Seeing black in China

BEIJING, China Quite possibly one of the busiest people in China right now are the television censors.

As international news broadcasters like the BBC World Service Television and CNN International play footage around the clock of the Tibet unrest, viewers with access to satellite TV in Beijing and across cities in China find themselves scratching their heads as reports suddenly go to black whenever the word "Tibet" comes up.

VIDEO: Monks disrupt media tour of Tibet

Sometimes the screen goes black before a report about Tibet airs.

Sometimes the screen goes black right after the report begins airing.

Sometimes the screen goes black midway through the report – as though the censor had stepped away to make a cup of tea and returned a little too late.

Sometimes the screen doesn't go to black at all, and entire broadcasts go to air without interruption.

These include a live transmission by a Hong Kong cable television crew from a Muslim quarter of Lhasa, showing Chinese security forces searching homes the day after the first riots broke out on March 14.

Or, today, when some international broadcasters such as the BBC carried dramatic pictures of Tibetan monks bursting onto a small group of foreign press on a government-orchestrated tour of Jokhang Temple and openly condemning the Chinese authorities.

I wondered whether this footage was allowed to be broadcast in full because the news presenter read over the video speaking in general terms about the situation in Tibet, and so viewers had no idea what the monks were actually saying unless they went online to read about the story.

But if a viewer did get on the Internet in China, Googled "Tibet monks," and tried to click on the Associated Press's article a message saying, "problem loading page," popped up.

The same thing happens when you try to click on the reports about the monks' outburst on the websites for BBC News, the New York Times, the Financial Times, and even China's very own state-run news agency, Xinhua

NBC video reports and blogs about Tibet on this site also have been blocked, including the World Blog, which is normally accessible in China.

VIDEO: Witness to Tibet's unrest

So in order to obtain any current news about Tibet, we – like many foreign media – have to rely on our own company Intranet.

For those without access to a company Intranet in China, they have to use a proxy server.

Or else they ask journalists. For days now, the most common refrain from my non-media friends has been, "What's happening in Tibet?" "What have you heard?"

But for once during this year of newly relaxed press regulations in China, journalists are also stumped. Tibet and the surrounding Tibetan communities in China continue to remain off-limits to the media, except for in highly controlled circumstances.

There should be an immediate boycutt by America's athletes to protest the illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq by the United States under George Bush.  More than 100,000 innocent civilians have been killed by the American military forces, due to indescriminant bombing and shooting of civilians. America's actions in Iraq are disgusting.  The Olympics are too important of a political platform to not protest America's actions in Iraq.  Join us in our protests during the Games.  Make your voice heard: USA OUT OF IRAQ NOW!
All I can say is:
Leave Tibet be and let them sort it out among themselves. Do a Prime Minister Chamberlain. Maybe the Chinese will remember that when they start targeting their next victims and leave us 'til last.

All that is needed for evil to triumph is that good people do nothing.

If that doesn't sit well with you, then STOP buying items marked "made in China", stop buying from companies which do business there and BOYCOTT the Olympics. Don't go, don't watch, don't purchase ANY Olympic items.

And write, call, text, e-mail your representatives in government at every level. Tell them to remember that this is an election year and if they stay soft on the Commies they can be replaced. Judging by their actions, even a hamster would do a better job.

See above? This is called cencor and it is on msnbc, so you think you have free and fair media in US, proved you are wrong.
boycott Olympic, I think you should drop that stupid, because the chinese authority may simply drop the olympic and kill all tibetan instead, haha.
Is the Chinese Government a repressive regime, or what?
Lier CNN,Disgusted CNN!
I'am a normal China younger !
If you want to know the true facts! Please come to China to see in your eyes!
Don't believe the reporter on the CNN!Believe your eyes!

Maybe if everybody boycott Walmart we could crumble China's economy.??
Try to think why Dalai Lama speaks English rather than Chinese or Tibetan. Some American seems teaching Dalai Lama pretty well English. That is the real one 'has been to gradually water down the Tibetan culture'.

