‘Neither candidate will be good for Pakistan’

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – For many Pakistanis, the battle for the White House raging in the U.S. is less about the differences between the two candidate’s qualifications to be president, and more about which of the two is more likely to stop sending missile-firing drone aircraft from across the border in Afghanistan into Pakistan’s tribal areas.

And in that regard, many Pakistanis are overwhelmingly in favor of Sen. Barack Obama.

Many believe that Obama will be a friend to Pakistan and change the Bush administration’s policy of "hot pursuit" of terrorists inside their borders.

VIDEO: Pakistanis differ over whether an Obama or McCain White House will be best

Even more surprisingly, more than a few of the Pakistanis we spoke with were convinced that Obama is Muslim because his middle name is "Hussein," and therefore believe he may be more sympathetic to Pakistan if he were president.

"Barack Obama is for Muslims," said Osman Ali, an 18-year-old high school student in Islamabad. "I am sure he will withdraw U.S. forces from our borders and that’s why I hope he will win."

Nazim Hussain, a medical student, echoed Ali. "Obama will not be like Bush," he said. "Bush had an aggressive policy towards Muslims and I’m sure that Obama will be different."

But if these Pakistanis had listened to the first presidential debate between the two candidates, they might have been surprised. Obama and Sen. John McCain were at odds over Pakistan – with McCain taking a softer stance.

Difference of approach
According to Obama, the U.S. has to deal with Pakistan in a tougher manner. Pakistan has received $10 billion in U.S. military aid and assistance and the Pakistanis have not done what needs to be done to get rid of the terrorist safe havens inside their borders.

"If the United States has al-Qaida, bin Laden, top-level lieutenants in our sights, and Pakistan is unable or unwilling to act, then we should take them out," Obama said during the first presidential debate on Sept. 26 when a question by moderator Jim Lehrer about Afghanistan lead to the issue of Pakistan.

McCain said such threats were unhelpful. "We've got to get the support of the people of – of Pakistan," he said. He countered by stressing the need to work with the Pakistani people to help them get the border area under control.

"We're going to have to help the Pakistanis go into these areas and obtain the allegiance of the people. And it's going to be tough," he said.

In spite of McCain’s call for a new strategy in dealing with Pakistan, Salima Agha, a savvy businesswoman in Islamabad, had no time for a McCain presidency.

"I’m for Obama," she said. "He’s young, he’s energetic and he represents change." She added, "He’s the JFK of the 21st century."

‘The U.S. policy will always be against us’
But Kulsoom Mirza, a mother of four who lives in an upscale Islamabad neighborhood, thought both candidates were highlighting strikes inside Pakistan as a way to win votes.

"Neither candidate will be good for Pakistan," she said. "God forbid that the U.S. will do to us what they have done to Afghanistan and Iraq. But it seems to me and to my family that the U.S. is intent upon destroying Pakistan as well," she said.

Mirza’s views seemed to have widespread support among Pakistanis from all walks of life.

Raja Khalid, a marketing manager in Rawalpindi, agreed when asked about his views on the U.S. presidential candidates.

"It is up to the American people to decide who will be their president, Pakistan has nothing to do with it," said Khalid. "But one thing I know for sure, the U.S. policy will always be against us –that will never change." He added, "We need to distance ourselves from America."

Others echoed Khalid’s sentiments and seem to see the U.S. as more of a menacing threat than an ally.

"The Americans are enemies of Muslims," said Muhammed Shabbir, who works in a laundry shop in Rawalpindi. "They do not wish us well; the Americans want to destroy us," he said.

Shabbir, who spoke in Urdu, the native language of Pakistan, grew impatient from the question as much as from the heat inside the small shop as he labored over a hot iron.

"Look," he told us, "The U.S. is responsible for all the terrorism taking place inside Pakistan today," he said, his voice becoming agitated. "The U.S. is the mastermind of all our problems because it wants to destroy Pakistan," he said.

Not mincing words, Agha, the business woman in Islamabad, said, "The U.S policy is just all wrong. The Bush administration’s policy is just all wrong."

