Three months on, unanswered questions for quake parents

SICHUAN, China – It is easy to be seduced by the glitz of the new Beijing, the modern face and the charm offensive turned on for the Olympic Games. But travel 1,300 miles south west of Beijing, and a tragedy is being played out that shows how little some things have changed.

A week before the Olympics opened I travelled to Sichuan province with a Nightly News team, to revisit parents who had lost a child in the May 12 earthquake. It was my third visit there since the quake, which killed 70,000 people.

VIDEO: Parents of quake victims still in shock

It was the deaths of so many children, an estimated 10,000 of them buried under the rubble of their schools, that had triggered scenes of raw grief in the days that followed, as devastated parents searched for their missing child. Their anguish so acute because for most this was the only child they were allowed under China's one child policy.

In the weeks that followed, anguish turned to anger, as parents demanded to know whether shoddy construction was to blame for the collapse of 7,000 classrooms. As I discovered this month, they are still waiting for answers.

As soon as we arrived in Mianzhu we were surrounded by police, demanding to see our documents. "The story's over," they told us, before ordering us to leave, escorting us out past the Fuxian No. 2 Primary School, where 127 children died. The police had sealed the school entrances with ugly gray walls, and painted slogans beside the gate – "Be grateful to the Communist Party."

The story isn't over, though the authorities clearly wish it were; and gratitude towards the communist party is not something widely shared among parents, whom the authorities are now trying to silence - urging them to put the quake behind them and move on.

‘They disappeared in one moment’
When we first visited Fuxian school soon after the quake, parents had turned the rubble into a shrine covered with scores of photographs of the children. The police have ordered the photographs removed and, as with schools across the quake zone, the authorities were clearing the debris - and with it, parents feared, any evidence of possible shoddy construction.

It was at Fuxian school that we'd first met Sang Min, standing in silent grief, cradling a photograph of her eleven year old son Feng Junwei, who died under the wreckage of his school. She still keeps his photographs close to her.

"Every time when I miss him, I take his photograph out and talk to him. I know he can't hear, but it makes me feel better," she told me during our most recent visit.

Also at Fuxian, we'd met Yuan Changhui, whose 12-year-old daughter also died. She'd dreamed of being a doctor.

"It took us so many years to bring up our children," she told me. "They disappeared in one moment."

Sign here…
Yuan Changhua also lost her husband, a mineworker, who was buried underground when the mine collapsed during the quake.

The authorities have offered parents compensation - 60,000 Yuan, which is almost $9,000, a lot of money here, but there's a catch: they have to sign an agreement not to protest.

We saw a copy. It reads: "From now on, under the leadership of the party and the government, we will obey the law and maintain social order."

It goes on: "We sincerely appreciate the help and care from the party, government and party."

Both Sang Min and Yuan Changhui have signed. They felt they had no choice.

"They said we had to sign it," Yuan Changhui told me. "What else could we do." Shaking her head, and wiping away tears she said it was "impossible" parents would ever learn the truth about the schools.

At the same time, the authorities have moved to silence local bloggers, who have catalogued the damage to schools, and suggested local corruption may have resulted in corners being cut on construction. One, a school caretaker named Liu Shaokun, travelled the region posting photographs of collapsed schools. He has been arrested and sentenced to one year re-education through labor.

"He's just a volunteer in the quake zone. How much influence does he have?" his wife told me.

Closure
The government has told parents they are allowed to have another child, though most we spoke to said it was much too early to decide.

The last we saw of Sang Min, she was boarding a train from Sichuan for a factory job in southern China. She could no longer wait for answers, and needed an income. The shock that turned to anger had now given way to exhaustion and emptiness.

It's unlikely, though, that the closure officials are demanding of parents will come by government edict.

On Tuesday - the three-month anniversary of the quake - all eyes were on the incredible spectacle of the Beijing Olympics, a world away from the grieving parents of Sichuan.

