Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

With her white veil, bejeweled blouses, flawless English and flair for drama and theatrical timing, Benazir Bhutto has painted herself as lady liberty, a lone woman willing to risk all and stand up to Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and his emergency rule.

Bhutto says she is the one who can stop Musharraf and his crackdown, which has seen several thousand lawyers, students and political activists arrested. Already, observers are comparing the situation in Pakistan to September's uprising in Myanmar, where monks and opposition leader (and Nobel Peace Prize-winner) Aung San Suu Kyi rallied against the military junta.

But Pakistan is not Myanmar, and Bhutto is no Aung San Suu Kyi.

VIDEO: Bhutto's other side

Bhutto is a flawed hero. She has been accused – she says for political reasons – of massive corruption while serving twice as prime minister, first in the late 1980s and later in the mid-1990s. Bhutto stands accused of stealing roughly $1.5 billion, mostly in the form of kickbacks on government contracts.

Common interests
Bhutto and Musharraf also have a common interest in keeping the courts here weak. Despite her rhetoric against the Pakistani president, it was Musharraf who helped to have Bhutto's corruption charges put on hold when he allowed her to return to Pakistan from exile last month.

While the Harvard- and Oxford-educated Bhutto is the leading opposition politician in Pakistan, she is still more popular in the West than at home. Bhutto’s regime is remembered for having one of the worst human rights records in Pakistan's history, and her government did not allow the media freedoms she criticizes Musharraf for crushing.

Bhutto could also still face corruption cases in Britain, Spain and Switzerland.

Today, the New York Times let some of the air out of the Bhutto bubble in an article headlined "Bhutto's Persona Raises Distrust, as Well as Hope."

"But her record in power, and the dance of veils she has deftly performed since her return – one moment standing up to General Musharraf, then next seeming to accommodate him, and never quite revealing her actual intentions – has stirred as much distrust as hope among Pakistanis," the Times piece said.

Bitter rivalry for power
Musharraf is certainly no angel. On Sunday, he gave what can only be described as a bizarre rationale for his emergency rule. In a press conference at his palatial office, Musharraf said the emergency law – which prevents public rallies and makes insulting the president a crime – actually helps democracy. Without it, Musharraf said, terrorists, rogue judges and "agitators" would destroy Pakistan's democracy.

When pressed by foreign reporters – many local journalists boycotted the press conference – Musharraf said, "It is the emergency rule which reinforces the hands to control all this and keep it in check. And I think it is quite the opposite that you are saying, it will ensure absolutely fair and transparent elections."

Musharraf’s argument was weak, but he had to speak. For the last week, Musharraf has seen Bhutto stealing all the limelight, while he is under intensifying international criticism.

The truth seems to be that there are no good guys here, but only a bitter rivalry over power.

Bhutto is nothing but a corrupt, manipulative tested and failed politician. She plays the "modern card " with the west. But is only has her self interst at hand. In her last two so called democratic govt. she lead country only downhill. She is not a Harvard grad for the record, god knows why is that impression out there. She just attended a semester!! Musharaf is NOT corrupt. he has improved our economy and is the only guy who can cintinue to improve Pakistan's situation globally
Regarding Benazir:  I get bilked the first time, shame on you.  Bilked the second time, shame on me.  We're now on the the third time. Duh. Aren't there any pro-democracy candidates with military experience among the judges and lawyers?
Education would be beneficial to the people of Pakistan, and maybe we could redirect some of our money to fund schools. Not saying it would help everyone, but it could possilby get through to a few and they could become a true honest leader instead of a follower.
Please, let us face it. American aid to Pakistan is a military aid to protect its  interest in the region. Do we really care who is incharge of the country as long as they serve our interest. Many countries around the world have dictators, who neglect human rights, torture their own people, loot the economy of the country, but we are not maintaining a presence there because it doesn't serve or affect our interest. America had a vested interest to keep the Russian's out in Afghanistan, thus creating Al-Qaida, and now to fight the demon it helped create in the first place, it gave Musharraf billions of dollars in aid, so please, remember that it is our policies that have created a mess in that region, unstabilized the whole area, created thousands, if not millions of refugees, orphans and widow and most importantly instead of bringing the rhetoric of democracy and freedom that we peddled along with the "USAID", we have instilled a deep mistrust of all things American....Benazir and Musharraf are playing to the piper's music, and of course all these things will come back to haunt us, and our future generations for years to come. I think we have to see how our actions have not made this world a safer or better  place, how we haven't succeeded in bringing the world together, and how even billions of dollars in aid will not work, if there is no well thought out policy behind it and long term diplomacy/emergency preparedness to deal with, when things take a turn for the worse, or if the policy fails..For those of us who have experienced war first hand, have seen things blow up in our face, have heard the sirens and ran for cover, have prayed to God to send  someone who will please stop this carnage, where are all the people of the world who are watching this and not demanding to have it stopped, (not the TV war that most Americans see,  where we can turn the TV off when we can't bear to watch it anymore and then go to bed), know that War is not a solution, it breeds hatred, resentment , anger, and many other strong negative feelings and it will create whole new generations who won't know how to resolve issues in a peaceful way, ever!
Remember when  we point one finger at someone else, three fingers point right back at us. Try it! Just hold your hand in front of you and point your index finger at someone, three of your own fingers point right back at you. It is a simple idea...Richard Engel, I applaud you for being objective and always reporting the facts without coloring it with your opinions. I have watched you cover the war from the very beginning and admire your courage and objectivity in bringing both sides of the picture to the forefront. Unfortunately in this day and age truth is hard to swallow... and very few people will accept it, especially those who govern!

