'Normal life' escapes Palestinian militant

Posted: Friday, March 21, 2008 3:02 PM

BETHLEHEM, West Bank – Ahmed Balboul hoped that renewed peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians might save his life. But as a senior figure in Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, a violent militia affiliated with Fatah, Balboul had a number on his head – he had been wanted by the Israelis since 2000 because they believe he was responsible for the deaths of Israeli citizens.

In one of his last interviews with NBC News, Balboul disavowed violence and expressed his support for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. "I want to live a normal life. I am not hiding anymore. We will give a chance for peace," he said to NBC News this past December.

VIDEO: Ahmed Balboul welcomed visitors to Bethlehem and shared his hopes for Mideast peace in a Dec. 24, 2007 interview

Despite his support for the peace process and his hopes for an amnesty agreement with the Israelis, Balboul’s number came up. On March 12, he and three other Palestinian militants were shot and killed while riding in a car in the West Bank city of Bethlehem.

According to Palestinian security officials, the others killed include the commander of Islamic Jihad in the Bethlehem area, Mohammed Shehadeh, and two others who were also members of Islamic Jihad.

According to the Israeli Army, the border police force identified a number of armed Palestinians inside a car and opened fire. Many human rights groups have called the killings "extra-judicial" because there were no arrests or trial. The Israeli Army said that three rifles were found in the car, and that all four had been involved in attacks against Israeli civilians.

The Israeli raid on the Palestinian militants came at an embarrassing time for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the head of Fatah, who has been trying to tighten his grip on the security situation in the West Bank by getting a number of Palestinian militants off of Israel’s wanted list and enrolled in the local security forces.

According to Palestinian security officials, 418 gunmen from Fatah’s Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade have received amnesty from Israel and an additional 230 are going through the amnesty process in the West Bank. Palestinians say that the four militants who were killed had been hoping to be included in that amnesty agreement with Israel, but Israel had refused their requests.

Israel strongly defended the killings as a legitimate response to terrorist acts. "Yesterday, in Bethlehem, we again proved that the state of Israel will continue to hunt and to strike any murderer who has Jewish blood on his hands," said Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak. "It is unimportant how much time has elapsed. Israel’s long arm will reach him."

Israel’s defense was little comfort to the thousands of Palestinians who gathered to attend prayers and funerals for the four militants last week.

Sana, Balboul’s wife, said that he had expressed hope about the future and the potential for peace between the Israelis and Palestinians, even saying to her recently, "One day we will go to Jericho," referring to the West Bank city currently occupied by the Israelis.

Instead, he is yet another casualty in the ongoing conflict, leaving behind Sana, three children, but still no peace.

There should be no amnesty for these monsters! Live by the sword, die by the sword!!!
"Yesterday, in Bethlehem, we again proved that the state of Israel will continue to hunt and to strike any murderer who has Jewish blood on his hands," said Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak.
...and the talking monkeys in the stands cheered...
What about a "normal life" for those people he killed in the past? He is not a sympathetic figuire pining for a chance to come out of the shadows.  Good riddance to cowards like him

We Christians, Jews, and Muslims all share the same God; we just look to him through different prisms.  And while we each perceive him differently, he looks at us with his one set of eyes, in and those eyes, we are all his children.

I cannot help but think that his eyes are also filled with tears when he sees us killing each other.

I pray for peace each and every day.  I have forgiven those who have tortured and killed my family members.  If there's anything else I can do to help bring peace to the world, I want to know.  If there's anything that you can do to help bring peace to the world, I hope you find the courage to do so and know that I will be standing at your side.
The ignorant and baseless claims of religion are going to drag this world back into a 'dark age' if something is not soon done.

People who claim to be able to live on after they die, despite no proof or evidence, need to  accept the logical criticism of their beliefs.  Belief in an 'afterlife' where you will live forever allows humans to commit the most horrible anti-social and psychopathic actions in the pursuit of that 'eternal life'.

