Examining trends in European terror

Last year saw several large-scale and highly publicized terrorist plots in Europe. There was the failed attempt to set off car bombs in London, including outside a busy nightclub on June 29; an attack on the Glasgow airport that ended in a nasty fire and a roundup of several suspects, most of whom worked in the U.K. in the medical profession; and arrests in Germany of young suspects who had been to Pakistan recently, allegedly for terrorist training, accused of plotting to attack U.S. interests.

These three cases attracted global attention, but would you believe that there were actually 583 failed, foiled or successfully executed terrorist attacks in the EU last year alone? That is about a 25 percent jump over 2006, according to the latest EU report on terrorism, released earlier this month.

More than simply a list of numbers and dates – its contents, compiled by Europol, are intriguing.

It paints a picture of suspected terrorist activities and trends in Europe.  And what happens there is significant to the rest of the world.  We've seen Europe become a first stop, in the exportation of terror from suspected training camps in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

It is the closest "West" for terrorists to target.  Where cells have taken root and where homegrown recruits have been a problem.

But don't assume that all, or even most, of those 583 terrorist plots were by suspected Islamic terrorists – only four of them were so categorized  – less than one percent.

The majority – 517 – were attributed to separatist groups in Spain and France.

More, by the numbers:

  • There were 1,044 arrests for terrorist activities, a nearly 50 percent increase over the prior year. In the U.K., the vast majority of its 203 arrests last year were of suspected Islamic extremists.
  • The majority of arrests were EU citizens.
  • There were 34 arrests of women.
  •  There were 331 convictions.
  • England now identifies more than 2,000 people as terror suspects. In 2001, there were 250.

And there are a few new trends at work, that were identified in the past year as well.  The lengthy report is full of specific information, but here are some points we don't always see:

  •  Most arrests were in France, Italy and Spain.
  •  The threat of Islamic attack in Europe remains high.
  • There has been an increase in what is considered home-grown terror.
  •   There is a new category of Islamic terror: spreading propaganda.
  •   Iraq attracted the highest number of terror recruits coming from EU states and   venturing there to fight.
  • Somalia has become a new destination for jihad.
  • Pakistan remains the hotbed for command, control, and planning of Islamic extremist attacks.

On the subject of spreading propaganda, England has been cracking down, making arrests for recruitment and posting information on Web sites in the U.K. Some groundbreaking cases have resulted.

And European authorities have reported that in the last year there was an enormous increase in the amount of Islamic "propaganda" available on European Web sites; a cause for concern, though obviously still a big grey area. There has been much debate over where the line exists between free speech, and spreading propaganda.

I would like to thank Michelle Kosinski and anyone who may have helped for compiling this information. I have found that it's not always easy to find.
And yet we make it harder for people to get back in here after 9 days of overstaying their passport? My fiance overstayed her passport by 9 days. She can't back here to get away from a thug that has attacked her. I overstayed in Europe by 13 months and have been in and out of there will be my 5th time. Give me a break USA. See, they have it worse there then we do and yet you won't let a 48 yr old woman travel here?
I only have one word for Europe "FITNA".
Ohhh wait a minute....Now I've been told by so many that terrorism is because of the US doing wrong in the Mid East???? Now you're trying to tell me that the terrorist will continue to fight, destroy, and kill NO MATTER if we leave Iraq with our tails in between our legs asking for them to be nice??? Well, that's not what Obama is saying, he seems to think that when we immediately withdraw from Iraq that terrorism will end immediately! The terrorist just aren't playing FAIR!!!  What are we scared, helpless American's going to do now?!?!?! Help me Barak! PLEASE!
I HAVE 1 WORD FOR YOUR ARTICLE: PROPAGANDA
We all know that "terrorist threats & attacks are orchestrated by rogue elements of the Inteligence Community from several countries.
Dont belive this? Google "Operation Gladio" that infamous Op that western countries used back in the 70's & 80's to blame leftists organizations from kidnappings to bombs on civillian population.
The main Terrorist entitities right now are: The CIA & The Mossad.Period
Wow, that report doesn't even really define terrorism unless one accepts that " terrorism is a tactic to a method for attaining political goals ". That would be overly broad and include normal nonviolent methods such as voting as terrorism.

And these guys are gonna protect us and they can not even define terrorism in a report.
page 9 : section 3.1 : Definitions; Terrorism:::: Sorry to be picky but..... how about an actual definition of terrorism!!!!!
Solution is very simple.