I like Tibetan and their religion. I read the book 'The Life and Death of Tibet'. As I know, Chinese majority has never thought Tibetan is any other kind of people. We are living in the same country and develop the country together. We have contment and complain like any other country's people. This is the fact. From my view, the even is more likely to be Dalai Lama use other's faith to achieve personal political purpose.

Is western social system perfect? Do Asian and Afrian people really acquire equal opportunity in work and society? If not, Please take care of yourself first.

I have lived a lot of place in the world. I have been to Tibet and I believe the government of china though nothing is perfect. I can see the whole thing without any 'Censorship'. And the words above are my point.
No doubt. 2008's Olympic in China will be cloudy.
There always will be pros and cons on Tibet issues.  But who is the real victim here?  The Tibetan. No one should judge this issue based on the medias, but the actual Tibetan.  They are the real voice.  The rest are just ???.  Think....Think...Think....Before you judge.
I am almost sure that those are blindly criticizing China or Chinese Government have never been on this Land. Welcome to China!
Article in rebuttal to Michael Parenti article A Lie Repeated - The Far Left’s Flawed History of Tibet
http://www.studentsforafreetibet.org/article.php?id=425
Has everyone realized that censorship on Tibet in China has the effect on reducing racial hatred among Han Chinese ("Whites" in China) in China? Think about it, if Blacks attack White Americans, I bet you that many whites will line up in front of  gunshops as in the case of katrina. Police will certainly shoot those who attempt to stab them.
I'll agree with the contributor, that asked why the Olympics are even being staged in China.

China needs to be told to go pound sand.

Captains of industry in these United States need to wise the F*** up, and get completely out of China.

China, is an adequate market unto itself.  We need to pull all our industry and technology out, and let them build their own infrastructure, factories and the like... Any state as repressive as communist China, [[ are you listening, radical islam ?? ] needs to be cut off cold from the rest of the free world, until such time as they discover that their form of government died with the Soviet Union.
I don't believe there is a perfect Govenment in this world. And every govenment will use all tools to control the country. I support China govenment.
There are terrible and unhuman things going on in China.  The catholic church cannot practice openly there without persecution.  I believe the games for August should be boycotted.  We need to stand up to the Chinese Goverment.  Our country isn't perfect but it is still the best place to live in the world.
The US President will find himself in the same situation Reagan did in the late 80's when the Soviet Block fell. It will be a historic moment that the US must capture ahead of the Olympics.  These Olympics will be the bloodiest in history. Communism in China will crumble.
I already typed my message.  What happened to it?
Most msg here against Chinese interest are posted by people ignorant of world affair.  Being fed with cheoraographed protests and paid articles in the media; to them chinese are guilty before committing crime, just like the Indian and Negro before them.  Luckily they have emerged from these bully and they can take care of themselves now.  The real problem in tibet is not what is being told in the media, if you believe in it you will slowly go into a  conflict and regret like the case of Iraq.
Apparently China is ready to open its door to everyone through hosting the Olympic. There is no deny that one way to move the humnanity forward is to understand the truth, interact with strangers and judge for oneself instead of being fed digested news.  Yet some are trying to persuade other not to use this time tested way of seeking peace for the goood of humanity.  So think again what they have in mind? By the way, chinese have thousand years of continuous history and culture and they can survive very well by not knowing a words in English, yet they are eager to learn it to understand the outside world, they have good attitude.  Do you have it too?
About ...when will we  americans stop buying their products. When will walmart stop sending 18 billions a year to China for products we buy?
The real strenght is in the money and China now has enough of our dollar to influence the value of it...
People need to look at the economics of the world to see where power is. The chinese people are working 12 hours a day doing meaningless work to bring americans their toys...I have stopped buying made in China and just do without if necessary...boycott Walmart to start with.
It seems not everyone agree about Tibet. Go back to history and look at why the Dalai lama had to leave.
Why do China insist that TIBET is part of their land?
Are they taking resources from there? Are they repressing the people?
What are the facts about TIBET...and the history.
This question is for the chinese readers to answer.

