Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

Israel's logo for its 60th anniversary harks back to the good old days – an innocent boy in shorts romping with a variation of the Israeli flag unfurling behind him.

But you can't please everyone. One orthodox Jewish member of parliament trashed the symbol, saying the child looks "frumpy and should get a haircut."

That could sum up the reservations of many Israelis about their country as its leaders prepare to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

Festivities being met with a yawn
President Bush will be coming later in the month for part of the festivities, reportedly with about 800 of his closest friends and bodyguards. And a dozen other leaders from countries as diverse as Rwanda, Burkina Faso and Latvia, will attend too, along with the world's A-list of party stars Tony Blair, Henry Kissinger and Mikhail Gorbachev. Paris Hilton will be absent, to the chagrin of ordinary Israelis, who appear to be treating the party with a yawn.

For most people Independence Day on Thursday will proceed as usual – children spraying each other with string foam and hitting each other on the head with squeaky plastic hammers, a violent custom that apparently goes back to the days of pre-plastic Persia; barbeques on every square foot of public space; and car drivers flying the Israeli flag. It's a raucous annual celebration of what Israelis see as one of the great achievements of the twentieth century: After 2,000 years, the return of the Jews to the land of Zion.

The ensuing conflict with the Palestinians over the right to the land, the tarnishing of the Jewish dream in the face of brute reality, the wake-up call of the need to survive, none of these harsh facts detract from the central achievement, that a persecuted people never gave up on their dream and 2,000 years after their expulsion, and dispersal around the globe, gathered together again, revived their dead language, and created one of the world's most exciting countries.

A land of contradictions
I've reported from Israel for almost half its lifetime. What always strikes me is the contradiction between the glory of its existence and the mundane reality of what it takes to exist. One friend, an archaeologist and former Mossad agent, summed up his varied interests saying that his two worlds complement each other perfectly. In one he collects and analyses data to understand the past, in the other he collects and analyses data to understand the future.

For me, that sums up the central dilemma of Israel, where the past determines the future: how to exist as a light unto nations, according to its own high standard, in a region where, just to survive, it has adopted the harsh methods of its neighborhood, so successfully that it is known as the neighborhood bully.

Israel is a land of contradictions: a desert that reaches the sea; snow-capped mountains with ski resorts two hours away from sun-drenched beaches; Jerusalem, the heart of three great religions, where the prayers never end, less than an hour from the fleshpots of Tel Aviv, the city that never sleeps. Centers of hi-tech and innovation alongside the greatest biblical scholars in the world, a powerful military force pitted daily against home-made rockets, a vibrant economy with one of the world’s strongest currencies and one of the greatest gaps between rich and poor in the developed world.

It's a head-spinning place, and all the more vibrant for it. Few first-time visitors leave without saying something like: "I had no idea what a great place Israel is."

But few visit the 20 foot high wall and fence that is supposed to keep out suicide bombers, or visit a Jewish settlement on the West Bank, or see the fence around Gaza.

For Israel is a bipolar place. One reality exists alongside another: war and peace, love and hate, pain and joy.

Israel at 60 is a fascinating and challenging country, unlike any other.

