‘Wake up, it's snowing!’

"Wake up, it's snowing! Don't miss the view!" Those were my 13-year-old niece's words when she called me early this morning.

I felt pleasure and joy in her words, jumped out of my bed and ran to the window. It was much more beautiful than can be described; a scene I have not seen before in my lifetime in Baghdad.

My family used to call my niece Snow White because she has pale skin, very blue eyes, and dark hair – plus she was a fan of the cartoon. So today she was especially pleased, because for the first time she felt what the taste of snow was really like.

An Iraqi man and his child enjoy light snow fall in Baghdad on Friday.

Then one of my colleagues called and said, "It's snowing, dear." I answered, "Yes, it’s awesome."

We started our day at work on the balcony holding a hot cup of tea in one hand and stretching the other hand into the air to catch snowflakes. My colleagues and I were breathing in the cold air while chatting. In Baghdad, it rains, it hails, it storms, but it almost never snows.

I thanked God for granting Iraqis the chance to watch the snow falling and I prayed that God will bring peace, happiness, success, and love in each white pure piece of snow.

I have tears in my eyes reading this story.  People are the same: 'delighted' by snow (as I look at the pouring rain in New Jersey in January?). I pray for more miracles for US and Iraq and the world.
"I thanked God for granting Iraqis the chance to watch the snow falling and I prayed that God will bring peace, happiness, success, and love in each white pure piece of snow."

Having been over there 8 times in the past 4 1/2 years, I echo the authors prayer, especially the part about peace.
What a wonderful, miraculous sight this must have been for Iraquis and the soldiers currently serving in that area!  The streets were silent?  Perhaps Allah and God have joined together to bring a silence to the gunfire.  If all the factions in Baghdad were equally touched by the sight of snowfall, they may find more things to agree on than to disagree about.  There are few things as peaceful as the sound of snow falling or awakening in the morning to find you are surrounded by a coating of the fluffy white stuff.
Is it a lesson from God? Yes, it is. Cool it!!
It is really nice that Iraqis can experience this, and yet have a positive attitude of the future.
Iam so much happy for the people of Baghdad, At last only God have brought smile on thier faces.
I don't know why but this story really moved me.  I absolutely love snow and I can't imagine never having seen it! Enjoy your snow, even if it's just a little, and stay safe.
It was amazing to witness. It brought delight to soldiers and Iraqis alike. In one of the toughest places to live in the world something so small brought a smile to everyone. The snow flakes were about 1/2 inch to and inch where I was at and it has been years since I last saw snow. It made my day to say the least.
WOW! Absolutely beautiful to hear this! Praise the Lord to the Iraqis and for this to happen, definitely! Enjoy your snow, folks! :)
It brought tears to my eyes while I read the delight of the Irqui's joy over the once in a life time experience of pure white snow.  The Prayer "that God will bring peace, happiness, success, and love in each white pure piece of snow." gives me Great Hope!  Thank You for relating this touching event!
i wanna start by saying that i admire your courage, for i realize the danger that you put yourself and your family in, by being a journalist and being unbiased. i can only compare your joy of seeing snow, to the joy that myself would feel personally to be able to see the entire world living side by side as friends instead of enemies, not only across oceans or boarders, but between religions and races. i hope that when my children grow up to be my age that they will be able to read of articles by people like yourself and see that you do not have to hide your identity, and not have to turn on the television to scenes of suicide bombers, or tanks and bombs. May god be with you and your family and to the hope that someday we can find away to bury centuries of hate
In the midwestern United States, we associate the first snowfall with the holiday season and God's promise of peace for the world.  I pray that this is a sign from God of peace in the coming year for the people of Baghdad.  After all they have been through, they deserve many generations of peace, prosperity, and God's blessings.
I mean really,  did they fall asleep in the poppy fields.....my god people...weather is by god for all.
Where's Kilroy....we aren't in Kansas any more...the purity of my heart is as snow, where will it end. When Hell freezes over.  Still looking for the crumb I imagine.  2 thessalonians 3:15
Hell hath indeed frozen over!
This is absolutely beautiful...there are no other words...I am so moved...absolutely beautiful...
Well the Democrats said the "surge" will work after hell freezes over and snow falls in Bagdad! Suddenly Barack , Hill and John are not talking so much about the war. Things are going too well.
It's amazing how something as simple as snow can bring joy to so many. I remember the amazement that I felt the first time I saw it snow. The wonder has never really worn off. I still look up, smile wide, and stick out my toung for the tasteless snowflakes as they fall silently. For just a few moments, the people of Baghdad were united in the joy that snow offers. It warms my heart and brings tears to my eyes to think that something so simple can bring peace to a region torn apart by war, even if only for a moment.
This story brought tears to my eyes.  What a simple joy to experience!  I wish that for all.  A lot of comments about it being a sign from God.  Let's all believe that peace will come.
It was great to see snow here in Iraq. Every Iraqi I talked to today said they had never seen snow in their lives, and that they felt more at peace when the snow was falling than they have ever felt before.
That's the first time I've seen a picture of an Iraqi smiling, a grand thing indeed. The father holding his son with snow falling from the sky, truly miraculous. It's such a beautiful thing to see, I hope the people there and all over Iraq experience more days of joy like this starting with this day. God bless all. :)
Hebrews 2:16
Thanks to NBC for finally running a headline that shares some good news for that part of the world. Amen!
God laid a blessing across Bagdad this morning, no doubt about it. I do not like the snow, but it snowed here in my town one evening and the feeling that came with it was awsome. I know God sent this blessing to the Iraqi people as their plight has been long and hard. God wants them to know he is still there and watching over them. I truly believe this is a gift from Him to his children not to give up hope.
My son called this morning to tell us that it was snowing in Baquba, 35 miles north of Baghdad, and that after a 15-month deployment, his journey home would begin tomorrow. I remarked that if he and his fellow soldiers had ever thought they wouldn't get out of there till it was snowing in Hell...guess what?!? I wish they were all going to be on my boy's plane with him...
I'm so happy for you guys thanks God Alleluya!!
A Sign from God?   Definetly...i join in the prayer for peace for these poor people who have suffered for so long.  I pray that this event can unite and erase differences, reconcile and bring peace to this troubled place.
a sign..the first positive emotion to come out of Baghdad since the fall of Hussein...A sign from above of good things to come!
We all believe in One God, perhaps people from other countries call It a different name.  God Bless
Global warming...Next thing we'll start seeing is scorpions on the endagered species list.
I think it is a really good piece of work from god! I think we should all take in consideration for what he sent to our earth! May their be peace on Earth!
Haven,
't heard from my son in two weeks. but 2:00an this morning ,he called us mom it's snowing here. He called from Irag ,thank GOD for snow , but he's still freazzing . Never to late to send our troops hand and foot warmers. Thanks
If all it takes to find a peacefulthere..let us send some snow machines instead of guns and soldiers..I hope a snowball fight would be much more enjoyable.
Peace to all the soldiers and people of Iraq.
The snow not only touched the lives of the people of Iraq but us here at home as well It's funny how something so small can bring peace and joy I to believe that in every little snow flake was a touch of God's peace for all
Now that Hell has frozen over can my wife and son come home?
Does this put us closer to hell freezing over ?
Snow in Bagdad!?! Must be global warming... Where is Al Gore when you need him?
What blessings may come.
All hearts are aglow.
Peace in the streets
due to the falling of snow.

