McDonald’s changes lids to save German hedgehogs

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the zeal of the recycling-conscious German public. Little did I know at the time that one waste product was potentially life threatening – at least for German hedgehogs.

Hedgehogs, spiny creatures which are native to Africa, Asia and Europe, are so beloved in Germany that they led McDonald’s Germany to introduce a new, hedgehog-friendly design for its McFlurry ice cream treat containers.

Two years ago, McDonald's Germany was contacted by BUND, one of Germany’s largest environmental groups, which reported that up to 100 hedgehogs had been killed as a result of being caught in the lid holes of the popular McFlurry treat.

VIDEO: A hedgehog interacts with the new McDonald's McFlurry container

"There were no solid statistics on hedgehog deaths caused by McFlurry lids," said Alexander Schramm, a McDonald's spokesman in Munich. "But, because our company had confronted the same problem in the U.K. in 2006 and had already changed the product line, we decided to do the same in Germany."

The re-design process included several different lid-sizes and cover flaps, which could prevent hedgehogs and other small animals from getting stuck inside the containers and, as a result, starving to death.

"This was not a marketing campaign. It simply did not involve big financial and organizational measures to make the change," Schramm says.

But the conscientious move surely hasn’t been lost on the German public, including Ulrike Pachzelt, who runs a small hedgehog shelter outside of Frankfurt called "Hedgehog Island" that takes in an average of 1,000 sick, underweight or injured hedgehogs per year.

"The little fellows became a passion for me 17 years ago," said Pachzelt, "but I think they are extremely popular in Germany because of Mecki, the hedgehog, a comic figure, which was introduced by a popular German magazine back in 1949."

Thanks to the new McFlurry lips, hopefully the little creatures will continue to charm Germans for generations to come.

OMG is Bund like peta or something?
wow.....i think we need some better news
THIS HAPPENS TO SEA TURTLES AS WELL AS THEY MISTAKE PLASTIC BAGS FOR SQUID AND THEN STARVE. OTHER SMALL ANIMALS GET THEIR HEADS AND SNOUTS STUCK IN FAST FOOD CUPS AS WELL. PLEASE CRUSH ALL FAST FOOD CONTAINERS AND CUT UP PLASTIC BAGS IF YOU DO NOT RECYCLE THEM. THANKS!
Thank you Mac.  It is nice to know that not all Giant Corporations grind the little guys under their Jack Boots.  Did the fun loving Ronald have a hand in this?

they have just decided the same for French hedgehogs.
You know, if people everywhere in the world would put just half as much energy into solving real problems like poverty and hunger, and addressing real crises with education and health care, the status quo might actually improve. It never ceases to amaze me how people will sooner worry about some dumb animal that isn't crucial to the survival of humanity instead of working on very real problems that threaten civil peace and justice everywhere.
Maybe if people would discard their trash in a receptacle instead of on the ground, this wouldn't be a problem.
The hedgehog in  German tradition goes back a lot further than 1949. It seems in this historically revised world nothing is tolerated as part of German history/tradition unless it is post WWII!
I don't suppose many people will comment on this. People would rather hear about how evil these big companies are.
I thought this story was about how McDonald's had decided to stop using hedgehog meat in it's hamburgers in Europe. Now, if only we could get them to stop using rode kill in their hamburgers in Mexico, not to mention the dog meat in China. In this country they mix soy meal with 15-year-old dairy holstien meat.
I don't live in Germany any more, but "Mecki" is truly beloved - when we found one that didn't belong on the property (they do suck out brooding hen's eggs), they were picked up with leather gloves and given a polite "transfer" to a more suitable neighborhood. Moles, too, were well liked - they aerated the soil without mechanical means.
Good job McDonalds, and good job Germany
It's so rare that a large company would take a simple action like this for no financial reward.  Why do people have to be synical about it instead of congratulating McDonalds for a humanitarian act?
Dear Juliane Jaeger. These problems exist because mankind is so self centered and doesn't care about nature!
Yay!!!  I love hedgehogs and am glad to McD doing something to help them.
Juliana Jaeger, you are sh*ting me, right?  So you believe that only things that are directly benificial to humans are worth caring.  That is the epitomy of anthropocentrism.  It is because of people like you that we humans are slowly destroying this world.  Have you ever paused to think that humans do not own earth and its purpose is not solely for our survival?
While I am not a Peta type person, I think that little steps like this are great. And to the people who think that its pointless to waste time on something like this instead of 'solving' problems for humans should remember that animals were here much longer than humans have been and it is our job to protect those who can't protect themselves. If we did not have animals, we could not survive either! And it is OUR fault that humans and animals have problems, not the other way around.
All animals are important to humanity because the way we treat animals reflects directly on how human beings treat each other.  It's impossible to have compassion for animals without having compassion for all life forms.  Now, McDonalds must be pressured to extend that compassion to the way it treats its farm animals
In response to the post which stated....."It never ceases to amaze me how people will sooner worry about some dumb animal that isn't crucial to the survival of humanity..."
Well I hate to tell you that Humanity isn't so HUMANE toe each other OR this living sphere of a planet we live on.  MOST if not ALL of the current problems on this earth were HUMAN created and some of the species are so ignorant I'm amazed we as a species still even exist.
J. Jaeger - How does McDonalds making an appropriate adjustment to their packaging to prevent injury to an animal anyway prevent or interfere with anyone tackling weightier issues such as poverty, hunger, etc?

