Pakistanis worry about Zardari rule

Asif Ali Zardari, widower of slain former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and now the leader of her party, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), is set to win a five-year term as president of Pakistan on Saturday.

The two other candidates from rival parties have been unable to seriously challenge him because the PPP enjoys a comfortable majority of seats in the national assembly and in three of the four provincial assemblies – these groups will choose, by secret ballot, a successor to President Pervez Musharraf, who resigned from office last month.

The election comes as Pakistan is reeling from an economy in chaos, crippling power outages, an Islamic insurgency moving out of the lawless border areas into the cities, and public outcry over Musharraf’s sacking of judges who opposed him.

Balance of powers
Zardari's critics insist he has ascended to power only because of the death of his wife and has neither the governing skills nor the experience to pull the country out of its present crisis. His supporters strongly disagree, insisting he is the best man to bring peace and stability to Pakistan because of the powers he will inherit from the military regime of President Musharraf and his role as leader of the governing PPP party.

Armed with such sweeping powers, Zardari would become one of the most powerful civilian presidents in Pakistan's history. He would  have the authority to dismiss the government, sack the army and intelligence chiefs, appoint judges and control Pakistan’s nukes. But he insists he wants to devolve the powers of the presidency and return Pakistan to a parliamentary system of government after nine years of military dictatorship.

"If I am elected president," he wrote in anopinion piece in the Washington Post, "one of my highest priorities will be to support the prime minister, the National Assembly and the Senate to amend the constitution to bring back into balance the powers of the presidency and thereby reduce its ability to bring down democratic governance."

Three of the judges that Musharraf deposed were re-appointed to their old jobs today. But the PPP-led government did not restore the deposed chief justice, Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry, deepening a rift with Zardari’s political opponents.

Throughout Pakistan's history, power has always been concentrated in one man. Many Pakistanis worry that the country is just changing from a military dictatorship to a civilian one.

Pakistan's Information Minister Sherry Rehman said Zardari believes in the balance of power between the president and the prime minister.

"Mr Zardari is a political figure who has stakes in the stability of the system," she said. "The decade of manipulation of the Presidency has tilted the balance of power away from parliamentary forces. The system could only be corrected by individuals and institutions that have respect for the will of the people."

Dogged by his past
If Saturday's vote for the presidency was a popular ballot, rather than a vote in the assemblies, Zardari likely would have a tougher time securing the country's top job. He lacks credibility among many Pakistanis and is dogged by his past -- alleged corruption and money laundering charges amounting to millions of dollars in kickbacks from foreign companies during his wife’s two terms in office, and for which he spent a total of 11 years  in prison.

Widely known as "Mr. 10 percent" for alleged skimming of government contracts, Zardari at one time faced charges in Pakistan, the U.K. and Switzerland. He maintains the charges were all politically motivated and never proven.

All charges against Zardari and Bhutto were dropped last year as part of a U.S.-brokered deal with President Musharraf, which paved the way for Benazir Bhutto to return to Pakistan from self-imposed exile. That amnesty, known as the National Reconciliation Ordinance, is controversial and unpopular in Pakistan and allegedly the reason Zardari has gone back on his promise to restore the independent-minded judges. The restoration of the deposed chief justice would likely see the case against Zardari brought up again and the amnesty thrown out.

Zardari refuses to answer questions from political opponents who wonder how he acquired his vast fortunes given that he does not come from great wealth. Last week, London’s Financial Times newspaper reported that Zardari had presented medical certificates to the English High Court as recently as last year stating he was suffering from severe psychiatric problems, including dementia. It is widely held that these medical statements were falsified to postpone Zardari’s cases before the courts. If this were to be true, then he would have committed perjury.

"We cannot trust a President who is a liar and who does not honor his promises. Before he was Mr. 10 percent. Now he will become Mr. 100 percent and, who knows, next he may sell the country," said Muhammed Iqbal Tanoli, an Islamabad lawyer who took part yesterday in a sit-in by the country's lawyers in front of the parliament demanding Zardari restore the judiciary.

