Philippines eyes ‘election of the century’

MANILA, Philippines – I was standing outside an old church in the poor Tondo neighborhood of Manila, watching people line up for subsidized rice, when I met Jose Torres. The 34-year-old charity worker got straight to the point.

"It’s getting close," he told me. "I’ve been watching it on the Internet. Very close."

It took me a few moments to realize Torres was talking about the U.S. election.

VIDEO: Filipinos weigh in on the U.S. election

"It’s the election of the century, what with Obama, but I think McCain will win." He couldn’t say quite why he thought McCain will win, but Jose has clearly been crunching the numbers, and meeting an American television news team was a chance to present his bit of punditry.

"We depend on the U.S., even though we are independent, so the November election is going to affect us," he said.

Obama-mania
Mostly though, it’s Obama who gets the attention on the streets here. In another part of Tondo, a crowd of young men flashed "V" for victory signs at us. "Obama," they shouted, while a young woman emerged from a side alley to tell me she was sure Obama would beat "that other guy."

Everybody seemed to have heard of Obama. Even in this impoverished neighborhood, he has captured people’s imagination and there is a notion – however vague – that he represents something different. He embodies the rise of an outsider that even Manila’s poorest can identify with.

Politics in the Philippines is rowdy and celebrity-driven; there's also a great deal of cynicism towards politicians.

"I think Obama will win," Diosdado Iranon, a rice farmer, told me. "I think he has the key to change."

The Philippines also has perhaps the strongest historic ties to the U.S. of any country in Asia. It was once home to vast U.S. military bases, and U.S. Special Forces are currently in the south of the country advising in the fight against a local insurgency.

So there is a strong interest in the American election, with two recent events underlining just how dependent the Philippines is on outside forces, particularly from the U.S.

Closely tied
The U.S. financial crisis has been headline news, dominating the raucous media here in recent days, as newspapers have outbid each other with speculation about whether Wall Street's mess will drag the Philippine economy down with it. The answer is probably not, but it has been a good read.

"When the U.S. sneezes, the Philippines always catches a cold," ran one newspaper headline.

And soaring world food prices this year have rocked a country that is now the world’s largest importer of rice, a painful reminder of how vulnerable they are to international trade.

The Philippines political elite has latched on to Obama’s fund raising methods, his use of the Internet and harvesting of small online donations. Filipino politics are notoriously money-driven, and they’ve been asking whether Obama’s system might serve as a model for the 2010 election here.

"It’s the first time so many youngsters have been brought into politics," former Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman, told me. "That’s a breakthrough," which she also thought could serve as a model for the Philippines.

She also thought that Obama’s experience as a boy in Indonesia – however fleeting – gives him a better understanding of Asia. "That’s good for us," she said – a common view in this region, even if the polls do show he could well lose to "that other guy."

Why would America REWARD complete Republican failure ?

We wont.

------------
Hello QC  :)
To BJ in Frankfort, KY.  PLEASEEEEE   You're afraid people may not vote intellectually and vote for Obama.  What world have you been living in?  We are voting for Obama because he's on the right side of every issue and he's extremely intelligent.  Learn the issues BJ!
An election of Obama will herald the largest transfer of wealth in the history of the world. Socialism has failed every where it has ever been tried but the U.S. is about to become a socialist state.  This is the end of the greatest country to have every been.  The U.S. will become a 2nd world country.
How does experience always trump knowledge? McCain has changed his position on almost every issue to pander to the electorate.  Obama might not have the years of experience but he has taken the time to learn the issues and surrounded himself with intelligent people who help make informed decisions.
I still believe the only reason most people support McCain is they don't like the race of Obama or his stand on individual rights (ie abortion, gay rights etc).
McCain supporters ignore all of the facts around them and just see White and Money.
This is all a dream what America is facing today, Bush has done a tremendous job since he's been in office and if you believe this for one minute, then you need a head check up and believe me, McCain is too old to want to make it any better and Ms. Palin is out of her league.  GO OBAMA/BIDEN
Filipinos love whoever they find most of the time on the television. So there is no surprise that they pick Barack - especially in that part of Manila. On these poor areas of the Philippines - their choice of whoever will become president is not always based on merit but on perception. That is why they voted for Erap and FPJ before (I'm sure they never voted for Arroyo - the latter like Bush just stole the presidency from the true winner.)