Kudos to McDonlds for doing the right thing.
If we keep saving animals from their own stupidity the earth will be overflowing with stupid animals, (who wants THAT?) To hell with the hedgehogs! teach 'em to smoke
People like Juliana Jaeger are idiots...I would rather save animals than idiotic selfish humans any day...
Why coulden't we try to save animals and people?  Compassion isn't something that has to be rationed is it? It is heartening to hear of a big corporation doing the right thing.
Too Bad, I like a little hedgehog with my Mcflurry
It can be said the problems with the human race have a direct correllation to the treatment of this earth and its animals.  We bulldoze whole forests to create new apartment complexes and subdivisions, leaving deer and other animals to become pulverized by cars and trucks on our roads.  There is no relocation anymore, because that would just be too expensive for the big developers who want to keep all the money for themselves.  For all you people who are so negative about this light-hearted and charming story, what is so wrong with your life that you have to degrade a good deed? Are you so unhappy with your situation that you have to write negative comments on an MSN message board? I feel sorry for you that you can't be happy for one good deed that was done to help out some defenseless animals.  Animals do not have anyone to speak for them- we need to help when we see situations like the hedgehogs getting stuck in cups.  These small and generous acts of kindness have a much larger impact.  Maybe instead of directing such negativity to a heartwarming story you should think about ways you could change your attitude- like volunteering at an animal shelter.  This story was a bright spot in my day... I have heard enough about war, killing and bloodshed.  Bring on some positive news!!
It is our fault that these animals needs to dig in garbage for food anyway.  We took away their forests and their land.  Don't call them stupid animals when it's your McDonald's cup you littered on the street and it's their only source of food.  Shame on you.
No matter what the issue, why do people want to argue about opinions? What harm is there if McDonalds wants to make animal friendly packaging? A good deed is a good deed! And no, I am not a member of PETA. Well.. unless it stands for people eating tasty animals!
These animals were here way before we ever were they have just as much of a right if not more to be here than we do. We are the one who created smog we are the ones who cut down the forest. We are the ones who cause oil spills we are the one who caused global warming. The animals are the ones who suffer, We are the dumbs ones!
God's message to man:
We are to take care of the animals on this planet; man pollutes,so animals suffer. Good job, McDonalds. Now, wouldn't it be wonderful if all the human problems could be so easily solved?
Jiliana Jaeger. Everything matters. You can't save the world until you think about the smaller picture.
Juliana is a hunter, so her philosophy doesn't surprise me.