Considering what the Jews went through from '39-'45, I honestly think they deserve Israel, even at the expense of the Palestinians. And even though Israel has given up a lot, the Arabs still want the Jews dead. So I have no sympathy for the Palestinians..they deserve what they get!!
The sixty year anniversary in Israel sounds like a blast!
The "poor Palestinians" are not displaced.  The Arabs decided to "throw the Jews into the Sea" when Israel became a State and their leaders told them to run to other countries so they could kill off the Jews and then they could come back and claim everything for themselves.  So they ran off....  and guess what?  The Israelis fended off the attack and kept the land that was originally theirs from before biblical times.  The "poor Palestinians"?  Maybe if they hadn't run away their situation would be different?  And why doesn't anyone ever mention that the Arabs who stayed behind are now citizens of Israel?
Israel celebrating what? The most brutal system of apartheid? The land they stole through terrorism and murder ? Does anyone in the right mind think this system won't collapse ? What do you all think of human rights and the continued bloodshed, do not turn a blind eye to this heinous injustice.
You people just don't get it do you.  The Jews were able to reclaim their land not as a result of military mite, but as a result of God.  He promised that land to Abraham in the Old Testimate and although the Jewish people have been displaced many times as a result of their sin and disobedience, God has always kept his promise to return them to their land.  Celebrate o Israel your land and many blessings you are Gods chosen people!
unfortunately who ever has the most guns will always win. the ottoman empire ruled the entire middle east prior to ww1 going back thousand of years. who was the last president of isreal, saudi arabia, iraq, lebonon, etc prior to 1918. the arabs lost wwi along with turkey and are paying the price. it's no different that india/pakistan, mexico/usa, ireland/uk and a hundred others. make peace or war but cut the holier than thou crap.
Who gave the Israeli people the right to take what was the Palestinian's? Sure, they were persecuted for many centuries, but wasn't it that their god made them do so (because he wasn't happy with them)? Sorry, but that piece of land was the Palestinian's land, and if the Israelis are allowed to just take over, they deserve to be persecuted.
What we tend to forget is that the conflict between Jews and Muslims has been going on for centuries, with no resolution.  They are half-brothers by lineage, and fight as mortal enemies on a continual basis with no purpose other than senseless hatred very similar to Hitler-type aggression, with blame resting on both sides.  We as the US are negligent in establishing and supporting the state of Israel except for its use as a buffer against the prejudice and hatred of its Arab / Muslim neighbors.  It is a good strategic move to maintain a strong military there, but it also begs the question: Would we (US) see as much hatred from Muslims had we not supported the stealing of land to create anew the state of Israel in 1948?  At this stage in world history, neither side has much merit.  Both Israel and the hostile Arab states are akin to children that simply won't stop fighting until you make them, either by separation or harsh punishment.  We, as a PC nation, no longer have a firm grasp on the realities and impacts of such action, and it is best we abstain from interfering in the juvenile actions of people who have not advanced sociologically since the BC to AD conversion.
Israel is so amazing, in only 60 years all they have done and accomplished is amazing.  I know of no other nation on earth who has done anything like that.  Congratulations, it's an amazing place.
For anyone interested in a non biased book about the independance was in Israel read Oh! Jerusalem. Ir is available in Borders bookstores
When talking about displacement, one should remember that it was the Arabs who told the Palestinian Arabs to leave the mandated area, that once the Palestinian Jews were "pushed into the sea," they'd be able to return to their homes victorious.  This didn't happen, and the Palestinian Arabs have been kept in the squalor of the camps ever since.  If the Arab countries really wanted to do some good, they'd: 1) recognize Israel's right to exist; 2) let Israel live in peace amongst the nations there; and 3) absorb the Arabs into their countries.

Also, consider this: Israel is the ONLY country in the world that has been forced to give back land gained in war against its enemies.
Its telling that the palestinians call this day the "catastrophe". Its not without irony that the persecuted now do the same unto others.

I bet none of you "tourists" ventured into Hebrons. Doesnt that look like a nice neighbourhood in that picture, no wonder those people look so happy to have stolen such a nice place.

Fletchers' article is spot on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The two minute sirens are very emotional all the way around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!                          Todays also my birthday I am 60 also..
I hope I can say or e-mail this in 60 years when we are both 120 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I never realized that Islam was 500 years older than Christianity...get your facts straight "Whatever" from PA.
The other fact to understand is that the Palestinians have had many chances for statehood, including in 1947 when the UN granted the west bank of the Jordan River for Israel and the east bank of the Jordan River for Palestine.  The Jews accepted the offer and the Arab World rejected the offer.  Those Arabs that remained in Israel were granted citizenship; those that left became refugees in the Arab World - no Arab country wanted them - not Egypt, not Saudi Arabia, not Iran, not Lebanon, not Syria.....
Israel has a history of working to achieve peace with its neighbors - Israel and Egypt have had peace for 30 years and Israel and Jordan have peace on their border.
What have the Palestinians done to achieve peace? Absolutely nothing!
Israel is a wonderful country as Mr. Fletcher explained.  Everyone should visit to have a better understanding of what is real and what is created for the media.  I've been to Israel 10 times and look forward to going again in the near future!
They need to find a way to live with the Palestinians.  For the sake of all.  They were in prison camps and it appears to me as though they don't see the they have the Palestinians living in maddness.  Come on Israel, do the right thing.