Our whole modern world was built thanks to logic and reason.  Why are we letting these throw-backs tear it all down?
Those who live by the sword can expect to die by the sword! Expect no mercy !
How sad for this man, and all other peacemakers.  We all pray to the same Creator, who teaches us to love each other.  Can we just keep it simple?  Is there hope still?  I guess as long as people like Mr. Balboul continue on, there is still hope.
"Instead, he is yet another casualty in the ongoing conflict, leaving behind Sana, three children, but still no peace."  Aww, too bad for the poor, innocent terrorist and his family.  Get a grip, you bleeding heart liberals.  The jagged edge of a filthy blade awaits your throat as well as anyone whom the terrorists feel deserving of their twisted jihad.  Grow up, or you will only die confused at the hands of militancy.
Aaawe, "poor thing," he murdered innocent people and then "hoped" for "peace".....The "audacity" of Israel to kill him, to defend their country and people.
Another killing - then followed by another killing by the other side - then followd by another killing by the other side...\\  There will be NO PEACE in that part of the world until BOTH SIDES are willing to sit down and deal with each other in an honorable fashion.  As I do not expect this in my lifetime we should be ready fot this cycle of killing & murder to continue indefinitely.  Let the Peace activists decry the violence and the diplomats & politicians try their utmost.  As too many on both sides are unwilling to settle for anything less than TOTAL victory over the other side peace must be considered a pipedream that will be best phrased as "Not in this century Giacomo".
If he truly wanted peace and feared the Israelis, he should have surrendered to them and done his time for his past crimes.
If I wanted to give peace a chance and just live a "normal life", I would not go joy riding in a car full of armed members of the Islamic Jihad.  Sorry, but the anti-Israeli slant in this report does not pass the smell test.
The situation is pretty cut and dried. Palestine was there first, Israel is an invading European/American enemy.  If there was a genuinely good intent, giving the Jewish people a homeland, they would have carved that homeland out of Germany or the U.S., maybe Russia.  But, because of white supremecism, they decided that since the white bible had "Israel" as the Jewish homeland, it should be that way again. The palestinians have every right to fight back against western funded white supremecist terrorism.
Why should we believe a man who admittedly killed innocent civillians?  Just because he got older and now claims to support peace does not make him innocent.  He was still associating with Jihadis... anyone with a basic understanding of Islam knows that the religion justifies lying to non muslims in order to advance islam... this is called "taqiya."

If Mr. Balboul truely wanted to distance himself from his violent and terrorist past then he should have not continued to associate with violent terrorists.

We sit on a high horse preaching to other countries how they should handle their terrorism problems yet when it happens to us we realize that diplomacy and human rights will not make these animals stop terrorism.

It is a sad reality that the only way to get rid of evil is to fight it... more often than not that fight is violent and deadly.
He was a terrorist and a murderer, and he deserved what came to him. I hope the families of his many victims will find at least a little comfort knowing that he will never again murder an Israeli.

By the way, the only "real" Palestine is located in Texas. "Palestine" in Israel was the name given to the area by the Romans who occupied it 2000 years ago. They called it that to insult the Jewish people. Israel, which includes Gaza (where the long-since vanished Philistines, the only true "Palestinians" lived) and Judea and Samaria (currently occupied under the title "West Bank") is the birthright of  the LEGITIMATE children of Abraham.

Lahawez Jabari, you should be ashamed of yourself. A true journalist would research the facts before publishing an article . But then, this is just another piece of Islamofascist propaganda, isn't it?
Oh, please. Spare me the violins. He was a
vicious murderer.
"According to the Israeli Army, the border police force identified a number of armed Palestinians inside a car and opened fire. Many human rights groups have called the killings "extra-judicial" because there were no arrests or trial."