We are lucky that we as a people in this country can make a difference (look at what the people of Pakistan have to go through to be heard), it is good to be able to blog and voice our opinions, but it would be so much better if we all go out and vote and bring about the changes we truly believe in. Let us call our leaders to accountability if they don't deliver. Americans are a good people, so let us show the world we can make an effort to right our wrongs, and we will do everything in our power to rectify our mistakes! Every American, who reads this...PLEASE go out and VOTE! we know that we can make a difference! And WE WILL!
It's too late to do anything except watch...
With all the extremist and religous fanatics out there....The weak, if not nonexistant governments...The poverty stricken vs the rich...The black vs the white..Terrorists vs everyone.....

Someone will be detinatimg a nuclear bomb soon...
These peaple in the Middle East, Africa, and the Far East are not stable and/or intelligent enough to have control of weapons of any kind, let alone nuclear.....

Too Late We(civilized people) LOSE !!!!!   Lunatics WIN  ????
I don't see this country as a Democratic country in any form.
1.It has a long history of Dictatorship(Seezing the democratic government many times)
2.Santuary of World Terrorist/Organisations
3.Comparing to IRAQ and Afganistan,Pakistan seems to be more dangerous country in earth.

Sadly, while it is difficult to trust the media's take on any of these events, I do know a Pakistani who has expressed the same sentiment as this article: Between Bhutto and Musharraf there is no "good guy", only a corrupt struggle for power.

Hopefully a respectable leader is raised up in Pakistan.  Lord knows they need one.
I believe Hasan Ansari, Atlanta, nailed it with his view of Bhutto posted November 12, 2007 at 9:45am. His assertions being correct, Bhutto may even hand over Pakistan's nuclear arsenal to Al Qaeda and company to assist Iran and Russia against India and the West?  Who knew?  Wake-up Washington--and make that leash about one nanometer in length.
"In fact even the nuclear scientists in Pakistan have given the secrets to our enemies in the past. Its time the west realize the mistake and Bomb Pakistan once and for all, make sure all the nuclear sites are bombed so that in future we won’t have any more Mr. Khan’s  giving the nuclear secrets to other countries."

This was written by John Doe from New York who suggests that U.S. bombs Pakistan. Then he says "For the Pakistanis I wish them well and hope that the sooner they got rid of the generals and the ISI it will be better for them."