But what can we do? "Vox populi est suprema lex" is the cradle of democracy and sense, no matter how wise it is, will never prevail against the number of the ignorant. Look at what happened in the Philippines. They thought Erap was bad, now they have the worse President ever - a cheat with unsatiable tendency for corruption.

Besides, there is no way of knowing who is what capable of what unless they started calling the shots. So ultimately, choosing the president is a matter of "opinion" and not wholly based on facts.

So pick whoever you want the best - and don't judge your neighbor whom he voted for. Your opinion will never be better than his because whom you voted for will never do everything that you wanted for from him.
Actually it goes like this:
"When America sneezes, the whole world catches a cold, except for the Philippines...
It catches pneumonia."
Whoever wins in the upcoming election, if he will just deliver on 75% of his campaign promises, everyone will be a winner.
I agree with Beth of Mo I am a Phil Am, Senator Mccain is sincere I trust him.

LO
Why is it a lot of Americans do not know history that much? Philippines was a colony of the USA from mid 1890's to 1945. I wonder why Ian Williams was not stating the entire facts? Is it shameful to accept that a "great country" has a past of colonizing another country? Then now there's Guantanamo, possibly to be forgotten by the shameful Bushonomics and Bushoworldpolicies.

I am an Obama supporter, not because of change but because Obama's resume is a stand out. Obama completed education in Harvard, became president of Law Review, served as community organizer, when he could accept high pay jobs. Obama became a USA senator. Obama is a self made icon.

While McCain may be a war hero (depends who you talk to), McCain finished in the bottom 5 of his class. McCain was from a privelege family, yet could not improve his class performance. McCain has more than 10 houses, married two times with a second wife, a wealthy woman from Arizona. McCain was previously a subject of the senate investigation, with a verdict or "poor judgment". McCain's debate speech signifies that he live in the "past". McCain or Mcsame were wrong for voting the Iraq War. Now McCain wants to stay in Iraq for many years to come. McCain wants to drill, drill, drill, instead of alternative energy. McCain is a flip flop for thinking that the economy was sound - only to be negated by the Wall Street financial collapse (by the REPUBLICAN watch). McCain has no vision, very bad in forecast and I can guarantee he plays very bad in CHESS. Therefore Mcsame, as per his voting record, would be another 4 more years of Bush.

My question to all voters, do you want another 4 more years of financial collapse, 4 more years of no alternative energy and 4 more years of $12B of Iraq war?

Voters, enough is enough. USA may be a great country in the past, but USA is now turning into a 3rd world country.

Look around you, your road, your public service, your judicial system...all have such bad services.

If you do not believe what I say, get a passport, pay your airfare ticket, travel to the Developed World (as USA calls itself a developed world) and Compare.

Why kind of Catholics are these Fillipinos who cheer on a 100% pro-choice ticket like Obama & Biden? These people are just plain old hypocrites pure and simple!
My wife is from the Philippines and I have been to the Philippines several times.  I am a Republican but when there was talk of Senator Obama running for President well before he ever announced it I thought I would vote for him.  That was two years ago, I won't vote for him next month.  Senator McCain didn't sweep me off my feet so he's not the reason I'm not voting for Senator Obama.  I read and learned more about both candidates.  I also paid attention to their reactions and comments in interviews and it became very clear that Senator Obama cannot lead.  He cannot make a decision.  He tells a lot of half truths.  Most politicians are guilty of the later however.

Mark my words, the economy will be better in a couple years and it will continue to grow - it's cyclical.  There will be bad times again, we're just in a huge correction period.  Whoever is the President during that time will be lauded as a hero.  The President gets too much credit when things go right and too much blame when things go wrong.

