Honor killings persist in 'man's world'

BABAKOT, Pakistan – In a tangle of bushes and trees outside a remote village in southwest Pakistan, six close male relatives of three teenage girls dug a 4-foot wide by 6-foot deep ditch, on a sweltering night in mid-July, and allegedly buried the girls alive.

The girls' crime: they dared to defy the will of their fathers and the customs of their tribe and choose their own husbands. The mother of one of the girls and the aunt of another were shot and killed while begging for the girls’ lives, according to local media reports.

A busy street in the village of Babakot, Pakistan.

The incident has touched off widespread condemnation from human rights groups, but also a sturdy defense from local officials. "This action was carried out according to tribal traditions," said Israrullah Zehri, a senator representing Balochistan in the upper house of Pakistan’s parliament in the capital Islamabad. "These are centuries-old traditions and I will continue to defend them," he said.

We visited the scene and interviewed locals to try and learn more about this gruesome crime.

Daring to defy tradition
Saarang Mastoi is the local journalist who broke the story. He told us that on July 14, Fatima, Fauzia and Jannat Bibi, aged 16 to 18, got into a taxi in Babakot, a small village of farmers and sheepherders in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, and drove about one hour to the village of Usta Mohammed to meet their boyfriends. The girls were chatting in the back of the taxi about their plans to meet the boys at the local restaurant and then go to a civil court to marry them.

The taxi driver dropped the girls off and then drove straight back to Babakot to inform their families about the secret plans he had overheard in the back of his taxi, according to Mastoi.

The girls’ decision to elope came after their male relatives and tribal elders had refused them permission to marry the boys of their choice because they were from another tribe.

The families of the girls belong to the wealthy feudal Umrani tribe in Balochistan. The uncle of one of the girls is a minister in the Balochistan provincial government and a deputy leader of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), according to an investigation into the incident by Human Rights Watch.

Traditional justice
Almost immediately after the taxi driver’s return, a posse of male relatives, including fathers, uncles and brothers, set out from Babakot for the village of Usta Mohammed to bring the girls home. The men arrived in land cruiser jeeps bearing Balochistan government license plates – one belonging to the district mayor, according to Human Rights Watch.

The girls were kicked, punched and then pushed into the vehicles at gunpoint, Mastoi, the journalist, said. Once back at home in Babakot, the girls were beaten again and interrogated by their fathers and uncles for almost one hour before their "verdict" was announced.

They would be killed – buried alive.

The girls were dragged into vehicles and taken to the end of a back road in Babakot accompanied by two female relatives, according to media reports. The men dug ditches and ordered the girls to be thrown in. When the female relatives saw the ditches, they tried to intervene and begged for the girls’ lives, according to local media reports.

There was "pandemonium at the site," according to the findings of the Asian Human Rights Commission, and a tribal elder gave orders to shoot the two older women. They died immediately and were thrown into the wide ditch. The three girls, who were wounded in the gunfire but still alive, were then thrown in and covered with sand and mud.

In Pakistan’s rural areas, male tribal councils decide the fate of women who bring dishonor to their family. In 2004, President Pervez Musharraf outlawed the practice, known as "honor killings" – violations of the law carry the death penalty. But the law is impossible to enforce because this centuries old custom for dealing with women is protected by powerful feudal landlords and tribal elders.

Mastoi, the local reporter, told NBC News that "powerful people" from the Umrani tribe had threatened him and warned him of consequences if he continued to report the story. He said that everyone in the village knew what happened and shortly after the murders, a couple of shepherds in the area had taken him to see the actual burial site. "Now everyone is too afraid to talk," he said.

‘It’s a man’s world’
Only about 7,000 people live in Babakot, a run down and dusty place about 200 miles south of the provincial capital, Quetta. Donkey carts carrying women, children and poor farmers give way on the road to the shiny 4X4 Land Cruisers of the wealthy landowners and tribal chiefs.

Ali Baksh, a frail shepherd with a thin scruffy white beard, has been tending his sheep in the neighboring district of Naseerabad since he was seven years old.  When asked what he thought about the murders in Babakot, he stared blankly for a few seconds and then he said, "I am proud of our Balouch traditions and it was the right punishment for those girls who defied the will of their fathers."

Public outcry by human rights groups and lawmakers has forced the federal government in Islamabad to open an investigation into what happened in Babakot six weeks ago.

An elderly woman in Babakot who said, “It’s a man’s world and these things will never stop."

But the Asian Human Rights Commission believes a full accounting of the events may be impossible: "The Balochistan police have removed three of the five bodies and started destroying any evidence that might prove useful to an eventual investigation."