"How could the U.S. expect to invade and occupy two Muslim countries and not expect repercussions," she said. "And now they see what they have sowed."

'Al Qaida' and Iraq are two seperate issues. There was no Al Qaida in Iraq, the U.S. attacked Iraq because they had 'proof' that Iraq had WMD's, which to date have not been found, so to deflect criticism they started associating Al Qaida with Iraq.

Secondly, those of you saying that pakistan has  a desire to appease those who kill innocents, get your facts right. If it wasn't for pakistans help you guys would have had a lot more casualities in your 'war on terror' then you've already had.
The reason Pakistan has not been able to quell the extremists is because the people in the tribal areas are being coddled by them with money and schools to ally them, paid for by proceeds of the poppy trade.  The only way to break the insurgency is for Pakistan to outdo them by bringing better infrastructure and benefits to the tribal areas, or to wipe out their source of revenue and supply.  The more fighting we try, whether it be our army or Pakistan's army, the more allies and fighters the Taliban and Al-Quada will have from the millions in the tribal populations.  No army would be large enough.
What don't you get about Al Qaida?  Of course they were in Iraq.  They were in Cleveland, fer cryin out loud!  They were, and still are, all around the world.  They are an international terrorist organization.  Which one of those words don't you understand?
Karen-I think the Collateral damage number was a bit inflated, the "Green Zone" stopped issuing the number about 13 months into the invasion/occupation, after it eclipsed 160 thosand, not good for public opinion, you know?. I worked in the Green Zone and the collateral damage reported was unbelievable (think of all that went unreported).

Yes, I agree,as much as I hate too- we have worn out our welcome- the Iraqi Govt. want us out- we have done enough evil and I concur we are paying for all this evil, with the slow and steady demise of our beloved USA.
I AGREED, WE THE (USA) NEED TO STOP SENDING, MONIES AND AID TO COUNTRIES, THAT HATE US AMERICANS. WE AMERICANS NEED OUR MONIES IN OUR ECONOMY. WE HAVE ISSUES HERE IN THE USA TO TAKE OF....(HEALTH INSURANCE, THE WALL STREET BAILOUT, ETC.)
Reading all the responses to this article, it is amazing how wrong and ignorant people are about Pakistan. Pakistani people have negative view about American government for a reason, and that is BETRAYAL time and time again.  There is no trust. All you hear is that pakistan is given billions of $$ by the US, but you don't understand that Pakistan doesn't need more weapons it need schools & infrastructure.  After the destruction of USSR (in which Pakistan helped US a lot)Pakistan was left all alone by the US government and people were very upset about that.  And history is repeating itself now, even though Pakistan has soldiers dying everyday because of this fight against terror, all we hear from US government is "Pakistan is not doing enough".  NOT ENOUGH... there are soldiers & people dying almost everyday what more can you ask for.
But American people have to understand both sides of the story and not only believe what they hear on CNN or FOX.  Understand the FACTS.. Pakistanis don't hate US, but they have no other choilce when they face the hard facts of life.
Let us not forget; In the old Iraq, the current Iran, Syria, North Korea, China, etc. this type of back and forth diagoluge is not permitted.
I am surprised that people in the military actually believe (and continue to believe) in fighting a war that is unnecessary and expensive (both in money and in lives).  Bush LIED to you all and people want out of it.
And other countries have valid opinions on our candidate because we don't see them like they do and we SHOULD embrace their concerns  They don't care who is liberal and who is conservative.  They worry what will happen to them when someone in America becomes president.  Look at some of your comments "If you harbor terrorists, look out, we're going to invade you."  What kind of uneducated, redneck statement is that?  Not only that, but you people seem to think Democracy is the greatest government in the world and NEEDS to be proliferated to everyone.  No matter who it hurts, no matter what culture we destroy in the process.
Also, McCain's stance on Diplomacy is a lie.  He is just saying that to oppose Obama's thoughts on the whole issue.  We all know he supports invasion into any country harboring terrorists.
We can't, as a nation, go around parading around with an Iron Fist.  We need to be cautious, diplomatic and honest.  And we are not the first country to step up and help the world.  That is the biggest ethnocentric lie.
Did any of you read the article?  OBAMA is more hawkish on Pakistan than McCain.  McCain wants a diplomatic resolution in Pakistan - Obama wants to fire missles.  I think I'm changing my vote to Obama.
Aa a person who travels a great deal (especially to Europe), I will tell you we cannot be isolated ignoramus any longer, China, the Middle East, EU and India had left us in their economic dust-and soon a oil rich Russian Bear will joinn them- wake up- we are not better than other people- 2009 will be very hard for the USA- I will be sitting on The Italian Riveria watching it all-our only hope is Barrack
The government of the U.S.A. has built up the enemies we're fighting now. It built up Saddam to take on Iran, it built up the Taliban to take on the Soviets.
In the past the goverment has created puppet governments in other countries such as Vietnam. Almost every action our government has taken, has come back to cost us dearly. By supporting Isreal, we have created an enemy not only in the Palastinians who were displaced, but in Muslims throughout the world. Why did 9/11 happen? To cut the head off the snake the Palastinians we're fighting. The fight over Isreal has become a world wide war. Muslims are calling on a Jihad to get the westerners out of their lands. I would expect someone in Kansas would fight to the death for generations to get their land back. If the US wants to end this, they need to end their support for Isreal, and let it stand on it's own.
Sean Scott
America attacked Iraq and afghanistan to set up its bases in middle east so it could take control of oil and also to keep an eye on India, Pakistan, China, Iran, Korea and Russia. That is there only motive.
I dont see how ignoring Iran will result in anything positive only will add fuel to a burning flame.  These are some serious times in the world and now is the time for good people to unite. Were all Gods children weather we (muslim, christain etc.) we all Gods children "one road one trod one destiny" Im from the Bahamas and I love all of you weather you muslim, afghan, pakistan, black, white alien or human.
Sean Scott - That's funny on using Kansas as an analogy, since the Native American (Indian)once owned it - yet they aren't fighting for it. I don't want to get into a huge anthropological or historical discussion, but the Jews conquered it in 500 BC (the earliest as far as substantiated records) and 6000 BC. as far as preserved oratory.