Is this guy for real? After bombing them to oblivion, he wishes them well and suggests that the Pakistanis grow wheat and feed the people! Well, John Doe, it is easy for you to sit in NYC and give instructions to  people of Pakistan what and what not to do.If you want to be of any use to U.S or Pakistan, you better take the next flight to Islamabad and join Richard Engel and find out what the good Pakistanis want. You may even find out that they know how to grow wheat, rice, etc and feed themselves. BTW, their economy is growing healthily for the past 8 years.
They are both corrupt! There will never be a democracy in Pakistan. They dont want it that way.The world should worry about there Nuclear Arsenal!Musharraf says they are fighting the terrorists,I beg to differ!.They know where Bin Laden is but they dont want him.I would say Musharraf is taking orders from Bin Laden from his own basement, that is where I would look if I were looking for Bin Laden. The world needs to disarm Pakistan. They just might be friends with Iran and Syria!
BE CAREFUL OF PAKISTAN'S 'MS. LIBERTY'
vs. what? Pakistan's Mr. "We'll get rid of them some time in the future" Emergency Powers, (re martial law). Busharraf, Musharraf, Cheney, Bhutto. All dogs and all with fleas. The first thing I thought when I read that headline was, "It's time to start ginning up the spinning for Pervez". These aren't choices. Four jokers buried in baggage. Humanity really should be able to do better than this.
Seems as if its the same throughout the world ---the corrupt politicians control and are not held accountable to the law--but then so many judges andlawyers here and there are such politcal whores one can understand what is happening--not good but explainable. Time for the really law abiding good people to take charege.
"The only honest politician in Pakistan is Imran Khan, but nobody would vote for him or back him because of true anti-corruption stance."

Shaam, you are right about Imran Khan, the famous cricket player. However, don't bet on his NOT being elected. The best thing Musharraf can (and will) do right now is to call for elections and invite people like Imran Khan to be candidates. Imran can easily neutralize Bhutto and Nawas
It is good to see someone finally telling the truth about Madam Bhutto. I think that most Americans would think she is some kind of a saint from the news reports we have seen on television here. She and her husband looted the country but good when she was in charge.
This conjecture about Bhutto and Musharraf is merely for media people and idiots. But wait, I repeat myself. It doesn't matter in the slightest about Bhutto or Muaharraf since neither of them has a chance of ending up as the leader of Pakistan. It is inevitable that within a few years Pakistan will become another Islamic Republic. The sooner the United States drops its support of right wing thieves and crooks and abandons its policy of making the world safe for Democracy by imposing Democracy on everybody at the point of a gun, the less trouble we shall have with the new Islamic rulers of Pakistan. And with other Islamic states. We have got to stop antagonizing nations who have legitimate Islamic governments, trying to overthrow those governments and replace them with one more favorable to us and seek some accomodation with them. It won't be easy because we have made so many mistakes regarding Islam and the Middle East in the last few years that even the lowest farmer or herder knows and hates the United States. We shall never, ever have an Islamic state that is favorable to us, but until we stop threatening them with our outdated, inneffective, laighable and obscenely expensive military we shall have no chance at even an accomodation.

The Islamic state is the way of the future in the Middle East, Africa and Asia and even someone as eminently intelligent and successful as George W. Bush cannot wish that fact away.

It is not necessary that these states be bent upon the destruction of the United States, as their people don't have enough time to bother with that nonsense and their leaders will follow their people if we try to work with them. But as long as we try to keep them down and not allow them the same national status as Western nations, they shall become more and more contemptible of us and, while I believe that the United States would start a war much sooner than any Islamic state, none of them seperately have the capability of harming us. They're smarter than us in their undrstanding of human nature and what constitutes a real threat and what a political threat. We have time to work with them because Iran is the only true Islamic state at this time with Syria, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iraq and Malaysia to follow shortly. Ease up on the Iran rhetoric, quit the threats and seek accomodation. It is never, ever too late to talk. It might work, but of course it will have to wait for a new President to replace the malevolent, confrontational, incompetent we have now.
Sounds like the way our "ELECTED"? government is headed.
These people seem to stand for nothing. If all they do is spew hot air...wait, that sounds like our own politicians. Maybe our journalists could serve us better by applying this same sort of criticism and skepticism to our own politicians. Quite frankly, if the leading contenders for the U.S. presidency are Giuliani and Clinton, then the American media is severely uneducated and misinformed. Therefore, they spread the misinformation to the U.S. populace, which is probably why Obama is slipping in the polls. He is so smart that half the things he says fly right over the heads of the media, they'd rather focus on the fact that he's black and has a funny name. The mega media machine running this nation is simply a monopoly of deceit and corruption. The only way this country will become truly democratic is if there is a full scale revolt by the people. Until then, they will continue to be ran by giant corporations who will help to elect whichever candidate will make their executives richer. This country has never been less free. We vote, and yet our votes aren't even counted. Instead it all comes down to the electoral college, a system that most Americans are barely aware even exists. Freedom would be a President who is elected solely on the tally of the peoples vote. No special interests whatsoever.
With the current situation of Pakistan and the constant media hype over the emergency rule and media banning, I have noticed one thing that most Pakistani channels are airing support to corrupt leaders like Bhutto & Sharif! It is evident that they have there puppeteers doing quite a job for them. Pakistan needs to sort out major issues such as Security & Poverty! Every nation has the right to democracy but then they are some nations which are just better of under dictatorship! As a matter of fact not one sensible person wants to step into the political scenario and try his hands on leadership because they know that people are happy with evil prime ministers & presidents! Thanks to the Gen.Zia Ul Haq times, we have been pumped with enough Islamic extremist..that if not for Gen.Mush. we would be the next Afghanistan!
Richard! Who might be more careful of Pakistan's "Ms Liberty"? Should it be the Pakistan government under Musharraf, who in 8 years subverted the constitution twice, sacked the judiciary twice, muzzled the media at whim, and who, despite floundering many billions on accusations of "$1.5 billion graft", couldn't prove a single case against her either at home or abroad? Or should it be the US government under President Bush, who has taken almost two terms to understand and say that Musharraf "can't be the president and the head of military at the same time"? These paradoxes apart, if the two gentlemen are now apparently willing to play ball with the lady, they need to be duly careful as she knows the craft of politics better than many. If her "persona raises distrust as well as hope" it is because she is neither a Shaukat Aziz nor a neo-con, and she may well have a very different recipe for running Pakistan as well as the "war on terror." If "Bhutto is a flawed hero" we know that history is replete with men and women who were unfairly accused by the people among whom they lived. The struggle and sacrifices of the Bhutto family in the cause of a democratic and egalitarian society are too recent to be easily forgotten by the people of Pakistan.
My female to female intuition (plus Ms. Bhutto's obvious displays of wealth) is screaming that she is just back to fatten her bank account further.

