Be careful of Pakistan's 'Ms. Liberty'

With her white veil, bejeweled blouses, flawless English and flair for drama and theatrical timing, Benazir Bhutto has painted herself as lady liberty, a lone woman willing to risk all and stand up to Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and his emergency rule.

Bhutto says she is the one who can stop Musharraf and his crackdown, which has seen several thousand lawyers, students and political activists arrested. Already, observers are comparing the situation in Pakistan to September's uprising in Myanmar, where monks and opposition leader (and Nobel Peace Prize-winner) Aung San Suu Kyi rallied against the military junta.

But Pakistan is not Myanmar, and Bhutto is no Aung San Suu Kyi.

VIDEO: Bhutto's other side

Bhutto is a flawed hero. She has been accused – she says for political reasons – of massive corruption while serving twice as prime minister, first in the late 1980s and later in the mid-1990s. Bhutto stands accused of stealing roughly $1.5 billion, mostly in the form of kickbacks on government contracts.

Common interests
Bhutto and Musharraf also have a common interest in keeping the courts here weak. Despite her rhetoric against the Pakistani president, it was Musharraf who helped to have Bhutto's corruption charges put on hold when he allowed her to return to Pakistan from exile last month.

While the Harvard- and Oxford-educated Bhutto is the leading opposition politician in Pakistan, she is still more popular in the West than at home. Bhutto’s regime is remembered for having one of the worst human rights records in Pakistan's history, and her government did not allow the media freedoms she criticizes Musharraf for crushing.

Bhutto could also still face corruption cases in Britain, Spain and Switzerland.

Today, the New York Times let some of the air out of the Bhutto bubble in an article headlined "Bhutto's Persona Raises Distrust, as Well as Hope."

"But her record in power, and the dance of veils she has deftly performed since her return – one moment standing up to General Musharraf, then next seeming to accommodate him, and never quite revealing her actual intentions – has stirred as much distrust as hope among Pakistanis," the Times piece said.

Bitter rivalry for power
Musharraf is certainly no angel. On Sunday, he gave what can only be described as a bizarre rationale for his emergency rule. In a press conference at his palatial office, Musharraf said the emergency law – which prevents public rallies and makes insulting the president a crime – actually helps democracy. Without it, Musharraf said, terrorists, rogue judges and "agitators" would destroy Pakistan's democracy.

When pressed by foreign reporters – many local journalists boycotted the press conference – Musharraf said, "It is the emergency rule which reinforces the hands to control all this and keep it in check. And I think it is quite the opposite that you are saying, it will ensure absolutely fair and transparent elections."

Musharraf’s argument was weak, but he had to speak. For the last week, Musharraf has seen Bhutto stealing all the limelight, while he is under intensifying international criticism.

The truth seems to be that there are no good guys here, but only a bitter rivalry over power.

