Dar Fur Stars make music in Israel

TEL AVIV, Israel – How symbolic could this rehearsal be?

Standing next to one another on stage in Tel Aviv – dancing together and singing in perfect harmony – were the Dar Fur Stars, a band made up of Muslim refugees, and the Jewish group Aharit Hayamim (Redemption).

Ending their practice with both bands playing the theme music from "Schindler’s List," The Dar Fur Stars were preparing to join the Israelis in their celebration of Passover, which begins on Saturday at sundown and commemorates the biblical exodus from Egyptian slavery.

The unique pairing marks the end of a harrowing journey, which began when the twelve narrowly escaped the horrors of genocide in Darfur and eventually snuck through the Egyptian-Israeli border. An Israeli patrol picked them up and imprisoned them for three months.

It turned out that music was the answer to the boredom and misery. Bushra Musa, 34, found himself and his fellow inmates picking up sticks and using old pots as drums. Every night, he recalled, they would gather and play for hours. The seeds of the Dar Fur Stars were planted.

Shmuel Kau, a member of Aharit Hayamim, recalls that he saw a short story about the Dar Fur Stars on TV and it gave him the idea of inviting them to play together so that they could help the refugees reach a bigger audience.

"We Jews suffered so much," he said, "and this way we can help our brothers from Africa."

The stage at the Koltura nightclub was bursting with energy – and it was only 11 a.m. – as the bands were practiced together in anticipation of their upcoming concert.

Making time for the rehearsal was not easy for the refugees, who are all restaurant and hotel workers now and were missing out on important income. But the tee-shirts some of them are wearing, with the slogan "Darfur Genocide," indicate that their cause is more important than money.

Musa became choked up with tears as he tried to tell me about his family. After a long pause he related how his mother was too old to make the journey and is still in Sudan. And he is awaiting the release of his wife, who is still in the Israeli jail.

But at the same time, he is very happy to be in Israel, where he is free to play music forbidden in his homeland. (In Sudan, the government insists everyone should only sing in the Arabic language, which is not his traditional African tongue.)

And now Kau’s dream is to take the Dar Fur Stars on a world road trip and show how coexistence can work.