AND, I must admit scanning the previous writers here for Middle Eastern  names, and to read THEIR comments.  Moderate Muslims will hopefully be the ones to listen to, the ones to help us preseve and improve on what we in the West have come to know as a democracy.
Without the need for wars, there would be time, energy, money to do so much to help all, everywhere.
God, Allah, Buddha, etc. Bless the World
To paraphrase George Bernard Shaw, people get the leaders they deserve. Pakistanis elected both Bhutto and Sharif twice. Both of them turned out to be robbers of the highest degree who plundered the poor country for their own monetary gain. They did so while already filthy rich and knowing that an overwheming majority of the country's population could not afford to get enough food to fill their stomach. When in power, they curtailed civil liberties and freedom of the press. When Benazir was the Prime Minister, her thug husband Zardari had airconditioned stables for his horses at government expense. This, in a country where many poor people die every summer from heat. He robbed the country's meagre resources by awarding government contracts to those who paid a cut to him. He started out as Mr. 10% but progressed to a much higher percentage later. A dangerous and brutal criminal, he arranged murder of his own brother-in-law. The country became his  feudal state. All this happened with full knowledge and approval of Benazir. Sharif, a protege of the late dictator Zia ul Haq became so intoxicated with power that under the guise of Islam, he was in the process of introducing Sharia law to replace he judicial system before he was booted out. He was also in the process of having himself proclaimed as Imer Ul Momanin, meaning Ruler of Muslims, with absolute power and authority over everyone in the country. He  was not satisfied to be a democratically elected   prime minister of the country. Now he is talking about bringing democracy to the country. Both Benazir and Sharif are birds of the same flock: greedy, manipulative, selfish, corrupt, power hungry and immoral. When they talk of democracy, human rights, freedom of press and freedom of judiciary, they conveniently forget their own dismal record in all those areas. Hypocritical politicians and gullible public--that is the tragedy of Pakistan. In the mean time, people be damned. How sad. How very, very, sad.
Benazir Bhutto,Mush and Bush... they are making fool the whole world in the name of terrorism, that is what all pakistanis think right now.
Only Pakistanis living under dictatorship know what it means to loose all your freedoms overnight...all because of lust for power of Generals . they are enjoying perks and priveleges unheard of even in the developed world. They are playing suckers to a great nation. Under the circumstances Bhutto is the only ray of hope!!!!!!
Wonder! there's no one than Bhutto, Sharif & Parvez in PAK. Hellow Guys just wake-up and thrash these politicians. Why not someone from young generation come forward to cater what Pakistanis dream ..
After all these years she is back with Washington backing and like Musharraf serves the same master. She has been brought forward to deliver what Musharraf could not; that is, US (Israel) control over Pakistan Nuclear Assets. Despite the fact that Nawaz Sharif was equally corrupt and popular, US would not want him back or even participate in the so called democratic process. To begin with, he is the one who ordered the Nuclear tests and unlike Musharraf and Benazir is less likely to crumble under US pressure. Its all about getting control of the Nuclear Assets and nothing else.
democracy don't even seem to work in the usa. you have the republicans openly trying to defend our country while the democrats try their best to undermine the hard work our military has done and cant handle the sucsess our soldeirs have earned with their blood sweat and tears. meanwhile you have democrat voters running down a blind ally. Oh yes i will vote for you even if you are a criminal. Oh yes i will vote for you even if you tax the tax payers so high they will have to go underground and not pay taxes at all. Oh yes i will give your country away to the illegals and make you pay for it. you worry about the world you best be worrying about your own world the one that the democrats want you to pay a rediculously high price for. One that will crush our ecomnomy. Leave them alone they need a millitary rule there. put our money back into our economy and for the love of god close the damn boarders!
With Bhutto and Masharrif, you have a dozen in one hand and 12 in the other. I do expect, though not wissfully, that Bhutto soon will be killed.
Benazir is the MOST corrupt, selfish and self-serving politician we have had. She almost drove the country to disaster in her two stints, and I should know as a Pakistani living under her nightmarish tenure. I hope the West will now see her for what she truly is - another Ferdinand Marcos!
Stop feeding them money and just turn it all into glass these people after all have been killing eachother since their existance that is just never going to change they just can not live side by side in peace. We got our own problems like closing our boarders and keeping the trash out!
As a woman who wanted to be a journalist more than anything, but decided no due to the fact that I felt there was no more integrity left in the field (this was 20 years ago), I find it amazing that after reading this article and reading the comments, American citizens are SO quick to bash anything and everyone, including our President, without first reading and getting the facts as clearly as they can.

