Face-to-face with a Taliban commander

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – Taliban cleric Faqir Mohammed is tall, thin, very serious and very religious. His eyes are hard and he speaks slowly. He never smiles.

And when you hear what he has to say, you won’t be smiling either.

"If we get hold of nuclear weapons – which we hope to get very soon – then we will safeguard them until Allah Almighty guides us when and against whom to use them," he told NBC News in an interview at his mountain hideout.

These days, the 38-year-old cleric prefers to be called "Commander Faqir." He thinks it befits his new role as deputy leader of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the umbrella organization that was formed last December to try and unite Pakistani militants.

NBC News
Faqir Mohammed, left, speaks with NBC News Mushtaq Yusufzai, center, at his remote mountain top stronghold near the Pakistan/ Afghanistan border while Faqir's bodyguards standby in the rear.

Faqir is considered by many to be equal in importance, if not even more important, than Baitullah Mehsud, the top Taliban commander in Pakistan, who has been linked to the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto last December.

Remote mountain top meeting
Maulvi Omar is Faqir's spokesman and a seasoned Taliban fighter who goes by several names. He is now in charge of the Taliban's media machine. Omar arranged for NBC News’ Mushtaq Yusufzai to meet Faqir to discuss the ongoing attempts between the Pakistani government and the local Taliban militants to negotiate a peace deal. The newly elected democratic government in Islamabad is trying to kick start those negotiations  by offering separate peace deals to different tribes and factions in hopes of bringing an end to hostilities in the tribal areas.

Yusufzai met Omar, in Khar, the capital of Bajaur, one of Pakistan’s seven semi-autonomous tribal regions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. From there, he was escorted by armed men in two white Toyota pick-up trucks to Faqir’s mountain stronghold, less than two miles from the Afghanistan border.

They travelled for half an hour through wheat fields, high mountains and deep ravines, passing several check posts controlled by Faqir’s fighters armed with AK-47 rifles, heavy machine guns and rocket propelled grenades. They seldom travel the same way more than once. In fact, some of Faqir’s men operate as scouts who regularly explore new routes so as to avoid capture and detection by the U.S. and NATO forces.

"When I entered his house-like hideout, I saw Commander Faqir, his AK-47 in his hand, sitting with dozens of armed bodyguards," said Yusufzai. "He greeted me warmly and thanked me for risking my life to come and talk with him."

American helicopter gunships hover
Yusufzai described the surreal setting of the rendezvous, "As we sat down to eat traditional chicken kerai, dried fruits and green tea, U.S. and Afghan forces engaged with a couple hundred of Faqir’s fighters right on the border. American gunship helicopters crossed over into Pakistan and hovered right above the mountain where we were sitting."

"I was scared," said Yusufzai. "I was sure that the U.S. forces knew Faqir was in the area and were looking for him. They had missed him twice before."

Faqir must have thought so too – they quickly left the house and walked further up the mountains to a cave-like fortress where he said he seeks shelter from U.S. spy planes.

Faqir explained how he and his men avoid detection. He said never carries a cell phone and never uses the Internet or any other form of modern communication. And he demands his men do the same. "Most of the top al-Qaida fighters have remained safe because they do not use any electronic devices," he said.

"All messages are conveyed through trusted couriers and the letters are immediately burned with a lighter that every fighter keeps in his pocket," said Faqir.

NBC News' Mushtaq Yusufzai, center, meets with Faqir Mohammed, left, on a mountaintop near the Pakistan/ Afghanistan border while the Taliban commander's bodyguards look on.

Close ties to top al-Qaida leadership
Faqir claims to have close links to al-Qaida’s number two, Ayman al-Zawahiri.

It was Faqir who organized a January 2006 dinner party for al-Zawahiri at Damadola in the Bajaur district. Al-Zawahiri never showed up, but U.S. predator drones did – firing missiles which killed at least 17 people, six of those alleged to have been al-Zawahiri’s lieutenants.

