In Russia, Obama beats McCain

MOSCOW – "I’m against that one – the aggressive one – I'm for Obama," said Valentina Savina, a lottery ticket seller on the Old Arbat, Moscow’s busy central pedestrian thoroughfare.

"[I’m] against McCain," she added when asked what her views were on the U.S. presidential candidates. "He's against Russia."

Alexander Maleshov, a cab driver in Moscow, agreed. "As far as I know, the Republicans are strongly against us," he said.

VIDEO: Russians watch the U.S. election

Savina and Maleshov are not alone in their views of McCain and the GOP, according to a recent poll of Russians conducted at the beginning of September by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center. The survey found that 27 percent of respondents would choose Sen. Barack Obama if they could vote in the U.S. elections, as opposed to just 6 percent choosing Sen. John McCain.

(According to the poll, 34 percent of respondents also said, "I wouldn’t vote for anyone," and the remaining 33 percent responded that the question was "hard to answer.")

The results are partly a product of McCain’s outspoken criticism of the country and its popular prime minister – and former president – Vladimir Putin. For instance, McCain has advocated excluding Russia from the G8 in response to "diminishing political freedoms" under Putin.

They are also the result of McCain being a member of the Republican Party. In a country where the Bush administration’s policies, from the war in Iraq to the planned installation of missile defense systems in Poland and the Czech Republic, are highly unpopular, it would be hard for any GOP candidate to gain much of a following.

Georgia conflict has an effect
Also working against McCain is the conflict in the former Soviet republic of Georgia. The U.S. and Russia have supported opposite sides, with the U.S. voicing strong support for Georgia and Russia backing South Ossetia and Abkhazia, two separatist regions on Georgian territory.

In many ways the Georgia War was fought on the airwaves and the television screens as much as it was on the ground, and Russians’ response to the candidates tend to follow what they heard in the Russian media.

And while both candidates were critical of Russia’s military actions on Georgian soil beyond the separatist areas, many Muscovites I spoke with quoted McCain’s statement at a campaign stop in York, Pa., when he declared that "We [Americans] are all Georgians," as one reason for their leaning toward Obama.

"In both cases, it will be very hard relations between United States and Russia," said Anton Lopatin, 23, taking a lunch break on the Arbat from his job in financial services.

Many Russians agree with him. Less than a fifth of Russians respondents to the recent poll described U.S. relations as "friendly," "neighborly" or "calm."

Opposite sides
Overall, the saber-rattling over Georgia has sparked a greater interest in U.S. politics and how it can affect Russia.

In the poll, 47 percent of respondent said they "closely" or "somewhat" follow the U.S. elections, up from 36 percent just two months earlier.

"America, it’s the biggest country," said Natalia Golubeva, a 26-year-old who works in financial services, "so we are also interested in the policy … of your country."

That shows that we need to have McCain in the office. They want Obama so they can walk over him!!
If Russia is headed back to true socialism, why wouldn't the Russians like Obama??? Peas in a pod!
I'm not sure what the relevance of this article is to the American voter.  Since when do the Russian people have the best interests of the U.S. in mind?
The opinions of the Russian people are interesting maybe Mr Obama can reform their goverment and solve all of their problems he should have a lot of time after he fixes all of ours. He can sit down ant talk it out and shazam problem solved.
Who really cares what the Russians think of our Presidential candidates? If they like being under the thumb of Putin (and they still are!), good for them. The fact is, they don't have the freedom to vote like we do, so they can say what they want about our elections, but they'll never share that freedom. There are way more important issues to consider than just what either Obama or McCain thinks or feels about Russia, though Russia certainly is an important issue to deal with (moreso than many are willing to believe now after the Cold War is over). Time will tell as far as whether Russia will be a significant threat again. Time will also tell whether Obama or McCain will be our next President, but the Russians won't have any hand in that choice!
WHO CAREs ABOUT THE OPINIONS OF COMMUNIST. I DON'T THINK THEY HONESTLY CARE ABOUT THE WEST.
This is why it is important to note that  Russians don't have a free press or a representative republic.
The question should be, " why can't they vote for their own President?"
America has her self interest, thank G-d they can not vote in our election.
If the Russians are against a canidate that should tell us who we need to choose. If they want Obama it shows they know they can run over him. Open your eyes Americans!!
Even the Russians know who we need.  Wake up America!
What?  No comments from Obama lovers?  Don't you all want to be "one" with Russia, Venezuela, China, Iran, Cuba, North Korea, et. al?  Obama is just the kind of pushover the rest of the world wants.  He's just the weak link socialist and communist world leaders want to bring America into their fold.  And Obama is just the person to do it.  How naive Obama supporters are.
Um, let me know why we should care.  Are Russians now voting in our elections?  Has anyone thought about why the Russians would be for Obama?  It most certainly couldn't be so they could take over the number 1 spot in the world by having a weaker US.  It must be that they want the strongest leader, someone that will make sure the US isn't relegated to the back seat.  Yeah, that's it, that's the ticket!
This is another excellent reason to vote for McCain.  Even the Russian people know that the inexperienced Obama would be a push-over and that McCain will work hard to defend America's rights and freedoms.
Russians are being brainwash by the Pro-Putin Russian Media just like way back in the USSR time. Naturally the Russioans are program by now to favor Obama. Cause they want a weak US President like Obama. So that Russia will be able to kick and stump the USA all they want just like the weakling Jimmy Carter. And raise the oil price back to $150 or $200 per barrel. And Russia will also use threats and blackmails against EU by controlling the Natural Gas pipeline spigot flowing to EU. Just like it did on Ukraine and Belorussia last winter. The question is are we going to let Russia be a bully under a weakling appeaser defeatist Obama presidency. The reality is Russia has nothing to sell to the World except Natural Gas and Oil. So Russia will be the Bogeyman to the World Economy, World security and Stability by supporting rogue countries like Iran. So the price of Oil wil remain high.

