China's 'Smiling Angel in Wheelchair'

BEIJING – In recent days it has been difficult to take away any positives from China's now unfortunately titled torch relay, the "Journey of Harmony to Beijing," at least based on international news coverage of the events.

But the media here have found a positive face in the young, handicapped woman who was confronted by protesters in Paris this week.

French policemen hold down a pro-Tibet protestor as the Olympic flame is protected by Jin Jing in Paris on April 7.

Jin Jing, 28, a former Paralympics fencer from Shanghai who uses a wheelchair, won national acclaim for what the media described as her heroics in protecting the Olympic torch from a group of pro-Tibetan protesters (all protesters have been ubiquitously labeled "Tibetan separatists" and "pro-Tibet independence activists" in state media reports).

Jin's feisty defense of the torch – she suffered scratches and a bruised leg during the confrontation – has been heavily covered by China's media, which has the unenviable task of mitigating the scope of the protests.

Protecting the torch
In a radio press conference which was quickly picked up by the official Beijing Olympics website, Jin described the Paris incident:

"When the second torchbearer was accepting the flame from the first, I was waiting at my position as the third torchbearer. At the time the security around me was relatively light, there were only a few police officers and three, maybe two, escort runners around me. Several Tibetan separatists and members of ‘Reporters without Borders’ came over to protest.

"They began lunging toward me, trying to grab the torch from my hands. I tried to hide the torch with my body and managed to keep it from them. I was focused on the three or four separatists attacking me. I'm not sure how many were behind me. I felt people trying to take the torch from me. That's when some of the escort runners, as well as the tourist guide assigned to me in Paris, came over to help me, drawing the attackers away.

"People ask me how I dealt with the danger. I don't think I thought too much about it. I trusted the escorts around me. They were the ones, along with my guide, that faced the danger."

Hero’s welcome
Upon her return to Beijing, Jin was treated to a hero's welcome as crowds gathered to hail the woman news reports glowingly described as the "Smiling Angel in Wheelchair" and the "Most Beautiful Torchbearer."

Jin, who had part of her right leg amputated at the age of 9 after a malignant tumor was found on her ankle and later underwent a year of chemotherapy, is a charismatic woman with a glowing smile.

And hungry for a positive Chinese figure to serve up to its audience, the Chinese media clearly saw the star potential in Jin: at the time of this posting, fully half of the "News" section on the official Torch Relay website were accounts of her actions that day, including one entitled: "Jin Jing's mother: I'm proud of my daughter."

Online forums have also been abuzz with praise for her and her dedication to the Olympic spirit. One netizen on an Olympic thread wrote, "I burst into tears when I saw how you [Jin] protected the flame, I think you protected the torch and also saved the spirit of the Olympics."

Attacks heighten nationalism
However, not all messages have been positive. On another popular website, Mopu, the picture of Jin being assaulted by the ethnic Tibetan protester sparked outrage among posters. "Kill with no leniency!" and "kill the foreign !@#$!" – using a slur for Tibetans used amongst ethnic Han Chinese were popular sentiments shared by many of the contributors.

The majority of such sentiments appeared to be from angry mainland Chinese blowing off steam over the perceived international humiliation that protesters have brought to the torch and by extension, China.

However, if these protests grow, the Chinese will likely settle into a siege mentality, an "us versus the world" attitude.  It may become increasingly easier for Chinese to look at what many would consider legitimate calls for change and dismiss them as nothing more than Western rhetoric and propaganda.

Dear Friends:
I believe the terrorists are real and the occurances and they are merciless in their respect toward the achievements of atheletes who spend years in preparing. Whether it be their nation or others is insignificant.  I commend the Chinese for such swift action and determination to lead the enemy away from this event.  May peace follow this torch of mankinds acheivement and may it represent love amoung all who care.    Across the world I call for prayers of peace for almighty FATHER is stronger than all mankind.  No one person is equal nor to be epitmised.  There are many religions world wide may each bow their heads in prayer and carry a torch, the light of peace throughout the world. Not only China and all coming into and amoung this nation but in this time also Russhia as the timing and approaching Summer and Winter Olympics bring forth the best of each and every nation to world Olympic competion and acheivement.   Each has already achieved the honor to compete.  May we pray and walk and live in peace!

