Chance of a lifetime: seeing Led Zeppelin live

Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones. Four names that effortlessly roll off the tongue… Led Zeppelin broke up the year before I was even born, but as in the case of the Beatles, the Who, the Doors, (I could go on) the music keeps going. On Monday night those four names were reunited again for a benefit concert here in London – Jason Bonham filling in on the drums for his late father.

"Have you ever seen so many happy people in one place?" someone asked me as the show started at the O2 Arena in Greenwich. I look around at the sea of smiling fans – from middle-aged rockers to kids and grandparents, in everything from tie-dyed t-shirts to suits and ties. Everyone was standing and dancing – and that person’s comment stuck with me the whole night.

A reunion, one-off gig, limited tickets, what was there not to be happy about? People shelled out $250 for a regular ticket, not to mention the ones going for thousands online. (I was lucky enough to be there thanks to a press pass). Spending that kind of money to see a band? Let’s hope you’re happy!

All eyes glued  to the stage
As the crowd buzzed with anxious wonder and whispers of "What song will they play first?" – "Good Times, Bad Times" opened the show and not a dull moment ensued.

For two hours my eyes were glued to the stage.  I never thought I would see Jimmy Page play his guitar with a violin bow live. Hearing Robert Plant announce "Dazed and Confused," the crowd erupted. Soon after, all eyes were on Page as he stood on stage surrounded by green lasers bowing his guitar. Then, Page produced his double neck Gibson signaling "Stairway to Heaven." The opening of "Kashmir" sent the crowd wild yet again. Mobile phones were lifted in the air by people sharing the tunes with friends and reminding others who got tickets to the big gig. As the show closed with "Rock and Roll," I didn’t see one still body in the whole arena.

A chance of a lifetime? Certainly for me. The performance was billed as a one-off charity event held in memory of former Atlantic Records boss Ahmet Ertegun, who signed Led Zeppelin. But even before the start of the show people were questioning if this would be the start of something more for the band.

After seeing last night’s performance, I certainly hope that there is more to follow so that others can see the magic I witnessed. If it was such a spectacle to me, I can only imagine the feelings it evoked in the onlookers that had the opportunity to see them in their heyday.

LOVE LED ZEP. Grew up listening to them in the 70's and early early 80's. The thing about Led Zep is, the music is so dynamic. All the songs have a different sound. They have such a broad range. Nowadays, the new bands music always sounds the same from one song to the next. There is no originality. My 12 year old was in the car with me the other day, and we were listening to Led Zep, and he had to keep asking me if it was the same band after each song. He couldn't believe how each song sounded so different. Miss those days when music meant something. Led Zep and Pink Floyd are the best! LISTEN - XM RADIO - CHANEL 59 - LED ZEPPELIN - 24/7 - ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. Chanel 59 is dedicated only to Led Zeppelin. It's outstanding! Wish Led Zeppelin would come to NJ or NY. I would be first in line.
There has been no other band on this earth, with so much talent, drive, and force then Led Zeppelin.  John Paul Jones is the master of bass, along with his creativity in writing and other instuments, Plant has a vocal of great character and is great with his lyrics, Jason Bonham is a pure individual who has his own style as a drummer and is probably more focused than John ever was.  And then we have Jimmy Page....he is the master of songsmithing....he has created the most incredible riffs and his production of the energy that was created with Led Zep has never been duplicated.  If anyone has an issue or supports my comments, you are welcome to address them to cbessy61 at the hotmale. I am a musician as well and hope to have more material from the greatest band to listen to.  This is Blind-dog Gus signing off.......  Listen for Heavy Stone this February 2008....take care and God bless all of you!