Yes Russia wants Obama to win because Obama is weak. So Russia unstoppable can do what ever they want. And Russia do not want McCain to win. Because McCain carry a Big Stick. And is strong on Security and Stability around the world. There are so many bad, evil, rogue countries out there today. Obama's appeasements and defeatism is a danger to world peace just like Neville Chamberlain and Jimmy Carter. History teaches us that in a dangerous World we need a strong leader.
Russia is losing its western population by almost 2% a year due to Alcohol, 50% abortion to birth rate and no western immigration.  They also can't protect their borders from the Chinese that are moving into Siberia through Mongolia.  Russia is a dying country that has a 40% Muslim ranked armed forces.  They have about 33% of the Nuclear warheads on Earth.  Russia's future is very scary for the world.
America should get with Russia to build the International Peace Bridge-Tunnel from Alaska to Siberia.  We should also help them to rebuild their rail service to fit ours so they will become a better Democracy through trade and tourism.
It's time to get rid of the repugnant ones who have done nothing but antagonize the Russians rather than befriend them.  It's a pity that after Clinton was trying to get Russia into NATO along comes belligerent Bush who has done everything to push Russia out of NATO and into becoming a new foe.  We don't need another stinking Cold War, well the repugnant ones do because they have to use fear and smear to jazz up their voter base.

Time to stop antagonizing Russia and to start getting them back to being our friends as they should be.  Is it any wonder that Russians support a more belligerent government when our country has had a more beliigerent government for 8 years?

