The Taliban: Kidnapping, Inc.

Malalai Ishaqzai was anxious to tell her story.

"The Taliban kidnapped my 21-year-old son Mustafa," she said. "They demanded a ransom of $200,000 or else they said they would kill him," she told NBC News. "Then they ordered me to give up my job."

Ishaqzai, 36, is the mother of seven and, as a member of the Afghan parliament, one of the few female politicians in this male-dominated society. She is a prominent figure and well-known in the Afghan capital.

Mustafa, after having survived being kidnapped by the Taliban, safely back at home with his mother, Malalai Ishaqzai, in Kabul.

News of the kidnapping recently surfaced and had become a hot conversation topic in Kabul.

NBC News went to visit Ishaqzai at her home in an upscale Kabul neighborhood. The family lives well, at least by Afghan standards. An antique red Bokhara carpet covered the entire length of the living room in their fourth-floor apartment.  It was bitter cold outside, but it had finally stopped snowing, and it was warm inside thanks to a gas heater.

A houseboy brought tea and Ishaqzai began to tell her story.

Horrific story
"One evening, my son, Mustafa, and his friend, Nek, decided to drive from our home in Kandahar back to Kabul – about a seven-hour drive," Ishaqzai said in a quiet voice as she recalled the story.

"Near the Liwanai Bazaar in Ghazni province, about half way to Kabul – at exactly the same place where the 23 South Korean missionaries were abducted last year – six men brandishing Kalashnikovs stopped their car, checked the license plates and asked which one was Mustafa. Then they wanted to know where I was," she said.

Mustafa had come into the room by now to join us and interrupted his mother. He was clean-shaven and dressed in Western clothes; he seemed to be still in shock.

"Some men, with their faces covered, were standing on the road and aimed a gun at my car," he said. "I had to stop."

"They checked my license plate numbers against a piece of paper which one of them was carrying. I heard one of them say, ‘The numbers match,’" Mustafa said. "They were looking specifically for me."

"‘I am Mustafa,’ I said. And then I asked them, ‘Who are you?’"

At this point Mustafa looked over at his mother, who began to cry.

"They slapped me twice on my face and said, ‘We are Taliban. Where is Malalai?’" he said, referring to his mother.

Big business
Kidnapping for ransom has become a big propaganda business for the Taliban and a seemingly sure road to easy money. The money raised from ransoms paid goes toward purchasing weapons and funding the insurgency.

Shortly after 23 South Koreans were kidnapped by Taliban militants as they traveled by bus from Kabul to Kandahar on July 19, the South Korean government entered into direct talks with the Taliban

More than six weeks after the kidnapping, a deal was reached in which the South Korean government reaffirmed a promise to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan by the end of the 2007. Seoul also said it would prevent South Korean Christian missionaries from working in the staunchly Islamic country, something it had already promised to do.

Some reports said that a ransom of $10 million was paid for the release of the group, but the South Korean government denies the charge and said no money changed hands to secure the hostages release.

The deal reached between the Taliban and the South Koreans was a big win for the Taliban. It gave the militant group the recognition and power it craves and increased their political legitimacy by showing they could negotiate successfully with a foreign government.

South Korea is not the only country accused of paying for the release of hostages. Germany, France and Italy have all reportedly paid huge sums to the Taliban to secure the release of prisoners.

No mercy
Ishaqzai was well aware that the Taliban show no restraint, and typically behead their captives when their demands are not met.

"I kept calling his phone," she said. "Finally someone picked up and told me my son had an accident and couldn't speak."

By now, Ishaqzai knew that something terrible had happened. She left Kabul and went back home to Kandahar, her ancestral home, in the southeast of the country. The city is also the home and the spiritual base of the Taliban. She begged local officials in Kandahar to intervene. But no one was able, or willing, to help her.

"Five days went by and finally I got a call from my son's phone," she said.

"‘I am Mullah Abdullah Jan Mansoor,’" Ishaqzai said the caller introduced himself. "‘I am the man who has kidnapped your son. If you want him and his friend back alive, you have to do as I tell you.’"

Ishaqzai knew she was speaking to the same person who had kidnapped the South Korean missionaries.

The Taliban demanded that all their people be freed from the government jails or else her son and his friend would die. Ishaqzai took the demands to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, but he refused to intervene. Karzai has come under intense criticism in the West for negotiating with the Taliban and bowing to their demands.

She then went to her tribal elders in Kandahar who contacted the Taliban and worked out a deal for the release of the boys.

"My tribal elders convinced them I could not pay such a huge amount and that it was very important for our tribe that I represent them in parliament," Ishaqzai said. "In the end, my brother paid $100,000, but only my son was released."

Mustafa's friend Nek was beheaded before his eyes.