Beware the Igel Empire !!
Hedgehogs are cool !!
Doing the right thing is doing the right thing. If more people would stop yelling about world issue and even do some little thing towards solving them, it would go a long ways.
When people start valuing the life of an animal (whose sole purpose for existance is food for the next animal up on the food chain) they are no longer human in my eyes. You cannot place a value (aka animal > human) on a human life. ever.
Better to do something, than do nothing at all.
Children need to know that grownups care about their world.  This is an animal that exists in different part of the world and news about them can actually help a child read and research to find more info about them. My 2nd graders love animals and the hedgehog is one of them. Thanks for saving them.  We need to change other products that might unknowingly be hurting other animals.  Ms. Sal
In response to the post which stated....."It never ceases to amaze me how people will sooner worry about some dumb animal that isn't crucial to the survival of humanity..."
Well, it seems to me that this is something that can be solved, and easily, so why add to any other suffering in the world?
Koodos to Mickey D's! Society has become so wasteful and destructive. We should all start to recycle and take care of our enviroment most of all our wildlife!
nice to see Mc Donalds taking responsibility and action....
All such efforts are important and we are working on the bigger problems as well,it will take time to resolve the big issues, there will be more after that
Ray,what's wrong with you,are you on "ice" or something? Do you care about humans or any other living things? I'd hate to be a friend or relative of yours! Uncaring,self-centered people like you are one of the MAJOR PROBLEMS in our world!!!
I hate to tell Ms. Jaeger now, but the animals aren't the "dumb" ones- it's the people who think they're better than animals, when in fact, MAN is the one species on this planet who continually comes up with newer, better ways to destroy it for ALL species.

Understanding that every living being has as much right as any other to live in a clean, safe environment is only the beginning. And yes, I AM a dirt-loving, tree-hugging, Pagan, hippie, freak. Just wanted that out in the open before someone decides to toss it out there as a reason why no one should care what happens to the creatures who die on a daily basis in our non-biodegradable waste.
It is a small issue for McDonalds. They have already said they changed UK lids for the same reason. Animals are not stupid, however, they don't know about plastic lids or plastic bags. Environmentally, I believe that it is good to maintain the balance
It's grea that they changed it but I have to wonder why they didn't change the lid world wide when they were first informed of the problem. What, other countries don't have hedgehogs and other animals of similar size....
Great decision by McDonald's!  I had no idea that hedgehogs were so popular, but anything to save even the smallest among us is a great thing.  It's sad to me that so many would post negatively about saving an animal.  The way to save the world is one creature at a time.
Their is so many people in the world, where we should be able to assist in helping the earth, natural habitat and world hunger as well. I am referrring to the womam who said we should care about more important things than an aniaml. The problem is NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE WILL GET OFF THEIR BUTTS AND DO ANY-THING BUT COMPLAIN...Donate time to your town to pick up litter, take old blankets to an animal shelter or a homeless shelter. Go on line and sign animal petitions, donate to a fund for starving children, do something besides cutting down some person or company that attempts to do something positive. People have destroyed the earth with litter, because they are too busy, lazy and ignorant to use a trash can, do not blame nature and animals, we are pushing them out of their natural habitat....GET INFORMED BEFORE YOU MAKE NASTY COMMENTS...
Anything that reduces suffering is good.  Pointless suffering - whether it's humans or animals - is the worst, especially when it is the result of something as trivial and easy to fix as a cup lid.  Thank you, McDonald's.
The amount of non-biodegradable trash throw out on the side of highways & into our waterways is truly a national embarassment. Areas of the Pacific Ocean are clogged with millions of tons of plastic waste that will never break down. What exactly is the EPA doing to protect our enviroment?
what is this about some  co going pc if u have an  mcduck u better sell it fast
Yes, Juliana.  The only animals worth saving are humans.  All the rest of the animals in the world are dumb and unworthy.  The gospel according to an idiot.  Forget that animals are killed because of humans.  Why, oh why is there such stupidity in the world?
To whom it all concerns about the stupidity of stupid animals.  For one the hedgehogs have been around and haven't changed for 15 million years.  Two, they are insect eaters.  Reading some where and dont' quote me on this one, if insects were left alone and not killed or eatten, they would take over the world.  Everything has a purpose in life and if just one was messed with the balance in life would change.  I'm sure Juliana wouldn't be happy to know that in your life you will eat about 8 insects, at night while you are asleep, including spiders?  I don't think they are that dumb in your life anymore.  I understand you worry about other people starving, but when we screw w/ the invironment it messes things up.  Like the bees are dying off all over the US.  We need to change our view on our lives and help the invironment.  Turning off lights and water when not using them.  Taking more public transportation or riding a bike, and yes saving a dumb stupid animal does help everyone around them.  In my little town they have put up wind mills and lots of them.  They dot our hillside and I'm glad they are there. Just doing one little thing and learning it before going on to another can help, and not just some dumb animal.