A note: the challenges of weather may also be present!
"The majority of such sentiments appeared to be from angry mainland Chinese blowing off steam over the perceived international humiliation that protesters have brought to the torch and by extension, China."  Once again, you are either misinformed or intentionally trying to mislead readers.  The anger displayed by ordinary Chinese citizens has little to do with the demonstration, they understand demonstrations are just part of life in the West.  What they are angry about is the violent tactics used by the so call "peace loving" protestors, after all, it take a really brave man to attack a girl on wheelchair.  The main steam media keeps reporting the crackdown in Tibet, but always failed to mention the Tibetans' riot preceded it.  As the Tibetans (monks included) attacking the ethnic Chinese & Muslims, should it be any governments’ responsibility to restore the order?  IMHO, it is the West that is in a siege mentality of “us against the Chinese”.

One more thing, while millions of mainland Chinese could read & write in English, most Westerners couldn’t even recognize “one, two, three…” in Chinese characters.  It is true that internet in China is censored, however, a simple proxy server will be able to bypass the firewall in most instances.  OTOH, it is a far more difficult task for Westerners to bypass the language barrier.
What's the use to talk the stright factors into those twisted, shallow, and ignorant Western mind?

It is time for Chinese people to move on with their heads up and build a morden and strong society and economy that only a darkest coner left for those Chinese-haters to cry and to curse.
If this girl is a hero, that what are the Tibetans that were murdered by the Chinese police and soldiers.  Screw China!
I think it's ironic that the negative blog posts in Chinese called the Tibetans "foreign !@#$". Isn't Tibet fighting to define themselves as a national identity, and China fighting to have them assimilated into Chinese culture? The Tibetans specifically want to be considered "foreign" to the Chinese.
Courageous girl indeed.  By now we've all see the violent nature of pro-tibet protestors.  Assaulting a wheel-chaired girl for their own political agenda, how shameful!
It's unfortunate that western media blatantly distort truth and news regarding China-tibet incident. While Chinese government had a long history of censoring published news, not everything about China and her government is negative. Olympic should be a purely athletic event, and yet some extremist saw the opportunity and try to blacken the Chinese image in the world. Frankly, their violent actions would already be labeled terrorist in western media and suffer much greater military crack down. On the contrary, western media rhetorically call them protestors; intentionally ignoring their violence had result in hundreds of deaths of innocent, including five young women burned to death. Some of the news published by MSNBC, and CNN etc, are completely unfounded (claiming their source is ‘unrevealed’) and the images used are often changed, distorted, or came from a completely different incident! If this is the so called free media (free to distort and manipulate truth without censorship). If this is the so called journalism, shame on that!

I do agree with one thing from this piece of article, if western media continues to blacken Chinese image, it will only agitate Chinese to unite against “All westerners”. Such consequence is damaging to both sides.

For truth about Tibet history: http://tw.youtube.com/watch?v=Xsoc4-QnplY
For examples of the manipulating nature of western media: http://tw.youtube.com/watch?v=uSQnK5FcKas&feature=related
Nowadays everybody wans independency, starting with your barely 1 year old toddler. The fact is that most of the people who wants independency are not ready or able to exercise that right. Just look at the African nations. They got ride of Colonism for years. Their People's living standard hardly shows any significant
improvement. Instead, there is wars among different factions/ tribes /religions....etc.
As a member of China, Tibet has very little to offer.
The Chinese Government has spent tremengous of resources into the region. For practicality, China is actually better off to let go of Tibet and let the westerners come to its rescue. Then they would appreciate what a good deal they've got under China.
Unfortunately, China has too much pride to let that happen. As for the westerners who made the most noise about Tibet, I dare say they don't know anything about Tibet at all. Tibet's relatiohship with China started almost 1000 years ago, long before the birth of Communism. The past Chinese Governments just kept a symbolisc presence there because it is so remote. But through all these times its officials kind of left the Tibetan do their things.
The rapid modernization brings with it a tighter control. Contrary to the misconception,China actually would love to grant autonomy to the tibetan. However they want more ie. they want autonomy for a Greater
Tibet; meaning autonomy for all the areas where Tibetans live. That is a lot to ask for and cannot be
supported by any logic. If that logic stands why don't the Tibetans try the same approach in United States?
And I'd like to hear what Nancy Pelosi has to say about that?