Happy 60th Isreal!
It's unfortunate that so many of you commenters who state Israel's horrible treatment of the displaced Palestinians, have learned their history from the media. The fact that Arab govts. such as Syria and Jordan asked the Palestinians to leave "temporarily" so they could attack the newly formed Israel and give the Palestinians their homes back after Israel is destroyed is never mentioned. The fact that while Jordan controlled most of the West Bank from '48-'67 and the Palestinians had no voting rights and already lived in refugee camps well before Israel took over the West Bank is never mentioned. The fact that there were no "Palestinians" as a people until the mid-1900's when the name became popular from a terrorist organization. And on and on....I am not saying Israel is compeltely blameless in this mess, but I am saying that we should all learn our history before stating facts that simply aren't so black and white.
You what you guys need to do your research correctly my friend. Palastine never belonged to muslims in the first place. Read the bible, God makes it very clear that he gave them that land thousands of years ago. I believe palastine is former bethlehem where Jesus was born. The bible makes it very clear that it is israels land. Muslims have libya, egpty, syria and saudia arabia, and thats not even all of them. So you people out there talking about arabs getting palastine back....well my friend just do your research from the source itself....the bible.....the bible is the history of israel. Palastine was bethlehem which belonged to israel
When Mohammand spread the word of Islam and conquered territory, he offered his new captives the right to convert to Islam or become slaves. However, he allowed the people of the Book (Jews) to keep there faith because they were brothers to the same God. In the end, all three religions have the same core beginning and if we truly believe our faith, we were destined to live together.
Whatever PA shows their ignorance. Muslims were in the area 2500 years ago, they were called jews. They didn't become muslims unitl the 7th century when muhammad came along to start what is now Islam, the youngest of major religions.
Whatever, pa..your comment is not justified and incorrect.  To correct what you said.. What religion does Adam belong to?  Judaism (it's in the Old Testament, which in case you did not know is what Jews believe in).  The Jews have been persecuted and pushed out of Israel for literally thousands of years.  And to say that Muslims have been living there for 2500 years is absolutely incorrect.  Islam was not started until about 1400 years ago, in Saudi Arabia.  Muhammad never even got to Jerusalem; he died before arrival.  Please check your facts and don't post comments that can so easily be refuted.
I just waiting for the day Usrealis and Palestinians unite to fight America. It will happen, these are jews and arabs we are talking about here...
A country is only as great as how it treats those that it controls.  With the constant death of Palestinian children, women and men and the gross discrimination the Pelestinian survivors face, there is very little to celebrate.
The Arabs/Palestinians took the land by storm.  They were not "born to it".  Neither were the Jews/Israelis.  Neither deserves it because of a book.  The Israelis earned it.  By buying land at exhorbitant prices and clearing it.  By responding to the Arab/Palestinian massacres, which began this long episode of conflict, in response to the Jews/Israelis attempt to live in peace in the area.  Both sides are responsible for the make-up of the area.  Only one side accepts the past and its result.  The other side sticks it head in the sand, saying they deserve everything because of history, but wanting the history to begin at a time convenient for them.  Instead of getting on with it, as the Jews/Israelis did.  Jews/Israelis came there before the Holocaust.  Israel is not the world's payment for that horror, but the result of actions by all parties.  Life is not perfect.  We all have to live with that in mind and continue onwards, not backwards.
it is amazing to see the hate,6 million jews killed 90 percent of countrys dont let them in,people are still dying after the war with no food no roof on top of their heads, and you are so worried for those people, arafat didnt want peace in 1999 when clinton offerd him the world beacause if there would be peace he would be bored, let them continue to shoot rockets and blow up shopping centers and city buses and they will get peace
To the idiot in Whatever, PA, the Jews have been in Israel for 5,000 unlike 2,500 years for the Palestidiots.  You say the Jews stole Israel from the Palestidiots.  No, the Palestidiots have been discards by the Muslim community and have no place to go.  They have been deposited on Israel.  Even the Arabs can't stand the Palestidiots.  Remember Jordan?  They raged war against Israel and LOST, now Israel is burdened with THEIR problem you moron!  Why doesn't the Arab community take then in under their wing?  I'll tell you why.  Because even the Arabs don't want the Palesitidiots either.  Why should they when they have the Jews doing their dirty work for them.  The Palesitidiots are to the Middle East Arab world as the Blacks are to America!
I think it is disgusting that people actually go out of their way to use a forum such as this to display their ignorance and antisemitism. Go dig a hole in ISRAEL more than 6 inches deep and you will find the truth is... JEWS [HEBREWS] have been there far longer than their enemies who claim they stole their land?
Anyone who cares to review or learn known history would know TRUTH- the facts though for some unknown agenda are constantly confused and distorted. Not one JEW in all history has nor would ever blow themselves up in pursuit of their ignorance. They have however cured diseases and made contributions to education, business, science, history, medicine, arts, etc.,etc, well beyond any other and all groups of people that have saved millions of lives. Why is it out of the billions of people on this earth that these 12 million-a fraction of the earth's population that these people are so special or such a concern?
It is good they may enjoy their existance and for the good of all mankind, pray may they always..........
The light of these people illuminates across the entire world. Leave them a days peace-they have earned it.

