Seeing black in China

BEIJING, China Quite possibly one of the busiest people in China right now are the television censors.

As international news broadcasters like the BBC World Service Television and CNN International play footage around the clock of the Tibet unrest, viewers with access to satellite TV in Beijing and across cities in China find themselves scratching their heads as reports suddenly go to black whenever the word "Tibet" comes up.

VIDEO: Monks disrupt media tour of Tibet

Sometimes the screen goes black before a report about Tibet airs.

Sometimes the screen goes black right after the report begins airing.

Sometimes the screen goes black midway through the report – as though the censor had stepped away to make a cup of tea and returned a little too late.

Sometimes the screen doesn't go to black at all, and entire broadcasts go to air without interruption.

These include a live transmission by a Hong Kong cable television crew from a Muslim quarter of Lhasa, showing Chinese security forces searching homes the day after the first riots broke out on March 14.

Or, today, when some international broadcasters such as the BBC carried dramatic pictures of Tibetan monks bursting onto a small group of foreign press on a government-orchestrated tour of Jokhang Temple and openly condemning the Chinese authorities.

I wondered whether this footage was allowed to be broadcast in full because the news presenter read over the video speaking in general terms about the situation in Tibet, and so viewers had no idea what the monks were actually saying unless they went online to read about the story.

But if a viewer did get on the Internet in China, Googled "Tibet monks," and tried to click on the Associated Press's article a message saying, "problem loading page," popped up.

The same thing happens when you try to click on the reports about the monks' outburst on the websites for BBC News, the New York Times, the Financial Times, and even China's very own state-run news agency, Xinhua

NBC video reports and blogs about Tibet on this site also have been blocked, including the World Blog, which is normally accessible in China.

VIDEO: Witness to Tibet's unrest

So in order to obtain any current news about Tibet, we – like many foreign media – have to rely on our own company Intranet.

For those without access to a company Intranet in China, they have to use a proxy server.

Or else they ask journalists. For days now, the most common refrain from my non-media friends has been, "What's happening in Tibet?" "What have you heard?"

But for once during this year of newly relaxed press regulations in China, journalists are also stumped. Tibet and the surrounding Tibetan communities in China continue to remain off-limits to the media, except for in highly controlled circumstances.

everyone knows about china's flaws. it's sad that they're presented in a biased, dichotomous way. no one believes the media of an authoritarian state. but if you believe everything cnn, bbc, etc. say; you're buying into some insidious yet pervasive propaganda. pre-1951 tibet was no paradise, and the dalai lama does the CIA's bidding. he was against putting pinochet on trial! all this utopian banter about tibetans being pure and peaceful, yet these protests were a pogrom against both chinese and muslim minority populations. the tibetans do have legitimate grievances, but the media has consistently given a propagandistic portrayal of events. http://www.michaelparenti.org/Tibet.html
This is when you separate the politicians from the leaders.  Now is the time for measurment of leadership qualities.

An immediate boycott of the games, or ALTERNATE COUNTRY should be imposed immediately, and until media is returned to tibet and airwaves uncensored to the people, no more imports from china will be accepted.  The only thing that may pass through borders would be food aid.

The same goes for all dictatorships around the globe, as well as governments that fail to feed and house at least 80% of thier population.

We have to rebuild our industrial complex anyway, It may as well start today.
Oooohhhh...this plus reading that China wants a 10 - 20 second delay for new stations broadcasting the Olympics...what a controlling country.
Absolutely unbelievable that they were allowed to host the Olympics.
Why is News (with a capital N)that China, an even more repressive dictatorship than Soviet Russia, is trying to maintain complete censorship over information to its people.  I remember (and my memory is better than Hillary's) that in the late 1940's when I was an USAF radio operator in Japan, we counted over fifty radio transmitters in China whose sole purpose was broadcasting interference to Voice of America broadcasts.

So what's new?
People always hope for truth for events happnening around this globe. But, i do believe that media often paly their roles for the different interests from different perspectives and that media try be labelled fair, which is ubiquitous throughout the world.
I wonder when the Chinese are going to start demanding the government quit censoring the information.