How can a person become president who does not fulfill his promises nor stand by his agreements?" asked Saqib Abbasi, a student leader at Islamabad College for Boys. Students and the civil society have joined the nationwide lawyers movement protesting the delay in restoring the deposed judges.

Ayaz Amir, a political analyst, said much more than Zardari’s personal credibility is at stake in Saturday’s vote. "Mr. Asif Ali Zardari will have to play a very balanced role to ensure political stability. Failure to do so will be a disaster for the whole system," he said.

'Zardari has a shot'
Despite this concerns, today's lead article in the English language daily, The Nation, argues that Zardari has a shot at becoming a legitimate leader: "Mr. Zardari's obvious handicap could also prove a window of opportunity for him. He can simply turn this into his biggest advantage by confounding his critics."

Pakistanis will now be watching Zardari's relations with the country’s powerful army.

"Mr. Zardari will have to establish a close relationship with the army and win its trust," said Najam Sethi, editor of Pakistan’s English language newspaper the Daily Times. "Whether he will be an effective president remains to be seen."

Zardari seems to have convinced the U.S. government that he will cooperate more fully than President Musharraf in going after Islamic militants. So far, Zardari's party has alternated between peace deals with the militants and highly unpopular military operations -- the majority of Pakistanis still view the war on terror as America's war.

He has promised the parliamentarians from the militant-infested border areas and the North West Frontier province to initiate a political process to deal with the insurgency. They will hold him to his word. Once he assumes the presidency, however, Washington will be demanding action and not peace deals.

Zardari may claim to have demensia for purpose on postponing his trial but the people of Pakistan have a bigger problem with the desease. How quickly they forget what the Bhuttos and the Sharifs had done to the country. The ruled Pakistan like it ws their God given domain. If the spineless media in Pakistan grows some guts and exposes (with validity) all that these clowns have done and how they have accumulated their wealth and if the not to innocent (and equally if not more) corrupt judiciary would take up cases against these power mongers, then Pakistan may stand a chance to survive. Untill then I see no hope of Pakistan becoming anything more than what it is today-A MISERABLY FAILED STATE(if you choose to call it so).
I find it hilarious that the West proclaimed Butto as a savior of Democracy yet after her death her 19 year old son took over as lead of her PPP party.

Pakistan recycles its leaders but then expects a new result.  Nothing will change in 5 years the military will overthrow another corrupt leader... oh wait he is already facing corruption charges.
Until we have droves of Western educated Pakistanis migrating back to better the nation nothing will change.  Pakistan continues to recycle a hand full of the same Western educated elite politicians but expects a different result.  As an Pakistani American it is up to my generation to help break this cycle.

Bhutto's PPP is a democracy?  How did her 19 year old son living in the West become part of the party heads?

My hats of to Indians on how they have build their economy.
Its not a day of happiness for Zardari to be the President of Pakistan. He has a great responsibility on his shoulders to clean up his acts of shame of the past in the coming years to earn trust of everyone. He can earn wealth in trillions of dollars, if people of Pakistan and Army do not trust him and like him, then he should change his name to be called as Mr. Nobody. This is a tough time for Pakistan and its people and only our prayers to Allah will give us relief from Zardari and his party.
pakistan is reaping for what it has done. Lack of clear thinking, harboring militancy, trying to ruin other countries. now with zardari, pakistan will definitely become a failed state. I really do feel pity on these guys.
lets give Zardari a chance to show what he can do,
so far he has broken all the promises,He is elected
because Mushraf made the deal with the devil. It looks like all the politicians should be hanged for
allowing a corrupt and known fellon to hold the highest position in the country, including the Mullahs
If there is a another coup,I hope they flush them all
down the toilet.
Whatever the case is he is constitutional president and democratic president is better than a dictator... He has to face numerous challenges to prove his eligibility including terrorism, militancy, economy, political instability and he himself has to remain alive to perform duties in order to bring betterment.. he himself has shifted to PM house due to fears of attacks..
All the comments on this page come from comfortably middle class, elite Punjabi and Urdu-speaking Pakistanis. These comprise just 2% of the 160 million population. Apparently the Jagirdars and their poor hari supporters don't agree since he got 0ver 70% of the vote.