If senator Obama runs for and wins the governorship of Illinois and does a successful job I will vote for him to be the President of the United States next time there is no attractive Republican candidate.  Bottom line, he needs more experience and he needs to prove he can lead and make decisions.
TO JACK:  PHILIPPINE HISTORY: THE PHILIPPINES AS IT WAS UNDER SPAIN FOR 300 YEARS WAS NOT ABLE TO TAKE CONTROL OF ITSELF.  THE U.S. TOOK IT AS A COLONY FOR 30 YEARS.  IN OR ABOUT 1930- 1935 THE PHILIPPINES BECAME A COMMONWEALTH.  A TEN YEAR PERIOD OF TRAINING FOR SELF GOVERNMENT.  THE SECOND WORLD WAR BROKE OUT AND THE P.I. WOULD HAVE BEEN LEFT TO BE UNDER JAPANESE RULE AND YOU WOULD ALL BE SPEAKING JAPANESE IF IT WASN'T FOR THE AMERICANS WHO DIED FOR THE P.I. DON'T YOU REMEMBER THE DEATH MARCH.  IF YOU DON'T READ  "GHOST SOLDIERS"...ABOUT THE MEN IMPRISONED IN CABANATUAN.  SHAME ON YOU FOR NOT KNOWING WHO REALLY CAME TO YOUR RESQUE IN THE P.I.     PILIPINOS WANT AND DESIRE EVERYTHING AMERICAN....IF THIS WAS NOT TRUE YOU WOULD BE BACK OVER THERE.
Well stated, Mr. Gray
Jack, Palmdale, CA,

Yes, and how did the U.S. military "brutally force" the Phillipine into a US Colony? Oh they just slaughtered about a million filipinos from 1899-1901; 600,000 on Luzon alone (the entire population of the Philippines at that time was 6.5 million). Funny; I don't seem to remember reading about that in high school history class. But in the end, I'm sure the US has more than made up for it by promoting economic growth and countless opportunity to filipinos since then. My family sure has benefitted by having the honor of serving in the US Army, Air Force, and Navy. This honor provided the opportunities to my family that formed the basis of everything I have.
Wow ... really? A piece about what the Philippines thinks?

Talk about an opinion from the irrelevant.
Personally I don't care what the rest of the world thinks of our election. The US needs to stop worrying about the world's affairs and start concentrating on our own problems. I don't want the world to hate us but we cannot be the world's police any longer. Trillions of dollars in debt that our children's children will need to deal with.

Our government as a whole is a failure to us and the world. No single party can be blamed and no single party can fix this. What we need is people for the people back in office.

Of the 4 candidates we have out there, Palin is the only one so far that has proven to shake up government and reduce waste. I don't agree with her stances on abortion or gay rights but those issues pale in comparison to the tough times facing our country and the corruption that exists in our government today. She has both democrats and republicans in her cabinet.

We need a goverment that remembers that we are ultimately American's first.
The Philippines is unfortunately a perfect example of where the U.S. is headed if concentration of wealth, trickle-down policies and reckless deficits aren't stopped. You'll see massive numbers of downwardly people and a tiny upper class living in gated communities. The government will be too indebted to do much, and people will be told to just fend for themselves. Abortion will be illegal and Social Security will be having big families. We see how well all that has worked in the Philippines.
With luck and perseverance, I am sure that Obama can lead us so the the U.S. becomes as strong, diverse and free as the Phillipines. He the finish the job that Carter started.

It's not a surprise to see the down and out voting for someone who promises solutions to all the problems.....it's a typical mindset of the Filipinos...looking at their celebrity politicians for salvation. I am one of many Filipinos living abroad (US) who will vote for John McCain a true and tested American Hero....he is ready to lead not that guy OBAMA! NO WAY! The uneducated and left wing nuts in our universities will always favor the populist.
The President, the Congress are not responsible for
the colapsed of Wall Street. It's those CEO's greed that walked out with  people's money in their wallet. And I am sure that after these are all done  and taking care of, whoever are responsible be prosecuted if not get something. So, everybody don't get too excited and finger pointing or it will haunt you back. I am glad that we have a President that make this country a safer place to live. Or ended be like the southern part of the Philippines.

And for those Filipino's that did not feel the pain of our ancestors that they suffered before the American saved us, the sacrifices of the Veteran's (both Filipino and American) for our country, shame...shame...shame! Without them, we won't be here. Look back and reflect. Obama? Dig deeper and you will know who he really is. At least McCain is not far way to the right. He can listen to both sides. At first, I thought I am not going to vote for either but as I did my research and gathered facts, I am not voting for a dangerous one.