What can we do to help?  Can't we set up proxy servers for the people to access and get the info anyway and simply bypass any government restrictions?

Would having said proxy servers in place cause the chinese government to back down and open it up after they realize their fruitless efforts?

If this is possible, I'd be willing to donate my time and knowledge to help the chinese people get the info they want, and to help bring down the government in general.  I always wanted to be part of bringing down a government...don't care which one, just to be part of it would be fun enough.  Any government that doesn't operate in a fairly transparent manner, even ours, should be brought to its knees in front of the people.

$10 says MSNBC censors this comment.  Not to worry, it's on my blog as well, and forwarded to my chinese friends.
Thank you for your continued coverage of events in Tibet. I wanted to comment on the video interview with the reporter from The Economist on the Tibet protests.
I was surprised at his being given exclusive access on 3/14 to Lhasa, apparently (according to him) when no other foreign correspondents were there. After listening closely to what he is saying, though, it becomes clear why he was let in. His words paint a very benign picture of the Chinese authorities and their response to what is happening. He fully immerses himself in several myths about China's occupation of Tibet, and in the process ends up as, at best, an apologist for China, and at worst a virtual mouthpiece. His claim that China merely hasn't grasped that Tibet is culturally very different from China--and that this simple lack of cultural sensitivity is at the root of the conflict--rings hollow. China knows very well the deep cultural and religious differences. They have no respect for them, is all. In fact, their entire approach has been to gradually water down the Tibetan culture, through mass immigration of ethnic Chinese, restrictions on religious worship and education, etc. The railroad, which The Economist reporter touts as if it had been an altruistic gift from China to the Tibetans (and for which they are, to his mind, incomprehensibly unappreciative) is Tool #1 in this effort. What may appear to outsiders as noble economic stimuli by China is in fact a conscious plan of gradual cultural genocide. Finally, he describes the looting and destruction of non-Tibetan owned businesses by Lhasa youth as "clearly racist". In the strictest sense of the word, yes, the attacks were aimed at specific ethnicities. Yet the word "racist" carries with it a connotation of oppression; racism has significant impact only when the attackers have the upper hand in society. In Tibet, this is clearly not the case. It is, in fact, the Chinese occupation of Tibet which has been, and continues to be, racist.

So the Chinese censor their broadcasts. So what? News censorship is prevalent all over the world. Including in the US. It's simply more subtle here. Just because Americans have the First Amendment they think they have free access. I have been keeping track of foreign News Services for over ten years. I watch two from Europe and one from South America. Let me tell you: our news services are very heavily censored (voluntarily or not), specially post-9/11 and post-Iraq. Never, EVER confuse 'Freedom of Speech' with 'Lack of Censorship'!
Why not give the monks the holy grail?

World peace will be close to your statistically central stillness, like EMMA your Global Feminine Matrix Speed Governer. It is the Decimating Power of the Force Field without Error over Terrorism. There is some mathematics involved, the mathematics of our common ground. There is no inappropriate language. I am not attacking the comments of others. If there was an algorithm hidden in the bible revealing the Bible as having the formed design of a counterfeit, that is news to most people who put money in a collect plate last Sunday. You can be certain the news will have an impact on religion worldwide. Details regarding EMMA can be found at my website. I am the solution provider for the divine Mother Meera. Can I help? The world will stop at the news.
i was told by one of my older work buddies that he thinks American children will get to live in the best communist country in the world.
Today Team Tibet, The Tibetan Basketball Team announced That it will no longer participate in The 2008 Beijing 'genocidal' Olympics. after much socratic debate and Free Speech which is being denied To Their fellow country who are still imprisoned within Tibet, proper, The Team unanimously announced That They will now boycott The 2008 Olympic events. with chants of 'Long Live The Dalai Lama' and 'Tibet is Free' The Team Dharma Leader announced Their withdrawl from This event, and reciprocally asks That China withdraws its Troops from The foreign occupation of Tibet.

see This link for The Team photo:

I'm glad to see that some people know censorship exists everywhere. I am saddened by the violent confrontation, even as I realize some feel there is no other solution. Occupation is never pleasant. Freedom from Occupation is even less. Please, let's try to remember our history.
What I can't believe is how many people actually think American TV is itself not censored by the FCC at certain moments, especially politically charged show such as the Daily Show.
this situation is certainly not a new and unexpected event, the Chinese have forever kept the Tibetans in virtual bondage. Tibet would/could be one of the worlds most beautiful and peaceful countries  , but for China. Now, this uprising is not surprising. The Dalai Llama has been in exile for many years, not a choice on his part. The olympic games to be held in China should be boycotted until or unless the Chinese reach some sort of peaceful co-existant relationship with the Tibetans.

y major concerns are the ethnic cleansing that took place since the Tiennamen square incident. They fooled the Tibetan Exiled govt. with Tibet's reconstucion of the culture mainly the destoyed 16000 monasteries. We stay next to Mayan civilization to Native Americans Indians. We are being extinct yet we are still breathing this kind of notion stabs our wounds.
I have to admit, Bejing was probably not a good choice for places to host the olympics. Still, everyone seems overly critical of them. The United States and other countries have censorship, and human rights issues as well. Until you can see 'The Assasination of Richard Nixon' in the United States, I dont think they have alot of room to talk. American media is just as bad, if not downright misleading half the time. If anything I imagine whatever media would inflate and fuel the situation in Tibet, not improve it in any way. In those kinds of situations, I think the Chinese have some right to block it.

The last thing we need though, is other countries trying to interfere or impose something upon the Chinese. Its their country. I think it would be wrong to boycott the olympics to protest how the Chinese are running THEIR OWN country. Unless many countries do it, only the ones who choose to boycott, the only loss will be on the part of those that choose to.  And whoever suggested 'proxy servers', its not like the US nor anyone else has any right at all to do that, and anyhting like that would just end up blocked as well, or land a lot of Chinese people in jail. People who make comments like saying they want to 'Bring down the Chinese government' is exactly why they have censorship in the first place. They're just not helpful, and dont go against the peace and stability that it is far more beneficial to preserve, despite some of the Chinese short comings.
Could I say Hail Hilter and Death to all Jews in any any of you western media?

Do I want my children to read all those great great Paris Hilton news?

Could I report Middle-east in such a way: Palestanians are suppressed for so many years by Israelis, they want freedom, and so all the things: killing, no, murdering innnocent persons are justified and any subsequent police action is barbarian and cruel and suppressive?

Why no western media just remind you that at least thousands of tibets and monks had crossed the line, and falled into what you categorized as terrorists, by beating, killing, murdering innocent people?

And, oh, cencorsip to our dear MSNBC or BBC or CNN, but why, as a normal chinese, an employee of a foreign-invested R&D company without any government links, how could I read all this? Is it a deja vu?
"Your comment or rating has been received. However, due to caching and moderation, it may not be displayed right away. "

Ha, great freedom of speech without cencorship, if only the cencorship is done by yourself.
Good lord, the reporter from The Economist is become "at worst a virtual mouthpiece(of China)". How low can you go?
If your message can not post on internet right away, you are censored. I am not saying the Chinese government should censor my voice. However, if my post were censored here,  then you should not attacked them for doing the same thing. Please attacked the Chinese for something else, like, the lead toy.
I love General Tso's chicken.
guys, please read more about china's culture and history before you post your opinions. If US can help china boost economic better than china's government's doing, which more than 10% of GDP every year, we are pleased to have an American leader. Tibet is the poorest and brutalest area in the world, people there are completely lack of education which means they don't have personal thinking ability and they are easy to be spiritally controlled, especially for the monks. So let us teach how to think first. back to 70's, if chinese people were well educated at that time, how could the culture evolution happened?! actually, we are enjoy the economic development now. Somehow, more and more chinese are getting wealth than American do. I work at PA, i have seen so many people are struggling for food.
Americans are highly responsible for supporting the repressive Communist regime every time they buy a product made in China. Every product is laden with taxes which go to the government there to pay for the genocide of any culture they desire to eliminate. Seems to me the so-called Free World allowed Hitler to march into Poland, too in 1939, with little to no protest from anyone. Stop supporting Communism and a repressive regime by not buying made in China goods and perhaps we can do a little to slow them down.
you are biased!your comments are chidish and inconsiderate!
Well Wayne it is Friday 28 Mar and so far no censors...but you still may very well be right...
I am a Chinese living out of China. I do feel our government is stupid regarding their media control, but I also so very fed up by all the negetive and prejudice reports in western media once it comes to affairs related to China. I am not a nationalist but I would appreciate all kinds of voices with enough facts to support their views. And all the voices should not coming from just one side. Media has the responsibility to show the truth without select.
So, what happened with the group of international reporters who entered Tibet?? Besides the interviews of the Monks, where are the other voices and people that they interviewed?
China is the most brutal large country in the world.  Women are forced to have abortions if their pregnancies are unauthorized.  Dissidents of many kinds, including those who practice unapproved religions, are jailed or worse.

