Crying for the children, and for justice

DUJIANGYAN, China – Releasing a tidal wave of emotion and anger, hundreds of grieving parents and sympathizers gathered at a pile of rubble that was once the Juyuan Middle School on Tuesday to memorialize the nearly 1,000 teenagers who died when the building collapsed in the May 12 earthquake.

The heart-rending ceremony also offered the victims’ parents an opportunity to demand justice.

A woman clutching the portrait of her daughter, Dong Yan, cursed the people in charge of building the school, which collapsed even though all the buildings around it remained standing. Like most of the people in the crowd, she believes local corruption was the reason for the poor construction.

during the May 12 earthquake in China.

"We want the truth to come out and the corrupt officials to be punished," she said between sobs. "These corrupt players are the ones who have caused us so much misery."

Banners hung across the destroyed building for the occasion were more blunt: "Get even for the deaths of the Juyuan students," read one. Another demanded harsh punishment for the "murderers" responsible for the collapsed school. "Whoever is responsible for the building should pay with their life," said another, comparing the building materials used in the structure to tofu.

As the crowd grew, the sound of weeping became a chorus. Women sobbed, and men drew deeply on cigarettes as tears trickled down their cheeks. Mourners lit candles and incense in the wreckage. Some women were so distraught they were carried away by family and friends. A girl recovering from head injuries stood holding a picture of her dead brother, a faraway look on her face. A hastily set up sound system broadcast a dirge. The crack of fireworks cut through the din.

Notably missing from the memorial service were any representatives of the school or the local government, who in most crises would be expected to attempt to console the mourners.

Instead, two trucks arrived as the service got under way and began spraying down the ruins. One of them started to work at the far end of the building, and began moving toward the mourners. A driver, dressed in white, got out and tried unsuccessfully to shoo away the mourners. At one point, the two trucks took up positions on both sides of the crowd, with their powerful sprayers pointed at the center, as if they might start work in spite of the funeral. Eventually they backed out and drove away.

After 300 to 400 people had gathered, including several dozen Chinese journalists, the mood turned more businesslike. One parent took the microphone to organize mourners by class of students. He also announced that the group was gathering the names of the affected families so that they could speak with one voice in demanding justice and accountability from the government.

The collapse of Juyuan school was not an isolated incident in Dujiangyan, a city about one hour's drive from Chengdu that suffered profound damage in the earthquake. Though it was farther from the epicenter than many other towns, the city’s schools fared particularly badly.

At the Juyuan memorial, a man named Yan beseeched journalists to cover a similar event next week to commemorate students at the Xinjian Primary School, where he said his 10-year-old daughter died in a similar collapse along with more than 300 other children. He said local officials lied when they reported 20 deaths in the school.

Yan, too, wants someone held accountable for the collapse of the school that led to his daughter’s death. He says that families of victims have been offered a total of 32,000 yuan (about $4,500) in "comfort money" from the central government, the provincial government and the local government.

"None of us has touched this money," he says. "What we want is justice."

China builds there houses with paper and brick.  Buildings are built at there cheepest.  I feel for them and hope they get help.
What happened is so terrible but I'm curious, how long was it shaking and did the school/s ever have any emergency procedures for the kids to evacuate and was there any time for them to evacuate?  It is obvious no one left the building since they were crushed inside it
It's so hard looking at the photos of the suffering parents, and pictures of the beautiful children that are now gone.  My heart and prayers go out to them.
The governmental officials, inspectors and building contractors have regulations to follow. If this was not done, all guilty parties must be held accountable. To do so is not revenge. It is justice and what is required to attain good government. Anyone holding a position of responsibility is accountable for his or her actions. If an individual is derelict with respect to his or her duty, then that individual should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. That is what is require in any society that is governed by the rule of law. China should strive to be a place where the rule of law is upheld. Let's see if it does.