Politicians in the Philippines? Mostly are corrupt. And it's been like that for years and years and years. Both sides are all the same.

Again, THANK YOU AMERICA FOR THE OPPORTUNITIES!!! We should be thankful that here in America, when you work you are going somerwhere. Unlike the Philippines to where I came from, you worked twice as much and you are not going anywhere and the government can care less about the people. That's why  thousands or maybe more now of filipinos immigrated and worked overseas to have a better life. As long as I have 3 meals a day, a house, good school, good road, a job, a car to take me to work that's all that matters.

Wall Street will be resolved and I am not worry about it. Thinking positively is very important in life. We only live once and why worry about something that it may not worth worrying? Sometimes it can get exaggerated. Let's just all watch and see what these politicians can do for us. One thing for sure, they are not like the Philippine Politicians where there's no meat to their promises.
What kind of an article is this? Who cares what people in Philippines want to win in our election? Philippines is a third word country without much influence in the world.  We need to stop caring about what other countries think (especially insignificant ones) and start worrying about ourselves.
I am Filipina american and I am voting for McCain/Palin.  I would rather suffer four more years under the Republican administration than in the hand of Democrap they, Obama is not qualified to be Commander in Chief, he cannot defend the american people, and all his friends are corrupt from Farrakhan, to Rezko, to Kilpatrick and his racist pastor. This website is the proof that he is scary person http://www.atlah.org/broadcast/ndnr07-28-08.html  Please broadcast this video to Obamas supporter
1.) The Philippines' citizens are not well informed about Obama's views on different aspects: politics, life, etc. Majority of them even don't know that Obama is one of the people who made the US economy crumble.
2.) The Philippines' citizens (especially in the area where poverty lies) might not understand well political party affiliations. They might just see Democratic Party = Democracy. That is why people are infavor of Obama.
3.) The Philippines' citizens (pertaining to rich people/families). I see them as a joke right knowing that majority of them are in favor of Obama. They should know better.

By the way, I am a Filipino. Was born and brought up from the Philippines. My opinions are solely based on my observations as I was growing up in the Philippines.

Obama's supporters are naive and confuse on what Obama's policies will be if he becomes the US president. I just listened to the radio and the callers were Obama supporters who knew nothing or confuse on what Obama's plans are for the US. Shouting for Change? It is BIG joke! Obama can't even make any clear specific policies and or programs.
We should vote for the candidate who wants it less, because he is the less selfish.  We should vote for the candidate who sees less, because he is the less distracted.  And we should vote for the candidate with less experience, because he has developed less bad habits.
It's true that Filipinos vote on the basis of charisma & celebrity status of a candidate without any regard for issues and that is why the Philippines is now the basketcase of Asia, when it used to be the number two economy, next only to Japan. Thus, am amused that many of my relatives in the US are going for McCain/Palin (looks like changing citizenship also changed their mentality).  I am made to understand that this has something to do with the abortion issue, which is a very important issue for us Catholics. But, the US is not a Catholic country and thus voting on this single issue, they remain as Filipinos. If I were a US citizen, however, I cannot vote this way as taking away abortion clinics could result in more underground or hanger abortions.  Pro Choice will never understand the beauty of a Pro Life position unless they take time to study the philosophical, theological and psychological basis of why Pro Life.
Now, Palin is defintely Pro Life, but the way she is doing it, she is rumming it down the throat of a Materialistic America (who never has time for such profound studies. Note: Maher even thinks religion is for psychos. He thinks he is bright, but it shows he is lazy, ill-informed, uneducated, or just plain stupid, or all of the above.). Palin's approach will never work -- she's putting the horse before the cart.
Obama has never been clear re his position on abortion, and this is because i think he is cognizant of the separation of state and religion, as do Biden, who also happens to be a Catholic.  But, here is the point, a) election is a secular activity, and thus, should be weighed based on secular issues, and maybe social issues too, but definitely not on a single religious issue. b) McCain camp have lied on many an occassion in the most sleazy way, so if you still insist on imputing religion, the question now is: who is now more christian betw the two. Obama? or "the other guy"? c) Forget the celebrity status of Obama or his calm, cool disposition in the face of crisis. You can also forget the erratic behaviour and the stunts of McCain, he wants the presidency so bad, he is now gambling everyting. I believe you should look at who listens most between the two. Isn't it that it's Obama? For afterall, listening well is the mark of all intelligent people.  McCain will never listen to a Pro Lifer if this will not be expedient for him politically.  Obama may never be a Pro Lifer, he is too much of a pragmatist, but because he has more intelligence, he has more chance of understanding why there should be a position like a Pro Life, and be more tolerant of Catholics. That's the audacity of hope. That is also why I think there were 200,000 people in Berlin when he spoke.
That is also why I think McCain can only meet world leaders with preconditions.  Elect Barack Obama and the impact of this worldwide can be described in more ways than one.  No kidding, there will be hope that Iran and North Korea might just surrender their nuclear ambitions just like that. Cuba might even start thinking of democracy. Oh, yes, no joke. Countries wouldn't mind acceding to anyone with moral ascendancy, not one with arms superiority.
Certainly. we still do not like Pax Americana, which is now more than a centuty of US imperialism and of a mentality that money comes first.  But, it is better than the pagan alternatives of China, Russia, or India, who are now posed to be the next imperialists.  At leasts, the core of America in the many quiet suburbs and counties is still somewhat christian, in spite of the insistence of Hollywood to export moral decadence.
In all due respects to Kathy in New Mexico.  Although I am a Catholic Filipino, the neglect and discrimination of different ethnic Filipino groups are the reason for the uprising in the South.  Not a group that wants to take over the Philippines but a group whose identity and religion has been given little aid, little recognition and voice in the current government.  There are many different cultures in the P.I. and not just that of Manila.  Actually, the seat of the govt. should be in Cebu where there is a majority speaking Bisayan group.
for all the SELL OUT pinoys that keep bringing up how Obama "shunned" GMA...........good! who cares!??!  GMA is the worst president next to Marcos anyways! she has presided over the worst graft and corruption since Marcos. and what does Obama not meeting with GMA have to do with ANYTHING?? he's trying to be elected HERE. sus! as if you have time to breathe when you are running for President of the United States.