I do agree that we should not give to anyone before we give to our own.  It seems, with the exception of the British, that other countries do not give to us to care for hurricane and flooding, and they do not "repay" US for the things we give, whether we feel it necessary or not.  History repeats itself-when people have had enough they rise up-look at the Zulus, the Boston Tea Party, the countless people who finally rose up with rocks and sticks against guns and arrows.

However, I do not agree with the media.  We can say what we want about other countries limiting their people to "need to know news".  This article was much more informative that the one that made the front page of the desktop-I had to scroll through the other article to get to this tiny link.  Democracy is not democracy unless it is free and clear.  However, the President, regardless of who he is, should never be bashed or questioned in times like this.  Peaceful protests make people pay more attention to a cause than someone screaming.  Screamers only look like zealots.

Benazir will RUIN Pakistan and its economy (especially her husband Mr.10%),Maybe thats what the likes of Bush and others with their hidden agenda want. Who better to help come to power, the person most likely to ruin the country i.e BENAZIR and MR 10 %. Bush is smarter than I thought(or should that be his advisers are),cant be Bush, can it?? Keep Benazir and her FAKE democracy away from Pakistan. The people of Pakistan have suffered enough corruption. The best person for the job is IMRAN KHAN.
We sincerely owe a debt of gratitude to George, Tom, Ben, John and the gang....do we not?  And the brave young men and women who have fought and died to protect our constitution and the honorable American's who continually strive to form a more perfect union and protect our domestic tranquility.

God Bless America!!
Corruption, dishonesty, opportunism? Are we talking a Clinton-Bhutto ticket in '08?
Bhutto used to claim that she was the mother of Taliban
And on nuclear energy for Iran.  Funny how Muslims are willing to use infidel science when convenient.
This debate highlights perhaps the most complex issue the US and the West in general will face in the comming months and years.  Namely, what if the "will of the people" freely expressed in elections happens to select a government driven by "people we don't like" or a philosophy we feel is a threat (i.e., a radical Islamic theocracy)?  Then what do we do?  How will we react?  When we push for "democracy" everywhere in the world, what we really mean is "democracy" the way we see it.  We aren't preparred for "democracy" which might elect a government we can't or won't deal with.  As the old expression rightly notes, "watch what you wish for, you just might get it".
Having visited Pakistan for 3 weeks in October 2003 I can tell you that the nations human rights policies only effect Muslims. The minorities don't stand a chance (Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, Catholics, etc.)Pakistan needs leadership that will embrace different religions besides Islam, and give minorities a hope in Pakistan society. All men are created equal. I am personally believing Pakistan will be a great nation with great leadership. I'm praying thet the only true God who created the heavens and the earth will bring Pakistan to the place He wants them.
The lesser of two evils? i would certainly say so. Musharraf isn't a total democratic picture, but this woman obviously knows what sells in the news. Don't forget the kickbacks that her & hubby got to line their pockets & destroy pakistan's ecomomy. AND- yes, folks- we now have another place for extremist muslims to practice hate. Just what the world needs.
It's a replay of the 1979 Iranian Revolution, with Musharraf as the Shah, Bhutto as Shapour Bakhtiar, and Osama bin Laden as the Ayatollah Khomeini.

