Obama's AIPAC speech riles Palestinians

Sen. Barack Obama's speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) on Wednesday shocked many Palestinians, who had hoped he would be a sympathetic advocate for the Palestinian cause in the White House.

Ayman abu Syrieh, 45, owns a grocery store owner in the Old City of East Jerusalem and has been following the campaign on a daily basis. "Every time Obama was on TV, I asked everyone to be quiet, so I could listen to him," Syrieh said. "When he was talking, he represented hope for me and I believed that he would be the one to bring real peace between Palestinians and Israelis."

But Syrieh’s feelings changed after Obama stressed his support for Israel in the AIPAC speech.

"We were looking at him differently, from Bush and the others," Syrieh, the grocer said. "We thought he would bring real peace to the Middle East. I have to be honest with you, I am shocked now."

Throughout Obama’s run for the Democratic nomination, the sentiment toward him has been extremely warm on the streets of Gaza, the West Bank, and east Jerusalem. Many Palestinians see him as charismatic. They believe that because he is African-American, he knows what it is like to be discriminated against, has empathy for the Palestinians plight, and therefore will be more balanced in peace negotiations than they think past presidents have been.

Many Palestinians like to cite a comment Obama made to a small group of Democratic activists in Muscatine, Iowa, early in the campaign: "Nobody is suffering more than the Palestinian people." The comments drew fire in the United States, particularly from supporters of AIPAC, but were not forgotten among Palestinians.

Obama later clarified in a presidential debate that his remark was actually an indictment of the Palestinian leadership that he believes has caused much of the Palestinians' suffering.

Nimer Hammad, spokesman for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, said he was not surprised by the AIPAC speech. "Anyone participating in Jewish conferences in America tries to be more a Likud member than Likud members themselves," Hammad was quoted as saying in the Arab press. Likud is the major center-right political party in Israel.

And Abbas himself was highly critical of Obama comments and reiterated that Palestinians would not accept a Palestinian state without Jerusalem as its capital. "This is totally rejected and Jerusalem is one of the six items on our agenda," Abbas told reporters in Ramallah.  "The entire world knows very well that East Jerusalem (Arab Jerusalem) was occupied in 1967 and we will not accept a Palestinian state without having Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state."

Obama’s speech to AIPAC on Wednesday was a disappointment, if not a shock, to Hamas, a group considered a terrorist organization by the United States. Hamas, in the past, has expressed support for Obama – support that Obama has rejected.

"We must isolate Hamas unless they renounce terrorism, recognize Israel's right to exist and abide by past agreements," Obama said yesterday, basically echoing the demands of the Mideast Quartet – the United States, Russia, the European Union, and the United Nations – which are involved in mediating the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.  "There is no room for terrorist organizations," Obama added.

Hamas didn’t appreciate Obama’s comment. "It will show that the two parties are supporting occupation at the expense of the Palestinian people," Sami Abu Zuhri, Hamas’ spokesman in Gaza, said.

The Israeli press, on the other hand, welcomed Obama’s seemingly full-throated support. Ma'ariv, a popular Hebrew daily newspaper in Israel, ran a frontpage headline calling Obama’s speech an "embrace" of Israel.

And Israel’s Channel 2 broadcast noted that Obama’s statement that "Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel and it must remain undivided," even exceeds what most current Israeli leaders would say. The statement is something "reminiscent of the days of Menachem Begin's Likud!" said Channel 2's anchor, referring to one of the founding fathers of the state of Israel.

Mahdi Abdul-Hadi, a Palestinian political analyst, told NBC News on Thursday that Palestinians should be pragmatic and understand the circumstances in which Obama spoke before judging his words.

"Remember this is a campaign speech, and he's addressing the most powerful American Jewish lobby. Also, the Democratic nominee has to follow the lines of the party's position," said Abdul-Hadi.

"Those in the Arab world who condemn him are short-sighted, and it is too early to come with strong reactions," Abdul-Hadi said. "Obama needs to keep the party under his leadership and can’t leave room for anyone to doubt his integrity, which could weaken his challenge to McCain."

Asma’a, 23, a student who lives in Wadialjoz, a neighborhood in Jerusalem and works part-time as a social worker, said she is a fan of Obama, but was disappointed by his comments about Jerusalem, which seemed to exclude Palestinians from the future of the city.

"How can he talk about the Palestinian state all the time, and suddenly he says Jerusalem is the capital of Israel? Where is the capital of the Palestinian state?" said Asma’a, who asked not to use her last name.

While Obama’s speech may have won him some new friends in Israel, it seems to have raised doubts in the minds of many Palestinians.