I want to take the time to state that Im an American married to a Pinay and we cant BELIEVE how many horrible, selfish, sell-out filipinos there are here in Texas. they have forgotten what it means to be Filipino. they're so quick to talk shit about other pinoys as if they didnt come here once themselves........they tear each other down and they are the sorriest excuse for humanity Ive seen in years. no REAL Pinoy would ever vote Republican! hello!!! they are racist bastards. Michelle Malkin ring a bell?!?!
ahahahhah!

anyways...GO OBAMA.

in 2010 I hope to God Bayani Fernando wins the Filipino Presidency and fix the entire Philippines, like he did as mayor of Marikina, Ph.
How can people say that four more years with Bush's twin brother will benefit our nation? I am marrying into a Filipino family come March, and I am glad that his family in the Philippines is supporting Obama. Not only is he the best choich for a dramatic change in this country, but it will bring us out of this rut that Bush put us in!

I have no idea how anyone can think that the situation we are is now os "prosperous." Another depression will not make this country prosper. I don't know about you, but I don't like spending almost $4.00 a gallon for gas. You may be a rich bastard holding on to all of your hard-earned money, but for those of us who make less than you and STILL manage to give to charity, we need a dramatic change in order to bring those rich bastards to their knees and give them a good smacking around. Nothing will do that better than to take their money and do some good with it.