For nearly 50 years - up until 1991 - the three European Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania were in the same situation as Tibet is today: occupied by an aggressive, genocidal communist regime. These three nations were illegally & brutally occupied and annexed to the colonial Soviet Empire. My parents fled their Latvian homeland as refugees and found sanctuary in Sweden. Madman Stalin threatened the King of Sweden that if he didn’t return these Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians the USSR would occupy Sweden. Unfortunately the Swedish King was afraid of Stalin and began sending the refugees back. Naturally those who were returned were shipped off to Siberia where most of them died.
Ten percent of the Latvian population: teachers, businessmen, artists, students anyone who was intelligent – were deported by cattle cars to the concentration camp gulags throughout the former USSR. Dissidents were physically and mentally tortured, maimed and murdered. Russian was the language of occupation. Flying the national flag or singing the Latvian anthem – God Bless Latvia - was forbidden.
Tibet has the same story as Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Instead of deportation the Chinese just turned Tibet into a big police-controlled prison. While the Baltic nations have regained their independence, sadly Tibet is still under the oppressive Chinese communists. Tibet was occupied by another of the 20th century’s evil demonic beings – namely Chairman Mao. Naturally, Stalin supported Mao’s rise to power; Stalin also encouraged Mao to brutally occupy Tibet; by the way Stalin and his ally Hitler also began World War II. In this new millennium isn’t it time to stop the hate, the ignorance and the greed?
Why do e trade with and travel to China, a Communist country, and are not allowed to trade with and travel to Cuba?  China has exported many foods and items around the world that are poisonous and deadly.  I have read some Chinese posters that brag that if we do not buy "Made in China" we would not be buying anything!  I, for one, will not watch the Olympics on TV and check every item I buy to see where it is made.  No, we are not perfect, but better than China.
First, I see so many people writing about Censorship in America. But they do not seem to ever clarify what TYPE of censorship the FCC enforces in America, they only seem to throw the word out to bolster there arguments. The ONLY censorship the FCC enforces, on the media in America, is censorship against the use of bad language, like F@#$k and S@#t, etc... The FCC also never blacks out or shuts out any media in America, they take the companies to court and fine them for money! Perfect example of Americas "Free Media" is talk shows like Howard Stern. Even though they are now on Satellite Radio, which censors bad language very little, they used to have to censor themselves, the proverbial delay and "Beep" when someone said a bad word like F@#k you. So everyone that actually is delirious enough to think the FCC censors anything but bad language, wake up and stop trying to compare American media with censorship tactics of a communist country like China. America is a country where anyone can go on the radio, TV or now satellite and curse out our own president! You will here a lot of "Beep" Bush he sucks "beep" balls and his policies "beep" suck, but it would air and the FCC was not the one censoring the broadcast, it was the actual station because they do not want to get fines by the FCC for all the bad language. Some moron brought up 9-11 and censorship. I live in NY and lived through 9-11 and perfect example of Americas free media is when they showed Arabs, from Brooklyn, jumping up and down with joy, celebrating the attack on America. It aired on the News for everyone to see and you know what? The Arabs in Brooklyn are still there, they were not hurt nor were they asked to stop and no one bothered them. Why? because it was there constitutional "freedom of speech" right to say what ever they wanted to say. Now, can you actually compare that kind of freedom with a country like China? I think not! Everyone on this blog can say whatever they want and the FCC will not black out this website. Its funny when foreigners talk about American freedoms but never lived here. Wake up and smell the "beep"ing coffee.

