When will Indonesia’s volcano blow?

SURABAYA, Indonesia – Will it? Won’t it? Has it already erupted? From my vantage point here in Surabaya, guessing what’s going on with Mount Kelud is the most popular game in town. It’s headline news; Indonesia’s television stations reporting regular live updates from somber-faced correspondents camped on the steep slopes of one of country’s deadliest volcanoes.

The brooding volcano sits around fifty miles southwest of us here in Indonesia’s second city. Its alert status has been at the highest level for more than two weeks, and experts say an eruption is imminent.

My driver wasn’t so sure, though.

"Maybe yes, maybe no," he told me, throwing his hands into the air – a sort of resigned, fatalistic gesture that I’ve noticed is very common when it comes to Kelud. My hotel receptionist stuck her neck out a little further: "They always say that," she said of the country’s excitable vulcanologists.

The experts think they have their facts right. Indonesia sits on a belt of intense seismic activity known as the Pacific "Ring of Fire." The country has 70 active volcanoes, more than any other country, so the experts have plenty of hands-on experience.

Evacuation orders
Kelud means "sweeper" in Javanese, because of its historic reputation for sweeping everything away when it erupts. And rather like dealing with a patient in intensive care, the scientists have been monitoring Kelud’s vital signs for weeks, sensors recording every huff, puff and tremor.

And right now, they say, they have the geological equivalent of a life-support machine gone berserk. It could erupt at any minute.

"There’s been a partial lifting of the lava dome at the top, as well as a strong drift of heated winds upwards," they reported Monday – which to you and I means the mountain is about to blow its top.

Orders have gone out to evacuate tens of thousands of people living on the slopes of the 5,700-foot volcano. Officials point out that Kelud killed 30 people when it last erupted in 1990 and more than 5,000 in 1919.

The problem for the experts – and the government – is that not everybody shares their urgency. Many of those in the danger area are refusing to leave their homes, in spite of a compulsory evacuation order, preferring to stay and look after their land and livestock.

And many Indonesians trust age-old mystic traditions, rather than scientists. Last year, when Mount Merapi, one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia, was rumbling, and experts warned it would erupt at any minute, residents preferred to listen to Maridjan, the 70-year-old "gatekeeper" of the mountain, who has been conversing with its spirits for decades.

To the irritation of the government, the soothsayer told the villagers to stay at home. He said Merapi was merely throwing a tantrum and that nothing would come of it.

He was right.

Banana leaves for protection
It’s not clear whether Kelud has a gatekeeper, but the Jakarta Post today reported that some residents were hiding in the forests, with others placing banana leaves in front of their homes, believing this will protect them from the blazing lava, should it come.

The standing of the experts hasn’t been helped by a false alarm over the weekend, when they announced Kelud had erupted, only to backtrack later. Monday they admitted they were a little baffled as to why it wasn’t behaving as predicted, when their readings were now so strong, they could no longer be measured.

One theory is that hardened lava from previous eruptions could be blocking the release of magma, which could make for an even bigger eruption once sufficient energy has built up. Or the hardened lava could perhaps prevent a major eruption.

Scientists also said today that measuring equipment in the volcano’s crater lake has been damaged. They said they are no longer able to monitor its temperature.

"We are now left with four seismic quake detectors and two deformation detectors," one scientist said. And if they break? I guess there are always the banana leaves and the soothsayer!

I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD GET OUT SINCE MOUNT KLEUD IS SO UNPREDICTABLE. THEY SHOULDN'T RELY ON BANANNA PEELS FOR PROTECTION.
Government should FORCE these people to leave.
Read the Bible!!!!!!!!! We are in the endtimes and it will blow along with many other disasters coming on this evil wicked world.May God have mercy on us.
Perhaps banana leaves would prevent global warming.
If they aren't smart enough to leave then don't push it.  It will keep them from multiplying and having a dozen kids that refuse to use common sense or listen to the experts.  It will save time and resources.
Surabaya's a good time at night but you have to remember these are for the most part, very poor uneducated people clinging to the what they know and refusing to leave what they have. You cant blame them for that. As far as predicting if and when it will blow up, it's like predicting the weather, you never really know until it happens.
They should all take heed now.  Look at the recent California wildfires - the mandatory evacuations are what saved literally thousands of lives.  Sometimes it's too late to say "I'll wait" - you die anyway.

