Crying for the children, and for justice

DUJIANGYAN, China – Releasing a tidal wave of emotion and anger, hundreds of grieving parents and sympathizers gathered at a pile of rubble that was once the Juyuan Middle School on Tuesday to memorialize the nearly 1,000 teenagers who died when the building collapsed in the May 12 earthquake.

The heart-rending ceremony also offered the victims’ parents an opportunity to demand justice.

A woman clutching the portrait of her daughter, Dong Yan, cursed the people in charge of building the school, which collapsed even though all the buildings around it remained standing. Like most of the people in the crowd, she believes local corruption was the reason for the poor construction.

during the May 12 earthquake in China.

"We want the truth to come out and the corrupt officials to be punished," she said between sobs. "These corrupt players are the ones who have caused us so much misery."

Banners hung across the destroyed building for the occasion were more blunt: "Get even for the deaths of the Juyuan students," read one. Another demanded harsh punishment for the "murderers" responsible for the collapsed school. "Whoever is responsible for the building should pay with their life," said another, comparing the building materials used in the structure to tofu.

As the crowd grew, the sound of weeping became a chorus. Women sobbed, and men drew deeply on cigarettes as tears trickled down their cheeks. Mourners lit candles and incense in the wreckage. Some women were so distraught they were carried away by family and friends. A girl recovering from head injuries stood holding a picture of her dead brother, a faraway look on her face. A hastily set up sound system broadcast a dirge. The crack of fireworks cut through the din.

Notably missing from the memorial service were any representatives of the school or the local government, who in most crises would be expected to attempt to console the mourners.

Instead, two trucks arrived as the service got under way and began spraying down the ruins. One of them started to work at the far end of the building, and began moving toward the mourners. A driver, dressed in white, got out and tried unsuccessfully to shoo away the mourners. At one point, the two trucks took up positions on both sides of the crowd, with their powerful sprayers pointed at the center, as if they might start work in spite of the funeral. Eventually they backed out and drove away.

After 300 to 400 people had gathered, including several dozen Chinese journalists, the mood turned more businesslike. One parent took the microphone to organize mourners by class of students. He also announced that the group was gathering the names of the affected families so that they could speak with one voice in demanding justice and accountability from the government.

The collapse of Juyuan school was not an isolated incident in Dujiangyan, a city about one hour's drive from Chengdu that suffered profound damage in the earthquake. Though it was farther from the epicenter than many other towns, the city’s schools fared particularly badly.

At the Juyuan memorial, a man named Yan beseeched journalists to cover a similar event next week to commemorate students at the Xinjian Primary School, where he said his 10-year-old daughter died in a similar collapse along with more than 300 other children. He said local officials lied when they reported 20 deaths in the school.

Yan, too, wants someone held accountable for the collapse of the school that led to his daughter’s death. He says that families of victims have been offered a total of 32,000 yuan (about $4,500) in "comfort money" from the central government, the provincial government and the local government.

"None of us has touched this money," he says. "What we want is justice."

The loss of children in the quick, particular if it's the only child of a family, is heart-breaking and painful. I understand the parent's anger and desire to blame someone for it. A friend of my here in America had relative that lost a child to swimming pool. After period of extreme sadness, they started to blame each other.

We also must not forget that it was 8.0 magnitude quick. How many buildings could survive that level of earth shaking, no matter how well the building code is followed? It is highly questionable. Even in Japan which is very keen on building earth-quick resistant buildings AND had the money and technology to do so still saw a lot of buildings damaged during the Kobe quick. I often go to California where buildings and roads look so worn-out compare to Texas. I doubt many of the Californian buildings could survive a 5.0 magnitude quick.