As for me and my entire household, we pledged not to do business with China anymore. Meaning that, if it does not say made in the USA we will not purchase it. And this pledge will stand the same for products that come from other countries that only want our money to go back to them, so that they can in turn turn around and use it against us and sometimes their own people who cannot defend themselves. Enough is Enough!
After reading about the tragedy in China I can relate on certain level with life on the MS coast after Katrina. I was no longer an American citizen. I was a "victim",refugee or whatever . People here lost families, homes, businesses and many left. Many of the elderly died in the months that followed.I am a nurse. I can not began to describe the smells, trash build up,and the  burning (the red sky at night). I pray for the victims and survivors of the tragedy in China as I do  for Americans all over this country that suffered lost through flood,tornadoes.etc. The thing which helped me during the post Katrina year were the Churches, doctors, nurses, and volunteers. These people left their homes and came to help. I can never say enough times THANK YOU,THANK YOU,THANK YOU for giving  your time and love to me.I will comment on some of the comments made which combined God and   politics..I do agree we(Americans) should take care of our children and elderly .I do not agree that this is the place to make political statements.I have seen enough hate campaign messages . My philosopy has always been bad things happen ,being a christian does not exempt you.
There are no words to describe what these parents are feeling!  We need to remember that there is always goverment cover-up no matter what country you're talking about.  Yes, comparing it to Katrina is like apples and oranges because these children had no chance of survival if the buildings were a danger zone to begin with.  Katrina victims were given ample time to leave the area, and they chose not too. This story has been forgotten and I thank you for bringing it out of the shadow of the Olympics.  Let's keep these parents and families in our prayers.
WARNING: This message is somewhat off on-topic.

People on this site need to wake-up.  New Orleans is not "still" suffering.  China's earthquake and Katrina are not alike in any way.  The US government did offer support and aid BEFORE the hurricane hit, but the arrogant governor of Louisiana denied the help.  The US government has done far beyond what should have ever been expected.  Stop being a "bleeding heart" for Katrina.  There are no "victims"; there are only stubborn people that would not leave the hurricane's path (they were given the chance, even if they did not own their own transportation).

There was more damage done in Mississippi and people of that state were not crying and holding their hands out for money, they stood up and put their lives back together. (What about the destruction of Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, Mobile, Pensacola, or Navarre?  No one has any concern for these cities.  The majority of US citizens don't even know of the damage caused to these cities because New Orleans it still feeling sorry for itself and is the only city anyone ever hears about.  I have seen the destruction in all these cities as well as the New Orleans destruction; it was all of the same magnitude.)

Anyone that thinks New Orleans is still suffering is ignorant of what really happened in that area.  I would know, I was there.  Stop feeling sorry for New Orleans.
Start getting mad because they won't take care of their own problems with their own resources.  It’s been 3 years; New Orleans needs to stop asking for hand-outs and the US populace needs to stop feeling “sorry” for them.  Of course I have sympathy for the lives lost, but there were also lives lost in the cities mentioned above.  New Orleans was not the only place affected, it was just more news worthy because it brought more people to the “boob-tube”.

In addition, it won't matter to me if someone writes back to tell me I am wrong, because I know I am right and YOU are WRONG.
How nice to have a goverment that sees to your every need and knows what is best for all its citizens. I wish we could be that lucky,,, OPPS !!!! I guess we are ,, go Nancy Pelosie and Mr Obama !!! Tater58 over and out
Bob Lawrence--your comment about USA being "blessed of God" is shocking.  I'm not quite sure what criteria you are using.  America is no more blessed of God than is China!  It claims to be a Christian country but is not.    Christians do not seek vengence, they do not get involved in politics, do not get involved in war.  America is foremost in these things.  Granted, it is a wonderful place to live...but it is in no way blessed by God.  We cannot attribute material wealth as blessings from God.  If that were the case, then those in the Bible who were materially poor were not blessed.  America gets involved in just about every conflict imaginable...and for what?  There is always some financial interest.  God is not interested in the politics of this world.  He has his own kingdom that can be ruled from heaven.  Furthermore, it says in Acts that "in every nation the man that fears him is acceptable to him."  That would include those in OTHER countries besides USA.
All else aside, it was an almost 8 earthquake. Even with the best construction, schools would probably still collapsed and children would still have died.