We can all pray they tour. I was wondering this AM as I listened on the news to how good they were 12/10/07, if they want to share themselves with the world again. It is a fact, I am almost sure of, that many of their own children would like to see them perform in a day and age when it can be truly appreciated. With the audio and digital componenets of today they could build that, " Stairway to heaven," and peopel could go on it. It would be such an exploxive world event and if they wanted some feel extra good, they could donate some to of the mutiple millions of dollars profit to other charities.
I was 17 when Bonham died, but remember reading it as a small newsclip in our state paper. It only mattered a bit to some, but was a tragic blow to others. I felt almost the same way when Stevie Ray died, but the death of he whole band was difficult. I could never figure out why they had such better investment strategies for equity growth than other bands, who have to tour to maintain a lifestyle. I am saying they took care of their money and it has taken care of them. Let's hope that J,J,J, and R will have had a fire lit that will burn for a long time. I pray that they will feel like sharing with the world again.
Fantastic Band.Saw Them 3 Times When Tickets Were $5.50.Went To Many Concerts During The 70's But The Zeppelin Ones Were The Most Memorable.Hope At Least To Have An HBO Special On This One.
Yes, its been a long time since they rock and rolled. I hope I can see them here in States before they walk up the stairway to heaven. I have never seen them perform live, but I have been listening to them since I was a kid. I am 45 now with three kids. My youngest one is 8 and he knows all the songs. My 14 year old plays their tunes on the guitar and my 13 year old sings the lyrics. Their music truly spans generations.
Zep played like crap at the Philly Live Aid, as per their own admission.

I prefer The Who to Zep. Also Zep stole many songs and also lost in court to artist they stole from.
i saw zepplin in july of 1970 in winnipeg.it was an all day concert at winnipeg stadium.a major storm came in and they moved it over to the arena indoors and of course there were'nt enough seats for all the ticket holders and a riot ensued, but the show went on.zepplin closed it out. some of the other acts that day were iron butterfly, the youngbloods, ides of march ,and the collectors,a great canadian band from vancouver who became chilliwack, and are still around today.
Although I have never watched them live - I love their music.  I hope they tour and come to Malaysia, soon!