My heart and sympathy go to the parents who lost their children and to all Chinese people.
I am so sorry for the deaths of these young and innocent school children.  I am even saddened deeper when i read that corruption and greed, could have made this natural disaster worse, via shoddy constructiion and cost cutting.  I would say to the parents to pray, pray and pray some more.  God will fight your battles.............
China fortitude!

contractors cheat on materials all the time around the world.  They are greedy
These poor people deserve some kind of justice for their children.
True, what happened was very sad. However, people have to understand that these schools were build many years ago. There is no "murderer" per se. Back then, they just have a different set of building codes. Besides, back in the days, China had to erect many buildings to house many people in a very short period of time. They are currently in the process of abolish old buildings for the newer buildings. Unfortunately, the rebuilding didn't happen early enough for these people. Truly a tragedy.
My condelences to those who have lost their loving children. God bless you all! There will be justice!
Why is it that entities always think money will compensate for loss?  Money cannot compensate for what these people have lost or for what they are feeling.  Perhaps knowing that bringing those to justice for building poor buildings may, in time, bring some solace to their lives.  At least it would be a start.  If there has been corruption in the building of the school, then those involved need to be brought to justice.
You can punish the corrupt officials and people involved but for such a natural disaster...pointing fingers now will only serve as a vent for anger rather than closure which wouldn't be appropriate at this time.
This is more like a time for mourning.

There are many others out there who have lost their love ones but are still working hard to help others in similar situations. There is still a lot to do for people who are facing danger from floods and other aftershocks as well.
I am so sad and feel outraged at the fact that there isnt more done for these families that are grieving for the loss of their children. Why isnt there being more done to aid in their suffering? Are children not thought of as important enough to ensure their safety? When does greed end? At the cost of these lives and families rocked to the core by the devestation? How many of the officials lost their children in these schools?
wow...how sad...my prayers are with all those family that lost their loved ones...especially a child...that must be one of the worse pain that a parent must endure...
"Daisy" please read the article, before offering an  opinion, even though you DO have the right; The school building WAS new, the older school buildings SURROUNDING the new one that collapsed were still standing. That's why they're pissed off.
Use the blood of your children to gain the nerve needed to over throw your communist GOV.. Declare "open season" on your GOV..
You have all made very true statements and comments.  As a mother, I cannot imagine what people are feeling, and my heart aches as I am deeply saddened.  I know that our words can never comfort them in these times. The many families will be in my prayers.
on paper their building codes are very tough, but the same mentality that produces and sells tainted toys, drugs and counterfeits  has led to this tragedy. greed and a culture of corruption fueled by  gov't indifference to others

i'm sad for the families, but this was bound to happen
The fact, as reported in the article, that all the buildings around the school remained standing implies that either the engineering, the construction, or the materials used were substandard.  Schools tend to be constucted when the buildings in the area are constructed so I believe it is unlikely that the school is older than the surrounding stucture.

The likely cause for this school and many others like it to have collapsed is faulty engineering and/or low grade materials.

China has focused on growth at the expense of protecting its citizens from danger for several decades.  Pollution is rampant, building standards are low, life is cheap.

I feel for these parents.  To lose one's only child is terrible.

It is not as though engineering failures happen only in China, though.  Here in New Orleans, 80% of hurricane Katrina's devastion was caused by the Corps of Engineers levee failures.