Now the 'moving on' thing and signing the paper, that bites.  But the Communist party has always been noted for their lack of humanity.  Wonder how many party elite lost their kids.
This article brought tears to my eyes. I cant even imagine living in a government so cold. And "they are allowed to have another child". I just can't imagine this. The government telling you how to move on, being payed to "hush up" about losing a child. And being told how big your family can be in the first place is just insane. I feel ignorant because I never think about the countries that do not have the liberties and civil rights that us americans have. Its a really big eye opener. Its terribly sad situation and I wish that it didn't take this to open my eyes! wow...
We are forgetting the bottom line here...hundreds of parents bearing the loss of their children.  All I know is that The Lord does does things for a reason and that believe it or not, those inocent children are in a much better place where they dont have to worry about rights, freedoms, poverty, etc. God bless them.
I am very upset to hear the story from you.The authority which chinese is grateful to should do something to not make a mistake
No!No!No!
I'm from Deyang City,Sichuan Province,China.
When you say the chinese people were  brianwashed?
are you sure the information you get is completely right?
the poor parents just want to do something to cover the scars in their heart.
The Propaganda War broken out in my hometown, Gov gaves homeless people with food, room. and we are rebuilding the school and hospital, but there are too many things to do,anything should do again, and some problem remain....both people and gov are busying working.then what so-called "Human Righter Fighters" and F--king Falun Gong want some riot!
I just want to say,   We have been suffering too much,Nobady want any unrest!
Go to Sichuan yourselves!   Both our media and your media are S**t
Have you ever been in China before? If not, please do not make assumptions.

it is a very good article, and one that makes you think how the powers (yes, with s... because it seems there are many) are moved in this world making life miserable on the low and middle classes to profit out of companies, goverments and entire nations... This is not a United States, China thing, it is the so called globalization (all the companies/countries who have trades with China), the pure capitalism (where only the wealthy have the more chances "to succed"), the pure communism (where voices are shut up w/extorsion, incarceration, punishment, etc.), the pure fanatism (where religion is only a flag carried for the bad ones just to say that it's a God's desire)... These Olympic games have the taste of the Capitalism vs Communism, leading by the US vs China among other athletes and nations that their legitima goal is to play fair and win with honor... honor has been lost it in the high spheres of the powers... yes, the ones the rule this world until we, the masses, decide to change...
It saddens me to think of all these grieving parents and a goverment that pushes them under the rug to welcome a world event that promotes peace and unity.  China has put out billions of dollars (in fireworks alone) to put on a great show for the olympics instead of taking a stand and applying that money toward quake victims. I am sure that people of The world would have been OK with a smaller opening ceremony if they knew the money was helping the victims.
However, the USA should not point fingers....we still have our own hurricane, tornado, fire, etc victims that are still suffering and what do we do....Spend money to put up stupid banners to decorate light posts or cameras to monitor intersections, and lets not forget all the wasted money we pay to goverment officials to screw up our states budget and put the citizens in financial ruin, while they live in the upper class without a worry of losing their homes, jobs, cars, or how to feed their children!
Hmmmmm  seems we have more in common with the communists countris then we realize!
My heart goes out to them, but things are not much better in America, Myself, along with 240 others lost their homes to the floods in Illinois and guess what out county was not under the NFIP, so we receive nothing. Aug 20th our county board will vote on the NFIP plan, due to the farmers in the area not wanting this implemented it looks like we are not going to recieve any help from FEMA. We have great issues in our own county that need addressed, why as a citizen that works does not draw unemployment or live off welfare, not count for something I guess bankruptcy will be the answer for most. We need to open our eyes to the dishonesty going on right here.
No offense, but how do you know this journalist is telling the truth? Sometimes people tend to see what they want to see and hear what they want to hear ONLY. The communism vs. capitalism differences between the two countries have greatly affected what and how US media show to US people. If you really want to know what's going on in China, if you really care about the rest of the world, please try to open up your mind and see for yourself.