My prayers go out to these parents, i can imagine the pain they are going thru.
My prayers and sadness go out to these people, but the Chinese are great people and will soon come back from this tragedy! The Chinese government should do much more to help these people and Punish the contactors that used shoddy materials to build these schools, they all need to be punished severly for the cause of how all of this has affected these poor people lives and even though they might bounce back, the pain and lingering for that child lingers on.
God bless them and give them the strength they need to overcome this trial on our lifes journey. The children are all in a much better place now and at peace!
Earthquakes have happen for ever there is no excuse for lack of proper building technique now or when the schools were built.
When I heard that none of the parents had touched the comfort money but wanted justice I saw love.  I don't believe these parents want to blame, they are going to go the gammut of accusational energies anyways due to their very deep and personal losses. They made a very good point when they stated that the surrounding buildings were in fact still standing.  To disregard them under the conditions; natural disaster or not is to devalue their life and the life they gave their children.  If the govt. were at all compassionate and with any intelligent committee members they would address the mourners and at the very least move to establish better building codes for any future buildings that children may occupy.  Please remember that we have a vast amount of knowledge today and have know how on better ways to build in fault areas.  Ask any engineer what they think and outside of the date and age of the building and the codes that were in effect at the time of building, I believe they would whole heartedly agree with me. Hopefully the parents will pull funds and sue for new legislation.  Not that I have any idea how that would work in China but thay definately have an audience and the sway of public oppinion to support that movement.
What a horrible situation for anyone to be in, and to think that there are thousands in that one area in the world going through it at the same time is just heart wrenching. Maybe now the Chinese locals will find a voice to rise up against their oppressive government. The leaders there enforced the one child only policy, claiming it was "what is best" for their people, and look where it has gotten them. Thousands of people's only children have died, along with them the hope of continuing the bloodline, passing their family name to future generations... it's enough to drive a parent insane.
I lived in China for 6 years and as a whole the public building is shoddy. the private sector very much 1st class. Shows the true value system of communism-value system over people-sad-sad-sad.
Demoncrats want us into socialism like China. Don't vote Obama or your mama and you will suffer.
American, Texas, USA ? More likely Chinese Government official.  He cannot even spell correctly, and his grammer shows that he is not from United States.  Typical communist propaganda.  How come the other buildings did not fail like the school buildings?  By the way  California survived much larger quakes than 5.0
I am very heart sickened about these poor families losing there children that is a very terrible tragedy to endure, god bless each and everyone of you in your time of sorrow, as one viewer said, corruption is all over the world, and I hope that these parents united and find the answers that they are seeking, Revenge is ot the answer and there is no amount and I mean NO AMOUNT of money that can pay anyone off for the loss of a child.
looks like a wake up call to Chinese people revolution...I will pray for you.....
As a father of two children, I can truly feel the pain of these parents in China.  The fact that the lives of these children was caused by the collapse of the school building is unbearable.  Even though the powerful quake    could cause anything building to fall, the images of the school where nothing remain standing proves that there were no structural re-enforcement.  These parents have the right to call for the officials that were responsible because they were somehow involved in the construction and the inspection of the school buildings.  However, justice should be seek after all the survivors are cared for to reduce further casualties.
To "American - Texas, USA"
Why do you repeatedly refer to earthquakes (or "quakes") as "quicks"? In addition, you commented that you doubt that many "...Californian buildings could survive a 5.0 magnitude quick." You are wrong -- the majority of buildings in CA HAVE survived more than 1 "quake" exceeding 5.0 magnitude from the early 1970s to the present...and what does this have to do with China anyway???
This breaks my heart reading this, as a mother I could not imagine. My prayers go out to you all.
I can't believe that some people like Steve won't pass up even this incident as an opportunity of instigatgion.
I only have one question for those who lost their child can they have another? I know that it wont make up for their loss and I know that nothing can. But their has to be some good that can come from this. My grand-parents always said for every disater their is some good that comes from it. In this case it could be the corruption that is now coming to light I don't know. My heart goes out to those who have lost their child, brother, sister, nice whoever. God Bless the childern and the parents.
Its so sad that all these parents lost there children, but you have to also remeber the children that have lost there parents, so its should be fate that the orphans go to the couples that have lost there children and give the orphaned children a new lease of life , as it will help them and the parents of the lost children of china.
I am sure if they check the quality of the concrete used in these buildings, they will soon realize that the mix had far less cement - much weaker mix - than required  by China's building codes. Very similar to what happened in 1985 in Mexico City: corrupt contractors colluded with government officials cut down on cement and pocketed the money, and similarly most of the buildings that felt down where public buildings - e.g. schools, hospitals, government offices - built during the most corrupt years of the PRI - Partido Revolucionario Institucional.
Let us continue to keep the Chinese people in our thoughts and prayers as the after shocks continue to cause even more death and destruction.  Perhaps with the entire world looking at China due to the forthcoming Olympics, their government will do what is necessary to help their people now and for the future and build all schools and business to protect them.
1000 teenagers died at a school!
i can't breath reading this article

My father actually help build Burma and the roads to Kunning. I have never acknowledged the new regime.

