Israel at 60 - a land of contradictions

Israel's logo for its 60th anniversary harks back to the good old days – an innocent boy in shorts romping with a variation of the Israeli flag unfurling behind him.

But you can't please everyone. One orthodox Jewish member of parliament trashed the symbol, saying the child looks "frumpy and should get a haircut."

That could sum up the reservations of many Israelis about their country as its leaders prepare to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

Festivities being met with a yawn
President Bush will be coming later in the month for part of the festivities, reportedly with about 800 of his closest friends and bodyguards. And a dozen other leaders from countries as diverse as Rwanda, Burkina Faso and Latvia, will attend too, along with the world's A-list of party stars Tony Blair, Henry Kissinger and Mikhail Gorbachev. Paris Hilton will be absent, to the chagrin of ordinary Israelis, who appear to be treating the party with a yawn.

For most people Independence Day on Thursday will proceed as usual – children spraying each other with string foam and hitting each other on the head with squeaky plastic hammers, a violent custom that apparently goes back to the days of pre-plastic Persia; barbeques on every square foot of public space; and car drivers flying the Israeli flag. It's a raucous annual celebration of what Israelis see as one of the great achievements of the twentieth century: After 2,000 years, the return of the Jews to the land of Zion.

The ensuing conflict with the Palestinians over the right to the land, the tarnishing of the Jewish dream in the face of brute reality, the wake-up call of the need to survive, none of these harsh facts detract from the central achievement, that a persecuted people never gave up on their dream and 2,000 years after their expulsion, and dispersal around the globe, gathered together again, revived their dead language, and created one of the world's most exciting countries.

A land of contradictions
I've reported from Israel for almost half its lifetime. What always strikes me is the contradiction between the glory of its existence and the mundane reality of what it takes to exist. One friend, an archaeologist and former Mossad agent, summed up his varied interests saying that his two worlds complement each other perfectly. In one he collects and analyses data to understand the past, in the other he collects and analyses data to understand the future.

For me, that sums up the central dilemma of Israel, where the past determines the future: how to exist as a light unto nations, according to its own high standard, in a region where, just to survive, it has adopted the harsh methods of its neighborhood, so successfully that it is known as the neighborhood bully.

Israel is a land of contradictions: a desert that reaches the sea; snow-capped mountains with ski resorts two hours away from sun-drenched beaches; Jerusalem, the heart of three great religions, where the prayers never end, less than an hour from the fleshpots of Tel Aviv, the city that never sleeps. Centers of hi-tech and innovation alongside the greatest biblical scholars in the world, a powerful military force pitted daily against home-made rockets, a vibrant economy with one of the world’s strongest currencies and one of the greatest gaps between rich and poor in the developed world.

It's a head-spinning place, and all the more vibrant for it. Few first-time visitors leave without saying something like: "I had no idea what a great place Israel is."

But few visit the 20 foot high wall and fence that is supposed to keep out suicide bombers, or visit a Jewish settlement on the West Bank, or see the fence around Gaza.

For Israel is a bipolar place. One reality exists alongside another: war and peace, love and hate, pain and joy.

Israel at 60 is a fascinating and challenging country, unlike any other.