China now is obligated to consider the Olympics as her top priority not only for her own honor but also for the entire human beings, and maintaining a stable society is a prerequisite. Moreover, the Olympics was not created to be a political tool but to be a union of the mankind, no religion, no politics, no races... By the way, mixing politics with Olympics is against the Olymipics spirit and ignorant (sorry, couldn't find a better word)... As a Chinese, I'm sure my goverment will do whatever it takes to investigate the construction matter and answers to the people(maybe it is doing that but NOT REPORTED) and people who had done bad things won't be forgiven. If you have seen how soldiers dug the debris by hand (equipment sometimes couldn't be used because of the subtle weight balance of debris) day and night trying to rescue more even if the hope was frail, or extensive donations from all over the country, or quick response of Chinese leaders (Premier Wen Jiabao went to the epicenter on the same day and conducted rescue on site for days) and real-time casualty report... you wouldn't say that Chinese government does't care about its people.

It's natural that there are people not satisfied with what government has done; it happens in every country in human history. There hasn't been one policy that could make everyone happy. Since it's not realistic to do so, any government that does its best to make most happy and help them live a beter life deserves respect and support!
Comparing China's earthquake to Katrina is a symptom of what is wrong with the USA.  People blinded by emotion and totally lacking in reason and logic.  People who allow the media to herd them like sheep.

"Getting our house in order" would require honesty in the media.  Placing the blame for Katrina where it belongs - with the local people and the local government officials.  It is because of the corrupt local politicians using "friends" to build and maintian the levees.  Because of the people electing corrupt or incompetent local politicians that promised to take care of them.  You know, the politicians that like to tax the rich to support the poor.
America does not believe in beautiful people.  That's why all the best known celebrities are so ugly.  Come on man.  Dont act like the same thing does not happen in america all the time.  Eithe only good looking people can sing or we are unwilling to promote/support people we find unappealing.

I am not nor will ever be a communist, but whast makes you think a "democratic" government is so much better.

By the way,you can be a democratic despot as well as a communist tyrant
hi,Ian.I'm Winny from China.I really do appreciate your report about Si Chuan, which reveals many things and facts I'll never get from the newspaper or TV here.Firstly I wanna say,I believe every details you reported, and as a Chinese,I can say I never and cant forget these victims died in the quake.I dont know how much tears Ive shed for these kids who are even younger than I.and expcept donation,I cant figure out what else I can do.I wont express how sorry and sad I am here anymore, cuze I'm sure you can feel the same from the article.
Then I wanna say sth about our gorvernment, please bleive I'm not here to justify the conduct of our gorvernment.I just wanna share my opinion.
Please, please trust me that China is changing and developping.if the gorvernment can controll all of us,I wont be here to comment,I'll nenver have chance to have a single glance about the contrary side of china.
I know we still have many problems.but imagine how big China is ,and how many people we have.I'm the single Child in the family too,and yes,I often feel lonely ,boring, for no brothers or sisters playing talking with me while daddy and mummy working.but the one-child policy have to apply,or not only the contry and the resources cant afford ,the family cant afford too!I cant imagine whether I can learn piano, having lessons in famous colleage if I get a brother or sister...so one child policy has nothing to do with the human right, but to the nature resorce and life quality problems.
and about the shobby construction and the unanswered questions.I guess the parents already get the questions in their heart.and we Chinese all know the answer.Thats why dad and I cried so heavily before the TV.I'm speachless about that, but one thing I can assure is the  constructions are built in 50s or 60s.and its a shame no one once found they are too old,or sth else.....sorry,I cant say anything bad about my country,I'm a chinese ,and I really love being a Chinese.
No gorvenments can never make mistakes all over the history I suppose, especially in a big contry.Maybe the gorvernment has used a wrong method, but thats better than a insurrection.we all wish China ,a big family with 56 kids can live together,no quarrel,no fight.and the parents of 56kids is hard to plan and organize everything for them, and once they make mistake,I bet the parents  really hope  neighbours in the earth village to help ,point out problems ,offer advises  and support them ,not just critism, and the whole family will appreciate that much.lol
shame for my poor English, cant say anything more, and its really late here....
last but not least, please have faith on China, cuze you see,China has amount of young students like me,dynamic, intelligent, confident, symphathetic, having sense of justice, and kind of boastfal.haahaa