BENAZIR AND MUSHARRAF ARE BOTH CORRUPT AND ARE OUT OF TOUCH WITH PEOPLE OF PAKISTAN.BENAZIR IS AN OPPURTUNIST.SHE FLED WHENEVER THINGS GET TOUGH AND RETURN ONLY FOR POWER.HER HUSBAND IS A GOON.HE IS INVOLVED IN MURDERING AND KIDNAPPING PEOPLE FOR MONEY.LET PEOPLE DECIDE WHO THEY WANT FOR THEMSELVES AND PUT BENAZIR AND MUSHARRAF,CHAUDARY BROTHER IN JAIL.
From today's mainstream media it is, unfortunately, difficult to know what the truth really is.  Is it time to "bash" Bhutto because the US (or should I say Bush/Cheney) support Musharraf?  Has the corporate directive gone out to the media to downplay Bhutto's intentions, in an attempt to bolster Musharraf?  It is simply impossible to trust our media anymore.  Yet Richard Engel's report does give pause to investigate further.  Thanks for your report Richard, but until I check out further sources and references I am hesitant to believe anything coming from MSNBC, CBS, ABC, and of course there is very little to believe from FOX.
Great, No good guys and yet we keep sending them billions in aid, so who is the stupid ones in this scenario?  Maybe if we would shut down so much aid to foreign countries, we would have enough money here to help the homeless, poor, jobless and hungry.  It is shelling out all this financial aid that contributes to corruption, after all if the money wasn't there, it couldn't be embezzled.  Rich people rule the world and maybe, just maybe that is why we have all the corruption, wars and worries we have today.  Seems the more they get the greedier they get.
Pakistan, the bad, the worse, and the ugly. Unrestrained democracy in this country could be manna from Heaven for the Islamic hate mongers in a state with a nuclear arsenal.  Musareff is doing what he thinks he has to do to stay the course.  And Bhutto is the corrupt alternative.
Richard Engel's assessment of politcal turmoil is very true.Benazir Bhutto is not trying to save democracy but trying to save glimmer of hope that one day once again she would become prim minister. Musharraf's decisions are always based on expediency. He dropped all charges of corruption against her. In return, she is ready to eccept him as president. The true heroes of this struggle are judges of Supreme court who refused to  take oath under new presidential order.
Isnt it a shame? Three thousand years and the human races have not progressed beyond the barbaric T-Rex character. I listened while a man this week justified taxes on people as a way to maintain a civilized society. When I look around the world I see no civility. There is less Chaos in the outside universe than herer on this planet. We Americans are quick to calling names and critizing other nations but still we do little to quell all of this violence, We do one thing very well and that is We are experts  at controlling our own teenage population. Americans have seen war almost continously since the Revolution of 1776. My ancestors have participated in every war since the revolution and yet there is little to show for it except for a skyline full of skyscrapers and big wide and long highways. It is a continous war after war and the young teenagers are sacrificed for these wars political or entertainment and with no end in sight. If there was any comnon sense in this world most of the strife and violence could be ended very quickly, but what would the world do for action and entertainment? Civilized?????
Right now Bhutto is the lesser of two evils. The people of Pakistan have to first, re-establish democracy, and then choose their leader. Bhutto's leadership and her party, the PPK, is their best chance. Greg

The report you filed for Friday night's Nightly News was fascinating.  You should be more careful, though -no need to become part of the story by getting knocked around, but I guess you are more than used to it, after all your years working in the Middle East.  Jeez, the only time I've been shoved around like that was at a Ramones concert!  Take care.
The New York Times article was devastating to Bhutta. The US should not be supporting either Musharraf or Bhutta.Neither one of them wishs democracy for Pakistan andneither on eof them has any incentive to destroy the islamic terroists when they represent your meal ticket to billions of dollars in US aid.Would you get rid of Al QUAIDA when to do so would result in a reduction of funding and US support for free elections that would result in your ouster as prersident?Even a corrupt ,venal moron like Bush should be able to understand that Musharraf has no incentive to aggressively go after his meal ticket Al Quaida;his incentive is to make sure they surbvive and are a constant threat tot the US but not so much of a threat that the US tells Pakistan it is coming in with or with out his assistance.
Just exactly why havent the democratic candidates made this an issue?Dont they realize that a platform of cutting our ties to Saudi Arabia and moving our troops to Afghanistan for th epurpose of confronting Al qUAEDA in pakistan  if necessary would be an immensely popular position? Whichever candiate realizes the enormous hatred for these countries that resides in the majority of both democrats and republicans in this country will win the election.
Richard,
Thanks for the heads-up. I wondered about Bhutto's sincerity in presenting herself as a representative of the "people" when I saw her expensive jewel encrusted glasses with the double C....more representative of the wealthy social elite....hmmmmm
Please name a Great a leader who has served the interests of Pakistan. The people of Pakistan have been misled and bamboozled.  Corruption and feudalism has destroyed the country. Terrorism has devastated the common folk. Pakistan has the ability to become a great nation, hopefully the Judiciary gets the power to root out the necessary evils and pave the way to a true democracy.
Benazir and Nawaz Shariff are rogue and corrupt politicians. They care less about human rights than Gen. Musharaff. That is not to say that I in anyway support the General. At this point, The people of Pakistan and US Govt have to choose between the sea and the devil. If luck is on our side, we will survive this. People of Pakistan need to wake up and fight for real democracy and not for 100% corrupt rogue Benazir and Nawaz Shariff. They need somebody like Professor Muhammad Yunus  from Bangladesh. Good luck with their fight.
Richard got it correctly. Bhutto is no angel either. While reporting from Pakistan, Richard should investigate why Benazir´s dad Zulfikar was hanged by Gen.Zia who was the boss of Musharraf in 1979. Between Benazir and Mush, I prefer Mush. After all, he is getting the Pakistani economy growing at 8.5 % a year with the help of his well educated economist P.M. Hard working Pakistanis are no fools and they are unlikely to listen to demagogues like Benazir or Nawas.