Some Tibetans are very angry over Chinese rule and want Tibet to be indepedent. But any violent acts including burning non-Tibetans and in this case use          against a handicapped woman Jin are not peaceful protest.  I think they should listen to Dr. Martin Luthern King, Jr, and we all human Beings are world citizens.  We all decieve a non-violent environment to live.  Any violent acts used by Tibetans are no different from extreme Muslim       ists.

I certainly agree with you, Ed, that it is definitely not good for future world peace if Chinese people settle into a siege mentality. But how did it happen? Why didn’t your article probe it further?

Before you or any Westerner branding me as being brainwashed by Communists, here is my disclaimer: I’m an Chinese American who grew up and educated in Taiwan and have followed articles on NYT, Washington Post and news broadcast on CBS, NBC, ABC, and PBS, etc. for more than thirty years.

Therefore my followed up question for you is: What would be the outcome of world peace if Western folks are also fed with biased information, e.g. distorted pictures by CNN and miss-placed picture by Germany News organizations on reporting the recent Tibet event? For whatever their motives or excuses, those few has badly damaged the credibility built by Western media in the past. It’s going to take very long for Western media to regain its credibility among educated Chinese!

Even in this article, the lack of justice of condemning the brutal attack on a defenseless, one-leg handicapped female torchbearer will make Chinese people cringed. Are you still wondering why Chinese feels being under siege?

I fully understood that today’s profit-driven News organizations are having different priorities than did NYT or Washington Post in the early 1970. And you have to SALE your news to your Western audience by attracting them with exciting headlines. But you must have noticed that most of Chinese Netizens do read article like yours so an even-handed report can server both Chinese people and Westerners well in the long-run.

I don’t know how well you understand about Chinese people. Here I meant people not Beijing government. But I’d like to offer you as  a Western reporter in China: If you have a Chinese enemy, you can get him or her into trouble easily just by labeling him or her as Human Right Activist in your article because HRA has already become an overly used code word for intervention. Before the recent Republics, Chinese people has already overthrown twenty four dynasties when people were fed up, in case you’re not familiar with Chinese history. Therefore Chinese people can take care themselves without Westerners coming on white horses. Thanks but no thanks.

The massive demonstration at Tiananmen Square in 1989 actually lasted peacefully for more than one month until CNN wrongfully reported that demonstrators were demanding for human rights while they were actually complained against corruption of the high officials.

I sincerely hope that you can do a much better reporting than those CNN reporters did. Thanks
China should just tell the IOC that she will no longer be hosting this stupid game. Who cares? The Western media is just as biased as the Chinese state media. It would be naive to think there is not someone behind all this crap.
This is the first time I have heard of China celebrating a handicapped girl as a hero.  I do not think the world should neglect to see this either.  Maybe positive change is happening in China?
Watch this:

See how you media make up the stories? See how some Tibetans started the violence? Watch more news other than CNN.
This report does not do justice to the material available for publish.  You have missed a good chance to declare your neutrality by not posting the best available photo showing how this girl resist the attacker and protect the torch with all she can sitting in the wheel chair.  A very touching scene that warrant a pulitzer prize.  See for yourself in other reports to get that feel.
ABSOLUTE HORSE MANURE.
What a pity.  This is the very first article that's not 100% demonizing China related to Olympics in the past four weeks from the media.  You media folks have very successfully driven a much deeper divide between the people in China and the people in the West.  Congratulations on a good job well done.