I WISH ALL CITZENS OF THE U.S.A. WOULD GET TOGETHER ON A WEBLOG AND REVEIW THE ARTICLE, COMPLETELY, ON BUSH'S WAR ON PBS! GIVE YOUR IDEAS ON WHAT IS HAPPENING TO US, AND WHATCENSORSHIP HAS DONE TO THE U.S.A. OUR ECONOMY, CREDIBILITY,ACCOUNTABILITY, OF THIS ADMINISTRATION IN WASHINGTON D.C. I THINK A FULL INVESTITATION AND PROSECUTION IS APPROPRIATE. TO SAY NOTHING ABOUT LOSS OF LIFE AND PERMINTLY DISABLED! FAMILIES SUFFERING LOSSES FOR EVER. V.P. CHENEY'S RESPONSE,"THEY VOLUNTEERED"!!!!                                           I CAN NOT BELIEVE WHAT HAS GONE ON IN THE LAST 7.5 YEARS!!!!! THANK YOU, VIC
EVERY government of the world, by their nature, is TOP.  That's tyranny, opression, and persecution.  EVERY single one, and one of the worst is the USA, which cleverly hides it all.
Nice to see comments from everyone. That's the way I judge level of censorship! I've been trying to see some honest debate on ABC and Yahoo about Tibet and it just hasn't been there. I felt that the Chinese Media was balanced in presenting Western and Eastern points of view on CCTV9, which is online for you English speakers. Compared to the drivel I had to listen to for years about the noble Iraqi War from the US, China media is refreshing.
Jack Smith, Thank you.  An honest view. To so many others-  Ignorance breeds contempt.  Whose propoganda baited your opinion?
I'm from China and I know something happened in that region but considering the goverment's tradition on the media and the long-time rancor the west hold against us, I'm unsure of the truth. Anyway, the gov. has already started a campaign againstforeign medias. There's actually an anti-cnn website built.
By the way,I'm not using a proxy to visit this worldblog which msnbc says to have been blocked.
First, I am coming from Shanghai, China. I read msnbc and this blog without any problem. (I do find the site was blocked or slowed 2 weeks ago right after the 3.14 event.)

Second, I sympathize the Chinese government couldn't invent words like 'embeded' reporter and copy the story book how US started the Iraq War under a biggest lie in mordern world; I woder the the choice of words by western media, what's the difference between Patriotism and Nationalism? US does staged show and propaganda too and it just does it in a more subtle and professional way. Remember, China is still a developing country.

Third, I know China is not a perfect country and do admit the Tibet is a complex issue than the government portrayed. But the unbalanced western reports easily make normal Chinese feel this is the PR war against China instead of against the commist government.

Fourth, confrontation (boycott) will only make Tibet case worse. This will certainly make Chinese resolve stronger and China can/should certainly revenge towards those who wants make China lose face.
WOW, I just finished reading
http://www.michaelparenti.org/Tibet.html
Makes you rethink your opinion of China and Tibet. Thanks for the link.
I agree with jack Smith. As a Far Eastern Asian history and literature major...
China actually held Tibet as an AUTONOMOUS (independently-government run) region since the 13th century. In the 20th century, a failed Qing Dynasty and failing nationalist party (as well as the West's invasion of China...and attempted invasion of Tibet) led to China's ignoring Tibet. Tibet was extremely poor; China has poured endless amounts of funding into Tibet to raise it up. Still, propoganda from Western media, which has taken a liking to the Dalai Lama (partly because he was educated in the West).

I am not saying Tibetans are crying for no reason. That they want complete independence is a LEGITAMATE cry. But they do have religious freedom there. However, what the Tibetans want is a complete theocracy...which is the opposite of religious freedom, actually...and the right to OWN ALL OF 'ETHNIC' TIBET.

This means that Tibet doesn't just want the Tibet that is shown of the map. It wants all land with Tibetans living in that land; since Tibetans can move freely between Tibet and the rest of China, giving into the whole 'ETHNIC' Tibet deal will swallow A LOT of mainland China too.

This itself isn't bad; the whole thing with everyone being subjected to a certain way of thinking (a.k.a. theocracy) might not be that great. Plus, it'll be kind of hard to raise that area up and out of poverty then, since the funding will be gone.

Anyway, I just thought it might be useful to share this information. I am neutral on the matter, by the way.
Well, the fact is regardless of what is said, words mean nothing.  Actions are what matter.  Will any of you take any action?  Will anybody anywhere really take any action?  So far only the rioters and those sent to stop the riots are actually taking action.  Is either party taking the right actions?  Nope.  Probably no where close from the looks of it.