That's a bummer of a situation.  Looks like there is no room for compromise among the Palestinians/Israelis.  Obama could possibly bring some sort of peace to that region, but he's only one man...  How could anyone convince either side to give up their holy city?
It's sad the things one has to do in order to be nominated... resign from your church.. disassociate with your friends... say the right things to the right people just be nominated. It's catch 22, damned if you don't, damned if you do. You get no respect from the candidate you just beat because she feel entitled. People are going to cross politcal parties just so you don't win. I mean you gotta feel for the guy.
This is a glimpse of what will happen when Obama begins to deal with the real world, when his "principled foreign diplomacy" collides with reality. What supporters are thinking, rather, feeling, now about "restoring America's reputation abroad" and obtaining peaceful solutions to foreign problems is not what they will be thinking/feeling when the realities of governing and securing the country confront his idealogy. The Muslim world, in this report, can't distinguish him from George Bush.  Think about it in light of his promises, statements and experience.
our Nation should do was right for both parties and bring peace to the middle east,God knows we need to embrace loving each other then hating each other.
Obama is nothing more than a snake oil salesman.  He says whatever suits his need at the time.  The Rev. Wright scandal should serve as ample basis that he will say and do anything when it is expedient.  Just like he could no more disavow his grandmother only to change his tune months later, I imagine he will throw Isreal under the bus when it is expedient to do so - perhaps while he is negotiating with the President of Iran.

He had audacity alright - the audacity to BS with a sincere straight face and then stab you in the back.  Obama is a total fake. He is dangerous for America.
TO THE PALISTIANS
I WOULDN'T WORRY. HE UNDERSTAND MORE THAN ANYONE WANTS TO GIVE HIM CREDIT FOR, BUT FOR YOU TO MOVE FORWARD HE MUST BE ELECTED, AND TO DO THAT HE MUST CONVINCE MANY WHAT HE STANDS FOR. I WOULD EXCEPT TALK, WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE WITH. HE IS A FAIR MAN.
Obama would court anyone to get the Presidency. It doesn't matter who it is.  I can't believe that he did his best to split the party and now he wants to act like he is the best man to run the country.  This man has no clue how to run foreign policy.  He has no idea how to be the Commander in Chief since he has never been in the military.  This man wants us to believe he is what is best for us.  What a joke.
Geez fellows, what did you expect Obama or any US politician to do for Palestine?  After all, how many campaign donations did Palestinian-Americans make to US candidates this election?  You all should realize that this is a "pay to play" system.  WHen you all get a group together with as much money and muscle as AIPAC, US pol's will start listening to you, too.
I was also a fan of Obama. This just shows that he is a sell out like anybody else; not a bit different from the Clinton lady. Shameful. Everybody should have a piece of the pie; nobody is entitled to the whole cake, politics notwithstanding.
The speech was garbage. Nothing but a political massage to get votes.
Remember, He's not president yet. American Jews vote, not Palestinians. this is a man wise beyond his years and your best bet for justice. he will be sympathetic to your plight, when he is able.
I hated the speech but we will see what he does. I hate lobby groups of all kinds with a passion.
WOW! Obama becomes more commited to Israel more than Bush. I mean to say Jerusalem shouldn't be devided is something no one say either in the Israeli side or Palestinians side except radicals. It's sad, I began to hope but then I was crushed.
Assuming he wins the election, Obama will be President of the United States.  Not president of Palestine, not Prime Minister of Israel.  The people of the mideast should solve their own problems and stop waiting on a Messiah.
I wish we could just get out of the Middle East.  I don't care who the president will be.....he will have the same problems as the prior administrations. I am becoming an isolationist in my old age.
consider this. sand on a beach can be formed into just about anything. whatever it forms can be interpreted differently. these interpretations are variations on the truth and should you focus on them you may never find it
Israel does not understand that stepping on a rattlesnakes tail will cause one to be bitten. They do not understand that if it not be for the American taxpayers being surreptitiously billed, they would not have had the money to kill all those Palestinians.
But powerful countries simply love killing those who do not have the ability to protect themselves and then call it a "war".
American and Israel are false prophets who will be answerable to God and mammon.
I see that Obama is not able to say what he believes, are all of us surprised? This is true because the rich control his campain. The rich are the ones who run campaigns or get support from someone with money. It should not be expected to have a president in office that can speak their mind because everything is governed by how much money a person has to run. Those who can speak there mind are left out, do to the fact that campaign supporters did not like their cause. We should all be able to make that decision (the average Joe or Jane). Give those that do not have the money a voice to reach us all!!!
Wow. Did you really feel that Obama was going to be your shot at getting control over Jerusalem. Palestine your even more nieve than my fellow Americans. I love the speeches from every candidate who boasts change and new leadership. In an election the best one can hope for is to vote for the person they feel will do the least amount of damage.