Why the US and other "advanced" countries continue to turn a blind eye is obvious ... there seems to be money to be made.  US consumers mostly only seem to care about low prices and not about how those low prices are achieved.

The "every country has censorship" argument is misleading and wrong headed.

The shame is that in spite of China's increasing genocide of the people, religion and culture in Tibet, as well as at home in China and around the world in Burma and Darfur--that the world leaders pretend it's nothing serious. After the Holocaust, the world pledged "Never gain", yet by allowing the Olympics to be China's reward for slaughter, the world leaders are encouraging China to continue their Holocaust. Demand your leaders take real action. Move the Olympics to a free country or at least boycott it. And athletes have a duty not to smile at tyranny, but to shout "Free Tibet" as they get their medals.
http://www.conservativeusa.org/action.htm
The notion that the construction of the railroad to Tibet is in fact a conscious plan of gradual cultural genocide is ludicrous. Why can't people accept the common-sense possibility that it may facilitate the movement of people and goods for the good of everyone? If China keeps Tibet isolated and undeveloped I am sure the West will condemn China too. I just feel the West is biased against China and from its historical atrocious behavior in China it does not deserve to have the moral high ground to lecture China on so called human rights. And the British and the French governments were the worst offenders. Go to the museums in those two countries and see how much treasures were looted from China. Then go to the museums in China and try to find art objects from the West. Does it tell you something? After they are done with looting they agreed on a Hague Convention to ban war spoils. It's just so much hypocrisy. The biased views of the governments in the West filter down to the news media and then to the people, most of whom are conditioned to blindly believe what the media says about China without bothering to verify its accuracy or analyze objectively. This situation will get worse as China is getting stronger.
Don't believe any news.No one is telling the truth.
Perhaps Dali Lama is no saint, perhaps the Chinese Government is Stalinist. My problem is lack of freedom of self determination and information. Dunno what these old guys are afraid of. It is not the end of the world not to pursue your own self interest. It is the beginning of a better life. Help, not hinder.
Robert,
If any radio station on this planet deserved blocking it was Voice of America in the 40's, 50's and 60's. And right through the American defeat in Vietnam. It wasn't voice of USA. It was voice of CIA and the United Stated did everything then that the Chinese are doing now.
HAHAHA...that is some pretty poor acting by that monk in the video.  arn't monks suppose to be peaceful and non-violent?  so whatsup with all these violent and racially motivated attacks on chinese people in tibet?
Greg.
Name some of the cultural and religious differences between Tibet and China.
Wayne
My wife is Chinese. The first words she spoke clearly in to me in English were 'Weapons of mass distruction". Learned by accident while I was glued to the Blair and Bush broadcast propaganda. Who would not like to return to those days and censor thes two accomplished liars.
The Chinese government needs to be shown as the totalitarian bully that it is.  It wants to get all of the notiriety for being a world power while hosting the Olympics while continuing to suppress the people of Tibet and supporting genocide in Darfur.  I for one, do not intend to watch or follow this year's Olympics and hope that this whole charade (of "One World - One Dream")  gets the proper adverse exposure that it deserves.
I think it is nonsense to give legitimacy to the Dalai Lama. It is rediculous in this day and age to beleive he is some kind of "God king" and reincarnation?  Please spare me! China has every right to defend its territory. The USA would not allow a state to have "autonomy" or to separate from the US. The last time that happaned there was a Civil War. The successionsts lost! Rioters in Tibet killing Han Chinese ought to be condemened by the Western press and everyone ought to support the Beijing Olympics!  I say good for the Chinese governement for the way the have handled the Tibet rioters! I will see you all in Beijing for the Olympics this Summer!