A light unto the Nations! Way to go Israel!
This is wonderful. I'm going to try and find a feed on this music now.  I hope and pray that all members are freed to live and breath Gods air as he intended. His merciful ways are unbounded, only by our feeble minds... Blessings a wanna be poet.
Time and time again, I'm reminded of why Israel and it's beautiful people, has a right to exist.
GOD informed Abraham that the Jews were to suffer. (Genesis)
Our suffering was purposed to make us a strong Nation.
Jesus will redeem us upon HIS return and the world will come to KNOW the truth.
We all need more stories like this: Schmuel Kau, who had the idea to contact the Dar Fur Stars and invite them to play with his band, Aharit Hayamim, is like the butterfly effect in chaos theory;  one musician has an idea and an impulse to act on it, and next thing you know, we are reading about an astonishing collaboration which showcases healing energy out of holocaustal destruction.
These musicians all deserve to be honored for the courage, endurance, and creative compassion their story embodies.  I want to hear their music.
What a concept, what a event!  Make music, not war!
I listened to the jam session....Shmuel Kau and Bushra Musa, how about recording your Koltura nightclub show, and making it available to the public?
This should be on the front page instead of all the violence and seeing how many people were killed yesterday. I ask this to the media: Why aren't we concentrating on the positive? Have you ever heard "you are what you speak"? Let's talk about this, how people are coexisting! Imagine a world without "religion" but open dialogue and a positive reinforcement on individual actions, instead of concentrating what the leader or some leaders of this group are saying. There are plenty of leaders of all faiths out there wanting better dialogue and coexistence. Let's talk. Don't let the "high school drama" keep going at such an important level. Break down the walls between your groups and help out another human being as these two groups have. "An eye for an eye makes the whole world go blind" M. Gandhi
I wish everyone would love one another instead of hate.  This is what JESUS was teaching even if you do not beleive. Beleive that Love Will Win in the End.
This is an amazing story. I hope that this story will reach million of people to demonstrate that the Israelis are good people and not the way they are being fortrait. Also, they gave home to the many Vietnamese boat people when no one did.
How wonderful that Shameul Kau was able to see the connection between the Exodus celebrated at Passover with the journey for freedom pursued by the Dar Fur Stars. To be able to combine their experiences into a peaceful, musical message that spreads their story is fabulous.  The article highlights that these immigrants were arrested, but we arrest illegal immigrants in our own country. It's great that a statement of unity and healing can come out of this situation. May it grow world wide!
...and this is only the TIP of the iceberg.  There are countless other deeds of compassion made by Israelis towards Muslims, most notably the numerous cases of Israelis performing life saving operations on Palestinians from Gaza; A place who's leadership believes it is their God given right to kill every Jew in Israel (and the world, given time).  Yet, many in the media, who should be covering this, practice their not so hidden anti-Jewish agenda, by complicity, if not implicitly, play up the "massacres" committed by Israel, when, and get this, Israel simply retaliates for attacks by terrorists, who shoot and hide amongst their own civilian populations!  I've always marveled at the incredulousness of the claims of the "we must kill the Jews'" groups.  They constantly decry the "injustice” of the Israelis, right after they have just carried out some "good-deed killings" in the name of Allah.  And on top of it all, are we blind and deaf to the weekly mass killings by their own Muslim brother, of 40 to 50 Shias or Sunnis, by their very same brothers in arms in Iraq?  The very same groups that share the same philosophy of “their God given right to kill infidels and Jews”!!   Do they actually think people don’t see through this?  Or do they perhaps prescribe to Hitler’s notion that “The more you claim your lie to be true, the more it will be believed”?
As a member of the Save Darfur I teared up reading this powerful example of peace. It saddens me that man can be so cruel to others, based simply on religion, skin color, or other superfical matters. This story renews my hopes that some day all PEOPLE will be treated with dignity, respect, and PEACE, without the fear of being killed, tortured, raped, or displaced from their home for being different from the majority. Thank you for presenting a light in the darkness.
It is a very sad world we live in. We take what we have her in the USA for granted. Imagine not being able to play music in your own launguage, Isreal is pretty free. A dangerous place but religiously free. If you are a Christian you know that even though we are suppose to love everyone as Christ loves all of us
that Jewish people the sons of Abraham will never be able to get along with Muslams. We know that the land was given to the Isrealites for all time and we know how all of this turns out. Lord bless them in their precious time of peace.
finally, something that is positive about Israel. and he is Muslim, right? AND his HAPPY to be in Israel. Israel is keeping him from being murdered by the Sudanese right?  When people aren't aggressive toward Israel, Israel will not be aggressive to them. He did however, go to jail for a while. We must remember, it is illeagal to immigrate without papers. I commend Israel for taking on the Darfurians.
Israel should stop trying to distract the world from the atrocities that they commit against the Palestinians every day by appearing to care about the Darfurians. Any sensible individual should be able to see right through this ploy.
Reading this article does show me there is hope for humanity. These types of stories rarely reach mass media, who seem to be more interested in reinforcing all of the bad in the world. If this group ever has the chance to come to America, I'd love to attend.
Thanks for showing the world that our individual uniqueness? is able to blend in gracious harmony.
Let's not wait until we've lost everything, to lose our fear of others within the world.
Can anyone get a bootleg of some songs?! Is there a website you can go to for listening?
This is just amazing that two groups of people who both worship the God of Abraham are working together in a loving project of friendship. This just shows that the difference between a world of war and a world of peace is not so great.

                       Peace: Joe Helm 111
WOW...this is so AWEsome!  I love it!

Israel, I am so happy that you are showing the world how  to love and care for those less fortunate. This is SSSSSSOOOOOOOO special.
I think that you make the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob, a God of mercy and compassion, very very  Pleased;   sssoooooPleased Keep going!!!
Great to see people working together for a change. It can be a better world if we get along.
This is indescribably amazing! God bless all those in the vanguard for a one world
Ray Harris claims Israelis are committing "atrocities" every day against Palestinians?  The only thing they do every day is enforce control over Israel's borders.  What they should do is bomb Gaza until they stop shooting rockets at civilians. Ray, do you know that Arabs are citizens in Israel and in the Parliament?  Do you know Jews are not allowed to set foot in most Arab countries?  Learn some facts before you spout off your baseless hatred. The "ploy we can see through" is your attempt to cover up your hatred of Israel by appearing to make the victim the victimizer.  How many Arab peace groups are there by the way?  How many Arab groups come out against Arab terrorism.  84% of all Palestinians support the killing of high school boys a few weeks ago.  Israel has peace groups, self-criticism and compassionate people.  Open your eyes.
Well done,israel.
It is unfourtante that muslims seeking freedom risk there lives to go to the only jewish state in the middle east.