If Zardari was corrupt why wasn't he convicted even after seven years behind bars. The worst financial crime doesn't carry that high of a penalty. Fact is, every Pakistani is corrupt, whether cheating in academic exams, supporting dictators, acting racist toward other ethnicities  and religions or selling counterfeit items. We're all guilty and deserve the leadership we get.
You people should be excited that a dictator in the pocket of Bush is out of power and something so great as a link to Benazir Bhutto is now going to lead Pakistan into a bright future absent of blood shed.  Reconciliation for a greeat country.
My Paki Muslim brothers and sisters, it is ramadan so plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz all pray sincerely to Allah to give peace and prosperity to the Muslims and give right guidance to all the Muslims, especially its leaders. Prayer is the only thing we can do now.
I am from the Indian side of Kashmir, and Zardari's sudden rise to presidency came as a shock to me. In our neighbourhood, there is now a rogue-state headed by a head-less mad-man threatening the peace in the whole region. Dynasty politics was excusable but the credentials of a demented crook do not assure anything at all. God knows what the relationship with India may turn out but if we go by the apprehensions and expectation, then every Indian should now onwards start living in steel-boxes;who knows under a sudden whim of mind(lessness), Zardari sahib pours missiles on us soon one day!
Just in time for the war on the Taliban to pick up and Iraq to fade away.  Peace and an end to this horrible war will be earned soon.
wow ...i still cant believe it has actually materialized..he's got some luck though which he's gonna need and then some to tackle what he's getting into...its mind boggling how someone with his rep can actually ascend to the presidency...well i tell u what folks ...that sheer magnitude and the scale of problems that that country has maybe it will take a crook to fix em up after all ...he's got nothing to lose ..the whole world hates him anyways ...i hope he just has an epiphany and wakes up tomorrow determined to lower the boom at all thats wrong there ...i know its wishful thinking but lets face it people the ball is in his court ...lets hope he knows how to play tennis ...its saddening to witness a day like this when the most unqualified get rewarded for the bounties from ignorants
What a Choice by the people of Pakistan.I guess this is what they call democracy.Wah wah When Bush can be president of America I guess Zardari can be mr 100%.
i feel shocked at the law makers( who in reality are all corrupt, selfish, gangsters and mafia cream)of pakistan to vote and elect for a person who happens to be a notorious plunderer of pakistan.i am sure this is the end of pakistan.bhutto split this country into two and now zardari will finish it off.take my word.
VERY DISAPPOINTING.  SEEMS LIKE PAKISTAN NOR PAKISTANIS WILL EVER GET A BREAK FROM CORRUPTION, THEFT, CONSPIRACY AND SELF DESTRUCTION.

PAKISTAN DESERVES BETTER.  THE PEOPLE  NEED EDUCATION.