One thing I appreciate about Prez.Mush is that when the shove came to push, he did not tuck his tail behind his hind legs and run away shirking away his responsibilities. A good leader.
Bhutto is as corrupt if not more. Her husband was known as 7% Zardari for all the kickbacks he demanded to approve Govt projects. If Musharaff goes  the new looters of US aid will be whoever next controls Pakistan. These politicians have no reason to catch bin Laden and turn off the spigot of $ they get for "fighting terror".
Benazir Bhutto is as crooked as they come! Coming from a landowner family, all her Harvard/Oxford education has really been for her own financial gains. In her two terms as the former Prime Minister the percentage of eduated Pakistanis remained at 2%-5%, in a population of about 160 million. She HAD TO leave the country because of corruption charges against her and her husand Asif Zardari, commonly known as MR. 10%! Both time she left the country's economy in a wreck! All the current hype about her "leading the charge' against the ruthless dictator Musharraf sells news and that's all. She cares as much for the common Pakistani as she cares for shred of trash on the streets of Karachi! It would be a fairly safe bet to say that Western powers have attempted to set her up, only to insure their own interests. Musharraf, while having now lost his senses and his "democratic" ways, is in a way still the only horse to bet on. If Musharraf goes, the Islamists have a clear shot at Pakistan, with no opposition and then Pakistan will look like a mirror image of a Taliban Afghanistan!

60 years of troubled existence has left Pakistan, truncated, fractious and totally bankrupt leadership-wise. The question should be: If not Bhutto and Musharraf, who then? The answer lies in many different aspects of Pakistan. However, the one factor that has regularly been left out of any national discourses, infact it has been completely avoided as a subject, is mass education. Compulsary, effective and relevant education for the Pakistani masses is the key to the future successful existence of Pakistan. In 60 years the percentage of educated Pakistanis remains abjectly low! Pakistan, even today is plagued by a form of slavery under the various landowners that are the power in the country. Majority of the Pakistanis are infact quite moderate in most ways, believe that there should be some rule of law (not democracy, necessarily) and live in peaceful conditions. Again the leadership, post Jinnah, has always failed because an overwhelming majortiy of them came from the landowner ranks. The rest have been military leaders. America shouldn't get excited about Bhutto. More than likely, if she were to somehow fanagle her way into office, she will emain there on as long as she needs to. Benazir Bhutto will not be able to withstand any political or military attack from the Islamists. Quite possibly she will once again empty out the country's finances and be off on her merry way to live in one of her many residences, from Dubai to Switzerland to London! We sure know which horse to back, don't we ?
Ask any everyday Pakistani not involved in politics and they will choose a military govt over a so called democratic one, especially the devil in disguise, Bhutto.  She is one corrupt lady who will sell out anything in Pakistani to any buyer especially the USA so that she can have her charges dropped, be in power, and have access to more corruption activities.
Part II>
Musarraf is not an angel by any means but at least being in the military he will balance Pakistan's needs with pressure from outside (USA), as all our Generals have had to do before.  Bhutto, will sell her mother if the USA tells her if she can have access back to her money and lands in Pakistan.  The western media is playing it so different, in Pakistan they hate Bhutto and feel that the USA made a move to move out Musharraf, by getting him to accept Bhutto as a partner, and slowly bring in Bhutto and move him out.  This gives the USA complete rule rather than partial rule.  Love them politicians in any country...willing to sell it to anyone.
Back before the days of neocon faith-based foreign policy, we had leaders who realized that places like Pakistan weren't Wisconsin and didn't feel the need to offer the public a cast of phony good guys and bad guys. The fact that someone who once rose to power in Pakistan ( or here for that matter) isn't June Cleaver should be no surprise to anyone who knows a thing or three about the reality based world.
Question: How can Benazir support a lavish lifestyle in UK when she has been expelled from her own country and with no known income?
Why and how do all these expelled people (along with the LTTE folks) land up in UK?

