Unexplained suicide spike in U.K. county

 LONDON – "Everyone around here is doing it."

"It has become a trend."

"I have thought about doing it myself."

Somehow, these are all quotes from teenagers, talking about – suicide.

Since the start of 2007, 19 teenagers and young adults have taken their own lives in the tiny towns scattered through the southern Welsh county of Bridgend, where people have been living along the Ogmore River for centuries. Total population: around 130,000.

The rash of suicides has been an unsettling story, to say the least, here in the U.K.

To see the faces of victims, sweetly smiling in photos all in a row, leaves an empty feeling – they are so many, and so young.

The most recent suicide was less than a week ago. Sean Rees, 19 years old, was found hanging from a tree in the woods near his house. His friends described him as happy, and doing well – he had just gotten his driver’s license and a car.

Only about a week before, Michelle Sheldon, 23, died in the hospital three days after she was found hanged.

One by one, young people have suddenly taken their own lives here – some right on the heels of another death. And as staggering as these numbers are, there have been attempted suicides as well.

In January, the day after one 17-year-old girl hanged herself in her bedroom, her 15-year-old friend tried to do the exact same thing. She survived, but spent days in intensive care after her father found her and managed to cut her down in time. That same weekend, another of her friends also attempted to kill herself.

Internet connection
It seems unfathomable that something as irreversible, as final, as suicide could "catch on" among kids, as if it were another simply another destructive habit like binge drinking.

Police have formed a special task force, and have been investigating various scenarios including a rumored suicide pact among as many as six of the recent victims. Still, it all remains an eerie, terribly sad mystery.

One thing many experts seem certain of: it is a copycat or cluster phenomenon. And many believe that social networking sites on the Internet have raised teens’ interest in, and even fascination or obsession with, the cases, and may even be influencing the spate of suicides.

A number of the victims’ friends have left elaborate tributes Internet networking sites, and the idea that some of the messages may be glamorizing the deaths, has police and counselors worried. When suicide equals instant "fame" and shocking attention, there is the risk, oddly, of attraction to it. Counselors say the teens who fixate on the deaths could be at greater risk of following that same dark path.

Some investigators think the only link among all of these tragic cases might be those Web sites.

Anne Marie, a Welsh seventeen-year-old, told her local newspaper, "It has become a cool thing to do in our area – I have thought about doing it myself."

Cool? As much as psychologists and experts have tried to make some sense of the string of deaths, for many it seems almost impossible to grasp.

No explanation
Is there some statement on society here, on death and extremes and publicity and fame? Or on hopelessness among people this young, with such possibilities ahead of them?

When you look at the town of Bridgend, it's industrial, has its share of economic problems, but unemployment there isn't any worse than other similar towns in that region. But those other towns don't have a suicide rate as high as Bridgend.

It's rate has jumped to 43 per 100,000, among males 15 to 24, over the last decade. That's more than double the Welsh national rate of 19 per 100,000 for that group – even though Wales' rate is already twice that of the U.K. as a whole.

No one seems confident enough in any specific theory to make grand pronouncements or explanations. Maybe there never will be a way to comprehend this fully. One teen in the area who had tried to kill herself, after the death of one of her friends, told her parents she didn't really know why she, too, attempted it.

Counselors in school are working on prevention. They’re warning teenagers about what they call the "dangers" of the social networking sites – and warning parents to monitor them closely.

Still, the little county of Bridgend, dotted by ancient castles, is at a loss. The suicides keep happening. Nineteen of its young people, gone – in just over a year.

A tough topic to read but well reported. I'm surprised, as the internet has grown over the years, that certain elements or sites have not been publicly decried and shunned. There is too little criticism of the human toll taken by a variety of websites that engage in manipulating the fragile minds and spirit of our youth. Than you for bringing this to light.

A 15 year old girl in our small community of Williamsburg, VA, killed herself last month, I really feel for the parents.

I don't have all the answers, but maybe training teachers and students on ways too identify students that need help, would go a long way.

What a terrible tragedy, the incident has made me more aware of depression effecting my teens.