All the countries you mentioned ASKED the U.S. for their help. Were we naive in thinking they could involve themselves in the Judeo-Christian civilization and democracy that we live? Possibly. But Israel is there, and though this is politically incorrect, they have displaced and sit in the middle of an archaic thinking, misogynistic, (really)godless, and uncivilized bit of realestate.
The US government is bullying all the other countries. Why should other countries give up there nuclear weapons and the US keep theres. How about the US give up there's first and then tell everyone else.
I agree with Obama we need to go after the terrorists in Pakistan. He isn't a coward like Bush and will actually use the military to go into Pakistan and kill some real terrorists.

OBAMA 08!
To kill an octopuss you got to shoot at the eye. Just like Nigeria is the epicenter /the nerve center, of all corruption in Africa, similarly Pakistan is the nerve center of all evil in the muslim world. Wake up everybody!
why are they saying that we hate muslims? there is alot of muslims living here in america and serving the military. makes no sense
To be really honest, I believe that these policies are not lead by any president of US rather intelligence agencies do. US is attacking turn by turn each Muslim country whatever may be the reason.
Now all fellows in America, can you please just answer me that where are the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq? Did your army found that? Oops i think that was only the reason to attach Iraq. Oil matters really, isn't it? I guess you people are literate enough than Pakistanis to understand all whats going on. And finally many Pakistanis hate America because their relatives are also dying in these attacks despite being innocents :(
The Pakistani government turns a blind eye to what's going on in its own country. They pretend they are trying to help us. We should suspend any aid to Pakistan until there is real measurable progress and not empty promises. After all the terrorists they are harboring don't want to destroy Pakistan.

Obama seems like a nice guy and has good intentions  but he is way to inexperienced having spent a mere 143 days in the senate.