Dave, clearly you lack a strong understanding of the underlying technology.  It's banana "leaves", not peels.  There's a HUGE difference, and everyone knows that banana peels are pretty much useless against raging lava flows.  Sheesh.  ;)
But they should have the right to decide what to do.  They've been warned.  They should be helped to leave if that's their choice, offered shelter and protection until its safe to return.  But as long as no one else is hurt by the decision, as long as you realize that if you stay you're on your own and you can't asked others to risk their lives to save you -- if you're putting yourself in possible jeopardy (and not your children or other dependants) then you should be allowed to live your own life, make your own decisions, take your own risks and, perhaps, follow your own destiny.
The Truman Spirits will settle everybody down on the slopes of the volcano.
I consider myself a scientist and relatively bright.  There are times though when I would trust the gatekeepers and soothsayers rather than myself or any information I have studied in class.  Remember the old man and the tsunami that caused such catatrophic measures. Well the old man had predicted the outcome and moved his relatives to higher ground.
Bless all our warm blooded relatives.  History will record your success against the magma and killing gasses, and smoke of a natural phenomenon, known as an eruption.  we live in favorable climes, and do not regard the consequences of our choice of habitat.  I was born and raised within the 38th parallel. experiencing rain, sleet, snow, drout, and horrific heat in summer. Those who are born in Volcanic circumstances, cannot be blamed for their decisions.  I only pray that the "Pele.s'of the world, will spare you all. I was an honored guest on Truk, during FEMA,S evaluation of a Typhoon there.  Tom.
Why in the world would anyone take the chance and stay where danger lurkes. Haven't they seen the movie "Dante's Peak"?
They aren't relying on banana peels Dave.  They are relying on banana leaves.  There is a big difference between peels and leaves.  Have you taken leaf of your senses?
Well Hello People !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Big Mountain about to Blow! Run!!!!!!!!!! I live in the shadow of Mt. Rainer in Washinton State and if that mountain makes one little sqeak I am GONE!
Volcanic eruptions can have significant effects on earth's climate. Apparently some volcanoes are capable of injecting vast amounts of sulfer dioxide into the stratosphere where it can linger for months or years, blocking a portion of the incoming solar radiation. This cools the earth's surface. We should all hope that Kelud gives plenty if warning before it blows -and then blows big, big big.
The logical side of me says they should evacuate, however, being an "Indo" (half Indonesian/half Dutch) I also am aware of the soothsayers, traditions, beliefs, etc. from my culture (To this day I will not sit on a pillow even though I was raised in US!  I do not believe they think a banana leaf will protect them from the lava itself...I do think they believe this will "ward off" the volcano's ability to "touch" their homes. At this point, if there is a guardian/soothsayer, and he has been correct where scientists have been wrong...I'm following what HE says!
For the people's safety the government should  have mandatory evacuations if the signs increase. Otherwise, the local residents need to be informed in a logical way of the imminent dangers, this way they are more likely to evacuate in case there are any further activities that indicate imminent danger.
I think that there is no harm in evacuating if in the end, lives are saved.
It sounds to me they have heard of Global Warming.
I also have been tracking it's impending eruption and writing on it as a topic.

No doubt it will, and I think one of the largest eruptions in years...get out.

Calif will show you how to evacuate successfully.
DWG
Presidential candadates should have a debate with the volcano and their hot air will surpass that of the crater which will go dormant once again.
Well, I hope that if if does erupt, that nobody who tries to run slips on a Banana Peel.

THAT would be a tragedy.
What will be will be.
I'd prefer to leave for a while.  Pyroclastic flows are non-forgiving.  Death do us part.
Uh ya? Ya think? Thanks for stating the obvious facts, Dave!
I can understand where the Indonesians come from by listening to someone who has been "conversing" with spirits for years. Sometimes, people and their surroundings can tell more about an act of nature than sophisticated equipment. Animals never run out of electricity. With that said, I would announce a MANDATORY evacuation of the mountainside. The volcano is active and unstable. who knows when it will blow, but when it does, let's hope it is not another Krakatoa or Mt. St. Helens.
and DAVE, it's bananna leaves. NOT bananna PEELS.
On Sep 30th, I predicted a massive volcanic eruption would occur in Indonesia within a year. That same day, I issued my warning in a post titled "Indonesia: paroxysmal-colossal volcanic eruption" on the following prediction websites:

At 2am on Oct 3rd, I named Mount Kelud as the specific volcano that will explode. This was a full 2 weeks before vulcanologists announced that an eruption of Mount Kelud was imminent.

For more than a month now, I've been telling anyone who will listen that Kelud will produce the largest explosion since Krakatoa blew itself to smithereens back in 1883.

Just check my post at the abovementioned websites to confirm that I actually predicted this event 2 weeks before the experts (or anybody else) did.