I actually believe the dragons have been release upon the city because the GODS are angry.  They were living in so much oppression, no one really knows the truth of the story.

Stop the Olympics.    While I mourn for these children and there families.   I KNOW FOR A FACT THE CHILDREN ARE FREE AND IN A BETTER PLACE.

I AM PRAYING FOR POSITIVE CHANGE FOR ALL OF THE VICTIMS of the cyclone and the quake.

GOD IS WATCHING US ALL
Parents are urged to "pray and pray and pray some more. God will fight your battles...."
If there is a god, he obviously allowed the quake to happen, so why would he change his mind and later fight your battles?
When will people realize that there is no god, and that they should be fighting their own battles? Don't be weak and pass your responsibilities on to mythological gods!
And stop blaming others whenever anything goes wrong! How can any building stand up to an 8 magnitude quake? Of course it was a tragedy, but praying won't help what has already occurred!
I am not unsympathetic. I, too, know what it is like to lose a child, so I share your losses.

There is no pain that matches the loss of a child. NONE.  You will search the world over for an explanation, and you will get none.  Eventually you grow to live along with the pain, but nobody should have the right to tell you how to grieve.  Comforting one another is the only answer, because revenge only serves one thing and that is to continue to destroy the one that is mourning.
I am so sorry for the loss of these children and the devastation that this earthquake brought to their land.  I read as much as I can and it is heartbreaking.....so much sadness.  I am praying for all of you everyday.  God Bless
Surely...we can't remain without compassion for our humanity for much longer. "Where there is no Love...there is death". I say this because our leaders play "politics", while our women and children are torn apart.
"I wish the mountains would fall on me".
Parents, remember the children are nestled in the arms of God. He needed more angels maybe to help sing and they are happily doing that. Le them look down and see you being strong. God bless all of you.
Reading articles like this and seeing those pictures makes my eyes water up, my heart goes out to these people.  As a regular visitor to China, IMO life in general is not valued as highly as it is in the US; however, parent’s love and concern for their children is valued more than it is here.

Governmental corruption there is really, really bad but you can get into trouble if you complain publicly.  This will be hard for the government to sweep under the rug though.  I agree with whoever said the focus of China is expansion at the expense of safety to its citizens.  I’ve seen 5-6 year old 30 story apartment buildings that the middle is visibly sinking (as much as a full story).  Visit any major city in China for the day.  When you get back to your hotel room and blow your nose, it’s black.
I agree 1 million percent with the straight to the point comment made by Steve St. of Helens, OR...unfortunately, the people don't stand a chance with this politburo Govt'; therefore, I think its a sign from a 'higher power' directly to Red China's Govt'; unfortunately, its the innocent lives that are taken.
My heart and prayers go to these parents. Hopefully this will make Chinas government go in and retrofit the other schools not built to earthquake codes and hospitals regardless of cost. I also hope after their pain (which will never end i know) but perhaps they will go on to adopt and give their love to another child. These seem like parents filled with love for their lost children and I hope that love is redirected in a positive manner. Perhaps the government will allow these parents to have another baby.

"There, but for the Grace of God, go I"