OBAMA/BIDEN '08!!!!
larry You obviously havent been paying attention to the Palin interviews. Her answers start from first base and end up in left field. This is what the republican party is trying to sell america, if anyone is all flash and no substance it's Palin.
I have to say, It is nice to know, that Filipino's are interested in the U.S. elections. I had the pleasure of visiting many cities in the Philippines while in the U.S. Navy, on two different ships. The USNS Mercy, when we gave medical aide to the filipino people in 1987,that experience opened my eyes, it gave me an undying respect for the Filipino people. It is one of the most beautiful countries I have been. I hope to return there one day and help those who are in need. I am up in the air on who to vote for, both candidates want "change" as do I, this country cannot take much more abuse by its officials, I for one am tired of it, as most people are here in the states. I am leaning towards Obama, but I am investgating both candidates, for it will not only effect the U.S. but the whole world. I just hope that whomever is elected keep the filipino people in mind and realize we all need help NOW!!!!
The dumbing down of America is complete. The community organizer for ACORN ( registering people to vote) locally they have only filed democrat voters and thrown away republican registrations. In next door state of Washington there are 39 ACORN organizers indicted, in jail or in prison.) Many more nationwide in deep kimchee. Obama went to Harvard. Oh yes on the basis of the color of his skin and intervention of influental friends. Some of the dumbest people I have known were intelligent but dumb as hell living life. Obama said in his books (radical William Ayres is believed to have written the first book) that he used drugs while a poor youth. Well poor boys sell drugs to use drugs. Is Obama going to be our first drug dealer elected president? Vote for a breath of clean air. Vote for Sarah Palin.  WWTerry
I am a business owner here in the US, married to a Filipino American.  I hope Obama wins as well.  with all of his tax plans that don't support business.  We will see how the country reacts when businesses can't make it.  I will love to lay off my 50+ employees.  Obama is a joke who just makes promises to the poor.  Love it or hate it.  Not too many poor people employ anyone.  Piss off the rich and they will cut employment.
"ayoko kay obama" I dont like obama. We heard about outsourcing jobs will be pull-out outside US.
I'm glad that Filipinos are supportive of Obama. Regarding their insurgency: America has no business being involved in any civil conflict of the Philippines. This is something that Filipinos should tend to on their own.
Obama/Biden for "Change." What kind of change are we talking about here, good or bad? What I don't understand is how a junior senator from Ilinois is supposed to be the next "Messiah" of US politics. Can someone please tell me three important legislative/judicial/important bill that he architect or been involved in passing? Are we that fed up with this current administration that we are ready to overlook obvious shortcomings of Barack Obama? I for one am not!
President of the Harvard Law Review vs. 5th from the bottom of his class?  Obama wins on brains alone.  McCain can't  get from point A to point B on the reasoning scale.  He's not much smarter than Bush and that's scary!
McCain voted for 90% of GB's policies.  Policies that brought us to this mess.  That to me is lack of judgement.  His years of experience do not mean he is capable to lead this country.  Voting for McCain is simply saying we deserve to be in this mess.
What gets me is Obama has admitted to using drugs in college, therefore he is isn't qualified to work for the FBI, DEA, CIA, etc...but for some unknown reason this doesn't disqualify him to RUN OUR COUNTRY! Plus, for me, Obama/Biden sounds to similar to Osama BinLaden. No Way, No How, NoBama!
The USA Dream Team 2008-2012

President - Barack Obama
Vice President - John McCain
Secretary of State - Wesley Clark
Secretary of Treasury - Ron Paul

OR

President - John McCain
Vice President - Barack Obama
Secretary of State - Wesley Clark
Secretary of Treasury - Ron Paul
Mabuhay ng America! Mabuhay ng Philippines! I'm voting for the candidate of the non-incumbent party in every election, because whoever is currently in office, and the parties they represent, have brought this country to its current financial crisis. It's time for change. Let's change everything we can. -Fnord-
I would personally go with Obama.
I am a politician during my college days and I have run into office and somehow won seats in Student Council.
Saying so, I believe in Obamas' vision.
It is far far ahead of what McCain.

However, I would support McCains' Vice President.
wow, that's great Obama is so popular in the phillipines