Handle Saudi Arabia - The epicenter of ideological terror.

Handle Pakistan- The epicenter of terror training.

If u can handle this two countries.. all terror will go from this world.
Gee, Joe, do you think maybe "they have it worse then (sic) we do" because our rules are more strict? And I am sorry your fiancee has been attacked by a thug - but how does that become "our" responsibility?

Rules are rules. People need to follow them instead of whining about how unfair they are or coming up with reasons why the rules don't apply to them.
Wow!! great article--I wish we would stop referring to them as terrorists--they truely are cowards --hiding their faces during the nite and being our friends durning the day--these zelots are really the most cowardly group this world has ever encountered. killing by sneak attacks; killing without discriminating; hiding like cowards; they are a sad disturbed group.
However more of our citizens are killed in Washington DC than in the Iraq war.

hey maybe we should pull out of Washington DC!!!!!!
Look if America did not exist tomorrow terrorism would not stop these terrorist want to end the free world as it exist today. We can not and will not let that happen.
obama is a terrorist trying to get into the white house to finish off 911!
To Wellwisher:

You left out one part of the equation:  Before we can handle Saudi Arabia, we first have to become energy-independent....
The nation of ISLAM has a few demands of the west.
Osama  will insure our security, we are only required to agree to all of his demands.
Come on you will like the new Islamic world order, especially you western women. All you need to do is give up your freedom. Such a small price to pay for our security and world peace.
PEOPLE ARE UNHOOKING FROM THE MATRIX... WAKING UP TO WHO THE REAL TERRORIST ARE...

THE WORLD BANKS AND SOLD OUT GOVERNMENTS.

WELCOME TO THE REVOLUTION
Propaganda, I dont think so.
Has the CIA been covert and provocative, oh yes.
Can we solve global terrorsim militarily, no.
Can we expend significant lives and money trying, yes.
Are there other options, yes. Can we try options, yes.
Do we then become the target of our war mongers, yes.
Even more extreme methods have been tried before, to control assailants (scorced earth) to no avail.
Take the lesson of Marcus Aurelius, sick of war, sick of life at the front, he contronted enimies, found what drove their violence, it had cassualities, yes, but far fewer than war, and in the acheived some peace but was killed by his OWN people.
Courage and intellect, beware of blood-thirst, no matter what the cause.

Wasn't it Jefferson who said "Those who would sacrifice a little freedom for security deserve neither freedom nor security"?

Wahabbism does indeed come from Saudi roots, long before Saudi Arabia came into existence; but it is only a small, but vocal and dangerous, portion of Islam, which does not condone such violence. As long as we remain depenent upon them for oil and strategic bases, we'll never be free of terrorism; but even if we were to sever ties completely, Wahabbists will only be satisfied when the entire world is Islam - that's their holy quest.

We have a hard enough time keeping church and state separated here in the US - no wonder they can move around the world at will, when we splutter and whine about the likes of Rev. Wright.
Why are we contributing to terrorism by bombing innocent people in their own country?  Why don't we attempt to educate the son's and daughters of terrorists so they can make a wise decision instead of join a cause that leaves no other option?
Joe- How did you fiance overstay her passport?  A tourist VISA is good for 6 months.  Surely, barring sudden freak airport emergencies, you could have planned to follow the rules.  My wife is an immigrant, I've had to deal with this stuff plenty.  The US immigration system is fair, though we should try to be more attractive to people with college education.  Not that they are more valuable, but they give us a competitive advantage in engineering and science.

Canada and Europe seem friendlier now, but that's just because the shock of sudden wild immigration hasn't hit them yet.  Already both are talking about adopting stricter standards.

And cut it out, losers.  Obama is not a muslim, and even if he was, that doesn't make him a bad guy, unamerican, or a bad president.
People are afraid because our government taught us to be afraid. The terrorists who hit the twin towers were trained in the United States.  Where was our FBI then?  Now we suspect EVERYONE of terrorism.  We do not trust our neighbors.  I must agree with the Goat Farmer from Kenya about Obama...he IS truly a Muslim and is hiding his true identity.  GET A CLUE BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!
There are so many people coming into our two countrys that it is almost impossible to tell just who there are. These people blend in and who knows you might even work with one or maybe one is your neighbor. Scary.