Naahh...they won't tour. Touring is a big drag. Yes, the Stones still enjoy it. But it's a way of life for them. It's not for Zeppelin. I missed them in 77 in Tampa (the riot). Would love to see them. But if not, I have 8 studio albums that never get old and dated, and I have so many memories.
The previously mentioned 1986 show was with Jason Bonham on drums.
SAW THEM AT THE 3 DAY SEATTLE FESTIVAL IN 69;  A WEEK OR SO AFTER WOODSTOCK. THEY WERE BILLED WITH A LOT OF NEW GROUPS, IE, SANTANA, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS SPEED PRESS, IKE AND TINA TURNER, CHARLES LLOYD, ETC. WE ACTUALLY BOOED THE DOORS OFF THE STAGE AS THEY WERE THE CLOSERS FOR THAT NIGHT. THEY WERE GREAT. THE 3 DAY AFFAIR COST $5.
Yeah, it's sooooo rad that Led Zeppelin have resurrected. My first and olny Led Zeppelin experience was in Munich Germany.  It was in fall of 1973.  The Sport Platz made them sound tinny, but the experience was worth.  European audiences are a lot more refined.  I found that to be true at many of the other music events I attended while stationed with the 3rd Infantry, Wurzburg, Germany.  As GIs we organized our own group and called ourselves, "Bozos Unlimited." Our strength in number allowed us to rent buses to attend not only Led Zeppelin, but Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, The Who, Ten Years After, and Deep Purple.  True Heavy Metal. Well maybe not The Grateful Dead.  They were in a class by themselves.  It was a good time to be alive.  It still is today.
Peace, Love, Hippie Stuff,
Wayward Bill
yeah they are great,  the best saw them in s.f. in 1969,  i wanted to learn to play  guitar lol still cant play  it  or stairway to heaven haha   so much for mucic lessons to sound like  them lol
Just hearing the mighty led zep. played a concert in
London is enough to get the heart racing, what an honer to be one of the lucky ones there, at $250 a ticket what a deal for the memory of a life time.
tommorow will be my 44th. birthday maybe they will tour again and I can get my birthday wish and see
them live.
TO BE FAIR I THINK $250 IS A GOOD PRICE TO SEE AND HEAR LEGENDS  PLAY TOGETHER AGAIN
got to see them in heidelberg, germany in 1980, one of the last 3 shown that bonham played, what memories as I was young and in the AF.
Seen as everyone is doing a "I saw them..." I guess I will throw in my two cents. I have been a Led Zeppelin fan since 1969, and when I discovered them they "changed my world and mind" (if you don't get that quote then you're not a Zeppelin fan). I became a Zep head and believe me, they didn't play Led Zeppelin on the radio when Zeppelin I came out ... it wasn't until Stairway became a hit they went back and "rediscovered" Led Zeppelin. Truthfully though, most radio stations only played Stairway and The Immigrant song. To know the other songs you had to have the albums. Anyway, I have been to 4 concerts of the ORIGINAL Led Zeppelin between 1969 and 1974 (Go Cow Palace!)I know every word to every song of Led Zeppelin ..... BTW did you know that XM satellite has a station that that's all they play? LED XM.
Dwight in Fergus Falls, I was at the same concert at the St Paul civic center April 14, 1977. Do you remember the ovation that was given to bring them back for their encore? 50,000 plus people stomping their feet, clapping their hands, bottle rockets, roman candles and little piles of paper burning in the aisles, the entire building shook and finally erupted when they came back for the 45 minute encore. I have been to dozens of concerts before and after and nothing has ever even come close to the spectacle and the magic that was captured on that night. Only the Led Zeppelin back on tour could replicate that night. I was 16 then and now I am 46 and I would pay dearly to see them once again to show the world what real music and ROCK & ROLL is all about. Hammer of the Gods!!!!
I saw Zepplin on the "Houses of the holy" tour in 1973 in Mobile Al. and it was a great show.We were a few minutes late and could hear them playing as we walked up to the building. It was sooo exciting! I can say by nights end things were a little foggy but that memory is still very vivid.I will never forget it....
The Jimmy Page/Robert Plant No Quarter Tour was in the mid 90's
I had A Chance To See them In 1973 or 1974 Here In boston Mass. but The Show Was Cancelled by then govener Dukakis. We Waited All night In The Old Boston Garden And Thjings Got Way Out Of Hand.People Just Distroide The Inside Of The Place. So It Was Canceled. We Missed History.
Roy .s born 1964 let me tell you i saw zep in the 90's and yes i thought thay where great and boy i would love to see them again its the kind of concert that will put chills in your body and you know thats when your at a good concert and i was smiling ear to ear boy i hope to see them again
Saw them half a dozen times in the 70's.
Best time at MSG in NY. Got in for $5 and ended up up front in front of Page all night. They will be back.
Money no object, a must see.
you know when zep first came out i kind of did not really feel their music, i was a hard and dyed stones fan, but over the years and thanks to my son aaron i respect and love their sound, their openings to songs are wonderfully classical and creative, glad that all the people who wanted to got to hear them and still hear them
my friends tried to talk me into going to cobo hall in detroit in 1974?? to see the zep but we didnt have tickets and it was sold out. they went anyway and were let in through a back door for 5 bucks and were right by the stage, i was at home
Very sad, to see a bunch of middle-age men trying to be young again. I guess that when all you have in life is rock and roll you end up with no real life at all!
For all of us who were unfortunates, we missed a piece if history reborn. I've been a long time Led-Head and feel that by missing this show, I missed a truly magickal/holy experiance. If the heavens shine down, hopefully we will be shaded by the overpassing Zepplin. I hope to see them tour.
led zeppelin and pink floyd tied as the greatest bands of all time.
Led Zepplin....WOW! The best ever!  Saw them 1st time in Indy at (the new) Market Square Arena in Indy, Jan 25th 1975.  Jean Dixon predicted the vibration from the music would collapse the dome roof on the arena. The music rocked like the crowd expected, but the roof held on. Outside...it snowed 5"during the concert. Saw them again at the Indy fairgrounds collaseum in '77. They'll always be the best.
LED ROCKS ALL DAY ON XM PEOPLE
Thanks for such a great blog, I got chills reading it :D Zepplin has always been my all-time favorite, but born in 69, I never got the chance to witness them live. I hope you are right, I would love to experience the "magic" just once <3
My brother had their albums when I was kid and passed them onto me.  Ever sinse, I have been a big fan.  Saw Plant and son Bonham play in Vegas at MGM around 92-93.  Small theatre, 4K.  Quite remarkable performance - everyone left happy.  I can only imagine what it would be like to see 3 of the original 4.
Saw them four times over my lifetime. From 67 to 75. Lived the music. Had an 8 track of III. Played it til it froze in the deck. Sold the car, kept the 8 track. I could hear Page remove his fingers from the guitar neck.
Saw the band at the Hampton Beach Casino on what I believe was their first US tour around 1970. Seeing the long line wrap around the building, I overheard one passing tourist ask another, whats with the large crowd, who's playing? The reply, I don't know, some guy named " Fred Zeppelin ".
Saw Zep open for The Who at Merriweather Post Pavillion in Maryland in 1968. It was their first tour
and "Good Times-Bad Times" had just hit the radio.
I've always felt Zep 1 was their strongest album.
What a show!!!! It was all so new to everybody.
"Communication Breakdown","Dazed and Confused"
"Your Time is Gonna Come" WOW!!!!
All I can say, SARATOGA SPRINGS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER in Saratoga, NY during the horse meet in July or August would be a fantasy come true for all fans. What a great place for a great show....am I dreaming? I hope not, that would make life complete!!
It was awesome to know that the band that paved the way for true rock is playing again. There are lots of people who have tried to copy their sound but no one has come close. I love Zep and have since I first heard them when listening to my older sisters albums.  They are truly unique, they have mega hit after mega hit and from listening to the audio from the concert they still can rock.  Anxious to see if they tour US, I will be there!
Saw them in 73`at the garden and 75`on Valentines day at nassau coloseum 14th row center. It did take a few songs for plant to warm up I don`t doubt he had some electrical help. Highlight was Since "I`ve been loving you"
I worked with Jason Bonham a few months back and filmed a few interviews and a concert for Foreigner. Check out the video at http://sbnhosting.com/foreigner