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
It doesnt surprise me that Russia and all other aggressive countries would rather see Obama as president, they certainly dont want someone like John
McCain who would stand up to them. The more I hear how these aggressive countries want Obama, the stronger my support for McCain. In times of crisis I want a president who would tell them all to go to you know where. And as for so called celebrities who want to make decisions, stick to acting and singing while brave men and women risk their lives to keep you safe.
America is saber rattling, while Russia moves to consolidate it's stranglehold on 80 % of the European energy supply..........hmmmm, it appears that the Russian people are as misinformed about their governments intentions as the American people are....in that, we have a commonality..........
Democracy is based on respect not on the right to vote every 4 years i respect your teritory you respect mine right now we nothing to show off wiles't we have over 100 military instalations arount the world you think they like our army in their back yard? lets bring our troops HOME !
...."I’m against that one – the aggressive one – I'm for Obama," said Valentina Savina, a lottery ticket seller..." WOW, that's funny! lets really look at what he's saying, I want the one we (Russia) can shove around if need be.
Russia has a long long history of nation grabbing, and a renewed, fervent nationalism. Obama's dopey pro-marxist foreign policy ideas would allow mother Russia to flex her muscles MORE FREELY - Georgia is just the first step, Poland, Ukraine and the Baltic States are watching what happens in the Caucasus. Sadly, many Americans are more concerned with Obama's tailored suits and vapid speeches, rather than the solid posture of a seasoned statesman like John McCain.
OF COURSE the Russians want Obama! Much like a burgler would rather rob a house guarded by a daschund instead of a dobermann.
Well, this is hardly a surprise. The Bush policies destroyed our image around the world. I have travelled and lived abroad and I know for a fact that no one can understanding Bush being reelected. If McCain gets elected there will be not a shred of respect left for us. We will be a joke!
We should not bow down to Russia, nor should we try to rattle there cage. I think americans need to stop expecting everyone to live in our culture and respect other countries way of life....... MAybe Russia did respond to Georgia in a crushing way, But did Georgia really need to start the shelling of South Ossetia, I mean we need the Russian relations Just like they need ours. Neither will admit it but its more helpful than not. We need a president that can balance the affairs of our country, mend the relations that matter to us, and gaurd us as well against those that wave a sword behind our backs. Sounds like an Obama job to me....... McCain will only carry the same ole lets fight it out attitude..... Just my take on things.
Not surprising.... The low numbers thinking we are friendly would be expected after recent events. It would be interesting to see how that feeling has ranged over the last couple of years though.
It would also be nice to know if the Russian Press has pictured the Deffensive Missiles ( to hit incoming warheads)as such or as Offensive ones with warheads that could be used against ground targets?
My wife is a Russian with a Green Card. She says that if Obama is elected our life will be very difficult for hte next four years.
if your a Russian or a Democrar ,Obama spells communism.  So it doesn't surprise me that the Russians would prefer Obama.  He is bad for America
I hope all of you people posting comments are registered voters...otherwise, who cares what YOU think?
McCain seems to forget that when a country has a whole bunch of nukes pointing at you that you need to talk to them not threaten them.
We still have it in our power to destroy the world with our weapons. McCain doesn't appear to comprehend that.
It is weakness to threaten and to saber rattle.
True strength is in the hands of the man who knows how to choose his battles.
McCain is at war with everyone including himself.
Look guys. You never live in Communist country before so don't think the communist countries care about America. They just want to run over America. They will vote for weakest candidate so they can play game, pull and push him around. So think twice before you vote!
The Bush policies did "nothing" EXCEPT TO PROTECT THE INTEREST AND WELFARE OF AMERICA...where are you from...Russia, China, Venezuela, etc...?!

Be aware of the "communist" underlings in "socialist" clothing and their offsprings...Putin, Hu Jin Tao, etc...

God Bless America! McCain and Palin for President and Vice President...!!!!

It is amazing just how many people in America really don't understand the situations that we are in. This is the reason we need OBAMA/BIDEN so that we can be respected around the world again. I am sure that some of the people commenting in the negative have not traveled outside the country in a while and don't know that globalization is here and never going anywhere.
Yonatan Pomrenze omitted the fact that not only Russians prefer Obama over MaCain, but also most of the civilized world.

Hello!

These are average Russians. Not "commies". Not government officials.

Just regular people who are concerned about world affairs, especially the relationship between Russia and the US.

If we were asked to pick between Putin and a moderate Russian candidate who the heck do you think most Americans would pick?
Tom Kaye made an excellent point. The comments were the views of ordinary folks like most of us. The haters are being a bit over the top with their comments.

I don't forsee Obama as being weak on world affairs.
I see Obama being very similar to Teddy Roosevelt as he would walk softly but will carry a big stick. He's made it clear that not only will he rebuild our military but he will make it stronger. Our stick is broken and we're not in an ideal posititon of military strength right now. If push had come to shove in the Georgia crisis, we could not have stood up to Russia if we wanted to despite our tough talk and Putin knows it.

Republicans have either forgotten or don't realize that probably the best President at quiet diplomacy was Bush senior, whose decision not to invade Iraq after the first Gulf War turned out to be the right one. It was Reagan who stated " A nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought." Bluffing the soviets with his mock star wars project that was the final blow to bring down the walls of communism was a brilliant piece of diplomacy by Reagan.