"They made me watch them do it," Mustafa said, "I saw his blood and then I fainted. I miss my friend; it is all my fault that he is dead."

this shows what disgusting animals the Taliban are
Despicable.  What a bunch of animals.  Shame also on the governments that meet these ransom demands.  I know they're just trying to protect their own citizens, but at the cost of encouraging future kidnappings for ransom.
How is it that the these people who perpetrated these horrifying acts are human beings like us?  I just don't know what it takes to act like such animals.
I would like to know where is the outrage from so so-called Muslim moderates? There is outrage over a Quoran falling to the ground or a prisoner in Abu Grabe being led around by a leash. Where is the outrage over an innocent young man being be-headed for no other reason then he was in the wrong car at the wrong time?
I would like to know where is the outrage from Americans?  These were the people who sponsored the group that perpetrated 9-11 and yet we're not pursuing bin-Laden and we are so preoccupied with Iraq--who had nothing to do with 9-11--that we've allowed the Taliban not only to make a comeback but it appears that they have won.  I don't see how we are going to reverse it now.  Bush let it happen.  We let it happen.
As an Agnostic, I say so what is the big deal?  Like most religions, 99% are at peace with themselves and the rest of the world.  There are those who use religion, e.g., Judaism, Christianity, etc., for their personal gain (always in the name of their god of course)- the Taliban claim to be the true believers.  However, if you have read the Koran, you will see that this is one of the ways Muhammad got both followers and money tributes.  He in fact participated in some of the beheadings himself.  Once the Moslems conquered all of the Middle East, most of India, and as far West as Spain, and everyone else was paying them tribute then they became a religion of "peace" (how convenient); but so is Christianity.
Read Charlie Wilson's War -- don't watch the movie -- and you'll be amazed by the unspeakable atrocities these guys commit. We've known about it and turned a blind eye for decades.
These people are no different than organized crime in the US back in the 20's and 30's, and have the same lowness.  We should turn their land into a lake of glass.
I can't express my revulsion at such heinous and despicable crimes. It kind of makes it more amazing how we're losing ground against these fanatics! It's cause our policies are bankrupt. We indiscrimately bomb civilians, reconstruction is a joke, etc. If we sincerely helped those people, by truly making their lives better, the Taliban would be just a fringe group. Our half-baked, half-hearted policy is another casualty of the disastrous Iraq war.
These people, the Taliban- their religion is not their law, it is their excuse to be animals.  They use it to sully their humanity and excuse their barbaric existence.
I agree with Bruce - and add that until we make the Taliban shake in their pants - and we come after their women and children and parents - and don't worry about the ACLU etc - then we will not win.
I can never imagine to understand the desensitation that these people have gone through to make them animals.  But i hope that one day the shiites and sunni's realize they can both observe their similar yet different religious view points, while living peacefully with each other.  Or maybe all westerners should leave their areas and let them kill themselves off.
Its insanity to believe that a government exists...When a citizen asks for and is turned away by its president and tribal leaders to figure out what to do, a pack of dogs is more intelligent...This is what american lives are fighting for?...I think I need a drink...
I think moderate Muslims are in fear for their and their family's lives in these countries-gone-wild.  Don't ask, don't tell and hope you live long enough for things to change.

These are areas with mentalities still in the 7th century rather than the 21st.  Peoples that are so insecure of their own self-control that they require their women to be covered lest they not be able to control their lusts, peoples who are afraid cartoons will cause them to lapse into idolatry.  Peoples afraid of themselves and everything else in the world that they are ignorant of and unwilling to explore.
I have a message for the Taliban:

How can you expect any goverment or people to accept you as legimate when you twist the Quoran into your own political agenda and behead innocent civilians who won't--or cannot--pay your extortion demands? A Pox on any country that offers you or your brothers sanctuary, assistance or support. You are thugs that kill in Allahs name. My thinking is Allah will not be so happy when you finally do meet. May he find a special place in hell for such cowardly acts. God is Great! and ALL Praise be to Him...he is also merciful.
How come america, can get so mad at the japanese and give them the Atom bomb, wich finely ended the friction, but they dont do much against the sick country, that treats women so unbelievable,go drop an atom bomb in kandahar the Taliban stronghold, usa all talk ,no do.???Connie
USA -all talk ,NO do, get cracking,or stop talking, send Mr Spinzone man on tv or Hannity and Colmes they will take care of it all ,they are know alls Idiots,.send them to Afganistan.Thank u
This is not a war, a war is fought for many reasons some good some bad but they have a reason. This is madness. This is a struggle to resist change, to continue to make people live as ignorant and illiterate slaves to a bunch of small time Mullahs and tribal leaders. These small minded big fish in their tiny pond who live lives of luxury while the remainder of the tribe pay tribute and cow-tow in order to survive on the scraps these minor despots leave. Ignorance and superstition are great ways to control a people. And all of it done in the name of God. If there is a God, He is hiding his face some where in shame at what is done in His name. The unfortunate thing about it is we, The American people are partly responsible for it. Our Foreign Policy has been based on greed and an attitude of superiority to these people. Education, keeping our word, and making sure all the people of this world have clean water, food to eat and a place to sleep out of the elements is the only answer. And don't tell me we can't do it. One less $ 5.00 cup of Starbucks a week and a honest desire to see the whole world prosper is all it would take. Yelling SHAME-SHAME is not going to do a damn thing to bring about change. When you can go to bed at night with a full belly and sleep knowing a child is starving some where, that, is the Shame.
My heart really goes out to these people - and anyone who's come in contact with Taliban. How can you deal with animals like this? Negotiate? Reason? Debate ideology? Leave them alone and hope they don't bother you? These approaches have all been tried and failed. You can pay them - That works sometimes, but we know why that's a bad idea in the long run.