Rebublicans, Democrats,... their all the same when it comes to doing what's neccessary to win the White House. The problem for me is I haven't seen one candidate in the last two elections that I would vote for. It saddens me that I have to choose one of these three for whom I have no confidence in.

There is no peace in store for the Middle East. How can there be when no one particular country or ethnicity will try and work towards common goals for peace. Oh, that's right, fighting is kinda what you guys do for oh say the last 10,000 years. No, seriously I hope you guys work things out with Israel.  I'm sure Israel will eventually give in to Hamas. NOT
Obama haters - tough break, you lost.  Why don't you do us all a favor and give the guy a break.  Just because you supported someone else doesn't mean that he is evil, or will "say anything to be president".  Take a step back, think about the choices before us as American voters, use your brain rather than your emotions.  Personal, vitriolic attacks serve no purpose.  On the Palestinian question and Obama's veracity, Hillary is the one who had challenging moments related to honesty repeatedly during the campaign (do you really think someone could "forget" whether they had dodged actual bullets shot from a sniper? - not exactly the kind of think you could make a mistake about).  The reverend Wright issue sucks, but it has no bearing on his ability to lead the country.  Any adult that has been in politics for 15+ years is going to have some dirty laundry - that's life.

Please just take a deep breath, drop the attacks, and let the dust settle.  If you end up preferring McCain, great.  Vote, don't attack.

It's sad to see Senator Obama make such a thoughtless comment. Take the Middle East for how it is and help them through this crisis that has gone on for far too long. Israel has not been an angel through all of this turmoil and to write Palestine off so swiftly simply to get support is disgusting. It takes both countries to achieve peace in that region. Having the future leader of the free world publicly alienate one country is an awesomely stupid way to go about it.
Obma is looking for the jewish vote. Bring something to table and he will be looking for your vote, otherwise stop crying about it. Yes we are a democratic society just like israel. Israel is surrounded by people who do not respect thir woman much less themselves.
Wait a second. Why is it our president's job to make Israelis stop air strikes and Palestinians stop rocket attacks??
If you are upset to see someone catering to any group that will get him the presidency then I have two words for you: Ron Paul.

If you can get McCain out, somehow remove him as the republican nominee, you can have a real candidate run for President, one who does not cater to anyone's special interests but rather is informed and follows the Constitution.

A real man
A real republican
A real constitutionalist
A real doctor
A real Christian
A real statesman
A real American
  and
A real presidential candidate
 who will make
A real change
 and
A real effort to rebuild this country for the best interests of the American people.

Look, there is no win win situation, Obama understands both sides of the dilemma. Now he has out raise the clintons in funding and beat the clinton machine. Please give him some credit. He is intelligent. Now look at this speech as political game. After all, this is politics. For those who think Obama is shrewd as the clintons. Yes you are right. But if he wasn't shrewd and smart, then we shouldn't elect and vote for him. Because we need somebody smart and shrewd. Now the difference between Obama and the Clintons is that he does have a heart to help. The clintons just look out for themselves. Look the clintons got money and they should be able to pay for their own debt. But look what we have here on yahoo "Obama campaign open to helping clinton pay off 20 million debt"(http://news.yahoo.com/s/bloomberg/20080605/pl_bloomberg/apktsglzmhzm;_ylt=AhDvHdlKHuUIx.DmOLcaSmcb.3QA.
You know i suspect this meeting could be about  bargaining how to help clinton with their debt, how clinton would write the conceding speech, and how Obama would explicitly draw out the details for clinton in campaigning for Obama. As for the VP spot, definitely no discussion. Maybe if (a big if)clinton wants to be considered for the position, Obama would not waived all the vetting of her and former prez clinton.
Please. no one gets it. This is the CHANGE this candidate is selling to you the American people. It's simple, tell a group, whatever it wants to hear to get you elected. Then , once in office , CHANGE whatever you said. This is the NEW CHANGE this clown is selling. Im voting for HRC.via , the republican candidate for president. My Florida wife and I will make sure our votes get counted this time.Obama thought it was just fine for us to get half a vote each, we see his half and raise him one more half. See ya Chump.
This was tough for me to swallow too. I think the Palestinians have been the victims of imperialism and the only reason our politicians pay homage to AIPAC is because they don't want to be called anti-Semitic for not embracing everything Israel's government stands for. It's a travesty as I'm not even sure if most Jewish Americans support his kind of extreme position, which leads me to believe that a relatively small group of well organized lobbyists now dominates our Mideast foreign policy. I'm hopeful, as Mahdi Adel-Hadi makes a good point in that this may be what he has to do to win and that he won't stick to this extreme position once in office. I, for one, will be happy to see his campaign promise to be a lackey of Israel broken.
I wonder at the weight we give to the words of any candidate in any given election cycle. Who knows, in 20 years, our current administration may be deemed the single greatest force in promoting democratic values in the history of democracy. We forget that politics is like the free market: it has an intrinsic capacity to create outcomes that defy predictions and human attempts to influence outcomes. That's the real Catch 22. Both are the stuff of words. Yet, like poorly raised, tantrum prone children, they seem to do whatever they want despite what we may or may not say. To put it another way: Make the best decision of those in front of you. Trust the future to provide the answers. Still, don't take too much credit for them. Then, maybe a peaceful solution will present itself in the middle-east despite what may or may not be said.
jerusalem and the state of palestin that the centralism point for arbic and islamic world so the real peace between israil and power arabic moderation depend on this impressionable point - like this speeck from the presidential democratic nimonating more than the israil goverment conditions and out of the internationl legitimate so its new start to hanging the peace
Obama is a supporter of Israel no matter what anyone wishes to blog here. He is a man of principle who believes the Palestinians have a right to a country with contiguous land, but he is also adamant that Israel must be allowed to exist securely and freely and that the Palestinians must recognize this if they are to achieve their objectives of a Palestinian state.