He is a freshman senator with 143 days on the job and he launches a presidential campaign. Would anyone let a surgeon with that much experience operate on them?

Does anyone actually believe that he has the experience and qualifications to be Commander in Chief?

McCain has the experience and the credentials and unlike Obama he has actually written and passed legislation. All Obama will do is raise taxes and create more give-away programs.

I agree with Phil, you judge a man with whom he associates himself with. David Ayers terrorist. It scares the hell out of me to think that Obama will be our next president. God willing he will not!
Greg,NY NY I am surprised you would think that someone for NY of all people would understand the fight against terrorist. After all it was the people of NY that lived it while the rest of the world watched it from the sidelines
For years, the various militant groups that have governed and still govern Pakistan have proven to be corruptive, creating war, unrest, and continuous upheavel amongst the people who live there.

Pakistanis are also not educated, making communication all the more difficult.  Their militant groups are bullying and shoving them around in all directions which results in a lot of suffering.

Barack Obama is for them as long as Pakistan works along with the U.S. to get terrorists out of their country; otherwise,(as a last resort), force will be used to get these terrorists out.

The U.S. also agrees to assist them in rebuilding their country and to help set up educational systems.  This is what Barack Obama has been saying from the start and McClame is twisting words in the process; Pakistanis are hearing contradictions as to who is for or against them.

They need Barack Obama to clarify the issues for them, because he knows their problem and he knows how to approach them through proper and skillful communication and whether some believe he is Muslim or not is irrelevant.  All they want is their right to peaceful living.
"Bottom line, this story is useless.  Who cares what citizens of another country think about our presidential race.  They are not the ones voting."

That's not correct the USA are one of the world leading countries and so, for every country in the World this race is important. The election will mark a big step in world politics!!
This goes to JJ of pakistan. When Pak was created by splitting from India, over 20% were Hindus, where have they all gone?
To all of you that think that we have created a recent world view of hatred,I can tell you from experience that these were the same feelings that I found when I visited Europe in the mid 60's.
WHY???? I don't know but I think it goes to their being tought from their youth that America is the great satan of the world.--We are a great nation and it has been built with a great number of people that were from different faiths and backgrounds.--We make mistakes but we learn from them and try not to repeat them, unlike so many countries that continue to live in the dark ages because the population is held in check by dictators or governments that do not want to advance but wish to keep things status-quo.
May GOD protect the world from those countries and individuals.
i sure hope this is read....i'm from alaska and there was a rally held in anchorage about Palin...it was recorded to be the biggest rally held in alaska...she doesnt speak for all women....it wasnt covered by  nation wide news when it should of been....everyone needs to see it
hatred brings back more hate.
i hope your resources dry up sooner,so you can't go around bullying and destroying other nations for your own selfish reasons or you wake up soon.