isreal doesnt have much to celeberate, i dont c them having another 60 year aniversary, especially with growing amount of arab isreals within its borders, there going to have to give up there jewish state for democracy.
umhhhh, only that palestinians could say that too.its hard to see any conflict between isreal and palestine because isreal stole palestinian's land and celebrating their independece.from who??hahahahahahaha
the reason isrealites have always given that this land where palestinians muslims have been living for over 2500 years was given to them and they can steal it and throw them out.by that token, adam was the first man on earth and he lived on this holy land long before israelies did.the land belongs to God ,pepole come and go,civilisations flourish and then destroyed like they never even existed.if this land was promised to jews for some time, then its just a matter of time when it goes back to its orignal owners.they were thorouhly hated when they lived in euorpe and they still do from all its neighbour, they must have done "something" to desrve that.
i can't help notice a nice  palestine downtown in 1947 (the above picture) before UN snatched thisland from muslims to award it to jews.now you can't find any home or building in one piece,no food or any peace for that matter in palestine.
can you imagine red indians coming in to washinton DC and wanting their country back, would you let UN award it back to them.thats how it looks to me"isreal palestine conflict"judge for yourself.one man's celebrations, other man's pain.
My wife and I just returned from 15 glorius days in Israel and agree with Mr. Fletcher entirely.  We literally went from Dan to Beersheba by way of Eilat thereby traversing all of the various climates, cultures and religions that Israel has to offer.  Our constant comment was "Wow, look what they have done in 60 relatively short years".  And while there were certainly constant reminders of the conflict that remains, there were also constant reminders of how the majority of the populace live together in harmony and respect of each other's "space" even where there are deep cultural and religious divides.  Now, if the rest of the world would resist interference and let them settle their own differences, peace in Israel would probably stand a chance.  Here's to praying for peace!!
What a fantastic article.  Almost poetic, most definitely heart warming and thoughtful.  I was in Israel this past summer and want to go back to feel the heat on my face, feel the dirt on my hands, spend a whole afternoon meditating at Yad Vashem, and drinking an early morning coffee at a local bakery.
I support Israel, but I really wish they would be a bit more caring when it comes to the Palestinians.  After centuries of being displaced themselves, you would think they would have more compassion for a people that they themselves displaced.
Pretty good nutshell analysis. The devilish details raise serious questions about Israel's social and  political future even though it is likely to retain its military superiority so long as the US remains true. For one day, though, Israelis can focus on the success of hopefulness and the world can be reminded of the strength of redemption.
Well-stated.  Perhaps in such a brief commentary, it was not possible to include the self-consciousness of Israelis about the very facts you raise, but that is very real and is what gives hope to many of us that peace will eventually take hold there.
Israel is the biggest obsticle to world peace all supported by the u.s. congress..and us dopy taxpayers. The press does little to show us the real misery and cruelty that Israel inflicks on Palestinians. Shame on Israel, shame on us (U.S.)..
Does anyone else NOT care?
There are more people in the Metro Los Angeles area than in Israel and Palestinian territories combined, i.e. those countries are utterly insignificant and do not warrant their current level of federal aid or media attention.
why must isreal be jewish and democratic? why cant isreal be fully secular and democratic? why divide the patriachs children into various camps (christians jewish and muslim) why cant it be one nation under God for all? why the long persecuted jews persecuting? they lived out in wilderness more 2000 years, why understanding that pain must inflict that pain? why loving the sacred land wont let others love that sacred land too, just because they are not jewish, why when they finally got to get home, wont allow those dispersed who are jewish to return home? 60 years they have been waiting? why such unfairness?
I can hardly wait to go back and see all that Israel has to offer, including the danger.  A week after the last time I left, a suicide bomber blew up the central market in Jerusalem.  Just a week earlier I was walking through that very same market with my fellow olympians at the Maccabiad...  It was great to be in a place where one didn't have to hide their religion and be free of negative remarks and prejudice.  I lived the first 18 years of my life hiding my identity in an anti-semitic country, and the visit to Israel freed up my inner strength and determination to make the change.  Now I live in a great country with the freedom of religion in its groundstones, and I can't be more thankful to Israel to open up my eyes.  Peace and love to all.
The Muslims did not live in Palestine 2500 years ago. Islam is only 1,000 years old. The jews lived in "Israel" until the Muslim hoards (Salledin) attacked from the East and conquered the area. It briefly changed hands to Christians during the Crusades and then back to Muslim rule again.  So the Palestinians are not the original occupants of the area, the jews were.  So I have no problem with the jews getting their ancient land back that the muslims stole from them 1,000 years ago. First the jews were enslaved by Egypt, then the Romans, then the Nazi Germans. Do you blame them for not wanting to be enslaved by the Arabs?
let us review the spanish expulsion of jews from spaim in 1492. Than the portugal expulsion. Than the russian expulsions and finally in 1939 the final european expulsion to auschwitz, treblinka, bergen belsen, dachau et al.
In 1492 jews in spain were told to accept the christian way of "life". They were not offered "life" but the jew in spain resisted the christian way and accepted the "jewish Way".Spanish Jews were told to leave spain without money property. They were escorted to the borders of course fully protected that no mobs would attack them? Read the articles on this chapter. Imagine marching from central spain to the border with your wife and infant babies in their arms without legal protection or any citizenship protection. Take a look at the next chapters and look at the most recent chapter. Well europeans finally thought hitler solved the world problem. Jews were again on the march. This time it looked like jews were marching to the end. But behold there were back doors to those ovens and they led to "palestine". Jewish people yearned for their "home" where they could be Jewish and not be marched around by any one else. They settled in palestine but the arabs who lived there ran away to jordan and arab countries. they were going to unite and put the jews on the march again. It did not happen. But the arabs did not give up. They were ready to live lives of hoodlums just to accomplish what they wanted to do. The jews wanted peace and gave gaza back. What is happening there. A group of arabs relentlessely bent on destroying the jewish lives who live near that border. Again the arabs want the marches to begin. Yes Jews are on the march. But now jews coming out of those camps in europe where a secret door and tunnel opened up for the jews are on the march. Time will tell where jews will march. But today in Israel the march is uphill - the hill that moshiach, the jewish moshiach will tell the world where to march and when.
We are going to Israel next week.  This is my fifth visit.  I have no family in Israel :-(.  As a Jewish refugee from the USSR living in Boston, I have a great respect for Israel and the US.  If I was treated by the above the way Arabs treat their people I would have no respect for them.  Instead, the moment I stepped from a train in Austria on my way to the US I was helped and cared by strangers and goverments.  If we want peace in the Middle East Arabs should learn about helping others from the US and Israel.  I am pessimistic regarding this, so I am for STRONG Israel and peace through strength.
That "miracle" in 60 years, with nuclear power and the most advanced science, comes from hard discipline and loyalty to Israel. Palestinians and others are not smart-organized enough like to achieve something equivalent.
Wishing the Israeli people Salutations as they celebrate their country's 60th birthday. I am
also hoping that their government leaders will
stop soliciting the United States for weapons; defense spending without accurate accounting and tracing; that they STOP violating the Palestinian
peoples rights through lop-sided incursions. I hope that the Israeli people would find it in their hearts and souls to allow Palestinans access to basic infrastructure and resources that belonged to them at one time: water, for instance.