This is an undescribable tragedy.  I would love to go over and counsel and be there to help this epidimic.  Do some volunteering.  I would love to.
I am wary of any stories that blame the internet for social tragedies. Usually, when governments have a crack-down in mind on something that bothers THEM as in too much freedom for the individual, the first thing that happens is a number of "true stories" on the "issue" suddenly hitting the headlines.
Life has been devalued in western society by our own actions; abortion on demand, parents lack of involvement in there childrens activities and circle of friends, and divorce has become a way to solve marital problems. We live in a thow-away world, life is just another thing we are throwing away.
SUICIDE HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR AS LONG AS THERE HAVE BEEN PEOPLE AROUND TO COMMIT IT. IT IS COMING TO LIGHT BECAUSE WE HAVE THE INTERNET AND "MYSPACE" TO REPORT SUCH INCIDENTS. GRANTED TEEN SUICIDE IS MORE COMMON NOW THAN EVER, WE CAN ONLY BLAME OURSELVES. PUTTING TEENS ON MIND-ALTERING SUBSTANCES WHICH ARE BARELY EVEN LOOKED AT WHEN SHIPPED FROM BORDER TO BORDER IS A BIG PART OF WHAT'S GOING ON. THERE ARE JUST TOO MANY THINGS NOW-ADAYS TO PROVOKE THESE KINDS OF THINGS.
It's all relative! One must choose for themselves what is right or wrong. No one can determine what is right or wrong for me.

Do not shake your heads and wonder what's going on...use reason...think about it.

Pholoshy and ethics... either it's ALL relative or there is a TRUTH that all ought to answer to

You can't have it both ways!
This is terrible to hear about, and my condolences go out to all of the family members that have lost loved ones.

This may sound far-fetched, but perhaps there may be some link between the suddenly high incidents of suicide and antidepressants or other pharmaceuticals in the water supply.

The area is industrial and perhaps there is manufacturing run-off. It's fairly common knowledge that water treatment facilities don't filter or screen for pharmaceuticals; teens and young adults are at high risk for suicidal thoughts and actions that are associated side effects of many prescription antidepressants.

