.
The Arab / Muslim world will continue to blame us for all their problems.   They will also do nothing to make peace with Israel -- except to demand that Jews die or move elsewhere (anything else is known as "pro-Israel" bias).

Look at Islamic societies and ask why they have so many problems.  Ask about the hate, violence and discrimination against non-Muslims.

J. Arthur

These are our allies, folks.  What if these were European statements?  Would that make a difference to you McCain supporters?  If so, perhaps you need to rethink your position based on something besides basic racism.  Do you truly not understand America's place on the world stage?

No more failed policies.  The damage done in the past two weeks alone has been tremendous and will effect us for generations to come - IF we survive the fallout.  Enough.  Enough.  McCain can't claim that the economy is strong on the same day that it falls through the roof.  We need real leadership for our country and as a representative of us throughout the world.

McCain is a war mongerer who will create more wars.  Did you not listen to his first debate?  No spending except for wars.  Consider yourself warned.  For all of those who voted for Bush and will vote for McCain -prepare to send your children and grandchildren to fight in wars over oil.  It's all about oil.  If you think anyone else, you're sadly mistaken.  We need to break free from our dependence - its our only chance.
The Egyptians want Obama?
I vote for McCain

Obama gets secret foreign Contributions?
I vote for McCain.

Obama bad mouths the USA while in Germany?
I vote for McCain.

Every fact makes it more and more clear.  Obama is not for us.

McCain/Palin 2008
I'm so tired of always hearing about this is "OUR" election and do not want any other opinions.  Yet when we invade a country, the first thing we ask if for assistance from OTHER COUNTRIES.  You repul-sican hypocrits need to think and stop judging so quickly.  Have you ever thought that there was an option to choose Mccain in this article and NOBODY wanted him?  Pull the blinds from over your eyes and realize unless we shapen up we are not going to have any friends at all, and then we will really be in trouble.
A vote for Obama from the Middle East.  I guess they see Obama as someone who will be easier to get over on, and they believe he will take the pressure off.  Give them more time to foster and grow more Terrorist organizations and expand the sway of radical Muslim beliefs.  MSNBC had proven it's bias towards Obama in the stories they cover and how to cover them.  However, in publishing this story I think they have mis-judged how people will translate this information.  Americans, think with your own mind for a change.  Ask yourself the real question of Why would these Middle Easterner's want Obama to win?  Think hard.  The answer is not because they simply Like Obama more than McCain.  There is far more involved to their reasoning than that.
I think it is important to know how other countries view the candidates.  Our standing in the world has taken a huge hit under Bush/Cheney, and there is plenty of reason to believe that it will sink further under McCain/Palin.
Please respect the views of others. It would be appreciated if this bulletin is not used for irrelevant propaganda. This is a privelege not a right, so please be respectful to each opinion. The incessant attacking of one another is fatuitous and the harsh rhetoric of some makes commenting rebarbative; it does not help anyone. Thank you.
As an employee of the Federal government for many years, I have worked closely with members of our military and have seen them come and go to deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  From my perspective, previous posts to this article that are based on the perception that the U.S. is hated around the world because of our involvement in the Middle East are not accurate.  I have listened to stories at my work about interactions my coworkers have had with the locals in that part of the world, and overwhelmingly, these interactions are very positive.  Many Middle Easterners express gratitude for the U.S. presence over there and the stability we have brought to regions that were cruelly oppressed before we arrived.  Many average Europeans also communicate positive feelings for the work the U.S. is doing.   I do not know if the American press simply travels in different circles than our uniformed citizens do, but they do not seem inclined to report on the positive experiences I hear most about.
People, please take what you read in the press with a level of skepticism, knowing that the media may not be presenting the whole story.  The U.S. is better thought of throughout the world than we are being led to believe.
Okay... and while we're at it, let's ask the Iranians, and Saudis, and al Quaeda members, too.  Surely they know what's better for our country than we do.
The Egyptians interviewed are not a statistically significant representation of the country as a whole. As a Coptic Christian American-Egyptian I find the generalization that Obama might be empathetic to Arabs because of his Muslim and African ancestry horrifying. A distinction between Egyptians who believe themselves to be Arabs and those who don't should be emphazised. Also,I think Muslim Egyptians are just afraid that the US will have a President that doesn't support the Egyptian Government's reign of terror against Egypt's Christian population.