Ten months later, in October, the Pakistani government was ready to sign a peace deal with Faqir and his militants. Yusufzai was in Bajaur to cover the negotiations for NBC News when U.S. predator missiles destroyed the madrassa (religious school) run by Faqir. But again the drones missed their man. Eyewitnesses claim that at least 80 people were killed – mostly students returning to school after a Muslim holiday. The proposed peace agreement was dead too.

Women, too, want to lay down their lives
Faqir said that the attack by the U.S. was unwarranted and only served to help his recruitment efforts. "Americans attack us in our homes on suspicion, not on solid information," said Faqir. "I ask you – was Osama, al-Zawahiri or Mullah Omar ever present in any house where they attacked? It is the innocent people who are being killed," he said.

Faqir believes all Muslims should unite to free Afghanistan from U.S. and NATO forces. And on both sides of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border there are thousands of young men who agree with him.

"Our people have resorted to suicide attacks because of the atrocities the U.S. and allied forces have committed against us Pashtuns," Faqir insisted. "We have many requests from our men to offer this ultimate sacrifice and now even our women want to die for this sacred cause," he said. "One woman, who lost her entire family to American bombs, threatened to hold me accountable on judgment day if I didn’t give her the chance to sacrifice herself."

Not tossing out friends – al-Qaida
The Bajaur tribal area is across the mountains from Kunar Province in Afghanistan, where U.S. troops are engaged in fighting al-Qaida and the Taliban. Faqir holds sway here. He hands down a harsh Taliban form of justice through tribal and religious courts and has forced the local population to comply. His men have successfully pushed the Frontier Corps, Pakistan's paramilitary force in the tribal areas, to abandon their check posts throughout Bajaur and retreat back to the barracks in the main city of Khar. Faqir has made Bajaur a state within the Pakistani state.

"The Pakistani security forces imposed this war on us," Faqir told Yusufzai in the interview. "We never wished to fight the Pakistani army and still want to have peace with them. We are ready to negotiate with the new government in Islamabad," he said.

But those negotiations will be conditional on laying down arms and expelling foreign fighters from the tribal territories – and that means getting rid of al-Qaida. For Faqir that is a deal-breaker. The talks are stalled.

"The Pashtuns cannot allow anyone to dishonor or humiliate their guests," Faqir insisted. "These are very difficult times for us and we consider anyone who takes up arms against U.S. forces to be our guest and we will protect them."

A tribal code of honor
All the Pashtun tribes of Pakistan and Afghanistan abide by their own 5,000-year-old tribal code of honor called "Pashtunwali." Pashtunwali also means hospitality – to turn away a guest, regardless of his past, would bring dishonor and shame.

"If I could host Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri and Mullah Omar, it would be the happiest day of my life," Faqir said.

At the same time, the Pakistani government is counting on Pashtunwali to separate militants like Faqir from their tribes. They hope tribal discipline, the ultimate allegiance to one’s tribe and tribal elders – even over a radical religious ideology – may eventually isolate the extremists and allow peace negotiations to succeed.

And as for those nukes – Pakistan's generals aren't too concerned over Faqir's bluster. They say the nukes are locked up and in control of the army. The warheads are kept separate from their detonation components making it impossible to seize a complete nuclear weapon.  And they say there are only a few trusted generals who know the key to the elaborate system of command and control. Even the Bush administration is on record saying it believes that Pakistan's nukes are in safe hands-for now.

yeah, it looks we,american, live in a house of glass which is too shiny to see outside.we are trying to manipulate cultures or countries which are strictly displined to do what they say.their words are their lives.these people can be your best of all friends or worst of all enemies.they can be proud to host obl or even bush but we have stop playing games and stop killing school children and innocent people.where ever we have ever been militarily, name one country which is in better shape then it was before americans"if we even touch gold it will turn into ashes" sorry but its true.
My guess is that most of the information given to the interviewers was well calculated to present a postion of growing strength. It reminds me of Che Gueverra before he was tracked down by government forces and killed. When the carrot runs out for Pakistan and isolation by the rest of the world sets in, hunger and pestilence will make up the Pakistani's minds to again invite/permit a more forcefull Pakaistani military leader to take charge. The new leaders won't repeat  Musharif's mistakes. That new leader may be the quiet current commander of the Pakistani Armed Forces.