It seems that few of the above know who the palestines are. Palestines, never have a land. They were people moving from place to place without ever settling into one place. This entire area and history proves that was jewish even before the palestines got there. It was than taking away from the jewish people and UN rightfully so gave back to the original owners.
Also, how any israelis can have compassion with people that most of the time are there to explode a bomb killing a lot of inocent people? The Palestines need to prove first that they can live in peace with Israel.
Addressing "whateverPA"
The "they" who hated the Jewish people was a wacked out MAN and his wacked out followers I.E. hiltler and the PERFECT race of wacked out SUPER MEN.
Many folks throughout history have been persecuted and hated through NO fault of their own. Hate doesn;t need a rational reason it just needs the neurotic insanity that drives it.
Israel has a dilemma on how to exist as a light unto nations, according to its own high standard? Right. Ask all the Palestinian babies, children and women who've died at their hands. Oh wait, Palestine ISN'T a Nation anymore because Israel stripped them of it. So where's the dilemma?
I got an idea.
How about having the Aborigionese controlling Australia.
In all things, They should keep in mind the word of God-The Bible, because it has constantly remained true in the Great, Beloved Nation's fate. Except that!Everything is in God's hands. I am their great supporter and Friend. Bless be the Lord forever. In Jesus Name. Amen
I am shocked that the following remark was not screened out: 'they [the Jews] were thorouhly hated when they lived in euorpe and they still do from all its neighbour, they must have done "something" to desrve that'. - Despite its poor English, this statement smells like rationalization of the medieval blood libels: if there is so much anti-Semitism in the world, then there must be something true in it after all.
“The unintended result of the Internet is the dissemination of hate globally in nano-seconds under the protection of anonymity. (...)
The vicious anti-Semitism and bigotry found on the Internet has reached a level unparalleled in history considering the web’s scope." Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director in a briefing before the Knesset (the Israeli Parliament) Immigration, Absorption and Diaspora Committee, on February 19, 2008. (cf. http://hiram7.wordpress.com/2008/02/21/anti-defamation-league-briefs-israeli-knesset-on-internet-hate/)
Wow 60 years. No wonder the Palestinians are still trying to fight to get their country back. Its just been stolen from them. Looks like someone is being a greedy......
Israel and Palestine will never settle their differences until one is conquered by the other.  This article is very decent in presenting the "beauty and success" of this country.  Sure let's grant them that for their anniversary.  But like one reader said what is this independence representing or more importantly independent from what/whom?   What this article lacks is reality.  It's like writing a story about Serbia and congratulating them on their day of republic but not mentioning the role they played in ethnic cleansing in Bosnia...  it's just poofed away, like it never existed.  I think it's only fair to be real and honest, present a story with all its sides.
Israel did not steal land!!!!! They where given this land!!! It was a decision that was made by the UN. The Palestinians are terrrorists. If they want to flourish and help there economy they should stop sending suicide bombers against there neighbors and learn how to work with one another!
In Palestine they teach there children how to hate Jews, how to kill a jew, I am talking about 5 year old children!!!!
Do not bash Israel!!! Israel wants to live in peace but the Palestinians are full of jeoulsy and hatred!!!
If you studied and tryed to look at the history of the Palestinian people, they are refugees from Lebannon and Egypt. The real question you should ask is - Why where they kicked out so many years ago?

