Cuba develops 'breakthrough' cancer drug

HAVANA – A Cuban Scientific Research Institute just patented a promising new drug that it says helps terminal lung cancer patients live longer.

In some cases, the drug known as CimaVax EGF extended the lives of participants in the treatment trials by close to a year.

Dr. Gisela Gonzalez, head of the Cuban cancer research team, holding vials of the new drug.

CimaVax EGF, is classified as a therapeutic vaccine, because it is composed of modified proteins that help the body recognize and destroy cancer cells for those already suffering from lung cancer. It does not prevent lung cancer.

"It is the first lung cancer vaccine to be patented in the world," said Dr. Gisela Gonzalez, head of the team that researched and developed the drug through testing with hundreds of patients over 16 years.

She did point out that other countries are working on similar vaccines, but that they are still in the development stage.

Gonzalez cautioned that while it is "not a miracle drug," she does believe it is a "breakthrough in treating terminally ill patients."

While the research team would not identify any side effects of CimaVax EFG, Gonzalez claims it has numerous advantages over traditional treatments alone. Patients breathe easier, experience less fatigue, less pain and increased appetite. It is administered in conjunction with conventional treatments of chemo and radiotherapy.

CimaVax EGF is undergoing testing in other countries.

After Cuba concluded the Phase One study that determined safe dosage and the best way to administer the vaccine, Phase Two trials started in Cuba, Canada and England, said Gonzalez. This August additional ones begin in China and Peru. Already the vaccine is being registered in Malaysia for sale in Europe.

While testing has been approved by the U.S. government, clinical studies may not begin for at least two years.

The Phase Two studies that were conducted in Cuba and elsewhere took a look at how much longer patients lived with CimaVax EGF as compared to other treatments. Those given the vaccine lived on average 11.47 months compared to 5.33 months for terminal patients treated with only chemotherapy and/or radiation. In the best case scenarios, some fortunate patients lived for up to 18.53 months while taking the new vaccine, compared to other patients who lived for just 7.55 months while undergoing conventional treatment.

Given those clinical results, Cuba started Phase Three studies in the hope that CimaVax EGF could become the new standard of care in treating end stage lung cancer.

About 4,500 new cases of lung cancer are diagnosed annually in Cuba while the disease claims over 1.3 million deaths worldwide annually, with the highest rates in the United States, Canada and Europe.

Across the globe, lungs are the most common site of fatal cancers for both women and men. Lung cancer generally affects people over 50 who have a history of smoking, although other risk factors include exposure to second hand tobacco smoke or pollutant emissions from cars or factories.

CimaVax EGF could also prove effective in slowing other cancers, believes Dr. Tania Crombet, the team’s chief clinical researcher at Havana’s Center for Molecular Immunology. She said that researchers have begun testing CimaVax EGF’s effectiveness against breast, prostate, uterus and pancreas cancers.

Crombet also said CimaVax EGF is now available in Cuban hospitals for any patient, regardless of nationality. "We can market the vaccine in Cuba and receive patients from outside."

And that could mean an influx of fresh, hard currency for the struggling island’s economy.

Doesn't matter where it's from, it's good news.  I hope the Cuban government continues to deregulate and starts the transition to the market and that the next President acts to normalize relations.  It's important for both of our countries.
Litigation from the few that are harmed out of the thousands that could be helped prevents dozens of drugs like this from already being marketed in the US.
This is a relief. Since I cannot afford health insurance here in the United States its nice to know that I can fly over to Cuba and get top notch healthcare for my lung cancer...probably for free.

This is further proof that the US needs to implement socialized healthcare.