Put down all your weapons and
thank god for this day.
it is now a time
to be joyous and gay.

You've been granted a reprieve
from the blood in the streets
stop playing with bombs
and roll up your sleeves

Though we would like to take credit
we know who it was
that gave you this gift
of the cold fluffy fuzz.

This feeling of peace
to you he did give,
for you to enjoy
for as long as you live.

You were never our enemy.
but are you our friends?
Couldn't we just possibly
start over again?

Your devil is dead
And so are his sons
For this we are thank full,
And we know you are—tons.

We came from the west
to teach and to liberate,
others came from the east
that only preached hate.

If your fighting for Allah,
He just told you to chill.
SO BE NOW AT PEACE
ALL MEN OF GOOD WILL!
Damn global warming
BTW...Allah and the Christian God are one of the same, Islam and Christianity are both Abrahamic religions...but this is definitely a beautiful day for our troops and the Iraqis alike.
Wonderous miracle in a part of the world that needs them!  I pray that God will continue give the Iraqi people reason to hope, love and live.
Coincidence? I don't think so!
My son is in Baghdad, Iraq and I can just imagine what he felt and thought after waking up to the beautiful sight of snow.  Being from Northern Indiana and stationed in Iraq since July, I truly believe he felt comfort and peace experiencing this absolute miracle, after thinking that he would not see snow again until he returned back to the states.  I can't even imagine how the Iraqi people felt having never seen snow, and I pray every day for peace among the Iraqi's and the whole world! I believe all our prayers are being answered after seeing the joy in the faces of the Iraqi people that we never thought would happen anytime soon.  Happiness, compassion, and kindness can be contagious and be as beautiful as snow too!  God bless you all!
JUST A LITTLE TASTE OF HEAVEN IN TROUBLED TIMES.MAY GOD BLESS YOY ALL.
So much for global warming.
very interesting!!! have fun, folks!!!:)i hope there is some for the snowman...;)
Only God could know that snow would bring true joy and peace to the people of Baghdad and the world! Praise God, Praise Jesus!!!

What a wonderful gift from God!

Thanks so much for your poem.  It touched my heart, and I hope you don't mind but I shared it with all my friends and family.  Beautiful words wrapped in love, and caring.  What a gift!

I too have tears in my eyes reading about this.  It is truly a blessing that for one day, and for a short period of time - happinness is bestowed on the people (all nationalities) in Iraq - an area of our world that has seen too much disparity, trauma, and hate over the years and for far too long.  God works in mysterious ways and I am joyful that mother nature has put smiles on the faces of many.  I hope our prayers and messages from the USA reach those who have doubts on whether or not we care - we truly do and want to see everyone happy!  That is what life is supposed to be about - living happy with friends and family and helping each other get through!!