Musharraf has been forced to bring Bhutto  back into Pakistan under intense international pressure.Indian lobbyist & Bhutto have been working behind the scene to tarnish Musharraf's sincerity in the fight against terrorism.Bhutto has failed twice as a Prime Minister of Pakistan and has many cases pending against her.Unfortunately the Judiciary in Pakistan has become very politicised, and therefore Bhutto would have been cleared of all charges against her.Even the media is dominated by her party. If Bhutto becomes a PM she will be very ineffective without the backing of the military.
As much as I hate it I'm behind Musharraf on what he did. By what right does the US claim that democracy is best for all? Its either him or the Islamic terrorists with nuclear weapons. Maybe he should use some of them in them outlying outlaw areas where the terrorists are known to thrive.
You want democracy in Pakistan? OK, then islamists will gain or even grab power legally. In best case scenario, they will free to rule in part of Pakistan and support Taliban and Al-Qaeda. Nobody in Pakistan wold dare to fight them. Musharaff at least tries to do it. And don't forget that it was Bhutto who created Taliban.
Let's worry about Bhutto later. We need to worry more about President Bush seeing"positive signs" in Pakistan ?  Does anyone remmber Bush's  Osama slogan, " WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE" ?  Musharref  has re-written that slogan, " MAKE A DEAL AND WE WILL KEEP YOU ALIVE !"  Musharref also has the nerve to ask for more funds as our man in the WAR ON TERROR !
Terrorism used to keep the country in turmoil and to keep authoritarian rule. The Foreign policy of this nation has been it's worst since the Clinton Administration. Perhaps some of the politicians in Washington should take Foreign Policy 101
Well Richard, we are relying on you to really let us know what is going on there!
And from the pushing and shoving you took during your report on Friday - Be careful out there is an understatement....
Jayne Ferguson
Santa Monica, CA
Dear Richard, I know you now what you are doing but after viewing your report on Friday I was scared seeing you shoved around within the crowds. PLEASE BE CAREFUL RICHARD!! Bhutto seems determined to go up against Musharraf to restore democracy to Pakistan. She is not perfect and has problems with her own length of rule. As you state she faces corruption cases in Britain, Spain and Switzerland so she is " no angel". Then again Musharraf is not perfect in his rule either. His press conference was certainly contradictory and the local journalists were not pleased. Please be carful if there is a rally in Tuesday Richard!! These two leaders are really rivals struggling for power over the people. PLEASE BE CAREFUL and SAFE RICHARD!! You are a brave and excellent journalist! Peace to you always!!
You compared between Pakistan and Myanmar but very superficially and incompletely. You said Bhuto is not Aung San Suu Kyi. Maninly it is not about the difference between Bhuto and Suu Kyi. It is about the difference between Government of Pakistan and that of Myanmar. Pakistani Government is much more humane than Myanmar Government. Myanmar Dictators are incomparably oppressive to their own people. Comparing Bhuto and Suu Kyi, they both are Oxfore-educated. But you can't find corruption in Noble Peace Prize Winner Aung San Suu Kyi. Moreover Suu Kyi has been sacrificing her whole life(12 of last 18 years in house arrest). Nobody talks loud about Suu Kyi's decade long house arrest while Bhuto's one day house arrest is getting media attention. It is odd and funny.
Are we sending money to that country. Dont we have hundreds of people starving in our good USA? How many people in our good usa are going hungry? And where is our tax money going? we aLL need an answer to that. we have the greatest country in the world I have been to a few other countries and they stink thank God it was only while I was in the USNavy during the second world war
I can just see it now! Bhutto in charge of Pakistan, Carter embassetor to, Iran. Kerry the leading diplomat to, Vietnam. And the Taliban & Al Quida well on its way to securing a stronger foothole in the middleast and southeast asia.
Benazir is a very courageous and enlightened leader. She has been wrongly maligned by the intelligence agencies of Pakistan and not a single charge of corruption has been proved against her or her husband. This is just the media trial and it must be stopped. She is a great leader and if the people of Pakistan vote for her she must be allowed to rule the country. LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE WITH THEIR VOTES............
Wow now this is a surprise! Mainstream media actually reporting something even remotely relevant. I congratulate you on that. I do want to say though that its a little bit late, maybe if you had reported on it a while ago, or maybe if you had reported on the fact that bhutto is friendly to corporate interests, and would make a great leader to have supporting american corporations in one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Maybe if you reported about all the wheeling and dealing to get her back in pakistan, and get musharraf to feel the pressure to drop the charges. Maybe then you might have a little bit of respect, maybe then you might actually be reporting something to inform people about the world around them. Rather then keeping them ignorant, then maybe you might be doing the job that the media is supposed to be doing.
The Taliban hate Musharaf. For the positive actions the military have taken against them, led by the M man himself, has been notable in reducing their influence in the feudal areas as well as constitutional areas. Bhutto hates Musharaf because of the rightful and legal charges against her of economic and political corruption by way of economic throwbacks from state deals. And so, both enemies of Musharaf have a common target: Musharaf. Should Bhutto come into power her focus wil be on the Kashmir issue. WHile the nations eyes will be on them peace talks and the constant set backs she will be robbing the country blind to the verge of bankruptcy, while the taliban will spread a viscous religous word around the country recruiting more