Wow!!- Pakistan in control of Nukes, I know I'll sleep deeper knowing they have everything under control.

Just another worry, let's see ultra-high gas prices, economy sucks, invaded another country killed over 100 thousand innocent Iraqi's all prdeicated on a lie-life is aood in the states isn't it? I need a nice long Italian vacation.

Aloha too the late great United States of America- it truly was a nice concept.
oh well people ,you will never stop complaining ever about pakistan or afghanistan even the whole world.unfortunately thats one thing common around the world.if america is super-power then it is misusing it.america manipulates other countries for her own interest and when they twist up like bad tangle and lose their integrity then meida try to present them as loser .its that same pakistan which helped america defeat russia in afghanistan, now those same old friends are your new enemies.just imagine army starts bombing schools or churches in america, think about the chain reaction its gonna bring.when you twist anything too much it usually unwinds itself on you.
America Should make this area of the world look just like we made Japan look when we dropped the bombs on them in WWII. Then all this would Stop. We did not go to there country and fly planes into civilians.
These people are disjointed and only serve themselves, not the freedom of man.  Nuke them . . . . . before they nuke us.
Wow, what a life - sitting on hard rocks, hiding in the mountains, spewing garbage ideology that claims how unwarranted the attacks by the US are. Tell that to the families of those that died; those who simply got on the wrong plane flight on the wrong damn day! These radical Muslims are hardly men, as they scurry like rats and plan suicide attacks, all the while ducking their ultimate fate: death. That is their life. While I research disease, walk my dogs at the park, cook dinner with my girlfriend, and feel peaceful staring at a blue sky, these pathetic wastes steal oxygen and eat food that would better serve a true human being somewhere else. I love America, even with all its flaws, because at least most of us here are trying to make life better, even on the smallest of scales. I'm willing to pay higher taxes if I can be assured that my dollars are going towards putting bullets in filth like this Faqir guy. The way I see it, for the world's greater good, this is all addition by subtraction.
We here in the U.S. have forgotten how to wage effective war. Submission is gained by total war, which is something the Pentagon is determined to avoid. Only by the brutal and indiscriminate bombing of the places where we make war, can the U.S. hope to achieve lasting victory. This is the way WWII was won. The U.S. had no fear of the Germans or the Japanese while in occupation. Those people were terrified that the bombing would start all over again. Why will no one learn from history?
I just listened to Robert McNamara story about lessons on vietnam on books on tape...The lesson of this war is that it could not be won in the air, only on the ground and only with a stable government.  The Russians tried to win in the air by bombing out this country.  The only way to take out the key leaders of the Tailiban is on the ground and setting up bases right in the mountains..No one has ever tamed this area of the world..The british fought and lost 5 wars in this region.Like in vietnam and laos, the enemy can withstand large amounts of bombing, with no effect on either the supply routes or military operations..This is what MacNamara wrote in his book...Strange, alot of people who lost friends in Vietnam hate the book by MacNamara but they have never read the book.. If they would read this book, they would see that Robert M. was a critic of many actions like the bombing even before he resigned and later wrote the book..
WHAT KILLS ME IS WE GIVE THEM TO MUCH CREDIT AND TO MUCH RESPECT- WE KNEW 9-11 WAS GOING TO HAPPEN BEFORE IT DID- AND THEN WE RUN A WAR BY POLITICAL CORRECTNESS- THEY USE RELIGION AS A COP OUT- WHERE THERE IS POVERTY THERE IS IGNORANCE AND THERE 2 STUPID TO REALIZE THERE LEADERS PUT A SPIN ON IT TO KEEP THEM OCCUPIED ON OTHER THINGS RATHER THANWHAT THE REAL ISSUES ARE - IN OTHER WORDS NUKE THEM AND LET "ALLAH" SORT THEM OUT GOOD RIDDENS
American military & NATO forces just don't show up in a country, someone invited them and their presence. American military take an oathe to obey a commanders, and/or the commanders who give them orders. We go, we serve, we obey, we are human, and yes we make mistakes. We have our own distinct morals & ethics, however, we accomplish the goal/objective, and learn to deal with the demons. We vote in our leader, we do not give in to a cowardless leader who commands behind a rock, inside a cave, in hiding. We as a country live together, we embrace one another who wishes to assimilate into being an American, and is tolerant of thy neighbor, we simply try to get along. The Military is not there to bring death & destruction to any or all, but to accomodate those who want to breathe, live, love and worship freely w/o any consequence for their fate. The Taliban & al- Qaida only wants to suppress people and conform them to their beliefs that their way is truly the one & only, & to oppose it, guarantees certain torture & death. I have no respect for these two groups, and the world views you as marauding zealots with no meaningful purpose. I pray to my god, that these two groups go the way of the dinosaurs....extinct.
Paul/Ohio--obviously you have not been out of your backyard to be making statments like thats. Remember the taliban had nothing to do with 9/11 but you wouldnt know becuase you are from OHIO my friend. You should focus on providing the rest of the country with corn and milk and stay out of politics
Does this seem strange to anyone. That a reporter can make a meeting with one of NATO's most wanted. If the U.S. is searching for Faqir Mohammed, how is it with all our intelligence, we can't find him?
Germany is in better shape as to reject the claim from Raymond.  Secondly, most of what Americans do is try to help countries that ask for our help.  True as it may seem that Afghanistan did not ask for our help, but since Osama decided to start this war way before 9-11 as we just simply let him do so for some odd reason.  Believe it or not but the WTC was hit before 9-11 it just didn't do any damage as they would haved liked to do.  Now as some people may think that we want to change releigon that is ridiculus, The main thing is for us to stopped getting attacked from extremists and their ideology that everyone is evil unless you think like them.