WHAT A SHAME
The only possibility which Pakistanis can hope and pray for is the realization that Zardari gets that the only way he can survive in the leadership role he has got into by the void created by his wife Bhutto,
and also to wash his past corruption as Mr. 10%, is
to cut out corruption with an iron hand he now has, and to do all that is within his power to bring order to Pakistan, by constructive use his sharp mind and good skills for the benefit of Pakistan instead of destructively using to benefit himself, in this great opportunity he has got to come out as a clean leader.
Zardari can go to hell. He is going to take pakistan with him. The people of pakistan deserve it because they do nothing and let this happen. The media should be ashamed of themselves for not showing people the real face of zardari to the nation who has forgotten the crimes done by this man. He assasinated Benazir bhutto without which he could have never come to power. He was a no body as long as she was alive.
Zardari is my hero
Zardari is the worst choice for Pakistan at this time. The people of pakistan deserve such a horrible person as their president because they do nothing and let this happen. The media should be ashamed of themselves for not showing people the real face of Zardari to the nation who has forgotten the crimes done by this man. He assasinated Benazir bhutto without which he could have never come to power. He was a no body as long as she was alive. Now the people of Pakistan will pay by the so called peoples party. What Pakistan needs is a revolution, and there is no one at this time who can start it. 61 years and this is what becomes of a country who deserve better than this. All the sacrifices that people made over the years for this country mean nothing now. Is there any hope? I think not!
its a shame for all us seeing him as a president, after killing his wife HE is the hero now!! just look at his glooming face in news. criminal!i hope pakistan survives. its a shame to tell someone  that u r from pakistan .
Its a major development which was quite eminent. I think, one should give a chance to president zardari after all people in pakistan know more then outside. The army is always there if any mishappening occurs to take care temporarily.

A man who was a trouble maker student in Cadet College Petaro, Petaro, Sindh, will be Pakistan's next President what a shame for us. An un-educated man who I believed never been a College Graduate will Govern a Nuclear-Power country I think this is a Tragedy for Pakistan and with Pakistanis.
No doubt - Zardari is a croked fellow. He has multple traps in the road ahead. Support of USA, which helped him to grab power - As he secured the gole ( throne of Pakistan ), he can denounce USA easily. Even though he get money from USA , he might falsify USA in anti - terrism war. He has to work hand in hand with religous hard liners in Pakistan for his survival. That will create a full blown terrism network in the world. Pakistanies are all around the world not like Afghnistan. Never ever Zardari will reduce the power of President. He will be next Dictator. Instead of Mushrif, Zarafi does not have proper education and vison for Pakistan. Neighbouring India can expect more trouble from Pakistan, to cover up the internal issues in Pakistan.  I feel so sorry for common man in Pakistan and those who struggle in Middle East for their loved ones betterment. Such a person might have even involved in the death of his own wife for his easy entry in Pakistan politics. May Allaha bless Pakistan.
This is the guy who attached a bomb to the legs of a bussiness man to snatch millions. May God Bless and Save People of Pakistan. Today we should declare Black Day of Pakistan.
Back in 1991, I won Cambridge commonwealth Scholarship from Pakistan to complete my Doctorate (PhD) Degree at Cambridge University.

Zardari had taken charge for Pakistan's overseas Investments at that time. Within few months joining my PhD program at Cambridge University, I was notified by Pakistan's Embassy in London that I have to go back and abandoned my studies – Scholarship funds have been abolished. Zardari was behind all this corruption. I packed up my bags and returned Pakistan with sadness all over me. Several others (7) were affected as well.

Almost 17 years have passed – I have nothing but hate for this person. Not because Zardari is dishonest and corrupt individually but because he is selfish to an extent where he WILL NOT spare anyone in this country to gain personal interests. At this point where he has been chosen as the President of the nation – I wish to close my eyes like a rabbit and wait for the wolf to eat me …..
Congratulations to President elect Zardari. His wife died a brutal death under the watch of Musharaf. I hope that he has a vision for Pakistani people especially the rural people wo have no political connections. Let us not be too quick to judge this guy. He is destined to transform the country as long as keeps his conscience clear.
I believe what is going on in Pakistan is transitory kind if move. Let us join hands and pray for the best future of this nuke country, its stability will mean alot on middle east and world unrest, our hands crossed.
An hypo-crate, master of feudalism, one "Real politician" Mr. Asif zardari that is how we have seen him in the last couple of months. He leading the PPP Government in Pakistan has completely failed in fulfilling the commitments of his party charter. One of the worst inflation is prevailing in Pakistan, the hand to mouth nation is even deprived of protesting against the "over whelming" attitudes of government party. The country's entire political department is filled with culprits and corrupted faces. No neutral, educated and reformer minded person is likely to be available. Its an absolutely chaos situation that leads to bitter social conditions in Pakistan.. Being little optimistic would only be a little less pessimistic. The sufferings of billions are sounded like blowing wind yet no one is there to even bother about that.. The 800 million rupees is being spend on above 500 members of National Assembly annualy. Why the people who had already enough for several generation are getting government quotas and why not these so called elected assembly members donate all of their luxuries back to the people from whom they are taking? The better is yet to come for the nation and worst is still to bear more....
this man deserves to stay where he was i.e. JAIL. A man who was called MR. 10 percent during his wife's govt is now the President and soon he will be MR. 90 percent. Such a crook he was, he looted the country when he was not in power, why will he spare the country now. I feel so sad for Pakistan and i am so mad at those who let him in. I am no longer living in Pakistan and my friends tell me i did the right thing by leaving Pakistan...! This is what a common man thinks.
Hey,
The world will watching every step he takes. He knows that he is being monitored with great suspicion by everyone around him, the local media and his enemies. Lets see if we can live up to the expectation of being crooked to the core or a changed person ?