That reporter from The Economist did a great job. Otherwise people in western world only can hear one voice that never mentioned 5 young girls were burned to death by monks or part-time monks...That'd be another type of censorship.
I'm quite interested in Friedman's comment.  So what you are saying is that, the attacks on the specified ethnicities are justified?  Because they have the upperhand in the society?
It's no different when you notice all these Americans in the comments claiming how much they think they know about a situation, when their news is easily as obfuscated as mainland Chinese news, albeit in a less transparent fashion.  It's very clear how ignorant people have become considering that one of the leading news manufacturers, CNN, has created a public scandal with their riot photos, and people continue to support this cause blindly while condemning cultures they know very little about.  For those wishing to flame, it's a fact Communist China is blatantly filtering news.  However, what you are representing is a country who claims ideals far better yet ends up being equally biased.
It is obvious that all media in the world is bias.  The fact that all the Western power is so eager to critize China is obviously part of some political posturing to keep the up coming China down.  All the Western powers have blood stain on their hands.  It wasn't that long ago that the West was trying to cut up China for their own greedy needs.  I must remind everyone that the Chinese culture has a trait of remembering things for a long, long time.  When they have finally achieve super power status, its time for pay back in their mind.  That would mean one simple thing - conflict.  I hate to say this but pay back is a bitch.  Remember the what the bible said.
To the radio operator that said China blocked VOA & BBC broadcasts.  Have you recently tried listening to Radio Havana Cubs?  Who do you think tries to block their broadcast?  Yep, USA.  So just remember, EVERYONE is putting out propaganda, and everyone is trying to block each others transmissions, if they can.
China a repressor?  I agree, but whatabout the "mistake" of nuclear fuses being sent to Tiwian by the US?  Gee, we made a mistake?  I think Not!
I think we should wake up to "double standards" and that we, USA can do no wrong! We do many wrongs!  Unfortunately like most other countries, it's all about GREED!  IRAQ has OUR oil!  China forced one of our planes down when over their territory, what do you think we would do if a chinese plane flew over the USA?  Let it continue?  I think not!  So whatever standards we choose to impose upon others, be reminded, those same standards should apply to us.  Example:  Don't start a war unless you are physically threatened. Ok, say not threatened, we bomb someone for no reason, so it's ok for someone to bombus without reason,,,Fair is fari!
Chinese government is being naive trying to block the news of Tibetan protest in 21st century.  Nobody would believe the story told by the Chinese government because of the censorhip.  There is nothing wrong of sending troops to stop the riot and arrest protesters who started the violent acts.  The Chinese government really need to open up the media, if they want people around the world to believe their stories.
Thanks Greg Friedman for making some sense of the situation.... It seems one only has to scream the word racist, and in this PC world of ours, it must be the correct assertion... after all, racists are bad, right!!  Meanwhile, this blog is a bit of a farce if you are not allowed to attack the comments of others as stated at the bottom of this page....so I'll do it indirectly instead.  No one ever said the U.S. is perfect.  In fact, far from it.  However, if you want transparency in the media/government, the best chance of that happening is in the U.S.  This is pretty slow to develop as the motivation to maintain the status quo is very strong, even in our "open" society.  Still, the absence of scrutiny in some governments does not let others off the hook.  By that logic, we would never have brought down the likes of Eliot "Hooker" Spitzer.  Yes, it's slow to develop and not many perpetrators are caught, but at least some scum is distilled out of the quagmire.  I don't think there is a thinking man or woman with half a brain in their head that thinks otherwise.