No matter how good your cause is, attacking a handicapped person that has nothing to do with what you are fighting for is a very low thing to do.  I feel angered at the protesters, having a handicapped brother.  I feel Pro-Tibet but this is unacceptable.
It can be argued for a long time about the legitimacy of China's presence in the territories that surround the Han populated areas and I won't attempt that here but in several Asian countries in recent years, it is the ethnic Chinese who are attacked and their shops burned by protesters in all these places and I don't blame the Chinese for feeling strong nationalistic solidarity after things like that. Certainly my Chinese family in Taiwan has seen the dark side of this during the past eight years of DPP rule there. China has a long ways to go in improving its civil rights situation, especially in the rural areas but it is improving and has come very far from the total Hell of the Cultural revolution. Unless we change our course here in the U.S. it seems likely that we will soon meet China halfway coming from the opposite direction and not stop. On this particular encounter it casts no small moral shame on these protesters and their cause to assault, maul, and unsuccessfully rob an amputee woman in a wheelchair of her rightfully earned honour. They would have lost less face in chasing down an Olympian runner in top form. As it is I so admire Jin Jing for her mental resolve and bravery in sticking to and completing her mission. She acquitted herself and honoured her country and people to the fullest. She helped me understand that the Olympics are about the athletes, those who appreciate the athletes, and nothing else.
The chinese people have gotten what they deserve. They had no right to take over Tibet, a sovereign country. I sincerely hope the protests grow even stronger.
i think the world should give china a justness.
we are all human, we know what is wrong and what is right. we have ourselves opinions. yes, you can have yours.
but you should understand the whole then you can have a conclusion. don't so extreme.
i am a positive man, i believe our country will overcome it.
so please be justice.

These are stories we need to see in our world more.  It is my personal philosophy that the Chinese Government would do well to learn more about the art of 'neutralizing' the Free Tibet movement, especially in the USA, by reminding them of two important issues:
1. Since arriving on the shores of the North American Continent the Native American Culture has suffered a Cultural Genocide which continues even today.
2. They should be reminded of the Chinese Proverb which says, "Before you begin to change the world, walk three times through your own house.
Perhaps this gives us a glimpse into the true nature of these so-called "peaceful" Tibetan protesters.
Go China~~We are supporting you no matter what!!!
Western media have already lost most of their credits in this issue. They don't care what the Chinese people want. Please don't tell me the protesters and the western media only aiming at the Chinese government. Nobody is that stupid. Self righteousness already led US to the Iraq invasion and more. Don't just blame it on Bush. The American medias, the politicians, and, to a large degree the general publics at large bear the majority of that responsibility for starting this war. Now, nobody want give a second thought about the automatic assignment of blames?
It is sad that people will attack a handicap in a wheelchair.
I was married for over 31 years to a chinese person and I learned so much of the chinese culture.  I also have 4 children by this person and I do not regret it even though we experienced much hate from different people.  I do not condone the ethics of mainland china or their politics but I do admire the general chines people population.  My husband is now deceased but I always remember him with love and respect.
censorship on the blog due to it being a story about China and the olympics.....

I guess free speech is no longer free
Tibet knows only religion and plant their food to eat and don't agree to be invaded at all.  Free also Spratley island lies close to Philippine island and follow the international law about 200 miles bounderies to every countries.
A lot of the protestor do not even know what they are fighting for.
If the protestor in the west are fighting for human rights, then should they attack another human or should they engage in talks.  (the tibetian protestors are going around killing people, what do you want china to do but use power to clamp them down)
If the protestor in the west are fighting for Tibet, do they know that when Dalai rule tibet, it is a serfdom.  Majority of people are poor and uneducated.  China improve the life of the poor and end the dictator system of the monks.  And this uprising is by a small group of people, so stop protraying this like the whole of tibet support it.

The current situation is that the western media refuse to educate their audience about china.  Thus, the uproar by chinese as this is preceive as unfair treatment.
I would like to see China free up their press but I would not support these protestor that are actually against growth of China.  These protestors are just using Human rights and Tibet as a cover to hide their intention.
Note: I am not from China and I read western news media mainly.
Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto is portrayed in the 1970 film Tora! Tora! Tora!, as saying after his attack on Pearl Harbor, "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."

A nation once was in an one-world one-dream warm dream. And this attack is such a symbol as a brutal call to wake up her from the romantic yet weak fantasy. Now she learned how to live in the cold cruel jungle.