for all the money you have been crying about, went into those special miltary operations you asked for.remember when saudi arabia needed militry assistance against iraq, then they paid in billions of dollars and oil.you can't forget all that too soon.if only a quater of that money would have gone to poor, you might have atleast million friends in pakistan.people of america don't have a clue since they never saw the world outside their hole.
we dont need to wait for another terrorist attack on our land, the fanatics are just sitting pretty ,enjoying watching us destroy ourselves , we have our own lawless territories inthe NE with the worst destroyers and manipulators of lives .
they are the folks on wall street and the news media
You can't negotiate with people who want to kill you.  Think the Jews could have had a sit down with Hitler and negotiated their way out of the death camps?  If I remember correctly they tried, and the Nazi's used that to slowly bleed them financially and then finally throwing them in Death Camps.  I don't care about religious beliefs, whether someone is Muslim, Christian, or Agnostic, as long as they follow a common set of peacefull laws then they can all believe whatever they want.  Osama is a soldier and has been his entire life...he can't just retrain into a farmer.  Obama and McCain both suck and neither are going to SOLVE our problems.  BOTH of their plans for healthcare, Iraq, and Pakistan are so full of holes that neither have enough consistency to fix our problems quickly.  The next decade for the US is going to be a tough one.
iraq body count.org lists "At least 658 known child deaths are among the overall figures recorded by IBC in 2007, but this is certainly fewer than our figures must contain, as only 34.6% of victims’ ages were reported."  so multiply 658 by about three for clindren's death in Iraq due to the war, far less than the 600 thousand indicated above, though nonetheless a terrible tragedy.
It is quite surprising to note how ignorant the americans are about the ground realities in Pakistan. The fighters they created to destroy Soviet Union are now against them. USA has been supporting Taliban for years. Now they are supporting poppy growing warlords of Afghanistan. The so called advocates of democracy had been culitvating dictatorship in Pakistan for so many years & now have the cheek to say they favour stable democracy in our country.Pl. have some sanity while forming any opinion. It's very easy to bully while in power. But that's not fair with humanity. The americans must realise Russia is again gaining power. In near future they will not be the only super power.
When all is said and done and the election is but a dream, President Obama will do the right thing based on fact and careful decisions.  Anyone in their right mind who thinks we can solve all of the problems in the middle East is out of their gourd.  This area has based their lives on their religion for so long it's like trying to spit in the wind to solve them.  It's not our place to solve their problems, it is however our place to avenge repressive governments and seek some sort of retribution for 911.  That is not going to happen in Iraq. The way Pakistan choses to govern itself is their business, that they are an ally at this point is a good thing. I'm sure they have no more control over the Taliban than we do over the Mexican drug lords.  We need to make our peace with 911 and concentrate our efforts on our own country. To pidgeonhole all Pakistanis in a nice little box is unfair.  I'm sure their citizens have alot of the same concerns as Americans do; to have a job and provide for their family, get an education etc. I think Obama is the man for the job because he understands diplomacy as opposed to aggression. He is willing to hear both sides of the story and find some middle ground that everyone can live with. We need to make an orgaized retreat from Iraq and let them handle their own afffairs, find Bin Laden and wipe him out and get on with life.
Well I am in Pakistan and a Muslim, how i see things is that American forces should now use anohter propaganda to invade yet another country, we have seem much bloodshed in Iraq and Afghanistan. We can not expect the same in Pakistan.

What the American friends must understand is tht they can cut Pakistani Aid to put the nation at its worst, what americans dont understand the aftermath of cut in American supplies via Pakistan.

in short Live and let others live.
Why do some Americans not realize why all this is happening?
I do not understand how they cannot see that if they stop invading other countries for oil, and actually use their money to buy the oil instead, then Osama Bin Laden would never have happened!
HE ONLY ADMITTED TO THE ATTACKS AFTER THE U.S. GOVERNMENT ACCUSED HIM OF THEM! The U.S. needed someone to stick the blame on, so he might as well take responsibility.