she amasses support by paying money. she buys her support with the money she stole.I wish her the same fate as her father.

Ms Librety? more like Trojan Horse...
If pakistan was under islamic rule you would have none of the stupid and useless protests going on right now!  Musharraf has done more ofr the country than nawaz sharif and bhutto had in their years altogether.  Hey if you want the country to lose its stance and get messed up then vote for bhutto!
Democracy has suffered a blow in Pakistan.  The question is not whether the Bhutto government was corrupt but whether Musharraf has any constitutional right to usurp a democratically elected government and then suppress the opposition in the name of waging war on terror. This sounds like a Bush Unpatriotic tactic.
Anyone see any similarities between Musharaff's rationale for his crackdown and, well, our rationale for being in Iraq? He's a quick study. Looks like we're all "spreading democracy" (at the barrel of a gun). Why *should* we complain about what he's doing? (Please detect the note of irony.)
Bhutto and Musharaff both deserve to be behind bars. Pakistan is the epicenter of all the terrorist activities in the whole world. Instead of trying to attack Iraq or Iran, US should have attacked Pakistan and send it to stone ages. Most of the terrorist training camps have been in Pakistan for the longest time. The sad part is that Pakistanis claim to be very brave but the fact is they are the cowards in this whole world. They don't have the backbone to stand up to their own army. Where in the world would you find the army ruling a nation for the past 50 years of their 60 year independence? This goes to show that they have no backbone otherwise a strong million people on the streets on Pakistan would have send the army back to the barracks and they wouldn’t have dared to take over power. This message is for all the Pakistanis if they have any shame left then instead of hiding in their own houses and claiming to be brave come out in open, tear the ISI’s of this world, tear down the army and break down the army’s backs. Send a message to all the generals for the future that you won’t tolerate army rule ever in Pakistan. Take the example of Russia, when the people came to red square and took the communist out of power. Their politicians are the most corrupt. Bhutto's husband was called Mr.10% because during her regime in power her husband took 10% in bribes for all the contracts awarded. General Musharff is no better and has stolen money from the aid that has been given to Pakistan for the last seven years. All the generals in Pakistani army have become rich while the country has become poorer; the $10 billion aid given to fight the war on terror has gone into the pockets of corrupt politicians and generals. It is really a stupid policy to rely on army in Pakistan to further democracy in a nation. The US foreign policy has weakened the democratic process in Pakistan for the longest time. We can’t have foreign policies tailor made to suit a nation. If we say we stand for democracy then it should be same policy for Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. . In fact even the nuclear scientists in Pakistan have given the secrets to our enemies in the past. Its time the west realize the mistake and Bomb Pakistan once and for all, make sure all the nuclear sites are bombed so that in future we won’t have any more Mr. Khan’s  giving the nuclear secrets to other countries. For the Pakistanis I wish them well and hope that the sooner they got rid of the generals and the ISI it will be better for them. In fact they should get rid themselves of the nuclear weapons also which doesn’t serve them at all. What is the use of having nuclear weapons when you don’t have food to eat? Grow wheat, rice and educate your kids. Educate them in science and Math, not in some stupid religious books which doesn’t prepare them to face the world. Teaching them to hate the west is not a solution for Pakistan.