This is why I am no longer sympathetic to Israel.
How many murders by Israel will be ignored byt he world? No wonder Hitler was so popular. Israel is a monstrous state of terror.
In Texas there is no statuet of limitations for murder  Killing bystanders is an unforgivable crime and is a death penality offence in the state of Texas  Israel to its credit does not forgive Murder and deals with it the way Texas does they just do it quicker
Are we forgetting that the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade are terrorists? I feel for his wife and children, and its sad that all this has taken place after he seemingly reformed, but terrorists are just that - terrorists. Calling them militants just sugar coats the fact that they are, simply, murderers. We should never rejoice when any of G-ds creatures are killed, but lets not celebrate the lives of terrorists and murderers either.
I have supported the Palastinians view on some issues. As a middle class working white American...I have always prided myself (maybe pride is the wrong word, but you get the point) on being fair, non-prejustice and un-biased on a lot of issues... but a man with his history... he had his due coming. Yes.. it is an occupation. Yes, they deserve their own state... but what this man has been accused of... and what he has admited to... he got his due. Period. This was not unjustified.
I find it hard to believe that one day you are a terrorist willing to kill innocents and all of a sudden another day you want to be fully forgiven and pardoned and resume the life of a normal person in society.  Once a killer, always a killer.  You should pay the ultimate price for terrorism.  It looks like he finally paid that price.  He should have thought of that before he started killing innocent people for his cause.  May the Lord have mercy on his soul.
Boo Hoo
Your article needs to state what exactly Ahmed Balboul did to the Israelis that got him targeted and killed. He must have been involved in acts of murder and terrorism, but your article is vague, for some reason, on those facts. Please be more thorough so the reader can get some context.
This conflict between Israelis and Palestinians (Hamas and Fatah), Israelis against Hesbollah (supported by Iran and Syria)is I believe is a religious conflict and of course land when Israel was formed in 1948 if I'm not wrong. Many U.S. and U.N. diplomats have tried to broker peace to no avail. The west should have known it that but Pres. Bush tried it to at present.
We can send the best diplomats to broker peace but no one can and will never achieve it. Only the warring parties can achieve it if they are willing and really want peace.
Hamas and Hesbollah of Iran and other Islamic states or countries especially KSA must learn to live and let live in order to achieve PEACE, but because of their culture and religion, I doubt it but there is hope that they will realize that in the future.
I really want to solve this problem diplomatically but, after centuries of trying diplomatically, we must solve this through FORCE and I mean force. I will give an ultimatum to all this terrorists states/countries that we will help them achieved peace but, if they don't want peace, then we should remove them off the map. It will be PEACE OR THEY ALL BECOME MARTYRS.
I smell media manipulation in this article. As a reserve soldier, I had the opportunity to stop cars for routine checks (as I do now, within Israel, as a volunteer policeman) and nearly paid with my life on several occassions. If this man was turning a new leaf in the story of his murderous life, what was he doing riding around with active and armed members of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade?
Terrorists gave up their human rights the day they took anothers life.  They should never be given any amnesty.  I do not blame Isreal for taking action, what are they suppose to do wait until these terrorists open fire on them with the rifles found in the car.  No, they should get exactly what they are asking for and expecting to hand out, a death sentence.
well its sad to see that no peace talks are under way. this guy hoped that things will get better. i think that international cout of justice should investigate israeli war crimes and punish israelis that have palestinian blood on their hands.
Isreal can kill 100's of Palestinians, entirely justified or not - but this will not change things. Peace will never happen given the toxic mix of religion, birth rates and limited resources in the Middle East. Neither Abrahamic religions nor Marxism (which is just another religion) nor anything short of providing a good enough life for enough people will ever bring peace to the Middle East. Whatever, Arthur C. Clarke's "Childhood's End" makes for good reading, but I don't think humans will be so fortunate to have either devine or alien intervention before we extinguish ourselves.
When will the US stop giving billions of it's citizens tax dollars in hand-outs to this brutal occupying nation? The money would be better spent on helping the indigenous Palestinians rebuild their shattered lives, homes and nation. It is the decent thing to do and would be the first step in healing this gross injustice that has been perpetuated by the Zionists pulling the strings of the US administration.