And I pity some of the people that think Pakistan needs to be invaded. IT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA TO INVADE A COUNTRY WITH NUCLEAR WEAPONS!
An Obama win will be welcomed in Pakistan, even as it implodes due to warring factions and corruption.    Of course for America, it does signify that we have lost the war on terror and will surrender in Iraq and eventually in Afghanistan, inviting another 9/11.  Yet this time, I think it will be brought on by angry Muslims residing in London or Amsterdam, not Quetta, traveling on EU passports.
Somewhere perhaps, if you believe in God, the same God that the jews, muslims and christians believe in, who we believe preaches love and understandng, the same words that are taught by the hindu and the buddhist --  looking down at all these comments and all that's going on and crying his eyes out -- and all I do is sigh and hope that we will all some day see that this is all just the work of hatred and power, some say the work of the devil whose mission is to divide us, and maybe someday we will all see the light and live the way we were meant to live.  until then - the chaos will continue --
Phil - why would someone of indian descent not 'get' all the drama that is going on? I am a woman of east indian descent and have lived in New York my whole life -- the heart of everything that is going on with the economy -- the heart of the attack on 9/11 -- the heart of growing up with people black, white, puerto rican, asian, jewish, muslim, christian, buddhist - you name it --- my dad fought for the allies in WWII with the Indian army and was a POW held by the Japanese.  Yeah, I do think I get a few things. I was young when East pakistan and west pakistan fought and Bangladesh won its independence and was horrified by how people treat each other, including relatives of mine who were brutalized -- yeah I do think I get it.  I was an international relations major and have spent 25 years working in a variety of industries helping people work better together.  I have three kids who are great kids and work hard to raise them every day of my life -- especially during these times when we're seeing the worse economic crises since the depression.  My dad never was on any public assistance, despite being an immigrant raising 4 kids and, God willing, never will I -- so, please enlighten me and tell me exactly WHAT is it I wouldn't get???  Here's something you need to get -- there's more to this world than black and white - and being a black man, frankly - you should know better than to make racist comments about people of indian descent and "other nationalities' - have you ever even set foot out of the U.S. -- there are actually people out there who are educated and GET a whole lot more, and probably seen and lived through a whole lot more than you ever will -- including Obama - a man who will get my vote not cause he is a black man - but because I think he gets it too!
To Michael Fort Bragg.NC, I just have a question from the population that think that Obama is going to be “taking from the rich”….the “rich”used to be taxed. All of their taxation has been taken away. Bush and McCain then proceeded to reward them for shipping our middle class jobs overseas. How is this country supposed to run when you can’t pay taxes because you don’t have a job, nor can you get one because there are none? There is no one to tax at this point except the “rich business owners”, they are the only ones who have money at this point. They are only going to pay what they paid in taxes pre-Bush. They weren’t hurting then and I doubt it will change their lives for the worst now. They still have more than they or even their great grandchildren could even spend. How greedy can people be? Do you realize that Bush has accomplished what his grandfather set out to do? …Eliminate the middle class in America. Think about it. If we keep on this track we will be the next third world country. There are Americans just like you that are now living in tents and not because of a natural disaster!!!
Obama, who graduated top of his Harvard class by the way, knows this alone will not create jobs. He knows he will have to bring the jobs back to USA and will undoudtedly have to give some breaks for that. C’mon, he knows everything that’s entailed here.
FYI regarding Pakistan, the Taliban has infiltrated the largest city there. Therefore I would think you can expect that most of Pakistan has been infiltrated by this terrorist group. No politician is going to or can reveal everything to the general public. You have to find the real facts/truth out for yourself, they are out there. I believe many many Americans have enough common sense that they can find, and figure out, on their own what really needs to be done. Barak luckily has the life experience as well as the common sense and “book smarts” to lead us in the right direction, have no doubt about that.
My God, these comments are frightening.  What kind of country have we become?  It truly is safer to be America's enemy than her ally!!!   Do we need to antagonize them more?  What possible positive result will come of that?  Obama, McCain, whoever--they're all just flailing around trying to explain their utter failure in Afghanistan.  Never accept blame, but always point to the next guy: "Pakistan's not doing enough!"  So we'll go for some feel-good results.  Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, and all of our problems will go away, right?  Wrong; dead wrong, dear friends.

Let me remind you of a few things, though:

America only provided arms for the Afghan resistance to the USSR (but those Stingers were great!).  Pakistan effectively fought that war: trained the Afghan resistance, provided the logistics, and provided the intelligence.  IF IT WERE NOT FOR PAKISTAN, the Soviet Union would have steam-rolled through Afghanistan, overwhelmed Pakistan, then moved West through Iran.  They'd then have an Indian Ocean port at Karachi and domination of the world's oil resources in the Persian Gulf.  There would be NO WAY America could move ground forces to the region in time to stop this; the only option would be nuclear war.

But the Pakistani Premier, General Zia Ul-Haqq, proposed to Jimmy Carter that the United States (along with other European countries and China) arm the Afghans--to turn them into an effective resistance.  When the Afghans started having some success, Muslims from around the world flocked to the cause of fighting the Communists.  In every sense of the word, they were heroes; not "extremists."  They were men who saw injustice in the cruelest form, who knew the dangers of inaction, and who gave up everything while most of the world didn't even know where Afghanistan was on a map.