I wish, that on the 60th birthday of Israel; that its' government would retreat to teh 1967 borders and end the expansions of the settlement - that's blatantly wrong.

I wish them peace - a fair and equitable peace for both populations of people.

Yes, it is amazing what a society can do with a $20 billion year infusion of my (and your) tax dollars.  As for what Israel would do if the other nations (and a few reasonable Israeli's themselves) left them to their devices...they'd complete the cultural or absolute genocide of palestinians in the disputed territories.  Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy just thinking about it.  Too bad the words "never again!" only apply to persecution of the persecutors themselves.
Just how many lives have to be lost in the name of religion? Whether it be Christianity or Islam what kind of God condones killing in his name? This is the true definition of hypocrisy.
just finished reading the article and comments from the people--israel is the land of all peoples, unfortunately the world hates the fact that the jewish people made the land "blossom" why blame the jewish people for the problems the palistians have--the other arab states didn't want them--and the israelies are only protecting themselves--wouldn't we do that in the united states if canada or mexico were throwing missiles at us?
bobbie-houston texas
i wish we could see some celebrations and prosperity on the other side of that 20feet high wall that practically imprisoned whole palestine nation and throw them into misery and poverty.if they believe in two nation territory then how can isreal raid into another country every other day, imagine doing that in mexico or canada.
the hell with isreal's celebrations where they are dancing in the pool of palestinians innocent blood and telling the world about thier strong military and diverse culture where there are no body but jews.go figure.....if they really want peace then let international peacekeeping force into the territory and let the world know the "whole truth",not biased & twisted westeren media stunts.
I disagree with Martin Fletcher's use of the security fence as a symbol of the negative side of Israeli independence.  While it's unfortunate to need the fence for self-defense, to me the fence is a symbol of the division between Israel, a progressive multi-ethnic culture (yes, 20% of Israelis are Arab), from a would-be regressive, Islamicist one.
"palestinians muslims have been living for over 2500 years"

You might want to check your history a bit better...

Islam didn't exist 2500 years ago.. and "Palestinians" have only existed since the 1960s.