Perhaps the Palestinians could take a lesson or two from the South African struggle led by Mandela, the Indian struggle led by Ghandi and the African American struggle led by King. Non-violence reaps desired outcomes. Violence and terror do not.
The only person doing any party dividing is Clinton. She's moral garbage, just like her Husband. They WILL do anything to get what they want and they have proven it in their actions. Obama is not an appeaser. He is a negotiator. Clinton's now finding that out the hard way. She said he couldn't take a hard line, now he is.
I guess he just went against his pledge during his campaign. This goes to show how well his abroad dealings are going to be if he gets elected. This man has no idea and outr country will end up paying the price.
all politicians words b4 elected are just that, words.  No one really knows what they will do until they are finally confronted with the reality of the facts and the finality of a decision.  Remember GB1's "read my lips, no new taxes."  I wouldn't want a politician who never "flip-flopped" bc all that means is that he or she is a close-minded moron who is unable or unwilling to look objectively at facts not supporting his or her point of view.  I don't personally back Obama, but I think it's sad when ppl are so quick to judge those in the limelight.  I want a person in office who is willing to look at "the other side" and change his or her mind from time to time because they realize they didn't have all the facts to begin with.  People who think they are always right scare me.
No, you don't have to "feel for the guy". I guess you agree being a US presidential candidate means throwing your integrity out the window?  How sad that is!  It only proved one thing, the GOP and the Dems are more alike than we think, both marching to the tune of the almighty Israeli dollar.  This is madness.
The Israel and Palestine conflict has confounded the world.  Barack will manage better dialog than anyone else ever has.  Palestinians have bore the greater injustices; but both sides have urgent concerns.  I am 45 yrs old/young, and I doubt I will never see another candidate for U.S. president with the candor and the skill for good leadership as that of Senator Obama.  Barack says this campaign is not about him; but it is about what all of us can accomplish when we work together.  It won't be easy.  I expect to be disappointed about some things; but I love Sen. Obama.
I don't condone terrorism no matter what, but despite those committing terrorist acts, one has to have some level of empathy for Palestinians, as the Israelis have them in refugee camps. I know the Israelis originally had the land, but that was 2,000 yrs ago and the problems now stem from Palestinians being forced into refugee camps since 1947. Not saying I'd become a terrorist, but if they gave the US completely back to Native Americans and put the rest of us in refugee camps, I could see frustration and hopelessness. The Israelis HAVE to give in SOME. I'm not anti-semitic at all, but all of this affects America and you can't have the US support Israel without holding it accountable, else we support Israeli terrorists.
There a time and season for everything under the sun, the sooner everyone get that, the more they will understand the way Obama, should think, and speak. He will be a Great President for all the people.
Obama is even bigger a flip flopper than Kerry was. He says one thing one day...and another thing on another. If he was talking to a palestine group he would have promised them the world...If he was talking to a hard core group of whites in the south...he would promise them to right to wave the confedarate flag. If he was talking to his old church, he would say he would make it against the law to have a confederate flag. This man is wishy washy as you can get. I put more trust and faith in a 17 yr old soldier that just finished boot camp before I would trust his politics. He's a pollster....he will campaign by the polls nothing more...nothing else.