For Whatever and Why below...

One only needs to go to the Bible and the Old Testament to discover the true rights of the land. It not only is clear but offers prophesy to what will happen in the end of times. May I suggest reading the Bible cover to cover with an open mind. A good read as well is Joel Rosenberg, Epicenter.

The land of Israel and the Jews have a divine appointment to be together until His return. Just stating the facts. Blessings-

Why would somebody even go there???
The land was stolen, like we stole from  the indiens!
What an interesting comment by why,NY:  "can you imagine red indians coming in to washinton DC and wanting their country back, would you let UN award it back to them."  Putting aside the racist comment about "red indians", it seems that s/he has no problem with Christian Caucasians committing genocide and stealing the land upon which s/he lives from Native Americans but is troubled when Jews attempt to take control of their own fates in the land where they had exercised sovereignty after 2000 years of dispersal and subjugation by other nations.  During those 2000 years, Jewish life and survival was determined by the peoples among whom they lived:  both Muslim and Christian primarily.  Jews had little control over the quality of their own lives and often lacked control even over whether they would be allowed to live at all.  The return to Zion and establishment of Jewish independence, especially after the mass murder of one-third of the entire Jewish population worldwide, is one of the greatest stories of victims retaking control over their own destinies that ever has been told.
To the contrary, "Palestinians" never exercised sovereignty over the land upon which they lived; it always was governed by a foreign occupying power. And, indeed, when they were offered soverign control over more than 50% of 1947 Palestine and over approximately 85% of 1920 Palestine, they rejected the offers and repeatedly went to war to prevent any exercise of Jewish sovereignty.  That notwithstanding that Jews formed the majority of the population in the areas which had been awarded to them by the UN, and had formed a majority of the population in Jerusalem since the 1800s, which was not awarded to either Jews or Palestinians by the UN and which is the so-called "Palestinian downtown" shown in the photograph.  That the Palestinians lost the murderous wars which they began in 1920, 1929, 1936 and 1947 is no cause for grief.  They had been Nazi allies during World War II, continued the fight after the fascists were beaten, and deservedly suffered the same fate.  If they continue to suffer, perhaps because unlike Germany, Italy, Japan and their allies, the Palestinians never renounced fascism or race hatred or despotism, and have either continued to practice it themselves or have permitted their leaders to continue to practice forms of it in their name.
The homes and areas shown in the photograph are in one piece, well fed, and thriving, despite Palestinian suicide attacks, school bombings, and anti-Jewish murders.  Why,ny would not acknowledge that, even if s/he knew it, because facts clearly are not part of his/her analysis.
Perhaps why, ny should consider the consequences to the people whose stolen land s/he lives upon and should try to help those victims, rather than condemning the Jewish victims who successfully reestablished their lives in their own land.  No meaningful offer of sovereignty was extended to the native peoples who had lived on the land under why,ny's feet.
I have no idea how to prove what religion my great great great grandparents were. Nor can any Zionists.  The East European Jews are likely decsended from the Khanite of Kagan. A Ukranian Kingdom that CONVERTED to Judaisim and lasted about 500ad to 1200ad.  They re White Settler-Colonialists, just like South Africans (former staunch allies in the 1980s who traded nuclear weapons technology to bomb africans).
What a world to live in that Theives, rapists and murderers can celebrate a 60th anniversary. It goes to show you the power of the Zionist controlled media and how they can make us belive what ever they want.
STOP THE APARTHEID IN PALASTINE!!!
WOW what a change? Yes Israel has cause and right to celebrate " INDEPENDENCE" BUT WHAT ABOUT THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE LAND? If there was a sense of brother hood then both countries ie. Israel and Palestines should have got the day for celebration side by side but this will never happen when you have super power existing, but super divine power is the one who created this world ie GOD / ALLAH. SO let us pray every thing goes well on such occassions NO INNOCENT LIVES ARE LOST.
Lets all pray for peace and justice for everyone in the world. War is evil and peace is good.
ha!

israel's a criminal state and it'll always be humiliated.
This is in response to Whatever, PA- There were no muslims 2500 years ago!!! take a history class!
Why would somebody even go there???
The land was stolen, like we stole from  the indiens!
As far as US allies in the middle east... Israel is a liability, not an asset.