Benazir and Nawaz Sharif have been tested twice. They both stole and both are very corrupt. Atleast Musharraf is not corrupt and the economy has progressed during his tenure. Hope he stays on and if Benazir comes to power she will be on leash.
Benazir is very dangerous for Pakistan and the region. She is Shi'te by faith and will help Iran with Nukes. Shi'tes have the same Pope (Imam) and whatever the Imam says they oblige. Before the US puts all their eggs in her basket make sure she is on a leash on Iran. If you watch the footage from her last meetings with the Iranian Mullahs you will notice the how cozy they were. Liberalism and conservativism is ignored when it comes to Shi'tism.
This was a strategic move on the part of Musharef, but it will backfire.  By aligning himself with the US and anti-terrorism he attempted to justify his continued rule. The US, however, cannot support the subversion of democracy on the basis of such flimsy evidence of internal turmoil.  Musharef was banking on America's dependence on his troops in Waziristan to stop the influx of extremists into US controlled regions along the border in Afghanistan.  He truly believed America would turn a blind eye toward anything he did politically.  This is his failure.  Pakistan's only chance is for a realistic political process and a fair election.  It is however; very interesting that Musharef's decision to suspend the constitution and the Supreme Court has not led to a widespread uprising of the Pakistani people.  If the people are not ready to stand up against him for democracy...he will not go.
Richard Engel has it right. Benazir is as corrupt as any corrupt politicain in the world. She openly and brazenly looted the Pakistani treasury and her husband is known as "Mr. Ten Percenter" for taking his cut to let any deal be consumated. Bhutto wants to be PM again for only one reason - GREED. If any one is naive enough to believe that this lady believes in democracy then I have a bridge to sell to these people.
As far as George Bush,"DUBBYA" pushing to bring  democracy in Pakistan; he is bucking to be Jimmy Carter "The Second" for allowing Islamist fantics to take over in a,"One Man, One Vote, Once." Have we forgotten Iran, the Shah who was our friend and the Ayatollah who grabbed the power because we helped him by weakening the Shah.
George's stupidity is unfatomable and the horror of horrors is that he thinks he has the answer. While I am at it, let me confess I voted for him.
Musharraf is no angel and no democrat but he is the best bet for Pakistan in near future. He has got the economy going and that in the long run is THE SOLUTION for Pakistan's ills and not democracy for now. Writers Abdul Khan and Spacegold have it right. Demcracy will come in Pakistan when the people of Pakistan will it and fight for it and not a moment sooner just because some of the elites of Pakistan find it convenient to shout about it or the US wants it.
Let Pakistan resolve it's own problems. Concentrate on the Pakistani Nuclear Arsenel so in case of total anarchy, it does not fall in hands of terrorist or Pakistani Military faction who supports them.
Dear Richard, I was just viewing MSNBC and the news was that the government was not going to allow her to attend the protest march on Tuesday. I believe she will probably be under house arrest again and barricaded from leaving. Judging from your report from Friday and her van charging towards police I hope that does not happen again. I really don't think the march from Lahore to Islamabad is going to be a good idea. It seems too risky. Just be EXTRA CAREFUL RICHARD!! You have done a magnificent job reporting from this region. I truly support your great reporting. BE CAREFUL Tuesday! I hope there is a peaceful resolution to this conflict. I will be thinking about you Tuesday and awaiting your report. STAY SAFE RICHARD!! Peace to you!
The U.S. and European community are wasting there time and resources on Pakistan.
Pakistan is a culture that is corrupt throughout,
no matter who gains power their nothing will change.
The only solution is to let them fight it out amongst themselves and deal with the one that wins.
