Sex scandal rocks Hong Kong

Edison Chen, a popular singer, actor and TV host in Asia, was hoping American audiences would discover him when Christopher Nolan's newest installment in the Batman series, "The Dark Knight" is released in the United States sometime later this year.

Instead, Americans are getting their first taste of this young Hong Kong actor via one of the largest sex scandals to hit the Hong Kong/Chinese film scene in recent memory.

The scandal, now known as the "Edison Chen Incident," exploded when digital photographs showing Chen apparently performing sexual acts with other Hong Kong celebrities, Bobo Chan and Gillian Chung, turned up on prominent Hong Kong Internet bulletin boards systems (BBS) and celebrity blogs.

The episode not only raises important questions about privacy and censorship, it is arguably the former British colony's biggest scandal in years and has secured a place on newspaper front pages every day since it broke a couple of weeks ago.

Laptop repair gone wrong
In the days after the release of the photos, Hong Kong police investigating the case tracked the source of the photos to a computer service center where Chen had taken his laptop for repairs. Police arrested eight employees of the service center in connection with the photo release since the discovery, and announced that they believed over 1,300 racy photos of celebrities had been stolen.

In places like Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China, where the hunger for celebrity news is ravenous and invasive, the daily leak of new images has kept the story on the tabloids’ front pages, alongside breathless updates on the stars and ongoing legal proceedings.

While the tabloid buzz has currently settled on the stars already exposed in the photos, much of the discussion on Chinese and Hong Kong blogs has been speculation over which other actresses and musicians will be implicated. Rumors of a tawdry video showing Chen’s onetime girlfriend, Maggie Q., who Americans may know from Mission Impossible III, Live Free or Die Hard, has kept hundreds of thousands of Chinese netizens glued to online forums and chat sites waiting for updates.

Hong Kong singer Gillian Chung, left, told the press she was "naive and silly" after racy photos that showed her partially nude with Edison Chen were widely circulated on the Internet.

Police handling and privacy rights
Outside of the realm of the gossip reporting, an interesting debate over Internet rights and the Hong Kong police's handling of the scandal has emerged. Concerns over the police's ability to deal with cyber crimes first arose when they were forced to make an embarrassing retraction after new photos mysteriously appeared on Feb. 7 – a day after the police had confidently announced that the probable source of the leak had been caught.

Furthermore, the police have been under fire from both Hong Kong civil liberties groups and legislators after Commissioner of Police Tang King-Shing declared, incorrectly, that even the mere possession of the tawdry photos could be illegal and grounds for arrest.

Shing’s words proved to be inflammatory as netizens nervously wondered whether the police would indeed arrest or punish the tens of thousands of people who had already downloaded or seen the images.

Shing’s interview even sparked an angry protest led by prominent Hong Kong lawmaker and activist "Long Hair" Leung Kwok-Hung outside of police headquarters in Wan Chai. The protestors accused the police commissioner of fear-mongering and demanded he clarify his statements.

The seeming ham-handed handling of the case has left the police on the defensive as they now find themselves having to allay public fears about privacy and a perception of selectiveness in investigating high-profile Internet pornography cases more rigorously than others.

The latter problem can be fixed in the short-term through a recommitment to investigating and prosecuting cyber crimes. However, concerns over privacy and government regulation of the Internet will certainly, for better or for worse, draw eerie comparisons to the regulations that currently rule just across the border in mainland China.

Star’s image battered
Meanwhile, Chen, who had developed a large teenage girl fan base in Asia through his singing and acting roles, now finds himself at the center of a nasty public backlash against his carefully cultivated image.

There has been a growing public perception both in the local blogs and many public forums that whether or not these images were made consensually, Chen took advantage of the girls he appeared with.

While he has since issued a public statement via a YouTube video posted on his website (Chen has been in Canada since the scandal broke), it would seem that the damage has already been done. Since the images were leaked, Chen has been dumped from what was to be a soon to be released Stephen Chow (Kung-Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer) film.

While the Hong Kong glitterati have had their fair share of sex scandals, none of them compare in terms of the speed and voraciousness of coverage. It will be interesting to see if Chen can ride out the negative publicity engulfing him, and whether he can parlay it to jumpstart an ailing career, a la U.S. celebrities Paris Hilton and Tommie Lee who were caught in similarly compromising positions.

Editor's note: Thank you for your comments. This blog contained an incorrect photo of Edison Chen earlier, it has been removed.

The picture in the article is not of Edison Chen, but of a Taiwanese singer named Jay Chou.
This is just smut.

People's private lives should be kept private.

No one wants to hear this.

Scandals are embarassing and the best thing to do is to cover it up. Why ruin this man's career and reputation.

If they really cared about the young man they would get the elders of his community and talk to him.