We already know the result of supporting Bakhitar against both the Shah and Khomeini: the Shah fell, but Bakhitar was no match for Khomeini's ruthlessness and charisma, and was forced to flee for his life and leave Iran to Khomeini's gentle graces.

We might want to try supporting the Shah this time around. At least Musharraf is ruthless enough to figh back against Al-Qaeda, instead of assuming ineffective international protests will stop bin Laden from taking over.
It's amazing to think that this could very well be the future of the West. We have so much corruption, scandal and secrecy here that we can hardly criticize what is happening in the Middle East, especially when it's the West that caused much of the dissension in the first place. In years past, the US sent money, arms and officials to most of the Middle Eastern countries, at one time or another, in a ploy to cause destabilization to most of these regions, it’s fitting that what goes around comes around isn’t it?
Alas Might is right - Democracy and vote these don't change much - but ought to be given a true chance. Change is brought about by the will of the people and new true leaders shall emerge from no where - you wait and see. The General and the old politicians are afraid of the new generation who shall rule peacefully and honestly whatever the system - military, democratic or islamic PLEASE let the people have their SAY!
How does it really matter? Pakistan is a failed state, a haven for international terrorists, a breeding ground for Islamic fundamentalists, a proliferator of nuclear weapons technology that it sold to the highest bidders and a general vermin to its neighbors. We support the current dictator because it is convenient to us. Bhutto, Nawaz Sharif  or Musharraf will be the mere titular head of an out of control organization called the ISI (Inter Services Intelligence) aka "Shadow Government" which sponsors fanatic groups like the Taliban in its futile and misguided quest of Islamic supremacy and re-establishment of the caliphate. While Richard might have gotten his story theme from the RNC to try play Butto down in the run-up to US elections where the Reds don't want to be viewed as supporters of despotic dictators - the fact is that it does not matter who sits on Pakistan's throne. It is the most dangerous country today, bursting at the seems with Islamic terrorists awaiting to get their hands on hand-me-down Chinese nuclear warheads.

Let there be PEACE! on our blue planet now and forever.
Now Benazir wants to team up with Shariff...the two most corrupt leaders of Pakistan. If that happens, Pakistan will fail to exist. We might not like Musharraf for his dictatorship, but lets face it, Pakistan has recently flourished under his rule...
Musharraf is Pakistan's best hope for prosperity and stability.  He is the ONLY leader with a proven track record - he has brought prosperity to the country, ushered us into the Information Age, and fought the import of extremism from across the border. He has transformed the lives of ordinary people for the better.  Our democratically-elected leaders have proven to be brazenly corrupt, better suited to starring in a musical farce called  "Goons & Buffoons" than aspiring to public office.

As matters stand, the problem is not whether Musharraf should stay or go. There is no question; he HAS to stay.  There is no other viable option - for Pakistan or the world community.  This is not to say he's perfect: he's made several mistakes (the biggest being his revival of the MQM, a party that spread a reign of terror and lawlessness through its violent urban network in Karachi in the 1990s) but his stand-off with the Supreme Court is not one of them.  The legal community has a long history of corruption. For them to claim any kind of moral highground and use it to justify behaving as a political party - as they had in recent months - was clearly an attempt to stage a new kind of coup and to add instability and uncertainty.

The real problem is we have no viable option other than Musharraf.  The ruling classes belong mostly to feudal families, like Benazir.  In election-time, voters in their consitituencies do exactly as they are told by their lords and masters. As long as feudalism exists, landlords continue to operate as absolute, Oxford-educated rulers in their lands, with the power of life, law and death. Democracy holds little meaning in such a context. The only other politicians with mass influence are the mullahs who exploit religion rather than land ownership as their power base.