Jason is the man on drums! Congrats on the Led Zep show, looking forward to hearing about more events
In my youth I worshipped the Zep. The band was regarded as the best rock band of all time. Now some 32 years after graduating high school I still listen to this band. They played in Dallas in 1974 or 1975 and I did not get to see them. Now I travel a lot for business and I hope that I am in an area where they may be on tour. I don't care the cost of a ticket. It will be worth it. Keep on rockin.
I was holding a mail order ticket in 80 for the tour that never was and had to refund it. At my high school in Parma Ohio students were "Dazed And Confused", more than a few with tears in thier eyes the day we heard Bonham died. I saw the No Quartr tour in the 90s at what was then called the Gund arena, the magic was there. Lets hope they take this to the road...
It's about time!!!

Get the LED out!!!

Rock and roll will never die!!!!
Saw them at the old Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa in spring 1970, remembering that we were used to seeing 2 or 3 bands for maybe $5, but the Zep tix said "An evening with Led Zeppelin" and were $7, for one band!Afterward all agreed it was well worth it, they played two generous sets from Zep I and II, along with teasers from Zep III and some old Yardbirds stuff. Hope this new show makes it to DVD.
How many times have you wondered when this reunion was going to happen? With just about every surviving top band from the 60's and 70's touring, I'm thrilled that Zepplin decided to do this benefit. From Jimmy Page's reaction, it sounded like he was pretty psyched, so hopefully a U.S. tour and a concert DVD are in the works. Bring it on.....
Tie died hippies, suit and ties. Kids, parents, grand parents. All smiles. Dancing in the aisles. Any fights? Dont think so! Shots fired? Hell no! White, black, asian, all types of folks. Great music binding people together to share the joy. Rock-N-Roll can truly save the world!!
A good friend of mine owns one of Jimmy Page's custom Marshall amps from their first U.S. tour.  Only two were ever made and they are very distinctive looking: isosceles trapazoids, wide on top and narrow at the bottom.  He bought it for a song from someone who didn't know what they had.  It is his most treasured possession - I can't even imagine how much it is worth.

I do hope they tour the U.S.  I saw Plant live back in the late 80's and half the show was Zeppelin songs - great show.
I seen them in Oakland, CA 1977.  To this day the best concert I've ever seen.  I'm 51 years old and I have tatoo'd on my back the four symbols across my sholders with the Swan Song emblem underneath those and the 'blimp' underneath that, along with the man on the mountain on my left arm.  It goes without saying I'm hoping for a chance to see them one more time.