Further, the land in question hadn't been under Arabic control for generations when the UN ceded it to Israel... it's kind of hard to say somebody stole something from you when you never owned it.
that is ok thank you
Facts, ladies and gentlemen, we need facts.
You are entitled to your own opinions, you are not entitled to your own facts.
Be concrete, be specific, be clear and concise.
Israel is a great country anyway you look at it. The problem with the palestinian's is their own leaders who advised them 60 years ago to go away while we finish off the jews. Have you noticed any major war between the israel and it's neighbors since 1973 when they took back the land that belonged to them. It took them 5 wars before realizing what they had to do to survive, and wth all this they are still willing to talk to them about peace. Give credit where credit is due.
To the Palestinians, Tough times don't last. Tough people do.
I support the Palestinians to the fullest - 60 years of stealing land and lives. Wow we should leave Israil to fight its own problems. Let Iran and the misplaced Pals and Muslums take care of business.
Peace to the real people of this land
It is interesting to read the replies to this blog just as much as the blog itself. Note that all the Jews who have responded pray for peace, while the anti-Semites spew hatred.
The Jews have been around for over 2500 years. The Christians have been around for over 2000 years. The Muslims have only been around for 1500 years. The land of Zion belong to the Jews first. Now of course the Muslims say that they have been around forever and the world belongs to them. I am begining to think that Muslims belong to an army not a religion. "Long Live Israel" and peace on earth.
None of that land belongs to the muslims. It was given to the Israelis BY God, thru Moses, and they deserve every inch of it.  I completely support Israel and wish my government (USA) would stop forcing Israel to give in to the terrorist islamics.  Israel forever!
Comments about Israelis "stealing" Palestinian land are based on the false premise that there were no Jews in Palestine before Israel was created. This is simply not the case. In fact, the population was almost 40% Jewish and 60% Arad in the time of WWI (that's right -- one, not two).

And the impetus to divide the land between Jews and Arabs started at the end of WWI and the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Britain was then given The Palestine Mandate until a resolution could be made so that the land could be evenly divided. At this point, by the way, we're talking of "Palestine" at c.1920, which included both modern-day Israel, the West Bank, Gaze, AND the whole country of JORDAN! However, to reward Emir Abdullah for the efforts and assistance of his Bedouin Army in helping to combat the Ottomans, Britain illegally and without legal right, since it was only serving as a UN mandatory and not a post-war conqueror, simply "gave" Jordan to the Emir c.1922.

Following this, the Jews were asked to divide the "remaining land," which at that point was already <50% of what the old Palestine was. In three successive UN plans recommended by The Peel Commission, beginning in 1937, each of which gradually allocated a lesser amount of land for the Jews, the UN attempted to partition the land. The Jews accepted each of such 3 proposals, the last of which gave them the least amount of land and was to serve as Israel's borders once the British Mandate ended (i.e., when Britain removed their troops). That day was May 14, 1948.

Within 8 hours, the new state of Israel was invaded by 8 aggressor Arab armies, but miraculously fought and ultimately won (without any US involvement by the way) in that an armistice was signed in 1949. Armistice does not mean "recognized borders," only that the "fighting will end." Basically, the Arabs lost but wanted the land back anyway, even though they started the war.

Anyone who says that the Jews "stole" the land is simply misinformed and buys into the propoganda spewed by linking the Holocaust to Israel's connection. The Holocaust only created the *political will* to end the Mandate. Their was a huge Jewish population dating back decades before even WWI, and the new Jewish population emigrated to lands that had been allocated to Jews.

Don't believe me? Google it. Search for "Balfour Declaration," "Sykes-Picot Agreement," "Palestine Mandate," "Peel Commission," etc.
The first two comments have many falsities in them. Israelis/Jews never stole land from anyone. They bought land legally from Arabs for centuries leading up to its declaration of independence. In 1948 Arab leadership told the Palestinians to leave because they were going to "drive the Jews into the sea." Also, Islam has only been around since the 7th century so it isn't possible for Muslims to have inhabited the land for '2500 years' as 'whatever' from PA indicated. On the contrary, it is the year 5768 for the Jewish calendar.
israel deresves this land,Jews were fro mthe begining. Israel didnot steal the land from no one before there were only dirt there and nothing modern.  I have been there and Israel is a beautiful place.
The palestinians as they refer to themselves only began laying claim to Israel prior to WWI.  They are latecomers to the claim. If the Arab nations want them to have a state so bad they can give them some of their land.  Jews occupied that land for centuries until forcibly removed.  Now that they are back by the grace of god they will hold it for centuries more.
In the criminal law, theft (also known as stealing) is the illegal taking of another person's property without that person's freely-given consent. As a term, it is used as shorthand for all major crimes against property, encompassing offences such as burglary, embezzlement, larceny, looting, robbery, mugging, trespassing, shoplifting, intrusion, fraud (theft by deception) and sometimes criminal conversion. In some jurisdictions, theft is considered to be synonymous with larceny; in others, theft has replaced larceny
To whatever from PA;
Read your Bible, the land was given to the Jews, of which Jesus and his disciples where members of.  That land was give to them almost 4,000 years ago, so don't talk 60 years and the poor Palestinians who were abandoned by the other Arab countries in 1948.
Whatever and Why: Israel's independence was from the British who governed the territory after the fall and break-up of the Ottoman Empire. "Palestine" never existed as an independent political entity.