Back in Babakot, the reaction of an elderly woman to questions about the story seemed to confirm the human rights groups' fears. When asked about the story, she refused to give her name, sighed and waved off any hope for justice in this case. "It’s a man’s world and these things will never stop," she said.

and these are our ALLIES? The male relatives of those girls should be tried for murder. I realize it is probably impossible to prove they did it, but I think all those male relatives should spend the rest of their lives in prison. "Local traditions" be damned. Multiculturalism and tolerance can only go so far.
This is evil in its overt form. The world through the U.N should go to the bottom of the incident; drag the perpetrators to the International Court of Justice, including the accomplices; the police, local leaders and the governemnt in power for not bringing the perpetrators to justice.
It sounds like the men are scared to death and resort to these measures as a means to overcome their own inadequacies.
This world will be a better place when people realize honor is something only they can earn for themselves and only lose through their own actions.  As far as I'm concerned, their "family honor" was shot down the tubes the moment they became a family that murdered its women.
Its funny how we seem to always put this stuff in the news as something new to read about. We have
"honor" killings in the U.S. on a daily basis done by boyfriends and husbands that are Americans and usually of the Christian faith. I think we need to focus on our own problems before we can fix problems in other countries.
A land of terrorist and murderers! What a great place!Gotta love the cave man mentality!
This is a government the US supports. Saudi Arabia, another of our allies, also violates human rights of women. This is not a "cultural" issue. WOmen are human and they are treated worse than dogs in these countries. We would not tolerate Apartheid, which was a "cultural" rpactice too. We had no problem telling SOuth Africa that we would not tolerate their exclusion of blacks. But when the situation involves women, it becomes "cultural". I guess we still have a long way to go as a society before crimes against women are treated with the same outrage as racial hate crimes.
I read this article to my class this morning.  Anyone else want to complain about living in the U.S.?
I bet over there they don't have to put up with Brittany Spears, Nichole Richie, and the likes of madonna.  More power to them..
Age old traditions and religions resist change, education and enlightenment as a means of self perpetuation.  It's easier to control and scare ignorant people than educated ones.  Unfortunately leaders the world over know this, including in the good old US of A.
This is the problem with ALL religions, they prevent the advancement in moral matters rooted in ancient times when people believed the world was flat. Barbarism defended as tradition. While this is an extreme one should examine the validity of their own beliefs and traditions while they read in disgust at this incident and others.
And the U.S. has sent over $5 billion in aide to this country?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/feb/27/pakistan.usa
Reading this story made me want to vomit.  It's hard to believe something like this happens in our "modern" world.  The question remains, what can we do about it?
What a sad and frightening commentary in that a society can be so repressed as to condone the killing of children and yet be advanced enough to have nuclear weapons.
And they call us barbarians? If this isn't reason enough to dismantle a government and a religious system I don't know what is. How could you even come to such a conclusion? It's beyond my understanding how family could so callously kill family. Do these people not understand the concept of love and respect?

They quite obviously don't understand the concept of honor, because this clearly is not it. Honor certainly isn't something so shallow and base as vanity and image. These are the immature actions of child-men whose arrogance superceeds all else.