Bravo to Terry, NY,New York!!  How refreshing to read something intelligent written by an American.
I dont know If ya'll heard about the boy that was allowed to walk in the opening ceremony with Yao Ming(sp) He was an 8 yr old boy who was a survivor of the quake. not just a survivor but a hero the 8 yr old boy saved the lives of 3 classmates (his class of 30 lost 22 children). The eight yr old boy's only comment was "I am a hall moniter it was my responsibility." when I heard this I was moved to tears. What will the Chinese govmt. do to make this boy and his surviving classmates "forget"? He will never be able to wash away these memories and the ones he couldnt save.
I am no expert on China, as I've never been there. The fundamental difference is that they are Communist and we are a Democracy. There is really nothing we can do to change that. We cannot force our own ideas upon the rest of the world. If we want to make the "world" a better place, then we should start with our home, then neighborhood, then city, then state. It won't do any good to blame anyone else. It is truly sad when any natural disaster occurs. If the parents really wanted answers they could have united and refused to sign anything or take any money. The whole event is sad.
Please stop for those who are in China now. I'm not sure how much you know about a real China. Probably you only touch the surface of the country. what the country&people show to you are pretty much not the same with the reality. Chinese peoople do need God who is the only way to help them out of the terrible life.   BTW, I'm a Chinese.
I think people who complain about how unfair our govenment is should go live in countries like China. Not for a week or two but for at least a year. Maybe then they would realize just how great it is here. At least we aren't censored when catastrophic events happen.
I'm going to only buy American made products after reading this.
Image is everything.
After investing nearly a billon dollars on the games the CCP you may recall received bids from several PR firms to specifically learn how to "sell" their image. I guaranty they received a bonus for the PR scoop of projecting the "caring" patriarchic posturing in it's aftermath.
As I witness the parade of manipulation and deception I fear most gullible people will still not understand that it is but the "tip of the iceberg".
My personal hope is that their overconfidence and paranoia will inadvertently reveal enough of the reality to awaken yet more of the world from it's trace.
Over here in the United States, I lost my loving mom, Lois on May 12th. I know God called her early to help with all the children that went to heaven that same day. I will keep them all in my prayers. Thank you for the story. My heart aches for the families that lost loved ones!
This IS unlike Katrina.  70,000 people didn't die in Katrina.  There WERE state AND federal warnings to evacuate in Katrina (which Nagin summarily ignored).  We never asked our people to remain silent about it.  We never paid people off to keep quiet about it.  We never never tore down memorials to our loved ones.  We forgot because our world cruelly moves on, not becuase we have an image to maintain.

To liken this event to Hurricane Katrina is unfair to every victim of this earthquake, and to another level the victims of Katrina.  Simply be grateful that this kind of thing doesn't happen in the United States.
FYI to add on- China had no obligation to the glitz of the olympics.  I would strongly urge you all to research the kind of labor, uprooting, and silencing that went into the remarkably expedited construction of the new Olympic plaza in China.  It's sickening.

PRAY FOR THE VICTIMS OF CHINA. EARTHQUAKES HAPPEN AROUND THE WORLD. EVEN OUR COUNTRY,U.S.A. IS NOT EXEMPTED TO CALAMITIES. WE ARE ALL AS VULNERABLE AS OTHER COUNTRIES. LET US REMEMBER THE VICTIMS IN OUR PRAYERS.
WOW, I can not believe what I am reading. Most of you have never been out of the USA never mind visiting China. Check your clothes and most EVERY item in your house and find out who you are supporting. The USA government borrows money from China to pay down its dept. Oh, and you must be driving a Ford or Chevy...right?

I was outraged when when I saw the responce to Katrina. Temporary housing with asbestoes in the walls....great. Killing, looting, rapping, police running away. Get your own house in order before  talking about others.

The victims of Katrina and the Chinese quake need sympathy and love.... period.
China's one child policy is funded by UNESCO-a branch of the United Nations!  Who funds the United Nations...oh let me think...America does!  If you  don't believe me, check it out for yourself. Ah the pomp and grandeur of  the opening ceremonies with China's military goose-stepping it's way to the Olympic podium...the pure racial beauty of the fake child singer and  faked footprint fireworks for mass  consumption. Juden patches and free showers for everyone!