Hillarys best bet for president...is to back John McCain and in four years run again. If she decides to back Obama...she'll be up there in age...and frankly, I dont think Bill can wait that long for new interns!

Our country needs more than a 2 party system... All parties should be on every ballot..but hey... the dems and repubs would NEVER stand for that.
I feel your pain my brothers, I have a feeling that Barack would negotiate the middle east conflicts better than most presidents if not all. Isral groups are very powerful in Washington DC, he has to play the game in oder to win it.
I agree with Susan from MA. Money talks. As the world knows America has the strongest Jewish lobby, and Obama has to go with the flow to win this election, which is what most politicians do republican or democrat. As for Jerusalem , it should be a capital shared by both nations Israel and Palestine.
Here's the reason we haven't made a lot of progress recently...
Our requirements for a President -
1. Wear flag pin
2. Serve in military, unless you are a descendant of a Republican president
3. Be a Christian, preferably born again, unless you're a war hero and then you don't have to attend church or answer religious affiliation questions
4. Be willing to bomb any country that 'hates our lifestyle', whether they have acted aggressively towards us or not
5. Side with Israel all the time, no matter what
6. Either be against or impose limitations on abortion, gays and other 'sin' crimes
7. Be someone we want to have a beer with
8. Hold to the idea behind the slogan 'America, love it or leave it'

Wouldn't it be better if the requirements were -
1. Have a thorough working knowledge of the history of the world and the world's religions
2. Propose fair and equitable solutions to all problems
3. Bomb only when absolutely necessary
4. Have such a respect for our military that you use them with the ultimate discretion and train and equip them properly
5. Stop legislating 'sin'
6. Love the nature of America as much as the idea of America
7. Understand that it is important to love the rest of the world as much as America, since we are all interdependent
8. Be someone whose mind we respect, even if having a beer with you would be the most boring evening of our lives

Unfortunately, ladies and gentlemen, time after time we have gotten exactly what we asked for, so maybe it's time we asked for something else.  Hence Obama won.  Enough of us asked.
Obama is the the brightest and best hope hope the Palestinian people have had in an American poltician; period.  Diplomacy, compromise, and practicality are ultimately going to prevail over hysterical rhetoric.
The next president of the United States of America,
is not the ruler of the world.
Palestinians and Israelites have been in conflict for centuries. They need to stop and settle their own conflict to bring peace in their region. All nations, need to have peace within it self inorder to have peace in the world. Our next president needs to start here in the United States of America. The USA is here to help when we can. We are not the keepers, the goverment of the world
I am Obama surpoter and will always remain one.Sometimes you have to say some things when circumstances dictate. You will come to know the real Obama when he becomes a US president.I think he is a fair person and very inteligent. We should not rush to judge him unfairly.

Re: Jerusalem - the Bible says it is the apple of His (God's) eye. A very, very sensitive thing. Obama is sensitive to God who says Jerusalem is the capital of the world. He has come on strong for God. That will in the end bless the US, read Genesis, (and overflow to Canada as we pray for you). Note - the Bible also predicted the re-esteblishment of Israel. It is a GOOD book.
Thats to bad. He's pissing alot of people off here to.
All that the Palestinians want is justice.  Like so many concerned people everywhere, Obama, with his multicultural background, seemed to be the best hope for recognizing that and pushing the peace process to its conclusion to bring peace , not only to the Middle East, but to the world.  His AIPAC address indicates that it is going to be the same'ole sameole' with him.  What a huge loss for the world. Our government is the most influential player in this conflict as it determines whether or not any progress in the peace process will happen.  If it will not be an honest broker and a neutral referee, then it should get out of the way and let the rest of the world deal with this issue.  That would bring a resolution to the worst political, humanitarian and moral crisis of our time.

AIPAC SPEECH WAS PATHETIC,I THOUGHT HE  IS MAN OF PEACE ,EVEN BUSH DID NOT TALK THAT WAY ABOUT JERUSALEM. I VOTED FOR HIM IN THE PRIMARY BUT HE JUST LOST MY VOTE ,
Obama is a typical Illinois politician with ties to Tony Rezko and other crooks.  Anyone who is familiar with Illinois politics know that it is one of the most corrupt states in the union.
Seeing a soft article on MSNBC trying to excuse this political wish-wash garbage is typical.  One you get past all the smoke and mirrors, one has to wonder: What exactly does Obama stand for?
OBAMA'S SPEECH IS THE CENTER OF THE PEACE PROCSS GIVEN PALESTINIAN ANY PART OF JERUSALEM DOESN'T REPRESENT PEACE.