Unless you lost a child you have no idea what it means . Others have lost loved ones too can only come from someone who hasn't lost a child . I know how it feels and my heart goes out to those parents and I hope they can open their hearts to those orphans the earthquake left behind .
Losing a child (the only one) is probably the worst pain a human being can suffer. It's really heart breaking to know 1000 parents are suffering this right now; I hope, in some way, get over this, because words are not enough to bring comfort into their lives right now.
Regaurdless of when these building were built there were standards for this type of construction. An investigation needs to be conducted to determine if the building were constructed to the standard of the time the building was constructed. An investigation will determine if substandard building materials were used. If so then the contractor(s) and building offical(s) responsible for these building should be held accountable for thier actions. Simply put if you build it yours and if you inspect it it is your responsibility.
I watched KTSF Chinese news and learned that a building expert who surveyed all the collapsed schools concluded that about 7 of 10 school buildings are not conforming to the safety code established at the time of construction. Some of the problems stemmed from the design phase where  check and approval weren't done at all. There are indeed someone to take the blame, and more importantly to make the corrections.
My heart is broken for those parents that lost their children - what a tragedy. My deepest sympathies are extended to them. I hope that if there has been some questionable cost-cutting or corruption that the wrong-doers can be brought to justice. I also hope that the parents realize that while it cannot possibly compensate for the loss of their child, it may turn heads that looked the other way and allowed the corruption to seep through. Revenge and money aren't the answers, however.
As tragic as this earthquake was, why is it people look to blame "someone" for the tragedy?  Why do people look for compensation due to the death of a son or daughter or other family member when its no ones fault?  If you are wanting to sue to get that big heap of money maybe you should have thought about taking out insurance on your kid.  Will sueing bring back your child?  This is what you call a "NATURAL DISSASTER."  This is nobody's fault that buildings collapsed!
For the people that are saying that 1) "It was an 8.0 quake, buildings fall". While true, why did the buildings all around the school not fall? Think about that. 2)"people have to understand that these schools were build many years ago". Wrong! Some of the students were moved to these newer schools and they fell while the older schools were still standing. You can find the article on that on msnbc.
I pray these families find peace and comfort in this really sad time. God is in contoll of all of this!  He is a just God! None of us really know what we'd do until we suffered such a loss. Our hearts and prayers are with all the victums!
Money cannot compensate for the loss of lives. But what can then? I don't see anything wrong in offering some sort of compensation.

Sure if the U.S. agrees to take 300 million immigrants from China, there will probably be no need for the one-child policy in China.

Corrupt ones should be punished, whether the buildings collapsed or not. Offering some compensation to those families is better than offering nothing.
The point made, American, Texas, USA, that you were not reading, is that buildings around the school stayed up, and did not fall.  This was not near the epicenter. And why if buildings around it stood, were they newer than the school? They should be the first thing rebuilt, or reinforced.
And all of you and your "God bless" them. Screw that! They do not follow your god over there, and if this great blessings your God does, I am sure they can do WITHOUT IT!! Yeah really blessed them with the death of their only child for 100s of parents!
My heart hurts when I  see and read about all the suffering in China I being praying  for all the survivors, my God be with them.
“How many of the officials lost their children in these schools? ”
The answer is "quite many".And there exists another fact that nearly all the officials in one county couldn't survive during the earthquake.Actually, this earthquake is the common sorrow for all the Chinese.
Rest in peace,my those fellow compatriots having passed away!I know your spirit and souls would shine forever in the paradise.
I am sadden by this lost for parents in China.
Some efforts should be made to provide Therapy for these families to help them to cope. May they find peace in theirLives. My heart goes out to them.
How much more can these Chinese people take?  Is America sending them enough relief?  (I realize our government was slow to act during Katrina but we can't punish other countries by holding back aid.)

The Chinese need our prayers as well as relief-we are all one in this world.

God bless us everyone,
Annette
My heart goes to the children and the parents!!
My heart goes out to the Chineese poeple. They are brave, corageous people. I send my blessings and deepest condolences on their loss. May they find peace and harmony from this tragedy.
Greed--a human trait that effects all nationalities.

Altruism--a human trait that the world needs more of.

God bless the people of China in their time of need.