I hope karma gives them what they deserve.
Hope to see education come to the masses of this region in order that a more informed public and government can see the error of this practice.
Thank God I was not born in Pakistan.  Words cannot describe the horror and disgust I feel for such barbarism.
This is another example of rational people from the west trying to deal with irrational people living in the 7th century.
They will not change and do not care what the western version of right and wrong is.
When you deal with animals you get bitten and thats the bottom line.
This story turns my stomach...  I know it's hard to effect meaningful change in a culture that has such deeply ingrained customs, but the Pakistani government needs to do SOMETHING to step in and put a stop to these kinds of barbaric acts, especially if they want to continue to play on the world stage.  Everyone is so busy vilifying China (and in most cases, rightfully so) but some attention needs to be put on this and pressure from Washington wouldn't hurt.
Ok, I am a Muslim and these acts do not represent Islam at all. These tribes that commit these horrific acts are all uneducated sheppards and have no sense of rational thinking. Once again, these acts are not condoned by the Islamic religion.
This is the problem with ALL religions, they prevent the advancement in moral matters rooted in ancient times when people believed the world was flat. Barbarism defended as tradition. While this is an extreme one should examine the validity of their own beliefs and traditions while they read in disgust at this incident and others
These are clear violations of human rites laws and are in fact crimes just as disturbing and sick as those committed by the Nazis in concentration camps. So I believe the world community should take strong actions towards governments that support or do little to stop crimes such as these that are committed in their borders. The barbaric customs of their past should not be a shield against punishment for these crimes committed to protect so called family honor.
Readers should understand that these "honor" killings are also taking place in Great Britain and the United States.  In order to remain politically correct, the media often leaves the Muslm connection out of the reports of missing or murdered young women who have disgraced their families.  When will we wake up to the fact that Islam's unofficial MFR (Most Favored Religion) status in the west is not multiculturalism at its best.  It is a recipe for societal suicide.
I am appalled and shocked,  human being can still carry such gruesome act in the name of their religion. Such hypocrisy. How come they are consumed in the "material" world and still practise the deep traditions.
God have mercy on them!
I think these men deserve the same fate.  How barbaric, I think the government of Pakistan should hunt these cowards down, and dig a hole to bury them alive!! eye for an eye.  and do it so ALL those men (?)in Pakistan KNOW that this kind of horror is not going to be tolerated. My lord, those countries are just pathetic!! How barbaric, just a bunch of insecure men. Blow them off the map!
For God's sake, this is the 21st century, what is the Govt of Pakistan doing to eradicate this so called honor killing?  Stringent measures must be taken to prevent other monstrosities from happening again.  Alas the ruling elite has power and is arrogant.  It's hard to imagine that the Patriarchal society is very much alive and well in this muslim nation.  Shame, shame.  Human Rights Commision should look into this and all parties should be held accountable.
The women in these backwards places need to get the heck out by any means possible!  Those men need to be de-capitated and gang-banged by a bunch of strong women!  There needs to be a complete overthrow of this horrific system of a male's "right" to murder a female family member.  Until these gutless males are physically overpowered and punished, this custom will continue!
Actually the US is pretty good at coming down hard on honor killings,   as is the UK and Canada,  however,  in Europe especially Germany(which has a large Muslim population)  the government seems to take a hands off attitude.   Let me ask all the men on this page,  could you in all honesty murder your own daughter.  I thought not,  these are our allies,   our lot is tied to them    What can we honestly due to bring people like this into the 21st century.    Please how about we just hunt down and kill Osama Bin Laden and get the hell out of this hell hole.
I know that once again everyone will try to blame Islam, that how backward religion it is. Infact all these traditions are not just against the the religion but infact the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) came to abolish these Arab traditions. Evident from these three fact clearly written in Koran:
(1)Islam give women to chose their husbands. (2)Colors are tribes in human race are only so that they can recognize each other and none superior or inferior to each other and (3) Killing an innocent (muslim or non-muslim) is equivalant to killing the humanity.
We have to realize that these people never had any education. They are miles away from any religion. More than 60% cannot write their own names in their own language. They are the vitim of the fudal system thank to the lagacy of British and now their successors. They do not need bombs and F-16s they need schools and hospitals. I wish our Government can understand that.
I think this story is unacceptable.  But, you have to remember that they do not have the same type of justice system as we do in the USA.  I think the UN and World Justice System should step in, but I agree that we should fix our own "honor killings" in the USA before we try and interfer in another country.  They don't have our views and they don't care.  They do things their way just like we do things our way.  We can't make them be like us, they don't think it's wrong.  Cultures are different, that doesn't make them right, but we can't compare our culture to theirs.  It's comparing oranges and apples.  Sorry, but it's true.
Centuries old traditions my foot.  These men are cowards.  They have no ability to actually care about their daughters, no way to really be emotionally involved with them.  They are barbarians who only consider their women to be chattel and how dare they say 'No' to the men.  This is a crime against women, and a crime against God. God gave them life, souls, and only God has the right to take those lives.  These men in this village are no better than the medival men who considered women to have no souls, and thought they were animals.  Anyone who upholds these 'traditions' are no better than the murderers themselves.  I hope they are brought to justice.  I wouldn't want to be them when their final judgement day comes.
That is why America is what it is, A Bless Country by God. This should not go unpunished. I hope the Asian Human Rights can do something to set an example. These poor girl only wanted to get married and live happily ever after. What they did is barbarian, done and allowed by their own family members. These poor souls don't know who God is or what he stands for. These humans don't know what love is. God represents love, compassion, understanding and tolerate each other, "not these atrocities".  God Bless America, in the name of his son, Jesus Crist Amen.
More women commit suicides in these regions than anywhere else in the world.  Thank God I live in the US
Wow, Mr. Daniel from Chicago - clearly you were raised in a dusty tent somewhere, too, didn't you?  Perhaps we should start bringing more "honor" killings to the US, so we can avoid the horror of having to deal with these culture destroying pop starlets!  I worry for any female in your vacinity.
These "Honor Killings" are actually murder. There is no religion involved here, just a bunch of very backward tribal groups. Although we have seen and heard of these "Honor Killings" in America and in other Democracies around the World. Who ever the parties are that commit these crimes are caught, punishment must be immediate and most severe. I believe it was just a short time ago that one of the Pakistan or Afghanistan Legislators actually stood up in the House of Parliment and tried to defend these actions. Of course we can all sit quite comfortably here in our protected environment and make posts to different Blogs about our umbrage at these actions. Loks great, and the outrage expressed is very vehement in the Sincere disgust about such practices. Only when we collectively understand that, there is little we can do about it, will we then try to find other venues where actions can be made that could be constructive. Maybe some old time Frontier Justice would be just the ticket. I'm sure there are probably some groups that are not well known that are trying to make a difference. Lets try to locate those Groups and see what we can do to help.
This MUST STOP NOW!This is a direct violation of HUMAN RIGHTS.No one have a right to kill.
many years ago i dated a beutifull pakistan girl-HOT-
the minute her parents found out they beat her and sent her back to pakastan.i often wonder if she lived and what kind of life she woud have had here as to there.i oray she got away before the same happened to her.
OK.. and you say there is a "JUST GOD".  this sure proved it......
This is murder, but beware christians! This behavior is typical of old/new testament followers, and the Koran isnt much different from the old/new testament or torah.  So the next time some fundamentalist christian says the bible is the word of god to be followed literally - BE VERY AFRAID!
I don`t understand how the woman havent revolted againsed the men- create a union take the children and leave all the men- lets see how they do without woman cause we do all the real work!!!
We're fools in the West to think that by forming alliances with these countries we're making a dent in their psyche - females are only chattels and have no rights.  What's worse is they attempt to practise their form of justice when they emigrate to the West -just recently a Pakistani in Toronto killed his 16 year old daughter for not wearing the hijab!