Don't mistake diplomacy for weakness and stupidity for strength.
The Russians prefer Obama due to his willingnes to be a part of our world community, instead of McCain who makes fun of those who are trying to heal the damage to relations done by the Bush administration.
Interesting that the media wants to know what Russians think about our election and who Russians want to install as our president. What do the Georgians, Poles, Czechs, and other past Soviet occupied countries think about a weak US and a strong Soviet Union ... uh ... I mean, Russia.
The anti-Russian sentiment (and anti-Obama, for that matter) in some of the comments here is appalling and completely ignorant.  To equate Obama with socialism is equally perverse and ignorant.  We invite economic and diplomatic conflict and perhaps real conflict with Russia (and others), if we continue to have the anti-Russia rhetoric of the past many years.  We need a new direction in dealing with foreign policy whether via Obama or someone else.  Yes, we need to be stern with any possible energy bullying of Europe (or us), but that doesn't mean being anti-Russia.  If and when the Russians put "radar sites" in Cuba or Venz., then we will see if what's good for the goose is good for the gander.
God is going to bless America, and elect Obama.
All

I guess the writers are all from Russia with love.  Don't you all love that movie?  As we may not care what they see or think about our election, it is also important to know the difference of preferences.  We, OBAMA/BIDEN folks this argument is necessary, reason why most of us are not posting any comments.

THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WE HAVE RIGHT NOW IS ECONOMY! WHO BROUGHT US DOWN TO WHERE WE ARE AT.  IF YOU ARE LIKE THOUSANDS OF US WHO LOST THEIR JOBS BECAUSE OF OUR ECONOMY, YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW WE THINK AND FEEL ABOUT THIS ELECTION.  YOU CAN BRING CHANGE TO OUR FUTURE? THOUGH EXPERIENCE MAYBE THE BIGGEST ISSUE TO SOME, IT IS THE COMMMITMENT OF SOMEONE IN THE PUBLIC OFFICE TO MAKE THE NECESSARY AND MOST NEEDED CHANGE THAT WE WOULD LIKE TO ELECT THIS NOVEMBER.  IF YOU ASK ME AS A WOMAN IF I AM PATRIOTIC JUST BECAUSE I DID NOT SERVE THE MILITARY?  YES, I AM.  IT IS A CHOICE THAT WE MAKE IN LIFE, A CHOICE THAT THE UNITED STATES OFFER TO ITS CITIZEN.  THERE ARE WAYS TO SERVE THIS GREAT NATION AND WE ARE NOT DIVIDED JUST BECAUSE WE ARE NOT IN THE ARMY.  PERHAPS THE ARMY THINKS SO, BUT WE ALL PAY OUR TAXES, DO OUR JOBS DILIGENTLY AND WE ARE ALL THE SAME IN THE EYES OF GOD.  NO LESS, NO MORE.... THIS GOES WELL TO ALL PEOPLE IN THE WORLD.
WE HAVE TO SET US AN EXAMPLE AND IT IS GETTING HARDER AND HARDER EVERYDAY TO BE ONE JUST BECAUSE WE LISTEN TO A LOT OF BS IN POLITICS AND BLOGS THAT ARE MISLEADING.  VOTE WISELY AND VOTE FOR THE ONE WHOM YOU REALLY BELIEVE WHO CAN LEAD US AND MAKE THE CHANGE IN OUR GOVERNMENT AND TO OUR PEOPLE.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

Bravo to those who stated that it proves we need McCain in office.  Shame on Russia for attacking Georgia and killing all those innocent people.  Murderers they are.  Now, as an American, I do not blame that on the Russian people, but if the Russian people don't keep their leaders in a harness and get them to stop invading innocent and peaceful countries, then yes, I would be anti-Russian.  For the most part, like Russia, Americans are finding it harder and harder to control their political leaders.  We both know that American and Russian leaders have their own agenda because all they want is CONTROL - control of everyone and everything.  IT IS UP TO THE COUNTRY'S PEOPLE TO STOP IT ALL!  If you think you can't do anything, then think again.  Get on the Internet and find a group that is growing against these control freaks and join.  UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL.  ALL COUNTRIES SHOULD BE FREE AND ABLE TO LET ITS PEOPLE DECIDE WHO THEY WANT AND DON'T WANT IN GOVERNMENT.
Bush policies have gutted this country, damaged our reputation across the world and put us in a war that we should not be in. Afganistan was correct, Iraq was wrong. Capitalism works great with some regulation. You remove all regulation and we now have the mess we see...

The biggest threat to this country long term is the national deficit. It currently stands at 9.6 trillion dollars. It was 5 Trillion when Bush got into office.
How do we pay for this? Cut taxes again? The truth is taxes have to go up and we need to cut spending. The math is simple.