That being said, I am disturbed that the Olmert government has not seized the opportunity to disengage from the West Bank in coordination with Mahmoud Abbas' moderate government. If Sharon were still in power he would have made an agreement by now. The longer Israel holds onto the settlements and outposts beyond the large settlement blocs on the border, the less chance there will be of peace with a contiguous Palestinian state.
To "Whatever PA,"
(1) the Jews were in Israel before the Palestinians; the Dome of the Rock is built ON the ruins of the Jewish temple, which means the temple was there first
(2) there never was a "Palestine" as a country as far as I know - it went back and forth between Turkey and Britian, etc.
(3) Maybe the Jews didn't "do" anything to be hated; maybe the world and its people are just hateful.  I think because Judaism is the wellspring of Christianity and Islam, these two subsequent and later religions have always felt that they had to reject Judaism and Jews to prove that they, Christians, and later, Muslims, were "right."  So, they, particularly the Christians, did hateful things to the Jews for 2000 years.  Martin Luther was particularly nasty - read what he's written.  It's not really a "Jewish" problem.  It's a "Christian" and "Muslim" problem.
God gave Israel to the Jews the apple of his eye.It was not intended for the Jews to give away the land that was promised to them for any reason. Those who do not support God's people will one day he his judgement. This is in his Holy word.
Whenever we hear BS like "palestinians muslims have been living for over 2500 years" it's important to remember where the world "Palestine" comes from...

The term originated with the word "Plesheth" which was the name of a group of GREEK settlers.  These would become known as the "Philistines" in later years ( and as recorded in the bible ).

From the fifth century the Greeks called the area "the Philistine Syria."  After the Jewish revolt in 135 AD Roman emporer Hadrian renamed the area "Provincia Syria Palaestina" in an attempt to blot out the Jewish identity of the region.  This was later renamed to simply "Palaestina" by the Romans, and then converted to the more English name of "Palestine" as Britain gained influence.

So, in short.. this "Ancient" Arabic homeland is named after the British mispronunciation of a Roman name for a Greek people.  Incidentally, 2500 years ago the territory would have been known as Judea.
To Whatever and Why..If you had ever bothered studying history instead of just believing what other anti-semits have told you, you'd know that the land of Israel was not stolen by the Jews nor have the "Palestinain" Arabs been passive victims...as a Christian American living in Israel I wonder if you are as sanctimonious and self righteous on the 4th of July?? Our homeland was in fact stolen from people who were there 35,000 years...As for your comment about Jews "deserving" bad treatment, you would have made a wonderful Nazi.Israel is in fact a great nation of wonderful people, no better, no worse, simply trying to exist with dignity with the hand they were dealt, like the rest of us.
A land of contradictions?  More likely a nation of ambiguity, whose semantics disguise it's sinister agenda.  I just wish that W(imp) Bush would show some balls, and cancell his visit to Israel, so as to express our nation's displeasure at the continuing spying on us, perpetrated by this "special friend."
it is sad to know that israel is still such abipolar land...
i have just finished reading Friedman's book-from Beirut to Jerusalem - which gave me soem knowledge of what those 40 years of its hisrtory was all about.
and as friuedman says is so true today.. a people who are all strength but can never and will never see peace as it has pushed back the palestinians and forced them to accept what it has taken and giving some crumbs to palestien...an uneasy head that lies on the pillow!!!!
It is unfortunate that many Americans believe the Arab rhetoric - in 1947, the Jews accepted the UN resolution that essentially split Israel (and parts of western Jordan and easter Egypt) into 2 states - and Arab State and a Jewish State.  The Arabs living in the area along with all of the neighboring Arab nations declared war on the Jewish people.  The Jews, using ingineuity and their own home-made weaponry, defeated the professional Arab armies and created a country out of the desert that is more esteemed than every one of their neighbors (i.e. compare the number of Arab nobel prize winners to the number of Israeli winners - and remember that Israel is 1/100th in population and size of those states).