There is only one way to make the world a better place.  Get off the computer, turn off the television and make yourself a better person.  "How does this affect what happens in Tibet?", you say.  I'll tell you how.  So long as people remain sedated by their media that takes up their lives nothing will ever change.  While the government in China may be criticized for censoring the news from those who want the truth, the fact is we in the this "great country" of America don't need heavy censoring by our government.  We're more than happy to be overloaded by our shows and gossip.  People may complain about the war in Iraq, but how many of you that complain are doing anything about it.  Any of you holding meetings with those of like minds and staging a peaceful protest?  Or are you too busy watching your favorite shows and reading the latest in Hollywood gossip.

Once a week meet with people outside of the capitol of your state if you're close enough or the court house if the capitol is too far away.  Never relent.  Never change course.  Peacefully protest the war in Iraq, the occupation of Tibet or even just that we keep sending our jobs over seas because it's "cost efficient".  Who cares what it's about.  Just do it!  Make sure you VOTE.  If you don't vote, you don't matter to politicians.  If you vote for the person that is against what you're against, then all of the politicians will be against it too!  It's as easy as that.  They want to manipulate you.  So make sure you at least get a little something out of it.

Whether it's the end of the Iraq war, a free Tibet or even just lead free toys for your kids.  Heck I don't care if it's so all televisions have to made in sea foam green!  JUST DO IT!!!
I'd say Western media is very biased, too, but in a subtle way. They seem to portray different ideas, but sometimes it all subtle shades of the same color.

Take a look at the portrayals of the Palestinians versus Israelis. It's so tilted to Israeli side, it's not even funny.

When the US supported our current al-Qaeda groups in the 70s (?) against the Soviet union, we called the al-Qaeda people "freedom fighters". That's rich in propaganda.

The US and the West are arrogant, and they have absolutely NO right to criticize China or any other country.
It's a shame that some ignorant people know nothing about Chines/Tibetan history and culture, while poke their fingers at everything the Chinese government does, simply because they hate China. Chinese government did the right thing to protect innocent ethnic Han Chinese in the riots -it's something every righteous government will do when things like this happen.
You think Tibet was the purest Shanri-la? What to know the truth about Tibet before 1959? Watch this youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJY1eK9jQ28&e
china needs to take responsibility for it's actions...

there is great potential, as an emerging superpower to create a new world politic

hilarious in this context
China has been presented with the opportunity to be a role model for the world. It has, sadly, chosen to continue with it's denial of peace and oppression of its peoples basic human rights.
The majority of the people of Tibet hold the value of truth above all else. The Chinese government has denied their country this truth. It makes perfect sense that Tibetans would fight for truth and freedom.
The USA is a country who supports religious freedom and truth, sometimes unwillingly, but it is still not condemned simply because we fought for it.
As a country it is in our best interest to promote truth and religious freedom around the world.
I strongly believe that China will not stop lying to it people unless there are consequences.
The main point of this comment is to say:

If it says
"Made it China"
DON'T BUY IT!

By buying these products you are funding the military that is oppressing the Tibetans and supporting the Chinese government in there tyranny.

As for the Olympics, support the athletes.  Support human achievement.  Support the international press from entering China. China can’t tell them to leave once the games start…