I just hope that the loss of life won't be as great as it was when Kelud erupted in 1919. -Syzygy
This intrinsic stupidity among third world nations is nature's way of regulating the over population in that part of the world. Ditto for India-Pakistan nukes....
Most of the natives are uneducated and still believe in the old ways of their ancestors. Unfortunately the odds are stacked against their survival and such is life in that part of the world. We can do little except pray for them and hope god will help them through this ordeal.
Government authorities in Indonesia are notoriously dodgy, and the people have been living with this all their lives. The local shaman divining the future from lizard bones is probably just as reliable as pronouncements from Jakarta. Recall, so you don't feel superior, that many here are creationists and that our president objects to stem cell research.
THANK YOU FOR THAT INFORMATIVE COMMENT DAVE
On  leaving  to  area,  every  body  within  35  to  50  miles  should  move  out,  it's  better  to  "MAYBE  COME  BACK,"  that  try  to  out-  run  the  blast,  that  is  VERY  likley  to,  GO  BOOM - BOOM !   Those  nana  peel'z  are  slii-ik,  when  wet  with  molt-in  lava !
Hopefully, the volcano is only throwing off a little steam.  In any case our thoughts are prayers are for the safety of the people of Indonesia.
IT IS GOVERNMENT COMPULSORY TO EVACUATE  EVERYONE AND FOCUS TO ALL ASPECT OF THE COUNTRY & ITS PEOPLE, THE ELITS SHOULD NOT JUST CONSIDER ABOUT GAINING POLITICAL BUSINESS OF NEXT ELECTION OR EACH PROVINCIAL GOVERNOR ELECTION...LETS OBSERVE WHY NATURE IS NOT FRIENDLY...DISASTER COMES ONE AFTER ANOTHER........
Only a fool would build on the slope of a volcano.
Only an idiot would go to photograph the fool's home.
Being an urban Asian dweller, I do not put my bets on such gatekeepers despite my cultural roots. However, vulcanologists are not that perfect either. I do share the same sentiments as the people who live near the volcano. Who would believe the boy who cried wolf-twice?
Dave, be careful, banana peels don't work -- you must use the leaves.

In all seriousness, yes, they should leave.  Remember the people that would not leave prior to Mt. St Helen erupting here in the US.
how hard is it to move for them? they've got a whole lot of islands to choose lol plus it's not like everybody has a six bedroom mansion. I've seen some pictures and documentary films on the villages and most of the buildings that I see on those islands are fairly easy and cheap to construct, seeing how most of the materials are from the jungle anyways.
For decades we have tried to develope scientific methodologies toward predicting earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Today, even with extensive hi-tech equipment, it is an elusive game that we can't yet win. Our earth has much more experience than we do
and will do what she wants, when she wants.
Never the less, warnings and evacuation orders should be heeded. Better to be able to come back when the volcano relaxes, than to be pulverized in it's fury.
Simply put, why take a chance when the percentages are not in your favor?
Jim

This reporter deserves an eruption of applause! Ian Williams revives the spirit of Mark Twain, helping us picture the horrors and the humor with equanimity.  In these days of shameless spinning in the name of journalism, he has two feet on solid ground. Thanks!
Dave: It's banana *leaves*, not *peels*. That might make all the difference!
I agree with dave.....like it's dangerous...so get the hell out....dont ask for help when the thing has blown and you need out....it's a volcano, like duh.

What are the chances that the activity at Mt. Semeru is connected to the activity on Mt Kelud?  Indonesia has a history of large scale eruption events (Krakaotoa VEI 7, Tambora VEI 8 and Toba VEI 8+). None of these historic eruptions were observed using the technology available to scientists today. Whilst much has been learnt by the data gathered from the Mt St Helens and subsequent eruptions, Volcanologists are yet to observe a truely massive volcanic event, aside from perhaps Pinotubo in 1991(VEI 5 I think?).  Given the number of earthquakes associated with the build up to the eruption and the number of large seimic events in the region in recent history, I wonder whether the Indonesian authorities are looking at this build up as the portent to a truely large eruption event?  I hope not for the sake of the Javanese given the massive population density on the island currently.
Scientists are not always right, but in this instance I believe these people should leave.  It this volcano erupts banana leaves will not help.  I read there are nearly 25,000 who will not leave.  This would be a terrible tragedy if the magma heads their way.  Also, this could set off another tsunami, and this should be made clear.  Foresight, not hindsight, is needed here.
The earth is a fascinating place, the eruption of a volcano is a wonderous thing to witness.  If I were to chose my death it would be at the hands of a powerful volcano.  However, at this point in time, I would much rather view one from at least one continent away and on T.V.  I must agree with Neil, Indonesia has the dubious distinction of owning three of the must powerful eruptions in Earths history.  There is always a chance that the fourth is going to be next.
To be so flip in the face of a potential horrendous disaster is distateful.  One wonders how many people and endangered/threatened species will be lost to yet another large eruption?  Indonesia has some of the most endangered cats on earth (e.g. clouded leopards and marbled cats); what are the officials doing to protect them?  They can't be warned like the residents have been.
This is a tough situation.  It is easy for us to say we would leave (as I know I would) because we are not leaving our home and livestock behind to be stolen or destroyed.  The Scientists don't have a compelling track record when it comes to complex environmental models.  They are really just educated guesses.  Hurricane models are good for half a day to a day at best, and global warming models consistently fail to track measured data.  Nature is just way more complex than what can be modeled and predicted reliably