Obviously he is missing the "moral decency chip".

The only good these type of articles do is to caution others to watch their conduct as this has certainly ruined his career.

What a shame.

Actaully, they all look like adults who knew what they were doing. Regardless of who's right or wrong in the leak of the recording. It's about time Hong Kong and Asian fans wake up and stop idolising the immoral fakers. They make a mockery of the world we live in by pretending to be better then all of us and making money off the back of their fakeness. They make Britney Spears seems so much more genuine, at least she is what we see. These people should certainly apologise, to their parents. They should be ashamed!
I'm just wondering, does Julie Lifeskills411 have a patent on the so-called "moral decency chip" and if so , would she be the one to have it implanted into all of our brains so that nobody in the world will ever have to deal with any of this nonsense anymore?
You are so right, Julie Lifeskills411....now where do we see the pictures?  :-)
I'm not trying to be mean but just want to make a correction to Sara's of Raleigh, NC comment. I don't know if the picture was changed after she made the comment or not but the picture IS of Edison Chen.
That photo above IS a picture of Edison Chen, don't believe me? See his profile at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edison_Chen

Btw, these scandal are not really surprising, the HK entertainment industry is known for it's hidden and dirty smut, where starlets, controlled by triad (HK mafia) bosses have to sleep around to get record contracts.
What a shame.
I understand if he keep a few pics but 1300, thats sick n there might be an underage girl involved
People should not make ignorant comments. The picture above is in fact Edison Chen.  Please google his name and look up his pictures, bio and movies.  You'll see that this is Edison Chen.  People outside of Hong Kong would not understand the seriousness of this incident.  Many things are in question.  1. The nude pictures of his current girlfriend was taken apparently when she was sixteen and Edison Chen was already 22-23 years old.  2. Were the girls aware that he was taking these pictures. 3. One of the girls appears to be drunk, were they drugged or drunk?  4. Edison as a public figure and idol for children and teenagers, what example is he setting for them?  Gillian Chung one of the female celebrities involved is the spokesperson for "no sex before marriage" how would you feel if your children idolized this person?  It is clearly hypocrisy so are we allowing our children to follow their footsteps?  Bottom line is that these celebrities are public figures who has great influential power on younger people.  Even in the U.S. we have all observed how teenagers idolize celebrities and copy their actions.  How much longer are we going to allow this garbage to infect our next generations?
Although I've always found the knee-jerk reaction to cover up scandals scary, I don't want to simply dismiss the comments of "Julie Lifeskills411 from San Francisco" because there's an old-fashioned goodness behind them.  But I just want to point that this scandal is HUGE and part of the point here is that it was the freedom of the internet that has spread a story that apparently the newspapers/tabloids had originally taken a pass on...due to fears that it wouldn't be appreciated by organized crime elements in the HK showbiz world.  Even the Chinese government couldn't suppress these photo's and this scandal, although they certainly tried.

Good to see him come down. His attitude towards this entire thing just wrong, nothing to be proud of.
Shame on him
He will be dead by years end.  One of the pics was for a triad boss'sdaughter.
To the person below, um that is Edison Chen.....

I believe that the media should just leave them alone, geez find something else to talk!
hey!wake up if this hap'ns here w'y not there nothing wrong with that a little publicity does not hurts and  is very healthy
It may not be such a fuss if it happens to American celebrity (Paris etc).
However, in the context of semi-conservative society in Hong Kong, the scandal will definitely give a big blow to Edison career.
I just predict his entertainment prowess will surely heading to nil in 2008
I am agree with Julie. I believe that he is innocent too. It's not his fault to release the pictures.
OH WELL THIS ISNT THE FIRST TIME AND IT WONT BE THE LAST. THATS WHY PEOPLE SHOULD THINK BEFORE THEY DO BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHO MAY SEE IT...
well, he is nuts or maniac? cos he shouldnt snaps all those pics and videos with his sex partners, first of all he dont respect his partners. he is the one who screwed up their lives. they tooks drugs for that anyway...what a shamed.........
Who cares who other people have sex with?!
What is your obsession?  Join a gym or something.
Wow...grown people having consensual sex - how scandalous, how disgraceful, how immoral!
Would the sanctimonious sychophants like Frances and Julie Lifeskills think this was so terrible if it was photos of him doing something else perfectly normal that other adults do? Like driving a car or signing a cheque?

The only thing that was wrong or rather stupid, is that in this day and age it's just risky to take pictures or video of sex, because it can be leaked. And then you get moralising morons coming down on you.