I can't think of any other logical explanation- not everyone who is doing this is posting it on networking sites or can explain exactly why they are attempting to do it. It's worth looking into.
Sorry to hear about this.....but it is no surprise to me that kids today are going this far.....my point is..that when I was young....we used to go to the 'movies' ..to see "Batman...Sky King..Rocket man...or whatever!!"...  Well....after we had gone to the movies....we would go home...and "mimic" WHAT WE HAD SEEN! "  Whether it was WAR...or Cowboys and Indians........!!   We would go out in the woods...........and play  what we just saw in the movies!!!!!!     Duuuuuhhhhhh!! Today....with home PC's...not to mention "ARCADES".....It is  NO wonder that our  YOUNG society is DELUGED with this crap....not only from FOLLYWOOD.... but from any other NERD that can create a program that they think will sell on the net so that the creator  will make megabucks.                WELL....As for me...this is just the type of crap that our parents told us to stay away from in the "OLD" days!!!
Shady characters...pool hall bums....etc.etc.... now we havc drugs..and God knows whatever else!!!
This is the price we have to pay for a "free" society.... well....lemme tell-ya  folks....it won't be much longer till WE are no longer a free society...I would suggest any parent here to have their children to learn Chinese....NOT Spanish!!  I have said my piece.....Lets see what the future brings...
Self-destructive behaviors can be the results of many emotional or mental disturbances caused by external circumstances.  They could be temporary, but young people may not know how to cope with them.  They need loving guidance and parenting from souls who understand and are responsible enough to come to their aid.  No situation is ever hopeless, if we possess the tools and spiritual resources to restore a favorable vision for ourselves, but young people need help doing so.  I do remember reading about similar outbreaks of despair, dementia and suicide in small towns in France.  In their case it was finally diagnosed as allergic reactions to the yeasts and molds found in the grains [primarily rye] grown in the region where they lived.  Before families and friends in the area despair of finding solutions for their young people, the epidemiologists and sociologists ought to step in immediately to discern if the difficulties faced in Bridgend are not caused by something as easily overlooked as a common spore.
Dan. Pharmaceuticals in the water supply are only found at levels hundreds of thousands of times below medically active levels. Don't be a fear-monger, please. And don't say "its worth looking into" when it's clearly not. Unless you are a chemist, you can't possibly make such statements.
People forget that suicide is not only common among teens but also the elderly.
There are so many more demands on kids today than there were even 10 years ago, they are not prepared to deal with lifes issues at such a young age, no one is to blame except civilization progressing.
Life hard but sweet
omg!!! thats soo stupid!! how in the wrold could they even THINK thats cool???? i would never in a million years do that JUST for attention!! if they wasntd that much attention then why cant they just like do something crazy like... i dunno something stupid like go down a esclator while riding a shopping cart. MUCH less dangerous. whatever. those brits are crazy. :)
~~~lilly~~~~
I support the statements of Jane Doe of Seattle.  Fear fear fear to control--the new (?) American way.  Blaming the internet is a pretty easy cop-out and a shallow--no, non-existent--analysis.
Then there is Dan Devine trying to link women's right to be steward of her own internal organs to teen suicide.  ???  I agree, sir, that we live in a throw-away world.  So are you voting for pro-environment candidates and avoiding the big box stores? I agree that parents need to be involved in kids' lives, so are you supporting those who support things like family leave, flex time, and equal pay for equal work?  Or do you instead support those right-wing reactionaries who try to squelch those very things, using your fear of women's independence as a smoke screen?  And this article is about Wales.  How up ARE you on women's rights policies in Wales, anyway?
Maybe that is why teens kill themselves.  They see too clearly what a mess the grown-ups have created through their greed, indifference, and delusions.  It is going to take a lot of energy for their generation to clean up what they have inherited.  They need us to be role models who will not bend our backs out of fear, and they need nourishment.  That means emotional nourishment, intellectual nourishment (not jiggling bimbos and car explosions on tv),  and real food (not corn syrup and MSG). A kid needs to be a real seeker to get those basic, healthy things these days, and to get validation for making smart choices rather than easy ones. I don't know about Wales, but our culture is not offering smart and healthy options readily. Quite conversely, choosing wisely makes you a social outcast in some circles.
And things are not going to change unless the kids and adults alike *make* them change.  --because if too many people stop sleeping, if too many people cleanse their brains of the neurotoxins in processed food and the poison of advertising illusions...the charade is toasted and people-gasp--might learn something of REAL "empowerment."   Can't have that.
The kids just feel the effects of all the dis-empowerment, and when you have not lived a lot of years, it is easy to think that things will always be as they are now, since that is all you have known.  Show them you will not bend to be one of the disempowered, and they will realize that they can be strong and true, too, without being alone.
Computer is part of it.
Parents losing control is part of it too.
So many forces unraveling the fabric of society. Bad schools where families can not get to know each other and keep track of who there kids are hanging out with. Two working parents. High divorce rates..
Bill Clinton once said...A kid has to know that he is the most important thing in the world to someone. Today parents are so distracted.I'm sure these parnts loved their kids, But for some reason they became disillusioned with themselves or failed to grasp the permancy and immediacy of their desicions.Parents do not hae the tools to combat this problem.
Northern climates are especially vulnerable to this kind of behavior.. this time of year after the long winter and depletion of Vitamin D Stores. kids are phisicvcally less able to handle the stress and become overwhelmed. Teachers need to lighten up and corporations need to keep jobs and hope alive in these regions. Every ten jobs lost brings another suicide.
I make sure my kids get plenty of Vitemin D and try to get them to Florida at least for a week. If they start to falter in school I act fast to turn things around to head off despair.
I know this story well I lost a brother at 19 and a brother in law at 45.
Common sense would suggest that there must be serious deep rooted psychological probelms to explain such suicides amongst young people.  Or if it was caused by a 'trendy' thing or internet sites,unemployment etc why isnt there a national epidemic?  The only logical explanation seems to be chemical induced mentail illness causing severe depression, This could be drugs related!   There is growing evidence that the use of popular drugs such as cannabis and ecstasy are causing severe depression due to the effects of dopamin depletion in the brain.  Lets be open and objective and not constrained by PC when considering these alternative explanations.
Yes, this is sad but what everybody not seeing the big picture is that all parents,goverments and exspecially in the US goverment. has taken the foundation of GOD out of everything. And these parent are to be blame because they did not want to raised their children like their parents raised them with a firm hand. because parents wanted to be their friend and not the firm parents and instill in there children that they truly loved them. and the foundation of the love that GOD has for each one of us. there are so many children out there lookin to fit in to such a culture is nothing but destuctive. YOU say NO! where you been in a comma. look at TV,newspapers,mag, your either told you fat or ugly or you not skinny enough. your not cool because you do not wear hi-priced everything and should be like mike. and children watch TV/internet and see coruption running ramped in every part of our goverments, officials in city,local offices.