I suggest, before we start "bashing" other countries on their behaviors we first try to apply the same yardstick to ourselves.  Propganda, everyone does it!  Censorship, everyone does it!  Wire tapping and intercepting cell phone messages and frecording them, everyone does it!
Chine wants Tiwan, we want Iraq.  China wants to topple Tibet, we want to topple Chavez.  Remember the "Sandanesta Freedon Fighters" sponsered by good ol USA,and where did we get the money for that?  Yep, intercepted drug monies!
Who is the greatest and largest supplier of weapons of mass destruction?  USA!  So gee, Saddam was suspected of having WMD, but we sell them!  I guess we had to eliminate him because he was cutting into our trade!
Look within and apply those same standards before you critize others.
http://www.michaelparenti.org/Tibet.html
Well written article about Tibet.
Its great that The China leaders are starting to realize that they, like the rest of us, are human being on this fragile planet! Bad press to them is intolloerable! The sooner they lose face-totally- their egos will hopefully crumble and we may all enjoy freedom & the Olympics. But it's up to them to leave Tibet alone. Remember THEY INVADED the country, mainly as they saw it as a country to exploit for the Chinese voracity for its natural resources.( check out Sth Africa acqusitions). The Tibetans are just an expendible item to their program of survival, the rest of the world can all go to hell as far as they are concerned! Unfortunately, even given the phone call by the soon to be EX-president & giving him cuedos for doing so,it all boils down to the economic factors. If China wants to call in its huge FX 'investment'in $US paper(worthless), it would herald the total coillapse of the USa economy, & no one can let that happen. So, like most struggles they will be resolved so neither party will 'loose face'. Poor Tibetans! They will be thrown to the dogs if history is to repeat itself. FREE TIBET- Om Mana Padme Hung!
DURING THE OLYMPICS,AT THE TIME WHEN CHINA'S SECURITY FORCES ARE IMPLEMENTING THEIR BROADWAY QUALITY SHOW TO DECEIVE THE FREE WEST,THE INTELLECTUAL ELITE OF THE PRO-DEMOCRACY MOVEMENT WILL BE ORGANIZING MASSIVE PROTESTS HOPING TO REPLICATE THE SOCIAL AND HISTORICAL CIRCUMSTANCES THAT LET TO THE COLLAPSE OF THE EASTERN BLOCK COUNTRIES. THIS IS CHINA'S MAIN CONCERN-A DOMINO TYPE OF EFFECT LEADING TO THE COLLAPSE OF THE COMMUNIST REGIME. LITTLE TIBET WILL PAY THE PRICE AND WILL LIGHT THE TINY SPARK TO THE GIANT FLAME OF FREEDOM AND REFORM. THE CAREFULLY ORCHESTRATED OLYMPIC STADIUM SHOW WITH THE RED DRAGONS AND THE FANCY FIREWORKS WILL NOT BE BRIGHT ENOUGH TO DISTRACT HUMANITY'S ATTENTION TO THE COMMUNIST REGIMES PERSECUTIONS, ARRESTS, BEATINGS, DISAPPEARANCES AND  EXECUTIONS OF THE BRAVE PEOPLE THAT DARED TO STAND AGAINST A BRUTAL DICTATORSHIP. FOR ONE RARE TIME IN HISTORY, THE WEST WILL GET A PRECIOUS OPPORTUNITY, REMINISCENT TO THE ONE OF EAST GERMANY'S 1989 COLLAPSE
TO CONTRIBUTE THROUGH THE FREE MEDIA AND BRING REAL CHANGE.
lol man if your trying to compare things here in the west with the crap going on out east then you more lost then a eskimo looking for a blizzard in a sand box
Live never ceases to amaze me. somebody said boycot China's Olympic games.. U know that might be a good idea, but what of the little people, the guy who has spent the last 3 years building his portion of the stadium in China's capital city.. I mean really who gives a f*** here what gies on there in Tibet. Evil things, like murders to innocent ladies going to college, child abductions, high cost of oil. Time & place people.. Just maybe do you think the perople in Tibet have a real issue with China.. if so let them deal with it.. I personally do not care what goes on there. There is things here in this country that needs dealing with. like electing a good president, and placing the current one on trial for crime's against the people of Afganistan & Iraq.. goes to show what believing in a god or in the presidents belief in chist.. follow the 10 rules.. if you dare..
China is finished.