Chen should take the same attitude to this that Jamie Fox did when sex photos of him were leaked (or almost leaked). As long as he wasn't having sex with a child or animal, what's the big deal?
First of all, what people do in their private lives should remain private. Second of all, if you are going to put something into print for the world to see, please spell the words correctly and make it sound sensible. If the world was not interested in what was going on with this young man then there would be no discussion about these photos or anything else that he does, am I right????? This type of publicity is exactly what these people are looking for!!! How else do you bring immediate notice to someones carrier and name except by smearing their name in the dirty little scandule that you so nosely have scrapped up while wallowing in the dirt with them. It is absolutely amazing how much time we all waste on this type of TRASH!!!!!
I hope I can see some good photos of Maggie Q. I think she is soooooo hot. Actually, his personal life should be private. We all have a sex life, and personal issues that are not intended to be seen by the public. Hence the term "private life". Good luck Chen.
If there were cameras in college dorm rooms around the nation everyone you know would be involed in a sex scandel!! I think that every one in the entire world could be accused of a "sex scandel" sometime in their lives!! Give the guy a break, he's probably already learned his lesson!! GOOD GRIEF!! Be involved in something productive instead of paying attention to trashy drive by media!!
These kinds of acts is the reason that society is falling down the same hole. We try to explain and ask for accepance of the act and the individual.  There should not be class differance between the rich and the poor for dirty deeds, a dirty deed is dirty and should be handle in the best way for society.
i think edison is sick in the head. keeping thousand plus pictures of these kind.
He did what he did ..and its everywhere...you know that saying "what you do in the dark will come to the light" and he got caught...I feel no pitty for him and all the ones who are like oh no poor him get over it ...thats the problem, CELEBS think they get a lil money and they can get away with stuff that us regular people can't...botttom line HE GOT CAUGHT!!!
Now hold on a minute, the picture WAS of Jay Chou when the article was first released. They corrected it after I put up that comment I expect. I know very well who Edison Chen is. The editor left a note at the end of the article if you realize. Just thought I had to clarify that because some were questioning that.

I don't think we are in any position to judge Edison, though I do not condone his actions. I just sincerely hope that the people who possess the images stop uploading them because it is very destructive to all of them involved.

I think it odd that noone seems to take responsibility for being their own good role models anymore. Your children should never need anything more than you to teach them what is right and wrong. I do understand that these people had public images to uphold, But I also understand that we are all human. I daresay you would all be surprised to find how many of us have engaged in similar behaviors, sometimes the ones who look the least guilty are the most. These people should be able to have personal lives just like all of us. From what little detail the story provides, nude pictures are very different from lewd and disgusting acts. Seems to me perhaps we all are assuming the very worst. I don't think it's fair that Chen may face exile in the entertainment business over a few racy pics, while we in America can't get rid of Paris Hilton because of one lame sex video.
"Editor's note: Thank you for your comments. This blog contained an incorrect photo of Edison Chen earlier, it has been removed."

For those of you chastising Sara for commenting on the picture, you should have read to the end of the story.
JOYCEANNE HONG:

INNOCENT OF WHAT?
Just like no one ever heard of Paris Hilton before her video leaked over the Internet, this guy is now known to millions more around the world. You can't buy this kind of publicity.
We are one messed up civilization.  Why, in the Lord's name, have we allowed celebrities to have any influence over our children? Role models?  Celebrities?  Sheesh!  Like as if they are better than anyone else?

How many celebrities, sports icons and others of their ilk must fall before we realize that they are just people, capable of the worst kinds of depravity, hypocrisy and self-immolation as are we all?

Everyone should do society a favor and quit using the Cult of Celebrity to find role models for our children.  Role models should come from examples set by parents and from REAL LIFE; not from film or television .  We have done a grave disservice to our our children by allowing the use of Celebrity and Talent, however great they may be, as incentive to perform or be successful.

Furthermore, we elevate these people on some kind of pedestal, believing in our hearts that they are righteous, good and moral people, and then we allow our children to idolize them.  This is counter-intuitive and inane.

When we find out they are just as weak, petty, greedy or as outrageously stupid as we are, we vilify them.  We hold them to some higher standing than we are willing to hold ourselves.  Therein lies the rub.

As a civilization, we have to stop looking outward for some ideal that is, very rarely, EVER there.  We need to turn our hearts and minds inward and teach our children that the HERO, the Role Model is our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

How about if we all started emulating Him instead of these so-called "idols?"