They've been brainwashed to only understand force. Thank you to our soldiers who are doing something about this (despite post #5 claiming that this is all Bush's fault).
Why is it okay for them to kill and behead 'infidels' with suicide bombers and and car bombs, but when someone takes out one of their own the same way (in ref: the newly deceased leader of Hezbollah) it's illegal?
And so shall they reap
This is why you don't negotiate, South Korea. The blood of the beheaded victims lies on your hands, and all of the people and governments who pay off these murderers. They will continue to do this until the people say, "That's enough. I'm not going to pay." Just like in Iraq, where people finally got fed up with Al-Qeada, the people of Afghanistan - from the top to the bottom - need to stand up to them. Either get them to agree to give up their claim to the government, or kill them all because the war will never be over to them. There is NO OTHER WAY.
Disgusting
Honor and revenge, welded to ignorance and religious fervor.  An alloy for the ages.  Let's get the **** out before we end up getting infected.
There may be one person who can get the attention of the Taliban, John McCain.
Nowadays they have tiny, implantable GPS chips.  Anyone who can pay ransom can afford these chips.  So I say we inplant them in as many people as possible,  and if they are kidnapped,  we send specialized soldiers or mercenaries to track them down, rescue them,  and kill as many kidnappers as possible in the process.

This should cut kidnappings waaay down, eh?
The first 3 comments referred to the kidnappers as "animals".  That’s an insult to animals.  I have never heard of any “animal” behaving with this type of malicious violence.  These murderers bear no resemblance to any animal I know of.  Only humans can behave in such horrendous ways.  They are monsterous humans. (though I hate to give “monsters” such a bad rap as well…)
"Doc" couldn't be more wrong. That type of attitude is why this crap goes on forever. We make it easy for these religious fanatics to point the finger of blame elsewhere. When are these nitwits going to understand that they'll be screaming for peace while someone saws off their childs head.  WAKE UP, these are animals and deserve to be killed. I think we should do everything we can to provoke them and smoke them out. The only feeling we should have for these barbarians is recoil. Enough is enough.
the muslim community doesn't need five dollars from each of us to get rid of poverty, it needs to get rid of the koran with its clerics and mullahs. ever really take time (alot) and read how vile muhammed became with time?  he is a sick, perverted, control freak.  wouldn't it be nice if everytime you did something wretched you could just change the laws that forbid what you did in the first place? well, sick man did. i am sick of hearing about the taliban and muslim rights, it makes me puke. doesn't it bother non-muslims that in their minds they have the right by god to enslave you, rape your women, rape your children, all in the name of god? wake up people, it is time to tell the muslims to go to hell and stay there.
Paying ranson = negotiating

USA does not negotiate w/terrorists
Hey "Doc" what about the starving and homless children in the US? Lets take care of our own children first before we care for other countries children.
Whoever is doing these terrible things are not Muslim and I don't even think I can call them human. They are despicable low-lives trying to make a quick buck. I hate that they go around claiming to be so religious, I hate that they are giving other Muslims a bad rep, I hate that the Afghani goverment is not doing more to stop this, I hate that the rest of the world doesn't care or doesn't know what to do either. I know that there is a place in hell for these people and that God is watching everyone and everything they do.
Animals do not engage in this barbaric behavior. Only man possesses this irrational reasoning to justify their actions. I don't believe punishment is the only answer, as this is a belief system that is steeped in cneturies of tradition.
This is classic terrorism. If Afghanistan is not held and secured it will be a base for the spreading of this ideology.

First through the Muslim world as moderate Muslims are bullied and murdered and then it will be exported to Europe, Southeast Asia and finally to North America.