He has taken over over the legacy of the Bhutto name and Pakistani's have elected him and the party he has inherited after Benazir's death.

I think he should be given a chance. He knows that there is a ruthless army who would throw him out of the palace if he takes a couple of mis-steps.

Contrary to the belief but post Musharraf Pakistan is very liberal and with a open and fee media. This media which was allowed to thrive under Musharraf became very ruthless even to Musharraf. With  38 local television channels pouncing on every controversial move he made. They destroyed Musharraf and they will do the same to  President Zardari.

This media will be listening and monitoring every move he makes. I will watching him very very closely ! I have a blog to write !
Lets watch the show !
Moid Ansari
people of pakistan is to balme here not mr 10 percent.
he is going to sell pakistan as soon as he becomes president .may Allah save pakistan from this evil man
For me Asif Zardari.. is a master planner who has reached his destination from prison to president chair. I believe he is the one behind everything happened in past few months. Now for sure he is gonna ruin the nation !
I am amazed, how much all of you care for Pakistan. Most of you live abroad and u know nothing about whats going on here. You liked Musharaf's face so u ignored his mistakes, you don't like Zardari's face so ur reminding all his cases.  People of Pakistan has elected PPP (yes they did mistake) but they have done it. No one has right to criticize unless they bloody go and vote. When there is election, ppl like you sleep at home and don't go and vote because you ppl dont like to stand there and wait for your turn to come to polling. So if you ppl dont vote, why do you bloody criticize when party like ppp wins ? and now when ppp is in govt. They have right to choose their president according to the bloody constitution of 1973. So take it easy, next time go and vote instead of seating in a drawing room and watching geo tv.
Pakistan is not suffering because of politicians, its facing problem because of elite class , who stay in USA, CANADA, UK, Saudi etc and they criticise everything from there. They pretend to love the country and start talking about it and praying for it, but they never ever want to come and live here. And do something for the country. When people will start thinking in a positive way instead of celebrating the problems, everything will be good and we will have a good leader. We don't even vote while pretending that, there will be rigging in election and then we talk criticise our politicians ? We are responsible for everything. And We will be the one to take Pakistan on track. Since 1947 world has tried to desablize the country but they have failed and We the youth will never let that happen. No matter who leads the country, no matter what problem we have. Nothing will happen. We are believers and we will take Pakistan out of all dangers. Long live Pakistan.