So children, young adults decide why bother living in this world. and all those experts out their saying it the internet give me a frackin break. all the wonderful world of the internet and all those technologies where to help people get more done, but it's done is help those preverts,child molesters and all the others get closer to the kids that are raising themself and alone and want to be loved and have someone care about them and for who they are. because their parents are not there, they are working so the goverment can tell others how they should act and what to do. when in our own country there plenty of thing to be fixed but, the goverment do not care about its people they only care about what they can do for themselfs... So i recommend to all who read this buy guns and ammo and put them up because soon the goverments that are currently under satan direction will be getting numbers and if you do not do as your told they have to murder you or bring back the consentration camps. And yes I believe in GOD and try my best to what he expects me to do and I'm not prefect but if anyone is awake out there you know all the things that are written in revelation and slowly showing themselfs and coming true.
My father was a victim of a suicide, so i can relate to what they are saying in the article above. But blaming the internet social networking sites is them trying to push the blame onto something else, they should try and find the "real" cause of all of these deaths instead of just trying to blame. I may not have all the information, but from what I have read on the subject, they dont seem to have been doing that much to stop any of these radndom suicides. Sure, they created a task force, but they should do more than that. If the government there was really interested in helping then they would take more extensive measures in order to ensure that this so called "cool" trend does not continue. This is a disgusting waste of human life and all they can do is talk, debate about what they can do, and then implement their half hearted plan to help the youth of this country. Every action speaks a thousand words, so go do something to help isntead of talking about it. Do something more extensive than creating a task-force to monitor and study the situation.
It's the LACK of antidepressant prescribing in the UK among kids---when they are freely prescribed, suicide rates go DOWN.
There aren't many decent jobs in Bridgend and the surrounding area.  It used to be a major coal-mining area until all the pits closed.  Like it says, Wales has twice the suicide rate of the rest of the UK.  It's just the epicentre really.  When you're talking about numbers in the dozens it's hard to infer anything statistically.  Next year it could be Cardiff or Swansea.
I don't honestly think most Americans can relate to this situation as coal-mining was a nationalised industry on a massive scale until Thatcher decided the country just couldn't afford it anymore when the price of coal kept going down.
Watch the movie: "Brassed Off!" with Ewan McGregor and you'll have a better insight.
When I was a teenager, I repeatedly contemplated suicide.  My parents would never have understood.  They thought they gave me everything.  They did, materially.  They even gave me love.  They just never gave me the one thing that makes life bearable:  self worth.  To make me a better person they constantly complained to me about everything I ever did.  We could never go anywhere except I got a long lecture on the way home as to all the things I had done wrong while out.  When I brought home a test from school where I got 99%, all they did was scream at me that I should not have been so stupid as to miss that one question.  They taught me no social skills, they gave me no reason to think I would ever be anything.  Indeed, they constantly told me I never would amount to anything unless I changed, whatever.  How could these kids kill themselves when they have all their futures ahead of them?  Because they don't believe they have a future.  They just see decades of survival when they already hate their life.  I wished I had never been born, and it took me 50 years to change my mind.  If you want kids to live, give them something to live for.
This is crazy, I spent quite a bit of time visiting friends in Bridgend during university, it was no more depressing or suicide-inducing than any other place!  I don't know what is going on, these kids are only a few years younger than me, how can they think things are so bad already?
Somebody PLEASE examine the mental health-paediatric health care system in that immediate area and see if those young people are being prescribed SSRIs for typical adolescent depression or anxieties. SSRIs are definitely linked to suicides and homicides in adolescents.
Have they looked at medications?  I've had two prescriptions in the past that gave me thoughts of suicide, Ativan and Hismanal. Both after just 3 days into the medication.
I think what these suicidal teens in Wales need to know is that they are loved, that life is not so hopeless, and that suicide, aside from being PERMANENT, is also really not cool, since it creates ripples of despair among those who love them.  The world will get better, so just have faith.  It might also be a really good idea to pray for them, so that further "trendy tragedy" does not transpire.  As an earlier comment suggested, it might be worthwhile to look into any social, environmental, or psychological links between the people who have killed themselves, as well as those who have attempted or might attempt suicide.
I know all too well that life can seem bleak or unfair.  As an individual with Asperger's Syndrome, I struggled socially A LOT when I was young, and experienced much frustration from failing socially, functionally, and emotionally.  Fortunately nowadays, I have a far greater share of friends, good friends, and friendly acquaintances, so I don't feel lonely.  I have several things I'm really good at that people respect and value me for, so I no longer feel useless.  I have a wonderfully supportive family, so I know I am loved.  I have found God and have received the baptism, communion, and confirmation in the Holy Spirit, and pray often for those in need, so I know I have a mission in life, and reason to live.  I would say more about my struggles, my dark times, and how I overcame them, but this is not about me.
My point is, having secretly attempted and failed at suicide at age 13, then living on to lose family members and a few friends to various tragedies, and later discovering my worthy purpose in living, I learned that life is very short, and throwing away your life is a terrible sin.  If not an insult to God, the one who willed our existences to occur, it is an insult to all who love you...and trust me, they are out there.  I think these youth find suicide appealing because of something lacking in their lives that makes life seem expendable.  It is useless to cast blame on any given thing, because usually the thing being blamed is just a cop-out. However, if the reason for the suicides be the news, the local music scene, television, the town itself, negative messages about teens' futures, problems with parenting, or a weird cult (just to name some possibilities), something must be done about the harmful factor.
Keep in mind, any action taken must be well-thought out and reasoned, not just paranoia-soaked instant reaction.  Otherwise, the suicides only might only continue or grow in number rather than cease, widening the radius of self-destructiveness. In the meantime, I shall pray for answers to this distressing phenomena, and I encourage others reading this response to the above article to do the same.  May God comfort and guide those teens.