And now for all of you who condemn Pakistan: you should thank Pakistan that today, we can say, "The free world won the Cold War," and, "the Cold War never became a hot, nuclear war."

This article portrays Pakistanis as unintelligent, over-zealous, hill-billies.  There are some hillbillies in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), just like there are in the USA in Appalachia; but the vast majority of Pakistanis are educated, tolerant, moral people.  All they want is to LIVE IN PEACE; they hate the Neo-Taliban as much as we do.

It is absolutely true that America created Pakistan's current problems.  Pakistan was never fighting its own people before the US invasion of Afghanistan; but now they have diverted their army from defending the Line of Control to fighting their own citizens--turning thousands into refugees.  They have lost more of their own soldiers than any NATO country has fighting these madmen; yet the candidates want to take Pakistani sacrifices for granted.  Pakistan is being ripped apart by this strife, but all our candidates have to say is, "Pakistan has its own problems, but they need to do more to fight terror."

If any more pressure is put on Pakistan, the country will erupt in flames.  Pakistan has every right to fire on American soldiers who try to cross their border.  Obama, McCain, Bush, Congress, and the Senate just don't get it:  South Asia is the tinderbox of the world today; if it goes off, the repercussions will be unimaginable.  If that's the risk, then going after a few terrorists isn't worth it--even if those terrorists include Osama Bin Laden. The man is stuck in some mountain range more than 10,000 ft up; I don't stay up at night worried about him.

Sadly, the voice of reason can yell until its face is blue, but the ignorant are still deaf.
All the more reason to NOT !!!! elect Obama
The Declaration of Independence begins with a statement that includes the phrase "a decent respect for the opinions of mankind." We are not the only people on the planet. We may very well not be in God's eyes the most important people on the planet. We are part of a connected world community (no, I'm not talking about a one-world government), and like it or not, we cannot separate ourselves from the common fate of humanity. We do, though, have the power to lead from strength in a way that doesn't depend on bombs, if we choose to walk that road. I believe we are capable of making the better choice.
As a secular Pakistani living in America, here's a rebuttal:

This article does not represent the many people in Pakistan who are not Taliban sympathizers - and let me assure you, there are many. It also makes light of the fact that there are reasons for people being Taliban sympathizers, and that U.S. action in Pakistan is part of this reason. Continued U.S. action would alienate more people, and like it or not, America needs an ally in the region.

Benazir Bhutto would have been equally useless in this situation because the reason Pakistan is having trouble with terrorists along the Afghan border is the same reason America is having trouble with terrorists along that self-same border (America is, after all, on the other side of the border - right?) That reason is partly geography - it's all mountains there - difficult terrain to navigate. It's also partly the people who live there, who have historically been extremely independent and entrenched in tradition. There's a reason we all refer to the "tribal areas" in the North - the areas are indeed divided by tribe/clan, and they are essentially self-governing. Nobody has as yet managed to exert any control over them, for better or for worse. (And trust me, there are a lot of problems with that lack of control that are constantly pointed out, for instance by Pakistani women's rights groups).

Also, Pakistan's economy is hardly doing well in all of this - there's an independent group being formed to bail it out, lest anyone think that things are marvelous there.
Now that the seemingly complex paradox is out of the way, I shall attempt to disparage (in a civilized way) the 'comments' of the people who have ridiculed and insulted my beautiful country. It is so shameful that my first comment has still not surfaced even after so much time has passed and is being subjected to 'moderation' and cutting, but other spiteful and haranguing posts against a sovereign, independent and persevering nation have been so blatantly and confidently placed for the reading pleasure of others.
Who the heck are the few of you that are "predicting" whether or not an attack on U.S. interests will happen before or after the election?  Do you know something the rest of us don't?  I find it incredibly stupid that anybody would even mention such a thing.  You know nothing more than the guy next door, so why are you even commenting on the topic?