Remembering the Families in our prayers
What amazes me is how we have narrowed our view to just the "children". What about all the thousands adult sons and daughters that were killed as well. Don't you think the surviving parents feel the same? We should be praying for everyone. Anger is always a part of grieving. This was a natural disaster, stop pointing fingers and help with the healing.
I think this drives home the need for freedom of the press in China and consequently the need to boycott the Beijing Olympics.  The only way things will change for Chinese people is if they can hold their government accountable for its actions.  However, as long as free speech is forbidden, they have no means of fighting back, and these kind of tradgedies, and those far worse, like wrongful imprisonment, will continue.
To "American, Texas, USA": yes you can blame the contractors for a poor shoddy (and probably corrupt) job. Most schools, businesses, and homes do not flatten like a pancake. Structures rarely, if built is the last 20 years, flatten out completely. No, something tells me when a building with approximately 1,000 students (not counting staff and faculty) goes under like it was built on sand, someone is culpable for their actions.
It is sad. Nothing i can say. the building quality issue exists everywhere in the world. It is a time for us to inspect the building quality related to us around the world. Building quality is one of the most difficult things to monitor and control even you have very strict building code. Construction is one of the most corrupted industries in the world. Investors always cut cost and builders & constractors always try the best to maximize the profit as much as possible in any possible slot. Once everythign is covered, it is so difficult to judge the quality of the building against the building code. It exists in evry country.
I am so very sad that all these people have lost their lives, their childrens lives along with other family members.  I am not surprised by the corruption. Anytime ANY government puts their fingers in the pie greed and corruption abound.  Just check America out
Words can't be written to express the sadness.  My heart goes out to each and every parent of the children who perished as well as all the others.  For the country, I have only good thoughts.
How grateful to God I am having all five of my children with me this moment(ages 7-28).  I take not one day for granted.  I thank Him every morning and evening before I sleep.  Losing one would be a joyless, lifeless world for me. My heart hurts for these poor families and hopefully their anger towards their government will help build safer schools in the future.
peace of God be with all of the people in China. Your love one never be replace in your heart. He or She is always there! We just crying with you and praying with you and shouting with you for the answer. God be with you all.
The destruction of this earthquake is overwhelming and the death of the students in this ONE school and surrounding areas(death) is outrageous, to say the least. TO LOSE A CHILD is awful, to lose a family is worse, to lose a CITY is even worse..in Myanmar(cyclone) entire CITIES were washed away--no on to bury or be found. WE live in a world of awful TIMES...good times too, but AWFUL just seems to get worse. America has city destroying Tornadoes this year that are outrageous too. One of our Christian Songwriters and singers, Steven Curtis Chapman adopted a Chinese little girl..well three. ONE, the youngest was ran over BY ACCIDENT via SUV vehicle in their OWN DRIVEWAY.  Life happens and it is sometimes GOOD and sometimes BAD...It sounds like the School was built below standard, which would give CAUSE for proper anger and justice. NO, it won't bring the kids back, but in the FUTURE--hope the Chinese LAWS demand for better building.  May God grant new avenues of parenting for those who have lose THE CHILDREN and FAMILY members-teachers that were probably in the school, etc.  As I drove thru the Blue Ridge Mountains the other day-awesome the CREATION of GOD to me!!! WE all need to do what we can to LOVE and HELP each other...and ADOPTING the nation of Myanmar/China/?? in our prayers right now and any way WE can help...WILL BE a good thing for mankind. Where trajedy happens, LOVE can happen too.......GOD grant them arms of love from those around them.....Being a parent of 3 in college, I can see the anger happening, SINCE the bldg was NOT up to par. EVEN an up to par bldg might not have collapsed, but AROUND the bldgs..OTHER ones were ok..SO>>>>>shame, shame on LEADERSHIP in the BLDG...GOING Cheap and inexpensive is NOT ALWAYS the right way.........My Prayers go out to all....tornado victims in America and Cyclone/Hurricane victims STILL in New Orleans and Myanmar, the ones just washed away..and CHINA..with aftershocks...all getting worse instead of better........GOD BE WITH OUR FELLOW MAN/LADIES/CHILDREN right now......as we mourn and grive with them and then DO what we can............................
Once again, however trajic, this was an earthquake of 8.0 magnitude. The lose of life is painful, but will finding someone to blame solve this? America also has suffered great natural disasters, can we always blame the government?
My heart goes out to the parents of the children and to all the families in China who lost loved ones in this terrible disaster.
these people should have help they seem another world away but they are on our world
God Be with the mothers and fathers in China and all the people devastated by this terrible disaster.
As sad as it all is (and I do sympathize with all), the fact is that there is corruption and dishonesty throughout all of China.  Everyone seems to be on the take to make a quick yuan.  I can only imagine that most of those mourners are involved in some sort of not-quite-legit business or activity of their own.  It's just the way it is in China (I know, I have been living here for 5 years now).  The government (like most around the world) really doesn't look out for the little people.  There's not enough checks and balances in the provinces so there are little "lords" (thugs, basically) everywhere doing what they want, when they want, to whomever they want without fear of reprisal.  A little bribe to a higher up works wonders.  The thing is, pretty much everyone in China has resigned themselves to "that's the way it is" and either looks the other way or joins in the corruption themselves.  Now, once this great tragedy occurs, they want a piece of the pie themselves.  Why not take action, Chinese citizens, BEFORE another huge crisis comes along?
Now's the time to throw off their chains. Only then will they have justice.
Capitalism+tyranny leads to facism, not democracy.
With the loss of so many children, I do not want to ever hear the term "Guardian Angel" ever again. There is NO such thing. Where the hell his GOD when this crap occurs? Guess he's busy somewhere else! Thanks for letting us humans down again GOD.
Unless you lost a child you have no idea what it means I know how it feels and my heart goes out to those parents, God bless you all! There will be justice!