I can only HOPE that their government will learn from this tragity and build the buildings that will withstand an earthquake. I pray for those familys affected.
Anybody notice the price differential between these poor Chinese lives and those involved in 9/11?  Until all life is valued equally, there will always be nationalism, a form of separtism.
My heart goes out to those parents in China who lost their children.  Losing a child is the greatest loss anyone can face.  The government should be doing their own investigation into why all of those schools collapsed (unless they paid contractors to build the buildings without concern for the children and teachers who would reside in those buildings for many hours during the day).  The parents should be able to get answers and not be paid off to shut up and move on with their lives.  Comparing Katrina, where we lost very few lives (around 1,000), to a major earthquake where they lost 70,000 people and 10,000 of those children, is appalling.  Yes, it was very sad and disruptive for many displaced people, but living in Florida has made me aware that when the state is telling you to evacuate, you should evacuate.  Again, no complaining from all of those poor people in Iowa, why is that?  They are not blaming the government for the flooding, they live near the Mississippi and they know what can happen, and they deal with it.  Let's pray that God and Jesus take care of our country and that we elect a leader who believes that our country is still in the hands of God and in God we still Trust.
I wish to see the Chinese people free to express themselves without fear. Honesty about shoddy construction and other factors that lead to such a high death toll should be out and public to help save lives in the future. Those who benefited from corruption should be identified. But, for all the world has been through the Olympics should always try to say out of politics. This is athelete's competing against each other and people cheering on their team without wanting to go to war if they lose a match. Olympics should not be tainted by politics - we all need a chance to share in our common humanity and if every event has to be dictated by grudges and judgments we'd be at war all the time with everyone.
Both Katrina and the Sichuan earthquake were natural disasters. The main difference between the two (and, really, the argument-ending difference) is that in America nobody tells you where to live. Even if the government said the levee would hold it's still up to you to use your judgment. Me? I would have ignored what the government said and gotten out of town as fast as I could. Unfortunately, in China, the people don't have this luxury. Even if the shoddy construction of the schools had been pointed out years earlier it wouldn't have made a difference. The people there wouldn't have been able to do anything about it because the government controls EVERYTHING!!

Forget freedom of the press, religion or speech. The government controls the thoughts and actions of its people. The Beijing Olympics, though grand as they may be (I would have been disappointed with anything less as the government has unlimited coffers to delve into since it is not accountable to its citizens unlike most Western governments) are a farce. It's already been proven China will do everything within its power to win (even cheat by using underage athletes; RE: women's gymnastics). Anyone who believes they've turned the corner is blind, dumb or both.
both very great tragedies. also for all those people thinking katrina only affected new orleans (which was not hit directly, mainly affected 2 days later when levees broke), remember mississippi and alabama coast suffered majority of wind and water damage. also that many people outside new orleans were living in areas judged to be non-risk zones (based on level of water after hurricane camille). and one more thing, is that this was water driven by wind, which pushed it further inland. so remember, is not just new orleans with many still homeless, just people forget so quickly. people were dying in hospitals and shelters in new orleans and mississippi due to lack of resources and shortage of medical personnel.
"This brings tears to my eyes. Precious children taken/died in a horrible way. Parents just wanting answers. Forced to sign a statement that they won't protest?? Hopefully anyone reading this heart rending article will realize how important freedom is, and try not to take it for granted all of the time. I thank God and appreciate my freedom, my children's freedom and my grandchildren's freedom. This is a simple message, but one that I felt I had to add. "

To Christal Parrish (author of above) - DITTO!  I hug my four wonderful children a little tighter these days.

There is little we can do from here but pray.  May the Lord carry these parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, children...through while they try to find a way to breathe again.