As far as some of you pointing out that the U.S. created the Taliban, please stop making it sound as if the U.S. knowingly and purposely funded a group that has morphed into what it is today...the world's second worst terror group.  The U.S. did not set out on a plan to create a group that would control large parts of Afghanistan and other territories through extremism and violence.  While I agree that several mistakes in judgement were made with regard to Iraq, global terrorism is not the product of the U.S.' actions.

As you can probably tell, I am sick and tired of the U.S. bashing.  It has gotten to a point where people from all over the world blame the U.S. for their ills.  Find the source of the problems in your own country and set out to fix them.  It's the product of your decisions as to why you are where you are today (yeah, I'm talking to you Pakistan)  I agree that the U.S. is a strong country with a large influence in certain parts of the world, but I don't believe that we have done it to create a world of instability (by the way, those of you thinking this is a time of instability...think again...this is the world's most peaceful time...you can look it up yourself).  I don't like to play "what-if's," but for all of you pointing the finger toward the U.S., just ask yourself this.  If those 19 extremists never made the decision to kill almost 3,000 people and topple the Twin Towers, would the U.S. be in either Iraq or Afghanistan?  You can answer yes to that question if you absolutely believe it, but you better have a compelling reason (and don't simply say "oil").

In closing, let me say this.  I am proud to be an American citizen.  I stand by our track record any day of the week to defend how we got to where we are today.  I agree that we have made some errors, which have had some serious consequences in some areas.  While I don't feel the need to point directly to France and England during WWII, I also would remind you not to forget it.  How different would Western Europe be today if not for the U.S. making the decision to enter the war on the other side of the world?  Honestly, I don't know, but I can guess it's probably a lot better than it would have been.  I'm not asking you to look past our current mistakes with past history, but you can believe we have done much more good in the world than could be expected of any country.  I could stand here and states the billions of dollars we give in financial aid each year, but that is just money.  I would rather point to the wonderful people of this country who have are nurtured to do good in this world.  How anyone in this world can sit there and hope for the demise of such a country is beyond me.
Pakistan seems like a country full of delusional fanatics. And these guys have been dubbed as our non-NATO ally by the Bush admin!! It seems like we have got our priorities wrong, isn't it?? When India have been stressing the fact that NWFP is full of terrorists backed by the all powerful ISI to wreak havoc in Kashmir and before that in Punjab, US and other NATO countries just turned a blind eye to that shared intelligence.Well, now we finally after billions of dollars in military and non-military aid we have acknowledged the reality. The common people of Pakistan hate us as all the developmental aid goes to the pockets of the corrupt govt. officials who are backed and propped by the US and the terrorists are cashing on that.We don't want to destroy Pakistan because Pakistan is a failed state and is destroying itself. They need to get their act straight and flush out the terrorists and their backers for their own survival.Otherwise, we cannot and will not jeopardize the security of our country and our allies and friends/ strategic partners like India. We should go in and hunt them down.
okay world, lets see how well you fare without U.S help. The world opinion seems to be anti U.S so lets just pull all of our troops out around the world bring all of them home every last one. Then we let it be known that everyone is on their own, no more troops, no more strength, and certainly no more money. When europe finally starts taking the brunt of islamic extremisism, genocide reigns over africa, ethnic cleansing kills millions in the baltics Indonesia is taken over by extremist and russia becomes the USSR again but on a much larger scale North korea, Iran and others threaten you all with nuclear warheads do not expect the United States of America to come to your rescue! It seems quite easy to critisize when you do nothing to help the word stability. We should tell Russia do what you want, we are done being the worlds police force. As long as you leave the continental U.S and our states and territories outside of that alone we are neutral on world affairs. It is none of our bussiness take it  to the United Nations and may your prayers for peace be answered. Then you see how troubled the world really is and through all of Americas mistakes just what she did for the world.I,m not proud of everything the U.S has done but most of those who critisize owe their freedom and right to critisize to the blood shed by brave young Americans. So stop sitting there and complaining and taking our money. The world would soon look alot different and I would bet you sit there and blame the U.S for letting it happen.
Obama won't do anything but end the war on terror. He will forget about 9-11 and the victoms.