The current neo-right wing Republicans want this election about God, Gays and Guns. Make it a cultural election, because their policies have failed spectacularly. Where are the real Republicans? Those that believed in the separation of church and state? It's the FIRST ammendment in the U.S. Constitution. These imposters are hurting our country in so many ways. Stop dividing this country on culture and start doing real work!

Warren Buffett (from Omaha, Nebraska) and one of the richest people in the world is voting for Obama. I wonder why?

Palin? What a joke. A hockey mom who scoffs at and makes fun of Harvard grads? Every single person here wishes their kids could get into Harvard!

Obama is the better candidate by far. He will inherit many problems, but at least he will try to do something about those problems. I don't agree with all of his policies, since I'm a Republican, but we do need a change.
There is a lot about Obama that we don't know about.  I think if he gets elected, it will be to late for all Americans.  The Russians will probably enjoy our choice.
Why is this relevant? We don't need input from Russia or Hollywood on who to vote for. The American public has been doing it without them for over 200 years and it has worked out just fine.
Russia should clean up there own act.
Great, add the Russian's to Obamas side.  Hamas, Al Quadia, the Syrians, Iran and now the Russians.  That settles it, I'm voting Obama.
McCain has the foreign policy experience. Obama wants to have tea and talk about it. Give me a break! Russia is supplying Iran and terrorists weapons to attack our troops in Iraq and Afghanastan. Obama needs to get his head out of his arse and wake up! This isn't Fantasy Island. This is the real world and real weapons/threats!
WOW...WAKE UP PPL. WHO THE HELL WOULD YOU PICK, IF ASK THE SAME ? ABOUT RUSSIA? I THINK THE ANSWER IS VERY CLEAR!!! U WOULDNT PICK PUTIN!!! Y WOULD THE AMERICAN PPL, AFTER 8YRS OF BUSH WANT ANOTHER REPUB. IN OFFICE?? OH I SEE,THEY WANT MORE AMERICANS TO DIE. MAYBE THE WORLD LOOKS AT OBAMA AS A "WEAK LEADER", FOR WHAT REASON I DONT KNOW. DO THE RIGHT THING AMERICAN, BEFOR MORE OF OUR OWN PPL. DIE, INSTEAD OF SPENDING TIME WITH THIER FAMILIES, THE SAME WAY WE DO EVERYDAY...MCCAIN WILL NOT LET THAT HAPPEN!! HE THINKS THE WORLD WILL BE A BETTER PLACE IF WE (AMERICA)SEND MORE OF OUR PPL OVER SEAS, TO TAKE WHAT WE WANT!! I THINKS THATS BEING A BULLY, WOW THATS THE SAME THING MCCAIN SAYS ABOUT RUSSIA! HOW CAN A BULLY CALL A BULLY A BULLY??
"If we were asked to pick between Putin and a moderate Russian candidate who the heck do you think most Americans would pick?"

Good point Tom.

We would definately choose the candidate who sought less government control and more freedoms for the Russian people.

We would choose the more McCain type candidate because they would go against the kinds of socialist/communist policies advocated by Putin and Obama.

Plus, it is not really the Russian citizen's fault that they are so misinformed on the issues, their media is even more one sided than ours.
Listen my fellow Americans. For those of you who don't think it matters how Russia or other countries view us, you are precisely the problem! That is why terrorist are itching to blow us off the map. WE cannot take on the roll of the world's police and not expect it to have an affect on how others view us, nor can we stick our heads in the sand as if the views of other countries don't matter. We are weaker now as a country under George W. McCain than we have ever been in history. We HAVE to let Russia do what it wants because our military might is stretched so thin at this point, I wonder why Russia hasn't just walked through our front door and put there feet on our coffee table. You have got to be crazy to think John Bush would change anything when he and his oily hench men are the reason we are in a recession and our currency means nothing in the world today. There won't be a United States of America at this rate! Another for years of this and we will be a third world country... we aren't too far from it now! Obama/Biden... for change and to live!!!
The Russians really dont want Obama, they want McCain they just know how easily Americans are manipulated.  With our fiancial economy in a melt down all we need is McCain to finsh off the tumble.  Go McCain Palin lets get this ball to rolling.
We need to gear our foreign policy towards diplomacy...not aggression. A candidate with an honest desire to employ diplomatic methods in opposition to unprompted aggression will perform far better. Obama has the favor of the majority of our European allies as well as countries we currently deem problematic. We should consider scaling back our policy of world policing...Obama will do that.