Message:  Change yourself and do something good, others are doing bad, because you are not doing any good. So think of your self instead of criticizing others.
The problem with Pakistani's is thet they can't agree to anything. Every body sings their own song. There is so much hate amongst themselves that its sad. As much as I disaprove Zardari to be the President of Pakistan, I wish him good luck and may Allah give him wisdom to lead this country with a clean heart and clear consciences regardless of his past. Only Allah can forgive him for what he has done so let him be the judge of that. Is that not what every body's religion says. Come on people look at us, are we diong any thing for Pakistan? Yeah!!! bloging realy helps.
What a shame! Now corruption and theft will be legitimized. And I think the country will be governed by thefter and murderer. How God help Pakistan.
What a shame! Now corruption and theft will be legitimized. And I think the country will be governed by thefter and murderer. How God help Pakistan.
I strongly believe Musharaf was the best in Pakistans political history but he also became the victim of political vinem that runs in Pakistans Bureaucracy. Zardi is the biggest THUG of all time. He is a shame for Pakistan. I feel sorry for all Pakistanis. My God Bless my country and Keep it safe. I wish Musharaf had banned both losers (Zardari & Nawaz) from getting back to our PAK Sar Zameen but yeah its true we get what we deserve. People of Pakistan U DESERVE HIM...thoug there was no other choices but again believe me Pakistan was better off with Musharaf. I turst Pakistan ARMY more than loser civil politicians.
Come on folks, he is a result of a democratically elected House and by a majority Party brought into power by same people who were affected by his 10% to 20% rule just couple of years ago.  Heah! we elected Bush twice in the office, who are we to complain.
My friend we have not fogotten or friend Pakistan, we are wondering where your alligences lie, with the USA or Taliban-yes, the United States has made so many mistakes and has innocent blood on its hands. I can only say new leadership is coming to our land- hopefully Obama or MCcain will talke a new direction-BUSH has placed Patraues as head of CENTCOM, to lock our new President in the old direction of evilness-hoipefully this will not stand-God Bless Beautiful Pakistan!
I shed tears and cried for Pakistan when I heard Zardari was president. Pakistan is Doomed.
Only Allah can do a miracle and save Pakistan.
Let us all pray for Pakistan in this Ramadaan. What a nice country it used to be. Tsk. Tsk.
you guys have proved that you are fool because look at your comments, are they look like common or are they look like that a foolish, uneducated and silly person is giving all the comments.Let me tell you that pakistan is a soveriegn country and its people know that whom they want to lead them.Mr.president zardari is the best president of Pakistan.Let me answer you if say that he corrupt then why he is acquitted from money laundering case.Because he is innocent and you western have acpuitted him and now you are blaming him.

Pakistan is the only nation which have identity as the peaceful nation because its people have unity amongst themselves. Now,you are shocked that how can i say that pakistan is peaceful nation when there is terorist in its northern areas. That people are not the terorists, but they are victims of U.S.A.When nato fired missile on their homes and kills their family parents, children and their beloved relatives, will they not fight against nato.Actually i think America is the cruel nation because why did it attack iraq when they knew that iraq was not involved in 9/11.
zardari is the best.
don't just criticise him that much that if he wants to do something good he gets worried about the comments and stops.give him good wishes.
zardari is very smart man,he killed benazir bhutto brother&is responsible benazirs death to take over ppp leadership.he planed her death most paki agree.
AT LAST HE CAME THE MESIAH THE MOST CORRUPT PRESIDENT OF THE MOST CORRUPT COUNTRY OF THE WORLD. IT STARTED WITH PRESIDENT AYUB KHAN WHEN HE FIRED NINE ICS OFFICERS ,THEN Z.BHUTTO INVENTED THE QUOTA SYSTEM AS A BACK DOOR TO PUT ALL MORANS FROM SINDH INTO MEDICAL AND ENGINEERING COLLEGES AND OTHER GOVERMENT DEPARTMENTS, THAT GENERATION IS NOW RULING PAKISTAN.
Not sure in the long run it matters who runs Pakistan now.  The Taliban more than likely will eventually overthrow the gov't there; probably with the support of the ISI.

Then the US will probably have drop a hundred nukes or so on Pakistan to make sure Osama doesn't get Pakistan's nukes to use on us.
May God help Pakistan that now Mr. Zardari is the President.  It is very painful for me to see my old country in the hands of this crook.

Mushharf's mistake was to feel that he was the only one who could lead Pakistan into future.  Instead he should have tried to create the enironment for democracy and the new leader to take charge after his tenure.