So much for the rights of the individuals and tolerance in a multicultural society in Canada.
This entire story is evidence to the fact civilization is not as evolved as we would like to think. It makes real the pettiness of people of the United States parsing our leaders words to advance the political agenda of the hour. Honor, Duty, Country is the meaning of our freedom. The men that perpetrated this crime against humanity will be dealt with.

Texas Vet
OK...and what about the males who cheat? Who 'dishonor' the family?  There has been only ONE man walk on water.  When did these "men" feel they can do the same thing?  We are ALL made in the image and likenss of GOD, and that includes females....
these "men" are a bunch of goat-lovers who are afraid of the power of female sexuality.
ever since men discovered their role in the procreative process, the goddess and females in general have been on the run.
our christian civilization in Europe and America engaged in "honor killings" of women who they deemed as witches who were actually herbal healers and midwives-by the thousands.
also, our State allows abortion,so we don't have too much room to preach.
First Ladies and Gents.  Let's  not make the mistake of judgment here.  They are not following any Islamic law to commit such heinous acts.  If you read into the article, these are traditions that these tribes hold.  Islam does not allow such an act to be commited.  I hate when people get the misconception that Islam is so barbaric.  I don't know that there is much that can be done.  It is an outrage, but what can we do to  eliminate these killings?  First of all the men should have some compasion to love their daughters and to teach them if they do not agree with what their daughters have done.  Any A$$ can punish, It takes a true man to be a good father.
Heartbreaking, May those women rest in peace.
Of course I am horrified at this... being raised by a divorced, christian mother who never needed a man to complete her I cannot fathom not having the freedom to choose any aspect of my life.  It's disgusting what is allowed in this world.  Hey Dubya have you forgotten you have two daughters too????
Mr (?) Daniel from Chicago,  what do Britney, etal have to do with ANY of this?  How do you even begin to compare a silly hollywood life to the horrors those women in Pakistan deal with? Your comment makes no sence, and is almost incredibly uncaring and totally uneducated of the women/people in the third world countries and what they endure. Sir, you really need to THINK about the story you just read.  It is horrendous. Those little starlets have NOTHING to do with this, just not even remoteley.  Use your brain, THINK, those cowardly men in Pakistan are monsters, they are the lowest form of humanity on earth.
I can't fathom living like that  We are so blessed to live in the USA.  Everyone should have the the right to choose their mate.  They treat the women like animals where they have no choice who they bred with. Maybe one day things will change but not in my lifetime.
I commend you for placing this on a very mainstream site.  I have known about honor killings for quite some time but this issue has not been given the coverage it deserves. I actually had a man doubt me when I spoke of this unacceptable "tradition".  The more the world knows about these shameful acts, by fathers often, the sooner we can put an end to the ownership of our sisters worldwide.