How 'bout this - Israel is a Democratic state (that's right - and Arab can practice Islam and work in Israel - and be FREE).  Now name an Arab nation that is truly democratic and practices freedom of religion.  Israel is the only country to have supported the United States's position on every UN resolution and yes - the USA supports Israel with financial and economic aid - but what nation will defend the US's interests in the Middle East (Saudi Arabia - no, Yemen - no, Jordan - no, the United Arab Emerites - come on).

Hopefully the vast sentiment of Arabs around the world is not the feeling that Israel must be destroyed (personally I don't believe it is); but, we must not believe the Arab propoganda that makes Israel look like a "bully" - Israel has been victimized by Arab terrorists that are affiliated with Hamas, the PLO, Iran, Syria, Al Queda - Israel has a right to defend itself, including aggressive offensives (as with bombing a station in Syria that was being developed as a nuclear reactor) because just remember this - if they don't do it, and they are destroyed, the USA will have to do it alone.
You know what...Palestinians are marking "Al- Nakba" translated as "the catastrophe" on the same exact day.  There has to be peace there.  There just has to be.  Believe it or not all our lives are depending on it.  I, a proud Palestinian, believe that there can be peace between us and Israel.  Its so beautiful there and when you are there I swear you can feel how important that place is.  It belongs to all of us.  We can do this, let the ones that stand in the way get ran over.
Those of my father's family who survived the holocaust live in Israel.  My parents were sponsored by a cousin in Minnesota and we came to the US.  I love America and have had the good fortune to visit Israel and love the land. Having family in the land adds to my experience. I have had the priviledge to listen to Martin Fletcher for years.  I loved this article.   It has truth.  If Palestinian children were taught to love and understand the Jewish land instead of hate, peace may have a chance.  As long as the message to the children is hate and martyrdom, the future of peace is a dream.

Shutup all you anti semities, especially Whatever, (PA). It's troubling their are idiots like you out there. First, the Jews offered to share Israel with Palestineans but the Palestinesans were greedy and fought Israel. Well, Israel beat them. Even with that, Israel gaave them the Gaza Strip. Also, the Palestineans have shown no progress in containing their people, caracking down on crime, or feeding, clothing and providing healthcare for their people. Israel has done it out of good will. And, Whatever, (PA), your comment that Jews deserved hate in Eurpope and the Middle East is terrible. Jews got hated in Europe because they were scapogoated for economic and social downtimes there like in the Holocaust. So that is extremeley rude to say Jews deserved hate because your saying it's ok for them to be hated and then killed for things that they did not to do but were blamed for. It seems Whatever,(PA), is a neo nazis or supporting them(which is just as bad). The reason Jews are hated in the Middle East because they give women rights', civil rights, let people practice their own religon, and are the only true democracy in the Middle Eaet. They are mad because Jews are nice to their peopole and they and the rest of Middle East nations are mean and oppressive to their people. That is no reason to be be mean to Jews because Jews are righteous and fair people. Whatever, (PA)should shut up and read a book and see the horrors of the Holoucaust and the Jews plight (the hardest conditions of any people was and is the conditons for the Jewish people). Whatever,(PA), get a brain and don't talk about things they are past your IQ. Maybe you should grow a human heart as well Whatever,(PA). Whatever,(PA) you may want to stop being a Neo Nazis, Nazis sympathizer, and a bigot as well.
God created the Earth,Heavens and us Humans and with that same power and authority HE gave the Jews a certian portion of land on this big earth ball.  How can any one tell them it not theirs.  I am not a Jew just a gentile but I can tell you that the matter is settled heaven and any one ( or group of people) say they have a right to it is going against God.
I don't blame Palestinians for what they are doing because somebody took their land. And I don't blame Jews either, because everybody in the world hates them and they have no ware to go. Since Jews have been living in Israel for 60 years they deserve to stay there. I think they should come together and try to live in peace.