Democracy can't happen till real social and economic reforms take place, which no 'democratically' elected leader has ever done. Musharraf has made dramatic inroads in many economic and social areas, including the free-est press in our history. If this is military dictatorship, I'm all for it.
Feel sorry for the people of pakistan. The country has been ruled by THUGS since its inception. Only thing their leaders do is to breed hatread towards west and India in order divert their people's attention from the real problems facing its citizens. It is APPALING to see Bush and Gullible west foster one HYPOCRATIC leader of this country after another. One must really contemplate a recent topic highlighted by Newsweeek, the most DANGEROUS COUNTRY in the world is NOT IRAQ but it is PAKISTAN. There cannot be an end to the misery of its suffering people...till the Citizens of Pakistan realize that they can only prosper by working towards academic and economic development instead of fostering hatred towards West and India.
Bhutto cannot be compared to Aung San Suu Kyi, Bhhutto is the most corrupt and foxiest politicians of Pakistan
She and her husband Mr. Zardari 10% known to Pakistanis looted, accumulated and ammassed the Wealth of the people of Pakistan, when convicted, fled the Country living lavishly in Dubai, Switzerland and England. Can Pakistanis be proud of Bhutto as their leader in comparison to San Suu Kyi, not all, Kyi is a true leader and fighter for democracy sacrificing her life for country under the force of the brutal Army Junta of Myanmar. What has the world done for her fight, can this be comparable to Bhutto. It is a shame to see how media plays in supporting Bhutto rather than San Suu Kyi.  Nawaz Sharif is another rouge, he benefitted by strengthening and fortifying his family and industrial wealth.Tried to get rid of the General who banished him out to Saudi on request of his Royal friends from Jordan and Saudi Arabia, where he is living in luxury in one of the royal palaces. Lastly don't forget the Judiciaries, they are no Angels, they are as corrupt as the leaders, all like to have their fingers in the pie.The comes the Mullas who under the banner of Islam want to take over and impose selfmade Shariat laws, bringing extremism, hate against the non Muslim World, depriving the rights of women folk etc.etc. With these elements can anyone think that Democracy can work in Pakistan, it is 60 years since Jinnah made this country thinking the Muslims of India will have a Democractic State, yet there is no sign of such a thing like Democracy. Why, because 70% of the people are illiterate who can be easily bought or brainwashed and made to accept. In the 30% literate ones, 5% of these are the rich Feudal Lords and Industrialists and their generations Like the Bhutto's,Sharief's Pagara's, Zardari's etc the most corrupt rule and safe guard and amass their wealth. The rest 25% of the literates end up as educators, army officers, lawmakers, etc of these 10% are again bought and guided by their paymasters. What can the remaining 15% do, if any one rises up they can be easily crushed. So what happens, the Army has to rule and keep the illeterate and the masters down with there iron fists, these then start crying out loud for democracy to the World. Until and unless education, honesty, integrity, with love and compassion  for a democractic Pakistan comes up, it is better that it is kept under control. I feel sorry I know because I have also belong to that unfortunate nation and had to exit out elsewhere where true democracy exists.
Lorainne CA, I agree with your view 100%, what you say is the real truth --- the more they get the greedier and corrupt they become..
USA needs to stop giving aid to corrupt Goverments and dictators.
A repeat of the 1979- 1980 American screw up in Iran?President Carters Idea of solving the Musslim uprising
in Iran, gave us the Ayatolas and insane leaders of today. The Shah of Iran,a strong supporter of the US,
tried to sqash the riots in Theran.President Carter
took sides with the Mob,and pressured the Shah to give
up his power to rule.Promising Asylum to the Shah, and then denying entry into the US.[What a stand up Guy]
We are facing the results today.I compare todays
Pakistan,with 1980 Iran.President Musharraf,also a
supporter of the US, keeper and protector of all the nuclear weapons, needs our full support. It seems to me,
President Bush, and some other missguided Polititions
supporting a corrupt former exiled Ms.Bhutta.[like
Mr.Khomeni,he also used to live in exile in Paris]We
dont seem to learn from our mistakes, not supporting our friends 100%.Imposing our kind of unwanted Democracy,on other Countries,I call stupidity.Like the
old saying goes"HISTORY REPEATS IT SELF"