As for there nuclear arsenal, the world should unite and disable it ASAP, because sooner or later one of these nuts will use it against India and it will be too late then.
feel, musharaff is better among the worsts, since he is showing signs of fighting terror's ., but fate oof his is seen digs his own grave- not politically intelligent. let's see for a good hearty pakistan for the people, world good.
I think Musharraf or Bhutto should start lookin for a political consultant, Karl Rove should send them his political resume and go over to help.  While he's over there he should tell bin laden were coming for em !
Why is this news, all politicians are the same the world over. This is as true in Pakistan as it is in the US. Whenever we have to choose our leaders it is like choosing between Chucky and spawn of Chucky...they are all corrupt and only care about their own interests. Once they get elected all the promises to the electorate are forgotten, then it is how can I get myself and 3 generations of my family wealthy. It was, is and forever will be choosing the lesser of the 2 evils at that particular point in time. Sad but ture!
when will the idiots in Washington finally realize that the American brand of government will not work in the Middle east. Its not working that well here . the present leaders in pakistian are our only hope to keep its weapons out of terrorists hands.  But we go and find a crook and thief to come in to fix the problems. Sounds like the Iran under the shua and we got kohemmeni instead and iraq under its new thieves and partners. saddam was better than these fools. maybe we need to change ourf leaders instead
I think that Bhutto is a corrupt, self-interested, and irrational politican and can bring no good to Pakistan. Whether the corruption charges against her are false or not, she was still one of the worst things to happen to the Islamic Republic, and will be if she is once again allowed in the political arena.
Whatever Benazir's popularity in Pakistan is, her ideas about letting the US troops run rampant in Pakistan in chasing so-called 'terrorists' is surely a non-starter. That's one reason Musharraf is hated - because he's another 'Bushie' in the area, who'll get his just deserts one of these days.
If we as citizens of this world cannot learn from history then shame on us. The Bhuttos and the Sharifs and the Chaudharis ... they are all one in the same. They are the ruling elite class of Pakistan. Different name ... same game. They have all looted Pakistan to an extend where it was almost bankrupt. There was absolutely no media freedom at all and now they are crying because Musharaff has imposed emergency. Come on guys...wake up. I am not a fan of Musharraf either but in comparision he is lesser of the other evils. I sincerely hope that people of Pakistan can realize this and find sincere politicians who are responsible and true patriots and for them the country comes first. Miracles can still happen...and I am sure there will be a day when we will be fortunate enough to have true democracy in this country.
Thank god there are at least some journalists who realize that most Pakistani's oppose Bhutto even more than we dislike Musharraf. I will take 10 more years of Musharraf rather than even a year with Bhutto. Her two stints at rule DEVESTATED the country's economy and was in many ways the most repressive(correctly noted about the media repression during her rule).  Her family and many in her party(PPP) are among the most corrupt there are. Her husband is a well known murderer and kidnapper to those who live in Lahore. He is infamous throughout Pakistan. I have extended family members who are PPP 'organizers'. There job is to pass out sacks of flour, oil, etc. during elections to poor people so they will vote for PPP. That is not democracy. The government is broke, but Bhutto is not the one to fix it.  The only honest politician in Pakistan is Imran Khan, but nobody would vote for him or back him because of true anti-corruption stance. It is a shame to see the country in such a mess.