I am so sorry for these people and the loss of their children. Nothing could be worse. They are so poor & the children are all they have. I say take the money & demand justice too. We in the USA too have suffered as a result of shodding engineering & materials & poisioned environment, so the rich can keep getting richer. I am very poor myself & could only donate $10.00 I wish it could be more.
It's a very sad thing that this tragedy happened. I send out condolences to all families affected.  But the real issue is that this has happened more than once and not once was there any urgency to try to correct the problem in other schools after the first incident, why not the other?  The government knew that the building was old and not up to date with inspections and ordinances.  Why not condemn it and renovate it? Or better yet...build a new school? I can't help but to think but because of the rapidly growing population of that country plus the vile way the government handles is affiars...wouldn't it make sense to 'knock' off the younger generations to 'control' population? I know that is wrong to think, but these are corrupt and disastrous times...anything is almost likely to happen...
Wouldn't it be nice, if all those women could go and have one more child to replace the only child they were allowed to have.  But, thanks to their government, most of them are steralized after the first and will spend the rest of their lives mourning their only child.  Also, think about it... how many do we kill here in America, each day, because of embarassement or inconvienience?  My heart goes out to them and my Prayers to God for their comfort and our repentence.
I was in the great Alaska quake of 1964 which was very similar - very few buildings collapsed. In Anchorage proper there was only one death. It is total bullshit that those schools collapsed while other buildings stood. While revenge might not be the answer a more open society is.

My heartfelt condolences to the parents of the children that were killed in this horrible natural diaster. No one should be blamed for this. Revenge will not bring the children back. Just because one building stands and the other falls has nothing to do with it. It is a natural diaster. Just like two people can stand next to one another and one is struck by lightening and the other is not. Unfortunetly things happen and we don't know why. My advice would be to pray for your children and pray for peace of mind. Somethings just are not in our hands...............
Finally I found the report I've been looking for. Here in China the CCTV and some major online new outlets haven't(probably never will)reported such incidents. It's understandable that they're trying not to cause instability at this time. However, I hope people will not let those bastards get away with this once the situation is under control.I dare say over 90% of government officials in Sichuan as well as in other provinces of China are corrupt. CORRUPTION at local level, rather than a somewhat autocratic central government, is what anger the Chinese people most.
The families effected by this quake are in my thoughts and prayers.  I cannot imagine the grief of the parents that lost their children.  I wish there was something I could do for them!!  I as a parent know the love of a child and could not imagine life without them! We all need to work together and help rebuild their country.
God Bless all of those going thru this pain and Suffering in china, I could'nt even begin to imagine how this never ending nightmare would play out here in america. My heart goes out to all of those lost. I'm truly sorry. you are in our thoughts and prayers.
to the "American in Texas":

We had a 7.3 here in San Francisco about 20 years ago. Maybe you heard about it? The only major collapse was the freeway, resulting in most of the 80 or so deaths. Although a lot this city's architecture was built in the early 1900's, it not only has withstood the test of time,  but is certainly more beautiful than any thing Texas, new or old. Guess we know why W is the Prez. Long live the Alamo!!!! or whats left of it.
I can't imagine the despair and hurt to the depth of these people. It is such a tragegy that should be investigated and the cause be known so that it would never happen again. In addition, the families need answers, they need closure, they need help, they need our prayers and they need restitution.
There are so many issues involved here - faulty construction, loss of a child, 8.0 earthquake, the devestation of life as these people knew it.  Each will grieve in his or her own way and forcing some culpability may help the whole process, but at the end of the day when justice has been served, payments have been made, buildings have been reconstructed - these poor people have lost their children and there is nothing that can compensate for that loss.  They deserve our heartfelt prayers.
I think it comes down to people being honest, if we assume the government paid for the building and hired contractors to do the work, then the official responsible for the inspection if honest should have known the construction was not done properly.
The communist government and the capitalistic government suffer from the same disease.
Does anyone remember when we paid 300 dollars for a toilet seat or when they audited the pentagon and could not account for 20% of the expenditure?
it is the workers, the people who did the work, and the engineers and superviser who should be held accountable.
When a society regardless of its political ideology becomes greedy and dishonest everyone suffers.
As someone said ,I looked inside myself and I have seen the enemy.
I am so saddened for lives lost and loved ones suffering.  My deepest sympathies and prayers go out to each and every one of you.  May God mend your hearts and may you find some comfort in knowing there are people across the world who weep for you.  May God bless and keep you in his ever loving arms.