Now more specifically, pakistan with nukes is a dangerous situation all in it self.  What we should fear worse is this group getting nukes from Iran, even though they say it is for peace.  It never turns out that way when countries want to get rid of other countries and Iran and N. Korea will do what they can to get these types of weapons in to the hands of any one to turn a profit or just becuase they want to help out their friends.  Its a shame realy especially since the first five chapters out of the Bible, Koran, and the Tora are all the same thing :).  Literacy is the key for the extremists that can think on their own.
Paul/Ohio---what did taliban have to do with 9/11? please enlighten me.
Please....5000 yrs of "tradition", their tradition is self preservation. It had to be, because they were a conquered people from the age of empires! "pastunwali"-"hospitality – to turn away a guest, regardless of his past, would bring dishonor and shame." They would slice the throat of any westerner or hold them for ransom. They are selective so long as it serves their purposes. These are warlords. Controllers of the heroin trade for 5000 years. Our bombing them has only fueled their fire. Old "W" is a clown, because he (like his father) didn't pull the trigger on these guys when he had the chance. He unleashed the dogs of war without a clue! If ya nuked that area, what would you have lost? Poppy fields and the drug trade routes? Maybe ole' W has investments in things other than oil????
What is wrong with you bleeding heart liberals?  These people mean everything they say, they hated americans long before we were in their countries, they will use nuclear weapons against us as soon as they get them, they hate the united states of america and everything it stands for.  The only way you safeguard against this is to take it to them before they bring it to you.
To all you IDIOTS on here who are Pro Taliban, and to you's who say that Americans killed innocent people, Americans don't kill innocent people on purpose you idiot. So I guess all those people in the Twin Towers were not innocent, and they were all killed on purpose. What would you do if you were over there fighting, and all the bad guys hide behind innocent people all the time. It is very hard when you are trying to kill the bad guys that are hiding behind children and women, and it is hard to tell who is the enemy and who is not. You would surly be killed by a child with a bomb strapped to him... Those people over there don't care about anyone but them selves, they don't care that they kill innocent people, they don't care who they kill. All the good countries are over there to stop them from killing each other, and Americans,Brit's,and all the other contries soldiers are getting killed for it. Just like he said , if they had Nukes, they would use them, thats pretty sad to think like that. Just goed to show the world that they don't give 2 shts about anyone, just their pride, and false prophet.. War has been going on over there for 1000's of years, because they are animals, they have no morals at all, only what they believe in,and don't care about what other people believe in. Americans and NATO Contries let people be people, and praise the way they want to praise God. Why do you think God chose those Contries over there to start religion, because he knew they were all savages, and saw that they were always killing each other, and look at them all now, still the same way...
Wow a journalist can find some of the people our U.S. led military can not.Maybe we should hire him, before they get the nukes or find out who he paid for his information!
I agree wholeheartedly with Dan(Virgina).  A more Barry Goldwater approach is needed in dealing with the Taliban, Al-Qaida and the rest of the turd world who wish to turn the entire planet into some sort of global caliphate.  The U.S. should move away from the P.C. arena and get back to a more militant state of mind concerning the waging of war. Complete and total destruction of terror mechanisms can be done. However, the sissy boys in the administration and the pentagon left there cajones on the clothes line at home.  What a shame.