Um...am I the only person who saw that "70,000 dead" thing up there? Call me a fanciful dreamer, but isn't that a tad more important than rants about how great and terrible China is, how Katrina was exactly the same and totally different, how easy it supposedly is to tear up roots and relocate, how you can fit Barack Obama into this dicussion (which you shouldn't be able to unless you have some sort of agenda), and how spiffy keen Jesus is?
Am I really the only one who thinks 70,000 dead are a little more important than the opportunity to spout personal rhetoric?
Please do not compare this to Hurricane Katrina.  The only thing the same is that it was a "natural disaster".  Keep in mind the people affected by Hurricane Katrina had many days notice that a hurricane was on the way.  The people being mentioned as victims of Katrina in Louisiana decided on their own to "hunker down".  I live in Houston, TX.  I saw 1st hand how this city opened it's arms wide to all who came here.  Many of those people have moved on after a year or so of money from our government to pay their rent, food bills etc.  I see several in apartments in Houston hanging out on the streets during the day not working!  I admit it took awhile for the government to react...we depend on the city to do their part as well as the state.  Both the city of New Orleans and state of Louisiana fell down on the job.  They did not do their part before or after the Hurricane.  It is very easy to blame the US Government.  When it was very very clear that the Louisiana officials did nothing, our government spent BILLIONS and sent troops to cover Mayor Ray Nagin and the Governor's tail end.  God help the Chinese people from their Communist Machine.  They are the enemy, not our government.
It's interesting the people who are saying our government is doing all this business with China.  We want the cheapest, so they go where they can make things cheaply.  Guess where?  China.  As long as we are willing to buy things that are cheaper and American companies are forced to look somewhere else to have things made cheaply, guess what?  We feed China.  I do everything I can not to buy ANYTHING made in China.  Sometimes it's impossible if it is something that I need.  After saving for 10 years, I finally got to Italy. I bought my three granddaughters souvenier purses from Venice.  Imagine my anger when I looked inside and, yes, they were made in China!
I think China's government handled the earth quake disaster better than what U.S. goverment did during Katrina. My deepest sympthy for those who suffered great loss in the earth quake, no amount of answers or compensations will ever be enough!!! Blaming Chinese government seems the easiest.
lashell: have all the kids they want? so what do americans say when hispanics are "having all the kids they want"?

Terry: thank you. that is very true
My goodness.  I am shamefull for having forgotten the innocent children who were killed in the earthquake.  Thank you for bringing my shortcoming to my attention.

As for all of the Katrina comments, many less notable cities and towns are struck by hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, drought, and you name it each year. You don't hear the masses cring out for them.  Instead the phrase, "personal responsibility" is uttered.
To the Chinese Citizens: "Be grateful" in the knowledge that this Communists Party will not last forever. You will win your Freedom. Peace be upon you.
There are two completely different culture here.

Western culture values the individualism, and that's the drive for the economy and political process.

The Chinese culture is a culture that individuals serve the whole. The Chinese government believes that for the whole to advance, the stability is the most important thing, so it silences the complaints with force.

I can almost bet that after the Olympics is over, some government officials and contruction company owners in Sichuan who did the shobby building will be in trouble. Some will lose jobs. Some will go to jail.

However, Chinese government like to work in its own pace. They don't like to be told how and when to do it.

And I will also bet that the aftermath of the earthquake will come quicker in China than in US or any of the European countries. If the same thing happens in US, yes, the parents will have the freedom to speak out, will have TV time, maybe book deals, but the investigation will last five to ten years until everyone forgets (remember Katrina?).

Let's use ane example of earthquake - the 1989 Loma Prieta (6.9) destroys portion of the bay bridge. It took them 1.7B and 10 years to rebuild the on-ramp. However, the bay bridge is still unsafe and the new one, as of today, is still under contruction and won't be finished until at least 2013 (25 years later).

By the way, the Sichuan earthquake is 7.9, with 32 times energy as the Loma Prieta. If bay bridge is hit with a 7.9 earthquake, the whole thing will go under, not just a couple of sections.
I just don't understand why everyone is so surprised by the Chinese government & their actions for these poor parents. Hello! They are a communist country! These are the exact same stories my mom & dad went through in post WWII Hungary. Just because they've embraced the monies of the West, doesn't mean it's a democratic society. I just hope people realize just how good they have it here. Is it perfect? No. But, can you imagine being thrown into a "one year labor re-education" just for writing these blogs we are doing? Thankfully, I can't!