You will pay back it with all the cost.
Imagne how the mother of other children who have been beaten for defending their religion anc culture feel?  Tibet is not China and these people need to let be.  I am a Native American and I wouls hate to see another indegious people be genocide just because the majority doesn't agree or understand their religion and culture!
This is so sad. These violent protesters show their true colors reflecting the dark deep side of the Dalai Lama cult. To beat up on a handicapped girl is destestible. Incredibly, people and news media seem to ignore these insults to humanity by the Tibetans and instead call China the culprit. I have seen no evidence that China has done anything but shown tremendous patience in this whole matter. I hope they continue and the world should let that country deal with its internal problems just as we do like outsiders telling us what to do.
As a young Chinese who has been in US for almost 2 years. I found whatever Chinese government did, China always be looked as an evil. Did American know there are 5 young girls were burn to die by the “pro-Tibetan” protesters in Lhasa recently? Did American know 60% of Tibetan is slaves in 60 years ago, and the most of the monks are slaveholder? American tries to label them as democrat by anti-china. How many American have been to China or Tibet? But how many people were killed in Iraq everyday?
I would not attack any handicap person. It's a shame.
Someday the Chinese government's "us versus the world" attitude will end.  It may be after a cataclysm, but it will happen.  If the Chinese are to "open up" to the world, then they should be willing to listen to any disagreements that the West has.  So far, the Chinese have not been willing to listen to pro-Tibet views, dismissing them as propaganda rather than looking at pro-Tibet arguments objectively and without assumptions.  So I think that the Chinese are not opening up.  And the Olympics, therefore, is not an effective way for China to "open up to the world".
And whenever the Chinese say something that disagrees with Pro-Tibet views, they give no evidence.  So the Maoist government knows that there is no way to support its anti-Tibet view; they're just being racist and biased and are "finding a way" to support their view.  They won't succeed.

What utter propaganda.  While I think that its unfortunate that a very nice girl like that end up in the middle of this, the sheer ridiculous tone of the Chinese communist propaganda is just cringeworthy.  Sheesh, can they sound any more corny.  I know I have problems with the gov't here in the US, but to their credit they never make their statements sound so insultingly flippant "Jin demonstrated great valor when a "pro-Tibet independence" activist...".  Make me puke.  Apparently its ok to slaughter monks.  Because they are OH SO THREATENING.  Boycott Beijing Olympics 2008.  China is clearly not ready to meet civilization.
Is it a true story?  It's not on CNN. So, I guess it's never happened.
China is always making its effor to develop Tibet, and everyone can wittness its great progess during these past 50 years. I am really angry about the whole protesting event and the false report from the western media. Tibet is always a part of China.
People are using olympic to attack China Government and political issues.  What a loser to all countries who stated they want to boycott the olympics in Beijing.

Im a foreigner who lives in China for my last 4 years and i can say the policy here really is strict but all of this leads to a good result. Peace and stability of the country. Unlike other countries, you are free to express whatever you like to do. too much freedom leds to chaos.

I just hope those people behind this will think twice before they make further action. They are protesting and saying human rights in China but on the other side, they are buyig millions of products in China wherein they will use it in their country.

Chinese People are extremely hospitable and very hard working. It is sad to see that their happiness to host the Olympic Games is spoiled by these Olympic Terrorists that justify their outrageus and offensive behavior by some political BS.  People wake up, these are just hooligans that hate China.  Their position is unlawful in every respect.  Stop Hate! Go Olympics!
My belief is that its a shame some Chinese people think of this as a humiliation; thats not the point it is that the Chinese governement continues to suppress, torture, kill, and silence the peaceful people of Tibet and some of us are saying enough of this!
First thank for the world's attetion to China's event.BUT We hope that the world can know   the whole turth comprehensively. Our Chinese welcome the friendly and justicial comments about the execrable Tibet-incident.
We are all proud of Jinjing.
Chinese People are extremely hospitable and very hard working.  They prepare day and night for this once in the life time event. It is sad to see that their happiness to host the Olympic Games is spoiled by these Olympic hooligans who justify their outrageous and offensive behavior by some political reasoning.  Taking Olympic Flame from the hands of the disable Athlete is beyond humane.  Stop Hate! Support Olympics!
She is a hero!
This whole story of "fight for Tibetan independence" is nothing more than just another example of today's world's hypocrisy. People are fighting on the streets, yelling for freedom, democracy and so on, so on, and on the other hand they supported taking one third of territory (!!!) from European country, Serbia, to be ruled by criminals and terrorists. Serbs in Kosovo (those who left), thanks to you, are living in much worst living conditions than Tibetans, and several HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS(!!!) had to leave Kosovo, despite the fact that Kosovo is home for their families for many centuries and that Albanians after WWII (at the time of China attacked Tibet) were transfered from Albania to live on Kosovo. Now, live with that!

I wish you have the same destiny and feel
the consequences of your deeds.