Also, If you are from China and are reading this: Demand to be treated in accordance with your birth rights. Demand that you be told the whole truth and not what your government says you can know because they "know best". If you still want to be left in the dark and remain a puppet then continue to support you government’s choices.
If not then speak up. You can make your country what you want it to be. This goes for the US as well... please vote this election!
Keep an open mind.
By sharing ideas and insights we gain new perspective of our world and how we might go about making our countries better for the sake of our people not for our wallets.
Man kind has a long way to go and progress towards enlightenment should not be controlled by paper and coins but by truth and tolerance.
A "free" Tibet is on the line, even if those folks pose no threat to China, the Government there says it is. Taiwan is in the same boat, but is will take longer as it would create world outrage if they sent in the troops. We support China as their largest buyer of consumer goods. So before you condemn them, look in the mirror.
God has blessed China to the envy of all these rumour
mongers who do not even hail from cities in the West with a large Chinese population, do not have Chinese
friends, have never seen Chinese movies or chinese operas and probably not know how to order a good Chinese meal.
How do you like to protest about French suppressed in Quebec under Canadian rule or the Hawaiians suppressed by Americans.
Ignorant people are trying to mouth opinions on a
CENSORED situation in Tibet which even the average Chinese have no idea because of the censorship.
If an American world military is running scared enough to go to war faraway in Iraq, you think China should do nothing about a bunch of monks, more trying than the cult in WACO, Texas.
You think religions are all so peaceful.  I grew up seeing boys with swollen parts in school, forced on them.
Had the monks on China have their way, there would be today much less of them by birth, even worse
for poverty.  At least today, hardly any beggar surround or confront the visitors particularly from the West.  This is not the same as the Sioux under
Chief Sitting Bull or Crazy Horse.  You are telling
China not to educate them, to feed them, built railroads, power plants, when since the Great Khan, Tibet is their province which goes much further back
than Hawaii, Alaska, the Clark Expedition and the Alamo and which is better than shipping them to the
desert.  Come on, let history decide. Asians and the rest of the world remembers and know your lies.

I just came back from China, and I would like to tell you some thing.  Ordinary Chinese do not care if there is censor ship or that some of their access is denied on the internet.  They are very happy to be finally a part of a growing and prosporous country.  As far as the situation in Tibet is concerned,  I have a few comments.
1,  Tibet is part of China, and historically been for
a long time.  Same as if California decides to
secede,  You think U.S. government,  or even other
U.S. states would allow it?  Answer is resounding
   NO.
2,  There is a huge censor ship in the U.S. both on
internet or airwaves.  Try finding any internet
site by Hamas, Havana, Palestinian or a # of
so called objectionable sites, and you will not be
able to.   Second try running a Pro PLO ad in any
newspaper in this country? see what happens?
Also CNN, BBC, or many other news media is only
broadcasting which they think their audiance wants
to see.  If you are in Hong Kong, or Malaysia, or
other Asian countries,  you hear and see a more
   balanced version.
3,  West in particular has no rights to tell China
about its Human rights issues.  More people in the
history of this planets have died in wars
initiated by the Westerners, including French and
English.  Read history about ethnic cleansing by
the European all over the world over the last
500 years, and it will make Chinese issues mere
inconvenience.  On top of that, has any one
looked into the how the turks are treated in
Germany,  or the north African in France,  why
these goverment are not taking care of their
   own modern human rights issues.
4,  Chinese goverment to its credit done what was
needed to make such a big country successful.
They learned from the West, they are adopting all
the good things from the West, and trying to keep
all the bad things out including Paris Hilton.

When ever I travel in China, I find the people to be extra-ordinary friendly, I feel safe which I do not in most U.S. cities, and I do not see that I am being watched, or followed as a foreigner.  Most government personnel are nice, and helpful.  It does not mean that China does not have its share of problems,  it is very polluted, and a big part of its populace is still very poor,  but it took Western societies over 200 years to start caring for the environment, and taking care of its poor,  why do we expect to have the Chinese do it in 25 years.   We in the U.S. still consume more energy, damage the world environment, and waste resources than any other country, how we can we with a straight face tell the Chinese any thing.   On top of that our society's consumer culture has survived mainly due to the cheap products coming from China, and the fact that Chinese have been buying our debt.  We as a country should be great full to China, and not bash it.
The people who try to apply moral relativism to excuse the occupation of Tibet by comparing it to Iraq miss one thing:

China wants Tibet occupied. The US wants Iraq to have a functioning, democratic, independent government. That is the key difference.