WTF - what did we spend the money on - Tanks?
There are smart people everywhere!
Forgive me for saying so but this article sounds a little like something from The Onion. Cuba develops revolutionary cancer treatment! See? Hard to believe.
Well, I am very happy that we have more treatment options, of course.
Kudos to Cuba and the Socialist System (Sarcasm)
If you want socialized medicine, go to Cuba... and stay there!
US LATINOS HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN ABOUT CUBAS SUPERIOR HEALTH SYSTEM AND TREATMENTS.  I'M GLAD MORE WHITE AMERICANS ARE STARTING TO GET MORE INFORMED.  IF YOU NEED THE HELP HERES A TIP,  YOU HAVE TO TRAVEL THROUGH MEXICO.  CONSIDER THIS ISSUE ON YOUR WAY TO THE POLLS.
I DON'T THINK OUR DRUG COMPANIES WILL LIKE THE COMPETITION.  THEY PROBABLY WILL JUST RELEASE A NEW FORM OF CANCER THAT IS IMMUNE TO TREATMENT TO MAKE UP THEIR PROFIT
What a bunch of garbage, simple and honest Cubans are not able to get even a simple antibiotic from the Communist Government and they now claim they have this wonderful cancer drug.  If you all want "free medicine" move to the island, make sure you adapt to a total control type of government where you have NO rights.  You can get anything in Cuba IF you have Dollars and you are a turist, not as a citizen.  Stop complaining, we live in the best country in the entire world! Nice journalisim MSNBC....(sarcasm too!).
Why does the USA have a double standard vs Cuba. Cuba has no different form of Government that does China and North Vietnam. Cuba would be an excellent choice for people who need this treatment and compared to what it would cost elsewhere, financially feasible. Forget about politics, health is a number 1 priority!
When will people realize that Cuba is making great strides while we are lagging far behind!  Could it be that it is not the interest of helping people that rules our research but the almighty dollar?
There is nothing to report here except the fact that MSNBC is glamorizing a communist brutal regime.  Ordinary Cubans do not have what we all read and believe, they struggle every day even the doctors struggle.  They do not get the medical care we get here - believe me.  Hospitals are a disgrace, but then again, if you have dollars and you are a tourist, they will get you anything.  Wake up! this is the best place on earth.
PS: Ask Canadians why they come here for medical treatment?...it's called Socialism.
Nefi Arce, your "SUPERIOR HEALTH SYSTEM AND TREATMENTS" Cuba has ruined hospitals with septics enviroments even in the intensive therapy guard, no medice. Pleople get to know what their illnes is, but they do not have medice to cure it. The "family doctor" system is a fraud and... everything is not paid by the goverment but by the people that pay a 95% of their salaries in  "ghost taxes".
I'm curious what the side effects are, and why they aren't disclosed.  The other question I have is why the FDA turns away good medicines like Vioxx in all cases just because of concern over a few small cases.  All treatments involve risk and if those risk are known to the doctor and told to the patient the patient assumes responsibility for those risks even if they included death.  If there's a 50% chance of death with a drug I won't take it but if there's a .0001% chance I will probably. We are so afraid of lawsuits that one death is too many and we need the perfect drug for everyone which may never exist.  We should find a good drug for most and monitor those who fit the risk profile the closly, or not give them the drug at all.
I think it should be common knowledge by now that Cuba has had exemplary healthcare availabe to their citizens for most of the last decade. Our healthcare system can learn a lot from theirs
In America we have many drugs in development for lung cancer.  They are not being marketed yet because of the strict safety and efficacy regulations of the FDA.  I doubt very highly if this new vaccine has been tested as thouroughly by Cuba with their weak regulatory environment.  If this was made in America you can bet that everyone would be saying how the FDA is in league with drug companies to produce shoddy drugs for profit.
We may live in the best country in the world but we need to improve things like infant mortality rates(we're behind Cuba),pollution, etc. This is a scientific "medical" article.  We don't need to resurrect the ghost of Mas Canosa,(whom could have been treated for his lymphoma in Cuba instead of dying in the US). Cubanos do quite a bit with very little.
Some fools are still upping up this antics "I am American, buy and Support only American, etc. etc..." You are blind to many things and obstinate...you fail to recognize or utilize human breakthrough that any other nations can contribute to the betterment of fellow mankind.