The pictures are sick and they should not be shown to anyone. I am not saying that this is Edison's fault. They are on the internet, anyone can view them and it is just not right.
EVERYONE ON THIS FORUM IS ADDING TO THE LUNACY OF THIS SUBJECT.  SUDDENLY YOU AWAKE TOMORROW AND ARE FAMOUS...DO YOU HAVE ANY SKELETONS IN YOUR CLOSET?  BEING A CELEBRITY DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE PERFECT. THE GENERAL PUBLIC HANGS ON EVERY JUICY STORY THEY SEE ADDING FUEL TO THE FLAMES OF THIS SITUATION.  DOES IT AFFECT YOUR LIFE IF A GUY IN A COUPLE OF MOVIES TOOK PICTURES OF HIMSELF HAVING SEXUAL ENCOUNTERS WITH OTHER PEOPLE?  LOOK IN THE MIRROR, PEOPLE, BEFORE BEING CRITICAL OF THIS TYPE OF SITUATION.
They're all adults (well, except that triad boss' daughter) so basically i don see a problem taking those pics. And, those gals KNEW these pics are taken as they were posing for it! I dont think Edison broadcasted the pics - he has nthg to gain by this. If they are stolen pics, why shd he bear all the responsibilities? The only wrong he did is, why dodge away from it?! Stand out man, be a man! Just say "Hell yeah, we took it, so what!" And, please, there are more important news in the world than this scandal. Get off the front page.
What a loser! He does all that and then saves 1300 disgusting pics on his laptop and ran away to Canada? He sure is my number 1 idol!
Oh for the love of ... !  What has happened to the world?  People drinking, taking pictures, doing drugs, sleeping around, all of these awful people doing these awful things and being celebrities no less!  Do you know what will happen to them at the end of the day?  No no, don't get your triumphant morals in a wad just yet.  They'll scream and cry and wonder aloud "Why did this happen to me?"  and at the end of the day they will be richer and more popular for it.  No publicity is bad publicity, and they all know it.  So what if Hong Kong is outraged, they can come to America and fit right in!!!
I pray that he knows that GOD sees everything he has done, is doing, will do and that he would live his life with that knowledge.  It is a shame that he is considered a roll model by so many young people.
Another life of fame............

down the drain.

However, this is all happening only by the media.  Everyone, Everywhere, has SOMETHING they want to remain private..........we are entitled to that.  Why does the media have to tear lives apart?
Oh Come on!!!  There are like, 5 billion Chinese citizens...  You mean to tell me that no one there is having sex?  Now it is a big scandel because an actor and a singer did.  Get over it - your mom and dad had sex.
i think he should be accountable for his actions i mean he has defiantly done this before and he will keep doing it becusae he doesnt think he will get caught. i would rather have him tell the truth to everyone and at least take responsiblity then just lie to everyone. and he is setting a very bad example for children and teens. HK is getting worse and we need to make sure the US does not become as bad as they have.
i would just want to add that any one engaged in sexual activity should make sure that they keep it private cause it the best part of life wen to ppl are together.................so they should becareful in the future.
This is ridiculous.  The whole world is like this.  It's just sex people.  Let them have it and go have your own.  Then maybe you won't have to make a big issue out of other people having sex.  There is nothing wrong with it.  Good Gracious...we would not be here without it.
you folks are a bunch of prudes.  If you are so anti-sex, get neutered or spayed and let the rest of us enjoy our lives.
I see this as a great opportunity and I hope we don't waste it.  Clearly there are those who enjoy exposing themselves.  But there is, I believe, a majority who do not wish to have their most intimate selves revealed in public.  The message these scandals send is caution - that there is an inherent risk of public exposure if you choose to engage in this behavior.  As a parent, I will drive this message home to my kids as many times as possible.  As a sidebar, why do people feel the urge to record their lives and the lives of those around them with such intensity?  I honestly believe it's because they lack imagination and this lack of imagination is part and parcel of the dumbing down of America - and apparently, China as well.
Mother always told me to NEVER let anyone take pics or videos that I wouldn't want other eyes to see. She was so right! Pornography has simply become out-of-hand and too accessible! Pray there were no children involved!!!!
He and all his so called "sex partners " have brought a huge disgrace to entire chinese community .......what a shameful act ?......all of them should know the consequences of such act before even taking the photos ......all of them have betrayed the trust given to them by their fans..........all of them have 'poisoned' the mind of the youngsters .........NO MORE FUTURE FOR THEM ALL........what a disgrace!!!!
I saw a bunch of these pictures and the girls in them were posing for the camera. So don't think the girls are so innocent here. However stupid it was for them to photograph themselves engaged in sex acts, the photos were obviously intended for personal viewing. So, he is just as much a victim here as his many female partners.
Regardless if that is Chen or not..this should should send a message to us about how easy it is to pull up pornography on the internet. Parents beware and talk to your children instead of waiting for it to happen. I beleive alot of celebrities are fake (and talk about R. Kelly) but at the same time, alot of stand-up people in our community live these same lives, but they are not in the lime light. You want to be a freak in the sheets, make sure its behind closed door at ALL TIMES.