Also, if one were to believe that the US being in Iraq is wrong, would they not say two wrongs do not make a right in Tibet? China doesn't get a pass there. That said, I wonder if the Olympic Protests will merely backfire. Anyway, like Iraq, the Tibtetans deserve the chance to have self determination and democracy.
I have been to China 29 times over the last 15 years, and I have seen a country going through massive changes, mostly for the good. One of the causes for good, I believe, is the US influnce, driving them toward more transparancy and rule of law instead of rule of personality. We have this influence by means of commerce, not government force. If we reduce or trade with China, or pull out of the Olympics, the dialog and influcne of the USA will diminish, and China will not progress as much. Yes they have a long way to go, but they are progressing much faster than anyone has a right to ecxpect. By the way, internet censorship in China applies only to Chinese-language websites. The English language sites are unfettered. I have gotten on MSN and other English language sites in China without any diffculty. Since all Chinese students today must take a minimum of 8 years of English language instruction, China will lose all control of information soon. BTY, I have also been to Tibet. The repression is bad, but not as bad as often portrayed. It is a mixed bag.
My IP address is 122.4.226.63, and I am located in Shandong provice,China. It is interesting that I can see all these things about Tibet here.
CHINA IS NOT TIBET.
ITS A COUNTRY UNDER SEIGE. JUST LIKE CHINA WAS UNDER jAPANIN THE 40S.

SO, ALL THE GOOD CHINESE PEOPLE NEED TO THINK IS WHAT IF jAPAN WERE DOING TO THEM WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO TIBET....
TIBET IS NOT FREE, AND JUST LIKE ANY OCCUPIERS ANYWHERE ANYTIME, THE BEIJING'S SONG THAT "WE ARE DOING THIS FOR YOUR OWN GOOD "DOES NOT MAKE UP FOR THE LOSS OF FREEDOM " HISTORY HAS SHOWN SOME DIRE CONSEQUENCES TO THOSE WHO TRIED THAT.
I am Chinese. Now let me tell you the truth. I was  in Lhasa two weekd ago, and now I am living in Shanghai. What I saw in Lhasa two weeks ago are quite different from what the CNN,BBC,VOA,NBC,Washingtom Post, etc. reported. These medias reported everything aboit China with bias and unwisdom.
No country can permit violences to innocent people no matter what the riots want.
If the people in California declare independence and light fire to shops, houses and kill some innocents, what the US government would do and shoud all of us boycott the UN annual congress in New York if the US government send troops to California? If permittable, why the late President Lincoln fight with the sorthern states.
Why do not the UK let me northern Ireland break from UK?
Why did not the US government talk with terrorists after Sep.11,2001 peacefully?

What I want to say is to consider the special situations in different countries without bias. What the violators did in Lhasa are killing innocent, light fires to shops, houses and destroyed infrastructures.

This is simple.  It isn't about Tibet being a paradise or the Dalai Lama being an ideal leader.  Tibet is not China.  Tibet historically is a sovereign nation.  China invaded & imposed its rule by force, in violation of international law.  The Chinese occupation doesn't even have a reasonable pretext of legality-- China conquered Tibet simply because it could do so, & China hasn't been ostracized by the other nations of the world simply because our political & business leaders see profit in dealing with the criminals who presently rule China.  Those of us who don't care & don't protest are all complicit in this crime.  (And to those who think China is somehow "finished", you're dead wrong.  China will be the dominant world superpower by mid-century, & our failure to rein China in is now giving its leaders a taste for throwing their weight around.)
I see the problem in Tibet began when one more powerful nation subjugate other nation like what Israel has done to Palestine, Thailand to Pattani, Iraq, Iran and Turkey to the Kurds, Russia to Chechnya, India to Kashmir and Assam, etc, etc. Why can't these nations just respect other people/nations and give them their rights?
Occupation in Tibet? Are you really saying Iraq?

Everyone do your research before you start persecuting China. It's not as censored as you think it is. I was just in Beijing last summer and had more freedom there than in the US. It's so populated that you can't control anything. Also, know your facts bout Tibet. The monks were a wealthy elite class that treated Han Chinese like dogs. They killed Chinese and used the skulls for their alcohol before the Revolution came. BTW: Our "great" president GWB has censored the US media.