Word of advice for you the foolhardy; take it or leave it....History is dotted with unrecoverable failures of great nations whose citizen remain complecent to the little positive contributions of the lowest and common man that leaves outside their boundaries of reality. Yes I am American and very patroitic but not fooled by antics nor blind by emotions. I learn from the best.
it is wellknown outside of the USA, that Cuba has fantastic doctors and healthcare system.
...7000 scientists working on developing medicine. I wonder when we compare this number as a percentage of all scientist in Cuba to the percentage of our scientist working on new drug development how do we measure up as far as urgency to save lives? I know our healthcare system regularly allows people to die because they cannot pay for the right care....something is wrong with picture...greatest country in the world? maybe the richest. People should not be denied the right medical care because they cannot pay for it in the greatest country in the world.
I am tired of people promoting free health care! Who do people think they are, wanting their government to provide for them when they are sick? Living a healthy and long life should not be a right; it is a privilege that comes with a prize tag. If you can’t afford to be healthy then that is too bad.  It is bad enough that we have a socialized education and we know how bad of an idea that is, right. It is bad enough that the government forces an educated pop. Now they want a health one too? (Sarcasm too!) If Americans weren't so ethnocentric they would know that Cuba has the highest rate of doc. per capita.  Their principle export is doctors. I guess that is what you get with a free education through and through.  How much is a decent medical school in the states $200,000?
For those of us who have had or have cancer, every advance brings hope of ever better prevention and treatment.  Please keep us informed.
"WTF - what did we spend the money on - Tanks?" $580 billion in Iraq, for starters. Also, US drug manufacturers spend more on marketing than they do on research.
THE PERSON FROM MIAMI MUST BE A CUBAN WHO CAN NOT SEE GOOD THINGS COMING FROM CUBA  WHAT A DISGRACE . WAY TO GO CUBA  SCIENTIST .
I'm a cuban and very happy about the break in cancer treatment.Cuba Drs are very hard working and making breat progress, and what are we doing in USA for better medical care I hope we learnd something. And that Cuban from Miami what do you expect in Miami they have no praid, give him a burger Millie
Again we have people talking about healthcare that don't have any idea as to how it is paid for and by who.  Most cancer drugs in the US are covered by Medicare.  And most people who get cancer are on Medicare.  The simple fact is just like anything else in the US you get what you pay for.  If you want care dumbed down for all you will get a dumbed down health care system.
"....some fortunate patients lived for up to 18.53 months while taking the new vaccine..." If you have ever watched a loved one suffer and die from lung cancer, you would know that the "extra time" is NOT a blessing! It's hell for the patient, and family never forget the agony they see in his/her eyes. For most victims, the quicker they die, the better it is for them. My dad wanted to die; and we were happy for him when he passed.Lung cancer takes a big, husky man and turns him into an invalid--so sad.
I agree with many of you----if you want socialized medicine move to a country that offers it. Who do you think pays for this type of health care system? We do, hard working american citizens who can barely put food on the table and gas in their car as it is, now were are taxed yet again so everyone can have health care? It is not that I am heartless I do feel for anyone who can not get the care they need but I just can't see how socialized medicine is going to solve the problem, everyone may have health care but what other unforseen issues would rise from this?  If the government were willing to put the billions into health care for the uninsured instead of the war, now were talkin...there doesn't seen to be any money when it comes to health care or shelter for the homeless or education things every american pays for every week out of their hard earned pay and property taxes but there is always money for war, $2500 hammers and toilet seats. The government in this country does what they want when they want cause they can. I for one can not afford to pay any more than I already do. And to add to this now the illegal aliens get social security something most of them never paid a dime into, they have it made, free lunch school programs, social security money they never put into, and don't pay taxes....and of course FREE MEDICAL something americans do not have the luxury of having, all I can say is what a countyr.
Don't believe all the rhetoric yu here about how great the Cuban health care system is - why are thousands trying to flee that country. If you want socailaized medicine here be ready for $8.00 a Gallon gas, $50.00 for a case of beer, a bottle of liquor or a bottle of wine. Cigarettes will cost $10.00 a pack and you will be assessed a 10% payroll tax to get the program started. Then you will have the pleasure of waiting months to see a Dr. all the while you may have cancer spreading inside your body. Enough people die waiting for organ transplants here and that number will go up five fold with socialized care. But as I here a lot of idiots say "it's free". The truth is it is only free to the non-working/non-productive citizens while the middle class will pay for it and the rich will buy their own insurance and bump the poor slobs waiting in line for care. In addition to all this wonderful news another result will be higher costs for all goods and services and a near 10% unemployment rate like it is in Europe. Sound sooooo... great can't wait to sign up.
For those of us who have had or HAVE cancer, every advance brings hope of  better prevention and treatment. I don't care who finds what first i have been battling malignant melanoma ( skin cancer ) since 2003 .
Free socialized medicine? Are you serious?  Nothing is free, you pay for it one way or another.  Either you give up most of the money you earn through taxes or you write a check at the doctor's office, you still have to pay for your treatment.  Cuba is a nation of poverty and corruption.  Socialism at it's finest.  If the socialist/communist government worked, cuba would be a a successfull, thriving nation.  It's not.  Sometimes people just don't want to be bothered with facts.
The Lung Cancer dfrug developed in Cuba is undergoing review in a few NON_COMMUNIST countries in Europ[e, wherre very strict test protocols are observed. If ther U.S. can cosy up to China, it can certainly get over its vengeful, paranoid treatment of Cuba and benefit both countries. The FREE market is not really so, and we tend to have amind-set left over fromthe 50's in this matter. Think for yourserlf, and don't let the State Department be your only mentor. America has Freedom: use it.