what about all those red states?  Anybody care about them
Everyone's clamoring for change but you need to be aware of what your asking for: A charismatic young Cuban named Fidel Castro promised change and the people of Cuba have been living in hell since then.  Hugo Chavez promised change and the people of Venezuela regret their decision to elect him now. Mamoud Ahmadinojad promised change in Iran and the people have seen their hopes dashed.  Nancy Pelozi when she was elected to the Speaker of the House of representatives promised alot of changes in the first ninety days of her appointment and what a disaster that has been.  When the democrats got into congress gas was $2.20 a gal and unemployment was 5%.  The democrats ruled Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and instituted a policy of "everyone should own a house and be able to get a home or car loan" so the banks were encouraged to make weak loans and we're now seeing the results in failed institutions.  Obama wants to tax the rich, but who creats our jobs?  Certainly not poor people.  You can't take the foundation of a house away and expect it to stand.  More government intervention in our lives is not something we should look forward to but that is exactly what Obama is proposing, and as far as campaign promises go you can ignore most of them as election candy.  No matter who is elected taxes will go up (remember George Bush seniors famous line_"read my lips, no new taxes".  He raised taxes!Politicians Lie people. Anyone who watches Jay Lenos' "Jaywalking" knows how utterly stupid Americans can be, don't be stupid enough to think that the government can help you live your life better by taking your taxes and giving a portion of them back to you at their discretion.  Wouldn't it be nice if they took less taxes and let you decide how to run your own affairs? Less then eight months ago both Joe Biden and Bill Clinton said that Barack Obama was not ready to be president and unless he recently graduated from the DeVry school of "How to be a President" nothings changed-he gives good speaches.
I think the real question is who has America’s best interest at heart. On one side we have a man who has supported the U.S. his entire life, who dedicated his life to public service both in the military and in congress. On the other side we have someone who has bad mouthed the U.S. his entire life, someone who has never risen above his own selfish goals in life. I think the choice is clear who should and will be our next president. And to all the Obama supporters just take the time to listen to what you will be voting for, I think if you do you’ll also realize who the right choice for president should be.
Obama is very astute and is already showing good judgement in world affairs.  Fiipinos love Obama, particularly when he snobbed our President, Gloria M Arroyo, during her recent visit to the US. Arroyo is a very corrupt leader.  She has made a mockery of the democratic system by ignoring court summons and subpoenas issued by bodies investigating her wrongdoings.  We do not understand why she wants to surpass the wealth of Gates and Buffett, people who are ingenious and hardworking, people with integrity. In the meantime, our poverty level has now gone from 25 to 55% of our population.  That is why we have the most number of migration in the world.  Many Filipinos are in the US, Australia, etc to escape this sinking ship. I am also just about to give up if not for my 100 employees who would certainly join the statistics on poverty if i close shop.  For your info, Intel Philippines is closing shop and there will be 5,000 of their employees joining the ranks of the unemployed.  Intel is moving their operation to Vietnam as they cannot stomach the pervasive corruption of government in both local and national level.  Philippines is the second most dangerous place for media practitioners as well, next to Iraq.  Already, there have been more than 500 abductions and killings of media people critical of Arroyo's administration.  I think Ian Williams knows that, so he should be careful.
So, it was indeed fantastic that Obama snobbed Arroyo.  He should avoid her like a highly contagious, uncurable malaria. The day Arroyo goes to jail is only the day Obama can come visit this country.
This is for Fred Duque...How long have you been a citizen of the United States? And, who inculcated you on race in America? You started out sounding like a racist, calling Obama "a colored person," and ended up calling your own Filipino compatriots IGNORANT! You too are a person of color! Do you like being called a "colored person?" People like you make me sick. You enjoy everything the USA offers you, but you harbor racism within. Climb down from your tower in the sky or go back to living in Manila poverty. There, you will not have to "endure" "colored" liberals. Your compatriots may be liberal and you a "social conservative" but, I bet if you were living in poverty you would also be a liberal. You are a first class HYPOCRITE!!!!!!!!!!
My wife is Filipina and still lives in Pampanga, Philippines. The economic woes of the U.S. has not slowed my cash flow to support her or her family there. Having said that, I can't wait for her arrival here in Alaska so that we can begin having a dual income to help out more of her family.
In response to Obama's education and GPA versus McCain's:  Thomas Edison, owner of 1,093 U.S. patents, only had 3 months of formal education.  Intelligence must be judged by performance, not pedigree.
When McCain applied for Annapolis, so did 50,000 others; Annapolis accepted 1,100 of the best and brightest.  Even the lowest ranking graduate of an American military academy is miles ahead of most school's "magna cum laude's."  By the way, commander-in-chief is not an entry-level position, especially for someone who has never had a real job!
PS: USMA is a much better school than Annapolis...even if they can't recruit football players!
Obama is a Cebuano! Long live Obama! He will bring his hope and change to the Philippines and we will soon become a world power with Obama's ideas of hope and change. What's good for Obama is great for us!