"Moral courage is the most valuable and usually the most absent characteristic in men."
- General George S. Patton, Jr

Some of the things I read about people's attitudes towards out military actions amaze me.  People act like we were minding our own business and then attacked on 9/11.  America has been telling other people and countries how to act so we can keep the oil coming cheap and easy.  Why have we not invaded Saudi Arabia where most radical schools are setup, etc?  Because they are our oil buddies and the right people are making a lot of money off of it.  I love America and wouldn't want to be any place else!  I am nothing more than your average consumer but I have become fed up with being lied to about why we do this and that.  I know that America does a lot of good around the world but we are in a bad situation that is going to ruin our economy and ruin a great country for future generations.
Hey Raymond, THEY ATTACKED US FIRST, remember. They would still hate us even if we left the Middle East!!!
i see commander faqir is upset about his people being caught up in the crossfire of war, they should have though about that when they crashed those planes(911),those people were also innocent.after awhile even a mountain cave won't be safe to hide in.so they feel they need a bomb to set things right?be careful what you pray for faqir, you might just get one.
There is no valid comparison between Japan/Germany in WWII and AFghanistan today.  Dan of VA, war has changed dramatically and today's war is unconventional and requires unconventional methods to wage this war.  "Why will no one learn from history"??????  Your foolishness is combined with hypocrisy.
Someone needs a reality check, nukes.....what about paki nukes....when we bomb them...suppose a mad paki dictator turns a few loos change nukes over to the terrorists...what then....deja vu
Raymond in NY. South Korea seems to be doing OK and we have had a military presence there for quite some time. I know the US is not perfect but who else sends their own to die for another. If we left the world alone like you suggest then more innocent people would die at the hands of others. do you not believe that? We are fighting insects who care nothing for their own people. That is why they fire grenades and missiles from schools and neighborhoods knowing that innocents will die from a retaliation. they speak of God punishing the infidels but I look at it like our military is the wrath of God crushing the iniquities of evil men.
Dan in Virginia is unfortunately correct - the enemy knows that EVERYONE is a target when it comes to war.  We can pick off the leaders and such one by one, but that will not send the message that we used to win our previous wars.  War is not a pretty thing and cannot be made civilized or humane.  Fighting how we are right now will only keep our troops there longer and put them in more danger.
It's really sad what happened to all those innocent people during 9/11, but the majority of american don't ever think of all the atrocities the american government does. Thousands of people die during the 80' in El Salvador and Nicaragua a war that was supported by the Reagan administration, the overthrown of Noriega in Panama and there many more examples. It is sad to say it but America had it coming. U.S. is a manipulative nation that thinks that can go around oppresing other countries.
america is living in glass house and love to throw stone,if u caan take blow dont throw no blow.
I cannot be but surprised at the way the Taliban will portray their efforts as being just and noble because the US has bombed places where non-combatants have been injured, or killed. It has to make one wonder where those suicide bombers that blowup markets and buses with non-combatants being the targets come from. The Taliban claim that they are doing the will of Allah, yet according to the Koran, no Moslem is supposed to harm another. Yet, these very self-proclaimed servants of Allah, would repress there own people to prevent them from learning that a government of the people and by the people, is not just composed of religious fanatics that use that control to further their own and not Allah's ends. The article mentioned how women are willing to sacrifice themselves as martyrs as well, but it fails to mention that in most cases they are either coerced, or paid to become suicide bombers. The problems created here are called ones of religious persecution by Christians of Moslems, yet it is these very same Moslems that are using their religion as an excuse to harm those that are not a threat, simply as a means toward instilling fear and horror in people. The Taliban are not about religion, they are about power, it is not enough for westerners to be accepting and tolerant of other religions, they must bow down, convert to Islam and let people like the Taliban dictate their lives to serve those in power. Faqir states that all Moslems should unite to remove all foreigners from their borders, yet he failed to mention how the Sunni's and Shiites would willingly kill each other over religious differences. The only justice that people like Faqir understand comes out of the end of a gun, so lets help him out by letting him stand in front of one. One last thing, when is it that the Faqirs of the world are willing to strap on a bomb and blow themselves up, it is only the fanatic, or ignorant that are talked into it, not the Faqir's of the world.
shame on msnbc for doing this interview without giving his position to th eu.s army so we could arrest this man. nbc just put soldiers lives at risk who die trying to secure freedom for the u.s.a and its reporters who are as bad as the enemy.
Yes - that is what we need - another peace loving administration like the Carter years....someone who will sit down and really listen to the problems of our enemies.   Once we show them we understand they will stop bombing our barracks and embassies and we can all live peacefully.   I dread the next administration no matter who gets elected....
america is living in glass house and love to throw stone,if u caan take blow dont throw no blow.
Thank you "Dan from Virginia". It isn't that we have forgoten how to wage war, it is that we have to be so "politically correct" in fighting a war. Either fight it indiscriminately, or get out. That is war.