Israel has been a non-stop war crime ever since the Balfour declaration of 1917, when the zionists conned the Brits into sponsoring their takeover and promptly started shooting Britain's peacekeepers in the backs whenever they got in the way of the zionists' pre-planned war, or merely tried to do their jobs.

Israel's con hasn't changed one little bit in 90 years. It's amazing that Americans are so ignorant of the history of one of the longest, most dangerous and most racist wars of all time.

This old Yemeni philosopher, Khaldoon (9th cen), wrote something that still rings true today.

He said: people tend to emulate their oppressors.

Jews in Israel, many of them, were oppressed in Europe. They appear to emulate what was done to 'them' using the Palestinians as punching bags. The pictures of malnourished Jews in Germany must be reversed (psychologically) by pictures of tanks roaming the Palestinian refugee camps implicitly saying: Uber alles..

Israel is a theocratic state. They have a religious symbol on their flag.

We should not be allied with Israel.

Live by the sword, die by the sword.
One less to worry about.  If he was travelling with Islamic Jihad gunmen it hardly seems like he had espoused any sincere change of heart.
Very sympathetic article. It might also be nice if you interviewed the families of the Isrealis he murdered and attended their funerals too.
God bless Israel, The USA should take a page out of Irael's book on how to deal with terrorists. Then we would truly be safe in America..
On this Easter I find it hard to believe the Israelis should continue to kill anyone they decide should die based on their beliefs alone. Prove your case--the "terrorist" explaination for acts against others is not enough in Israeli or the USA or anywhere without fair trial--or else all are terrorists!
let's see here ...It seems you wish for us to feel sorrow for this man ...Who by his own choice lived by the sword and thus died by it ...What I find sad is that instead of trying to do something for themselves to better their lives they only live to fight but then I guess they are paid to do this because they sure don't produce anything to export except poorly made rockets
Are we really supposed to feel sorry for this guy? This story is such liberal media nonsense. This guy is a known terrorist in my homeland and here we are paying last respects? Give me a break.aaa
Good riddance.
Live by the sword, die by the sword.
Were the murders done by Ahmed Balboul and his freaks done with a legal arrest and trial?  I am sick of terrorists and their pathetic supporters demanded "justice" when they have given none.  They are all psychopaths and have no rights whatsoever.
This is so biased. He is referred to as a militant, not the terrorist he is, and is "believed" to have been responsible. He was the head of a terror organization. Of course he was responsible. Msnbc is blatantly biased and it is disgusting to see this in the media. He is portrayed as a family man and as a caring human being. He was a maniacal terrorist. The "peace" he refers to never once mentions with the Israelis, but he refers to the calm he wants after Israel is destroyed and its citizens murdered. This is what he wanted achieved. Hope he burns in hell. This is disgusting and revolting. The animal is justly dead.
Maybe other Palestinians will think twice and consider supporting peace instead of committing  murder.
Perhaps if the US would defend its citizens in the same manner it would make our enemies think twice about trying to hurt us.
But wait we first would have to get the hollywood genius consortium's permission and approval
As John Lennon said, "Give Peace A Chance". We should all hope and pray that the modeast finds peace so their children can have a life.
Maybe if the Terrorist wasn't blowing up innocent people they would have less worry about police chasing them. Come on, MSNBC, what are you doing here? This guy's a sleaze!
Score one for the good guys.  This guy was traveling in a car with known Palestinian terrorists.  I guess he must have been collecting for the Red Cross.  I hope he suffered.
Let me see, he renounces violence and killing then goes around armed with leaders of the groups dedicated to violence and killing... and winds up dead and people think, "Wow, we didn't see THAT coming."  Funny, I did.
Justice was served.