Let's just blame Bush and his New World Order for causing cancer in the first place.
I find it amazing to read comments from people who 1) have absolutely no idea what is taking place in Cuba  2)have never stepped foot in Cuba, but begin to profess they know how good the Cuban people have it.  I am not going to waste my time trying to educate the ignorant, but I can tell you, I have spent much time in Cuba over the last 11 years.  Any of you, who profess that Cuba has a sufficient universal health care system, you are moronic. Really, just plain stupid. Please, go there.  Live as the average Cuban lives, then get on your computer, (oops, you won't have access to one or internet service), then begin to tell me how wonderful there health care system is.  I am not saying the U.S. system is perfect, but you spoiled, whining people need to travel outside of your cocoon, wake up, and be thankful for what you have.  Bottom line, if you are going to come onto this site and defend the Cuban gov't's horrific treatment of it's people, please cry yourself to sleep.  And pray God forgives you, you are PATHETIC!
ps. if Cuba does seriously have a remedy/cure/treatment for Cancer, I say God Bless those individuals, the world should support their research, but I know better, stay tuned.
All those who keep saying what great healthcare Cuba has, let me ask you a question.  Have you ever BEEN there?  Have you seen the hospitals?  Have you seen the pharmacies?
Because I knew an administrator, I got to tour one of their "nicer" hospitals in Camaguey, the third largest city.  The equipment in the intensive care unit was like everything else in Cuba, 50 years behind the US.  Patients have to bring their own bedding and there is no cafeteria.  Their family has to bring their meals to them.

They do have free health care, but despite their "awesome" pharmacological discoveries, I didn't discover any medicine in their pharmacies.

As whacked out as health care is here in America, if I were hurt or extremely sick THIS is the country I'd rather be in!!

God Bless the Cuban Government. Thank you men and women doctor's of Cuba for all your hard Work.
That's wonderful.  Even if it's only a year.
All tho, I'm sure there's a diet that can prevent and even reverse, any cancer.
These "pharm" companies, be them commies or capitalist, probably don't want to loose their big bucks to a 'no cancer' society.
It's a good thing these companies are all mere mortals.  It's easy to fix problems having to do with mere mortals.
any cure is a good cure
It's pretty sad when we think our medical research is the only one that's any good. We are not the only country in the world that has the know how to develop effective medications.
"...With more than 7,000 scientists dedicated to researching new drugs..."
That little tiny island has 7,000 scientists!!!
And just researching new drugs.  I wonder how many other scientists they have researching other fields.
This should be tremendously embarassing for the U.S.
We are more than a third of the North American continent, can spend trillions on war, but can't take care of our own citizens, thanks to the greed and power of Corporate America.

Just ask the Canadians how long they have to wait to get even the simplest things done. Ask if they have a choice of doctors. Ask if their doctors are permitted to use their professional skills to determine the best choices for each individual patient, or whether they have to do what "big brother" tells them to do, only.

Instead of institutionalizing medicine, how about doing something to knock off the horrendous, out of control litigation we are burdened with. Stop blaming doctors and medical professionals for what the pharmaceutical companies and lawyers have been bilking the government and populace for for decades.

Geez.
James Hodges, I agree with you wholeheartedly!.
ben from San Diego, you are nothing but a Republican Malthusian who has no regard for the welfare of the people. In fact, you don't even deserve to live in America. Someone should throw you into Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, which has one of the highest rates of disease in the world. Even walking through it without touching anything, you are likely to catch a disease. Yeah, we'll see who cares about you then, you psycho.
All of you Anti Free Health Care are idiots! So everyone should pay 200 bucks for a needle and 30 bucks for a roll of toilet paper? That is why your hospital bill is 45,000 after getting a hernia fixed. Crooked Insurance companies, and rich snobs like Ben who only care about themselves. Socialism is working for the benefit of everyone. But then again, we all know ben voted for Bush. Wake up America and quit driving your selfish SUV's and being stingy with your money when you have more then enough to pass it on. Bunch of selfish Republican Trash. Republicans like high oil prices and super high insurance premiums so that they and there families can line there pockets with money. After all, 97% of the richest Americans vote republican for there own selfish wealth. Way to go Selfish Tards. (Sarcastic)?
This is an ad hominem attack. Mau "if the person is from Miami, therefore they must be cuban". This argument is fallacious. There are millions of non-cubans living in Miami.
American ignorance is bliss.  It seems as though some Americans believe that the only history is their history or the only reality is American reality.  This is what has become wrong with this country.  This nationalism has destroyed our minds and credibility with the rest of the intelligent world.
I can't for the life of me figure out why we don't normalize relations with Cuba.`I have read for years that they send their top notch doctors to South America to the benefit of the many. What a horrible idea. We on the other hand prefer to send soldiers and death to foreign countries. Any drug that helps terminally ill patients should be backed by our goverment. If it doesn't live up to it's hype what damage does it relly do. The older persons of cuban descent just foment hatred for the old regime. Liberation can only come through a relationship with a democratic nation. When people see the freedom we enjoy they generally will change their gov't. Think of how much better ewe would be viewed if 20 percent of our "war chest" was invested in helping other countries that are less fortunate than we.
Wow...Cuba has come up with an unproven, non verified treatement for one type of cancer..maybe.

How many thousands of medical breakthroughs come out of the US every single year?

Quick!  Someone implement Socialized Medicine!

Pfft...