Steve from Pa.
Misinformation come in many forms.  The last statement of name one country that is better off after the Americans left.  You can go back to Germany and Japan.  We rebuilt their country and their economy after WWII.  Korea after the Korean War.  I have lived and worked in Afghanistan for the last five years.  Not in Military Compounds but on the local economy. The vast majority of tyhe Afghanistans want America there.  As in all things we have done both good and bad projects.  Overall we are helping a country stabilize and rebuild itself after 30 years of war and destruction.  Yes peopls get killed but it is not the Americans that use civilians and childrens as shields.
These people are scary, but as far as I know we haven't bombed Pakistan - maybe the Pakistani military did this.  I would be very sorry if we did bomb a school and kill students, and I know that our bombs have killed children in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Unfortunately innocent people die in war, I don't think there's any way you can get around it.  And the Taliban don't lose sleep over any innocent that gets caught in the crossfire.  That stuff about not being able to offend a guest is just bull-I don't believe it for a minute.  They invited Al-Quaida in, that tells you where their loyalties really lie.  They want peace on THEIR terms, not peace in general, don't make a mistake about that.
This lying jackal talks about not allowing someone to dishonor or humiliate their guests but fails to remember that there were thousands of our guests in the WTC on 9/11/01.  He talks of our killing innocent women and children but fails to remember the innocents in the WTC.  His suicidal swine kill with their bombs anyone who is around regardless of idiology.
Our biggest problem is that the USA tries to have a rational response to an irrational group.  We have the means to stop this foolishness but won't because we don't want to kill innocents.  They, on the other hand, hide behind women and children, using them as sheilds hoping that we will accidentally kill their sheilds so they can point the finger at us saying we kill innocents.
As we continue in this ill advised "sanitary war" we fail to remember that when we kill one of those dogs, his friends and family do not think about how he deserved what he got or that he was trying to kill the person who killed him, they only remember that it was because of America.  In that, we are exactly the same as them.
Well this is in response to all you nieve fruit-cakes.  I will be the first to admit that the war in Iraq has been a mistake.  I will not be so nieve to think that if we leave the middle east that all our problems with the taliban, and al-Qaida will suddenly just dissapear.  For those of you who think that way just a quick question for you... Where were our troops on the day of September 11, 2001?  Not fighting in Afghanistan.  These cultures have been brought up for centuries to hate Americans.  Yet, you all think that leaving Afghanistan will stop all these people from wanting to kill innocent people around the world.  Open your eyes!  When you walk around with your eyes closed you are eventually going to trip and fall no matter what.  These terrorist groups are not going to just give up or forget they hate us.  I am for a safer world, and anyone who threatens that with terror to any country not just the U.S. should be dealt with.  So go ahead close your eyes people.  It will all happen again.  Sad that you all seem to have forgotten the threat posed by these radical groups.