Have no illusions about the far reaching agenda of Islamofascism. Their hatred of the West is a hatred of our entire way of life.
It is true that the taliban have not been burdened with our 21st century western civil sociality. The terror is a proven control method within a society that values the fearlessness, and resolute resistence to invasion of their culture.
The Bush administration might be considered foolhardy to think they could persevere in the russian backyard where the soviets could not. I know that george didn't actually serve in vietnam, but it behooves me to expect he learn its most obvious lesson(the french indochina). By the way, doesn't the Bush family have the franchise on the gas biproduct of the caspian sea oil field that is suppose ro exit afghanistan right through Kandahar? The taliban need merely let it all come to them. That, and a energy hungry west, and an energy hungrier asia will prevent us from closing the doors on the region and letting them settle thier cultural immaturity in isolation. And your civl sociality that finds beheading repulsive. It will prevent the west from abandoning all the people that must endure the taliban each day, as we ignored sbrnicka until too late, as we ignored the khmer rouge. And the taliban outrage cannot justify cultural genocide of the taliban tribal base anymore than we were quilty of a similar attempt in vietnam. The west might adopt that civil sociality in earnest by cleaning its oil money stained hands in afghanistan and pakistan and redrawing the borders of both. The formation of a numerous smaller states based on existing tribal regions may be the only method of sustained resistence to the taliban and other similar element in that region. Strong traditional tribal leadership is the only potential deterrent to taliban rule of the power vacuum. Those living in the chaos of pakistan might welcome relief. Give the people of the region the opportunity for self determination. The islamic revolution that erupted in Iran has been burning for 30 years and shows no sign of abatement. It will have to run its cycle naturally. How long do we want to wait for civil affairs in afghanistan and pakistan? Will you give one less automobile in the driveway, or one less room on the new house, or raking the leaves instead of blowing, or handwashing the dishes every night to help initiate the process to end beheading of ransom hostages?
Well said Doc Smith, and why are people who should've read this article blaming the atrocities of the Taliban on the Quran? The person they beheaded this time was a Muslim and no where in the article does it state that they would've let him go  if he proclaimed Allah as God.
animals are more civilized than the taliban...
This out to be  awarning to anyone who thinks you can be their friend.. And to the Senate who is lead by gutless men and women who have no spine. But they will look at this and just trod on with thier eyes and the rest of their head shoved up their asses.. afraid to speak out and planning the next surrender to the men in the Middle East who want our way of life destroyed..
Disgusting. Person to person, the most corrupt people on the planet. 90% of the world's herion, killing like animals and America thinks we can win their hearts and minds by throwing money at them. Balogna! A puppet president that charges one million USD per provincial governorship and has a hand in poppy production in all of southern Afghanistan. A group of terrorist kidnapping and killing and justifying it by God? A corrupt police force that attack convoys just to get Americans or other Internationals (who are there trying to help them) to pay them for security, Locals stealing and embezzeling money from foreign companies who are there to help. NO SIR, a people who are fundamentally corrupt and willing to steal, injure or kill people trying to help them and I am not talking about the taliban... DO NOT DESERVE FREEDOM OR ANY OF IT'S BENEFITS..And don't hold your breath waiting on the "moderate muslims" to condemn their actions..
Of course as Americans, we are responsible for everything that happens over there.  Before NATO took over, everything was much better.  Now that NATO has taken over, they hide in their camps... afraid that they might get hurt or upset someone.
stupid people who believe reprots like these are like cattle that are fed by same nonsense corp newspmedia gives u, God knows whos this woman and anyone can make up story like this to defame opposition its whats happening in u.s all the time.

i wouldnt be surprised to find out this is another of typical foxnews-cnn-msnbc nonsese they tell people, worthless of comment.
The atomic bombs should be dropped in Wazirstan and
Quieta in Pakistan. then the world will be in peace
and free of Taliban and Al-Qaida.
All the wars and problems that are going on right now is about greed, money, and power. Everybody in ths world wants to have a nice car to ride on, nice clothes and everything the Western world has to offer.
Before I get onto the article, I just want to make note of something:
Some posters have stated that we should either a) nuke the whole region, or b) go after the children, parents, and siblings of these gunmen. I'd like to remind them of one key thing: if the U.S did either of those things, it would prove that its people don't care about human life and it would prove the claims of the Taliban: that America is "the devil" and, rather than weakening the Taliban and lessening terrorist attacks, it would swell their ranks and probably trigger a massive explosion of attacks against the U.S.
Rule of thumb: don't lower yourself to your opponent's level if it involves killing civilians, it just gives them more support.

Also, where is the support from the "so-called 'moslem' moderates"? I would like those posters to ask the American Muslim soldiers in Iraq and Afganistan, and to ask the head Islamic clerics (who openly denounced the so-called "Jihad"). They'd get their answers then. Aside from them, the average Muslim will react just like any other American: by condemning it when they hear it, and then trying to move on with their lives.

As for the story, truly a tragedy, I look forward to the day when people don't have to suffer such brutality.
Pick a nice day, plan a large picnic, get alot of people together, find the Taliban and everybody sit down to a long afternoon of food and good jazz music in the sun. Heads will roll less.