Up in the mountains and in caves is where I prefer these radical, hate filled, maniacs.  They openly admit their desire to kill us and to murder innocent people who do not share their ideology.  They want nothing to do with freedom, liberty, equality, opportunity, and the restoration of this world.  These radicals aim to accomplish their ideals through terror and fear as evidenced by their cruelty to women, children, and those they once had influence over.  They had their opportunity and proved themselves to be brutal by the attrocities comitted against the innocent Afghans.  Freedom is not free and I hope our government continues to keep these cowards who suicide bomb, hide behind women and children, and terrorize people, on the fringes.
If these idiots want nucular weapons so bad prehaps we should send them a few ICBM's. Their parents aparently never told them that if you play with fire you get burnt.
Dan from Virginia is the only one making sense here.
War is not sterile.  GPS-guided missiles cannot win wars.  There is a reason we haven't won a major conflict since WWII.  We have lost the political will to fight as ruthlessly as the enemy.  I fully support the special forces approach on a tactical level.  But winning hearts and minds fails at the strategic level.  Massive, unrelenting destruction of the enemy and it's population is the only winning strategy.
your ancestors came here and bullied their way in and took away our land, customs, language.  When will they ever mind their own business?  from a Lakota from south dakota.
One word MOAB! ( That's Mother of all BOMBS for those of you who don't know )
nuke em and get it over with before they do it to us.
Habits create character, and your character is your destiny. The good news is we can  all change our habits. The same God will judge me as he will judge Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri and Mullah Omar and all of their mis lead followers. Are these men developing good habits and daily character by killing people daily just because they do not share the same religious beliefs. God will see your true character and be the final judge. Not your bombs, bullets, and hatred for your fellow man. Remember the good news is you can change your bad habits for all things are possible through "God".
MAKE A NEW 'SWIMMING HOLE' OUT OF AFGHANISTAN
So you're saying we need displays of power to scare our enemies into submission? They won't fight us because they will be in terror of us? I thought we were supposed to fight against terrorism, not perform it.

When the carrot runs out for United States and isolation by the rest of the world sets in, hunger and pestilence will make up the American's minds to again invite/permit a more forcefull U.S. military leader to take charge. Odd how we are no better... The citizens of this country need to wake up and realize our "freedom" is being traded on the open market and we are not receiving the benefits. We need to take back our government now! Our children will not have that option...

If the U.S. would actually follow thru and complete what we say we are going to do it is highly possible that half of all the problems we face not only in the middle east but every place else would not exist.
It should be that if we say we are going to do something than you should be able to look at it as money in the bank, and not idle rhetoric which we are so famous for.
As a student of history, civilizations who are no longer willing to export their base theology (democratic rule of law here in the USA) will be consumed by those civilizations that are willing to force their views on others. Just look at the total lack of freedom of choice especially toward women of the hard core Muslim theologies. Every wonder why so many people condemn the actions of the USA, it is because it is not only allowed but our right to question our leaders. Over there you question, you die. One last comment if their way of life is so great why don’t they have immigration problems? Remember 911 enough said.
